Classy colt Kinnaird primed for a rich raid on the Karaka Millions

Highview Stud supremo Brent Gillovic is hoping Kinnaird can turbocharge a big weekend for the family farm when the exciting Home Affairs (I Am Invincible) colt bids to keep his unbeaten record intact in the Karaka Millions 2YO (RL, 1200m) at Ellerslie.

Kinnaird had the distinction of becoming his esteemed sire’s first Group winner when, despite showing signs of waywardness in the home straight, the colt claimed the Eclipse Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) by just over a length on New Year’s Day, with that victory seeing him instantly installed as the favourite for Saturday’s $1 million juvenile feature.

On the advice of his regular rider Opie Bosson, co-trainers Mark Walker and Sam Bergeson have applied blinkers for the first time and the new headgear has seemingly had the desired effect, as the colt reportedly completed a slick final gallop in midweek.

What's On

In conjunction with the Hong Kong Breeders Club, who have been partners in Highview for the past two decades, the Gillovic’s Waikato operation sold Kinnaird for NZ$340,000 at last year’s New Zealand Bloodstock National Yearling Sale to Te Akau Racing, whose astonishing stranglehold on the Karaka Millions 2YO has seen the ‘Tangerine Army’ win eight of the last nine editions.

Twelve months on from that trade, which would now appear another astute acquisition by Te Akau chief David Ellis, Gillovic will be trackside at Ellerlise to see if the final foal out of the farm’s proven producer Orinda (O’Reilly) can make it three wins from three outings.

Given Kinnaird’s half-brother Jon Snow (Iffraaj) won the 2017 ATC Derby (Gr 1, 2400m) and his half-sister Princess Rhaenys (Iffraaj) - now a resident broodmare at the Huddy family’s Peachester Lodge - signed off her racing career with victory in the 2024 Tattersall’s Gold Crown (Listed, 2143m), it is a touch surprising that the classy colt is sharp enough to be contesting New Zealand’s richest sprint race for juveniles.

While in no way downplaying the lofty opinion he holds of the Highview graduate, Gillovic readily concedes that he has been pleasantly surprised by the rapid rate of progress shown so early in his career.

I really liked the colt but to be honest I wouldn’t have said back then that he would have been able to do what he’s done at this stage of his career

Brent Gillovic

“I really liked the colt but to be honest I wouldn’t have said back then that he would have been able to do what he’s done at this stage of his career,” he told ANZ News.

“The scary thing is that he’s still got a lot of improvement to come, physically and mentally, so he’s only going to get better as a three-year-old. It’s a big occasion and the biggest test of his career on Saturday, because it looks like a very strong field as you would expect for a $1 million race, but from what we’ve seen so far I do think he will handle the pressure no problem.

“He’s obviously done a terrific job so far for our farm and also for Coolmore, being Home Affairs’ first Group winner. He wouldn’t want it too wet but the Ellerslie track drains particularly well now, so unless we get a downpour on raceday I can’t see it being a problem for him.”

Less than 24 hours after Kinnaird’s crack at the Karaka Millions, Highview’s sole offering in Book 1 of the 100th NZB National Yearling Sale goes up for auction at the adjacent complex.

The filly is the first foal produced by the farm’s resident broodmare Prima Donna (Super Easy), a moderate racetrack performer whose pedigree page is emboldened by her half-sister Prowess (Proisir), who was a multiple Group 1 winner for her co-trainers Roger James and Robert Wellwood before being sold for NZ$1.45 million via the online Gavelhouse Plus auction last year.

The filly’s Group 1-winning father, Highview stallion Divine Prophet (Choisir), enjoyed a very solid season in Australia last year when he punched well above his weight by producing 90 winners from his 175 runners - thereby finishing in the top 20 by that metric.

Divine Prophet’s current pin-up girl is the ultra-consistent mare Generosity, who was plucked for just $9,000 at the 2021 Magic Millions Gold Coast National Weanling Sale by Simon Miller. The Ascot horseman subsequently turned his meagre purchase into a certified money-spinner, as she claimed last year’s Sheila Gwynne Classic (Listed, 1400m) before launching from near last to run third behind Jokers Grin (Maschino) in the $5 million Quokka (1200m).

Like Jokers Grin, she has since made the journey east to join Chris Waller’s all-conquering stable, and proved she could measure up in Sydney by running third behind stellar stablemate Joliestar (Zoustar) in The Shorts (Gr 2, 1100m).

Generosity has therefore assumed the mantle previously held by Divine Prophet’s daughter See You In Heaven, who racked up multiple stakes wins before being sold to Yulong as a broodmare proposition for a seven-figure sum. In light of the success he enjoyed with See You In Heaven, it is no surprise that Adelaide trainer David Jolly has taken a very keen interest in Lot 53 and Highview’s two other Divine Prophet yearlings (Lots 599 and 679) in Book 2.

Given her dam was a winner over 2200 metres, the filly is expected to be a late bloomer and although Gillovic feels the sale may have come six months too early for her, he remains hopeful she will catch the eye of the buying bench when she enters the ring on Sunday afternoon.

“She’s a nice filly and given how well Divine Prophet has performed over there recently, we’re hoping the Australian buyers will take a close interest in her,” Gillovic told ANZ News.

“I haven’t heard a bad word said about the Divine Prophets, so that’s always pleasing. She’s quite a leggy filly so she’s still got to grow into her frame, but I’ve been told she’s in the mould of Prowess so that’s not a bad comparison. She’ll be a really lovely filly in six months’ time so this sale may have come round a little too quickly for her, but she’s definitely got potential. She’s as quiet as a mouse so she’s got the right temperament, which is typical of the breed.

“Young horses can change and develop very quickly, there’s no way we thought Kinnaird would be lining up in the Karaka Millions 12 months after we sold him, so life can be full of surprises. She’s from Divine Prophet’s first crop of New Zealand born foals, so we’ll have to be patient with him but we’re hopeful he can kick some big goals over here in time.

“He’s already shown he’s a real machine when it comes to siring winners in Australia, so hopefully that trend continues and he can attract support from breeders over here with some of their better mares. Richard Jolly had a good look at the filly and our other yearlings, he’s a big fan of the Divine Prophets and recently sold one of them to Hong Kong after a couple of decent trials, so hopefully he likes what he’s seen.”

Gillovic is perhaps more bullish about the farm’s offerings in Book 2, especially a pair of colts produced by their resident stallion Wrote (High Chaparral), the sire of New Zealand Oaks (Gr 1, 2400m) heroine Pulchritudinous who now races in Yulong’s bottle green and white colours.

Wrote, who stands at Highview’s picturesque farm on the outskirts of Hamilton for $12,000 (plus GST), has Midnight Edition going round in the Aotearoa Classic (Gr 3, 1600m) and also Imprevu lining up in the opening contest at Ellerslie, the Jo Giles Stakes (1400m).

He also produced Group 3-winning sprinter Fast Network and, in the (admittedly unlikely) event that the progressive five-year-old can bring Ka Ying Rising’s winning streak to an end in Sunday’s Centenary Sprint Cup (Gr 1, 1200m) at Sha Tin, Gillovic would expect Hong Kong interest in his progeny to go through the sales ring roof at Karaka.

“Wrote has been doing really well, particularly over in Hong Kong, so we’re hoping his yearlings will be popular,” he told ANZ News.

“He covered some fairly average mares at the start of his career so he’s had to do it the hard way, but his popularity has definitely been increasing over the last couple of years. I wish we had a lot more yearlings by Wrote to sell here this year, we have probably prioritised acquiring mares for Divine Prophet and our other resident stallion Santos, but we’ll definitely be supporting Wrote more heavily from now on given the results he’s been getting.

“I’m quite excited by some of our yearlings in Book 2, we have a beautiful filly by Divine Prophet (Lot 679) out of a mare from Sir Peter Vela’s family. She’s got one hell of a pedigree and there’s a lot of Zabeel about her.

“The two colts by Wrote are lovely, particularly Lot 846 out of Miss Motown. Our colt by Santos (660) is also a really nice type, so it’s a very solid draft overall and we’ve got a beautiful line-up of horses in next week’s Summer Sale, which is effectively the old Book 2. It will be interesting to see how we go, hopefully Kinnaird can run a big race in the Karaka Millions and then we have a successful week at the sales.”

Milan Park pay tribute to John 'JJ' Jeffs

The Milan Park barn at Karaka is missing a familiar presence this year, after the death of long-serving friend and colleague John Jeffs, who died of cancer in November aged 83.

Affectionately known as ‘JJ’, Jeffs was a much-loved figure at Milan Park, remembered for his remarkable affinity to recall names, his infectious positivity and his deep knowledge of racing and breeding. Tony Rider - owner of Milan Park - said his absence has left a noticeable void within the team.

“We are missing JJ big time,” he told ANZ News. “JJ could have 3 or 4 drafts going on at any one time, and at the same time, he could spin and talk to you. He knew where everything was.

A picture of John Jeffs 'JJ' hangs at the Milan Park consignment at Karaka (Credit: ANZ)

“He got on well with my farm manager, Grant, and with Grant out the back, and him out the front. It was just bloody awesome. He became a very good friend. Just about like an old man to me in some ways, he was very good. We used to talk often.”

Milan Park has honoured Jeffs’ contribution by placing an image of him on the wall of the barn he once managed, a daily reminder of his lasting impact on the operation.

“I get a bit emotional, I don't know how many years he's been working for me, but he didn't see it as work, and I don't see it as work. It's just, it's what you love. It's what you do.”

Rider also reflected on the loss of another close friend, Group 1-winning trainer Tony Dennis, who died in September last year, acknowledging the enduring relationship between their families.

“We lost another very good friend of ours, Tony Dennis, the family's been so loyal to me. The Dennis Brothers and we've got a photo up there of him too.

“For many years, they wouldn't do foal shares or anything, they kept it to themselves and eventually, I tried to buy one of the mares and I got up to a $1 million I've offered Tony and he said ‘it's not for sale’. He came back a day or so later and he said, I'll tell you what, we'll go 50-50 in a foal share. Ever since then, we've done a lot of business with them. They became very, very great friends, the Dennis Brothers.”

First for Banquo

Banquo (Credit: Waikato)

Waikato Stud resident Banquo (Written Tycoon) registered his first winner on Friday when the Kris Shailer-trained Justin Case (2 g ex Do Ra Mi, by Savabeel) broke his maiden in the Entain/NZB Insurance Pearl Series (1100m) at Matamata. Raced by breeder Waikato Stud in partnership with Jamie Beatson’s Ohukia Lodge, the colt showed good promise ahead of his intended tilt at the Matamata Slipper (Gr 3, 1200m) on February 14, landing the contest by 1.2 lengths with State Of Valour (Sword Of State) finishing the nearest of three rivals. Justin Case is out of Group 2 winner Do Ra Mi (Savabeel), making him a half-brother to four winners including the Group 3-placed Hanger (O’Reilly). The dam is herself a half-sister to Marju Snip (Marju), who won the 2006 Group 1 Australasian Oaks (Gr 1, 2020m), as well as Listed scorer Unique Jewellery (O’Reilly). Justin Case was originally slated for November’s NZB Ready To Run Sale before being retained to race by Waikato, where Banquo resides. The stallion’s fee was set at NZ$3,000 (plus GST) in 2025.

Stakes assignments home and away for Sharrock

Saturday is shaping to be a busy one for New Plymouth trainer Allan Sharrock, who saddles stakes runners both home and away. He will be represented at Ellerslie by Ka Ron (Hello Youmzain) in the $1 million Karaka Millions 2YO (RL, 1200m), with the promising juvenile having impressed in both of his starts to date. The gelding finished runner-up behind subsequent Group 2 winner and Karaka Millions 2YO favourite Kinnaird (Home Affairs) on debut at Ōtaki, before filling the same position at Ellerslie on Boxing Day behind exciting filly Te Encuentro (Frankel). Sharrock has been pleased with Ka Ron’s progression, and while disappointed with his outside barrier draw in 15, he is relishing the expected heavy rain. “He has ticked all the boxes, so other than the draw we are happy with where we are,” he said. “They’re talking about a bit of rain, so we could be in the right place. He’s a genuine racehorse. I think we’re better than a rough chance.” At home, Sharrock will saddle Bridal Train (U S Navy Flag) in the Taranaki Cup (Gr 3, 1800m) and Kingsbrook Diva (Maurice) in the Oaks Prelude (Listed, 1800m). Bridal Train has won two of her last three and will carry just 53 kilograms when she takes on multiple Group 1 winner El Vencedor (Shocking). “She’s flying,” Sharrock said. “Whether El Vencedor runs…I don’t think they are that happy with the conditions. I would probably like a little bit better too. We have got 53 kilos and I think she’s a good each-way play. We’re still trying to work out Kingsbrook Diva. We have put blinkers on her and she wouldn’t be the roughest chance.”

Birchley eyes Millions win

Queensland-based trainer Liam Birchley is set to chase another major juvenile prize in Saturday’s $1 million Karaka Millions 2YO. Birchley will saddle Dream Roca (El Roca) and Vanzadee (Vanbrugh) in the contest, with the pair costing just $101,000 combined at last year’s NZB National Yearling Sale. Dream Roca was secured for $75,000, while Vanzadee was purchased for $26,000. “It’s worked out well. They have qualified their way in, and I think both are up to the challenge,” Birchley told Racing.com. Birchley said Karaka continues to suit his long-held buying philosophy. “I’m not one for spending a lot of money on yearlings. I’m more of an athlete-type person. The pedigree tells you what you have to pay for them. I normally buy modestly-bred horses but try to buy athletes. Over the years it’s stood me in good stead. We’re back again and hoping for the best.” Dream Roca has drawn ideally in barrier one with Ben Thompson aboard, while Vanzadee faces a tougher task from gate 12 under Angela Jones. “I think they’re definitely competitive enough,” Birchley said. “One has drawn extremely well, one hasn’t. They are both in great shape, travelled over well and we are hoping for the best." Already a two-time winner of the Karaka Millions 2YO, the trainer expects a genuinely run race. “We won’t be spending too much petrol. Get a nice run off the pace and work things out over that,” he said. Vanzadee’s wide draw adds complexity. “From that gate you have to go forward or back. We will have to work out how much actual pace we think there is and where she’s best placed.”

Te Akau aim three at juvenile feature

Te Akau Racing is again set to play a central role in Saturday’s Karaka Millions twilight meeting at Ellerslie.

La Dorada (Credit: Race Images)

The leading stable has dominated the Karaka Millions 2YO in recent years, winning eight of the past nine editions, and will be represented this year by unbeaten Group 2 winner Kinnaird (Home Affairs), Out Of The Blue (Tivaci) and Zaharias (Super Seth).

“I am really excited to have three nice chances in a race we find very special,” said Sam Bergerson, who trains in partnership with Mark Walker.

“Kinnaird is leading the charge. He ticks a lot of boxes, but it is a two-year-old race and a lot can happen. The other two have performed really well. The more you throw at Out Of The Blue the more he thrives. Zaharias didn’t have a lot of luck [when third at Ellerslie last time], his work with Kinnaird on Tuesday was really good.”

Te Akau will also field a strong hand in the $1.5 million Karaka Millions 3YO (RL, 1600m) – for which Yulong’s unbeaten filly Well Written (Written Tycoon) is the hot favourite – with the Tangerine set to be represented by Group 1 winner La Dorada (Super Seth), who won the juvenile feature on the corresponding card 12 months ago, and Auckland Guineas (Gr 2, 1400m) runner-up He Who Dares (Snitzel).

“Well Written is the benchmark but it was fantastic to see La Dorada bounce back to form [when winning the Group 2 Levin Classic last start],” Bergerson said. “He Who Dares showed he is up to the mark. The mile at Ellerslie looks ideal.”

Both horses are viewed as leading candidates for the $4 million NZB Kiwi (Listed, 1500m) in March.

Meanwhile, Group 1 performer Belle Cheval (Savabeel) headlines five Te Akau runners in the Almanzor Trophy (Gr 2, 1400m) and she will be joined by King’s English (Snitzel), In Haste (Snitzel), To Bravery Born (Snitzel) and Drops Of God (Hello Youmzain).

“Belle Cheval is really exciting and is only going to continue to improve,” Bergerson said. “Saturday we think is short of her best, but she has the talent to be very competitive.

“King’s English continues to get better and better and his win was really good at Ellerslie on Sunday and he has gone the right way. In Haste had a good freshen-up and trialled well in a Group and Listed trial. She just peaked on her run but has taken good improvement.

“To Bravery Born had a quiet trial. The fresher the better seems to be his formula and he has drawn a nice gate [one]. It is hard to fault Drops Of God’s form line. She is still quite raw and does a little bit wrong and gets a bit keen, but it should be a high-pressure race and if she is to have luck from that barrier [13], we think she is more than capable.”

Lindsay Park well represented at Ellerslie

First-time New Zealand travellers Arkansaw Kid (Harry Angel) and Torture (Sword Of State) will fly the flag for Lindsay Park at Ellerslie on Saturday. Set to be ridden by Opie Bosson, Arkansaw Kid will contest Saturday’s Sistema Railway (Gr 1, 1200m) having earned his spot with a win in September’s Bobbie Lewis (Gr 2, 1200m) at Flemington before placings in the Meteorite (1200m) and Supernova (1400m). “He has a great record and this preparation he’s only been out of the top three once,” Ben Hayes, who trains in partnership with brothers Will and JD. “He loves wet tracks so that will be in his favour as well. Jigsaw beat him fair and square [in the Meteorite] and Alabama Lass has been running to very high levels so we really respect those horses, but a wet track would bring ours into it.” If Arkansaw Kid performs to expectations, he is set to remain in New Zealand for the BCD Group Sprint (Gr 1, 1400m) at Te Rapa on February 7. Lindsay Park took out the Group 1 contest last year with Here To Shock (Shocking), who has again crossed the Tasman to line up for the race. “He travelled well and he’s absolutely thriving,” Hayes said of Here To Shock. “He’s a pretty straight forward horse and is very genuine.” Meanwhile, Debutant Stakes (Listed, 1000m) winner Torture lines up in the Karaka Millions 2YO. The filly will attempt to give the stable a breakthrough Karaka Millions result after Hello Romeo’s (Hello Youmzain) midfield finish last year. “She is a little bit better than him, she’s a stakes winner,” Hayes said. “She’s spot on to run a nice race from a good barrier [five].”

Yulong snaps up classy Ohope Wins

Ohope Wins (Credit: Race Images)

Yulong Investments have strengthened their New Zealand presence with the purchase of Sir Patrick Hogan Stakes (Gr 2, 2000m) winner Ohope Wins (Ocean Park). Zhang Yuesheng’s operation has been active in targeting elite three-year-old fillies this season and already hold a major hand through unbeaten Group 1 winner Well Written, the dominant favourite for Saturday’s $1.5 million TAB Karaka Millions 3YO at Ellerslie. The Stephen Marsh-trained filly also heads betting for the $4 million NZB Kiwi in March, while the acquisition of Ohope Wins adds further Classic depth to Yulong’s local portfolio. Bred by Gartshore Bloodstock, the daughter of Ocean Park (Thorn Park) impressed when storming home to win the Sir Patrick Hogan Stakes on New Year’s Day, elevating her into favouritism for next month’s New Zealand Oaks (Gr 1, 2400m) and prominent Derby calculations. Trained by Lance O’Sullivan and Andrew Scott at Wexford Stables, the filly will remain in New Zealand through the major autumn features. “It is good to see them wanting to be a part of the racing down here as well and not just Australia,” O’Sullivan said. “She stamped herself as a staying three-year-old…she is progressive and she is only going to keep getting better.” Ohope Wins carried Yulong’s colours for the first time in a Matamata trial on Friday, pleasing her trainers. “She trialled beautifully, I couldn’t be happier,” O’Sullivan said.

31 for Spirit Of Boom

Liquor (6 m ex Luqyaa by Exceed And Excel) became the 31st individual stakes winner for Eureka Stud’s Spirit Of Boom (Sequalo) after she produced a dominant front-running victory in Friday night’s Goldmarket (Listed, 1100m) at the Gold Coast. Prepared by Queensland’s champion trainer Tony Gollan, the six-year-old mare was the outsider of four runners but took full advantage of gate two when leading throughout under jockey Emily Lang. Turning for home, Liquor kicked clear and proved too strong late, scoring by 1.2 lengths over Metalart (Better Than Ready), who charged through the field for second. Manolo Bling (Grunt) held third, another 0.6 lengths away. The win lifted Liquor’s record to ten wins and two seconds from 23 starts, with earnings of $558,775. The mare was purchased for $300,000 by Black Soil Bloodstock, John Foote Bloodstock and Gollan Racing from the Milburn Creek draft at the 2021 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale. Bred by John Warren’s Highclere Stud, Liquor is the second stakes winner from two runners out of the dual stakes-placed Exceed And Excel (Danehill) mare Luqyaa, joining Group 3 winner Tannhauser (Dundeel). Her Listed success provides an immediate pedigree update for her Anamoe (Street Boss) half-brother, who sold for $850,000 at Magic Millions last week to the bid of Michael Freedman, MyRacehorse and Belmont Bloodstock. Luqyaa has since foaled a Toronado (High Chaparral) filly and was covered by four-time Group 1 winner Broadsiding (Too Darn Hot) in his first season at Darley’s Kelvinside base.

Hedged takes the Australia stakes in record time

Gavin Bedggood was rewarded for persevering with Hedged (5 g Capitalist - Acing Shamrock by Fastnet Rock) after the gelding bounced back from disappointment to claim victory in Friday’s Australia Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) at Pakenham in record time. Hedged had failed to fire at his previous start in the Standish Handicap (Gr 3, 1200m) at Flemington on January 10, prompting jockey Harry Coffey to suggest a spell. Bedggood, however, elected to press on to Friday’s Group 2. The son of Capitalist (Written Tycoon) rebounded to defeat Veight (Grunt) by two lengths, with odds-on favourite War Machine (Harry Angel) finishing third, another 1.5 lengths back. He clocked 1:07.58 seconds for the 1200 metres, setting a new track record at Pakenham. “We just wanted to keep it simple and ride him where he was happy,” Coffey said. “When the field broke up, I was able to get to the outside. He grabbed the bridle and he was a different horse. He is so much happier outside of horses compared to being bustled up on the inside.” The last-start disappointment followed a return when Hedged claimed the Christmas Stakes (Listed, 1200m) at Sandown. “When this Hedged turns up, he is a serious horse,” stable representative Darryl Horner said. “Gavin is convinced that he is a Group 1 horse [but] he is a bit of a headscratcher now. He’s been good all prep… and this is a big thing for a small stable.” The race was marred by the injury to outsider Cannonball (Capitalist), who suffered a catastrophic injury near the 500-metre mark and was humanely euthanised.

Sandpaper heads Baker’s Carrington trio

Sandpaper (Credit: Racing Photos)

Bjorn Baker believes Sandpaper (Snitzel) can rebound at Randwick following a short and sharp Queensland campaign that failed to deliver a win. The six-year-old showed solid form two starts back when runner-up to Know Thyself (The Autumn Sun), before sticking on for sixth behind Needs Some Luck (Rubick) in the Magic Millions Buffering (1400m) at Eagle Farm on January 3 after being pressured while leading. The gelding will again face a strong line-up in Saturday’s Carrington Stakes (Listed, 1400m), but Baker is confident his condition will hold him in good stead. “His run was better than it looked last time,” Baker said. “It's a tough race but he's going well. He looks great and he's rock-hard fit.” Sandpaper is one of three runners Baker will saddle in the Carrington, alongside resuming pair War Eternal (Pierro) and Thunderlips (Zoustar). A drying surface is not ideal for that pair, though Thunderlips benefits from a three-kilogram weight swing on last-start conqueror Whinchat (Russian Revolution). “He will probably need it, but he can show up once he gets fit and he looks well at the moment,” Baker said of Thunderlips. “War Eternal, he often takes a run or two and if there is any cut, it will help him. Same with Thunderlips. Thunderlips has just got an awkward gate, so we'll see how we go there, but we're in there with a show.” Whinchat heads betting at $3.30, with Sandpaper and War Eternal quoted at $10 and Thunderlips an $18 chance.

Pride puts his faith in Gatsby’s

Joe Pride has welcomed a change in fortunes at the barrier draw as he looks to help Gatsby’s (Snitzel) end an 18-month winless run at Randwick on Saturday. A winner of The Rosebud (Listed, 1100m) in 2024 when trained by Chris Waller, the four-year-old gelding has placed twice at black-type level since but has been unable to return to the winner’s stall. Gatsby’s finished midfield from a wide gate at his first start for Pride earlier this month and will be better drawn in barrier three for Saturday’s Racing And Sports Handicap (1200m). “I have been really happy with him,” Pride said. “His run was solid the other day from a bad gate. I was going to run him last Saturday, but he had another bad gate and a heavy track, so I kept him at home.” While Gatsby’s has traditionally performed well fresh, Pride said he prefers not to be guided too heavily by a horse’s previous patterns when they arrive at the stable. “Whenever I get a new horse to the stable, I look at their form, but I try not to read too much into what they've done in the past,” he said. “At the end of the day, they're in a different environment, being trained differently, fed differently, possibly even ridden differently. I don't want to fall into too many traps. You just judge them off what you see and from what I can see he is coping really well so I'm happy to send him back to the races.” Chad Schofield will ride Gatsby’s, who is rated a $7.50 chance in an open betting contest.

Way To The Stars set for Group 1 audition

Matthew Smith believes a strong performance from Way To The Stars (Reward For Effort) at Caulfield on Saturday could open the door to a Group 1 tilt later in the autumn. The seven-year-old gelding lines up in the W.J. Adams Stakes (Listed, 1000m), with Smith weighing up the Caulfield option over a potential start in Friday night’s Goldmarket (Listed, 1100m) at the Gold Coast. “We’ve taken the harder option but the draw at the Gold Coast and with the speed in the race I could see him caught wide,” Smith said. “So we have chosen to take the race with the better barrier.” Way To The Stars will jump from barrier three and is no stranger to high-level sprinting, having won the Century Stakes (Listed, 1000m) at Flemington during the 2024 Melbourne Cup Carnival. His only previous Caulfield appearance resulted in a rearward finish in the Caulfield Sprint (Gr 2, 1000m), where circumstances worked against him. Most recently, he finished second in the Bribie Handicap (Listed, 1000m) at Eagle Farm. “There isn't an easy sequence of races for him at this time of year but I thought the Brisbane race was perfect first-up,” Smith said. “But if he can get around Caulfield then there are other options further into the carnival like the Oakleigh Plate (Gr 1, 1100m). Beast Mode has speed and if he can sit off them, he may be a chance.” Way To The Stars was rated a $7 chance on Friday, with Beast Mode the $3.10 favourite.

Zou Sensation hones on Listed win

Zou Sensation (Zoustar) will again be put to the test at Caulfield on Saturday as the evergreen gelding continues a preparation that has now stretched beyond 12 months. Trained by Leon and Troy Corstens and Will Larkin, the six-year-old closed out 2025 with victory in the Kensington Stakes (Listed, 1400m) at Flemington on New Year’s Eve and lines up again in Saturday’s John Dillon Stakes (Listed, 1400m). Zou Sensation boasts an excellent Caulfield record, with three wins from five starts at the venue since May. “We can't fault him,” Larkin said. “If there were any faults from his last start to now, he'd be in the paddock but the true warrior that he is, he keeps copping everything we throw at him and he came through the run really well. His gallop work has been super and he was nice and fresh down at the beach this week. I can't see why he can't hold the form.” Zou Sensation has firmed in betting from $3.90 into $2.90 and will again be partnered by Jamie Melham, carrying 59 kilograms. “He just loves his racing and we just keep things simple with him sending him up the farm between runs where he gets his head down the paddock,” Larkin said. “I think he can carry the weight.”

Fresh Sghirripa set for Durbridge

Sghirripa (Credit: Racing Photos)

Shane Oxlade cannot fault Sghirripa (Lonhro) heading into Saturday’s Durbridge Stakes (Listed, 1100m) at Morphettville. The 2024 Standish Handicap (Gr 3, 1200m) winner has been freshened since an underwhelming Melbourne campaign late in the spring and will look to reset in his home state with an eye on Adelaide’s summer and autumn sprint features. Oxlade, who trains in partnership with daughter Cassie, said the gelding’s spring form was difficult to explain. “He certainly disappointed,” Oxlade said. “I just don't think he was interested, to be honest. He's been home and had a freshen up and he's jumped out really well. But I couldn't fault him going into the other runs, sometimes you wish you had an excuse.” Sghirripa led throughout in a 900-metre Strathalbyn heat on January 15, finishing ahead of fellow Durbridge contender Prairie Flower (Star Turn). Oxlade believes the gelding’s reset could set him up for a productive local campaign. “We've got the carnival at home,” Oxlade said. “There are races over the border that are always there, but his ratings come back a bit now, then in a month's time you've got the City Of Marion. And by then you're starting to run into our carnival, the Irwin Stakes, the D C McKay and then into The Goodwood. From my point of view, it's about getting him back to racing like I know he can. I'm really happy with him. We'll know more on Saturday where he is.” Sghirripa is rated a $7.50 chance for the Durbridge Stakes, with Campbell Rawiller to ride from barrier seven.

Manaal’s half-sister breaks her maiden

Michael Freedman’s well-related filly Rajwa (I Am Invincible), a half-sister to Sires’ Produce Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) winner and stablemate Manaal (Tassort), opened her account at Canterbury on Friday night, holding on late to score a narrow maiden victory for owner-breeders Emirates Park. Having finished fourth on debut in August, the three-year-old was required to dig deep under jockey Andrew Adkins and proved strongest close to the line, edging clear to win by 0.3 lengths over Premium (Xtravagant). Avon Calling (Farnan) finished 3.1 lengths further away in third. Rajwa is the third foal and third winner from the US-bred Listed winner Red Lodge (Midshipman), herself a half-sister to Listed winner Good Like Magic (Good Magic). The mare’s yearling, a colt by Justify (Scat Daddy), was sold at the recent Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale for $400,000 to Kennewell Racing, Group 1 Bloodstock and Ridgeport. Red Lodge missed to Tassort (Brazen Beau) last spring and has since been covered by Extreme Choice (Not A Single Doubt).

MRC appoints Michael Suey as head of racecourses

Melbourne Racing Club (MRC) has appointed respected track manager Michael Suey as its new head of racecourses, overseeing track operations at Caulfield, Sandown and Mornington. A long-serving MRC employee, Suey has played a key role in the recent improvement of the club’s racing surfaces, particularly throughout 2025, following the engagement of external consultants and agronomists to enhance maintenance practices and implement a revised track strategy aligned with industry best practice. Club CEO Tanya Fullarton said improving track performance has been a central focus since her appointment.
“Since I joined the MRC, improving the performance of our tracks has been a clear priority,” Fullarton said. “Our objective is to ensure MRC racecourses deliver among the best track surfaces in Australia, underpinned by strong internal leadership and external best-practice expertise.” Following the spring, an interim renovation was completed at Caulfield to support consistent performance through the 2026 season. A more comprehensive refurbishment is scheduled to take place after the 2026 Caulfield Cup (Gr 1, 2400m), with the track expected to re-open in early 2027. Similar long-term refurbishment programs are planned for Sandown in late 2028, followed by Mornington in 2029.

HK: Voyage Bubble braced for Romantic Warrior challenge

Voyage Bubble and Romantic Warrior (Credit: HKJC)

Zac Purton believes Voyage Bubble (Deep Field) will need to reproduce the full measure of his December heroics if he is to successfully defend his Stewards’ Cup (Gr 1, 1600m) at Sha Tin on Sunday, when he again clashes with global superstar Romantic Warrior (Acclamation). Voyage Bubble dug deep to claim the Hong Kong Mile (Gr 1, 1600m) last month, fending off a determined challenge from Japanese raider Soul Rush (Rulership) after briefly looking beaten in the final stages. “I think everyone thought he was beaten at the 100 metres,” Purton said. “Soul Rush had a tough run and Voyage Bubble finished it off strongly. It was a good win.” That effort will need to be matched against the Danny Shum-trained Romantic Warrior, the world’s highest-earning racehorse with HK$240.1 million in prize-money and 11 Group 1 victories. Romantic Warrior has not lost a Group 1 on Hong Kong soil since the 2023 Champions & Chater Cup (Gr 1, 2400m). Sunday’s Stewards’ Cup is the opening leg of the Hong Kong Triple Crown, followed by the Hong Kong Gold Cup (Gr 1, 2000m) on March 1 and the Champions & Chater Cup on May 24. Voyage Bubble completed the Triple Crown in 2024/25, becoming only the second horse after River Verdon (Be My Native) to do so. While Voyage Bubble’s mile-specialist credentials are seen as a potential advantage, Purton is under no illusions. “Romantic Warrior’s got so much natural speed that he could put himself anywhere,” Purton said. “He’s clearly a better horse. So we need to find a way to beat him.”

64 for Dubawi

Darley’s brilliant marquee stallion Dubawi (Dubai Millennium) supplied his 64th individual Group 1 winner courtesy of Imperial Emperor’s (6 g ex Zhukova by Fastnet Rock) victory in Friday’s Al Maktoum Challenge (Gr 1, 1900m) at Meydan. The Bhupat Seemar-trained six-year-old beat Tumbarumba (Oscar Performance) by a length and a quarter with a further three and three-quarter lengths back to Heart Of Honor (Honor A P) in third. Bred by Godolphin, Imperial Emperor is out of Grade 1 winner Zhukova (Fastnet Rock), herself a daughter of Irish 1,000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1m) winner Nightime (Galileo), who is also the dam of Darley’s multiple Group 1-winning champion and now resident sire Ghaiyyath (Dubawi). Dubawi is standing at Dalham Hall in Newmarket for a fee of £350,000 (approx. £691,725).

144 for Sea The Stars

Elnajmm (6 ex Muneyra by Dubawi) sprang a surprise to win Friday’s Al Fahidi (Gr 3, 1400m) at Meydan and in the process provided Sea The Stars (Cape Cross) with his 144th individual stakes winner. Trained by Australian-born Michael Costa, the six-year-old dug deep in the closing stages to beat Chicago Critic (Night Of Thunder) by a short-head. Tumbler (Kingman) finished a further three-quarters of a length away in third. Bred by Godolphin, the Sheikh Ahmed Al Maktoum-owned gelding is out of winning mare Muneyra (Dubawi), a sister to multiple Group 1-winning champion Lucky Nine. Sea The Stars is standing for a career-high fee of €300,000 (approx. AU$513,350).

UAE: Cover Up takes the Blue Point Sprint

The Simon and Ed Crisford-trained Cover Up (Exceed And Excel) made it back-to-back stakes wins over course and distance when he landed Friday’s Blue Point Sprint (Gr 2, 1000m) at Meydan as the 9/5 favourite. Ridden by William Buick, the son of Exceed And Excel (Danehill) was switched left and made rapid headway in the final 200 metres to overhaul Echo Point (Dubawi) by a length, with Ponntos (Power) finishing another length and three quarters away in third. A last-start winner of the Dubai Dash (Listed, 1000m) – which he also landed in 2025 – Cover Up went two better in the Group 2 having finished third in the race last year behind West Acre (Mehmas) and Ponntos.

NZ National Yearling Sale celebrates 100 years

Part 2 of Lloyd Jackson’s three-part series to mark a century of selling for New Zealand’s auction house

Lloyd Jackson

The champion graduates

For the Centenary Sale, New Zealand Bloodstock recognised the importance of their best advertisements, namely the Best Performed graduates, by publishing a catalogue profiling the best performer from each of the 99 sales, and what a list it is. At least 20 graduates comfortably rate as out-and-out champions and any would be worthy of a detailed history. However, there are a select few graduates who rose to the dizziest of heights.

Phar Lap (Night Raid) was the subject of a feature-length movie. A number of books were published about his life as were thousands of articles. His story is almost a fairy tale, except for his tragic ending.

Purchased for 160gns from the 1928 National Sale by Hugh Telford on behalf of his brother, battling Sydney-based trainer, New Zealander Harry Telford, Phar Lap was shunned by his owner David Davis who took one look at the gangly, wart covered colt and immediately disowned him. Telford, however, had faith in Phar Lap and leased him for three years.

He took five starts to break his maiden at two but at three blazed his way through wins in the Rosehill Guineas, the AJC Derby and the Victoria Derby before finishing third in the Melbourne Cup. The following autumn he reeled off nine successive wins.

As a four-year-old he landed the WS Cox Plate and, after an assassination attempt, the Melbourne Cup, as part of a 14 win sequence. Telford’s lease from Davis expired at the end of the 1930-31 season but Phar Lap kept the wins coming, scoring eight in succession including his second Cox Plate before a gallant eighth under 10st 10lbs in the 1931 Melbourne Cup, his last race in Australia.

Phar Lap (Credit: NZB)

Telford was against accepting an invitation to the rich Agua Caliente Handicap in Tijuana, Mexico but was overruled by Davis and after an arduous sea journey, plus a 500 mile float trip from San Francisco, Phap Lap arrived in Tijuana with a cracked hoof only to be faced with racing on dirt for the first time.

As champions do, he rose to the occasion, led by four lengths rounding into the straight then beat off a couple of challenges to win convincingly by two lengths, the last of his 37 wins from 51 starts. Sixteen days later he was dead from a chronic case of colic. The fairy tale was over but the legend lives on and Phar Lap remains as perhaps the greatest performer to emerge from New Zealand. Champions following Phar Lap were always compared to him and two that challenged Phar Lap’s status were Rising Fast (Alonzo) and Tulloch (Khorassan).

Rising Fast emerged from the 1951 National Sale at a cost of 325gns, his early racing in New Zealand. After an open handicap win at Te Rapa there was controversy when Rising Fast was adjudged to have not run on his merits in the Te Awamutu Cup resulting in suspensions for the trainer and jockey. Under a new trainer he landed the Group 3 Queen Elizabeth Plate and the crowd erupted. Another inquiry saw Rising Fast disqualified for 12 months but this was subsequently overturned. Rising Fast's target was the Auckland Cup and HM The Queen, on her first tour of the country, was scheduled to attend Ellerslie but the authorities were fearful of a riot should Rising Fast win.

Sent to Brisbane, as a five-year-old Rising Fast won a Listed race in August then the Group 2 John F Feehan Stakes at Moonee Valley in September. That October he was totally supreme, scoring the Group 2 Turnbull Stakes on the 2nd, the Group 1 Caulfield Stakes on the 13th, the Group 1 Caulfield Cup on the 16th, the Cox Plate on the 23rd and the Group 1 LKS Mackinnon Stakes on the 30th. Under 9st 5lbs in the Melbourne Cup he made it six successive wins when taking the lead at the furlong and was never in danger thereafter.

Rising Fast (Credit: NZB)

Rising Fast took out the Caulfield Cup at six and almost completed the double-double when running an unlucky second in the Melbourne Cup. Owner Leicester Spring declined to protest even though interference by the winner was significant. When retired, Rising Fast had accumulated 24 wins including 18 stakes races, seven of which were Group 1s.

The legend Tulloch was purchased on spec by Sydney-based trainer Tommy Smith and was the last of his 1956 sale purchases to find an owner, partly due to Tulloch’s conformation. Despite a noticeably sway-back, Smith gambled 750gns on the colt.

As a juvenile he won seven of his 13 starts. After taking out the Group 1 VRC Sires’ Produce Stakes, he shocked the racing world by defeating the brilliant and unbeaten Todman (Star Kingdom) by two lengths in the Group 1 AJC Sires' Produce Stakes. Todman was a last-start winner of the inaugural Golden Slipper Stakes.

Tulloch's three-year-old season was one to behold, winning in succession the Group 2 Warwick Stakes, Group 1 Rosehill Guineas and Group 1 AJC Derby by six lengths, the Group 1 Caulfield Guineas by eight lengths, Caulfield Cup in Australasian record time and the Victoria Derby by eight lengths. Smith wanted to start in the Melbourne Cup which appeared at his mercy but owner Haley would not hear of racing a three-year-old over two miles. Fellow three-year-old Prince Darius (Persian Book), beaten by eight lengths in Tulloch’s facile Victoria Derby stroll, did start in the Cup and ran second.

Tulloch (Credit: NZB)

Tulloch completed 1957 with the Group 1 Queensland Derby by seven lengths and the following autumn reeled off six in a row including both Group 2 St Legers and three Group 1s, culminating with Randwick’s Queen Elizabeth Stakes. A stomach virus kept him off the scene for two years but in the autumn of 1960 he added five more stakes including his second Queen Elizabeth Stakes. As a six-year-old his 19 starts included ten wins, featuring the Cox Plate, the Mackinnon Stakes and the Queen Elizabeth Stakes for a third time. Lumbered with 10st 1lb he was seventh in the Melbourne Cup. His magnificent career totalled 36 wins of which 16 were Group 1s. It's no wonder he was compared with Phar Lap.

Phar Lap, Rising Fast and Tulloch are merely three of many worthy candidates to be considered the creme-de-la-creme from the National Sale. Six graduates were highly successful beyond Australasia including three in the US. After a successful New Zealand and Australian career Cadiz (Targui) won the Group 1 Hollywood Gold Cup and The Californian. Daryl’s Joy (Stunning) headed the New Zealand two-year-olds, beat the unbeatable Vain (Wilkes) in Melbourne then took out theCox Plate. Whisked off to California he defeated the Chilean champion Cougar II (Tale of Two Cities) at Group 2 level then added the Group 1 Oak Tree Invitational, defeating another champion, Fiddle Isle (Bagdad). His record ended with 16 wins and 13 placings from 30 starts.

Happyanunoit (Yachtie) was sold to American interests after landing the Group 1 Manawatu Sires’ Produce Stakes. In California she added the time-honoured Matriarch Stakes, the Beverley Hills Handicap and the Gamely Handicap. In 20 starts she won ten including four at the elite level and was six times Group 1 placed. In Europe, Australian Derby winner Starcraft (Soviet Star) led all the way in a stunning victory in the Group 1 Prix du Moulin at Longchamp then defeated champion Dubawi (Dubai Millennium) in the Group 1 Queen Elizabeth II Stakes at Newmarket.

Also in Europe, after back-to-back Cox Plate (Gr 1) wins, So You Think (High Chaparral) proudly flew the New Zealand flag adding two Group 1 Tattersall’s Gold Cups, an Eclipse Stakes, the Irish Champion Stakes and a much treasured Royal Ascot victory in the Prince of Wales’s Stakes (Gr 1) for a total of ten career Group 1s. He died last year but not before a successful stud career.

In Hong Kong was Beauty Generation (Road To Rock) who began his racing career in Sydney as Montaigne. In Hong Kong he was an absolute superstar. At five, his eight starts produced five wins including three Group 1s. At six he was undefeated in all eight starts, which included four Group 1s and at seven won three, including his final Group 1, making eight in total, 20 career wins and the equivalent of AU$19.2 million in prize-money.

Galilee (Alcimedes) won 18 races, including four Group 1s and five Group 2s. He made history when landing the Caulfield Cup, the Melbourne Cup and the Group 1 Sydney Cup all in the same season. Although purchased by Geoff Murphy, Hyperno (Rangong), one of Bart Cummings’ 12 Melbourne Cup winners, was a true warrior who stacked up 20 wins including six Group 1s.

Claimed as the best horse ever trained by The Master, Colin Hayes, and the best he ever rode by Brent Thomson, Dulcify (Decies) will always be remembered for his explosive burst before reaching the short home straight when bolting away with the Cox Plate by seven lengths. "He was like a Porsche with a turbo charger," said Thomson. A shattered hip during the 1979 Melbourne Cup ended a career of ten wins including six Group 1s.

Who could forget the fabulous Randwick miler Super Impose (Imposing), the Best Performer from the 1986 Diamond Jubilee Sale. From five to eight years Super Impose owned Randwick, scoring the 1990 and 1991 Doncaster Handicaps and the 1990 and 1991 Epsom Handicaps. At weight-for-age he scored back-to-back Group 1 Chipping Norton Stakes. Also at weight-for-age he sailed down the outer to beat a top class field in the 1992 Cox Plate, retiring with 20 career wins, including eight at elite level.

From the 1994 sale emerged Octagonal (Zabeel). Affectionately known as “Occy” he was a Group 1 winner at two but at three rose to another level. In the spring he scored the Cox Plate  but the following autumn went into overdrive, racking up four elite-level wins, namely the Canterbury Guineas, the Rosehill Guineas, the Mercedes Classic and the Australian Derby. As a spring four-year-old he added the Group 1 Underwood Stakes with a grand finale in the autumn, the Chipping Norton Stakes, the Australian Cup and a repeat in the Mercedes Classic. He retired to stud with ten Group 1s among 14 career wins.

The buyers

Importantly, buyers also showed up. As Bart Cummings once famously stated: “Prices are made by buyers, not sellers,” and he was correct because without buyers there is no sale. Cummings, along with Tommy Smith and Colin Hayes, were three of the mainstays of considerable and vital Australian support for the National Yearling Sale. Without the annual Australian buying bench the sale may not have survived.

National Sale stalwart Bart Cummings’ first sale was in 1960 and it immediately brought riches with the purchase of the outstanding performer Sometime (Summertime) whose five-year-old season included elite-level wins in the Caulfield Cup and the Caulfield Stakes, two of his 22 career wins. Cummings returned in 1964 to purchase Sometime’s close relative, Galilee, whose dam was Sometime’s half-sister. Galilee’s record is listed among the successful graduates mentioned above.

Bart Cummings (Credit: NZB)

A staunch believer in the New Zealand thoroughbred, Cummings’ visits to New Zealand saw him the leading buyer on many occasions and the "Cups King", as he became affectionately known, trained 12 Melbourne Cup winners. Six were New Zealand-bred and five were sold at Trentham or Karaka. For an Australian to be inducted into the New Zealand Racing Hall of Fame (2012) speaks volumes to the achievements, respect and influence that Cummings enjoyed.

In the era of “funny money”, when bloodstock investing became popular and public bloodstock investment companies were the latest trend, Cummings was caught when the economy cooled not too long after the 1987 stock market crashed. After the 1989 sale series he owed Wrightson Bloodstock $6.4 million and even more to Wm Inglis & Co. In order to recoup moneys already paid to vendors, the two companies joined forces for the first time since 1940 and in September of ‘89 held "The Night of the Stars" in Sydney for a fire sale comprising 67 of Cummings' yearling purchases. Wrightson Bloodstock’s Joe Walls was responsible for auctioning the Cummings’ lots purchased at Karaka the previous January.

Tommy Smith’s first sale was in 1948 and he remained very active until well into the 1990s. His annual trips to New Zealand often included visits to the studs prior to the auction. He led the buyers on several occasions and purchased hundreds of yearlings because he enjoyed great success with his sales forays, the best of which was, of course, his inspired purchase of Tulloch, mentioned above.

Colin Hayes was similarly active as one of the great triumvirate. Apart from purchasing champion Dulcify, in 1989 Hayes was the first to bid $1 million, for a colt, by Sir Tristram (Sir Ivor) from the champion mare Surround (Sovereign Edition). The bid, on behalf of Sheik Hamdan Al Maktoum, was unsuccessful as was his bid at $1.15 million.

These three were far from the only three Aussies to attend and find big winners bred and sold at the National Sale. So did Jim Shannon while Geoff Murphy had an uncanny knack of buying successfully under the radar. John Chalmers, all the way from Perth, reported to the sale for three decades and Tommy Smith’s daughter Gai was also a regular and major buyer. More recently, Duncan Ramage and Sydney-based Kiwi Chris Waller, in conjunction with Guy Mulcaster, have been very active as have John Foote and Peter Moody.

Of the New Zealanders, during the 1990s Rob McAnulty was the leading buyer on five occasions while earlier this century Graeme Rogerson was the heavy-hitter among buyers. However, the major player over the last 20 years has been Te Akau Racing’s David Ellis who has been the biggest spender for 17 of those 20 years. That statistic spells complete dominance among buyers. Further New Zealanders to make their mark are Paul Moroney, Bruce Perry, Albert Bosma (Go Racing), Dean Hawthorne and Phill Cataldo.

The vendors

As previously mentioned, George Currie and his Koatanui Stud were foundational to the early success of the National Sale and courtesy of his stallion Limond (Desmond) combined with the offspring of Hall of Fame Broodmare Eulogy (Cicero) plus her daughters and granddaughters. Koatanui Stud, who sold eight of the first ten sale-toppers, held sway for the first dozen or so years and could be found among the leading vendors by average as late as 1954.

Seton Otway and Trelawney Stud made their entrance during the late 1930s. Due to the great success of their extraordinary champion stallion Foxbridge (Foxlaw) and later Alcimedes (Alycidon), Trelawney took command among the vendors and remained at or near the pinnacle through until the mid 1970s leading the vendors’ aggregate on 14 occasions. Alton Lodge Stud took out five titles during the 1950s while during the 1970s Ra Ora Stud headed the aggregate four times, three in succession from 1970 to 1972 due to their Sovereign Edition (Sovereign Path). Te Parae Stud achieved three titles.

None of the aforementioned vendors would hold a candle to what was about to unfold from the late 1970s with the entrance of Patrick Hogan’s Cambridge Stud. Hogan led the aggregate in 1978 but from 1981, courtesy of sire sensation Sir Tristram there followed a double act in Sir Tristram’s son Zabeel, Cambridge Stud racking up a further 32 aggregate titles in succession, a truly amazing statistic.

Cambridge Stud’s spell was broken by Gordon Cunningham’s Curraghmore Stud in 2013. From 2014 Garry and Mark Chittick’s Waikato Stud, along with the help of sire Savabeel (Zabeel), began their domination of the category with seven consecutive titles until 2020, then three more in 2022, 2023 and 2024. The 2021 title went to Cambridge Stud which was by then under the ownership of Brendan and Jo Lindsay. Haunui Farm, who headed the category in 1980 also landed the 2025 title.
