Yulong Investments claimed the most sought after offering on day two of the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale when Zhang Yuesheng’s outfit bid $2,000,000 for a well-related son of sire sensation Extreme Choice (Not A Single Doubt).

That price equaled the figure Coolmore’s Tom Magnier paid for day one’s session-topping son of Frankel (Galileo).

Agent James Harron was consigned to the role of underbidder, while teams from Te Akau Racing and Newgate Farm were also involved in the protracted seven-figure tussle.

The colt, who was offered by Matthew Sandblom’s Kingstar Farm, is a sibling to three winners, most notably his sister Wollombi. The Yulong-owned daughter of Extreme Choice enjoyed her biggest result when landing the 2023 Vanity Stakes (Gr 3, 1400m).

“He’s one of the most special colts in the whole sale, especially today, and he’s the only target we definitely needed to buy,” said Jun Zhang, Yulong’s general manager.

“We can see some stallion potential in him, and we own the sister as well. She’s in foal to Diatonic, so we’re trying to create our own family. This is another reason why we had to get him. Extreme Choice is a very successful stallion and could be an important stallion in the future, which is why we are trying to get into the bloodline.”

What's On

Despite subfertility preventing Newgate’s Extreme Choice fielding big numbers, he has still punched out a high concentration of significant talents. He is the sire of six Group 1 winners, including Devil Night and Golden Slipper (Gr 1, 1200m) winner turned Newgate stallion Stay Inside, both of whom were bred by Kingstar Farm. His 25 black-type performers mean he is operating at an impressive stakes horses-to-runners ratio of 17 per cent.

Yulong are among those who have enjoyed elite-level success with the stallion as Devil Night claimed last year’s Blue Diamond Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) in the familiar green and white silks.

Devil Night was bought by Yulong for $1.4 million at the 2024 edition of the Gold Coast sale, Kingstar’s previous best result in a sales ring. Extreme Choice’s previous record was provided when Chris Waller, Guy Mulcaster and B2B Thoroughbreds paid $1.7 million for the brother to Group 1 winner Apocalyptic at last year’s Inglis Easter Yearling Sale.

“It’s very rewarding because a lot goes into getting this horse here,” said an emotional Adam Cook, manager of Kingstar Farm. “A lot has to go right, especially with a son of Extreme Choice. You’ve got to get the mare in foal, and then she’s got to have a nice foal. Fortunately all the stars and moons aligned with her and this horse got here safe and sound.

“It’s been a very nerve-wracking three months and the guys at the farm have made sure everything’s gone right to ease my nerves and stresses as such as they could. It’s been a rollercoaster of emotions getting this horse to here.”

Cook added: “It’s impossible to get a full-relation to a Group winner by Extreme Choice. He’s the best son of Extreme Choice that we’ve bred, and we bred Stay Inside and Devil Night. Although this fella might not be here for the Magic Millions [race meeting] this time next year, I can’t wait to see him as a later two-year-old. I think he’ll be an awesome three-year-old; he has strength, scope, and a beautiful stallion’s head. Everything was just right with him and I guess that’s reflected in the price.”

At the sale so far, 326 yearlings found a new home at clearance rate of 83 per cent. In turn, the aggregate stands at $93.975m (down 3.5 per cent year-on-year), the average price closed at $288,266 (up 4 per cent) while the median was identical to the same point in the sale 12 months ago at $200,000.

“A very, very strong day’s trade, I thought,” said Magic Millions managing director Barry Bowditch. “I thought it felt deep, genuine, diverse - and fun. There was a lot of vibe to it. It was what we like to create here at Magic Millions. It was a busy day, it had a bit of everything. All in all we’re delighted with how today went.

“There’s solid trade being done under the median, and that’s holding solid at $200,000. We’re thinking we’re tracking well through the middle market. The feel is that the sale continues to build momentum.”

Field returns to source of success

The first seven-figure transaction of the day came when Henry Field struck a bid of $1.5m for Milburn Creek’s Snitzel (Redoute’s Choice) colt out of Embrace Me (Shamexpess). The Newgate Farm managing director signed the ticket on behalf of a partnership that includes China Horse Club and Clarke Bloodstock.

The dam won the Typhoon Tracy Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m), while she is out of a half-sister to the New Zealand Derby (Gr 1, 2400m) scorer Military Move (Volksraad). The Newgate team already know plenty about the pedigree as they purchased this colt’s Zoustar (Northern Meteor) half-brother Ballpark, a maiden winner since the catalogue was released, for $800,000 in 2024.

“He’s a beautiful horse out of a fast mare raised on a great farm in Milburn Creek, and bred by a great breeder,” said Field. “We’ve had so much success buying Snitzel colts; the likes of Invader, Russian Revolution, In The Congo and Wild Ruler.

“For us, this was a pretty exceptional horse. You’ve got to buy what you love and we loved him, so let’s hope he’s a good horse for us. He’s very much in the mould of those good horses. He’s neat, sharp, has great strength, great power through his forearm and gaskins, and a great attitude.”

He added: “We’ve been together for ten years, we’ve produced 15 individual stallions, so it’s been an amazing partnership with China Horse Club and all our other partners. It’s lasted for so long and we’ve had so much success with this particular stallion. We thought this colt was a real standout so we’re really happy to get him.”

As well as stocking up the colts fund portfolio, Newgate was also busy on the selling front. By the close of trade, 20 yearlings had been sold for aggregate receipts of $6.545m and an average price of $327,250.

“We’re happy with what we’ve bought and we’ve sold every horse we’ve offered so far, which we’re really happy with,” said Field. “Hopefully we can get runners, whether they’re from the consignment or the ones we buy. We’ve had so much success from Magic Millions, both buying and selling. We’ve sold two champion two-year-olds out of this consignment and we’ve bought many, many good horses. It’s a great formula and they put a great show on. We’re pleased to be here.”

Coolmore spree continues

There was a second $1.5m son of Snitzel later in the day when Tom Magnier secured the colt out of French Listed winner Iffranesia (Iffraaj) from the Arrowfield draft. The colt is a sibling to three winners, not least his brother Beadman, who struck in the Ken Russell Memorial Classic (Gr 3, 1200m) for the China Horse Club and Newgate partnership.

Tom Magnier (Credit: Magic Millions)

As with Magnier’s other Magic Millions purchases, the seven-figure colt will head into training with Chris Waller, where he will come under the care of his sibling’s namesake, yard foreman and Hall of Famer Darren Beadman.

“He’s a nice horse and he’ll go to Chris, so Mr Beadman better make sure this is a good one as well!,” joked Magnier. “He’s a lovely colt and we’ve had a little bit of luck with Arrowfield before, obviously the Messaras know how to breed a good horse by Snitzel, and we’ve had luck with the stallion before with Shinzo and Switzerland.

“There’s a great group of people in our colts fund and they all loved the horse. He’s one of the best colts on the ground, we couldn’t be happier with the type. We think he’s a mature type and everybody on the team really liked him so fingers crossed.”

Arrowfield’s Paul Messara said: “It was a hard one to sell because I don’t think we’ve produced many horses as good as that in the past. He’s a brother to Beadman and we’re looking for another one. It’ll be a long time before we breed a horse as nice as that. Congratulations to the Coolmore team. They’ve bought a beautiful horse today.”

On the late Snitzel’s legacy, Messara added: “He’s a standout stallion. He’s gone now. He’s at the top of the tree and he keeps producing week in, week out. When you’ve got such a dominant horse like that, it’s hard to fill the hole. It’s a big gap. We’ve got The Autumn Sun coming through and hopefully he’s going to take up that mantle.”

The colt was Magnier’s third pickup of the day, following on from an $800,000 I Am Invincible (Invincible Spirit) brother to champion three-year-old filly In Secret from Segenhoe Stud, and a well-bred Wootton Bassett (Iffraaj) colt from Lime Country Thoroughbreds signed for alongside Charles Shanahan at $650,000.

“Very nice mover,” Magnier said after securing the $800,000 I Am Invincible colt. “Again, everybody liked him. He’s strong, hopefully he’s early. Obviously it’s a pedigree that everybody knows, but I’m very happy with him. We’ve got a colt by I Am Invincible before, so we’re effectively digging for gold where we found it before. He’s a nice horse. We love buying off Segenhoe and the main thing for us is that everybody on the team liked him.”

He added: “Chris has some of the family there that he likes, so if you can get anything close to In Secret, you’ll be doing well.”

Rising Sun get into current family

The day’s most expensive filly fetched $1.2m, with members of the Rising Sun Syndicate team sitting alongside Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott as the I Am Invincible filly out of the Group 3-placed Key (Exceed And Excel) passed through the ring.

The trainers know a bit about the pedigree behind the Kia Ora Stud-consigned youngster as the mare also bred I’m Ya Huckleberry (Home Affairs), who debuted for the stable with a runner-up finish in the Arrowfield Breeders’ Plate (Gr 3, 1000m) at Randwick in October.

“It’s a very current family, and a family with so much black-type depth,” said Bott. “It’s a family we know well as we’ve got the half-brother in training, who we have a very high opinion of having seen him on the racetrack on one occasion, that automatically attracted us to her. Physically, the way she presented at this sale really made her a must-have for us. We’re very fortunate we were able to partner up on this filly and we’re delighted we’re able to secure her.”

Lot 420: I Am Invincible ex Key filly (Credit: Magic Millions)

Rising Sun Syndicate’s Kosi Kawakami said: “We’re looking for the best filly we can get for our owner from Japan. We looked at this horse and fell in love with her, she’s the best. Obviously knowing her brother being trained by Gai and Adrian, they would be the best trainers to go for.”

He added: “We had to go hard because we had to secure her.”

Japanese interests are no stranger to the Gold Coast Yearling Sale, with trainer Mitsu Nakauchida securing last year’s top lot, the Home Affairs (I Am Invincible) filly out of Sunlight (Zoustar), at $3.2m.

Kawakami shared a Japanese perspective on the sale, saying: “The best of the best of Australian bloodstock is here. We had Mitsu Nakauchida here last year. We went to look at the Sunlight filly for him, which they obviously paid big, big money for. It’s big in Japan as well with people putting focus on this sale. We get a lot of buyers from Japan as well, and it’s an honour to be able to buy a million dollar filly from this catalogue.”

Harron snaps up ‘elastic’ Snitzel colt

The $1.2m mark was hit for a second time when James Harron, bidding with Tony Fung Investments (TFI), landed the Snitzel colt out of Coolmore Classic (Gr 1, 1500m) heroine Krone (Eurozone). The day’s fifth seven-figure lot was offered by Rosemont Stud.

“[He’s a] lovely colt,” said Harron. “He was one of our picks across the board with all the team, ourselves and TFI, everyone just loved him. He’s an athletic horse, Krone was obviously very successful on the track, a very sound, consistent mare, so he was a great package. We’re very happy to get him.”

The agent added: “I think he’ll be early. He’s just very light on his feet; he doesn’t carry a lot of excess, he’s very easy on himself, a real quality colt. He’s really elastic in how he moves and just how he gets about the ground, so I get the impression he’ll just skip across the ground and be one of those really athletic types of racehorses. He really caught the eye from the very beginning.”

Early action

The second session got off to a notably bright start with two of the first three lots bringing particularly punchy prices.

Peter Moody and Mick Malone teamed up to land the very first lot into the ring at $800,000. Arrowfield’s Snitzel filly had one of the more unusual pages in the catalogue being out of Delta Queen, a daughter of leading South African sire Var (Forest Wildcat).

This means the youngster is bred on the same cross as Newgate Farm’s first-crop stallion In The Congo, who got the better of Anamoe (Street Boss) to land the Golden Rose (Gr 1, 1400m) during his time in training.

Delta Queen won a Grade 3 in her native country and is out of the globetrotting River Jetez (Jet Master), who struck in the Met (Gr 1, 2000m) at Kenilworth and the Balanchine (Gr 2, 2000m) during her time with Mike de Kock. Not only did River Jetez win a Grade 1 herself, she also bred a Group 1 winner at paddocks, with Delta Queen’s sister Rivarine striking in the Computaform Sprint (Gr 1, 1000m).

“That’s a great way to start the day and, I don’t know if you can ever say you got a bit of value at that money, but we’ve loved her from the day we got here,” said Malone. “Me and Moods have had luck buying horses together, like Ole Dancer of late, so it’s good to team up again. He’s a champion and a great trainer. We’ll put a good group of clients together, myself and Pauline [Alix, wife] will stay in, and we’ll just enjoy her. She’s a beauty.

“We’ve had a bit of luck buying Snitzels over the years and they’re not making them any more. She’s off a great farm too in Arrowfield, we bought Snitzerland off them years ago. She reminded me of all those nice Snitzels we’ve seen in the past.

“She had that lovely big loose action on her – unbelievable temperament. I don’t know how many parades she would’ve had but she’d have been flat out. You try and replicate what you’ve bought that’s worked in the past and, to me, she had the exact same shape as has worked before. It’s those neater, sharp types where I feel you need to play.”

On the filly’s South African heritage, with the family also including a Horse of the Year in Pocket Power (Jet Master), Malone added: “That form holds up well here and it mixes well with our Australian pedigrees. I think Snitzel upgrades those mares so well too. It’s in the lap of the Gods now, but I think she has enough pedigree that when it’s all said and done, we’ll be able to breed out of her if she doesn’t live up to what we hope on the track. That’s what we’re trying to do when we spend that sort of money.”

Just two lots later, Te Akau Racing principal David Ellis went to $850,000 for the Extreme Choice filly out of Group 3 scorer Deroche (Needs Further). The October-foaled youngster was offered by Newgate Farm.

“I wrote in my book ‘Golden Slipper filly - just buy her,’” said Ellis. “I don’t put that very often! I thought she looks like a ready-made two-year-old but has the scope to be a nice three- and four-year-old. I probably paid an extra hundred [thousand] to what I thought she’d make, but with the good ones you’ve just got to buy them. Very happy.”

The Gold Coast Yearling Sale continues on Thursday at 10am local time.

Sale snippets

Lot 259: Extreme Choice ex Euroboss by Street Boss, filly

Price: $525,000

Buyer: Knine Inc/Rising Sun Syndicate

Vendor: Newgate Farm

“She’s obviously one of the best Extreme Choice fillies we saw in the whole catalogue and we loved her from first sight,” Kosi Kawakami said. “She’s got a beautiful walk, she’s strong, good bones, she ticks all the boxes and we really like her as a horse. I thought we’d go higher, so we’re very happy to secure her for this price. There’s not too many around so everybody wants them. It was a great buy, I thought.”

Lot 263: Zoustar ex Exo Lady by Exosphere, filly

Price: $650,000

Buyer: Waller Racing/Mulcaster Bloodstock

Vendor: Milburn Creek

“We saw her on the farm early, saw her again when she got here and I thought she’d just kept improving all the way through the preparation,” Mulcaster said. “She looked like a good Zoustar and obviously we had to pay for her but we had a fair bit of interest in her. We’re really happy to have got her.”

Lot 304: Zoustar ex Fuddle Dee Duddle by Red Ransom, filly

Price: $625,000

Buyer: James Harron Bloodstock/Michael Freedman Racing Filly Partnership/Tony Fung Fillies

Vendor: Longwood Thoroughbred Farm

“I’ve followed [the family] all very closely,” Harron said. “We tried to buy Brereton back in the day and she was the closest thing I’ve seen to him since. I thought she was beautifully put-together. Gorgeous head and a really strong-bodied filly, very powerful. I just loved her the minute she stepped out of the box. Really pleased to get her with TFI and Michael Freedman for our fillies partnership. Everyone came together and loved her so we’re very pleased to get her. We’ll find out what she wants to be but she looks very forward. They [Zoustars] tend to improve as they get a bit older but she is very forward, she’s got great strength, a great mind, was really focussed on her job the whole week, so who knows.”

Lot 362: Extreme Choice ex I Am A Star by I Am Invincible, filly

Price: $575,000

Buyer: Shane Nichols Racing

Vendor: Newgate Farm

“This is probably the first one that has looked like her mother,” said Nichols, who trained the filly’s dam, prolific Group winner I Am A Star, to ten wins including in the Empire Rose Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m). “I got some photos of I Am A Star as a yearning who was sold a month later and a month older and they are very similar. Slightly built but a good running type so we were happy to secure her. We’ve got a bit of her to still syndicate up so there are shares available and hopefully we’ll get that done fairly promptly. Nice to get another one from that mare. She has been good to us and I hope that she’ll continue to be so. I thought [the price] was the mark or maybe a bit more. In this market I think it was probably fair and reasonable. I probably was near the top of what I wanted to spend on her, give or take, but happy enough at this stage.”

Lot 387: Snitzel ex Intrepidacious by Shooting To Win, filly

Price: $650,000

Buyer: KPW Bloodstock

Vendor: Silverdale Farm

“You just have to look at her,” Kevin "Millie" Walls said. “She’s a quality filly. They were jumping around everywhere out there and she didn’t turn a hair. She’s been here for over a week at the sales and I’ve seen her about ten times. She never turned a hair, great walker, great constitution. We just buy on-type and then work out what we have to pay. We went one more [bid] but it was around the mark.”

Lot 410: Zoustar ex Julinka by Sebring, colt

Price: $625,000

Buyer: Hong Kong Jockey Club

Vendor: Westbury Stud Ltd

“We’ve had good luck buying these Zoustars for Hong Kong. This colt is really athletic, sound and light on his feet,” said Boomer Bloodstock’s Craig Rounsefell, southern hemisphere agent for the Hong Kong Jockey Club. “He’ll head to Limitless Lodge and in two years be offered at the Hong Kong International Sale at Sha Tin. He’s a quality colt from a very deep family. He is tailor made for what we are looking for. Zoustar is one of the leading stallions in Australia and he is an all-rounded horse. He vetted very cleanly and given the physical, there is always competition for those horses. We got the pointy end [price] and we were lucky it fell our way.”

Lot 434: Hellbent ex La Tigeresa by Street Cry, filly

Price: $600,000

Buyer: Michael Freedman Racing/AWB

Vendor: Widden Stud

“Hellbent is doing a super job, particularly with his fillies,” Michael Freedman said. “A really good job all round. She’s a [good] moving filly and looked quite sharp off a very good farm in Widden. I love buying off a good farm. On the price, he added: “We had to stretch a bit more as when you do all the groundwork and you like these sorts of horses, within reason you’ve got to make sure you don’t go home without them.”

Lot 442: Stay Inside ex Lady Lilly by Nyquist, filly

Price: $550,000

Buyer: Shane McGrath Bloodstock

Vendor: Newhaven Park

“We’re big fans of Stay Inside. We’ve loved all his horses here in catalogue and she was a filly we really honed in on,” Shane McGrath said. “He’s a stallion that has already done the job and he’s an up-and-comer with the shape and make of the stock by him. Newhaven is a great producing farm and she’s out of a Grade 1 [performing] American mare. We just loved her. She was Clint’s [Clinton McDonald] pick of the sale and a filly he wanted to hone in on. We were delighted to get her at that price because if someone else wanted to keep going we would have because we wouldn’t have gone home without her. Fast American mares work so well down here but for us and that sort of money, she’s got to go on and do the job. She looks like a two-year-old.”

Morning Briefing

Australia

11 for Time Test

Dad And Dave (3 g ex Nymenche by Rip Van Winkle) became the 11th individual stakes winner for former Little Avondale shuttler Time Test (Dubawi) when he landed Wednesday’s Launceston Guineas (Listed, 2000m) at Launceston. Making just his fourth career start, the Ciaron Maher-trained three-year-old gelding ran out a 1.3-length winner over Crack The Shutters (Alpine Eagle) with a further 2.2 lengths back to Wolf Junior (Alpine Eagle) in third. Purchased by his trainer for $55,000 out of Ohukia Lodge at the 2024 NZB Ready To Run Sale, Dad And Dave is the first and only foal to race out of the Rip Van Winkle (Galileo) mare Nymenche.

Ciaron Maher will throw two darts at Saturday's Magic Millions 2YO Classic (RL, 1200m) at the Gold Coast, with the trainer optimistic he can land the race for a third time. Maher, who won the lucrative race in 2020 with Away Game (Snitzel) and again in 2022 with Coolangatta (Written Tycoon), will have Tornado Valley (Too Darn Hot) and Unit Five (Supido) in the contest this time around. The former was last seen running second behind Zip Lock (Hellbent) in the B.J. McLachlan Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) last month, while Unit Five was an impressive winner on debut at Caulfield on December 20. "I'm very happy with his preparation, it was the plan that we set out, and he's definitely still very much on the up and will come on from his run the other day," Maher said of Tornado Valley. "We've put the blinkers on just help him focus that little bit, he is pretty casual, so I think we'll get a twist there. He [Unit Five] trialled super, he came through his trial well, and while he hadn't travelled before, that's been no problem at all. I thought anywhere inside [barrier] ten would be ideal and he's drawn nine, so that's not too bad. They're very good chances, the favourite looks very hard to beat, but I think they'll be thereabouts. Bjorn's [Warwoven] has drawn well [barrier six] and it's the favourite for a reason – it looks a good on-speed, tough horse, and they're hard to beat – but I'm very happy with ours."

Freedman hoping for maiden Magic Millions win

Gold Coast-based trainer Michael Freedman is hoping he can land a first win at his local Magic Millions carnival when he saddles up short-priced Magic Millions 3YO Guineas (RL, 1400m) favourite Ninja (Farnan). The three-year-old gelding stamped home his claims for this weekend's $3 million contest when running out a 4.8-length winner of the Vo Rogue Plate (Gr 3, 1300m), but has drawn barrier 17 for the Guineas. "It is what it is, right?" Freedman said of the draw. "It's not ideal, but you can't do much about it. We've just got to have a good look at the race and see how we ride him. Tommy [Berry] will do a lot of homework on the race, so hopefully we get it right. He's terrific. I couldn't be happier with him- he's thrived since his last win. There's a nice run into that first part so we'll just get Tommy to do a lot of homework on the race and try and hatch a plan to overcome the gate. He's good to go." Freedman will also be represented by Encoder (Encryption) in the Magic Millions Subzero (2200m), a race the horse won last year when trained by brother Lee. "He's pulled up from his run really well," Freedman said of Encoder's last-start second in The Wave (1800m). "Damian Lane on, he's a great jockey, he obviously races well at this track so he'll give it a good shake."

Dwyer back in spotlight on the Gold Coast

Having been thrown into the spotlight two decades ago with Group 1 winner Regimental Gal (General Nediym), trainer Shaun Dwyer could have another very classy filly on his hands in the shape of Dragonne Rouge (Dracarys). The daughter of Dracarys (Snitzel) will tackle Saturday's Magic Millions 3YO Guineas at the Gold Coast and comes into the race already a winner at stakes level, having scored in the Calaway Gal (Listed, 1200m) at Eagle Farm back in April as a juvenile. Dragonne Rouge is a $51 outsider to give the 67-year-old Dwyer another Magic Millions victory, with Regimental Gal having won the race in 2003. “She’s a very good filly and I can’t see why she can’t go on to better things in Black-Type races,” Dwyer told Racing.com. “We drew the outside in the Nudgee [Stakes, eighth] and ended up on the fence which was the worst part of the track. She was second 50 metres past the post. I had her blood taken last Friday and she’s spot on. I never thought she would go from winning her maiden at a Sunshine Coast meeting to winning a Listed race at just her third start. Magic Millions races are always hard to win but I can’t see why she won’t be very competitive as she’s been working extremely well and has drawn well in six.”

Curtis still Sydney Cup dreaming with Bacio

Bacio Del Mist (Credit: Getty Images)

Co-trainer Lee Curtis is hopeful that this can be the year that Bacio Del Mist (Reliable Man) takes his place in the Sydney Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) and he will begin his journey to the Group 1 in Saturday's January Cup (Listed, 2000m) at Rosehill. The now eight-year-old mare has run twice so far this preparation, reappearing with an eighth placing in a Benchmark 78 (1550m) at Canterbury before a last-start fourth in a Benchmark 88 (2000m) at Randwick on December 27. “I feel like she’s in career best form. Her work on Saturday was very good, every year she just gets better and better,’’ Curtis, who trains in partnership with his wife Cherie, told Racing.com. “We toyed with bringing her up [to the Gold Coast] for the Subzero but she’s not a great traveller and there’s a little bit against her, we thought we’d play it safe and run on her home track. The big aim is to try and get her into the Sydney Cup so it’d be better if her rating came up a bit. That’s where we’d love to see her at the end of the autumn. We’re upbeat about her chances particularly if some rain arrives. Her run the other day was really good, she just got a little held up for a stride. When she raced first-up she’d had a few little problems and was delayed getting back to the races by probably three weeks. Third-up into that race it’s just perfect. At some point we’ll probably have to say 'you’re going to have to retire' but there’s no doubt she’s a much stronger horse than she was 18 months to two years ago.”

Six Of Wands bidding for hat-trick

The Matt Hoysted-trained Six Of Wands (Zousain) will bid to land a hat-trick of wins when he lines up in a Benchmark 58 (1350m) at Ipswich on Thursday. The four-year-old son of Zousain (Zoustar) broke his maiden at the seventh time of asking when first-up for the campaign before doubling his tally over this weekend's course and distance on January 3. "He's racing in good form but the gate has made things a bit tricky," Hoysted said of barrier ten. "He's got good gate speed and the 1350 metres at Ipswich is a beautiful start as he has the whole back straight to work across. It will all depend on how much work he's made to do early but it is a nice progressional race and he does get in well enough with Fiona's [two-kilogram] claim. He's coping with his racing at the moment well and being able to stay in this grade before we go to higher competition."

Baker mare scores at Randwick-Kensington

James McDonald enjoyed a double at Wednesday's Randwick-Kensington meeting, steering home the John O'Shea and Tom Charlton-trained debutant Astronomix (Calyx) to victory in a 1000-metre maiden before scoring aboard hot favourite Unleeshing (Dundeel) for Bjorn Baker in a Benchmark 64 (1550m). Dropping back in grade after a narrow third placing in Benchmark 78 company, Unleeshing was heavily supported to start the $1.55 favourite and had no problem in scoring by four lengths over Shanoni (Nicconi). "It was an easy win," Baker's racing manager Luke Hilton said. "She might even get a little bit further and hopefully she takes come confidence." McDonald was also complimentary in his post-race comments: "That was painless, she never felt like she was ever going to lose. They just dawdled the first furlong and a half, and then obviously a little bit of pace got injected. We ended up in a good spot and away she went. There's about a million owners so I'm sure there's uncles and sisters and brothers that are related to anyone in the horse!"

Bott upbeat on Sir Delius

Adrian Bott is buoyant about dual Group 1 winner Sir Delius (Frankel) as the emerging stable star takes to the trials at Randwick on Thursday. The Irish import landed breakout back-to-back wins in the Underwood Stakes (Gr 1, 1800m) and Turnbull Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m) but was ruled out of both the spring’s Cox Plate (Gr 1, 2040m) and Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) after mandatory scans revealed he was at a heightened risk of injury. "[He] won’t be asked for much – just going out and stretching his legs,’’ Bott, who trains in partnership with Gai Waterhouse, told Racing.com. ‘’But he seems to be back in good order. He’s building up nicely towards the autumn. It’s still very early days for him. It’s an 850-metre trial and he’ll likely have a few trials before we do see him get back to the races. Mostly likely, a lightish autumn again as we want to try and focus around the spring once more. At this stage everything is planned for him to be running in Sydney [this autumn]. As I said, a relatively light campaign, but a race like the Queen Elizabeth [Stakes] is a race that could be where we want to see him in his grand final. We’d like to see him down in Melbourne again at some point, but it will be step-be step with him. We’ll be monitoring his progress, but he looks in terrific order.’’

Victoria launches most lucrative maiden series

Victoria’s maiden ranks are to receive an injection of prize-money this autumn with the launch of the inaugural Sportsbet Up & Coming Stars Series, a new initiative that will culminate in a $300,000 final at Caulfield in April. Worth a total of $925,000, including a dedicated jockey incentive, the series will officially become Australia’s richest race series for maiden horses when it begins with a $100,000 three-year-old Maiden Plate (1200m) at Caulfield Heath on Wednesday, March 4. The opening heat is the first of seven qualifying races, all to be run at Sportsbet-sponsored racetracks, with the first and second placegetters from each heat progressing to the $300,000 grand final at Caulfield on Saturday, April 11. “The inaugural Sportsbet Up & Coming Stars Series offers yet another opportunity for maiden horses to turbocharge their racing careers by landing a significant windfall for their connections,” Racing Victoria chief operating officer Vaughn Lynch told Racing.com. “With the Up & Coming Stars set to build on the success of the Emerging Stars and the Future Stars, there has never been a better time to own a maiden horse here in Victoria. In conjunction with Sportsbet, we are hopeful interstate trainers will also target some of these rich heats as we build towards the inaugural final at Caulfield in April.”

Rockhampton meeting moved

Racing Queensland has advised that the race meeting scheduled for Rockhampton on January 18 has been transferred to Wednesday, January 21. The transfer has been deemed necessary due to the predicted flooding around Callaghan Park. Nominations for this meeting have been re-opened (existing nominations given preference) and will close on Friday, January 16 at 9am. Acceptances for this meeting will close on Monday, January 19 at 9am.

McKays realistic as they return to happy hunting ground

Spencer  (Credit: Race Images)

Father-and-son training partners Peter and Shaun McKay are taking a realistic approach to their prospects of further success when they return to their favourite track on the middle day of the Wellington Cup carnival. Trentham has been a happy hunting ground for the Matamata duo during their partnership that is now its fourth season, with 13 wins at a 20 percent strike-rate in their overall tally of 38 wins. Their highlight together was Wolfgang’s (Puccini) double last season in the Wellington Cup (Gr 3, 3200m) and New Zealand St Leger (2500m), while in his previous career as a jockey, Shaun’s career-high came on stable runner The Mitigator (Master Of Design) in the 2020 Thorndon Mile (Gr 1, 1600m). Peter also trained 2008 and 2015 Thorndon Mile winners Alamosa (O’Reilly) and Puccini (Encosta De Lago), and on Saturday he and his son will saddle up Spencer (Derryn) in quest of further success in the 1600-metre feature. “It was a worry when we entered him for the Thorndon that off his high rating he would end up with something like 59 kilos, but then when the Kelsos decided to run Legarto, that all changed,” McKay said. "With a mare like her in the field the weight scale has ended up in our horse’s favour with 54.5 kilos, but we’re still being realistic about our chances. He races best when he relaxes and gets into a rhythm, so that’s what we’re hoping will play out on Saturday. From his draw [ten] the idea will be to roll forward and lead. Masa [Hashizume] rode him in his Tuesday gallop, so he’s had a good feel of him ahead of the weekend.”

60 for Darci Brahma

Speed Dragon (6 g ex Keenly by Keeninsky) became the 60th individual stakes winner for now-retired The Oaks Stud stallion Darci Brahma (Danehill) when scoring in Wednesday’s January Cup (Gr 3, 1800m) at Happy Valley. The sole Group-race of the Hong Kong racing season to be staged at Happy Valley, The Francis Lui-trained gelding ran out a cosy half-length winner over Huge Wave (Vadamos). There was a further three-quarters of a length back to Helene Feeling (Sioux Nation) in third. Bred by The Oaks Stud and raced by Peter Chu Ka Lok, Speed Dragon is a half-brother to the Group 2-placed winner Luminous (Reliable Man) being out of the winning Keeninsky (Stravinsky) mare Keenly. Darci Brahma was pensioned from stallion duties in 2023.

ANZ News

If Shiki (Too Darn Hot) wins the Gold Coast’s Magic Millions 2YO Classic (RL, 1200m), it would serve not only as a major boon for the South Australian breeding industry, but a huge vote of confidence for how her breeders Cornerstone Park do business.

The Waterhouse-Bott trained filly is on the third line of betting at around $10 for the $3 million sprint, and five years of meticulous planning will come to a head when she jumps on Saturday, albeit with jockey Tim Clark having to negotiate an awkward gate in ten of 16.

Cornerstone, tapping into the choice livestock and winery conditions of the famous Barossa Valley, is one of the flagships of the South Australian breeding industry. And so it probably should be, having some daunting shoes to fill in that it’s the old Lindsay Park - the legendary breeding institution established by Colin Hayes.

The SA industry has faced considerable challenge and change in the past several years, mostly with the impact of making it smaller, but victory for Shiki on Saturday would showcase how the state can, and often does, punch above its weight.

Cornerstone used to stand stallions, but logistics and the reality of the shrinking local broodmare band led them in a different direction in 2023. That was around the time businessman John Frankhuisen - who made his fortune not in making wine but the labels that go on the bottles - bought out Sam Hayes, Colin’s grandson, to become the stud’s major shareholder.

His fellow shareholder is general manager Sam Pritchard-Gordon, the expat Englishman who learned his craft at some of the most successful studs in the UK before branching into Australia, first as a trainer and later joining Hayes at Cornerstone.

Pritchard-Gordon was moving to improve Cornerstone’s mares - who now number around 17 - when he bought Shiki’s dam Jest Excel (Exceed And Excel) at the Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale of 2021, for $120,000. Veteran SA breeder Steve Millar bought in with him, and is thus the co-breeder of Shiki.

Jest Excel was a fast mare who’d won three south-east Queensland provincial races from 900-1000 metres for Tony Gollan. Her first owners for her stud career were renowned judges Sheamus Mills and Dean Harvey, who bred her first foal - a now four-time country winning six-year-old mare named Love My Louis (Capitalist) - before putting Jest Excel up for sale.

A healthy sprinkling of black type dotted the mare’s page. She was a half-sister to Jiang (Testa Rossa), who won the VRC Maribyrnong Plate (Gr 2, 1000m) before going to Hong Kong as Blue Genes and winning.

Third dam Elegant Shell (Deep Diver) won four stakes races in Perth before throwing another black type victor and the dam of Perth Group 2 winner Zabanella (Zabaleta).

Pritchard-Gordon was drawn to the fact Jest Excel was by a noted broodmare sire in Exceed And Excel (Danehill). It also fitted his business model, and budget, that she was in-foal to Pride Of Dubai (Street Cry).

While that Coolmore stallion would make a strong fist of trying to win Australia’s champion sires’ title in 2024-25 - before ultimately weakening into third - in 2021 he was yet to enjoy such salad days.

This worked in the favour of Pritchard-Gordon, who relishes the challenge of buying in-foal mares.

“It’s one thing I love doing,” he told It’s In The Blood. “If I’m buying horses at a sale, I make a point of working really hard and seeing everything. But shopping on a budget, where I get a bit of value is with mares carrying the wrong pregnancies, or slightly less commercial pregnancies.

“I don’t have to forfeit a physical or a pedigree. Where I find the value is if they’re not carrying the right pregnancy I can get a mare at the right price.

“Pride Of Dubai had gone a bit cold at that point, and that allowed us to buy Jest Excel, who was a fast mare, and a good physical.”

Targeting - and assessing - in-foal mares also brings its challenges, but Pritchard-Gordon backs his eye and his experience.

“It’s something I’ve always done, and enjoy doing,” he said. “Having worked for some big breeders, you get an eye for it, and it’s one thing I always pride myself on.”

Validating Pritchard-Gordon’s assessment of a “wrong pregnancy”, the Pride Of Dubai colt sold as a yearling for $60,000, and was onsold to China via the Magic Millions 2YOs In Training sale, for $80,000.

First, Cornerstone and Millar put Jest Excel to Eureka Stud’s Spirit Of Boom (Sequalo), which produced an attractive colt, later known as Excelboom. Bought as a yearling at the Gold Coast by Tony Gollan and John Foote for $160,000, the now three-year-old gelding won his first race at his sixth start only last Friday.

A day later, his little sister Shiki franked the Gatton maiden form by winning the Gold Coast’s Gold Pearl (1100m) by 2.04 lengths, to go with her ATC Gimcrack Stakes (Gr 3, 1000m) victory on debut two starts earlier, and providing further validation to the mating that produced her.

Pritchard-Gordon had selected Too Darn Hot (Dubawi) before he was Too Darn Hot the boom stallion and too darn hot to pay for. At that time, with the Darley shuttler’s first Australian crop being yearlings, he only stood for $44,000 (inc GST). After taking the country’s first and second-season sire titles, his fee was $275,000 (inc GST) last spring.

The attraction for putting Jest Excel to Too Darn Hot was multi-faceted.

“The idea worked well physically, but also the mare was throwing a really good type of horse,” Pritchard-Gordon said.

“Cornerstone really needed to kick some financial goals, and I’d been eyeing up sires whose progeny I liked as foals and backing my judgment in.

“I’d liked the look of the Too Darn Hot foals we’d seen on the ground, and I thought an Exceed And Excel mare would make a good cross. I wanted to put some stout European blood across a pure Australian product, which she is being by Exceed And Excel and with her damsire being Rory’s Jester, and it’s worked well.

“Jest Excel was fast but probably needed a bit of stamina brought into her. I thought Too Darn Hot could do that given his maternal page. That, coupled with the physical, has worked out well.”

Too Darn Hot’s dam was the outstanding Da Re Mi (Singspiel), whose three Group 1 successes came over distance in Ireland’s Pretty Polly Stakes and Dubai’s Sheema Classic (both 2000m), and the Yorkshire Oaks (2400m).

Plus the mating has subsequently been shown to be prescient. Exceed And Excel has turned out to be Too Darn Hot’s best nick for stakes winners, with more than seven runners. It’s produced three of them from 14 starters, at 21 per cent, among ten winners overall, plus two stakes placegetters.

The three stakes winners are Shiki, Tropicus and Fitzella, a filly descended from Exceed And Excel’s shuttling to Britain, who won Ascot’s Princess Margaret Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) last July.

Too Darn Hot’s sire Dubawi (Dubai Millennium) over Exceed And Excel’s sire Danehill (Danzig) runs at 13 per cent, with five stakes winners from 37 runners. But Dubawi has fired with another son of Danehill in Dansili, with that nick yielding ten stakes winners from 44 runners at 22 per cent.

Cornerstone offered Shiki at Inglis’s Sydney Weanling Sale of 2024. Riverstone Lodge and Suman Hedge Bloodstock obliged for $150,000, later flipping her at the Gold Coast for $420,000, to Waterhouse-Bott and Kurrinda Bloodstock, in whose blue and white colours she races.

Riverstone, Hedge and Bevan Smith Bloodstock also pitched up when Cornerstone offered the then-unraced Shiki’s half-sister by Ole Kirk (Written Tycoon) at last year’s Gold Coast National Weanling Sale, paying $200,000. That filly was pinhooked at the Gold Coast on Wednesday for $380,000 when bought, unsurprisingly, by Waterhouse-Bott in cahoots with Rapid Equine and Kestrel Thoroughbreds.

Pritchard-Gordon is angst-free about the pinhookers making almost three times the weanling price for which he sold Shiki.

“We’re a young farm. It doesn’t bother me,” he said. “In fact, it makes me happy, because it means I’ve produced the right product that can go on and people want to buy. Plus those bigger farms can get them into the top yearling sales more easily.

“So that idea works well for Cornerstone at this stage of its development. Shiki was a good looking foal we got good money for as a weanling, and it was good to see Riverstone make good money on the other side too.

“And it’s all worked out in our favour because she’s ended up in a stable that gets the best out of two-year-olds.”

Too Darn Hot’s capacity for breeding stamina is shown in the diverse range of his distance winners. Three of his 31 stakes victors have come at 1000 metres, and one in the “2400 metres or more” range, where he’s had 15 winners from 42 runners.

Shiki looked to have speed to burn when she won her heat in the fastest time of Sydney’s first set of official two-year-old barrier trials, and then when she narrowly took the Gimcrack. But by the style of her win last Saturday over 1100 metres, it would appear she’d have no trouble with 1200 metres and further.

Following a spell after the Gimcrack, two more trial wins preceded a disappointing fourth of seven at $1.80 on resumption in a 1000-metre Randwick two-year-old plate won by Magic Millions favourite Warwoven (Sword Of State). Co-trainer Adrian Bott later reflected she was too fresh and had gone overly hard in front that day.

Settling fifth at the Gold Coast last Saturday to, as Bott said, “harness her speed”, she produced an explosive burst in the straight and won comfortably, raising hopes for her grand final this weekend.

Cornerstone will send seven yearlings to Inglis’s Melbourne Premier Yearling Sale, and 12 to Magic Millions Adelaide, though Pritchard-Gordon says the farm’s sights are on more major sales after the broodmare improvements made since Frankhuisen bought in.

“Off the back of John investing into nicer mares, we have fewer mares that fall into that Adelaide rank. We’re giving ourselves the opportunity to get into the bigger sales,” he said, adding Cornerstone was confident of expanding on the large handful of stakes winners it has bred.

“I’d like to think we’re changing the direction of the farm and hopefully there’ll be more and more from here on in.”

As for the impact of a Shiki victory this Saturday?

“It’d mean everything,” he said. “At the end of the day, hanging your hat on a particular horse is becoming a more and more important part of a vendor’s profile.

“Shiki will go close to being a Champion Two-Year-Old if she can win, and that would be a glowing endorsement not only for our farm but for South Australia. Our state only breeds about two per cent of Australia’s horse population, so it would prove that location has an overriding bearing on how good the stock can be.”

Shiki’s is a fairly rare “clean” pedigree with no inbreeding. Finally some duplications occur a little further back, highlighted by the great Northern Dancer (Nearctic) at 6m, 7m, 6m x 5m, 5m, in a diverse spread via Shareef Dancer, Lyphard and Sadler’s Wells, then Danzig and Lomond.

Buckpasser (Tom Fool) appears in strong positions at 6f x 6f via Con Game, dam of Too Darn Hot’s third sire Seeking The Gold (Mr Prospector) and Spring Adieu, Danehill’s second dam.

Almahmoud (Mahmoud) is the most repeated mare with seven spots from generations seven through nine, six of them being her mighty daughter Natalma (Native Dancer).

Nearco (Pharos) is the dominant stallion with 16 appearances, from Hyperion (Gainsborough) and Pharos (Phalaris) with 13 each, and Blenheim (Blandford) with ten.

Jest Excel now has a November filly foal by Artorius (Flying Artie) at foot and remains empty, with Pritchard-Gordon mulling a return to Too Darn Hot next spring.

Francis Lui posts 1,000th Hong Kong win with Speed Dragon’s January Cup triumph

Francis Lui soared into rarified territory with Speed Dragon’s (Darci Brahma) spectacular January Cup Handicap (Gr 3, 1800m) victory at Happy Valley on Wednesday night, becoming only the sixth trainer in Hong Kong racing history to saddle 1,000 wins or more in the jurisdiction.

Renowned as the ultimate quiet achiever, Lui joined John Moore (1,735), John Size (1,629), Tony Cruz (1,583), Caspar Fownes (1,196) and Ricky Yiu (1,082) in one of the city’s most exclusive clubs when Speed Dragon charged from last on the home turn under Lyle Hewitson to score by half-a-length from Huge Wave (Vadamos) and last year’s January Cup victor Helene Feeling (Sioux Nation) in 1m 48s.

Hong Kong champion trainer in 2023/24 and famed as the horseman behind ten-time Group 1 winner Golden Sixty’s (Medaglia D’Oro) supreme career, Lui has been involved in Hong Kong racing for more than 50 years, graduating from The Hong Kong Jockey Club’s Apprentice Jockeys’ School and riding 36 winners between 1975 and 1982, and later becoming an assistant trainer before receiving his own licence to train in 1996/97.

Cap Ferrat (Snitzel) last season gave Lui a second Hong Kong Derby (2000m) trophy, five years after Golden Sixty prevailed in 2020, adding to a stable honour roll which includes the Group 1 achievement of Lucky Bubbles (Sebring) and a string of other prestigious races.

“I feel very happy. It’s a big number [1,000 wins] and it’s not easy. Golden Sixty is special, but every winner to me is very important and for the owners,” Lui said.

Referring to Speed Dragon’s win, Lui said: “Always these races, a light weight is favourable. It all depends on the programme, but I think he’ll race at both Happy Valley and Sha Tin.”

Needing two winners entering the meeting to reach the 1,000-win milestone, Lui struck with Winning Money (Deep Field) in the Class 4 Monaco Handicap (1200m) under Zac Purton before Hewitson’s unflustered display on Speed Dragon.

Hewitson, who posted his first Group-race winner in Hong Kong, said: “I’m really happy that I could get it done. I’ve been touched off in a few Group races and most of them were for Francis, too, so to get the nose in front in such good fashion tonight, I’m thoroughly enjoying it.

“I got shuffled back to last on the turn but thankfully that was the section where they picked up the speed and I got a track into it and he quickened so well, I had to wait for the gap and before it had any chance to close, he was through and he won with authority.

“So, it was full of merit and a horse that is just thriving here.”

Jimmy Ting notched his 200th winner as a trainer when Blazing Beam (Reward For Effort) triumphed in the Class 5 Meteorites Handicap (1200m). Fresh from the Class 2 success of leading Four-Year-Old Classic Series contender Little Paradise at Sha Tin on January 11, Ting said: “Before the race, I didn’t think about the fact it was my 200th winner.

“Of course, I’m really happy, there has been lots of hard work from my team. It is a good achievement. He has been a bit of a tricky horse, so this win was a bit of a surprise. I think the switch to Class 5 helped. He has been slowly maturing as well.”

Fortunate Son (U S Navy Flag) made it two course and distance wins for the season with success in the Class 4 Yummy Handicap under Hugh Bowman for Cody Mo, who sealed a race-to-race double when Lucky Planet (Pariah) blitzed his rivals in the Class 4 Croisette Handicap (1200m) under Matthew Poon after jumping lengths clear of his rivals at the start.

“He’s always quick out of the gate, but sometimes too quick because sometimes he can be faster than the gates opening,” Poon said. “So, I just have to focus on the timing and make sure he’s not too soon to jump and today, he had the perfect timing and he flew out of the gates.

“It was a big help because he saved energy early and he could last until the winning post carrying the big weight. I would like to thank Mr Leung and his family because they support me since I started, so I’m really happy to ride winners for them.”

Fresh from a brilliant winning ride on Young Emperor (Holy Roman Emperor) at Sha Tin last Sunday, Luke Ferraris produced another ground-saving display on Fortune Star (U S Navy Flag) for Mark Newnham in the Class 4 Yacht Club Handicap (1650m).

“It’s good, we went through something of a quiet patch, so it’s good to get the ball rolling again,” Ferraris said. “Physically, he’s there and he’s strong but mentally, he’s like a two-year-old.”

Newnham extended his lead at the top of the trainers’ championship when Max Que (Akeed Mofeed) comfortably accounted for his rivals in the Class 3 APM Monaco Cup Handicap (1650m) Purton. Newnham has 32 wins for the season and leads Fownes (30) and David Hayes (26), who scored with Storm Rider (Dracarys) in the Class 2 Cannes Handicap (1200m) under Bowman.

Fownes teamed with Alexis Badel to clinch the finale, the Class 3 Saint Tropez Handicap (1200m), when Mighty Commander (Artie Schiller) powered from the back of the field on the home turn to post his third course victory.

Hong Kong racing continues at Sha Tin on Sunday.
