High hopes for heightened support as results swing in Trapeze Artist’s favour

A surge of results in his fourth campaign of runners has Widden Stud tipping demand for their stallion Trapeze Artist (Snitzel) will be on the rise as the next breeding season approaches.

How appropriate, given the name, that Trapeze Artist should swing back into prominence this season, with his five stakes winners the equal seventh-highest number among Australian stallions by that metric.

And how fitting that the latest - Chilly Girl - is a homebred for the stallion’s owner Bert Vieira, and that her victory came in the race sponsored by the stud with which he’s so entwined, the Widden Stakes (Gr 3, 1100m), at Rosehill on Saturday.

What's On

“I was excited because it’s the Widden Stakes,” Vieira told ANZ News. “And this horse being a homebred, I actually had butterflies before the race.

“I can use the win to stir them up too, at Widden, because I got their money. But it’s alright, because they get plenty off me.”

Vieira has stuck by Trapeze Artist, the horse he bred and watched win four Group 1s to become the highest-rated son of the many greats sired by the late Snitzel (Redoute’s Choice), with a WTR peak of 123.

The millionaire financier knocked back offers from Coolmore Stud in order to stand the sprinter at Widden, where Vieira keeps most of his “80 to 90” mares.

While the jury was out after his first season of runners went stakes winner free, the three in his second term, and the two in his third - among 80 winners from 166 runners - sparked hopes of greater success.

This season is delivering, with Trapeze Artist’s five black-type victors helping him to a career-high current spot of 26th on the general sires’ table.

He sits fourth among two-year-old sires, and Inglis Nursery (RL, 1000m) bolter Where’s The Circus and now Chilly Girl give him the equal highest number of two-year-old stakes winners in the land, alongside no lesser stallions than Too Darn Hot (Dubawi) and Extreme Choice (Not A Single Doubt).

These results are helped by the fact Trapeze Artist’s current two-year-olds represent his largest crop, of 148 live foals, conceived in 2022 in his fourth year at stud after his service fee dropped to $55,000 (inc GST), from an initial $88,000 (inc GST).

As breeders waited, that fee fell again last season, to $33,000 (inc GST). That didn’t spark the hoped-for increase in bookings, however, with latest studbook figures showing only 52 mares covered, down from 95 at $55,000 (inc GST) in 2024.

However, Widden expects the 11-year-old to gain a boost in popularity next spring.

“He’s running hot, with three really nice, big race winners in recent weeks,” Widden owner Antony Thompson told ANZ, adding four-year-old Spywire to the list for his victory in the $1 million but non-black type The Syndicate (1100m) at the Gold Coast.

“Chilly Girl is now third-favourite for the Golden Slipper, Where’s The Circus is a big chance for the Inglis Millennium, and the stallion has some really good momentum at the moment.

“His earnings are looking great, his stats look great, and his five stakes winners this season is a great effort in itself.

“I guess now he’s got enough runners out there, and with big crops coming through, we’re expecting the momentum to keep going.”

Thompson tipped Trapeze Artist - whose ten overall stakes winners include Caulfield Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) hero and current sire Griff - would “jump back into vogue pretty quickly”, citing two Widden superstars from his younger days as inspiration.

“People would remember he’s Snitzel’s highest rated son, and he’s now getting to the point of being a good, solid, proven and great value option,” he said.

“Stallions go in and out of favour, they’ll go through their troughs, and it doesn’t matter how good the stallion is. It happened with Marscay and Bletchingly back in the day, and it still happens today. There’s crests and there’s troughs.

“And sometimes it’s the breeders who support them in the quiet years who get the really big rewards.”

Vieira will offer “a handful” of Widden’s ten lots by Trapeze Artist at next week’s Inglis Classic Yearling Sale, which help make up the farm’s auction-high 51-strong draft.

Widden’s Trapeze Artists include one colt in Lot 162 whose second dam was triple stakes winner Madame Pedrille (Secret Savings), and another in Lot 118 who’s from a half-sister to stakes-winning Jennifer Lynn (High Chaparral), with the pair out of Listed winner Espurante (Flying Spur)

Vieira is also gearing up to offer a sibling of Trapeze Artist’s for the first time at Inglis Easter, with a sister to go under the hammer in Widden’s draft as Lot 161.

“Every year I’ve bred from Trapeze Artist’s dam, I’ve kept the progeny,” Vieira said. “But this year, I’m selling his sister. Hopefully, she’ll sell well.”

Vieira is still besotted with his stallion.

“My boy - I think he’s amazing,” he said. “We love him, and what he’s done for us pleasure-wise, is amazing. He gave us four Group 1s, and now seeing what his progeny is doing is making me very happy.

“He’s really starting to get hot now as a stallion. He’s got a lot of two year olds this season, and they look really good. They’re running and winning so it’s a good sign. He’s really getting some nice ones, like Where’s The Circus, and this one.”

“This one” is Chilly Girl, the filly Vieira was instructed forcefully not to sell.

She was sent into the Widden to debut off two smart barrier trials by Gerald Ryan - Trapeze Artist’s trainer - and partner Sterling Alexiou.

And she led throughout to score by 0.32 lengths in a time comfortably faster than Slipper co-favourite Hidrix (Extreme Choice) set in leading home the males in the Canonbury Stakes (Gr 3, 1100m) one race earlier.

Chilly Girl is the 13th and final foal, and sole stakes winner, of I Got Chills (General Nediym), the Vieira homebred who won two Melbourne Listed contests from four stars. She was retired from breeding aged 21 in 2024, and later died.

“We always thought she’d throw a good one, and she finally did with her last foal,” said Thompson, whose right hand man at Widden, Matt Comerford, is largely responsible for Chilly Girl staying in Vieira’s ownership.

“Matt rang me one day,” Vieira recalls, “and said, ‘Don’t sell this one. This one is beautiful’.

“Matt knows horses, and he went through the whole lot of mine that year, and said Chilly Girl was really good. So I said, ‘OK’. I had no choice really, because the mother retired and then passed away.

“We sent her to Gerald and Sterling, and we always believed she was a special girl.

“The bookies have made her third favourite for the Slipper. I love her. I think she can do it. Her time was faster than the colts.

“I can’t wait. She’s going to run again in about three weeks. No one knows whats going to happen. I wish I did, because it would save me a lot of stress.

“But I’ve got a couple like her. Trapeze Artist is just giving me amazing boys and girls at present.”

Morning Briefing

Australia

Playin’it Sweet racks up second Listed success

The Adam Durrant-trained Playin’it Sweet (3 f Playing God - Sweet Ora by Oratorio) secured her second stakes success when landing Sunday’s Western Australian Breeders’ Classic (Listed, 1200m) at Bunbury. Ridden by Lucy Fiore, the three-year-old filly scored by 0.3 lengths over Talkanco (I’m All The Talk) with a further 0.8 lengths back to Pure Silver (D’Argento) in third. Sunday’s win added to Playin’it Sweet’s victory in November’s Burgess Queen Stakes (Listed, 1400m) at Ascot.

Lightning plan for My Gladiola

My Gladiola (Credit: Racing Photos)

The Black Caviar Lightning Stakes (Gr 1, 1000m) at Flemington on Saturday week is the likely starting point for the John McArdle-trained My Gladiola (I Am Invincible). The three-year-old daughter of I Am Invincible (Invincible Spirit) has thrived at Flemington, winning the Cap D'Antibes Stakes (Listed, 1100m) in September, before finishing runner-up in both the Danehill Stakes (Gr 2, 1100m) and Coolmore Stud Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) on the subsequent starts at the venue. "It works that we can accept in the Lightning and if it doesn't work, we can go back to the Oakleigh Plate, but she is a very effective horse down the straight," McArdle said. "She's run well at Caulfield, but a couple of times, mainly due to barriers she's ended up in awkward spots, and she hasn't been as effective. One of the other factors is Jamie [Mott] can ride her in the Lightning, but he wouldn't be able to ride her in the Oakleigh Plate. Having someone that knows her as well as he does is an advantage. She'll have 53 [kilograms] in the Newmarket and he'll ride her at 53.5 [kilograms] whereas she'll get probably 51 [kilograms] in the Oakleigh Plate and he's no hope of making that. That is a factor that myself and [part-owner] Paul Johnson have taken into consideration as she can be a bit of a trick ride." My Gladiola warmed up for her next assignments with a hit-out at Caulfield Heath on Thursday. "She needed the hit-out and the best part of it was she relaxed during the run which is what she needs to do," McArdle said. "Physically she's got bigger, she's matured. She's taking on the top-level horses, which she did against the three-year-olds in the spring but she's taking on the older horses this time and hopefully she can take the next step."

Nervous Witness set to kick off

Former Hong Kong gelding Nervous Witness (Star Witness) will begin his Australian campaign on Saturday when he lines up in a Benchmark 94 (1000m) at Randwick. Nervous Witness had been prepared in Hong Kong by David Hayes, before joining the Lindsay Park team of Ben, JD and Will Hayes late in 2024. The eight-year-old gelding has had four jumpouts, including winning a 1000-metre trial at Caulfield Heath on January 29, and Ben Hayes is expecting a decent performance this weekend. "As we saw in his trial, he's got a high cruising speed and he's always been a horse that trials very well, so don't let that trick you," Hayes said. "But for me, it was exciting to see because it looks like he's got that enthusiasm back. He was a boom Hong Kong sprinter, he had a great record, but towards the end Dad just felt he had lost him, but we think we've found him again. We were able to give him a good break, and they don't get that opportunity in Hong Kong to go out in the paddock. He's been here a while. We built him up to the trial stage then tipped him out and built him up again and he's now ready to go to the races. There's a nice race in Sydney, a [Benchmark] 94 over 1000 metres next Saturday, and he should get in beautifully there. If he was to run well, we could back him up in the Lightning Stakes [at Flemington the following week] or in the Oakleigh Plate two weeks later, then there is the Newmarket, and he should get in with no weight."

Guest House continues to please stable

Michael Kent Jnr has provided an update on Blue Diamond Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) contender Guest House (Home Affairs) after his stablemate Big Sky (Bivouac) laid down a Blue Diamond marker in Saturday's Chairman's Stakes (Gr 3, 1000m). The pair are now the $4.50 equal-favourites for the juvenile feature at Caulfield on February 21 and debut winner Guest House will resume in next Saturday’s Blue Diamond Prelude (C\&G) (Gr 3, 1100m). “Guest House couldn’t be going any better. He’s in amazing form at home,” Kent Jnr told RSN. “His trial was sensational. He’s a real two-year-old. He’s 16.1 hands, he’s all muscle and bone and he’s sound and he’s got a very good temperament.” Kent Jnr also provided an update on Big Sky: “The best part of his win was when Ben [Melham] gave him some rein and he accelerated like a good colt. He’s still raw and has a bit to learn. You don’t want him at his top now,” he said. “It’s a good problem to have when a horse can do so much wrong and have a look around and a gawk at the winning post and still win by a big margin. He might prefer to draw out so he can blend in on that dog‑leg bend at his own leisure. I can see no reason why he wouldn’t get 1200 metres. He’s very strong past the post and he’s bred to get 1200 metres.”

Royal Ascot on the cards for Charm Stone

Charm Stone (Credit: Racing Photos)

Dual Group 1 winner Charm Stone (I Am Invincible) could be set for a trip to Royal Ascot, with trainers Mick Price and Michael Kent Jnr considering their options. The five-year-old mare landed both the Robert Sangster Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) and Manikato Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) in 2025, and Kent Jnr admitted the owners are looking at the Ascot option. “Her owners have a desire to take her to Royal Ascot. If we can she’s got the right sort of form to go,” Kent Jnr told Racing.com. “I have no doubt she’s the right sort of mare.” A number of Australian stars have already been earmarked as possible Royal Ascot contenders, including Tentyris (Street Boss) and Lady Of Camelot (Written Tycoon), while Henry Dwyer’s Asfoora (Flying Artie) is already in the UK preparing for the carnival. The winner of the Lightning Stakes will earn an automatic invitation.

Brown plots Sepals' return

Mornington-based trainer Cliff Brown will give Sepals (Calyx) a jumpout at his local track on Wednesday as he prepares the four-year-old for the Shaftesbury Avenue Handicap (Gr 3, 1400m) at Flemington on March 7. The son of Calyx (Kingman) landed the Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) last September, and was last seen running second in the Golden Eagle (1500m) on November 1. “He’ll have a jumpout this week. I’m looking at the Shaftesbury Avenue Handicap at Flemington on March 7,” Brown told Racing.com. “I’ll see how he goes. Nothing yet is set in stone. I wanted to give him a good break. He showed he had recovered from the Toorak with his effort in the Golden Eagle, which was a tough race, so he had a good break. He’s a bit behind the others but he’s going okay. His jumpout the other day was good, and he will have this one and then another one.”

Dubai plan for Baraqiel

The Leon and Troy Corstens-trained Baraqiel (Snitzel) could be headed for a trip to Dubai, following his return in the Lightning Stakes at Flemington on February 14. The four-year-old gelding holds a nomination for the Al Quoz Sprint (Gr 1, 1200m) at Meydan on March 28 alongside stablemates Marble Nine (Kobayashi) and Zou Sensation (Zoustar). “To be honest, we haven’t actually discussed anything after the Lightning, and that’s for real,” Corstens said. “There are so many options. We’ve had great success with a horse like The Astrologist over there, in Dubai. If he [Baraqiel] shows he has improved down the straight, then it might be something we could have a really good look at.” Corstens feels that the lightly raced seven-year-old could improve this campaign. “Don’t worry, I’m under no illusions, I know he’s really going to be at his top in the Lightning, but I was really happy with that [trial], on Friday morning,” he said. “We are super happy with him.”

The Precursor takes Remutaka Classic

Exciting stayer The Precursor (St Jean) landed an impressive victory in the $350,000 Remutaka Classic (2100m) at Trentham on Saturday. The Roger James and Robert Wellwood-trained son of the star-crossed stallion St Jean (Teofilo) had won once from five starts for the Ciaron Maher stable in Victoria before heading to New Zealand and was sent north to James and Wellwood after two placings from two starts for the Fannin team, where he started Saturday’s contest as the $4.30 second favourite off the back of two further placings and a win over 1600 metres at New Plymouth. Hashizume made perfect use of barrier four by heading forward at the start and getting one off behind pacemakers Platinum Goddess (Alpine Eagle) and Shaking Stevens (American Pharoah) before leaving the straight for the first time. Applying the pressure around the home turn, Hashizume had his mount trucking as he shot to the front and despite being hotly challenged in the final stages, The Precursor drew away late to win comfortably by 0.7 lengths at the line over Roctave (Roc De Cambes). “We’ve had him for three runs now and he ran two good races over a mile before a big run at Ellerslie which gave us a lot of confidence,” Wellwood said. “I think he is a horse with a future but we won’t make any decisions until we get him home and see how he pulls up. I do think he will be a Cups horse in the future, although he still has a lot of maturing to do, albeit he is a five-year-old, but he is a nice horse in the making. He has strengthened since we got him and we know he is going to stay.”

Breslin eyeing Australia with Crouch

Crouch (Credit: Race Images)

Awapuni trainer Mike Breslin has plenty to mull over in the coming weeks as he hatches an autumn plan for his quality stayer Crouch (Tarzino). The six-year-old gelding put in another strong effort at Trentham on Saturday to post his second successive runner-up result in the Wellington Cup (Gr 3, 3200m), and Breslin is now hungry to try and go one better in next year’s edition. “He has gone huge again. Running second two years in a row is a good effort,” Breslin said. “Tina [Comignaghi] has ridden him both times and when she got off the scale I said, ‘maybe next year’, so hopefully that is the case. He is a really sound horse, he hasn’t been overly raced. I can’t see any reason why he can’t come back next year and run in it again.” Breslin is pleased with the way Crouch has come through the run, which has filled him with confidence as he looks to identify his next target. “He went for a pick of grass this [Sunday] morning and has licked his bowl, which is the norm for him,” Breslin said. “He looks bright as anything, he has come through it really well. I did have a look at the noms for it [Auckland Cup] this morning and it is not going to be too much different of a field than the Wellington Cup. I wouldn’t rule out putting in a late nom for the Auckland Cup, I will give it some thought, but I might just look at what is in Australia for him as well."

Seven for Fine Needle

Darley Japan stallion Fine Needle (Admire Moon) chalked up his seventh individual stakes winner on Sunday when the Masato Nishizono-trained Fioraia (5 m ex Fleur City by Sakura Bakushin O) scored in the Silk Road Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) at Kyoto. Eight for Authentic

Westwood (4 g ex Indian Bay by Indian Charlie) became the eighth individual stakes winner for Spendthrift Farm stallion Authentic (Into Mischief) when landing Saturday’s San Pasqual Stakes (Gr 2, 9f) at Santa Anita. Ridden by Kazushi Kimura for trainer John Shirreffs, the four-year-old gelding proved two and three-quarter lengths too strong for Getaway Car (Curlin) with a further seven and a half lengths back to the third-placed Bartholdy (Mendelssohn). Bred by Hinkle Farms, Westwood was purchased for US$700,000 by Mayberry Farm and is raced by C R K Stable LLC. Out of the Indian Charlie (In Excess) mare Indian Bay, Westwood is a half-brother to the Graded winner Shivaji (First Samurai) and to the Grade 1-placed Tarabi (First Samurai). Authentic will stand for a fee of US$15,000 (approx. AU$21,550) during the 2026 northern hemisphere breeding season.

70 for Not This Time

Taylor Made Farm’s leading stallion Not This Time (Giant’s Causeway) sired his 70th individual stakes winner when Nearly (3 c ex Ib Prospecting by Mineshaft) registered a dominant victory in Saturday’s Holy Bull Stakes (Gr 3, 8.5f) at Gulfstream Park. Ridden by John Velazquez for trainer Todd Pletcher, three-year-old colt Nearly scored by five and three-quarter lengths over Bravaro (Upstart) with a further two and three-quarter lengths back to Project Ace (War Of Will) in third. Bred by Wind Hill Farm, Nearly was purchased by his owners Centennial Farms for US$350,000 and is out of the Mineshaft (A.P. Indy) mare Ib Prospecting. The stallion’s day got off to a brilliant start when On Time Girl (3 f ex Girl Daddy by Uncle Mo) took out the Forward Gal Stakes (Gr 3, 7f). The filly defeated Imperatrice (City Of Light) by three lengths with a further neck back to Sneaky Good (Into Mischief) in third. Bred and raced by the Albaugh Family Stables Llc, the filly is out of the Grade 3-winning Uncle Mo (Indian Charlie) mare Girl Daddy. Not This Time will stand the 2026 northern hemisphere breeding season at a fee of US$250,000 (approx. AU$359,090).

121 for War Front

Quatrocento (5 h ex Huasca by Tiz Wonderful) became the 121st individual stakes winner for Claiborne Farm stallion War Front (Danzig) when landing Saturday’s Tampa Bay Stakes (Gr 3, 8.5f) at Tampa Bay Downs. Ridden by Julien R Leparoux for trainer Fausto Gutierrez, the five-year-old entire scored by three and three-quarter lengths over Tom’s Magic (Justify) with a further neck back to Win For The Money (Mohaymen) in third place. Bred and raced by St George Stables Llc, Quatrocento is out of the Graded-placed Tiz Wonderful (Tiznow) mare Huasca. War Front is standing for a private fee.

Little Paradise triumphs in spectacular style to claim Hong Kong Classic Mile

Leo Schlink

Little Paradise sweeps clear under Vincent Ho. (Credit:  HKJC)

Emphatically dispelling stamina doubts, Little Paradise (Toronado) surged to a devastating victory in the HK$13 million (approx. AU$2.37 million) Hong Kong Classic Mile (1600m) at Sha Tin on Sunday to underline imposing credentials for the remainder of the Four-Year-Old Classic Series.

Trained by Jimmy Ting, who won this race on Industrialist (Rudimentary) in 2000 when it was known as the Hong Kong Classic Trial, and ridden by Vincent Ho, Little Paradise weaved his way through the field over the final 300 metres, before explosively accelerating to a two-length margin over Infinite Resolve (Snitzel), with a further half-length back to Beauty Bolt (Night Of Thunder), in 1m 33.31s.

Sagacious Life (Put It Back) finished fourth after a three-wide trip from barrier 13, while Top Dragon (Pierata) finished solidly for fifth.

Settling in tenth place, Little Paradise was given a patient ride by Ho – who won the Hong Kong Classic Mile in 2020 as part of Golden Sixty’s (Medaglia D’Oro) clean sweep of the series – before being initially blocked for a run at the top of the straight.

Ho changed direction twice in search of clear running before Little Paradise stormed to his sixth win from nine starts – clocking a searing 22.51 for the final 400 metres, and 11.16s for the closing 200 metres - while giving the impression the Hong Kong Classic Cup (1800m) on March 1 and the Hong Kong Derby (2000m) on March 22 are well within his grasp.

Ho believes Little Paradise’s laidback disposition will allow the Toronado (High Chaparral) gelding to cope with 1800 metres and beyond.

“Today, he relaxed very well and at the top of the straight, I was looking to come out and I could see Zac in the three-wide position [on Sagacious Life] and for some time I needed to hold him back because the horse in front of me wasn’t going anywhere, but luckily we ended up having room to track Zac up and move to his outside,” Ho said.

“Once I pressed the button, he just kicked it. He finished off very well, so he can definitely handle a mile without a problem, and I told Jimmy even for 1800 metres, he will also produce that sort of kick as long as we relax him early.

“So, I’m looking forward to the [Hong Kong] Classic Cup and the [Hong Kong] Derby. I’m very grateful for the support I’ve had in coming back from injury and to win the [Hong Kong] Classic Mile is encouraging and I’m always grateful for everything.

“Little Paradise is a very nice horse. The main thing stepping up to the mile for him was to relax no matter what and I didn’t rush him because we couldn’t and we know he has a really good turn of foot from his last run.

“He’s a really flexible horse as well. If the pace is slow, he can be very close to the speed and still give you a give turn of foot when you ask him. So, he’s a really nice horse to handle.  Also, thanks to Jimmy and [owner] Mr Ko for the opportunity.”

Celebrating the most important success of his training career, Ting said: “He’s a very good horse, but at the last 300 metres I got a bit scared because he got stuck [behind runners] but when he got a gap, Vincent Ho said he was flying home. He’s a very good horse. It’s fantastic.”

Little Paradise was offered at the 2023 Inglis Classic Yearling Sale by Wayne and Pauline Alchin’s Carramar Park on behalf of their son Tim, who bred him.

He was purchased by the combination of Chris McAnulty (Dullingham) and Bond Li (Legends Bloodstock) for $270,000.

It was a dream result for Tim Alchin, who had bought his dam Devil In Her Heart (Star Witness) carrying Little Paradise for just $27,500 on Inglis Digital in February 2021.

Both Chris McAnulty and Tim Alchin were trackside at Sha Tin to witness the victory.

“For him to be where he was on the home corner and to still win like he did, is pretty unbelievable,” McAnulty said.

“It is immensely gratifying for Bond and myself to have identified Little Paradise as a yearling and to see him go on and win a domestic Group 1 in Hong Kong.

“The idea was always to trade him to Hong Kong, we purchased him from Inglis Classic and sent him to Bjorn Baker at Warwick Farm and once he won his trial at his first outing, Jimmy Ting came and looked at the horse and had a client ready to buy.”

Tim Alchin was almost speechless after the race and said it meant so much to his family at Carramar Park.

“This is my first trip to Hong Kong, I’ve always wanted to visit and this felt like the perfect excuse – win or lose – and I just can’t describe the feeling… for a smaller stud this is just unreal,” Alchin said.

“My partner Georgia and I arrived on Thursday and this whole build up has been incredible, then to watch the race unfold when he couldn’t find a gap then burst through the middle, it’s hard to describe the feeling, my heart was popping out of my chest.

“He is the first horse I’ve ever sold myself and to see that foal become a Group 1 winner in Hong Kong is something everyone dreams about.

“My dad Wayne loves Inglis Digital and can’t wait to celebrate with him and mum at Warwick Farm this week at inspections, we fly out tomorrow and will head straight to Riverside.”

John Size vaulted into fifth place in the trainers’ championship with 24 wins after firing in a treble. The 13-time Hong Kong champion trainer unveiled promising talent Master Lucky (Shamus Award), who landed the Class 4 Clear Water Bay Handicap (1000m) under Dylan Browne McMonagle, before Zac Purton piloted Crossborderdude (El Roca) to victory in the second section of the Class 4 Lam Tsuen Handicap (1200m).

Size completed an excellent meeting when Hong Kong Derby nominee Super Express (Ten Sovereigns) claimed the Class 3 Yan Chau Tong Handicap (1400m) under Maxime Guyon.

Mark Newnham fielded four runners in the Hong Kong Classic Mile, finishing second with Infinite Resolve, sixth with Invincible Ibis (Hellbent), 11th with Crimson Flash (Showtime) and 13th with Winfield (Rally Cry) but the Australian horseman scored at the meeting when another Hong Kong Derby entrant, Lucky Sam Gor (Press Statement), landed the Class 3 Kat O Handicap (1600m) for Jerry Chau.

Francis Lui’s blistering form continued with the victory of Hong Kong International Sale graduate Patch Of Theta (Zoustar) in the Class 1 Mirs Bay Handicap (1400m) under Hugh Bowman. The Zoustar (Northern Meteor) gelding nudged through a narrow gap late to claim Drombeg Banner (Starspangledbanner) and Light Years Charm (Rubick) to give Lui 11 winners from the past ten meetings and 22 for the campaign.

Lui will consider a tilt at Ka Ying Rising (Shamexpress) in the Queen’s Silver Jubilee Cup (Gr 1, 1400m) on February 22 for Patch Of Theta.

“It was a good performance, we will look towards the Queen’s Silver Jubilee [Cup] on February 22, but I will need to consider it fully,” he said. “The jockey knows him well and the horse is a very honest one. The pace was not that slow and that was my worry – if they slowed down the pace, he would have fought with Hugh and would not have finished.”

A rising star on the international stage, Irishman McMonagle posted a double when Ricky Yiu’s Blazing Wukong (Toronado) overcame gate 12 to prevail in the Class 4 Long Valley Handicap (1600m), while Happy Shooter (Deep Field), another Hong Kong International Sale graduate, broke through for his first victory in the first section of the Class 4 Lam Tsuen Handicap (1200m) for Danny Shum and Lyle Hewitson.

David Hall slotted a double with Shotgun (Charm Spirit) in the Class 5 Kiu Tsui Handicap (1200m) under Matthew Poon and Rising Phoenix (Darci Brahma) for James Orman in the Class 4 Robin’s Nest Handicap (1400m), before Poon also sealed a brace when Michael Chang’s Glowing Praise (Yes Yes Yes) surprised at 31/1 with victory in the Class 3 Hoi Ha Handicap (1000m).

Hong Kong racing continues at Happy Valley on Wednesday with the conclusion of the DBS x Manulife Million Challenge.
