Trainer Bjorn Baker will split up his early prominent two-year-olds Paradoxium (Extreme Choice) and Masvingo (Zoustar) this Saturday as he looks to build another stellar juvenile campaign amid his booming partnership with Ridgmont.

Progressive colt Paradoxium, who earned favouritism for the Magic Millions Gold Coast 2YO Classic (RL, 1200m) with an explosive win in MM’s Wyong 2YO Classic (RL, 1100m) earlier this month, will head north as he seeks to add Group success to his CV in Eagle Farm’s BJ McLachlan Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m).

Filly Masvingo, who ran third in that Wyong race after filling the same hole on debut in Randwick’s Gimcrack Stakes (Gr 3, 1000m), was nominated for the McLachlan, but Baker has opted to keep her in Sydney for an 1100-metre two-year-old handicap at Randwick.

With $300,000 on offer in the McLachlan, and the Sydney race worth $160,000, both events can help Paradoxium and Masvingo accumulate prize-money with a view to qualifying for the $5 million Golden Slipper Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) at Rosehill on March 21.

What's On

Both races are also seen by Baker as stepping stones to the $3 million Magic Millions 2YO Classic at the Gold Coast on January 17, the prize-money for which does not count towards Slipper qualification, due to the race being restricted to Magic Millions graduates only.

Not only do Paradoxium and Masvingo sport the same colours - Ridgmont’s navy with a gold sash and sleeves as carried to dual Group 1 success by Baker stable star Stefi Magnetica (All Too Hard) - but they’re also off the same stud. Both were purchased from the draft of Steve Grant’s southern highlands operation Silverdale Farm at the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale last January.

Bred by Grant in association with Carpe Diem Asset Management and Brian McGuire, Paradoxium was bought by Baker, Ridgmont and the regular buyer for both - Jim Clarke Bloodstock - for $400,000.

A couple of hours later, Ridgmont and Clarke teamed up to buy the Grant-bred Masvingo, also from Silverdale’s draft, for $580,000.

Masvingo took bragging rights at Sydney’s first official two-year-old trials at Kensington on September 22, winning impressively by 1.4 lengths while Paradoxium managed a 2.4-length second in his heat behind I’m Ya Huckleberry (Home Affairs).

The filly also narrowly trumped the colt in their racing debuts, with Masvingo’s Gimcrack third outshining Paradoxium’s fourth in the Breeders’ Plate (Gr 3, 1000m).

At Wyong, however, it was a no-contest in the colt’s favour. Having had two more trials for two more wins, Paradoxium - with regular rider Jason Collett aboard - raced on the pace and booted clear in the straight to score by 2.8 lengths.

Masvingo was bustled up to hold a midfield position in the seven-horse contest - whereas she’d settled back and flown home in the Gimcrack - and ultimately did well to hold third.

Baker is tipping improvement from the filly off that run, but there’s no denying what appears to be a ton of raw ability in Paradoxium.

The colt is currently favourite for the Magic Millions 2YO Classic at $3.50. Second favourite at $4.50 is yet another runner from the Baker-Ridgmont axis - Saturday’s impressive Randwick 1000-metre winner Warwoven (Sword Of State), while Masvingo is at $15.

And fresh off his best two-year-old season to date in 2024-25 through horses including triple stakes winner Within The Law (Lucky Vega) and Gold Coast 2YO Classic queen O’ Ole (Ole Kirk), Baker has high hopes his latest crop can shine as well.

“I think Paradoxium is very promising,” Baker told ANZ News. “He’s got a great attitude, and his work has been very good. What we’ve seen at home suggests he’s right up there.

“I guess on Saturday we’ll learn a bit more, and then it’s onto the Magic Millions, but at this stage I’m very happy with him.

“His win at Wyong was very, very good. I’m still confident he’ll probably improve off that as well, and up to the 1200 metres, I think it’ll be very exciting.

“I never get carried away with a first-up win like that, but he’s got a good base of fitness, and it will be a nice period of time between runs at 17 days.

“It’s hard to know what else is going to be in the race. It’ll be a competitive race, no doubt about it, but I’m looking forward to it.”

The 13 nominations for the McLachlan also include Ciaron Maher’s colt Tornado Valley (Too Darn Hot), who won Flemington’s Maribyrnong Plate (Gr 3, 1000m) on Melbourne Cup day at his second and latest start.

There’s also Team Munce’s colt Zip Lock (Hellbent), who won over 1200 metres at Doomben on November 15 by 1.6 lengths at his only start, and Liam Birchley’s filly Remembrall (Spirit Of Boom), who also scored at Doomben on debut, over 1050 metres on October 25.

Baker was highly impressed with the yearling Paradoxium, the son of Newgate Farm’s sub-fertile sensation Extreme Choice (Not A Single Doubt) who’s the first foal out of Listed-placed Queensland mare Paredo (Better Than Ready).

“He was a lovely horse with a good attitude,” Baker said.

“He was an Extreme Choice, and you can’t fault what he’s done - he’s one of the best stallions in the country without a doubt. Plus this horse has a good pedigree, with a lot of depth there, and Silverdale produces good horses.

“He’s come along really well. His win at Wyong was very, very good.

“Jason Collett knew what he was on. He’d ridden him in all his trials and races and trackwork leading in, so he was very confident. The horse had to absorb pressure early and won easily, so the win definitely had a lot of merit.”

In contrast, Masvingo was perhaps asked to do more than she’d wanted in being pushed up through the first half of the race. Baker is hopeful that the lessons learnt will help her cause at Randwick on Saturday.

“She was good at Wyong,” he said. “We probably just rode her out of her comfort zone. Paradoxium went quick early and we tried to make use of our good gate with Masvingo, so she probably didn’t finish off as well as she can.

“So I think she’ll improve off that run. We don’t have to be negative on Saturday, but we’ll maybe put her in her comfort zone a bit more.”

Masvingo is the second foal out of Rotator (Not A Single Doubt), who won three times, including at city level, and ran second at two in the Widden Stakes (Gr 3, 1100m). Rotator is also a half-sister to Positive Peace (Stratum), who Baker trained for nine wins including Rosehill’s Emancipation Stakes (Gr 2, 1500m) and Rosehill’s Nivison (Gr 3, 1200m), both in 2020.

“She was a nice filly by a proven sire in Zoustar,” Baker said. “And Rotator was a good, early-going filly, and the fact she was from the same family as Positive Peace made appeal for me. And again she was from a good place in Silverdale Farm.

“Looking at her as a yearling you thought she’d definitely be a chance to get back up to the Gold Coast for the big two-year-old race, so fingers crossed that will happen.”

With Paradoxium, Warwoven and Masvingo showing out early for the Baker-Ridgmont alliance in what could be a three-pronged assault on the MM Gold Coast 2YO Classic, Baker is allowing himself to hope 2025-26 could be another huge year in terms of his two-year-olds.

“Last season was a great year. We won more prize-money with two-year-olds than anyone else, predominantly through O’Ole and Within The Law,” Baker said.

“And this season has also been very good so far with the two-year-olds. It’s great to be associated with Ridgmont. Jim Clarke is the common denominator there, since he buys my horses and he buys for Ridgmont too. We’ve had a lot of luck together, so long may that continue.”

The flagbearer for that union - Stefi Magnetica - is back in work, Baker said. She may defend her Doncaster Mile (Gr 1, 1600m) crown, though there is thought also to stretching her in distance for a tilt at Randwick’s Queen Elizabeth Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m).

O’ Ole, who ran fourth second-up in MM’s Wyong 3YO & 4YO Stakes (1200m) on December 10, will barrier trial at Rosehill on Tuesday as she builds towards the $3 million Magic Millions 3YO Guineas (RL, 1400m).

Within The Law, whose spring was highlighted by second place in Randwick’s Flight Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m), is still spelling and will target a return in the late autumn, likely with an eye to the Brisbane winter carnival.

Tavi Time bidding to defend Summer Cup crown

Tavi Time (Credit: Sportpix)

Tavi Time (Tavistock) is aiming to become just the second horse in nearly a century to win back-to-back Summer Cups (Gr 3, 2000m) at Randwick on Friday, and both jockey Dylan Gibbons and trainer Kris Lees believe he’s going well enough to do it. The six-year-old rises from 53 kilograms to 56 kilograms after his rating jumped nine points across the year, largely thanks to his Scone Cup (Listed, 1600m) victory. Only I’m Imposing (Danehill Dancer) has defended the Summer Cup title since the 1920s. Gibbons said a slow getaway cost the gelding when ninth in The Ingham (Gr 2, 1600m) but liked what he saw late. “He doesn’t jump great and he doesn’t muster quick, so he gets spat out the back,’’ he told Racing NSW. “But he ran some of the best sectionals. As long as he takes that to 2000 metres, he’s got more time and fewer runners to round up.” Tavi Time was able to settle midfield in an 11-horse field last year before running down Osipenko (Pierro). “There’s a very electric version of him,’’ Gibbons said. “If he lets down like he can, he’ll be very competitive.” Lees agrees the gelding is in similar, if not better, shape than 12 months ago after honest efforts in the Big Dance (1600m), The Gong (1600m) and The Ingham. “With the grade he’s racing in now he needs to execute right,’’ Lees said. “It looks a strong Summer Cup but softer than his previous three. He keeps running terrific sectionals – he’s going well.”

King Of Pop to trial at Rosehill

King Of Pop (Farnan) will look to strengthen his bid for a lucrative slot in the $3 million The Sunlight (1100m) when he steps out for a searching trial at Rosehill on Tuesday. The Gerald Ryan and Sterling Alexiou-trained three-year-old contests the opening 1030-metre heat, and a strong showing could see him head north for the Gold Coast feature on January 10, a slot race for three-year-olds introduced last year. A talented juvenile, King Of Pop won on debut at Warwick Farm and quickly followed with victory in the Black Opal Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) before contesting the Golden Slipper (Gr 1, 1200m), then finishing runner-up in the Kindergarten Stakes (Gr 3, 1100m). But a spring campaign that failed to fire prompted connections to geld the colt. “He just didn’t quite come up,” Alexiou said. “He has always been a quiet horse, but he was racing a bit keen and not finishing off. He’s been gelded now, so hopefully we see the King Of Pop of old.” The gelding has trialled once this prep, finishing second over 799 metres at Warwick Farm on December 8, and Tuesday’s heat will largely determine whether he earns a Sunlight slot. “There has been interest,” Alexiou said. “He’ll be out to do a bit, and we’ll get a line on how he’s going to make sure he warrants a trip up there and is going to be competitive.” If selected, King Of Pop would head into The Sunlight first-up. Jay Ford is booked to ride in Tuesday’s trial.

Bedggood’s Kingswood to head to NZ for Group 1

Cranbourne trainer Gavin Bedggood has made the trip to New Zealand as he prepares to saddle his first international runner, with Kingswood (Roaring Lion) set for Friday’s Zabeel Classic (Gr 1, 2000m) at Ellerslie on Boxing Day. The mission is twofold: to secure a breakthrough Group 1 win and to enhance the entire’s prospects at stud. “He’s a stallion with a good pedigree, but he’s not a sexy horse in Australia,” Bedggood said. “I think he would be commercial in that environment, so if he was able to go over there and jag one, that would be good. There are races over there in the autumn for him too, but we’ll reassess after Boxing Day.” A son of Roaring Lion (Kitten's Joy), Kingswood raced in Ireland before joining the Maddie Raymond stable, eventually transferring to Bedggood. The now six-year-old has enjoyed a strong 2024, highlighted by victory in the Coongy Cup (Gr 3, 2000m) and the Kirin Ichiban Plate (Listed, 1800m) on Melbourne Cup Day. Bedgood said his latest outing, a fourth in the Ballarat Cup (Listed, 2000m), can be forgiven. “Ballarat was too wet, so you can put a pen through that,” he said. “He was great the start before at Flemington and if he gets the ground that he needs, he’ll be right amongst the action.” Kingswood impressed in his final piece of work on Saturday morning, which Bedggood described as among his best. With no return flight scheduled until January 12, the entire will spend time in the paddock in New Zealand post-race as future plans are assessed. Rory Hutchings has been booked for the ride.

Slipper hope Incognito set for trials

Michael Freedman will roll out a strong team at the trials from early January as he again targets the Golden Slipper, with back-to-back wins firmly on his radar. His leading hope is impressive Breeders’ Plate (Gr 3, 1000m) winner Incognito (Stay Inside), who returns in the Canonbury Stakes (Gr 3, 1100m) later next month before heading to the Silver Slipper (Gr 2, 1100m). The current $11 TAB equal Slipper favourite, Incognito was kept away from the Magic Millions so connections could focus purely on the $5 million feature. “Because we opted to bypass the Magic Millions and give him a nice break he had a good spell, He’s come back a little bit stronger…a more furnished horse,” Freedman told Racing NSW. The colt already has $141,000 in the bank, and while Freedman believes Breeders’ Plate winners should be guaranteed a Slipper start, he’s confident Incognito will earn his way in. “If you belong in the Slipper, you’ll find your way there,’’ he said. Incognito is one of several stable stars preparing for the autumn, including high-class fillies Apocalyptic (Extreme Choice) and Marhoona (Snitzel), as well as Ohope (I Am Invincible), Ruination (Wootton Bassett) and Enriched (I Am Invincible). Last year’s Slipper winner Marhoona resumed with a Heritage Stakes (Listed, 1100m) victory but her spring was cut short after the Roman Consul Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m). “She had a couple of niggles last prep,’’ Freedman said. “After she was beaten second-up we stopped and gave her the rest of the spring. I’m glad we did.” Freedman plans to separate Marhoona and Flight Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) winner Apocalyptic where possible. The latter resumes in the Light Fingers Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) on February 14 before the Surround Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m), where she sits on the second line of betting at $4.50 behind Everest (Gr 1, 1200m) runner-up Tempted (Street Boss). “She’s lightly raced and has furnished really well,’’ Freedman said. “We’ll trial her mid-January and again late in the month before she kicks off.”

Magic Millions order of entries updated

Racing Queensland has released updated order of entry tables for the $3 million Magic Millions 2YO Classic (RL, 1200m) and 3YO Guineas (RL, 1400m), with three sharp debut winners jumping straight into the top ten for the January 17 Gold Coast feature. Friday’s impressive The Debut 2YO (1000m) winner Lumbini (Russian Revolution) has surged into second in the ballot, while Ciaron Maher’s eye-catching debutant Unit Five (Supido) now sits fifth. At Randwick, Bjorn Baker’s debut victor Warwoven (Sword Of State) has climbed to eighth. That trio also dominate the betting immediately behind long-time favourite Paradoxium (Extreme Choice) ($3.50). Warwoven has been supported into $4.50, with Lumbini ($6.00) and Unit Five ($7.00) rounding out the leading chances. In the 3YO Guineas, all attention stays on Cool Archie (Cool Aza Beel) and whether he will take his place. The gelding remains favourite in early markets, but was scratched from his intended return last week after pulling up sore in trackwork. Results from further scans are still pending. One significant mover is last Friday’s Gold Coast winner Swordplay (Shalaa), who jumps to 13th in the ballot and is now assured of a start. More updates to the order of entry will follow as key trials and final lead-up runs take place over the next fortnight.

Telegraph record-holder happy with ‘J-Mac’ booking

Few know the Telegraph (Gr 1, 1200m) better than Lance O’Sullivan, a record six-time winner of the Trentham sprint as a jockey and co-trainer of last year’s victor Grail Seeker (Iffraaj). The decision to secure James McDonald for emerging mare Tomodachi (Tarzino) is therefore as strong an endorsement as any ahead of the 2026 edition on January 3. Tomodachi has firmed into $3.80 favouritism following news that McDonald will make a special trip to Trentham for the $550,000 feature. Grail Seeker, who will again be ridden by Joe Doyle, sits on the second line of betting at $5 alongside Crocetti (Zacinto). McDonald won the Telegraph 14 years ago on Guiseppina (Johar), who raced in the colours of Sir Peter Vela – the same ownership link that led to his engagement this year. “The booking was made by Sir Peter’s racing manager Gary Cossey and we were very happy to receive confirmation,’’ O’Sullivan said. “James is a world-class jockey, he knows how to win the Telegraph, and Tomodachi is right on target.” Both Tomodachi and Grail Seeker pleased connections with separate 1100-metre trial placings last week at Matamata. “We’re happy with both mares… we’re confident they’re on target,” O’Sullivan said.

Tyler excited about Freddie Time’s prospects

Freddie Time (Credit: Race Images)

Kelvin Tyler believes exciting stayer Freddie Time (Time Test) is on a rapid upward trajectory after the four-year-old went within a nose of landing last Saturday’s Manawatu Cup (Gr 3, 2300m) at Trentham. The son of Time Test (Dubawi) showed promise last season, winning on debut before finishing third in the Dunedin Guineas (Listed, 1600m) and fourth in the Manawatu Classic (Gr 3, 2100m). Tyler even campaigned him in Australia over winter, and while unplaced, the gelding took significant improvement from the trip. Now based at Howie Mathews’ Otaki barn, Freddie Time has won twice this preparation and produced a powerful late surge on Saturday to almost catch runaway leader Sagunto (O’Reilly). “It was really exciting,” Tyler said. “He has really come forward and he’s going to go to the top, I’m pretty sure about that. He’s only four.” Freddie Time has bounced through the run and is set to contest the Marton Cup (Listed, 2200m) back at Trentham on January 3, rather than heading north. “I thought about the Queen Elizabeth at Ellerslie, but it’s coming up a bit quick with the trip away and you never know how the track will play,” Tyler said. “We’ll be patient and go to the Marton Cup.” Tyler also enjoyed a Sunday double at Gore with Fourofus (Tivaci) and Mamaea (Ribchester), and is upbeat ahead of Boxing Day at Wingatui where he saddles five runners. Among them is in-form mare Indie Ardie (Ardrossan), who has been flying this prep, and veteran stayer Prince Alby (Sacred Falls), who begins his path toward the Wellington Cup (Gr 3, 3200m). Promising filly Ripa Time (Time Test) chases black-type in the Airfreight Stakes (Listed, 1400m), while Flash Roca (El Roca) and Sight To See (Time Test) line up in the ODT Southern Mile Heat (1600m). “They’ve all come forward,” Tyler said. “I’m excited about Friday.”

HK: Regal Gem chases three straight at Happy Valley

Frankie Lor believes progressive three-year-old Regal Gem (Zoustar) (120lb) can complete a hat-trick when he tackles Tuesday’s Class 2 Neptune Handicap (1650m) at Happy Valley, provided he handles the rise in trip. The gelding has yet to race beyond 1400 metres in Hong Kong but arrives in top form, having strung together back-to-back Class 3 wins. A dual winner in Britain and Group 3-placed at the Curragh before being imported, Regal Gem has now won three of eight Hong Kong starts and sits equal-leader of the 2025/26 DBS x Manulife Million Challenge on 36 points. Victory on Tuesday would add a crucial 15 points. “His form is good,” Lor said. “We’ve put Zac Purton on because Derek Leung is suspended. It’s his first time over 1650 metres – we need to try because there are no other Class 2 races for him. The pace should be quick, so hopefully it will be okay.” Lor, closing in on 500 Hong Kong wins, saddles nine runners on the card, including Symbol Of Strength (Kodiac) (130lb) in the Class 3 Uranus Handicap (1200m). “He’s run well in his last two starts at the Valley. Last time he was stuck inside with nowhere to go. James Orman rides him.” Dual Group 3 winner Money Catcher (Ferlax) (121lb) contests the Class 3 Saturn Handicap (2200m). “His form is good and I always want to get prize money for the owner,” Lor said. Rival trainer Pierre Ng saddles four-time winner I Can (Iffraaj) (115lb) in the Neptune Handicap. “He was unlucky last start with the slow pace. With a light weight he’ll finish off well,” Ng said. Ng also confirmed stable star Galaxy Patch (Wandjina) will return in the Stewards’ Cup (Gr 1, 1600m) on January 25.
