Balius Farm prepare for first ever Magic Millions draft

Trevor Marshallsea

ANZ News

Balius Farm

There’s a new face on the block at Magic Millions Gold Coast this year, with Victorian boutique stud Balius Farm stepping up to present their own draft at the sale for the first time.

Founded in 2014 by Tam Dieu and his wife Jacqui Sushames, Balius has been a familiar name for several years at a yearling auction closer to home in Inglis Premier.

What's On

But while the west Gippsland operation has also previously sold horses at the Gold Coast through the drafts of their good friends at another boutique farm, the Hunter Valley’s Meredith Park, this year they’ve bitten the bullet to present a draft under their own steam.

“We’re a small, boutique place. We initially bred to race but in the last five or so years we thought we’d take it more seriously, try to be more commercial, and hopefully it can pay its own way,” Dieu told ANZ News.

“We’ve got about 20 mares, and we’re slowly upgrading or reducing numbers - because they eat too much. But whenever we can afford it, we’ll pick up a good broodmare and try to send it to a good stallion, and that’s the recipe for longevity.

“This year, we thought we’d try to get our brand out there a bit more, and get a bit more recognised and more exposed, so we’d have our own draft at Magics.

“Jacqui thought she'd been doing it long enough to do a yearling prep herself and be a bit more hands on. It’s harder work having your own draft, but also, as a smaller farm, we don’t have the logistics to do a big yearling prep at the one time.

“We’ve got a draft going to the Premier sale in March, so we thought we’d prep a few to take the Gold Coast now. Our Gold Coast yearlings are the most precocious ones we have, so they go to the earlier sale.

“It’s a big logistics challenge. We need staff at the sale and some staff to stay at the farm and run things, but I think it’s worth doing. We get to look after our own horses - though I should say Meredith Park always did a fantastic job for us - but also it was just a case of us growing up as a farm and having enough horses to make our own draft.”

Balius - named with fitting aspiration after one of the two immortal horses of Greek mythology hero Achilles - will offer three fillies bred by the farm. They were driven from the stud, near Pakenham, by Sushames, in the couple’s six-horse float, with an overnight stopover at Meredith Park.

While their filly by Farnan (Not A Single Doubt) had to be redirected to Melbourne Premier’s supplementary list after striking herself while running, Dieu and Sushames are effusive about the remaining trio who, evenly spaced in the catalogue, will go on offer on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.

The first, Lot 363, is from the second crop of Coolmore sire Acrobat (Fastnet Rock), who’s had a winner among his first six runners in Acrodance, a filly who scored on debut at the Sunshine Coast in November as a $1.55 favourite.

Lot 363 is out of I Am Gypsy (I Am Invincible), a city winner of six races up to 1050 metres, who Balius bought at the 2020 Inglis Chairman’s Sale for $130,000, and who’s had three winners from four runners.

Five months after her purchase, I Am Gypsy threw Andouillette (Russian Revolution), who won four of his first five starts for Balius under Anthony and Sam Freedman, including at Moonee Valley. He then went, as Candlelight Dinner, to Hong Kong, where he’s won twice more so far.

“She’s good-sized, athletic and correct,” Dieu said of the filly, who has Stravinsky (Nureyev) doubled as the damsire of her father and mother.

“The mare has done a good job. She was a fast and precocious mare when she was racing, mostly in city class.

“The cross is Fastnet Rock over I Am Invincible and Stravinsky, which should work really well, and we think Acrobat will make a good stallion.”

Lot 646: Wootton Bassett ex Our Fraulein filly (Credit: Magic Millions)

Lot 646 is the product of some concerted investment, a filly by Wootton Bassett (Iffraaj) out of two-time winner Our Fraulein (Snitzel). She’s a daughter of dual stakes victor Miss Stellabelle (Dehere), who in turn is a three-quarter sister to six-time stakes-winning sprinter Here De Angels (Dehere).

Balius bought the mare, in-foal to Ole Kirk (Written Tycoon), through bloodstock agent Sheamus Mills from the Gold Coast National Broodmare Sale for $210,000, with the resultant Ole Kirk filly fetching $150,000 at Premier last year. They sent Our Fraulein to Coolmore’s much vaunted - and now deceased - shuttler Wootton Bassett, then standing his third Australian season at $93,500 (inc GST).

“She’s very well bred,” Dieu said of Lot 646. “Miss Stellabelle was a very good mare, and Our Fraulein was a young, gorgeous Snitzel mare picked out for us by Sheamus Mills, who’s a very good judge.

“Everyone knows Wootton Bassett as a well-proven sire, and I think the cross with Snitzel should work well. The filly should be a fast, early goer.

“She’s nice, compact and correct. She’s not as big as the other two in our draft, but she’s a good mover, with a big long stride on her.

“She’ll certainly be precocious. We like her. We’d certainly like to race her but we can’t race them all.”

Lot 768 taps into the valuable blood of Extreme Choice (Not A Single Doubt) without the rarified service fee, being from the second crop of one of his few sons at stud in Extreme Warrior.

Rosemont Stud’s imposing-looking $13,200 (inc GST) stallion, a winner at Group 3 and Listed level, has made a promising start with his first progeny hitting the track, with two winners from six runners. One is a stakes victor in Eternal Warrior, winner of the MRC Merson Cooper Stakes (Listed, 1000m) at his only start to date, the other an Adelaide city winner in Blandford Baron.

Lot 768: Extreme Warrior ex Sardaaj filly (Credit: Magic Millions)

Furthermore, this filly’s female family brings in one of Extreme Choice’s finest in the similarly bred Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) hero Knight’s Choice. He’s out of a granddaughter of this filly’s third dam.

There’s also class from the filly’s New Zealand mother Sardaaj (Iffraaj), a dual winner boasting an elite-level second in the Levin Classic (Gr 1, 1600m), and in a Group 2.

“Sardaaj was a good racetrack performer, and Iffraaj is an exceptional broodmare sire,” Dieu said.

“Extreme Warrior is going great. He’ll hopefully end up like Extreme Choice. He’s got a stakes winner and a city winner, so they’re precocious and fast.

“Hopefully this filly will be the same. She’s a very good size for an Extreme Choice line horse, and moves well for a big horse. She’s got all the attributes to sell well - a hot stallion, a good page, and she’s even got Knight’s Choice on her page, who’s similarly bred.

“Plus there’s the rarity factor. There’s only a few Extreme Warriors for sale, and only two at the Magics.”

We’re quietly confident. Our three fillies are healthy and well prepared, they’re looking good, so hopefully they’ll sell well

Tam Dieu

Sushames reports early interest has been encouraging for Balius Farm’s first Magic Millions draft in their own name.

“Things are going well,” she said. “It was a long trip, but the horses travelled really well. And we’ve had a good amount of interest in our three, so we’re looking forward to it.”

“We’re quietly confident,” said Dieu, who’ll join his wife on the Gold Coast on Monday. “Our three fillies are healthy and well prepared, they’re looking good, so hopefully they’ll sell well.”

Morning Briefing

Australia

Lindsay Park lose seven horses to bushfires

Lindsay Park has unfortunately announced the death of seven horses on Saturday night after its Euroa-based property was devastated by the Longwood bushfire.

Sophie Steel, the general manager of Lindsay Park, revealed that 128 horses had been transferred from the property to the Inglis Oaklands Junction complex, but that significant damage was caused.

“Eight per cent of the property is irrigated and that eight per cent is still standing,” Steel told Racing.com.

“The irrigated areas are all our key infrastructure and tracks; everything else is gone. Sadly, I can report we’ve lost seven horses. Five of those are racehorses, two of them are retirees. We had 30 retirees on the farm, the rest of which are being stabled here at Inglis and cared for. There are 320 horses that are safe.

“When our fire plan was enacted, the focus was solely on saving horses, and we were able to save 320 of them. It was quite emotional for us watching float after float of all our competitors come to pick up and evacuate our horses here.

“We’ve seen the worst of mother nature in the last three days and the best of humanity. Our community, there is nothing like it. We’re very grateful.

“At the moment, our priority continues to be the safety of our horses and our people. Our horses are safe; they continue to be fed and watered. It is not yet safe for our people to return to the farm for normal work, but as soon as it’s safe to do so, we’ll get back to normality as quickly as possible.”

Racing Victoria’s (RV) executive general manager of integrity services, Jamie Stier, extended sympathies on behalf of RV and issued an update on the current situation.

“It’s saddening to hear that seven horses have lost their lives,” Stier said. “They’re the only loss of life we’ve been made aware of. All the people associated with the equine facilities, there’s been no injuries sustained that we’ve been made aware of, that’s pleasing.

“Overnight, the fire situation has stabilised. There are still areas of concern, people shouldn’t downplay the significance of what’s still occurring around the state, particularly around the Longwood area. Overnight, there were concerns around Colac, that seems to have stabilised.

“Overall, the situation hasn’t worsened overnight but still we emphasize to people that they should remain vigilant, ensure their own safety, ensure the safety of those around them, listen to the emergency services, follow the orders that they have. Don’t try to re-enter properties or facilities until it’s clear to do so and protect themselves and their animals around them.”

Team Munce set for big Magic Millions day

Father-and-son trainers Chris and Corey Munce are gearing up for a big weekend as they send a trio of horses to Magic Millions Raceday on the Gold Coast. The Munces will have Zip Lock (Hellbent) contest the Magic Millions 2YO Classic (RL, 1200m) after his victory in the B.J. McLachlan Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) at Eagle Farm on December 27. The son of Hellbent (I Am Invincible) is joint-second favourite with recent Aquis Gold Pearl (1100m) winner Shiki (Too Darn Hot) at $7 for Saturday's race. "We brought him to the Gold Coast for a gallop on Saturday morning," Corey Munce said. "No land speed records were broken but the whole objective was for him to have a look at the track and imitate a race meeting so he passed with flying colours, pulled up very well and we're very happy with him. He's going to run a bold race." Meanwhile, Team Munce will be double-handed in the Magic Millions Fillies and Mares (1300m) with last-start Nudgee Stakes (Listed, 1300m) winner Lonhro's Queen (Lonhro) set to be joined in the field by yesterday's Magic Millions Rising Stars 3&4yo F\&M Plate (1300m) winner Poster Girl (Alabama Express). "Lonhro's Queen was originally heading out for a spell after her last run but being eligible for a wildcard entry into this race we're heading there," Corey said. "She’s been a revelation since coming here and has fitted into the Queensland lifestyle beautifully. There's nothing wrong with her and she pulled up well."

Group 1 autumn targets for Moody and Coleman fillies

Ole Dancer (Credit: Sportpix)

Pakenham-based trainers Peter Moody and Katherine Coleman have Group 1 targets for Ole Dancer (Ole Kirk) and Sheza Alibi (Saxon Warrior). The former, who provided Coleman with her first Group 1 win in Melbourne when taking out the Thousand Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m), could head for the Surround Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m), while Sheza Alibi, who landed the Vanity Stakes (Gr 3, 1400m) at Flemington before a dominant 5.8-length victory in the Sandown Guineas (Gr 2, 1600m), will be on a path towards the Australian Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m). "Both have come back in really good order," Coleman said. "They'll have their first jump out, not this Tuesday, but the following Tuesday, then probably a week in between. First jump out will just be soft. They won't be asked to do anything. They'll have another more serious one in either a week or a fortnight. I think we’ll try and split them, because Sheza Alibi had such a deep Spring, we'll probably look to keep her here in Victoria whereas Ole Dancer we'll likely take to Sydney. Both of them are really exciting, and the other filly who has come back really well is Alpha Sofie, she won the Atlantic Jewel at Moonee Valley. She's probably more of a short course, whereas the other two fillies will get a bit further, so it's very exciting."

Vale Ray Benson

Former race caller and well-known racing personality Ray Benson has died at the age of 84 after a battle with cancer. Benson called his first race at Sale in 1957 and finished race commentary in the 1980s, although he remained professionally involved in racing and had a role with Sky Channel as a mounting yard analyst. In 1972, Benson joined 3DB as their number two caller behind Bill Collins, a move that paved the way for then fledgling caller Bryan Martin to join the station, eventually becoming the number one caller for the station. “Ray was very diligent in his approach to race calling,” Martin told Racing.com. “He was a terrific form student, he had a great eye for detail, watching replays and assessing form, he could read a race very well. He was sort of a no fuss caller but was very precise, very clear and loved it, he loved the game. He had a dry sense of humour. He liked to have a bit of fun, particularly at the races, between races. You build up a camaraderie, you knew Ray was down in the end box, I’d be up in the next box and then Greg [Miles] would be in the box further down. For probably a good 30 years, Ray was always there on a Saturday, so we’d share a cup of tea between races, we’d share a joke, we’d share different comments after a race about what we might have seen, we’d compare notes."

Ammirati strengthens NZ Derby claims with easy Salver win

Ammirati (Credit: Race Images)

An unusual plan paid big dividends for the connections of Ammirati (3 c Savabeel - Happily by Pins) when the gelding confirmed New Zealand Derby (Gr 1, 2400m) plans with a dominant victory in the Gingernuts Salver (Listed, 2100m) at Ellerslie on Sunday. With more than a month between his win in the Wellington Stakes (Gr 3, 1600m) at Otaki in late November and a fifth placing in last week’s Levin Classic (Gr 2, 1400m) at Trentham, trainer Stephen Marsh decided on an eight-day back up for Ammirati’s first middle-distance test. That proved a masterstroke as the son of Savabeel (Zabeel) jumped best from the 2100-metre start point to make the early running and then track the leaders to the home turn. Regular jockey Matt Cartwright bided his time until asking Ammirati for his effort and he established a break on his rivals with 250 metres to run to still hold a margin of 0.8 lengths at the line. In a tight contest for the minor placings, Hastings visitor Tulsa King (Staphanos) took second by 0.1 lengths over Yamato Satona (Satono Aladdin). While Marsh was absent on sales duty at the Gold Coast, stable representative Dylan Johnson was happy to sing his employer’s praises for a plan that worked. “It’s always satisfying when a plan comes off, so you’ve got to hand it to Stephen, it was a good call,” Johnson said. “We’d been toying with whether he was a Kiwi or a Derby horse, but last week he said he would like to run him at Trentham and if he came through that okay then back him up here and get him over ground. He had an economical run at Trentham and he hit the line well, so it set up well and it was great to see it all fall into place. The beauty of today’s win is that you now know he’ll run a trip and we can pick a path to the Derby.”

Forsman double sets up return to Ellerslie for Karaka Millions

Brilliant wins at Ellerslie on Sunday by the Andrew Forsman-trained fillies Stromlinien (Almanzor) and Chilling Out (Savabeel) have set a platform for the Karaka Millions 2YO (RL, 1200m) and Karaka Millions 3YO (RL, 1600m) back at the Auckland track in two weeks’ time. A last-to-first finish in the opening race has all but secured a place in the Karaka Millions 2YO field for the previously unheralded filly Stromlinien. The $450,000 Karaka yearling purchase went into the 1200-metre race with a single trial placing back in September, but she put aside any supposed lack of experience with a professional performance to beat Singletary (Satono Aladdin) by 0.2 lengths. “The main reason she’s here today is because they didn’t include two-year-old heats in the trials at Tauranga on Tuesday,” Forsman said. “After what she’s just done though, the Karaka Millions seems obvious just so long as she comes through the race okay, but she’s tough and I would expect her to.” Last-start maiden winner Chilling Out also lodged her Karaka Millions claim with a similar effort to her younger stablemate as she beat Miss Ziggy (Brazen Beau) by 0.6 lengths in a 1500-metre event. “That was a smart effort, so we’ll have to think about coming back here for the big three-year-old mile,” said Forsman. "Going back to my time with Murray [Baker] we’ve had a number of good horses for David, but I think this filly might be the best of them. I thought she could win today and I also think she can win the Karaka Millions [3YO], so it’s pretty exciting to think we’ve now got what look like live chances in both races.”

US: WinStar Farm's champion sire Distorted Humor dies

Distorted Humor (Credit: WinStar Farm)

WinStar Farm's retired champion sire Distorted Humor (Forty Niner) was euthanised on Saturday aged 33 due to the infirmities of old age. A champion freshman sire, general sire, and broodmare sire, the son of Forty Niner (Mr Prospector) sired 174 black-type winners and 76 Graded scorers, among them Grade 1 winners Drosselmeyer, Funny Cide, Commentator, Any Given Saturday, Flower Alley, Hystericalady, Boisterous and Awesome Humor. Distorted Humor retired to stud in 1999 and he topped the first-season sires' list in 2002 before going on to be North America's leading general sire in 2011, the same year his son and leading earner Drosselmeyer captured the Breeders' Cup Classic (Gr 1, 10f) for WinStar. Drosselmeyer was also a Classic winner, having won the 2010 Belmont Stakes (Gr 1, 12f). In 2003, Distorted Humor's Funny Cide, bred by WinStar and campaigned by Sackatoga Stable, won the Kentucky Derby (Gr 1, 10f) and Preakness Stakes (Gr 1, 9.5f). As a broodmare sire, he was responsible for outstanding horses such as North America's all-time leading earner Arrogate (Unbridled’s Song), Hong Kong superstar Golden Sixty (Medaglia D’Oro) and Practical Joke (Into Mischief), as well as WinStar stallions Constitution (Tapit), Life Is Good (Into Mischief) and Patch Adams (Into Mischief). He was the leading broodmare sire of 2017. Distorted Humor was bred in Kentucky by Charles Nuckols Jr. and Sons and owned by R. L. Reineman and Prestonwood Farms. He captured the Commonwealth Breeders' Cup Stakes (Gr 2, 7f) at Keeneland in 1998, winning the Grade 2 in record-breaking time, as well as winning three other Graded contests.

‘I will run naked to Sydney and back if he’s not a good stallion!’ – rave reviews for Anamoe’s debut Gold Coast yearlings

James Thomas

ANZ News

Anamoe (Credit: Darley)

On paper, first-crop sire Anamoe (Street Boss) appears to have everything going for him. And, on the evidence of chat around the Magic Millions complex in the build up to this week’s Gold Coast Yearling Sale, plenty of noted judges expect the top-class colt to deliver on that considerable potential.

Godolphin’s homebred son of Street Boss (Street Cry) won nine Group 1 prizes during his time with James Cummings, scoring in elite company at two, three and four. He has, following withdrawals, 31 lots set to come under the hammer over the coming four sessions.

No one was more effusive in their praise than Peter O’Brien, general manager of Segenhoe Stud, who bullishly claimed: “I will literally run naked from here to Sydney and back if he’s not a good stallion!”

The Hunter Valley-based Segenhoe offers five lots by Anamoe, two colts and three fillies, including a half-sister to three-time Group 1 heroine Joliestar (Zoustar) (Lot 407).

Expanding on the traits being shown by Anamoe’s youngstock, O’Brien said: “Their minds are next level, they’re bombproof. The biggest issue we’ve had with our five here at Magics, we couldn’t exercise them enough – their constitutions are so good. The comparison for me, having had Danehills back in year one, they remind me of his stock. They’re great doers, great movers, and just have terrific constitutions. I just cannot see him not being a champion stallion.”

Anamoe retired to Darley’s Kelvinside operation in the afterglow of being crowned 2023’s Horse of The Year. His first crop was duly conceived at a fee of $121,000 (inc GST).

Anamoe Gold Coast Yearling Sale lots

His star-studded 149-strong debut book contained 74 per cent black-type performers, most notably ten individual Group 1 winners as well as the dams of a further eight elite-level scorers. Segenhoe was among the breeders who rowed in.

“We’ve sent 44 mares to him in his first three years, of which 14 were in year one,” said O’Brien. “So after seeing those 14 foals, we’ve basically sent 30 mares to him. I’m enamoured! I’ve never been as impressed with a young stallion’s stock as I have with his.”

O’Brien suggested that Anamoe’s race record “speaks for itself”, and said that his exploits on the track are more than backed up by his movement and strapping physique.

“He danced every dance as a racehorse and he’s a beautiful big scopey horse who’s all quality,” he said. “But the key for me is his action; he’s just a beautiful mover. We identified strong, short-coupled mares to go to him because he’s such a scopey horse, and every one of the foals we’ve had, including our five yearlings here, there’s only one out of about 25 that can’t walk. I’m a huge fan of him and we’ve got five here that are all well-bred, beautiful looking horses.”

O’Brien identified Lot 323, the filly out of the well-bred mare Goddess (Fastnet Rock), as being a particularly popular member of the stallion’s Magic Millions offering.

“The dam had Group 1 potential but she broke down in her only race, in which she started odds on,” he said. “She’s a really well-bred, good-looking mare and we’d kept the name Goddess for her for a reason. She’s a very strong, short-coupled Fastnet Rock mare, very much Danehill-esque, and we sent her to Anamoe to get a bit more scope and quality, which we got. This filly’s a queen and a lot of people think she’s one of the best fillies in the sale.”

Lot 323: Anamoe ex Goddess filly (Credit: Magic Millions)

With inspections on the Gold Coast reaching the business end, renowned judge Sheamus Mills was among the agents to give Anamoe’s progeny a firm thumbs up.

“You tend to get into these sorts of conversations around the bar or at dinner, and I think most people are finding horses they like by Anamoe,” he said. “Most people, whether they’re colt buyers or filly buyers, they’ve got one or two Anamoes on their list, from what I can tell. It’ll be interesting to see where people value them. Does he punch on with the big boys or is there some level of caution there?

“It’s hard for those first-season sires up against the proven horses. I think it’s been a while since we’ve had a first-season sire that can really compete at that level, probably back as far as Sepoy. Have we seen a better racehorse go to stud since then? He’s probably the best credentialed stallion we’ve seen at the sale yard since.”

Having been busy working his way through the Magic Millions catalogue, Mills echoed O’Brien’s observations about the qualities being shown by Anamoe’s offspring.

“He’s got a good spread between colts and fillies and they’re pretty much peas in a pod,” he said. “They’re well-grown horses so he obviously puts plenty of size and strength into the mare. Brain-wise I’d say they’re pretty cool customers. They parade well and show themselves, they do themselves a favour as far as sales horses go. Most of them move very well too.

“It’s going to be interesting to see what sort of horses he gets on the track. I wouldn’t have necessarily thought he’d get precocious stock, but they seem so collected that he may just surprise in that regard. From a racehorse point of view, he could do it himself. Now the question is: do his progeny do it all too? At this stage in the game all he can do is put some good sorts on the ground, and I think he’s certainly done that. I think he’ll be really well received.”

Lot 407: Anamoe ex Jolie Bay filly (Credit: Magic Millions)

Anamoe is, of course, a grandson of Street Cry (Machiavellian), who not only gave the world two superstar fillies in Winx and Zenyatta, but is having an increasing influence through the male line with sons such as Per Incanto and Pride Of Dubai figuring prominently in southern hemisphere stallion tables.

“I know the sireline very well,” said visiting agent Mark McStay. “It’s a long time ago now but I sold nominations to Street Cry before he ever had runners, and I worked in Dalham Hall when Machiavellian stood there, which is probably showing my age! Street Boss seems to be one of the sires from the Northern Hemisphere who’s done particularly well in Australia. They seem to have adapted to the environment down here and he was a good sire.”

McStay said Anamoe could well be the next name to prove the potency of this line.

“He seems to be getting nice horses and he won a Sires’ Produce as a two-year-old, which is a stallion making race,” he said. “He won two Guineas [Caulfield and Rosehill], a Cox Plate and was second in a Golden Slipper, so he ticks an awful lot of boxes.

“From what I’ve seen on the ground here, there’s plenty of them making my shortlist. I haven’t seen the horse himself in the flesh but he’s getting plenty of big, strong, correct horses with good outlooks that walk well. They look like good straightforward horses who’ll run. He’s getting nice individuals, which is encouraging, and they definitely look hardy.”

McStay added: “When I went to his consignment, Peter O’Brien was very high on the horse. Every day is a school day in this game, and when somebody like Peter tells you to pay attention to a stallion, that certainly made my ears prick up.”

The five-day Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale begins on Tuesday at 11am, with 1,221 lots catalogued across the five sessions.

Little Paradise, Invincible Ibis impress as Zac Purton slots five-timer at Sha Tin

Leo Schlink

Little Paradise (Toronado) and Invincible Ibis (Hellbent) remain locked on course for a Hong Kong Classic Mile (1600m) showdown on February 1 after the pair posted emphatic victories at Sha Tin on Sunday as Zac Purton dominated with five wins.

Little Paradise crowned Purton’s quintet and the eight-time champion Purton was effusive in his praise of the Toronado (High Chaparral) gelding after he earned a PPG bonus of HK$1 million (approx. AU$191,560) with victory in the Class 2 Racing Club Cup Handicap (1400m) for Jimmy Ting, defeating Infinite Resolve (Snitzel) and Mid Winter Wind (What A Winter) in 1m 20.84s.

“It was a really good effort. He’s progressive, a lovely horse to ride. He relaxes nicely. It was a good, strong field. He ran a good time, he did a good job,” said Purton, who has the choice of several Hong Kong Classic Mile rides, including Invincible Ibis and Beauty Bolt (Night Of Thunder).

Trainer Jimmy Ting is hopeful Purton will stay with Little Paradise in the Hong Kong Classic Mile after the classy four-year-old downed a string of older rivals.

“He's a very nice horse. After every race, he keeps improving. I've always thought the mile would be the horse's best distance. He has been a bit keen before but now he's much more calm,” Ting said.

Purton (59 wins) stretched his lead to 33 over Hugh Bowman (26) in a remarkable display of sustained excellence – and it could have been six wins had he not honoured a pledge to partner Beauty Bolt in the Class 3 (Restricted) Pak Shek Au Handicap (1600m), only to finish to second to another of his regular rides, Invincible Ibis, who was partnered by Bowman.

Bowman was impressed with Mark Newnham’s rising star Invincible Ibis, who weaved his way into clear running after dropping to the tail of the field before finishing powerfully to defeat Beauty Bolt by a neck in 1m 34.18s.

“Invincible Ibis was very straight forward. I didn’t expect to be so far back but I was reluctant to pressure him just to hold a position and he enjoyed being left alone,” Bowman said. “I was in a position – to avoid traffic – that I had to make a long run on him and he coped with that, too.

“And when I needed his effort at the 100 metres mark, he did it with consummate ease.”

Invincible Ibis (Credit: HKJC)

Newnham said: “He's putting up quite a good record now and the nice part about the race was when it got a bit tough and he had to stretch the last part to beat Beauty Bolt, he did. So, he's got good ability, but he's got a good heart.

“You can only keep winning and he's put four together now, so he goes there [Hong Kong Classic Mile] in good form.”

Newnham reclaimed top spot in the trainers’ championship from Caspar Fownes to lead with 30 wins to 29 when fellow four-year-old Lucky Sam Gor (Press Statement) defied his rivals to clinch the Class 3 Stanley Gap Handicap (1400m) under Matthew Poon.

Apart from Little Paradise, Purton also struck aboard Ricky Yiu’s Snowthorn (Hellbent) in the Class 5 Chek Keng Handicap (1200m), Pierre Ng’s Majestic Valour (Toronado) in the second section of the Class 4 Wu Kai Sha Handicap (1200m), Robot Star (Extreme Choice) for Manfred Man in the second section of the Class 4 Wu Kau Tang Handicap (1400m) and David Hayes’ China Win (Super Seth) in the Class 4 Hebe Haven Handicap (1800m).

“Robot Star was good, he probably wants further – seven furlongs was a bit sharp for him – and he was good through the line, he was unexposed,” Purton said.

“China Win, he’s not an easy horse to manage in the mornings – very, very difficult. The boys are doing a good job to manage him as well as they are and on a race day, he doesn’t know what he wants to do in a race. One day, he wants to scream long, the next day he wants to drop out.

“But when the penny drops, he’ll turn into a handy enough stayer. It was a good effort – he had the race run to suit.”

Money Catcher (Credit: HKJC)

Young Emperor (Holy Roman Emperor) saluted at 67/1 for David Eustace and Luke Ferraris in the Class 3 Hung Mui Kuk Handicap (1200m) before Money Catcher (Ferlax) turned back the clock for Frankie Lor and Derek Leung with his first win in three years with success in the Class 3 Pak Sha O Handicap (1800m).

Twice placed at Group 1 level, the eight-year-old finished third in the 2022 Hong Kong Cup (Gr 1, 2000m) behind Romantic Warrior (Acclamation) and Danon The Kid (Just A Way), but had not won since his January Cup Handicap (Gr 3, 1800m) victory at Happy Valley in 2023.

“It was worth the wait. When he came to Hong Kong, he kept placing and it was difficult to win. He won two races and after that, he was always close but did start to run some bad races and it allowed a drop down to Class 3,” Lor said.

“The pace was quick, so he could come from behind and win for his patient owner. I'm happy because he's an eight-year-old who can still win and it's great for the owner.”

Three-year-old Elite Golf (Frosted) impressively won the first section of the Class 4 Wu Kai Sha Handicap (1200m) under Harry Bentley for Chris So, while Rezeki (Ardrossan) notched his first win in Hong Kong for David Hall with success in the first section of the Class 4 Wu Kau Tang Handicap (1400m) under a perfect ride by Andrea Atzeni.

Hong Kong racing continues at Happy Valley on Wednesday with the running of the January Cup Handicap.
