Ottobre goes to $270,000 for Book 2 topper as curtain comes down on Magic Millions

Tony Ottobre was delighted to have acquired his latest “Jenni” horse after buying Magic Millions Gold Coast’s Book 2 topper for “a lot more than I expected” on a robust closing day of trading on Sunday.

Ottobre’s Cape Schanck Stud had to go to $270,000 to acquire Lot 1113, a filly by vendor Yulong’s young stallion Tagaloa (Lord Kanaloa) out of a full-sister to dual Group 1 winner and siring sensation Extreme Choice (Not A Single Doubt).

The well-proportioned filly had obviously caught the eye of several other keen shoppers - taking their lead from a reasonably strong Book 1 sale - on a day in which a more streamlined Book 2 performed well, especially in comparison to 2025’s flat results.

What's On

A reduction from 380 catalogued lots last year to 241 this time, with the sale halved from two days to one, helped Book 2 return results that had Magic Millions managing director Barry Bowditch beaming over a “solid” outcome.

With attendances and interest perhaps also aided by the absence of race meetings in Queensland on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday, Book 2 boasted an average of $51,466 late on Sunday night, up from 2025’s figure of $44,419.

The clearance rate of 84.04 per cent was substantially up from the 70 per cent at the same stage after last year’s sale, the median had leapt from $36,000 to $42,500, and the gross - with 56 fewer lots sold, was $9,212,500, compared with $10,673,000.

Ottobre, who targeted Book 2 exclusively and became its biggest buyer, was thrilled to emerge from a spirited bidding duel with a filly who’ll continue to carry the torch for his fleet of horses named after his late daughter Jenni.

“I loved its swagger, the way it walked, the way it paraded, and it was extremely smart; you could tell that from the back parade ring,” Ottobre told ANZ News.

“While all the other horses were jumping around and carrying on, this filly was just looking at them and going about its business.

“Demeanour is the number one important thing in a racehorse. This is obviously a smart horse, and she’s very well put together.”

The filly’s pedigree also made a compelling argument. While dam Mightily (Not A Single Doubt) won only once - at humble Balranald - in six starts, she hails from one of the hottest families in Australia, in that her full brother is Newgate Farm’s sub-fertile star Extreme Choice. The 12-year-old’s stakes winners to runners ratio of 11.6 per cent has helped make him the most expensive sire in the country, at $330,000 (inc GST).

Mightily’s only two runners are country winners, with one placed in Adelaide city class.

And third dam Going To Extremes (Nasty And Bold) was a stakes winner in Canada.

“The pedigree was very attractive. The mother’s a full-sister to Extreme Choice. That put her pretty high on my list,” said Ottobre, adding he wasn’t sure which of his regular trainers would be handed the filly.

“To be honest, she cost a bit more than I thought. I came here for Book 2 hoping it wouldn’t cost me those sorts of figures.

“I thought she was a really nice type, and that maybe $180,000 or $200,000 was going to pull her up, but it sounds like quite a few other buyers were on her, more than likely a few buyers from book one. But I wanted her, so I went that bit extra.”

Not that it’s tricky for him, Ottobre already has a name picked out.

“I’ll call her Jenni Extreme,” he said.

When it was suggested “Extreme Jenni” might flow better, Ottobre explained: “I like to put the ‘Jenni’ first. When people search for my horses, that makes it easier.”

Ottobre also paid $85,000 for Murulla Stud’s Lot 1148, a filly by Tassort (Brazen Beau) from a half-sister to dual Hong Kong Champion Sprinter Beat The Clock (Hinchinbrook). He also secured Lot 1199 - Figtree Thoroughbreds’ filly by Victor Ludorum (Shamardal) - for $60,000.

That gave Ottobre a total Book 2 spend of $415,000, well clear of second-highest Jun Almeda, with $271,000.

The seasoned buyer said the stronger year-on-year results for Book 2 were in step with the outcomes of Book 1, where the average of $270,468 and clearance rate of 87.35 per cent compared favourably to 2025’s figures of $269,000 and 83.05 per cent.

“If you’re big in Book 1, Book 2 is going to be big too,” Ottobre said.

“Everyone saw what they were paying in Book 1, and realised they’d have to pay a bit more than normal. And there’s some fantastic looking horses here too.

“I think Magic Millions has definitely got the best horses in the country up for sale. We’re in January, and they’re very well developed, so they’re ready to go earlier, so I think it’s the best sale to get a good horse.

“The winning ratios and the black type that comes from Magic Millions shows they are quite good.”

Ottobre didn’t mind another bit of news on Sunday - the retirement of Via Sistina (Fastnet Rock) - as his star performer Pride Of Jenni (Pride Of Dubai) gears up for her autumn campaign.

“We’re looking at the All-Star Mile mainly, but maybe now Via Sistina’s retired, we might have another go at the Queen Elizabeth Stakes too,” he said, referring to the race Pride Of Jenni won in such memorable tearaway style in 2024.

Sunday’s second-top price went to Lot 1077, a filly by Better Than Ready (More Than Ready) sold from the Sunshine State’s Yarramalong Park’s draft to Queensland buyer Jay Bellamy for $200,000.

The filly is the fourth living foal from the unraced Istiraaha (Redoute’s Choice), a half-sister to Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) winner Rewaaya (Singspiel).

Scone-based trainer Brett Cavanough paid $180,000 for the third top yearling, Lot 1154, Eureka Stud’s colt by Bivouac (Exceed And Excel) out of the two-time winning sprinter Rebel Cry (Street Cry).

Yulong was comfortably the leading Book 2 vendor by average ($102,188) - ahead of Noble Bend Farm’s $88,000 - and by aggregate ($817,500) ahead of Bowness Stud ($693,000) and Queensland’s Eureka Stud ($617,500).

Ottobre’s Tagaloa filly helped make that sire Book 2’s leading stallion by averages - for three or more lots sold - at $140,000, ahead of Vinery’s Ole Kirk (Written Tycoon) at $98,333.

Leading sire by aggregate was Lyndhurst Stud’s Better Than Ready, with 15 lots grossing $873,000, from Queensland rival Spirit Of Boom (Sequalo), whose 11 sold yearlings netted $580,000.

"I thought today for Book Two was a really solid day," Bowditch said. "I think it [the one day format] worked very well.

"The vendors received it well. They all had their horses in to parade on Friday and Saturday and also this morning.

"The vibe and the new faces on the results sheet across the day was great - a new influx of buyers and they really supported the sale.

"The numbers today were great. We've got a gross over $9.2 million and a clearance over 84 per cent.

"All in all, to have 140 less horses [catalogued] and have a really healthy and solid day, it's turned out a good format - it was really solid and ends the sale well.”

Morning Briefing

Australia

Australia Stakes target for War Machine

Group 1 winner War Machine (Harry Angel) will kick off his latest campaign in Friday night’s Australia Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) at Pakenham. The Lindsay Park-trained gelding confirmed his place among the nation’s elite sprinters with a dominant victory in the Stradbroke Handicap (Gr 1, 1400m) at Eagle Farm last winter before resuming in the spring with an equally impressive performance, carrying 60 kilograms to win the Gilgai Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) at Flemington. Those performances earned War Machine a slot in The Everest (Gr 1, 1200m), where he was sent out third favourite behind Ka Ying Rising (Shamexpress) but failed to fire. He then struggled on heavy ground in the Russell Balding Stakes (1300m) before heading to the paddock. War Machine has had two jump-outs ahead of his return, including a strong win in his latest heat at Werribee. “He's very good, and he's on track to run in the Australia Stakes,” JD Hayes, who trains in partnership with his brothers Ben and Will, said. “The Sydney trips didn't quite go to plan. The thing we're holding onto is how brilliant he was first time down the straight, off that Queensland freshen as well. We're really happy with the order he's presenting and trialling up in, and I thought at Werribee on Friday he showed he’s ready to run a really good race first-up.” Hayes said War Machine’s rating of 114 makes him more suited to weight-for-age racing moving forward. “We're largely going to target him towards that traditional path through the autumn,” he said. “[The Newmarket] is something we will consider, but we'll see how he goes on Friday and pick the races accordingly for him.”

Birchley heading to NZ for Karaka date

Liam Birchley (Credit: Grant Peters)

Queensland trainer Liam Birchley is no stranger to success in New Zealand’s richest two-year-old race and he is hoping lightning can strike again when he lines up two fillies in next Saturday’s $1 million Karaka Millions 2YO (RL, 1200m) at Ellerslie.

Birchley won the feature with Sister Havana (General Nediym) in 2010 and again in 2015 with Hardline (Showcasing), having also finished second in 2009 with Sarge In Charge (Golan).

His 2026 representatives are Dream Roca, an El Roca (Fastnet Rock) filly purchased for NZ$75,000 from Westbury Stud’s Book 2 draft, and Vanzadee, a Vanbrugh (Encosta De Lago) filly secured for NZ$26,000 from the HGT Bloodstock draft at the same sale.

Both fillies arrive off last-start victories and impressed Birchley in their most recent work, including a 1200-metre jump-out at the Sunshine Coast.

“I don’t make a point of targeting this race for horses I buy from the Karaka Yearling Sale, preferring to train them the same and hope they put their hands up to take the opportunity and both of these fillies have done just that,” Birchley said.

“With what they have shown me I am delighted I can bring them both to New Zealand and I think they will be pretty competitive.”

Birchley said both fillies have surprised with their early speed despite pedigrees that suggest they may ultimately appreciate further.

“As it turns out they both have very good early speed, which is crucial for a two-year-old, and can maintain a strong gallop which will suit this race,” he said.

Birchley and his runners arrived in New Zealand on Sunday, with open trackwork at Ellerslie scheduled for Tuesday ahead of the barrier draw. “After that you just want some luck in running and hope they are up to the task,” he said.

Hawkesbury trials postponed

The Hawkesbury trials scheduled for Monday, January 19 have been postponed due to the current state of the track and will now be conducted on Tuesday, January 20.

Pukekohe detour pays off for Tajana

Tajana (Credit: Race Images)

A change of plans proved effective for trainers Shaune Ritchie and Colm Murray when Oaks-bound filly Tajana (Darci Brahma) produced a winning performance at Pukekohe on Sunday. The New Zealand Oaks (Gr 1, 2400m) contender had also been entered for Saturday’s Desert Gold Stakes (Gr 3, 1600m) at Trentham, but persistent wet weather and travel considerations prompted the Cambridge trainers to opt for a closer-to-home assignment. “It was hard with the weather and the rain coming in,” Murray said. “It is a big call to make to head seven-hours down the road compared to an hour-and-a-bit up here, so I think we made the right call.” Lining up in the MyRacehorse 1600 (1600m) against just three rivals, Tajana was given a quiet ride early by George Rooke before improving into the race and striking the front approaching the 300-metre mark. She began to idle late but held on to score by 0.3 lengths over Lunaman (Reliable Man). “She gets to the front a bit too soon and switches off,” Murray said. “I’m very happy going forward. We’re glad we came here to give her a bit of a soft kill, which wasn’t that soft in the end, I had to wipe my brow when I saw that one [Lunaman] coming after us.” It was Tajana’s first start since the New Zealand 2,000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m), where she finished 11th on a Heavy 9 track, and Murray said the filly will benefit as she steps up in trip. “We’ll go forward to the Sir Tristram Fillies Classic as long as she pulls up okay, and go from there to the Oaks,” he said. “We think the more distance the better. We are quietly confident heading up to 2000 metres-plus.”

Sharrock duo to commence Derby bids

Country Salon (outside) (Credit: Race Images)

Stratford trainer Gavin Sharrock is again eyeing classic success, with two members of his stable set to begin their respective paths toward the New Zealand Derby (Gr 1, 2400m) in March. Homebred gelding Country Salon (Darci Brahma) will resume in Monday’s Race Images 1340 (1340m) at Wanganui, with Sharrock confident the Darci Brahma (Danehill) gelding is ready to perform following a strong runner-up finish in a recent Foxton trial. “He is very well in himself,” Sharrock said. “I was rapt with his trial at Foxton and I think he will go pretty close to winning tomorrow.” Stakes-placed at two, Country Salon finished fifth in both the Wanganui Guineas (Listed, 1200m) and Hawke’s Bay Guineas (Gr 2, 1400m) last spring and will be stepped up in trip as his campaign progresses. “He is tracking towards the Derby,” Sharrock said. “I’ll give him a mile somewhere and then we will go to the Avondale Guineas on February 21.” Sharrock also holds Derby hopes for Brave Rebel (Tivaci), who is set to run in a 2000-metre event at New Plymouth on Saturday. The gelding won his maiden over a mile last month before finishing second to Auckland Cup (Gr 2, 3200m)-bound The Precursor (St Jean) in a Rating 65 (1600m) event. Sharrock will saddle multiple runners at Wanganui on Monday, including Erbys Darci (Darci Brahma) and Porotene Tiger (Darci Brahma), while Flagship (U S Navy Flag) remains a query after drawing an outside gate. “Erbys Darci has been galloping well,” Sharrock said. “In his first-up run Porotene Tiger missed the jump by quite a bit…but he has progressed well since.”

Stakes targets looming for well-related filly

Stakes ambitions are firmly on the agenda for progressive filly Quello Dolce (U S Navy Flag) after she recorded her second consecutive victory in Saturday’s Rating 65 (1200m) contest at Trentham. Prepared by Matamata trainer Cody Cole, the well-related three-year-old overcame a wide draw to lead throughout and score by a decisive 2.2 lengths, confirming she is trending the right way as connections look ahead to black-type targets later in the season. Bred and raced by Russell and Lesley Warwick in partnership with a group of friends, Quello Dolce is out of Group 1 winner Il Quello Veloce (Captain Rio). She was unplaced in her first two starts last spring but has flourished since a freshen-up, breaking her maiden at Tauherenikau earlier this month before backing it up at Trentham. Cole said the step back south was not originally planned but proved worthwhile. “It was never the plan to come here, but I had a look at the noms and it looked a bit soft,” Cole said. “She had a good bit of determination to fight them off there and she did it quite easily.” Jockey Samantha Collett, who enjoyed an early treble on the Trentham card, was impressed with the filly’s speed and attitude: “She has taken a really good step up from that first-up win,” Collett said. “I think the key to her is that bit of give in the track. She’s just the most genuine little filly you will ever find and she has got so much gate speed. She’s putting it together now. You can’t teach horses to have that willing attitude.” Cole confirmed the Cambridge Breeders’ Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) on ANZAC Day is the likely next target. “She’s only three and is out of a good mare, so we have got to look at some black-type going forward,” he said.

Five for Bricks And Mortar

Goltzschtal (4 c ex Killer Beauty by Zenno Rob Roy) became the fifth individual stakes winner for Shadai Stallion Station’s Bricks And Mortar (Giant’s Causeway) when landing the Nikkei Shinshun Hai (Gr 2, 2000m) at Kyoto on Sunday. Ridden by Ryusei Sakai for trainer Haruki Sugiyama, the four-year-old entire defeated Family Time (Real Steel) by a neck with a further length and a half back to Libyan Glass (Kizuna) in third. Bred by Northern Farm and racing in their familiar Sunday Racing silks, Goltzschtal is a half-brother to the stakes-placed winner Art Basel (Epiphaneia) being out of the winning Zenno Rob Roy (Sunday Silence) mare Killer Beauty. Bricks And Mortar stood the 2025 northern hemisphere breeding season at a fee of ¥2,000,000 (approx. AU$18,860).

Seven for Suave Richard

Shadai Stallion Station’s Suave Richard (Heart’s Cry) chalked up his seventh individual stakes winner on Sunday when the Yuki Uehara-trained Green Energy (3 c ex Cymbal by Singspiel) scored in the Keisei Hai (Gr 3, 2000m) at Nakayama. Ridden by Keita Tosaki, the three-year-old colt defeated Matenro Gale (Epiphaneia) by a neck with a further length and a quarter back to Solennellement (Fierement) in third place. Out of the Listed-winning Singspiel (In The Wings) mare Cymbal, Green Energy is a sibling to nine winners including the Grade 2-placed Layl (Street Cry). Suave Richard stood the 2025 northern hemisphere breeding season for a fee of ¥12,000,000 (approx. AU$113,180).

Champion mare Via Sistina retired and set for a date with Dubawi

ANZ News

Via Sistina (Credit: Brett Holburt)

Via Sistina (Fastnet Rock), Yulong’s multiple Group 1-winning champion, has been retired and will return to the UK to be covered by Darley's leading stallion Dubawi (Dubai Millennium).

The mare’s trainer, Chris Waller, confirmed the news on Sunday, bringing an end to an illustrious career that yielded 16 victories, highlighted by 12 Group 1 wins and more than $19.4 million in prize-money.

“Via Sistina has performed consistently well across many seasons and has become a talking point around the world, not only within racing, but sport in general,” Waller said in an extensive statement released on social media.

“We feel that following her second Cox Plate win and her impressive victory in the Champion Stakes, she hasn’t come back this preparation as her normal, highly energetic self.”

Bred by Laundry Cottage Stud, Via Sistina was originally purchased for a modest 5,000gns from Book 3 of the Tattersalls December Yearling Sale in 2019. She went on to win five races in the UK for Joseph Tuite and George Boughey, including the 2023 edition of the Pretty Polly Stakes (Gr 1, 1m 2f) for the latter trainer. Later that year, she was sold to Yulong for 2,700,000gns at the Tattersalls December Mare Sale.

The daughter of Fastnet Rock (Danehill) exploded onto the Australian scene with an impressive victory in the Group 1 Ranvet Stakes (2000m) and went on to dominate the country’s middle-distance ranks, winning a further ten Group 1 races, including back-to-back Cox Plates (Gr 1, 2040m) at Moonee Valley.

Waller continued: “I would like to thank Via Sistina for the journey she has taken us all on, from her first-up wins over short distances to her back-to-back Cox Plate victories, which is something we will always remember. She is tough, determined and a beautiful mare to work with.

“I would like to congratulate Mr Zhang, Jun and April Zhang, Sam Fairgray and the team at Yulong for their support, and congratulate them on the success of Via Sistina’s racing career and her management.

“We look forward to seeing what the future holds for Via Sistina in the breeding barn and beyond.”

Yulong described Via Sistina as “a horse of a lifetime” and confirmed she would embark on her second career as a broodmare.

“The closing of one chapter leads to the opening of another, and while there is a tinge of sadness that we will not see her on the racetrack again, we are excited to follow Via Sistina’s journey as she embarks on motherhood,” the statement read.

“In the coming weeks, she will return to the UK and be prepared for a date with Darley’s pre-eminent global sire sensation, Dubawi.

“To say she has been a horse of a lifetime for Mr Zhang, his family and the entire Yulong team would sell the daughter of Fastnet Rock short. From the moment she stepped onto Australian turf for the first time in the 2024 Ranvet Stakes at Rosehill, Via Sistina has been nothing short of phenomenal, carrying the green and white silks to 11 standout Group 1 victories.

“She epitomises the dream for many in the sport of kings: a true underdog sold for a mere 5,000gns as a yearling, who ultimately transcended the sport, accumulating just shy of $19.5 million from 29 starts and capturing the hearts and minds of all who witnessed her in full flight.

“Our thanks go to Chris Waller and his exceptional team, who have cared for and nurtured this great mare since her arrival on Australian shores, regular jockey James McDonald, who partnered her to nine of her top-level wins, and all who have contributed to her success over the past two seasons.”

Henry Dwyer to have three-strong operation based in Newmarket

By James Thomas

Henry Dwyer (Credit:  Edward Whitaker)

Intrepid Australian trainer Henry Dwyer is planning to increase his presence in British racing, with returning champion sprinter Asfoora (Flying Artie) set to be campaigned out of Newmarket alongside two new recruits.

The Group 1-winning handler saddled Asfoora to land the King Charles III Stakes (Gr 1, 5f) at Royal Ascot in 2024, and the El-Fahkri family’s homebred duly returned to the northern hemisphere to annex last year’s Nunthorpe Stakes (Gr 1, 5f) and Prix de l'Abbaye (Gr 1, 1000m).

Dwyer was active at the latest renewal of the Tattersalls Autumn Horses-in-Training Sale, with Synners Kid (Ten Sovereigns), a two-time winner for Joseph O’Brien, picked up through Sam Haggas’s Hurworth Bloodstock at 110,000gns, while Skiathos (Wootton Bassett), a Redcar novice scorer for Karl Burke, was knocked down to Jamie Piggott and Harvey Williams at 150,000gns.

However, before the three-year-olds make their way down under, Dwyer is hoping races like the Britannia Stakes (1m) or the Golden Gates Stakes (1m 2f) at Royal Ascot will figure in their respective programmes.

“Asfoora will likely be running at most of the major festivals, as per last year, so we’ll try and find some three-year-old handicaps for these horses,” he said.

“They both come back into work this week with Asfoora, so they’ll be up and going by the time we get back over there. It’ll be nice to think we could have three runners at Royal Ascot.”

Dwyer reported that both Skiathos and Synners Kid had already been syndicated among a global ownership base. Skiathos is set to run in the silks of Australian Tim Porter, whose past runners include notable talents Bella Nipotina (Pride Of Dubai) and Honey Girl (Mayson), while Synners Kid will sport the colours of Lady Bowthorpe’s (Nathaniel) owner Emma Banks.

While European horses are routinely purchased with a view to targeting lucrative prizes in Australia, Dwyer said this project was about the sort of experiences “money can’t buy.”

“It’s not all about prize-money, I’m certainly of that opinion and so are the owners,” he said. “The dyed in the wool racing fan would pay any amount to have a winner at Royal Ascot. It’s an experience money can’t buy.

“I’ve got some good friends that I’ve met along the way over there in Europe involved, and some great friends and clients from Australia who’d saw their right arm off to have a horse running at Royal Ascot. This gives them a chance to do that. Who knows, it might become a regular thing.”

The two new recruits will be trained out of Lemos de Souza’s Newmarket base alongside Asfoora. While Dwyer will send staff member Chenelle Ellis to oversee the string, Skiathos and Synners Kid are set to reappear for De Souza, for whom they would need to reach a rating of 90, before transferring to Dwyer’s care.

He stressed that Royal Ascot was far from the be all and end all, with his experiences at other British tracks proving equally memorable.

“A lot of the owners are people I’ve just met along the journey with Asfoora, shared a beer with at the bar and we’ve become friends,” he continued. “It’s not just winning races in Europe, it’s been the whole journey of the people we’ve met, the places we’ve seen and the doors that’ve opened up.

“We won at Royal Ascot with her but we’ve had just as good a time at the other festivals like Goodwood and the Ebor at York. It’d be nice to try and share that with as many people as possible.”

Asfoora has run in the last two renewals of the King Charles III Stakes and will bid to reclaim her Royal Ascot crown after finishing fifth behind American Affair (Washington DC) last year.

Dwyer explained he had taken a different approach to her preparation, with the three-time Group 1 winner remaining in Newmarket following her Longchamp triumph last October.

“Coming back and re-acclimatising in Australia took a lot out of her last time,” the trainer said. “We thought if we were to race her again this year, which was a 50-50 call, we wouldn’t be able to go home and come back.

“It can really knock the mares about in particular and last time she came out of winter in England she got back to 40 degree conditions in Australia. By the same token, when she left three and a half weeks before Royal Ascot, she had a winter coat on her an inch long then arrived into 32 degree heat.

“We didn’t have her right for Royal Ascot last year because of that, so we thought if we’re going to have a stab at it we’d leave her over there.”

Dwyer said the different preparation was also likely to result in a different programme of races, with success at her adopted home of Newmarket pinpointed as a particular ambition.

“I’d love to run her in Newmarket because being based there has been such a big part of it,” he said. “If we could win a race in Newmarket I’d be thrilled. Races like the Palace House appeal early. Five furlongs up the Rowley Mile is probably stiff enough for her but she’s got to kick off somewhere. Then maybe it’ll be the Temple Stakes again, which she ran in the first year she was there in the lead up to Ascot.

“Then she’s into the King Charles at Ascot. I think she’d have one more run after that and probably go to stud. Obviously we’d have her served southern hemisphere time, which is August 1. You could maybe go to Goodwood again, but my feeling would maybe to do something different and try to stretch her out to six furlongs in the July Cup.”

Dwyer added: “I’m pretty lucky, I reckon. I started training about ten years ago with three horses and won a Group 1 Queensland Derby [with Sonntag] four months into my training career, which was unheard of with a second-hand horse.

“Then on my first trip overseas we had a Group 1 winner at Royal Ascot. I’ve only got 45 horses in work so it’s not like we’re talking about having teams of horses going to America and Hong Kong, I’ve only got one good enough to travel. It’s a case of making hay while the sun shines.”

Patch Of Cosmo leads charge toward Four-Year-Old Classic Series

Zac Purton lauded Manfred Man’s horsemanship after Patch Of Cosmo (Super Seth) successfully returned from injury to stake a claim for the Hong Kong Classic Mile (1600m) as Akashvani (Alpine Eagle) and Emblazon (Zoustar) also showcased Four-Year-Old Classic Series credentials at Sha Tin on Sunday.

Sidelined since March, 2025 after suffering a tendon injury, Patch Of Cosmo eclipsed a classy group of rivals to win by a neck from Aerodynamics (Royal Mo) and Pope Cody (Showtime) in 1m 34.53s after jumping from barrier nine.

Rated 77 pre-race, the Super Seth (Dundeel) gelding deserves his place in the Hong Kong Classic Mile, according to Purton, who will ride Sagacious Life (Put It Back) in the first leg of the Four-Year-Old Classic Series, which also includes the Hong Kong Classic Cup (1800m) on March 1 and the Hong Kong Derby (2000m) on March 22.

“First of all, it was a really good training performance. This horse has been off from ten months with a tendon [injury] and he’s come back at the top of Class 3, carrying a lot of weight, first-up at a mile and he’s won,” Purton said. “That’s not easy to do.

“So, they want to take their place in the Four-Year-Old [Classic] Series now and he’s not going to be out of place. He’s a relatively lightly-raced horse, he’s got plenty more there.”

David Hayes was similarly positive about Akashvani after an emphatic all-the-way victory in the second section of the Class 3 Fencing Handicap (1400m) under Brenton Avdulla.

Unlucky at his previous start, the 72-rater was well supported before forging clear in the straight after angling away from the fence and winning by three lengths in 1m 21.30s from Super Express (Ten Sovereigns).

“I thought going towards the Classic Mile, it was a very, very good run. I think he'll get eight or nine points and that will probably get him in the big race,” Hayes said.

“That was his best win in Hong Kong and that was over 1400 metres and I would say he has a mile written all over him. If you look at his pedigree and racing style, I think if he draws well - he'll run a good race.

“He's very fit and he's got a nice gap now with two weeks to the race. We're very excited."

Emblazon made it three wins from six starts for Cody Mo and Chau when the 64-rater overhauled Flash Current (Derryn) in the first section of the Class 3 Fencing Handicap (1400m).

Fresh from reaching the 1,000-win milestone in Hong Kong last Wednesday, Francis Lui posted a running treble with Lucky Twin Stars (D’Argento) in the second section of the Class 4 Swimming Handicap (1400m) for Jerry Chau, Hot Delight (Too Darn Hot) in the second section of the Class 4 Cycling Handicap (1200m) under Vincent Ho and Amazing Partners (Pierata) in the first section of the Class 4 Swimming Handicap (1400m) for Ho.

Both Lui and Ho were impressed with the effort of Too Darn Hot (Dubawi) three-year-old Hot Delight.

“He drew [barrier] 14, so that made things a bit harder but luckily it was the ‘A course’ and even though he was three-wide, we knew he was a nice horse,” Ho said. “He did everything right, so looking forward to the next start and hopefully he can learn more, stay calm and improve.”

Lui said: “He's a good horse. I like him a lot. The owner [Peter Law], always buys a good horse and he can spend to buy a good one. I wasn't involved in buying him – I have known Mr Law for a long time and he met me and said 'do you want to train my horse?' Of course, I said yes.

“When he came to me, he was very green, but a very strong horse and his barrier trials were good.”

Jamie Richards slotted a double when City Gold Banner (Starspangledbanner) swept to victory under Zac Purton in the Class 3 15th National Games Hong Kong Medallists Cup Handicap (1000m), clocking 56.83s in defeating fellow Hong Kong debutant The Unique Star (Shalaa).

Formerly trained by Gerald Ryan & Sterling Alexiou in Australia, the Starspangledbanner (Choisir) gelding was ridden patiently by Purton before extending impressively over the final 400 metres to earn a PP Bonus of HK$1.5 million (approx. AU$287,750).

Richards also struck when three-year-old Cool Boy (Per Incanto) prevailed in the first section of the Class 4 Cycling Handicap (1200m) for James Orman.

“He's been racing well, I thought it was a good effort considering he had to carry 135lb,” Richards said. “He was aided by a beautiful ride from James, who's riding really well.”

Dylan Browne McMonagle slotted his first winner in Hong Kong when he piloted John Size-trained Flow Water Flow (Proisir) to victory in the Class 4 Triathlon Handicap (1600m).

“Very happy and it’s a great place to be competing. I’ve been very lucky, I’ve been getting on some nice horses in the last few weeks. I’ve been getting plenty of support and massive thanks to John Size. He’s been extra special, he’s been throwing a lot at me and thankfully I can reward him with a winner,” the Irishman said.

“He [Flow Water Flow] had a really good record coming into this race. He’d been hitting the crossbar [with three seconds] in his first three starts. Stepping up to 1600 metres was going to be a big help to him today and he was good and strong the last 100 metres – thankfully, he got his head in front.”

Dennis Yip and Karis Teetan combined with Super Hong Kong (Kermadec) to land the Class 5 Rugby Seven Handicap (2000m). Now eight, Super Hong Kong improved his record to six wins from 58 starts and prize-money of HK$5.64 million (approx. AU$1.08 million).

Maxime Guyon and Me Tsui teamed with Pegas (Encryption) in the Class 3 Sailing Handicap (1200m). A son of Encryption (Lonhro), the gelding’s brave triumph delivered a PP Bonus of HK$1.5 million.

Hong Kong racing continues at Sha Tin with an all-dirt meeting on Wednesday night.
