‘He’s clearly very, very exciting’

Price and Kent Jnr colt set for Chairman’s date at Caulfield

Trainer Michael Kent Jnr is seeing boundless horizons for a “very exciting” colt who’s shaping as a chip off the old Bivouac (Exceed And Excel) as he takes his next step this Saturday en route to the Blue Diamond Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m).

Big Sky (Bivouac) will seek black type in Caulfield’s Chairman’s Stakes (Gr 3, 1000m), sticking to that shorter trip after his ultra-impressive debut victory in a handicap over the distance at Flemington on January 17, following two barrier trials.

Sporting Rupert Legh’s familiar navy with the gold lightning bolt - carried with distinction previously in the stable by dual Group 1-winning Yulong sire Grunt (O’Reilly) among others - Big Sky started a $2.90 co-favourite in that first start up the Flemington straight.

He had to be restrained by jockey Jordan Childs while racing off the leader’s rump amid a slow early tempo, while showing some signs of waywardness.

But once asked to sprint at the 200 metres, the colt exploded to win by 2.75 lengths from his fellow joint-favourite Mirador (Brazen Beau), Team Hayes’s Godolphin filly who he’ll meet again this weekend.

Such dynamic acceleration had Kent Jnr looking for superlatives as he previewed Big Sky’s second start - and for comparisons to the two-year-old’s sire Bivouac (Exceed And Excel).

What's On

The Darley stallion won two of his three Group 1s up the Flemington straight 1200 metres in the Newmarket Handicap and VRC Sprint Classic, along with a second up the same course and distance in the Coolmore Stud Stakes.

“Big Sky was very much like his old man on debut,” Kent Jnr told ANZ News. “Bivouac was dominant when they didn’t go overly quick, and his superior turn of foot won him races in very impressive fashion.

“Big Sky’s debut was very akin to that - a big change up, a big turn of foot. He sat there on the bridle and then exploded away, and that’s what Bivouac could do. He was awesome on his day, when he had the right race shape.

“Our colt looked like he was inclined to do a bit wrong early the other day, but when you review the sectionals, they went at a very slow gallop early. It was barrier trial speed.

“All the work was done late, and that’s what was impressive. He travelled to the 200 [metres] on the bridle, and when Jordan asked him he put three lengths on them very quickly. It was his superior turn of foot that won the race.”

Price and Kent Jnr snapped up Big Sky from the draft of breeders Eureka Stud for $140,000 on day one of Magic Millions Gold Coast last year, which is emerging as a bargain now.

At the time, Bivouac was largely unproven, midway through his initial season of runners.

Dam Zoom By (Red Dazzler) won four times from 1000 metres to 1200 metres, three of them at the Sunshine Coast, and is related to six Group 3 winners from the unraced second dam down.

You could make a lot of money if you could predict that trait in a horse, to improve from a yearling to a two-year-old, but in any case, this guy has improved enormously. Gee he’s an attractive-looking, masculine colt now, with a lot of presence. He’s a lovely horse, and he was fantastic on debut

MICHAEL KENT JNR

“We’ve had a lot of luck buying from Eureka Stud. They’re fantastic breeders,” Kent Jnr said. “This bloke wasn’t an obvious one, he went for half the sale’s average, but he was nice enough.

“He was balanced, clean, had correct limbs, moved well. He looked like he had a lot of improvement to come.

“In January last year, everyone wasn’t sure which way Bivouac was going to go. But in the last 12 months he’s sired the Golden Rose winner, and now this guy. It’s no surprise, he was such a good racehorse, a very good straight horse too with a massive change of gear. It’s no surprise he’s doing things as a stallion.”

Standing at Darley last spring for $55,000 (inc GST), Bivouac has that record-time Golden Rose (Gr 1, 1400m) winner Beiwacht on his CV, alongside two other stakes winners from 76 runners. He currently sits third on Australia’s second season sires’ table, and eighth among three-year-old sires.

In line with that “room to improve” forecast upon purchase, Big Sky has done nothing but impress his trainers since arriving.

“The way he’s developed has been remarkable,” Kent Jnr said.

“The good ones, every time you put them out in the paddock they really improve and grow. The ordinary ones never change and improve.

“You could make a lot of money if you could predict that trait in a horse, to improve from a yearling to a two-year-old, but in any case, this guy has improved enormously. Gee he’s an attractive-looking, masculine colt now, with a lot of presence. He’s a lovely horse, and he was fantastic on debut.”

Two-year-old racing has proved a fickle beast in recent seasons, with many booms earned on debut quickly lowered by unflattering follow-ups.

But Kent Jnr has reasons to believe Big Sky will land an authoritative second punch this weekend.

For one thing, he was barely extended on debut. Plus, this Saturday promises a larger field than that seven-horse affair, with 12 nominations entered.

“The fact that his first start was a very slowly run race then a dash home, it wasn’t a hard run on the horse,” he said. “Just being with the horse in the days following the race, that’s how it felt to us. When he pulled up it was like he’d just had a track gallop.

“So we’re not at all expecting a flat second run. He’s come on for the run and that sort of set up - going slowly and sprinting late - it’s an ideal platform to run well and run an improved race second-up.

“We’re looking forward to Saturday and seeing him being allowed to roll along a bit, which should allow him to race more tractably. I don’t expect them to go that slow again, since it’s a stronger race with a bigger field.

“Plus, he’s more experienced and he’s come on a lot.”

Kent Jnr said the stable had opted to run Big Sky in the Chairman’s rather than wait for the more popular lead-up to the Blue Diamond, the Blue Diamond Prelude (C&G) (Gr 3, 1100m) a week later.

“We thought one more run at 1000 metres would suit him better than stepping up to the 1100 metres,” he said. “Hopefully, there’s a bit more pace on than in his first run, and he’ll drop his head, they’ll go a bit quicker and that will let him finish off strongly.

“I’d also be very hopeful he’ll get the 1200 metres of the Blue Diamond no problem.”

Ben Melham returns to the saddle on Saturday, having ridden Big Sky in his two barrier trials this preparation before being on the Gold Coast on the day of his debut to ride Magic Millions 3YO Guineas (RL, 1400m) winner Torque To Be Sure (Shamus Award).

“Ben said since he trialed him three weeks ago until now, he’s come a long way, as you’d expect for any young two-year-old. He’s learning each day,” Kent Jnr said.

“It’s going to no doubt be harder from here on in, but he’s an exciting colt who’s going the right way, that’s for sure.”

Several rivals look set to provide that tougher assignment that Kent Jnr forecasts.

Team Hayes’s debuting filly La Gitana (Home Affairs) appears one of her Coolmore sire’s more exciting first croppers, having effortlessly won two Pakenham jump-outs this campaign.

Tony and Calvin McEvoy’s Expensive Taste (North Pacific) will also enjoy the fillies’ advantage under the set weights and penalties scale, and comes in off two Flemington jump-out victories.

And improvement can be expected from Mirador in her second outing, and from Robbie Griffiths’ colt Invincible Son (Farnan), who debuted with a third in Caulfield Heath’s rich Magic Millions VIC 2YO Classic (1100m) on December 20 before a tick-over jump-out.

Big Sky will carry a topweight of 59 kilograms under a penalty for his debut handicap victory, where he carried the same weight.

But when asked if his stable felt they had a good one on their hands, Kent said: “For sure.”

“I don’t think he beat a lot the other day, but any horse that can travel to the 200 [metres] on the bridle and win by three lengths at their first start at Flemington clearly has a lot of upside.

“He certainly looks a Group-class colt. He gives us the idea he’s going to improve in his three-year-old year, but he’s got the talent and the precocity to do it at two as well.

“So yeah, he’s clearly very, very exciting.”

Share in Say You Will fetches $30,000 on Magic Millions Digital

Say You Will (Credit: Magic Millions)

A share in recent Magic Millions The Debut (1000m) runner-up Say You Will (Pierata) has been snapped up for $30,000 by one of the country's leading racehorse owners via Wednesday’s Magic Millions Digital.

The 20 per cent share offered by Munce Racing, as agent for an international client, was purchased by Neil Werrett of Werrett Bloodstock, who held off seven other bidders.

"Absolutely thrilled with the results we achieved on the Magic Millions Digital platform this week," trainer Chris Munce said.

"The support from Magic Millions Digital was fantastic and the results really do speak for themselves. A great outcome for our owners and our stable."

Another Munce Racing offering, a 20 per cent share in Saxon Spirit (Saxon Warrior) sold for $13,000.

The top seller by price in the sale was Lord Momo (Contributer), a Western Australian maiden who sold to Perth trainer Brandon Fiore for $50,000. The son of Contributer (High Chaparral) was second at his only run to date at Bunbury in December, when he steamed home from tenth at the 400-metre mark to finish under a length behind winner Chino Bay (Maschino).

"The platform is great," Fiore said. "I love buying tried horses and the platform is so easy to use. Charlotte [Geoghegan, Magic Millions Digital sales coordinator] is a big reason why I purchased the horse.

“She originally contacted me and pitched him to me and that was probably the difference between me pushing hard to buy him or not. The team behind the platform is sensational."

Other vendors who successfully sold horses in the sale include Ciaron Maher Racing, Roll the Dice Racing and Mt Hallowell Stud.

Entries for the next Magic Millions Digital Sale (6-11 Feb) open on Thursday and close on February 4. To learn more about Magic Millions Digital or to lodge an entry click here.

First-up Canonbury task for Incognito

Incognito (Credit: Sportpix)

Incognito (Stay Inside), the current $8 second-favourite for March's Golden Slipper Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m), will make his return in Saturday’s Canonbury Stakes (Gr 3, 1100m) at Rosehill. Trained by Michael Freedman, the Stay Inside (Extreme Choice) colt created a big impression when making a winning debut in the Breeders' Plate (Gr 3, 1000m) on October 4 but has yet to be seen on the track since. A couple of very positive trials at Rosehill and Randwick this month have the colt ready to make his return this weekend. "He has certainly strengthened up a little bit, and he's still got a beautiful temperament, which is just as important," Freedman said. "I think he's come back in great order." Freedman trained Incognito's sire, Stay Inside, to land the Golden Slipper in 2021 and has the Silver Slipper (Gr 2, 1100m) and Todman Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) on his mind for Incognito. "The long-term plan would be the Canonbury into the Silver Slipper and Todman," Freedman said. "Things can change a little bit with two-year-olds, but that would be the plan at the moment."

Distance drop for Fire Star at Rosehill

Having seemingly failed to stay on his first attempt over further than 1300 metres, the Peter Snowden-trained Fire Star (Deep Field) will drop back in distance on Saturday when he lines up in the JRA Plate (Gr 3, 1200m) at Rosehill. The five-year-old gelding stepped up to 1400 metres in the Carrington Stakes (Listed, 1400m) last time out and, despite not staying, ran a fair fifth. However, Snowden feels that this weekend's drop back to 1200 metres is far more in favour. "He just struggled with the 1400 [metres]," Snowden said. "But he's such a tough bugger, I threw his name in the hat for this race, and he's come up with a good draw and no weight on his back. He's not out of it back to 1200 [metres] and he is rock-hard fit now." Fire Star has drawn barrier three in the field of eight as he bids to land a maiden stakes race, and Snowden is hoping the JRA Plate provides the perfect opportunity for Fire Star to do just that. "That's what I was counting on," Snowden said of the fact many of the better horses will be returning in the Expressway Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m). "The Expressway and those sort of races come to hand quickly and it will be a good time to give him a breather while they're around and come back towards the backend of the carnival and through the Hawkesbury and Scone races. He has run well in Listed and Group 3 races before. He is a very tough horse. Very genuine and you always get value for money with him."

Gollan hoping Zarastro lands consolation prize

Tony Gollan is hoping that three-time stakes winner Zarastro (I Am Invincible) can grab a consolation prize this weekend after having missed the Magic Millions carnival. The seven-year-old gelding was originally set to head for Magic Millions but had to bypass that after an incident on the water walker. He will instead tackle Saturday's JRA Plate at Rosehill, which will be his first race in Sydney since September 2022 when he was trained by Chris Waller. “We tried to get him ready for Magic Millions and just had a minor setback with him,’’ Gollan told Racing NSW. “It put me on the back foot as far as the carnival. I trialled him before the Magic Millions day a couple of weeks ago and wasn’t happy with him. I gave him another jump out at Deagon and he was really good so this was the logical option. He goes down in the right distance range, the right grade for him and he’s always been competitive around this grade. I’m really happy with him, he’s in good shape and I wouldn’t bring him down if I wasn’t happy with him. The 1200 metres is his key trip, he’s been vulnerable fresh up over the 1000s. His record at six furlongs to 1350 metres is probably the best record I’ve had with him. His 1000s and 1100s and his run at 1400 metres is when he’s been tested.”

Aviatress to drop back into mares’ grade

Triple stakes-winning mare Aviatress (Smart Missile) will return to racing against her own sex this Saturday when she tackles Caulfield's Geoffrey Bellmaine Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m). Trained by Richard and Chantelle Jolly, the five-year-old daughter of Smart Missile (Fastnet Rock) has had five runs this season, winning the Doveton Stakes (Listed, 1100m), placing in the How Now Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m), Christmas Stakes (Listed, 1200m) and W H Wylie Handicap (Listed, 1100m) and was also a last-start fourth in the Standish Handicap (Gr 3, 1200m). "Last start we were a little disappointed with the run she had and was a bit soft late," Jolly said. "But she ran fourth, not that far away, and if you look at Hedged, he looked to go pretty ordinary and he came out and won that race at Pakenham the other day, so that makes you feel a bit better about the run. We've been getting Good 3's at the moment and the track was pretty firm at Flemington the other day. We just feel she's a bit better if there's a bit of sting out rather than the firm track she copped the other day. She's stayed in our Flemington stable the whole way through as otherwise we would have been going backwards and forwards a bit. It makes it easier and the horses can settle in there. Flemington has certainly been an advantage for the better horses that we've got."

Big ideas set for Loud Charlie

Loud Charlie (Credit: Racing Photos)

Lloyd Kennewell has significant autumn goals in mind for Loud Charlie (Prague) after the three-year-old gelding broke his maiden at the second time of asking on Wednesday. Having run third on debut in a 1200-metre maiden at Terang, the son of Prague (Redoute’s Choice) went two places better on Wednesday as he defeated Saludar (Written Tycoon) by a length under Jamie Mott in the Thoroughbred Club Of Australia Plate (1300m), setting up bigger targets on the horizon. "I'm still not sure if he's the full version of himself yet," Kennewell said. "Does he get to an Australian Guineas, I don't know, but the C S Hayes [at Flemington on February 14] is potentially next, but I want to make sure he pulls up good first and then work out where we go with him, but he's pretty promising. I was trying to work out how he got beaten at Terang and then on Monday we saw the formline come through with Mitch Freedman's horse [Asakura] winning easily and it looks a promising horse. He [Loud Charlie] has been a work in progress and Ethan Brown did a bit of work on him and really liked him. He was meant to ride him but got suspended and Jamie was the lucky recipient of that. I think a mile in time, but I don't know how much further. He can be a little bit keen in the run, but good horses adapt, but I elected to push forward today looking for that victory."

Begg positive on Magic Time, but Royal Ascot not on agenda

Grahame Begg feels his dual Group 1-winning mare Magic Time (Hellbent) has come back better than ever, but he has revealed that she is highly unlikely to head to the UK for a trip to Royal Ascot. Speaking on The Verdict podcast, Begg said the six-year-old daughter of Hellbent (I Am Invincible) will be aimed at the William Reid Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) at Caulfield in March. “She is bigger, better and more beautiful,” Begg said. “She is a beauty. She keeps developing and is a lovely, big, strong girl now. She’ll have a nice long, steady build-up. She looks fantastic and has spelled really, really well.” On the possible trip to Royal Ascot, Begg added: “I think she probably isn’t the right horse to go there, to be truthful."

Aushorse Graduate Program begins

The 2026 Aushorse Graduate Program officially commenced on Tuesday in Victoria, welcoming ten outstanding university graduates from across Australia for the opening of the program’s two-week intensive learning block. Delivered by Thoroughbred Breeders Australia (TBA) and Aushorse, the program is designed to attract high-calibre graduates into the thoroughbred industry and provide them with a structured pathway into long-term careers across breeding, racing, wagering and allied sectors. Over the next fortnight, participants will take part in a series of lectures, workshops and behind-the-scenes industry visits with some of the sector’s leading organisations and professionals, including Tony and Calvin McEvoy, Troy Corstens from Malua and the Australian Trainers Association, Matt Hyland from the Victorian Jockeys Association, Dr Ben Mason of Crown Equine Veterinary Practice, and representatives from Stable Financial, Yulong, Swettenham, Racing Victoria and the Victoria Racing Club. The cohort will then progress into their six-week paid internships with host organisations across Australia including Racing Victoria, Entain, Magic Millions, Melbourne Racing Club, Alma Vale and Kitchwin Hills, Yulong, and others across the industry. “This program is about attracting exceptional young people into our industry and showing them the breadth of opportunity that exists across our racing and breeding industries,” Andrew Hore-Lacy, CEO of TBA and Aushorse, said. “The quality and diversity of this year’s cohort is outstanding, and it reflects the growing interest from graduates who see genuine long-term career pathways in the sector.”

Harvey to head juvenile second wave

Harvey Wallbanger (Credit: Race Images)

A week after the pick of the eligible crop did battle in the Karaka Millions 2YO (RL, 1200m), a second wave of quality juveniles are set to line up at Ellerslie in Saturday’s Colin Jillings 2YO Classic (Gr 3, 1200m). The field is headed by Harvey Wallbanger (Home Affairs), whose two starts at Ellerslie have produced a debut win in October and second place in the Eclipse Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) on New Year’s Day. In between those two races the Tony Pike-trained gelding finished second in the Counties Challenge Stakes (Listed, 1100m) at Pukekohe in late November. Pike admitted to some relief when Saturday’s Ellerslie fields were released and Harvey Wallbanger came up with barrier two. After jumping from an outside draw in the Eclipse Stakes he was ridden from the rear and in his previous start he also had to make his run wide from last. “Thankfully he’s got a draw that will allow him to be ridden where we want,” Pike said. “His last two runs have been a hard watch coming wide from the back like he did and getting beaten by horses that had cosy runs. He had a week off after the Eclipse and he’s come back well, so with a bit of luck from gate two we should see him put in the race. Rory [Hutchings, jockey] came over to gallop him on Tuesday morning and he worked well, so he’s ready.”

Thompson stable continues to build up

Flemington trainer Glen Thompson is keen to build up his stable numbers and was pleased to come away with a pair of colts by Sword Of State (Snitzel) at Tuesday’s Book 2 session of the New Zealand Bloodstock National Yearling Sales. Thompson, who trained in partnership with Mike Moroney until the legendary horseman's death in February last year, lost several of his higher-rated horses, with Ballymore Stables absorbed by Lindsay Park. But Australasian Oaks (Gr 1, 2000m) winner Benagil (Manhattan Rain) has been a headline act for Thompson's small stable alongside Flemington Group 3 winner Whisky On The Hill (Ribchester). “The stable is starting to build now. It has taken a little bit of time, but I’ve just had to be patient,” Thompson said. “I've got a fair few yearlings and two-year-olds there at the moment, so the next 12 months it should really start to pick up. I've got 18 boxes, 12 in work at the moment, so it's nice to get a few more. We have got the good mare Benagil, she has a jump out on Friday and will run in a fortnight at Flemington and we will head towards the Australian Cup. She has come back really well. It's just a shame she struck that really heavy track last run at Flemington. I think that really pulled her up.” Thompson went to $150,000 to purchase a Sword Of State colt out of the Snippetson (Snippets) mare Palace Whispers from the draft of Woburn Farm. “He’s a good strong colt,” Thompson said. “He's a pretty hot stallion at the moment. That was what I came here looking for, something a bit earlier. He definitely looks like he should be up and going early, but I guess time will tell. I couldn't get near them in Book 1, so it was good to be able to get him in the second session.”

HK: Blinkers on as Public Attention goes for Hong Kong Classic Mile

David Hayes is applying blinkers to Public Attention (Written Tycoon) for Sunday’s Hong Kong Classic Mile (1600m), a move the trainer believes will help the colt reach another gear when the Four-Year-Old Classic Series begins. Public Attention placed fifth at Group 1 level in Australia pre-import, and has made three starts in Hong Kong – finishing in the top four each time. This weekend’s contest sees him rise to a mile at Sha Tin with the addition of blinkers, which he wore to victory in last year's Eskimo Prince Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) at Randwick. The son of Written Tycoon (Iglesia) is owned by Karen Lo, who also races Cap Ferrat (Snitzel), winner of the 2025 Hong Kong Derby (2000m). Hayes said: “I think he’s been crying out for blinkers. I think he’s primed to run well in what is a really, really competitive race – probably the best this season. He has very good form in Australia. It’ll be first-time blinkers. We’ve resisted putting them on, but we’ve saved it for this race. He raced in them in Australia.”

IRE: Coolmore announce death of champion filly and top broodmare Maybe

Coolmore has announced the death of European champion two-year-old filly Maybe (Galileo). The dam of Coolmore stallion and English 2,000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1m) winner Saxon Warrior (Deep Impact) died aged 17 following a sudden illness. Coolmore manager James Mockridge said: "She was the loveliest, sweetest mare and will be greatly missed by all of those who took such great care of her during her time here." A daughter of Galileo (Sadler’s Wells) bred on the same cross as Frankel, Maybe was purchased for €340,000 at the 2010 Arqana August Yearling Sale from Croom House Stud. In an unbeaten juvenile campaign she followed up success in the Chesham Stakes (Listed, 7f) with three Group wins, culminating in the Moyglare Stud Stakes (Gr 1, 7f). One of only three mares chosen by Coolmore on their first foray into breeding to Japanese sire sensation Deep Impact (Sunday Silence) in 2013, her first foal was black-type performer Pavlenko and her second was 2,000 Guineas hero Saxon Warrior, now ensconced at Coolmore. Maybe is also responsible for Group scorer Drumroll, another by Deep Impact, and More Beautiful, a stakes-placed daughter of War Front (Danzig). Maybe’s two-year-old colt by Dubawi (Dubai Millennium) is in training in Ballydoyle, while her yearling colt by the same sire has been retained. She was rested during last year's breeding season.

Breeder David Digney could be excused for feeling some seller’s regret as the unbeaten Well Written (Written Tycoon) forges what’s shaping as a spectacular career, capped off most recently with her six-length romp in Saturday’s Karaka Millions 3YO Classic (RL, 1600m).

But he’s not taking it too badly. For overriding any misgivings about offloading the filly as a weanling for $32,500 is the knowledge this Australian-bred, New Zealand-based budding superstar - now with five wins from five attempts including a Group 1 - has been in the best of hands since he sold her, with the reasons for her cheap price prompting a slowly, slowly approach.

Digney, a Melbourne logistics businessman who’s been in the game for 25 years, has hit the jackpot by breeding his first stakes winner after sending his Sebring (More Than Ready) mare, Mozzie Monster, to the seemingly ageless Written Tycoon (Iglesia) in his first season at Yulong in 2021, when he stood for $165,000 (inc GST).

It was a well researched mating, tapping into a couple of Written Tycoon’s better nicks, but the type it produced wasn’t, shall we say, all that obvious.

“She was pretty plain, medium-sized, didn’t have a lot of bone, wasn’t overly pretty and wasn’t really muscly,” says Megan Kirsopp-Cole, who reared the filly at her Lemrac Lodge farm, west of Geelong.

Well don’t gild the lily there, Megan.

“It’s what I love about this game,” she continues. “If you went to our paddock back then and looked at the ten or 14 foals that were there, no way would you have said that she was the one. But she’s just incredible now. I’m loving watching her.”

As the future Well Written arrived, Digney was in the course of downsizing, and the filly was offered as a weanling at the Inglis Great Southern Sale of 2023.

She was bought for that figure - $32,500 - that’s becoming cheaper and cheaper by the start, by Foxhill Thoroughbreds. Behind that enterprise are Benji and Harry King, sons of Nick and Anne-Marie King of New Zealand’s Brighthill Farm. Harry’s now best known as Yulong’s sales and nominations manager, and his intimate knowledge of Written Tycoon heavily influenced the purchase.

“Written Tycoon is a great sire, but he can throw all sorts of types, including pretty plain ones,” Kirsopp-Cole said. “This is where Harry had the insight, being at Yulong. He knew to ignore the type with Written Tycoon.”

Race Record:

5 wins from 1200m to 1600m, NZ$1,415,625, in 2025-26, New Zealand One Thousand Guineas, Gr.1, Auckland TR Soliloquy S., Gr.2, Auckland Guineas, Gr.2, Karaka Million 3YO Classic, RL.

The King brothers decided to send Well Written across the Tasman to be pinhooked, via their parents’ farm. She didn’t get to Karaka but was sold at New Zealand Bloodstock’s National Online Yearling Sale in 2024, bought by trainer Stephen Marsh and Dylan Johnson Bloodstock for NZ$80,000.

She’s now won NZ$1.42 million, with her dizzying five wins - all since debuting in September as a three-year-old - including the New Zealand 1,000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m), her first start after Yulong bought 50 per cent of her.

Digney has been thrilled to watch it all unfold. Yes, he’d hoped to receive a good deal more for the filly, but he’s still delighted with how she’s blossomed.

“She was very backward as a weanling,” he recalls. “She still had the right shape, but she was a bit weak.

“To be honest, I thought I was going to get more than that, from the pedigree, but I decided to let her go at that price.

“Is there seller’s regret? Yes, but if you look at the whole cycle, she’s turned into a great horse, and I’ve still got Mozzie Monster.

“I’m not going to say I’m happy I sold the filly for $32,500, but it’s the game, isn’t it? And the upside is the mare’s very young still, she’s got two nice colts and a lot of breeding ahead of her.

“And if the filly had landed in an Australian trainer’s hands and they maybe pushed her a bit early, she probably wouldn’t be the horse she is today. So in hindsight, the sale was probably the best thing for the horse. The time the new owners and trainer have given her has been a blessing.

“She’s the best horse I’ve bred by a mile. I've bred a lot of cheap horses over the years, and gone to cheap stallions. But over the last five years I’ve got a bit more invested in it.”

The eight-year-old Mozzie Monster has an as yet unnamed two-year-old son of Shamus Award (Snitzel) and a foal by Nicconi (Bianconi), but missed on a return to Written Tycoon last spring. Digney intends to race both colts at this stage, unless Well Written’s deeds prompt offers worth considering.

At the same time, Digney has downsized, with Mozzie Monster now his only mare, after he had eight at one point.

Digney made a solid play to buy Mozzie Monster as a yearling for $150,000 at Magic Millions Gold Coast in 2019.

She’d been bred by Widden Stud, Bill Duncan Bloodstock and Hatta Bloodstock, by Widden sire Sebring out of the very useful mare Valentine Miss (Danetime).

A daughter of a Perth Group 3 placegetter in Torolosa (Housebuster), whose dam Yuleda (One Pound Sterling) won a Listed in the west, Valentine Miss also kicked off in Perth. Trained by Shane Edwards, she won her first two starts at Ascot, and added another win at Belmont alongside four city seconds before being sent east to the flying stable of Mark Kavanagh.

There she won three more races, including Caulfield’s How Now Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m). She added four Group 3 placings and ran fourth twice at the top level in Morphettville’s major 1200-metre sprints, the Robert Sangster Stakes and The Goodwood, in 2011.

At stud her first runner Asterius (Sebring) became a dual Sydney city winner for Chris Waller, before his deeds were eclipsed by his younger full-sister, Valentine Miss’s second runner Mozzie Monster.

Valentine Miss has gone on to boast four city winners from as many runners, the latter pair being triple Brisbane victor Argyle Pink (Star Witness) and Caulfield winner Landmark (Nicconi).

Now 20, Valentine Miss has Landmark’s full-sister heading to the Inglis Premier Yearling Sale as Lot 749 and has a King Colorado (Kingman) filly at foot, but wasn’t covered last spring.

“I bought Mozzie Monster mostly on type,” Digney said. “We had three or four marked out, but most of them went to over $400,000, and Mozzie fell into the price bracket we thought was value. She had a couple of little faults, which stopped her racing too much, but she was high quality.”

Sent by Digney to then Caulfield trainer John Sadler, Mozzie Monster looked extremely handy from the outset, emulating her dam by winning her first two starts. In the early spring of 2020, she debuted with a 1200-metre Cranbourne maiden victory then completed the relatively rare feat of taking a Benchmark 64 at her subsequent start, over 1300 metres. Both times she scored by 3.5 lengths as a short-priced favourite.

That earned her a trip to town in black type grade for Caulfield’s Jim Moloney Stakes (Listed, 1400m), where she ran a creditable third.

The following autumn she added more catalogue value with a second in the Bendigo Guineas (Listed, 1400m), but her career was cut short after two more starts and she retired still with just those first two wins, and three placings, from nine outings.

“You don’t often get trainers saying there’s something special about a horse, but that’s what John felt about Mozzie,” Digney said. “Unfortunately, she ended up going in the knee.”

Digney chose astutely, and presciently, in picking Written Tycoon for Mozzie Monster’s first mating.

Written Tycoon over Mozzie Monster’s sire Sebring had not a lot of form at the time, but has since been shown to work fairly well, with nine winners from 13 runners including the one stakes winner in Well Written, at seven per cent stakes winners to runners (SWTR).

But Written Tycoon over Sebring’s sire More Than Ready (Southern Halo) is dynamite, with four stakes winners from 35 runners, and 28 winners. That 11 per cent SWTR ratio isn’t quite Written Tycoon’s best, but it grows an extra leg on realisation that three of the four stakes winners scored at the elite level: Ciaron Maher’s pair Coolangatta and Southport Tycoon, and Murray Baker’s New Zealand filly Luna Rossa.

Mozzie Monster’s dam Valentine Miss hails from a Danehill (Danzig) sireline, which also runs well with Written Tycoon. Danehill gives the Yulong sire six winners from seven runners, but his son Danehill Dancer provides Written Tycoon’s finest SWTR ratio (from ten or more runners), with 15 winners from 17 runners and three stakes winners at 17 per cent. They include one top-tier victor in 2016 Doomben 10,000 (Gr 1, 1400m) hero Music Magnate.

“Over the years I’ve studied many stallion books and pedigrees, and for Sebring mares at the time, there wasn’t a lot really matching, though they’re a bit more exposed now,” Digney said.

“But we found Written Tycoon was the best match. When you looked at the More Than Ready nick with Written Tycoon, it was working pretty well.

“And she [Well Written] is looking pretty amazing at the moment.

“It’s a great feeling that this horse is making a lot of people happy. It was very important that she landed in the right hands and was given the time that she needed.”

Well Written’s is a relatively clean pedigree with no in-breeding, and the first double-ups emerging once the sixth generation is revealed.

There’s an interesting one for fans of sires with a major influence in Australia, with Irish import Better Boy (My Babu) at 5f x 6f, in handy places. He’s the third damsire of both Written Tycoon and Sebring.

Northern Dancer (Nearctic) bobs up six times, sprinkled through columns five through eight. He’s only once in the top half, as Written Tycoon’s fourth sire, but has a heavy hand in Mozzie Monster, appearing overall through five different offspring at 5m x 6f, 7m, 8f, 6m, 7m.

Mumtaz Begum (Blenheim) and Nogara (Havresac) are the most present females, with ten spots each, ahead of Natalma’s (Native Dancer) eight.

The great and ever-present Nearco (Pharos) is the equal-most dominant stallion with 18 appearances, but he’s matched on that number, more unusually, by his son Nasrullah.

Written Tycoon over Sebring/More Than Ready might have produced a plain looking foal in this case, but there’s no doubting Well Written’s ability.

Hayes’ Happy Valley brace delivers 700th win and Eustace hits the 50-win mark

David Hayes claimed his 700th Hong Kong winner and moved to within one win of the trainers’ championship summit with a race-to-race double that potentially unearthed a future star at Happy Valley on Wednesday night.

Hayes’ incredible season continues – tonight marked five wins in the last two meetings, and the 700 wins come from 15 seasons across two spells in Hong Kong. But the two-time champion trainer spent only a moment reflecting on the landmark before turning his attention to unearthing a runner for this season’s showpiece event, the Hong Kong Derby (2000m) on March 22.

In the first of his pair of winners, Dylan Browne McMonagle broke his Happy Valley duck with a hard-earned win aboard Hayes’ Romantic Son (Smart Missile) in the first section of the Class 3 Southorn Handicap (1200m).

It was the young Irishman’s third win of a three-month stint in Hong Kong.

“It was a very good job from Dylan [Browne McMonagle],” the Australian Racing Hall of Famer said. “I think he’s a high-class jockey and Hong Kong is just learning how good he is. I think you’ll find it’s just the start of many winners for him.”

The quickfire double was completed when Keith Yeung-guided China Win (Super Seth), having his first run in Class 3 company in the O’Brien Handicap (1800m), bore down on Tony Cruz’s long-time leader Liveandletlive (Muhaarar) to catch him on the line.

“It was a really good win. Keith [Yeung] rode a great race, and he’s a young horse, and just got a bit lost in the straight, but he’ll get much better with more racing,” Hayes said.

“Two starts ago, he got beaten because he was making a few mistakes. And then he won from barrier 14 at Sha Tin like a good horse the other day [January 11]. And today, I love the way he controlled the race. I just think the Tony Cruz horse gave a huge kick. And he’s good if he can get past him.”

With two wins and a second from China Win’s last three runs over 1800 metres, Hayes revealed he is now targeting the greatest prize of all for the son of Super Seth (Dundeel).

“I’m hoping he can keep winning and be a [Hong Kong] Derby contender. I’ll give him a try at 2000 [metres] next time,” Hayes added.

The brace was made all the sweeter by the fact that both horses were victorious in the famous Lindsay Park Racing silks.

“It’s good to have a double in my stable colours,” Hayes said. “That gave me a big thrill.”

Hayes’ 31st and 32nd successes of the season leave him second in the trainers’ championship, one win ahead of Caspar Fownes, and trailing Mark Newnham, who leads the way on 33.

That wasn’t the only milestone on an entertaining night of action.

David Eustace brought up 50 career Hong Kong wins in style as Ragga Bomb (Kodi Bear) blasted the field to prevail by three lengths in the Class 4 Jaffe Handicap (1650m) ridden by Hugh Bowman.

Early in the race, the Hayes-trained Ka Ying Glory (Turn Me Loose) burst forward from gate eight to set a faster-than-standard opening two sections, before being slowly reined in by the field.

Eustace said afterwards that the five-year-old gelding had been threatening to make an explosive breakthrough, and the brisk pace was just what he needed.

“The race worked out absolutely perfectly, and that runaway leader gave him something to aim at,” Eustace said.

“He’s adapting to the tracks now and how quick they are. He's learning how to race up and is getting better with every run.”

Eustace made it a double when Greater Bae (Pierata) eased to victory in the second section of the Class 3 Southorn Handicap (1200m), driven clear by Zac Purton, who himself registered a trio of wins.

Purton started as he meant to go on, taking out the Class 5 Fenwick Handicap (1000m) aboard Savvy Twinkle (Capitalist) to open the card. He followed that up with a storming win aboard Danny Shum’s Thunder Blink (Ribchester) in the Class 5 Fleming Handicap (1650m). It was the five-year-old’s first run since his transfer from the yard of Jimmy Ting and his third win from 16 starts.

Bowman moved to 31 wins for the season when he completed his brace. The Australian has now logged at least one win at each of the past five meetings. A barreling finish on Copartner Fleet (Nicconi) saw the Francis Lui inmate claim the night’s trophy contest, the Class 4 Hong Kong Football Club Centenary Cup Handicap (1000m).

A huge effort from Straight To Glory (Hellbent), driving hard at the line under Derek Leung, handed Michael Chang a first winner in six meetings in the second section of the Class 4 Lockhart Handicap (1200m) and secured back-to-back Happy Valley wins for the four-year-old.

John Size continued his fine run of form with another winner, his tenth in the last ten meetings, which saw him continue to inch his way up the trainers’ standings. He combined with Andrea Atzeni, who rode Amazing Kid (Exceed And Excel) to a third win from ten starts in the first section of the Class 4 Lockhart Handicap (1200m). The Italian has now been in the saddle for five of the master trainer’s last six victories.

Hong Kong racing continues at Sha Tin on Sunday with the running of the Hong Kong Classic Mile (1600m).
