Lot 250: I Am Invincible ex Eloping colt (Credit: Magic Millions)

Fresh from topping the averages again last year and buoyed by a string of stakes results for its produce this season, Segenhoe Stud is primed for a strong Magic Millions Yearling Sale with a draft Peter O’Brien rates as the best group on type his historic farm has taken to the Gold Coast.

While O’Brien does not expect to replicate the stud’s phenomenal Gold Coast sale of 2024, when seven of its lots fetched seven figures, Segenhoe’s general manager is expecting strong results from an array of “extremely high quality” individuals from his 30-strong draft.

Including full brothers to the outstanding In Secret (I Am Invincible) and her fellow elite-level-winning sprinting mare Benedetta (Hellbent), and laced with sires including Home Affairs (I Am Invincible), Anamoe (Street Boss) and Frankel (Galileo), Segenhoe’s draft is likely to push the Hunter Valley institution high on the stats table again.

On averages, Segenhoe led the sale against all comers last year, and was on top for farms with more than three lots sold in its bumper 2024. It beat all comers again in 2023 and was first for more than ten yearlings moved in 2022.

What's On

O’Brien is not tipping a repeat of 2024, but is confident buyers will be taken with Segenhoe’s draft this time around.

“We won’t be having that big number of million-dollar yearlings as we had two years ago, mainly because we’re not stacked with a lot of big, proven sires,” O’Brien told ANZ News.

“We don’t have that big, big number of I Am Invincibles or Zoustars that’ll end up making seven figures or more, although we do have some beautiful Anamoes, who’s quickly become my favourite stallion that’s ever walked the earth.

“But I would say that overall as types, it’s probably the best group of horses we’ve taken to this sale.”

Segenhoe’s draft is highlighted, unsurprisingly, by Lot 250, a bay son of triple champion sire I Am Invincible (Invincible Spirit) who’s a full-brother to In Secret, Australia’s Champion 3YO Filly and Female Sprinter of 2022-23.

The colt’s other full-sister sold for $2.3 million to the Laguna Partnership and John Sargent Racing as the third-highest lot at this auction last year, while Segenhoe sold another full-sister in the 2024 edition for $1.15 million, to Belmont Bloodstock. In Secret herself fetched $900,000 at the Gold Coast in 2021, bought by Godolphin.

Lot 250’s value is enhanced by the fact he’s only the second colt among seven live foals for dam Eloping (Choisir), and because that five-time stakes-winning mare is empty this season after missing to I Am Invincible and Anamoe late last year.

“You’d think he would have to be in the top five per cent of the sale,” O’Brien said of the muscular bay.

“It’s great that Eloping has had a colt. In Secret was a beautiful yearling and sold very well. She was quite elegant as a yearling, but this fella’s got muscle on muscle. He’s a very mature, robust, obvious sprinter type, with a terrific action. He’s as good a Vinnie as you’d see. Plus everything out of Eloping have great minds, like she does.”

Segenhoe’s Lot 972 is by Hellbent (I Am Invincible) out of the Group 2-placed Whatalovelyday (Domesday), making him a full-brother to Goodwood Handicap (Gr 1, 1200m) winner Benedetta.

Half-sister Sunset Dreaming (Impending) - a four-time winner including in city grade - has been Listed placed in Brisbane in her past two starts this summer. Another half-sister Whatafox (Foxwedge) is twice stakes-placed, while half-brother Whatalegacy (King’s Legacy) has two provincial wins and a city second from three starts for Bjorn Baker.

“I love Domesday mares, and we bought Whatalovelyday carrying this fella, and when he was born we were all patting ourselves on the back,” O’Brien said.

“He’s a big, imposing colt, with beautiful colour and head, good limbs and a good action. He’s a brother to a Group 1 winner and two other black type performers, and I think it’ll be three other black type performers soon, because I think Whatalegacy will prove a stakes horse. So she’s a proper mare, Whatalovelyday.”

Like most stud farms, Segenhoe has handled many offspring of the late, great four-time champion sire Snitzel (Redoute’s Choice). O’Brien feels Lot 183 could top the lot that he’s known.

He’s the second foal of American mare Complicit (Blame), a Listed-placed three-time winner from 1600-1700 metres who’s by the same sire - Blame (Arch) - as the dam of one of Snitzel’s recent stars, Coolmore Stud Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) hero Switzerland.

“We’ve had a lot of Snitzels in my time and I humbly think he’s the best one I’ve had,” O’Brien said. “He’s out of a good American mare, he’s balance personified, with a huge hip and a beautiful mind. You see him come to the fore when you lunge him - he’s just got this incredible action.”

Segenhoe offers no fewer than five yearlings by Darley’s debutant sire Anamoe.

They include Lot 407, a half-sister to the outstanding triple Group 1 winner Joliestar (Zoustar) out of Group 2 winner Jolie Bay (Fastnet Rock), one of the finest offspring of her influential dam Legally Bay (Snippets).

“This filly’s thrown a lot to her distaff side,” O’Brien said. “I’ve been fortunate enough to have this family all the way through, and this one has the classic physique of the family, being short-coupled, sprinting types.

“She reminds me of Legally Bay in every way, in the head and the fact she’s very precocious.

“She’s a half-sister to Joliestar and two other stakes performers, and of all our Anamoes, she looks the most precocious. She’s fast and early and with huge residual value.”

Segenhoe’s faith in Anamoe is represented by the fact they’ve sent 44 mares to him in his first three years at stud. They include city winner Catwalk (Foxwedge), who’s produced a filly who’s Lot 155 in Segenhoe’s draft.

“She ticks every box,” O’Brien said. “She’s a big strong filly who exudes quality, has a wonderful mind and a walk to die for.”

O’Brien also has a huge wrap on Anamoe’s Lot 323, the second foal of Goddess (Fastnet Rock), a half-sister to three stakes winners including Orr Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) hero Manuel (Commands).

“I’ve been like a scratched record on this filly from the day she was born. I’ve run out of superlatives to describe her. She’s the most beautiful filly you’d see in your life,” O’Brien said.

“Ciaron Maher trained Goddess. She was beating everything in the stable, but had one race and broke down, but we know the ability she had, and she’s from a brilliant family.”

Segenhoe has another Anamoe in Lot 694, the colt fifth foal of city winner Pretty Fast (Not A Single Doubt), a full-sister to dual stakes winners Doubtland, from the same family as dual black-type-winning Melbourne filly My Gladiola (I Am Invincible).

And Lot 899 is a colt out of Tessneem (Lonhro), a winning full-sister to the triple stakes victor - and stakes-producing - mare Heatherly.

Of Anamoe, O’Brien said: “He’s the most beautiful stallion with the most amazing action. He performed at two, three and four - he danced every dance. It’s a testament to him that each year he’s been at stud we’ve sent more and more mares to him, based on what’s been coming out.

“We have some lovely Anamoes going to the sale and he’s now my favourite stallion that ever took a breath.”

Another Segenhoe highlight is Lot 203, a filly by Home Affairs (I Am Invincible) out of five-time West Australian stakes winner Dance Music (War Chant). She’ll enter the sale fresh off her sire providing the quinella in Ellerslie’s Eclipse Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) on New Year’s Day via colt Kinnaird and gelding Harvey Wallbanger.

Coolmore’s Home Affairs - who had the top lots at the Gold Coast and Inglis Easter as a debutant sire last year - has three winners from 11 runners in Australia and New Zealand.

He’s the most beautiful stallion with the most amazing action. He performed at two, three and four - he danced every dance. It’s a testament to him that each year he’s been at stud we’ve sent more and more mares to him, based on what’s been coming out

PETER O'BRIEN

“Home Affairs has put not one but two hands up to say he could be the next big thing, based on the performances of his two-year-olds in New Zealand and Australia,” O’Brien said.

“That’s surprised me a little, because I thought the earliest Home Affairs stock would be performing in the late autumn, because they’re big horses. So it’s really encouraging to see them coming out before and around Christmas.

“This one’s a leggy filly with beautiful quality. She’ll be well sought after.”

Segenhoe offers three Frankels including Lot 59, a colt second foal of Antibes (Lonhro), an unraced mare from breeder John Camilleri’s stakes-winning and stakes-producing mare A Time For Julia (Redoute’s Choice).

Other Segenhoe highlights include two fillies by I Am Invincible in Lot 45, out of fast American Listed winner Always Inthe Munny (Munnings), and Lot 455, a daughter of Blue Diamond Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) runner-up Lankan Star (Nicconi) who O’Brien said was “extremely popular” at his farm’s yearling parades.

O’Brien is expecting a reasonably strong sale, especially in terms of the top-end lots. But like certain other vendors, he anticipates some softness at the lower end, likely a growing condition related to the increasing popularity of online sales of tried horses.

“I don’t want to sound too negative, but the reality is that the middle and the top will be fine, but the struggle might be with the horses selling for $200,000 or less,” the veteran breeder said.

“For smaller trainers with lesser animals, buying tried horses seems to be the way they’re going, and that has to have some impact on those 200k or less horses.

“That’ll be good for buyers. Especially because when you look at the results from Magic Millions, and the good horses who’ve come out of that bracket, that’s where the value is.

“I can guess some of the horses in our draft who’ll be in that bracket, and some of them are very nice animals. So there’s extraordinary value there, because the catalogue gets stronger and stronger, and the support from the farms is still the same, so there’s happy hunting to be found there.

“But still, every year the Magic Millions surprises me, and has done ever since I’ve come here with horses. I’ve said similar things before and it’s always turned out to be a great sale, and I’m sure it’ll be the same again.”

Segenhoe heads to the sale with a spring in its step after a sequence of black type results in recent weeks and months from its sales graduates, including Transatlantic (Snitzel) winning Caulfield’s Toorak Handicap (Gr 1, 1600m) and Pride Of Jenni (Pride Of Dubai) taking her fourth elite success in Flemington’s Empire Rose Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m).

Victories last Saturday for Jenni The Fox (Too Darn Hot) in Geelong’s Black Pearl Stakes (Listed, 1200m) and Ninja (Farnan) in Eagle Farm’s Vo Rogue Plate (Gr 3, 1300m) extended Segenhoe’s lead over Arrowfield Stud in the unofficial Australian vendors premiership. Compiled by website blacktyperacing.au, the table allocates points for horses put through sales by vendors determined by placings in stakes races.

“Our farm has had an extraordinary start again this season, with already 15 stakes performers including Group 1 winners Transatlantic and Pride Of Jenni,” O’Brien said.

“To be well ahead on the vendors premiership says a lot about the farm itself and our team. Our horses are doing the talking for us, and because we only sell 50 yearlings a year compared to some of the bigger farms that sell 150 to 200, it emphasises how well horses off the farm are running.”

Pfieffer confident Ice Kool can shine in Sunlight

Ice Kool (Credit: Sportpix)

David Pfieffer believes emerging three-year-old Ice Kool (Zoustar) is capable of measuring up in Saturday night’s $3 million Magic Millions Sunlight 3YO Plate (1100m) at the Gold Coast. The slot race, won last year by subsequent Group 1 winner Private Harry (Harry Angel), has drawn a field of 12, with Ice Kool to jump from barrier nine under the slot of prominent owner Max Whitby. An impressive 3.5-length debut winner at Warwick Farm on December 3, Ice Kool backed up with a dominant Benchmark 72 (1100m) victory at Randwick on December 27, convincing Pfieffer to press on with a northern raid. "He's going to go into this race probably better prepared than last start," Pfieffer said. "Last start, he was three and a half weeks between runs. And now, he's going into it two weeks between runs, and it hopefully should suit him well. He had a quiet week last week, had a gallop on Saturday with Jason [Collett] on board and had his final gallop Tuesday morning. He'll get on a truck Thursday night and head to Queensland." Pfieffer said Ice Kool needed to take a significant step forward at his second start to earn a slot in the race. "He'd done a few little things wrong, and he still does a few little things wrong, but he's getting better every trial and every start," he said. "To get a slot, you've got to prove yourself. Throwing him in a Saturday race was a big step, but he stepped up. If he hadn't got the job done, well, he doesn't get a slot.” While Ice Kool has led in both starts, Pfieffer is hopeful the race shape will suit. "He can be slow out, which he has been his last two starts," he said. "He's not lightning out of the gates; Swordplay is going to launch out of the gates, so that might just create that hole in behind them."

Hayes pleased with progressive Stealth Of Night

Will Hayes believes Irish import Stealth Of Night (Night Of Thunder) has the talent to progress beyond benchmark grade, but says the immediate focus is on continuing her momentum as she lines up at Flemington on Saturday. The mare will contest the $130,000 Benchmark 74 over 1400 metres, chasing a hat-trick of wins following successive Benchmark 70 victories at Sandown in December. "She's a very exciting mare, she's had quite an intensive injury history previous to this preparation and it's just taken time to get it back to where she needs to be," Hayes, who trains in partnership with brothers Ben and JD, said. "She's been very tough the way that she's won at Sandown, doing all the work from wide gates and then lifting herself off the canvas and putting them away. The way that she's been winning in the benchmark races suggests he has a very good ability to progress." The Trilogy Racing-owned mare rises to a rating of 78 and will carry 60 kilograms, with the stable considering a 3-kilogram claim from apprentice Jackson Radley. Stealth Of Night was narrowly beaten first-up at Cranbourne and has now won four of her six starts, with her recent consistency particularly pleasing after an injury-interrupted early career. "Because she missed so much of her racing life being injured, we did go the conservative approach, to build her through the grades, but she has good ability and now she's really coping with every challenge we give her," Hayes said.

Snowden confident Infusion can rebound at Warwick Farm

Peter Snowden expects a much-improved performance from Infusion (I Am Invincible) when the lightly raced mare returns to the track at Warwick Farm on Wednesday. The four-year-old disappointed as a $4 chance at Randwick a week and a half ago, finishing near the tail of the field, but Snowden is adamant the run should be forgiven after little went right during the race. Infusion will step out in the Ole Kirk Yearlings Handicap (1200m), where Snowden believes a better draw and a slight drop in class will see her far more competitive. “She drew wide [last start] and I gave Tom [Sherry] an open hand about whether to go forward or back,’’ Snowden told Racing NSW. “There was a line of eight there for about a furlong so he went back and they strung out. About four or five others went back and she got in behind them and got further back than we wanted to be. It was impossible for her, she made up some ground late but she got tired. She’ll improve from it, a better draw and down a little bit in class so I’d expect a good deal of improvement second-up.” Snowden is hopeful jockey Jason Collett can take advantage of Infusion’s natural speed and have her settle closer to the action. “In her runs prior to going out she was on speed. She’ll probably be in the first four or five,’’ he said. Her work has been good and she’s not far off where she was before she went out so hopefully we’ll see that sort of run.”

Half Yours set for 2026 campaign

Half Yours (St Jean) is in the early stages of his latest preparation and co-trainer Calvin McEvoy is encouraged by how the Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) winner has returned to work. “The 23rd of December he came back in, so he's just in the very early stages of the preparation, but he's having a light canter and he looks terrific,” McEvoy, who trains in partnership with father Tony, said. “We're very pleased with him. He had 7.5 weeks off and he looks a different horse. He's put a lovely cover on and softened up and there's plenty of work with.” The son of the late St Jean (Teofilo) has been back in work for a fortnight after almost two months off following a ten-start campaign that culminated in Group 1 wins in the Caulfield Cup (2400m) and Melbourne Cup. McEvoy said the gelding is likely to resume in the $1.5 million All Aged Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) at Randwick on April 18 before returning to Queensland, with a Cox Plate (Gr 1, 2040m) start among options on a path back towards another Melbourne Cup.

Lady Of Camelot eyes Royal Ascot after autumn campaign

Lady Of Camelot (Credit: Sportpix)

A tilt at Royal Ascot in June remains on the agenda for 2024 Golden Slipper (Gr 1, 1200m) winner Lady Of Camelot (Written Tycoon), with connections planning an autumn campaign in Sydney before considering the trip to England. “If she returns in great nick, we would love to run her at Royal Ascot,” Steve O’Connor, director at Sir Owen Glenn’s Go Bloodstock, which bred and races the four-year-old, told Racing.com. “It would be great to take a Golden Slipper winner to Ascot. It would be really special as she is a homebred Golden Slipper winner. We’re excited by the prospect and think she has what it takes to run well and even win over there.” Trained by Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott, Lady Of Camelot will be aimed at autumn features including the TJ Smith Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) and All Aged Stakes. “Blake Shinn has always thought she would be a great All Aged Stakes horse, so that’s definitely a race we will target; whether we go to the TJ on the way through… we will work that out,” O’Connor said. By Written Tycoon (Iglesia) out of Listed scorer Miss Debutante (Fastnet Rock), Lady Of Camelot’s potential success overseas would enhance her value and that of her already highly successful family. “If she were to go and run well, it would be great for her value and the value of her family,” O’Connor said. “We’ve got all of the family.” Since her Golden Slipper victory, Lady Of Camelot has finished in the top three seven times from nine starts, including fourth in the 2024 edition of The Everest (Gr 1, 1200m), compiling two wins and eight placings from 13 starts for earnings just shy of $6 million.

Veight also nearing return

Group 1 winner Veight (Grunt) is likely to make his return to competitive racing at Pakenham on January 23 following an eight-month absence. The son of Grunt (O'Reilly), trained by Calvin McEvoy in partnership with his father Tony, has not raced since being eased up in the Doomben 10,000 (Gr 1, 1200m) in May, after which he suffered a neck injury. "He obviously had an injury to his neck, which happened up in Queensland in the paddock, so he's had a lot of time, but all the signs are pretty good," Calvin McEvoy told Racing.com. Veight is scheduled to have his third jump-out at Flemington on Friday, which will help determine whether he resumes in the Australia Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m), to be run at Pakenham this year. "He's going to jump out on Friday at Flemington. We'll look to potentially target him towards the Australia Stakes first-up, which is at Pakenham this year, a track that he's won at before and then we'll just see where we're at from there," McEvoy said. "That will be a bit of a deciding race, but we think he's going well." Veight won the Australia Stakes in 2024 when the race was held at Moonee Valley.

Newitt eyes record-extending Devonport Cup win

Craig Newitt will chase a record-extending tenth success in the Devonport Cup (1880m) when he partners Earendel (Needs Further) in Wednesday’s $125,000 edition of the race. His first victory in the race came in 2002 aboard Chardere (Aliocha), which proved a defining moment that helped launch his career. "It was only a couple of days later that the Freedman brothers asked me to join the team, so it was a race that they took notice of and one that really projected my career," Newitt told Racing.com. The rider is confident the $4 favourite can deliver having been aimed at the race for some time. "He's a great chance," he said. "He's been targeted for the race from a long way out. I got my first sit on him the other day and learnt a fair bit about him, so I think the main key with him will be if I can get him to settle in the first part of the race, I've got no doubt that he's the best horse in the race and he'll take a power of beating." Wednesday’s meeting will also mark a milestone for Tasmanian racing, with full coverage of the ten-race card broadcast on Racing.com, something Newitt believes will provide a significant boost for the local industry. "I think it's amazing," he said. "I've been trying hard for a long time to get them on Racing.com. It's free to air, so you get a lot of people who wouldn't necessarily be involved in racing flick through on the free-to-air channels. It will be nice to get them on and I'm sure they'll get a good audience."

Blackadder targets first Reefton win with Ears Back

Former West Coaster John Blackadder is aiming for his first win at his old hometown track, Reefton, on Wednesday, where he will be represented by six runners. “I think I have won a race on just about every course in the South Island, but I have never won one at Reefton, my old hometown,” he said. “I have got a six-pronged attack on Wednesday.” His lead runner will be Group 3 winner Ears Back (Jakkalberry) in the Reefton Cup (1400m). The seven-year-old mare drops back from elite company, having last raced in the Mufhasa Classic (Gr 1, 1600m) at Trentham where she finished ninth. “She was just a bit outclassed,” Blackadder said. “It was a brilliant Group 1 field, and she led them with 150 metres to go, so it wasn’t a bad effort overall.” After a short spell, Ears Back resumes at Reefton carrying 60 kilograms, with apprentice Jack Taplin to take three kilograms off. “The trip took a wee bit out of her so I gave her a couple of weeks off,” Blackadder said. “I haven’t brought her over here [West Coast] before and it will give her a nice run back. It is my old hometown so it’s nice to bring a nice horse over here for the Cup.” If all goes to plan, Ears Back could return across the Cook Strait for further stakes assignments. “I might go up to the Central Districts for those Group 3 races,” Blackadder said. “She likes it up there.” Blackadder is equally confident about his other runners, particularly Crunchie Boy (Tavistock) in The Blackadder Brothers (1400m). “I am bringing six fresh runners. I am happy with the whole lot and the way they have been working, and I have got some nice draws,” he said. “I don’t think any race is easy, but it won’t be as strong as he faced last start at Wingatui.”

Trainers map lead-ups ahead of Herbie Dyke Stakes

With six weeks between summer’s premier middle-distance weight-for-age features, trainers are taking varied approaches to prepare their Herbie Dyke Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m) contenders. Last year’s Herbie Dyke winner El Vencedor (Shocking) is set to run in the Taranaki Cup (Gr 3, 1800m) at New Plymouth on January 24, while 2024 winner Legarto (Proisir) will use the Thorndon Mile (Gr 2, 1600m) at Trentham on January 17 as a lead-up to the $700,000 Te Rapa feature. “There is a glaring gap with no similar race between the Zabeel and Herbie Dyke, so that means running at New Plymouth two weeks before Te Rapa,” El Vencedor’s trainer Stephen Marsh said. “The timing is good and with the conditions being set weights and penalties, we know he’ll carry 59 kilos. There was a potential catch with New Plymouth clashing with the Karaka Millions meeting, but we’ve been lucky to engage an experienced jockey in Jonathan Riddell.” For Legarto, trainers Ken and Bev Kelso opted for the Thorndon Mile, now a handicap, as a lead-up, aided by the availability of rider Ryan Elliot. “It means dropping back in distance but in her favour is that the handicapper has indicated that she will carry 58 kilos in the Thorndon, which will enable Ryan to stay with her,” Ken Kelso said. “We needed a race of some sort given the gap between Ellerslie and Te Rapa, and the trip down to Trentham should benefit her as well. We did consider the Trentham Stakes on the same day as the Thorndon, but we weren’t that keen to step her up to 2100 metres and more importantly the set-weight and penalty conditions meant we would have had to find another rider.” Training partners Lance O’Sullivan and Andrew Scott will give Waitak (Proisir) a trial at Pukekohe on January 20 ahead of his Herbie Dyke bid. “We’re happy to keep him ticking over and give him a nice hitout at Pukekohe,” Scott said. “That should be all he needs along with his standard trackwork to have him in the right order for Te Rapa.”

HK: In-form Orman eyes more success at Happy Valley

James Orman is a man in flying form and the Australian jockey, buoyed by an extension to his riding contract which sees him remain in Hong Kong until the end of this season, heads to Happy Valley on Wednesday night with four mounts, including Superb Guy (Magna Grecia) in the Class 4 Hong Kong Club Challenge Cup Handicap (1650m). “I’ve had a fairly good start, so I have to try and keep the ball rolling," Orman said. "I’m happy to be able to stay for the rest of the season. I must thank The Hong Kong Jockey Club, and I just have to keep getting winners. From when I started out riding, to then winning a few Brisbane premierships, and then the next goal was to try and ride here. It’s good to be in Hong Kong, and to be able to be riding successfully, but obviously I want to get better and better.” Orman has six wins from his past 37 rides, enhancing his tally this term to 12 after 34 of the 88 scheduled fixtures. Yet to partner Superb Guy in a race, Orman – a three-time Brisbane Champion Jockey – galloped the Francis Lui-trained four-year-old on Sha Tin’s dirt course in 54.4s on Monday morning. “I rode him in trackwork; he went along nicely. He ran a nice third last start, so let’s see,” Orman said. “The good gate [one] is a help; it always does around Happy Valley.” Orman also partners Another Zonda (The Autumn Sun) in the Class 3 Des Voeux Handicap (1650m). “I’ve won on Another Zonda before. He’s drawn barrier ten, but he can race on speed and he’s always there around the mark. He ran well when I rode him and then in the International Jockeys’ Championship [sixth place on December 10] it was a strong race. He didn’t run too bad, but he’s capable of better than that and this looks a little bit easier,” Orman said.
