Fortuna Racing’s rising star Lara Antipova (Russian Revolution) confirmed her place among New Zealand’s most exciting juveniles with a commanding win in the Wakefield Challenge Stakes (Gr 2, 1100m) at Trentham on Saturday, delivering a performance that justified – and arguably exceeded – her $1.20 quote.

Having obliterated her rivals by eight lengths on debut at Te Aroha earlier in the month, the Mark Walker and Sam Bergerson-trained filly took the step to stakes company in her stride, travelling sweetly outside the speed under Craig Grylls before asserting her superiority at the 200 metres to score by 4.5 lengths in 1:03.3s on a Soft 5 track.

What's On

Ardrossan (Redoute’s Choice) gelding Butler Cabin filled the runner-up spot, while Tagaloa (Lord Kanaloa) filly Vahvay finished another half-length behind in third.

“She was obviously very dominant in her first start and stepping up to the next level, you wonder if it was too easy the first time, but she’s proven it again,” Grylls said.

“She’s so professional and credit to Mark and Sam, she did everything perfectly.”

Bergerson was equally impressed, highlighting the filly’s professionalism despite the quick 13-day turnaround and the overnight trip south.

“She is a very exciting filly. She has just kept on giving the more we have asked of her,” he said.

She’s so professional and credit to Mark and Sam, she did everything perfectly.

“It’s not an easy feat to turn around in 13 days and travel down here, but she seems to really enjoy the racing. Once she got outside the leader she settled really nicely and it was great to see her show that turn of foot again.”

For Te Akau’s Mark Walker, the victory carried added resonance, echoing a Wakefield success two decades earlier.

“It was a terrific performance to win and great to get the result for John and Jessica Galvin and their owners,” Walker said.

“I remember, going back a few years now to 2004, when we won the Wakefield Challenge Stakes for John with a filly named Kapsdan.”

Walker also revealed the filly’s $100,000 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale purchase by Te Akau Racing principal David Ellis in conjunction with Fortuna Racing was something of a value play, after buyers cooled on the progeny of Russian Revolution (Snitzel) earlier in the year.

“Lara Antipova has always shown a lot of natural ability, and it was great that our buying team was able to pick her out at the yearling sales, within John’s budget,” he said.

“It’s been a real success story so far and it looks like she’s got a really bright future.”

Fortuna principal John Galvin admitted the winning margin exceeded expectations, despite her short price.

“We were always going to be delighted if she won, but to win by that sort of margin…she drew a bit of a line in the sand today, I think, in terms of her overall quality,” he said.

The 14th individual stakes winner for her Newgate Farm sire, Lara Antipova is out of five-time winner Artistic Lass (Myboycharlie), who has produced three other winners including multiple scorers Caring Lass (Sebring) and Bubbly Lass (More Than Ready).

The dam is herself a half-sister to Group winners Sistine Demon (Excites) and Sistine Angel (Testa Rossa), and the stakes-placed pair Themoonlitegambler (Good Journey) and Scully (Shooting To Win).

The filly will now enjoy a brief freshen before aiming at the Matamata Breeders’ Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) and a likely tilt at the Sistema Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m), races Te Akau has dominated in recent seasons.

With Saturday’s win marking Te Akau’s sixth Wakefield title, the stable may once again have unearthed a flagship juvenile capable of following in the footsteps of Melody Belle (Commands), Maroofity (Maroof), and Bellatrix Star (Star Witness).

War Princess stamps Karaka Millions credentials with Eulogy Stakes triumph

War Princess (U S Navy Flag) confirmed her place among New Zealand’s leading three-year-old fillies with a commanding all-the-way victory in the Eulogy Stakes (Gr 3, 1600m) at Trentham on Saturday, delivering her first black-type success and strengthening her bid for next month’s $1.5 million Karaka Millions 3YO (RL, 1600m).

The Peter and Trent Didham-trained daughter of U S Navy Flag (War Front) arrived at the mile feature off a luckless second in last month’s O’Learys Fillies Stakes (Listed, 1340m) at Whanganui, where she flew home after being forced to wait for clear air. This time there were no tactical missteps.

Jockey Sam Collett bounced the filly straight to the front and controlled proceedings throughout, with well-supported rival Origin Of Love (Snitzel) stalking her every step. Turning for home, the pair broke away to stage the expected showdown, and Origin Of Love briefly poked her head in front at the 300 metres.

War Princess immediately rallied, showing grit and class to draw clear and score by 1.3 lengths, with Capaci (Tivaci) another 3.5 lengths adrift in third.

Trent Didham was thrilled with the filly’s professionalism and the clarity the performance now provides for her summer campaign.

“We thought she was a little bit unlucky last start when we tried to sit her in behind a couple and get her to relax a little,” Didham said.

“Sam [Collett] knew what she was doing today, took her to the front and she ran away from them.

I thought she was going along at a good clip and she was going to get the mile, so it was a good ride. This will open a lot of doors, whether it is the slot race [the NZ$4 million NZB Kiwi] or the Karaka Mile, so it is exciting

“I thought she was going along at a good clip and she was going to get the mile, so it was a good ride. This will open a lot of doors, whether it is the slot race [the NZ$4 million NZB Kiwi] or the Karaka Mile, so it is exciting.”

Collett was pleased to make amends for the previous outing, crediting the filly’s attitude and adaptability.

“In my own words it wasn’t probably the greatest ride in the world last time as we may have overthought it a little bit,” she said.

“When she hopped away so well, horses like that make our job so easy. She puts herself there, puts herself to sleep and is an all-round competitor. When she got challenged…true to her form, once I asked her the tough question she just put them away again.”

Bred and offered by Haunui Farm in Book 2 at Karaka 2024, War Princess is one of three winners out of the unraced Keeper (Danehill) mare Royal Appellant, and was purchased for $77,500 by Exempt Bloodstock and Didham Racing. She has now won five of her eight starts, earning $152,860.

She becomes the seventh individual stakes winner for her The Oaks Stud sire U S Navy Flag, who stood the 2025 season for a fee of NZ$12,500 (plus GST).

TAB bookmakers have moved her into $16 for the Karaka Millions 3YO, behind dominant favourite Well Written (Written Tycoon) at $1.90.

Grafterburners tightens for Sunlight stakes after dominant Listed win

Grafterburners (Graff) strengthened his credentials for next month’s $3 million Magic Millions Sunlight (1100m) slot race with a commanding performance in Saturday’s Gold Edition Plate (Listed, 1200m) at Eagle Farm, with the progressive colt stretching his winning sequence to three and prompting another firm in early markets for the January feature.

Sent out a well-supported favourite, the Kelly Schweida-trained rising star again demonstrated his versatility, overcoming the potential disadvantage of barrier one on a day when the inside wasn’t proving a place to be.

Under a tactically assured ride from Cejay Graham, Grafterburners mustered early speed to avoid being buried on the fence before easing into clear air at the right moment, the $1.90 elect doing the rest to score with authority by a length over Sylph (I Am Invincible).

Group 3 winner Icarian Dream (Blue Point) was third, another length further adrift.

“The way the race was going to be run today, we didn't want to be too far back and we certainly wanted to get to the outside and Cejay achieved that,” Schweida said.

“She rode him a treat. The colt was asleep before the race, he is a pretty boy.

“We will go to the slot race now and we will freshen him up to race over 1100 metres. There is so much money involved in that race and I can't wait.”

Grafterburners firmed from $4.50 into $4 for the Sunlight following Saturday’s performance. His biggest challenge now looms in the form of a distance drop to 1100 metres around the tighter Gold Coast circuit, though Schweida is confident the colt’s professionalism will hold him in good stead.

Graham, who has now partnered the colt to four of his five career victories, said he continues to elevate each time he steps out.

“This horse continues to raise the bar,” she said. “It's just so nice to see him racing so sharply.

“I could have dropped my hands on him and let him go back further in the race, but I thought that would have been a risky move today. I kept him honest to hold a spot in the race and he travelled like the winner from a long way out.

“The way the track is playing today, I thought I would just try to ride him like the best horse and aim for the fast lane.”

A $70,000 purchase for his trainer from the draft of his breeders Canning Downs Stud at the 2024 Inglis Classic Yearling Sale, Grafterburners is one of five winners out of the unraced Dylan Thomas (Danehill) mare Coralina, herself a half-sister to Golden Slipper (Gr 1, 1200m) winner Overreach (Exceed And Excel) and Group 2 winner Standout (Exceed And Excel).

He is the first stakes winner for Graff, who stood for a fee of $9,900 (inc GST) this year at Kitchwin Hills.

Unit Five puts Magic Millions target firmly in sight with dominant debut

Unit Five (Supido) announced himself as a genuine Magic Millions contender with a polished debut victory in the Magic Millions Vic 2YO Classic (1100m) at Caulfield Heath on Saturday.

Prepared by Ciaron Maher, the son of Supido (Sebring) justified his $2.70 favouritism under Thomas Stockdale, sweeping to a 2.5-length win over Ko Phangan (Ole Kirk), with Invincible Son (Farnan) another 1.3 lengths away in third.

The performance confirmed his eligibility for the Magic Millions 2YO Classic (RL, 1200m) at the Gold Coast on January 17.

Maher said the win capped a sharp week for the youngster, who had taken a Cranbourne 800-metre jump-out on Monday.

“I'm just rapt in the horse's progression,” Maher said. “We normally wouldn't trial them that close [to race day], but he seems to find things easy.

“I can't thank my team enough. I think that's our fourth pre-Christmas two-year-old winner for the year, so the system is working very well and I'm very thankful for them as at this time of year, the two-year-olds is what it's all about.”

While Tornado Valley (Too Darn Hot) remains the stable’s leading seed for the Gold Coast, Maher said Unit Five had done everything right to earn his place.

“Timing wise, we thought we could then send him to Sydney and then he would be on the right leg for the Millions, but we'll see how he comes through,” he said.

“He's just so professional and I loved the way he presented and behaved himself in the yard. He was very calm behind the gates. He bounced and made Tom's [Stockdale] job pretty easy.

“Tom had a good winner for us the other day and he's starting to make a habit of it, so it's good to be associated with him.”

Unit Five is named in honour of the late Widden Stud stalwart David Merricks, who spent more than three decades at Widden Stud and passed away last year.

An $80,000 purchase for his trainer at this year’s Gold Coast Yearling Sale, he has a half-brother by Anders (Not A Single Doubt) set to be offered at the 2026 Inglis Premier Yearling Sale as Lot 34.

Morning Briefing

Australia

Two for Sword Of State

Sword Of State (Credit: Cambridge Stud)

Cambridge Stud stallion Sword Of State (Snitzel) sired his second individual winner when Warwoven scored on debut in a 1000-metre contest at Randwick. Ridden by Rachel King for trainer Bjorn Baker, the juvenile colt defeated Norman’s Cay (Too Darn Hot) by 2.2 lengths with a further 0.2 lengths back to Hardanger (Pinatubo) in third. “He was very good, it’s exciting and great to see those colours of the Cunningham family and a great bunch of owners in this horse,” Baker said. “It’s what it’s about, he’s got a ticket to the Magic Millions now, he’s made his way in and he’s a lovely looking horse. I thought it was a big ask coming into today. He only had the one trial so I was questioning that and whether he was fit enough and if the 1000m would be too sharp for him. I’m absolutely thrilled and it’s another great purchase by Jim Clarke. He’s just making my job and my team’s job so easy. After that win, I do know that going to 1100 metres and even the 1200 metres will be even better for him.” Warwoven was purchased by Ridgmont, Bjorn Baker Racing, S & J Gosling and Jim Clarke for $380,000 at the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale. He is the first foal out of the Makfi (Dubawi) mare Needle And Thread, who landed the Royal Stakes (Gr 2, 2000m). A half-brother to Warwoven, by Farnan (Not A Single Doubt), will be sold at Inglis Premier as Lot 671. Sword Of State stood the 2025 breeding season at a fee of NZ$20,000 (plus GST).

First for Graff

Kitchwin Hills stallion Graff (Star Witness) registered his first stakes winner on Saturday when Grafterburners (3 c ex Coralina by Dylan Thomas) scored by a length in the Gold Edition Plate (Listed, 1200m) at Eagle Farm. Taking his overall record to five wins and a three placings from 11 starts, Grafterburners was a $70,000 Inglis Classic Yearling Sale purchase from the draft of his breeders Canning Downs Stud by his trainer. He is one of five winners from six runners out of the unraced Dylan Thomas (Danehill) mare Coralina, a half-sister to Golden Slipper (Gr 1, 1200m) winner Overreach (Exceed And Excel) and Group 2 winner Standout (Exceed And Excel). Graff stood the 2025 breeding season at a fee of $9,900 (inc GST).

164 for Snitzel

Arrowfield Stud’s late stalwart Snitzel (Redoute’s Choice) sired his 164th individual stakes winner when Matias (3 g ex Never Listen by Trusting) landed the Grand Prix Stakes (Gr 3, 1800m) at Eagle Farm. Ridden by Michael Rodd, the Gerald Ryan and Sterling Alexiou-trained gelding defeated Agent Zero by 1.3 lengths in a one-two for the stallion. Tambeloa (Tagaloa) finished a further 1.1 lengths back in third place. “He didn't like the real heavy track at Rosehill. He was unlucky at Canterbury. He won well the other day, but he was ridden too close to the lead,” said Ryan. “I don't know about stretching him further at this stage of his career. I wouldn't mind taking him home and giving him a break, not a long break, and seeing if he can measure up in the autumn.” Purchased by Curran Bloodstock for $450,000 from the 2024 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale, Matias is the first stakes winner out of the Trusting (Tale Of The Cat) mare Never Listen, a half-sister to Listed scorer Rose Of Peace (Hussonet). A full-brother to Matias will be sold at next month’s Magic Millions yearling sale as Lot 603. Snitzel died in June.

Back-to-back stakes wins for Rockribbed

The Tony Gollan-trained Rockribbed (8 g Night Of Thunder - Seattle Lass by Fraar) registered consecutive Listed wins when proving too strong in Saturday’s Lough Neagh Stakes (Listed, 1300m) at Eagle Farm. Ridden by Ryan Maloney, as he had been when landing the Recognition Stakes (Listed, 1350m) on his previous start, the eight-year-old gelding defeated Rothfire (Rothesay) by 0.7 lengths. There was a further 0.3 lengths back to the third-placed Anemacore (Unusual Suspect). "He’s been a marvel this horse, we got him up here a couple of seasons ago now,” Gollan said. “Did I think I would be winning races like this? Probably not. It was just about trying to get this horse back in form and going through his grades. But he’s been a real revelation, this summer he has really improved and he’s been going better and better. My farrier has also done a great job with him, he’s got really tricky feet. A lot of work has gone into a horse like this and I am really proud of the effort today to be honest. We have run into one of Queensland’s better open company horses in Rothfire, and we met him a lot worse at the weights.”

Apulia lands Ted Van Heemst Stakes

Lindsay Park’s Apulia (5 h Fiorente - Giannarelli by High Chaparral) chalked up his second Group 2 when landing Saturday’s Ted Van Heemst Stakes (Gr 2, 2100m) at Ascot. Having won the Moonee Valley Vase back in 2023, the five-year-old entire defeated Hoba West (Epaulette) by 0.8 lengths with a further 2.5 lengths back to Sentimental Hero (Al Maher) in third.

Plaintiff makes it three-from-three

Plaintiff (Credit: Sportpix)

Stakes races beckon for Plaintiff (Zoustar) after the Peter Snowden-trained filly took her record to three wins from as many starts in Saturday's Macquarie St Social Handicap (1300m) at Randwick. The three-year-old daughter of Zoustar (Northern Meteor) scored by 0.4 lengths over Shady Road (Written Tycoon) under Chad Schofield, with a further half-length back to Big Papa (Astern) in third. "The Surround [Stakes] was on the radar but it's going to come a bit too early," Snowden said. "It's more important to me to teach her how to be a racehorse than going in there half-hearted. The groundwork is done now. She is educated. We know her ability, we know she can race from the front or the back, so she’s very adaptable, and she's got a great turn of foot. I'm sure there are good things ahead for her. I'm sure she will make her mark here and probably go to Brisbane later on for the winter carnival and find a decent race up there. She's had three starts and she's just kept getting better with each one. She's won a midweek maiden, a Saturday race her next start and another Saturday race here. You don't often see that unless they're way above average and she has earned a good rest now. It won't be long, three or four weeks, but I can't wait for her to come back in.”

Step Aside strikes again at Randwick

New Zealand-bred gelding Step Aside (Redwood) took his earnings to the brink of half-a-million dollars with a well-timed finish in Saturday’s $160,000 Petaluma Handicap (1300m) at Randwick. Originally purchased for just $2,300 on Gavelhouse.com, the Chris Waller-trained son of Redwood (High Chaparral) has now won six races in his 26-start career, backed up by five seconds and four thirds. The six-year-old has earned $480,400 for his OTI Racing ownership syndicate. Step Aside is proving to be particularly effective at the 1300-metre distance. Saturday’s race was his 11th attempt at the trip, over which he has now recorded four wins and three placings. Off the scene since an unplaced finish at Rosehill in July, Step Aside resumed with a fourth over 1300 metres at Rosehill on December 7. He headed to Randwick on Saturday for his second-up assignment at the same distance, where apprentice jockey Siena Grima’s three-kilogram claim reduced his weight to 58 kilograms. Step Aside drew the second from outside gate in the nine-runner field, and Grima took him back and settled fourth from last in the early stages of the race. Grima angled him to the outside in the straight and began to move Step Aside through his gears. He finished over the top of his rivals to win by 0.9 lengths over Plundering (Shooting To Win). “Step Aside is a tough, reliable performer who keeps delivering when it counts. Congratulations to all connections on another terrific result,” OTI said on Facebook.

Gin A Tonic tees up Magic Millions tilt

Apprentice Logan Bates hopes he can be aboard Gin A Tonic (Better Than Ready) if the four-year-old gelding heads to the Gold Coast next month for the Magic Millions meeting. The Stuart Laming-trained son of Better Than Ready (More Than Ready) took out Saturday's Magic Millions VIC 3YO & 4YO Classic (1200m) to complete a winning hat-trick with Bates in the saddle, defeating Steel Move (Blue Point) by an easy three lengths on a step back up to 1200 metres. "The query was going up to the 1200 [metres] but when he didn't get that much pressure early, I was able to rate him," Bates said. "He's a very bold mover and off the corner, I had to wake him up a little bit as he wobbled off, but I balanced him up, he switched legs and once I gave him a reminder, he was good. I was able to have a look at the big screen and what he was able to do that to that sort of field, it was a good feeling. It's great for the Laming crew. They've got a quality sprinter on their hands." Bates said he had not spoken to trainer Bevan Laming, or son Richard, about plans for Gin A Tonic. "I'm sure it's in their thoughts but I haven't spoken to Richie yet," Bates said of a potential Gold Coast trip. "He's big, he's strong, he can make his own luck and when he puts them to bed like that, he's a smart horse. He burns around the rail and I'm only a passenger. He does the rest and I'm happy to be associated with him."

Touchdown makes it three on the bounce

Caulfield Heath has been a happy hunting ground for promising four-year-old Touchdown (Almanzor) in recent weeks, and the New Zealand-bred son of Almanzor (Wootton Bassett) recorded his third consecutive win at the venue in Saturday’s A$80,000 MRC Membership Feel The Thrill Handicap (1800m). Trained by Ben, Will and JD Hayes at Flemington, Touchdown was a maiden winner over 1400 metres at Sale in September, then picked up a 1600-metre Benchmark 66 handicap at Caulfield Heath on November 12 and returned there to add an 1800-metre Benchmark 66 handicap on December 3. Touchdown was a $1.60 favourite to complete a treble in Saturday’s Benchmark 70 handicap, and he delivered in impressive style. Ridden by apprentice jockey Jackson Radley, Touchdown defeated Trapalanda (Decorated Knight) by 2.3 lengths. “The original plan was to lead, but we went 100 metres and he’s a bit of a laid-back character and just couldn’t hold a spot,” Radley said. “I was a bit worried about having to settle back on the fence, and especially when we were in a pocket around the 800 metres, but he was just too good for them. Once we got to the outside, he let down very well and he’s a nice horse going forward. When you’re in a bit of an awkward spot, it always helps when a horse is travelling as well as he was. Once we got out, he was never going to get beaten. I think he’s going to get a lot further than this, and he was very strong to the line today.” The Lindsay Park team believes Touchdown’s best is yet to come. “He’s one of our more progressive horses in the stable,” Ben Hayes said. “He’s going through the grades nicely.”

Angland breaks winning drought

Angland (Credit: Racing Photos)

Angland (Ace High) was back in the winner’s circle with a narrow victory at the Caulfield Heath track on Saturday when getting the better of Enchanted Jenni (Per Incanto) and Crown Crusher (Gold Standard) in the MRC Mornington Summer of Racing Handicap (1600m). The Grahame Begg-trained son of Ace High (High Chaparral) was back in the winner’s circle for the first time in 12 months after a strong ride from Logan Bates. Angland is in his first preparation for the Begg stable, having transferred from the Price-Kent team for whom he won four races. The five-year-old gelding sports the colours of syndicator Ace Bloodstock and bounced back from a fall at Ballarat a fortnight ago in the best possible way as he beat Enchanted Jenni by 0.4 lengths. “The horse probably thinks he’s won two in a row based on how he went the other day,” Bates said, referring to Angland continuing to race on riderless and be first past the post at Ballarat. “He got out cleanly today and got there comfortably. There wasn’t a lot of speed in the race and he got pulling there for a bit but once I got him back, he was good. I gave him a squeeze and gee he tanked up. He’s still quite dumb, even though he’s had plenty of racing. He hit the front and was looking for his mates. He’s a bit of a worrier. I was just lucky that the one that levelled up to me was going in the finish and it kept him going. He is a horse that has got a lot of ability but he just needs to put it all together in the right areas.”

Wymark another to land overdue success

Last year’s Tulloch Stakes (Gr 2, 2000m) winner Wymark (Savabeel) returned to winning ways in style in the $130,000 Sportsbet Fixed Odds Exotics Handicap (1800m) at Caulfield Heath on Saturday. It was the fifth win of a 19-start career for the New Zealand-bred Savabeel (Zabeel) gelding, who burst on the scene as a three-year-old two seasons ago with four consecutive wins culminating in the Tulloch Stakes. He then finished seventh in the Australian Derby (Gr 1, 2400m). Wymark was guided through his first 16 starts by Michael Freedman, but switched to the Cranbourne stable of Gavin Bedggood this season. His first two appearances from his new quarters produced an 11th at Flemington on November 8 and a fourth at Pakenham last Saturday. Those two outings helped to build up his fitness for his third-up assignment at Caulfield Heath, where he was right back at his very best. Rider Jamie Mott settled Wymark in fourth along the rail, then stuck to the fence in the straight and drove his mount through a narrow gap on the inside of the front-running Oraqua (Zarak). Wymark quickened well and dashed to the front, kicking away to beat the $1.95 favourite Sneaky Sunrise (The Autumn Sun) by 2.3 lengths. “That was a really dominant win today,” Mott said. “I had my first ride on him last time over the mile. That was quite a fast-run mile and he was just run off his legs a little bit, but I thought he held his ground nicely to the line. Today, going up to the 1800 metres on a week back-up, it looked like it would work well for him. He was able to travel much better today, and once the gap came in the straight, he really responded well. It was a good, strong win. I struggled to pull him up too, so the further, the better.”

Roadcone wins at Caulfield Heath

Roadcone (Almanzor) held on for an all-the-way victory in the $130,000 Magic Millions Digital Handicap (1500m) at Caulfield Heath on Saturday. Trainers Peter Moody and Katherine Coleman identified Saturday’s Benchmark 78 handicap as a key target this time in for Roadcone, who had previously shown his effectiveness third-up in a campaign with a dominant win by four and a half lengths at Pakenham in May. He had finished second over 1200 metres and fourth over 1400 metres in his two previous appearances of that preparation. Moody and Coleman hoped for something similar again this time around, having sent out Roadcone for a first-up fifth over 1200 metres at Geelong and then a fourth over 1400 metres at Caulfield. Roadcone was ridden on Saturday by Luke Cartwright, who pressed forward from his wide gate and managed to get to the lead and cross to the rail within the first 200 metres. Roadcone was able to dictate terms from there and then kick hard off the home turn to open up a big lead. Knobelas (Belardo) emerged from the pack and began to eat into Roadcone’s margin with big strides late in the piece, but Roadcone dug deep and held on in a tight finish by 0.1 lengths. “The heart rate definitely went up in that last little bit,” Coleman said. “The second horse was huge and probably would have got us in a few more strides. We were aided by a fantastic ride from Luke Cartwright there. I thought he rated him really well in front and we were able to sneak it late. He’s a funny horse – there’s not much of him, but he always takes a couple of runs to get fit, and I think we see the best of him third-up. Our racing manager Jeff O’Connor identified this race for him a few weeks back. He thought 1500 metres would be ideal for him, and it’s a plan that’s paid off today. Credit to everyone involved.”

New Zealand

14 for Russian Revolution

Newgate Farm’s Russian Revolution (Snitzel) sired his 14th individual stakes winner when Lara Antipova (2 f ex Artistic Lass by Myboycharlie) took out Saturday’s Wakefield Challenge Stakes (Gr 2, 1100m) at Trentham. Lara Antipova is out of five-time winner Artistic Lass (Myboycharlie), who has produced three other winners including multiple scorers Caring Lass (Sebring) and Bubbly Lass (More Than Ready). The dam is herself a half-sister to Group winners Sistine Demon (Excites) and Sistine Angel (Testa Rossa), and the stakes-placed pair Themoonlitegambler (Good Journey) and Scully (Shooting To Win). Russian Revolution stood the 2025 breeding season for a fee of $33,000 (inc GST).

29 for Almanzor

Lux Libertas (Credit: Race Images)

Cambridge Stud’s Almanzor (Wootton Bassett) was provided with his 29th individual stakes winner when Lux Libertas (5 m ex Miss Fi by Makfi) landed the Manawatu Challenge Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m) at Trentham on Saturday. Ridden by Bruno Queiroz for trainers Lance O’Sullivan and Andrew Scott, the five-year-old mare chased down $2.70 favourite Marotiri Molly (Per Incanto) to score by 0.4 lengths. There was a further 0.5 lengths back to Bellles Beau (Iffraaj) in third. “It was a really good ride by Bruno, who gave her a sweet trip, and she moved into it well,” Scott said. “She had been building to this for a good while. Through her last preparation she was close in a couple of big ones and it’s good that she’s a stakes-winning mare now.” Lux Libertas was bred by Blandford Lodge principals Graham and Helen-Gaye Bax, in partnership with Elsdon Park principal Lib Petagna, and is out of stakes performer Miss Fi (Makfi), herself a half-sister to stakes winner Peaceful (Savabeel). Almanzor stood the 2025 breeding season for a fee of NZ$30,000 (plus GST).

Seven for U S Navy Flag

War Princess (3 f ex Royal Appellant by Keeper) became the seventh individual stakes winner for The Oaks Stud stallion U S Navy Flag (War Front) when scoring in Saturday’s Eulogy Stakes (Gr 3, 1600m) at Trentham. Bred and offered by Haunui Farm in Book 2 at Karaka 2024, War Princess is one of three winners out of the unraced Keeper (Danehill) mare Royal Appellant, and was purchased for $77,500 by Exempt Bloodstock and Didham Racing. Matamata visitor Sagunto (10 g O’Reilly - Queen Sabeel by Savabeel) etched his name into the folklore of the Manawatu Cup (Gr 3, 2300m) when he claimed his third victory in the race with a brilliant front-running performance at Trentham. Successful in the contest in 2022 and again in 2023, the Peter and Shaun McKay-trained ten-year-old had been battling to recapture his best form in his current campaign, although he had given plenty of cheek from in front before fading to midfield in the Waikato Cup (Gr 3, 2400m) at Te Rapa last weekend. That run topped him off nicely for his favourite race and he made a liar of those who doubted his ability to return to the winners’ enclosure as a brilliant ride from Sam Collett and a never say die attitude from the son of O’Reilly (Last Tycoon) resulted in him holding out all challengers for a brilliant win by just 0.1 lengths from southerner Freddie Time (Time Test). Peter McKay was struggling to hold back the tears as he described what it had taken to get the stable favourite back to winning form after he injured a tendon in the 2024 edition of the race. “Last year things didn’t go quite right for him as he had a bit of an issue with a tendon,” McKay said. “He’s come back this year and it’s been hard work trying to find the right tracks and races for him, but we were really happy when he ran third at Wanganui [two starts ago]. We weren’t sure whether to come here last week or run him in the Waikato Cup and he went really well thereafter being ridden well. He just loves it here and three [cups] for him is really good. I said to Sam that she needed to take the reins away and hold on to his mane as that is the way you have to ride him. He will find his own gears as he knows what he’s doing and if you try to rate him he doesn’t finish off. Shaun found that out and the other day after trackwork he came in and said, ‘wow he’s ready’. We’re proud of him and for a horse to take it [the race] three times, we are really proud.”

JPN: Drop Of Light chalks up second Graded success

Drop Of Light (6 m Tosen Ra - Precious Drop by French Deputy) registered her second Grade 3 victory when taking out Saturday’s Turquoise Stakes (Gr 3, 1600m) at Nakayama. Ridden by Fuma Matsuwaka for trainer Yuichi Fukunaga, the six-year-old mare defeated Lila Bonito (Screen Hero) by a head with the same distance further back to Salt Queen (Silver State) in third. The win added to Drop Of Light’s success in the 2024 CBC Sho (Gr 3, 1200m).

Seven for Honor A.P.

Heart Of Honor (3 g ex Ruby Love by Scat Daddy) became the seventh individual stakes winner for Lane’s End resident Honor A.P. (Honor Code) when taking out The Entisar (Listed, 1900m) at Meydan on Friday. Trained in the UK by Jamie Osborne, the gelding was winning for the fourth time in ten starts as he beat Artorius (Arrogate) by a length and a half with Walk Of Stars (Dubawi) a further two lengths away in third. Bought by current connections for Є160,000 at last year’s Arqana May Breeze-Up Sale, Heart Of Honor is the third foal out of Ruby Love (Scat Daddy), whose three wins include a Grade 1 success in her native Chile. Honor A.P. will stand the upcoming northern hemisphere breeding season for a fee of US$7,500 (approx. AU$11,340).

UAE: Grade 1 winner Mysterious Flight adds to his tally

Mysterious Flight (5 g Dark Angel - Mistrusting by Shamardal) returned to winning ways when successful in Friday’s Business Bay Challenge (Listed, 1400m) at Meydan. The Charlie Appleby-trained gelding beat Khanjar (Kodiac) by a neck with Marbaan (Oasis Dream) a further length away in third. Friday’s win was the sixth in 17 starts for Mysterious Flight, with his four stakes successes including a victory in the 2022 running of the Summer Stakes (Gr 1, 8f) at Woodbine.

UAE: Opera Ballo defeats stablemates in Al Rashidiya Stakes

The Charlie Appleby-trained Opera Ballo (3 c Ghaiyyath - Dubai Opera by Invincible Spirit) proved too strong for six rivals in Friday’s Al Rashidiya Stakes (Gr 2, 1800m) at Meydan, defeating stablemates Nations Pride (Teofilo) and First Conquest (Teofilo) in the finish. Ridden by William Buick, the three-year-old colt ran out a comfortable three lengths victor, with two and a quarter lengths back to First Conquest in third.

UAE: Imperial Emperor lands Al Maktoum Mile

Imperial Emperor (5 g Dubawi - Zhukova by Fastnet Rock) added a second Grade 2 to his CV when winning Friday’s Al Maktoum Mile (Gr 2, 1600m) at Meydan. Ridden by Tadhg O’Shea for trainer Bhupat Seemar, the five-year-old gelding led inside the final two furlongs and stayed on well to beat Commissioner King (Commissioner) by a length and half. There was a further three lengths back to Mendelssohn Bay (Mendelssohn) in third.

Milestone for Mark Newnham as Invincible Ibis dazzles ahead of Four-Year-Old Classic Series

By Declan Schuster

Mark Newnham reached a significant milestone on Saturday at Sha Tin as leading Four-Year-Old Classic Series prospect, Invincible Ibis (Hellbent), passed yet another crucial test on his march towards the HK$13 million (approx. AU$2.52 million) Hong Kong Classic Mile (1600m) – the opening leg of the three-race age-restricted challenge – on February 1.

Celebrating his 100th Hong Kong training win with the young gun’s victory in the Class 3 Poinsettia Handicap (1600m), Newnham joined Caspar Fownes at the top of the trainers’ championship on 25 victories this term over Danny Shum (23 wins) and David Hayes (21).

“It’s good to get the 100 out of the way. We’ve been stuck on 99 – I felt like a bad cricketer. It was going to come; I’m just pleased it came with this horse in this race. He’s a nice, progressive horse,” Newnham said.

“That should see his rating lift to get him into the Four-Year-Old Classic Series. He’ll need another race before then, but he’s on his way and he’s improving every start.”

Sky Trust (Credit: HKJC)

Stepping from barrier three, Invincible Ibis hugged the rail while midfield. The field fanned across the straight turning for home as the Hellbent (I Am Invincible) gelding stole ground under a cool Zac Purton ride, before saluting by one and three quarter lengths in 1m 34.97s.

“He’s always given that indication that he’s going to run 1600 [metres] out strongly, but first run you need to see them do it. Zac gave him a perfect ride, the gaps opened up for him, so he had the advantages with an inside gate [three], but he still had to put them away and he did it well,” Newnham said.

After success earlier with Hong Kong International Sale graduate Circuit Fiery (Tavistock) in the first section of the Class 5 Amaryllis Handicap (1400m) for trainer Chris So, Purton became the first to reach 50 wins for the campaign with his bookending double.

Purton said: “He [Invincible Ibis] keeps improving which is a nice thing. He did it a different way today, coming inside and through them. He keeps doing what we ask him to do.”

The Four-Year-Old Classic Series also features the HK$13 million (approx. AU$2.52 million) Hong Kong Classic Cup (1800m) on March 1 and ends with the HK$26 million (approx. AU$5.04 million) Hong Kong Derby (2000m) on 22 March.

So banked an early double as Manythanks Forever (Star Witness) landed the second section of the Class 5 Amaryllis Handicap (1400m) with Andrea Atzeni.

Sky Trust (So You Think) earlier propelled Caspar Fownes to the top of the trainers’ standings – before Newnham levelled up – with a smart victory in the Class 2 Ivy Handicap (1200m) under jockey Maxime Guyon.

Having trained seven winners this month, Fownes is aiming to carry today’s momentum into Tuesday’s fixture at Happy Valley, where he has nine entries.

“It’s nice to see a horse like this perform at this Class 2 level,” Fownes said. “He’s a horse that can go further – he’ll be better at 1400 [metres] – so there’s some races coming up and, hopefully, we can get another win for the owners.”

Guyon, who grabbed a double, said: “We had a perfect run behind the leaders. I travelled very well, he showed a good turn of foot, and we had a light weight today.”

Guyon rode Glaciated (Frosted) to success for trainer Pierre Ng in the first section of the Class 4 Tulip Handicap (1200m) earlier. Preparing to conclude her riding stint on Tuesday, Hollie Doyle partnered The Red Hare (Sebring Sun) to capture the Class 3 Spruce Handicap (1400m) for trainer Frankie Lor.

“It was good. I’ve ridden him three times now, so third time lucky. Obviously, he’s quite highly strung and quirky, but I’ve gotten to know him in the mornings and it paid off in the end. Hopefully he continues to progress,” Doyle said.

“I’ve absolutely loved it here. I’ve had so much support and I’m very grateful. Hopefully, I’ve made some good connections, if they’ll have me back next time. One more fixture to go on the Tuesday at Happy Valley and, hopefully, I’ll have a bit of luck.”

Emblazon (Zoustar) dominated the Class 4 Pok Oi Cup Handicap (130lb) for trainer Cody Mo and jockey Jerry Chau. The four-year-old began a double for Mo, who also won the Class 4 Erica Handicap (1400m) with Nyx Gluck (Redwood) and jockey James McDonald.

“This race worked out well for him [Nyx Gluck], he got a good draw [one] and James McDonald did very well. In the future, he will go a bit further, but for now this trip seems to be good for him,” Mo said.

McDonald, who concludes his short-term riding stint today, steered Fit For Beauty (Vanbrugh) to success in the Class 4 Hibiscus Handicap (1600m) for trainer John Size.

Francis Lui’s four-year-old debutant Turquoise Velocity (Zoustar) impressed in the Class 4 Cedar Handicap (1000m) under jockey Keith Yeung.

Yeung said: “He was a bit green when I was first trialling him at Conghua a few months ago, but he’s built up really well. Francis and his team has done an amazing job with him.

“When he first came to Hong Kong, he was really green, and we thought he would be an end-of-season horse, but he has improved after every trial. I knew he had the turn of foot, it’s just that he is still a big baby. He has a long way to go. I am really happy with him.”

Aurora Patch (Showtime) cruised to a comfortable second win in the Class 3 Holly Handicap (1200m) for trainer Manfred Man and jockey Matthew Chadwick.

Hong Kong racing continues at Happy Valley on Tuesday.
