The Queensland training ranks will welcome a new name in February, with former Annabel and Rob Archibald assistant trainer Todd Pollard set to embark on his own training career.

Born and raised in Matamata, Pollard’s interest in racing was sparked early through family involvement, with an aunt breeding and racing several horses, including Taranaki Breeders (Evergreen) Stakes (Gr 3, 1400m) winner Rosetti Bay (Pins).

“My early interest was from my dad's auntie, raising horses, and having a couple of handy ones that piqued my interest, but I really enjoyed getting along to the races when I was young and just enjoyed the spectacle of it all. Obviously at that stage, you don't really think about having a career or anything like that,” Pollard told ANZ News.

What's On

That early fascination soon turned into hands-on experience when Pollard knocked on the door of leading trainer Graham Richardson looking for an after-school job at the age of 12.

“We moved next to Graham Richardson’s stable and I went and knocked on his door for an after-school job, and it just blossomed from there.

“Since then, silly as it sounds, I came home on day one, and I said to Mum, ‘I want to be a horse trainer when I'm older,’ and ever since then, I haven't thought of doing anything different,” he said.

Pollard spent five years learning the ropes under Richardson before broadening his horizons through further education and elite industry exposure. After finishing high school, he completed a Bachelor of Commerce at Massey University while building his résumé with roles that included a stint with John O’Shea, who was training for Godolphin at the time.

That pathway, along with time spent working with Lisa Latta and at Waikato Stud, culminated in selection for the prestigious Godolphin Flying Start program in 2016, providing Pollard with a global education in the thoroughbred industry.

“While I was still at high school, I found out about the Flying Start scholarship and all the people that have been through the program previously and how much it can help you. I knew my parents weren't strong into racing, there were no connections directly in racing and I probably needed to get out and about and get a lot more exposure and learn a lot more,” he said.

“All those jobs were working for the best and getting plenty of exposure and learning a lot, even building that CV to eventually get on the Flying Start. I knew that was going to send me in the right direction for the future.”

The Flying Start proved transformative, exposing Pollard to training methods across multiple jurisdictions.

“It's so different between Australia, America, Ireland, you couldn't go to each country and train exactly the same. You've got to adapt, but at the end of the day, it's all about getting the horse fit, but most importantly, happy and healthy and getting them to achieve the best results for their ability,” he said.

“I was lucky enough to do placements with some top trainers throughout, Phillip D’Amato in America, Bjorn Baker in Australia over here, in the UK Roger Varian. They're three really good trainers in their own jurisdictions, and you certainly learn a lot.”

Following the program, Pollard returned to New Zealand to work as racing manager for Stephen Marsh before making the move to Australia in early 2021 to join Annabel Neasham’s expanding operation. His arrival coincided with the emergence of champion import Zaaki (Leroidesanimaux), while Pollard went on to manage the stable’s Queensland base.

“Annabel started out in August 2020, and I joined the team in February 2021, so, five years ago she was still a small enough stable then but had the quality there already. She has really built the stable up and obviously in three different states she's got stables,” he said.

“Having the role with Annabel, when you go out on your own, you've had that exposure and you've made your mistakes because you've run your own stable already and then now's your time to put your own name to the stable.”

Now preparing to launch independently from Eagle Farm, Pollard is focused on building numbers and establishing his brand.

“There's always been people that have said they will support you along the way, but I suppose now's the time to see what happens… I've got boxes to fill and hopefully over the next few weeks between Magic Millions and Karaka I can get around and see as many people as possible,” he said.

Pollard was en route to the Gold Coast when speaking to ANZ News and is looking to secure his first runners through the Magic Millions and upcoming online sales.

“I'm realistic. It's a bit of a case of testing the waters and hopefully finding something of good value… I need the runners at the races quick enough, and the tried horses will be mainly where it's at, but I also want to be getting a bit of blood into the stable. I think Queensland is a great place to train two-year-olds. Warm weather, you get them up and going early and I think they can produce pretty good two-year-olds up here as well,” he said.

With long-term ambitions firmly in place, Pollard is under no illusion about the challenge ahead.

“I'm realistic that it's a hard competitive game, but it's something that I'm very dedicated to, and I'm extremely competitive as well. I certainly wouldn't be wanting to become a horse trainer to just be a number. I want to be one of the best that I possibly can be. Obviously results and success over the next 12 months, two years, five years will set you up for which way you're gonna go, and hopefully that's towards the top.”

Inhabit ready to show more in Gold Pearl

As the business end of the summer carnival begins on the Gold Coast, trainer Michael Hickmott is expecting a much-improved showing from Inhabit (Stay Inside) when the filly steps out in Saturday’s Gold Pearl QTIS 2YO Fillies (1100m). A debut winner over 900 metres at Murray Bridge in October, the daughter of Stay Inside (Extreme Choice) disappointed last start when finishing a distant third at Morphettville as a $1.26 favourite behind subsequent dual winner Moana Spirit (Tagaloa). Hickmott, however, is prepared to draw a line through the run after the filly was found to have suffered cardiac arrhythmia. Since then, Inhabit has returned to the trials in strong fashion. "She had a jump-out against the older horses and was completely dominant," Hickmott said while inspecting yearlings ahead of next week’s Magic Millions Sale. "Her last run was basically a no race for us. I'm not paying any attention to it. The figures that we use indicate that if she would have replicated her first start at her second and even improved slightly, she can be in the mix with these horses this time." Inhabit is rated a $11 chance, with the Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott-trained duo By Choice (Written By) and Shiki (Too Darn Hot) heading the market at under $4. Regular rider Todd Pannell retains the mount.

Heinrich hoping Pasima can shine on the Coast

Gillian Heinrich will saddle up the progressive Pasima (Pierro) in Saturday’s $500,000 The Wave (1800m) at the Gold Coast. Alongside training partner Ben Rodgers, Heinrich has already experienced the thrill of Magic Millions success when Military Rose (General Nediym) captured the Magic Millions 2YO Classic (RL, 1200m) in 2010. Five years later, she was diagnosed with bowel cancer, but following surgery and treatment in Germany was declared cancer-free in August that year. She then faced a lung tumour two years later. She again overcame that setback before a third diagnosis involving her lymph nodes emerged. A further trip to Germany for treatment again delivered positive news. Throughout those challenges Heinrich leaned heavily on Rodgers, who stepped in to manage the stable and later became training partner. “I’ve worked with Ben for around 12 years,” Heinrich told Racing.com. “He started as my foreman and took over after I was diagnosed with cancer the first time. I’m 65 now and he’ll eventually take over training the stable when I retire.” Pasima was purchased online by Heinrich and is raced in partnership with her daughter Tayla. Previously trained by Ciaron Maher and David Eustace, the five-year-old is now in his second preparation with Heinrich and Rodgers and arrives in peak form after four consecutive wins. “He can’t do much more than he has this campaign and we’re hoping he’s up to it for The Wave,” Heinrich said. “He’s a bull and has taken every step so far.” With Michael Rodd retaining the ride, Heinrich hopes a strong showing on Saturday can open the door to black-type options later in the year. “This will be his last run before he goes out for a break,” she said. “If he goes well, we’re keen to look at some better races…he’s a stud proposition.”

Touchdown chasing fourth straight win

Touchdown (Credit: Grant Courtney)

Lindsay Park’s emerging gelding Touchdown (Almanzor) will chase a fourth consecutive victory when he lines up as an odds-on favourite in Saturday’s $130,000 Honouring Our Jockeys Plate (2000m) at Flemington. The four-year-old will be having his first start at 2000 metres after completing a winning hat-trick at Caulfield Heath. “A good name and a picket fence often gets you a cult following,” co-trainer Will Hayes said. “He's very well-liked by the punters and he's an incredibly consistent galloper. This preparation, you could mount a case that he should be unbeaten, so he's very consistent and looks to be quite progressive.” Touchdown began his career in New Zealand after failing to reach his $100,000 reserve at the 2023 Inglis Easter Yearling Sale, before a Taupo trial win in late 2024 prompted Lindsay Park clients to secure the gelding. Touchdown broke his maiden first-up last spring and, following an unlucky second at Ballarat, has gone on to win his past three starts. Although he has been in work since mid-2025, Hayes said the gelding was thriving. “He thrives at the property at Euroa, he's a country boy, and he just gets out in the water walker and the day paddock,” he said. “He's maintained a very long preparation and he's still bucking his brands off.” Luke Currie returns to the saddle from barrier six in the ten-horse field.

Owner explains Jokers Grin move

The decision for Jokers Grin (Maschino) to join the stable of champion trainer Chris Waller has been confirmed, with connections already turning their attention to expanded weight-for-age opportunities in the eastern states for the gelding. The Western Australian sprint star, who stunned the market when winning last year’s $5 million The Quokka (1200m) at $21, will relocate east having finished a solid fifth in the Winterbottom Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) on his most recent start. Owner Mark Jones said the move had been in the planning for some time, with Jokers Grin’s rapid rise leaving limited suitable options in his home state. “It was probably 12 months ago that we figured he was going to be weighted out of WA racing,” Jones told SENTrack. “There are a limited number of races over here, for him.” Jones was keen to reiterate that the transfer is purely about broadening the gelding’s racing program and not a reflection on the work of long-time trainer Bernie Miller. “I must reiterate – we haven’t moved the horse because we aren’t happy with Bernie,” Jones said. “He did an amazing job with the horse. It’s just the opportunity for the horse.”

Traffic Warden brother to step out at Pakenham

Exploit (Street Boss), the Chris Waller-trained brother to dual Group 2 winner and emerging stallion Traffic Warden (Street Boss), is set to make his racetrack debut on a card headlined by the return of the $900,000 Ladbrokes Future Stars Series (1000m) at Southside Pakenham on Friday night. Bred and raced by Godolphin, Exploit will be partnered by Ben Melham. While early markets have him at double-figure odds, the colt has already created a positive impression behind the scenes. He turned heads in a recent Flemington jump-out when finishing off stylishly under minimal pressure behind Geelong Diamond (1100m) winner Moana Spirit. Exploit’s debut comes on a night that again showcases the strength of the Future Stars Series, which has quickly become one of Victoria’s most productive platforms for emerging talent. In just three years, the series has produced eight subsequent stakes winners, underlining its growing importance on the calendar. Among its most notable graduates is Gringotts (Per Incanto), who has gone on to earn more than $6 million since winning a heat in 2023. The opening heat of the series, a 1200-metre event for three-year-olds, shapes as a strong contest, led by Greg Eurell-trained Cyber Link (Bivouac).

Zahra mulls Wyong debut with Princess Que

Princess Que (Credit: Racing Photos)

Simon Zahra will weigh his options with Princess Que (Toronado), who could become his first runner at Wyong in Saturday’s $160,000 Central Coast Community News BM78 Handicap (1200m). The mare would contest the 1200-metre event, now Race 5 at 1.10pm, after Racing NSW brought the card forward due to predicted hot weather. “I'll have a good think about it, but [we'll] probably (run) because there's just no races for her down here,” Zahra said. “We've had a couple of goes up the straight and she hasn't been great at it, but she's quite good around a bend and Wyong is a tight sort of track that probably suits her style of racing.” Zahra has had just three runners in NSW since going solo over four years ago. The quirky Wyong layout appealed for Princess Que, a daughter of Toronado (High Chaparral) with 10 starts for three wins and three minor placings, and Zahra is encouraged by how she has handled clockwise work. “It's always hard for us to go there and get on that leg, but we've had a couple of goes at it in trackwork and she seems OK on it,” he said. “She's trialled up well – her barrier trials have been very, very good – and she's very good early on in her preparations. She's going there with a lot of ticks, she's just got to get on that leg and if she does that she should be competitive."

Toffee Tongue son strikes on debut

A sister to Hong Kong Horse of the Year and triple Group 1 winner Werther (Tavistock), Toffee Tongue more than held her own on the racetrack, and the Group 1 winner got off to a flying start as a broodmare when her first foal Heironaut (King’s Legacy) made a winning debut at Sale on Thursday. Prepared by Anthony Freedman and Sam Freedman, Heironaut was sent straight to a 1400-metre maiden for his first start. Ridden positively by Teo Nugent, the gelding took up the running early, travelled comfortably and proved too strong late, scoring by almost two lengths. A $350,000 Magic Millions purchase from Bhima Thoroughbreds for Anthony Freedman and Suman Hedge Bloodstock, Heironaut races in a syndicate that includes breeder Jonathan Munz, who also raced Toffee Tongue after securing her for $500,000 from Karaka Book 1 in 2018. Winner of the 2020 SAJC Oaks (Gr 1, 2000m), Toffee Tongue also placed at the highest level on multiple occasions, finishing runner-up in the Australian Oaks (Gr 1, 2400m), Turnbull Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m) and Doomben Cup (Gr 1, 2000m). The mare has already made a significant impression at stud, with Bhima Thoroughbreds also selling her son of Snitzel (Redoute's Choice) at last year’s Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale to David Ellis and Te Akau Racing for $625,000. She also has a yearling filly by Maurice (Screen Hero). Heironaut’s success marked the 18th Australian winner this season for King’s Legacy (Redoute's Choice), drawing him level with Farnan (Not A Single Doubt) and Bivouac (Exceed And Excel) as leading second-crop sires by winners.

Missapprehend breaks through at Sandown

It took a little longer than anticipated, but Missapprehend (Wootton Bassett) delivered on early promise when breaking her maiden with authority at Sandown on Thursday. The Ciaron Maher-trained filly made light work of the $55,000 Sportsbet Race Previews Plate (1400m), bouncing back from two unplaced runs in provincial maidens to score a soft metropolitan victory at her third career start. Ridden by Ethan Brown, Missapprehend enjoyed a smooth run in transit and was angled back to the inside early in the straight, where she quickened decisively to score by a length over Miss Miranda (Written Tycoon). A $600,000 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale purchase, the daughter of Wootton Bassett (Iffraaj) is out of a sister to Group 2 winner Passive Aggressive (Fastnet Rock) and Maher’s assistant trainer Jack Turnbull admitted there was a sense of relief in the camp after the filly finally put it all together. "She's always showed promise and we were a bit disappointed in her first couple that she'd been beaten, because we really thought she'd start her career pretty dominantly," Turnbull said. "But, third start, a metro maiden [win], it all adds up. She was an expensive Magic Millions purchase who we are sure will go on with. She's got a bit of quality.”

Sanniya oozes class at Devonport

Barry Campbell’s exciting filly Sanniya (Stratosphere) stamped herself as one of Tasmania’s most promising sprinters with a dominant performance in Wednesday’s 1009-metre Devonport Carpet Charge. Ridden by record Devonport Cup (1880m) winner Craig Newitt, the daughter of local stallion Stratosphere (Snitzel) never gave her rivals a look-in, leading throughout and accelerating away to score by seven lengths. Already a Listed winner at her second start, Sanniya was taking on older, more seasoned sprinters for the first time, but the class gap was evident as the now four-time winner cruised on the synthetic surface before being eased down over the final 100 metres of the $109,000 contest. “Baz [Barry Campbell] has placed this filly very, very well – he could have easily stayed against her own age, but he was able to throw her in the deep end,” Newitt said. “Obviously, it’s an advantage being on your home track, but she’s just made a small, but very quality field look very average. Once I crossed and hadn’t done much work early, it was game set and match… I don’t know how good she is.” Sanniya’s likely next assignments are the $50,000 Lady Lynette (1100m) and the Mystic Journey Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m), both to be run at Launceston over the coming month. Newitt said the way the filly is now settling in her races suggests she can handle the rise in distance. “Her two-year-old days, she really wanted to get it over and done with, but now she’s relaxing really well in front and showing good acceleration,” he said. “The 1100 metres of the Lady Lynette, good luck trying to catch her there, and hopefully she’s physically strong enough for the 1200 metres. If she is, good luck beating her there.”

Say Satono earns a crack at black-type

Well-related mare Say Satono (Satono Aladdin) has earned a crack at black-type following her victory in the Reefton Cup (1400m) on Wednesday. Given an economical run throughout, the mare was presented perfectly at the top of the home straight by jockey Tina Comignaghi and went on to score a 0.8-length victory over dual stakes winner Illicit Dreams (Vancouver), with a further 2.3 lengths back to Zoulander (Zoustar) in third. “It was a good win, she is a pretty handy mare. It was a pretty handy field too, so I was very happy,” trainer Andrew Carston said. The victory continued a solid form line for the six-year-old, who is on lease from breeder Rich Hill Stud, and Carston will now give Say Satono her first crack at black-type in next month’s Hazlett Stakes (Listed, 1400m) at Wingatui. “This is our last year for the lease and I think she deserves a chance at black-type,” Carston said. She is well-bred and well-related - she is a half to She’s A Dealer and out of a Group 1-winning mare ([Say No More]. “She is pretty valuable and Rich Hill have retained a share in the ownership. She has been a very handy mare and if she can get some black-type it would be icing on the cake.”

Super Photon bounces back at Tauranga

Former classy youngster Super Photon (Super Seth) returned to winning form at Tauranga on Thursday, signalling a possible resurgence after accounting for a strong field in the Dane Crockford Ray White Greerton 1500 (1500m).The four-year-old showed plenty of promise early in his career, winning both starts as a juvenile, highlighted by a Listed victory over 1400 metres. He continued to progress at three with two further wins before undergoing a wind operation late last season. That procedure appeared to take time to have effect, with Super Photon failing to fire in his first three runs this term. After finishing last twice and then fifth at Taupo last month, he was easy in the betting on Thursday, drifting to $10.80 in the seven-horse field. Trainer Stephen Marsh was keen to see the gelding relax during the run and turned to jockey Sam Weatherley to execute that plan. Settling three back on the rail, Super Photon travelled comfortably before improving into the one-one turning for home. When an inside run closed, Weatherley shifted wider and Super Photon responded with a sharp turn of foot to reel in race favourite Dealt With (Ace High) and score by a neck. “I was starting to scratch my head a little bit,” Marsh said. “He had been drawing well, he just hadn’t been settling. I said to Sam, ‘I don’t care where you are in the running, as long as he is relaxed’. He paraded the best I’ve seen him and really showed his turn of foot again. It was a nice field, so I’m very happy.” Marsh said the win puts Super Photon back on track and has opened the door to feature mile races, including a potential tilt at the Aotearoa Classic (Gr 3, 1600m) at Ellerslie on Karaka Millions night. “He might have just put his hand up,” he said.

Damian Lane Karaka Millions bound

Damian Lane will make the trip to New Zealand later this month after securing a strong book of rides for the Karaka Millions meeting. The leading Australian jockey is booked to partner Torture (Sword Of State) for Lindsay Park in the Karaka Millions 2YO (RL, 1200m) at Ellerslie on January 24, one of the centrepieces of the summer carnival. Lane has also been engaged to ride Espionage (Zoustar) in the Sistema Railway (Gr 1, 1200m) for trainers Mark Walker and Sam Bergerson. Espionage will be a familiar name to Australian racing fans, having previously raced in the care of Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott. The son of Zoustar (Northern Meteor) was last seen in Australia when finishing fifth behind Autumn Glow (The Autumn Sun) in the Theo Marks Stakes (Gr 2, 1300m) in September, before making his New Zealand debut where he finished third. Lane’s Ellerslie commitments also include Checkmate (Mongolian Khan) in the Aotearoa Classic (Gr 3, 1600m) and To Cap It All (Capitalist) in the Almanzor Trophy (Gr 3, 1200m).

Ho treble fuels Fownes' HK title surge

Four-time champion Caspar Fownes reclaimed the lead in the 2025/26 Hong Kong trainers’ championship after a pivotal double at Happy Valley on Wednesday night, while long-time ally Vincent Ho stole the spotlight with a riding treble. Fownes struck with Love Together (Capitalist) and Perfect General (Zoustar), both ridden by Ho, to edge back ahead of Mark Newnham in a tight premiership race. The stable now sits on 29 wins for the season, narrowly ahead of Newnham (28), Danny Shum (25) and David Hayes (24), while the victories took Fownes’ career tally to 1,195. Ho, who served his apprenticeship under Fownes, also saluted aboard Jolly Companion (All Too Hard) for Manfred Man, bringing up his first treble of the season and lifting his total to 18 wins. He now sits fourth on the jockeys’ table behind Zac Purton, Hugh Bowman and Luke Ferraris. Hong Kong racing resumes at Sha Tin on Sunday.

Sarti

Sarti (Credit: Race Images)

Horse Name (country)

Xyo: (dob)

Trainer: Ken and Bev Kelso

Owner: Sir Peter Vela

Sire: Snitzel

Dam: Guiseppina

Dam's Sire: Johar

Breeder: Pencarrow Thoroughbreds

Regally-bred gelding Sarti (Snitzel) made the perfect start to his career when winning impressively on debut at Tauranga on Thursday.

A son of the late four-time champion sire Snitzel (Redoute’s Choice) and Group 1-winning Johar (Gone West) mare Guiseppina, Sarti is a half-brother to Group 3 winner Tavi Time (Tavistock) and was bred by his owner Sir Peter Vela under his Pencarrow Thoroughbreds banner.

Trained by Ken and Bev Kelso, the four-year-old had three trials prior to his debut, with his latest being a winning performance over 800 metres at Pukekohe last month.

Despite his breeding and promise, there was greater fervour surrounding fellow debutant Pilates (Savabeel) in the 1200-metre maiden contest, with the filly backed into a $1.40 favourite on the back of two trial victories late last year.

From his outside draw, jockey Vinnie Colgan took Sarti straight back to settle at the rear of the field. Turning for home, the gelding unleashed a good turn of foot to run over the top of his rivals and win by a length over Deep Pursuit (Deep Field), with a further length back to Pilates in third.

“He drew a bit niggly and we elected to go back,” Colgan said. “We were going to be happy with him punching through the line, and he did a bit more than that, so it was pretty impressive.”

Ken Kelso was also impressed with Sarti’s debut performance.

“I wouldn’t say it is a surprise. His trials have been okay, but trials are trials,” he said. “We have just had to wait for him, he is a big, lean machine and has taken time, but he has always shown ability.

“I told Vinnie to let him find his feet, get him balanced up and hopefully he can find the line, and that is what he did.”

Kelso has tasted plenty of success with horses he has trained for Sir Peter Vela, most recently Group 1 performer Supera (Savabeel), and he is hoping Sarti can reach similar heights.

“We have had a lot of luck for Sir Peter and it is good to get another one,” Kelso said. “Hopefully he can go on and be as good as some of the others.”

While he holds high hopes for Sarti, Kelso said he will continue his patient approach.

“He is a four-year-old and a gelding, so we will just take our time with him and he will go through the grades,” he said. “Hopefully he will keep developing as we go along.”

Pencarrow Stud will offer the current yearling from Guiseppina, a colt by U S Navy Flag (War Front) at Karaka Book 1 as Lot 465.
