New Zealand’s Wentwood Grange Stud have come back across “the ditch” with a small but select draft for Inglis Classic, continuing their decade-long attendance at the sale.

And while they’re also gearing up for their first venture to Easter later in the autumn, their four Classic lots - all by sires of the moment - wouldn’t look out of place at Inglis’s No.1 sale either.

Reflecting a keen interest in Darley sires, three of Wentwood Grange’s four Classic lots are by that farm’s stallions: in-demand first season prospect Anamoe (Street Boss), the well proven Harry Angel (Dark Angel), and Ghaiyyath (Dubawi), fresh from his explosive results in the spring.

What's On

The fourth member of the quartet is by surging New Zealand-based shuttler Satono Aladdin (Deep Impact), who’s parlayed his champion two-year-old and second season sire titles across the Tasman in 2022-23 to currently boast a stakes winners to runners ratio there of 12.8 per cent (10 from 78), which echoes his 12.9 per cent rate in Australia (four from 31).

Run for the past 12 years by brothers Dean, Sean and Leigh Hawkins, who took over from their Welsh immigrant parents Des and Jan, Wentwood brings their latest draft to Classic off the back of a booming Karaka sale, where their 27 sold yearlings ranked them fifth among vendors by aggregate.

“We’ve got a nice bunch of lots for Easter as well, but we just felt this was the right sale for these four,” said Dean Hawkins, whose farm has been a modern constant at Classic, even through the Covid years, also selling four yearlings at its past three editions.

“It’s a good sale for us, because of the timing. Our Karaka and Classic horses get a very similar prep, with the Classics starting a week or so later than the Karakas, and then we started prepping our Easter horses just before Karaka.

“Obviously getting horses over here and into the Australian market gets our brand over here.

“We try to use the produce of younger mares normally, to help get them kicked off by having their horses compete in Australia, and this year we’ve brought over yearlings by a few Australian stallions, so hopefully they’ll prove popular.”

At Riverside, Wentwood Grange is located in “Kiwi Alley” - in Barn C alongside Woburn Farm and Windsor Park, who have two yearlings apiece.

“We all support each other and work in with each other,” Hawkins said. “Nick Hewson from Windsor Park does the cards for all three of us.”

Hewson and Hawkins bred and part-owned Lickety Split (Turn Me Loose) in a racing career including triumphs in Ellerslie’s Sistema Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) and Flemington’s Edward Manifold Stakes (Gr 2, 1600m) in 2022, amid three black type victories.

And the pair, with partners, will offer Lickety Split’s first foal - another colt by Anamoe - in Wentwood Grange’s draft at Easter, along with colts by Satono Aladdin and Zousain (Zoustar), and a filly by Super Seth (Dundeel).

As for more immediate matters, the Brothers Hawkins are confident of strong results from their Classic quartet, based not only on their quality but on stats from Magic Millions Gold Coast, whose Book 1 average rose slightly on 2025, and Karaka, where it leapt from $164,800 to $187,000.

“Magic Millions and Karaka were fairly strong sales and Inglis have done a great job of getting people here for Classic,” Dean said. “It’s been pretty busy on the ground, so hopefully it’s a strong sale.

“As always, we’re here to sell. Ours won’t be going home.”

Wentwood Grange’s Classic draft begins on day one on Sunday with Lot 234, a chestnut filly by Harry Angel whose page has room for only two dams.

She’s the sixth foal of Irish 1900-metre winner Namurian Sunset (Thousand Words), a half-sister to Germany’s 2003 Horse of the Year and Champion 3YO Ransom O’War (Red Ransom).

Aside from Ransom O’War, second dam Sombreffe (Polish Precedent) threw the dams of four stakes winners, who include two Australian performing half-siblings. Star Of The Seas (Ocean Park) won the VRC Blamey Stakes (Gr 2, 1600m) and was second in Randwick’s Doncaster Mile (Gr 1, 1600m) and Winx Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) of 2020; and Spieth (Thorn Park) won five times including in Listed class, and was second in Flemington’s Darley Classic (Gr 1, 1200m).

“She’s a good, strong-moving, leggy and athletic filly with a lot of black type in her family,” Hawkins said of Lot 234.

“Harry Angel’s results are phenomenal. He’s done a brilliant job down here. He’s a medium sized stallion and Namurian Sunset is a big, physical mare, so it was a really nice physical mating.”

On day two, Wentwood offers two in quick succession starting with Lot 547, a colt by Satono Aladdin.

He’s out of six-time winning mare Unique Magic (Denman), whose dam Magic Star (Danzero) was a sizzling performer in the breeding barn, throwing three stakes winners. One sits among Wentwood’s great success stories in triple Group 1 winner Kolding (Ocean Park), whom they bred with a partner, while another was quadruple stakes victor - and 12-time winner - Sampson (Dubai Destination).

Third dam This Way Up (Semipalatinsk) threw seven-time Queensland stakes winner Make Mine Magic (Canadian Silver).

Lot 553: Anamoe ex Valley Girl filly (Credit: Inglis)

“He’s a very showy boy,” Hawkins said of the colt. “He’s brown with a fair bit of white about him, and he’s a beautifully built colt.

“Magic Star was a terrific mare for us. Kolding was a headline horse for us for a very long time. And Satono Aladdin’s stats are just terrific. The mare’s not overly big, but Satono Aladdin is a big boy, so he’s added a bit of size to the mare.”

A few minutes later will come Lot 553, a filly by Anamoe with impeccable bloodlines.

She’s the seventh foal of Valley Girl (Mastercraftsman), winner of Te Rapa’s Herbie Dyke Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m) and second in Rosehill’s Vinery Stud Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m) of 2016.

Second dam Leigh Valley (Bianconi) won a Group 3 and ran fourth at the top level.

“This filly’s a big, strong, powerful girl, who really moves like Anamoes do,” said Hawkins, whose farm sold three such yearlings at Karaka, including their personal sale-topper in a colt who fetched $600,000.

“Anamoe’s got a sensational walk, and this filly just glides across the ground as well.

“She’s got a fantastic brain on her, like all the Anamoes we’ve had, and she’s very well grown and looks very similar to her mum.

“Valley Girl is a big, strong, powerful mare. Anamoe’s just added that touch of class.”

Wentwood’s final offering, Lot 668, taps into the same family. He’s a colt by Ghaiyyath out of Berg En Dal (Dehere), a two-time winner in New Zealand whose dam was Eastend (Bigstone), also the dam of Leigh Valley.

The farm sent a mare to Ghaiyyath in his first Australian season, and sold the resultant colt at Classic 2024 for $275,000 - comfortably the highest priced of their quartet that year.

Impressed enough to go back to the Darley shuttler, Wentwood were then delighted to see Ghaiyyath explode last the spring, with first crop three-year-olds including VRC Derby (Gr 1, 2500m) hero Observer, Different Gravy, Yum and Freedom Flame giving him four stakes winners, among a current Australian total of 36 runners, at 11.11 per cent.

“We were very fortunate to send the mare to Ghaiyyath before he kicked off,” Hawkins said. “We bred one to him in his first year who was a ripper that we brought to Classic, so we were keen to go back to him.

“We love that Dubawi blood, and Ghaiyyath himself was a champion racehorse in Europe.

“This mare was a good physical for Ghaiyyath, medium size and classy - very similar to the first mare we sent to him.

“And this colt is a very well grown boy. He’s perhaps more of a three-year-old type, like Ghaiyyath’s Australian stakes winners.

“He gets across the ground very well. He walks like a panther.”

Morning Briefing

Australia

High Alert bidding to showcase Blue Diamond credentials

The Anthony and Sam Freedman-trained High Alert (Street Boss) will need to hit the first two places in Saturday's Blue Diamond Prelude (C\&G) (Gr 3, 1100m) if he is to gain a place in the Blue Diamond (Gr 1, 1200m) itself. Sam Freedman admitted the colt will need to run a big race this weekend after having finished fourth in the Blue Diamond Preview (C\&G) (Listed, 1000m) at Caulfield on January 24 on debut. "He's probably going to have to run first two to get into the race I would say," Freedman said. "He's going to be a proper horse in time. He put on weight, so it didn't hurt him at all. He pulled up super and really, he ended up with a dash home. Hopefully he gets a bit of even luck, and we can see where he sits, but I don't know if that's the 'A' grade form. We're always wary of the unlucky horse in a bad race, but he does work like a nice horse, so hopefully he can show it. It was still enough of a run leading to the Blue Diamond. The horse went off next to him in the gates, but that's why he will be a nice horse, because nothing really fazes him."

Autumn Stakes lead-up for Guineas-bound Planet Red

Planet Red (Credit: Racing Photos)

October's Caulfield Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) runner-up Planet Red (Admire Mars) will make his return to the racetrack on Saturday when he tackles the Autumn Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m) at Caulfield. The Mick Price and Michael Kent Jnr-trained gelding is being prepared for a Guineas redemption in the Australian Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) at Flemington on February 28, and Price is expecting a decent performance from the son of Admire Mars (Daiwa Major) on his return. "He had five weeks off after the Caulfield Guineas," Price said. "When he went into the Caulfield Guineas, he only had a certain amount of energy left in him, but we got it to come together in the last two weeks before that race and he ran super. He had five weeks off, but I haven't got enough horse to do the Space Rider prep. Space Rider is going to have three runs into the Australian Guineas, but I'm going to take a punt on Planet Red. He runs in the 1400 metres and then it is three weeks to the Guineas. He has improved a little bit as a gelding, but it's a quick turnaround from the spring."

Sutton keeping options open with Feroce

Dom Sutton has said he will be avoiding wet tracks with Feroce (Super Seth) this campaign as last year's Australian Guineas winner reappears in Saturday's Kevin Heffernan Stakes (Gr 3, 1400m) at Caulfield. Top-level events such as the Futurity Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) at Caulfield on February 21 and the All-Star Mile (Gr 1, 1600m) at Flemington next month are on the agenda, as is the Blamey Stakes (Gr 2, 1600m) on February 28. "We haven't made any set plans. We want to see how he returns first-up," Sutton said. "We'll probably keep him to that 1400 metres, to a mile, but he has returned well. Potentially he could head to the Futurity, the All-Star Mile, but if we need to keep him a level down, there is also the Blamey at Flemington. The weather will dictate whether he goes to Sydney for a race like the Doncaster, but we'll probably just target Victoria because we know how wet Sydney can get in the autumn. I'll be dodging the wet tracks with him."

Waller chasing maiden Millennium win

Chris Waller will chase a maiden victory in Saturday's Inglis Millennium (RL, 1100m) at Randwick, with debut winner Fireball (Snitzel) set to line up alongside Defensemen (Wootton Bassett). Waller will also run debutant Campione D'Italia (Snitzel) in the Lonhro Plate (Listed, 1000m) on the same card, as he looks to bolster his hand for both the Blue Diamond and Golden Slipper (Gr 1, 1200m). "We have five or six good two-year-olds and we are just finding out where they fit in," Waller said. "Fireball has already won a race at Rosehill quite impressively. He had a trial the other morning and he has come back well. Defensemen has had two runs in the Golden Gift and one [race] before that and was just in behind them. He has come back strong." Fireball and Defensemen have drawn alongside each other in barriers three and four respectively, with the former a clear market pick of the pair as a $5.50 equal-favourite alongside Tulloch Lodge flagbearer Plagiarism (Written By).

Farragher looks forward to Long Throw ride

British jockey Adam Farragher is hoping that he can land a big-race success this weekend when taking the ride aboard Long Throw (Brave Smash) in Randwick's Inglis Millennium. Farragher rode Long Throw to her debut second placing in an 1100-metre contest at Rosehill last month and is delighted to be back aboard the Ciaron Maher-trained filly in Saturday's $2 million event. “It takes a bit of adjusting when you first start riding but I feel a lot more comfortable and confident,’’ Farragher told Racing NSW. “Ciaron is giving me loads of opportunities and I’m getting some outside rides as well. It’d be nice to get a big Saturday winner like that, it’d be a nice boost going into the carnival. First day at school you’re open minded but she was a filly that was pleasing us, we were hopeful of a decent run and she did that. She only went into that off the back of one trial so naturally I thought there would be plenty of improvement out of that. And it felt like that on the day. You could tell she was learning on the job and improving and the penny was starting to drop late. I thought she did some very good late work through the line. She is going to have to improve going into a race like the Millennium but naturally she will and hopefully she can run a good race.”

Schofield hoping to take Tempted chance

Tempted (Credit: Sportpix)

Three-time Group 2-winning filly Tempted (Street Boss) will make her return to the races in Saturday's Eskimo Prince Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) at Randwick, with Chad Schofield coming in for the ride. James Mcdonald is committed to the Coolmore-owned colt Wodeton (Wootton Bassett) in Saturday's Group 3, so Schofield has picked up the ride on October's The Everest (Gr 1, 1200m) runner-up. "It was a bit of good work from my manager who identified the ride might be available and put my name in the ring," Schofield said. "I was grateful Godolphin and Ciaron were happy to put me on and hopefully I can repay their faith in me. I went and galloped her on Monday morning and was very taken by her. I can't wait to ride her Saturday. She is extremely talented, and I feel like we haven't seen the best of her yet. Hopefully it's this preparation and I'm on her back." Despite having to concede 1.5 kilograms to the likes of Golden Rose (Gr 1, 1400m) runner-up Wodeton under the set weights plus penalties conditions of the race, Tempted was a solid $1.70 favourite on Thursday. "For sure. She's got the runs on the board, and we've seen her talent," Schofield said. "She looks to have come back really well, and she is a deserved favourite."

Listed task for Lady Moscato

The Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott-trained Lady Moscato (Home Affairs) will represent John Stewart's Resolute Racing when she lines up in Saturday's Lonhro Plate at Randwick. The juvenile daughter of Home Affairs (I Am Invincible) is out of multiple Group 1 placegetter Champagne Cuddles (Not A Single Doubt) and was purchased by Tulloch Lodge and Kestrel Thoroughbreds for $1.05 million at last year's Magic Millions yearling sale. Making her first competitive appearance last month, the filly ran second in the Magic Millions The Debut (1000m) at the Gold Coast. "It was the first year we were able to put something together with them at the sales. “John Stewart partnered with Coolmore on this filly, and a few other partners as well," Bott said. "She's a really nice type for him and she fits into his model well in terms of what he's trying to achieve internationally in racing. Some black type would obviously be very important to fit into that model. We always intended to have her up there then wanted to see her in some of the [Golden] Slipper lead ups and this race gives us the right timing. After this we can go into one of the fillies' races and hopefully give ourselves a Slipper chance." Lady Moscato will be joined in Saturday's race by stablemates Caloocan Beauty (Justify), who was fourth to Satin Summer (Written Tycoon) at her only start, and debutant Agrarian Girl (Tassort). "Caloocan Beauty was very good the other day and will be better for that experience. She looks to have improved and gone the right way," Bott said. "Agrarian Girl is giving away a bit of race experience. It's an ask on debut but it's her home track, but the form around her trial looks good now following the Canonbury and has been validated in the last seven days."

Dad And Dave aiming for Derby double

Having taken out the Launceston Guineas (Listed, 2000m) on his previous start, the Ciaron Maher-trained Dad And Dave (Time Test) will bid to become the fourth consecutive horse to complete the Launceston Guineas/Tasmanian Derby (Listed, 2200m) double when he heads to Hobart on Friday night. "Which Derby we weren't sure," Maher's assistant Jack Turnbull said. "But he's got here at the right time. When he ran and won his maiden, it didn't scream to set him for any other Derby at the moment, so we'll see how he runs on Friday night but there is the potential to come back and look at Adelaide if he was still sound and well." The gelding will be looking to emulate the feats of Dunkel (Dundeel) (2023), Bold Soul (Embellish) (2024) and Likeakalix (Calyx) last year as three-year-olds to complete the double. "It's good racing down there, the prize-money is decent, they look after you really well and the facilities are really great," Turnbull said. "It's only a short flight and it's attractive to go there. He's a lighter-framed horse that has always been straight forward and is one we have been wanting to get out a trip. The 2200 metres, it's a nice step for him. He's had a good foundation, and it doesn't look too strong a race."

Highview announce Unreserved Deplenishing Sale

Brent Gillovic (Credit: NZB)

Longstanding vendors Highview Stud, who have been selling yearlings since 1986, have announced the staging of an Unreserved Deplenishing Sale at its Hamilton property on Sunday, March 15, 2026.

New Zealand Bloodstock (NZB) will conduct the sale on-farm, which will offer approximately 50 lots consisting of yearlings, two-year-olds, racehorses, broodmares, mares with a foal at foot and more.

“There’s a changing of the guard at Highview, with my son Kurtis now taking a more prominent leadership role,” Highview’s Brent Gillovic said.

“We’ve accumulated a lot of horses so this is a genuine reduction process to trim the operation back to around 30 to 40 mares before I hand over the reins.

“We’ve got a number of sires represented including some nice young horses by the likes of Wrote, Santos, Divine Prophet, Sword of State, Xtravagant, Hello Youmzain, Sweynesse, Vadamos and more.

“There will be something for everyone. At the end of the day, our main goal is to find these horses good homes, we’re not expecting the world for them. It will be a nice Sunday afternoon, with plenty of opportunities for everyone.”

The Highview Unreserved Deplenishing Sale will see around 50 thoroughbreds for sale, conducted from 1pm at Highview Stud, 1544 Kakaramea Road, Hamilton, with gates open at 10am. The catalogue will be available to view online at www.nzb.co.nz by late February, while printed catalogues will be available on the day.

While online bidding is unavailable, all prospective buyers are welcome to attend. Alternatively NZB and BAFNZ agents will be able to inspect and bid on your behalf should you be unable to attend.

To register, existing NZB account holders can see the NZB team prior to the Sale starting on-farm at Highview Stud. While new buyers can create an account online here. The Sale will be conducted by NZB under special terms and conditions which will be available in due course.

Tajana in prime order for Oaks lead-up

Tajana (Darci Brahma) is coming toward the sharp end of her season and co-trainer Shaune Ritchie is well-qualified to rate her chances of ending it on a high. The top-rated filly will attempt to add further winning momentum to her Classic campaign when she steps out in Saturday’s David & Karyn Ellis Fillies’ Classic (Gr 2, 2100m) at Te Rapa. Ritchie has already won the New Zealand Oaks (Gr 1, 2400m) with Jennifer Eccles (Rip Van Winkle) (2020), Artistic (Darci Brahma) (2012) and Keep The Peace (Keeper) (2010) and will bid for his first in the feature with current training partner Colm Murray. Like Artistic, Tajana is a daughter of Darci Brahma (Danehill), bred and raced by The Oaks Stud, and Ritchie believes she has all the attributes required to add to the stable’s record. “Put it this way, she’s even more laid back and with a better temperament than the other three Oaks winners I’ve had,” he said. “You can’t train that into them, they either have it or they don’t.” Tajana came off a lengthy break to beat a small age-group line-up over 1600 metres at Pukekohe last time out and has since progressed faultlessly with George Rooke to again take the ride. “She sprinted very quickly but the part we wanted to see was her relax and drop the bridle,” Ritchie said. “She is in superb order for Saturday and has had a nice exhibition gallop."

Ellis counts down to one of his favourite racedays

Fresh from claiming the title of leading buyer at Karaka for the 18th time, Te Akau Racing principal David Ellis is turning his attention to one of his highlights of the racing calendar at Te Rapa this Saturday. Both Ellis and his wife Karyn Fenton-Ellis are former chairs of the Waikato Racing Club, and Te Rapa’s Herbie Dyke Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m) and BCD Group Sprint raceday features a prestigious race named in honour of their contributions – the David & Karyn Ellis Fillies’ Classic. The $275,000 feature for three-year-old fillies has carried the Ellis name since 2020, and the stable has recorded two victories during that period with Amarelinha (Savabeel) (2021) and Self Obsession (Shocking) (2022). Te Akau will be represented in the 2026 edition on Saturday by last-start winner Born To Be Royal (King’s Legacy), who was bought by Ellis for $260,000 from Karaka 2024. In addition to her recent victory over 2000 metres at Matamata, the King’s Legacy (Redoute’s Choice) filly has placed in another five of her eight career starts, including the Matamata Breeders’ Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) and last month’s Sir Patrick Hogan Stakes (Gr 2, 2000m). “It’s a very special race meeting for Karyn and I every year, and we’d love to win the race that carries our name again,” Ellis said. “I think we’ve got a really strong chance in it this year with Born To Be Royal, and we’d especially like to win it with her because our good friend Butch Castles has a share in the filly with us. Cameron George also has a share in both that filly and also Towering Vision, who will be a leading contender in the Waikato Guineas, so he has a couple of very good chances on what should be another fantastic raceday at Te Rapa.”

Latta hoping to continue winning momentum

Connello (Credit: Race Images)

Still coming down from the high of taking out last weekend’s Wellington Cup (Gr 3, 3200m), trainer Lisa Latta is hoping to quickly add to her stakes haul over the long weekend. Her first bid will be at Tauherenikau on Waitangi Day where last-start winner Connello (Time Test) will contest the Wairarapa Thoroughbred Breeders’ Stakes (Listed, 1600m). Latta has been pleased with her progression since her last-start victory over 1400 metres at Trentham last month and she is hoping Connello can put in a repeat performance for owner David Woodhouse at his home track. “She is not very big, but she tries extra hard,” Latta said. “She has trained on really well from that win. David lives down there [Wairarapa] so it would be great to win it for him.” Latta will also head to Te Rapa on Saturday with just the one runner in Platinum Attack (Santos) who will tackle the BCD Group Sprint (Gr 1, 1400m). The five-year-old gelding made a winning start to his preparation when victorious in the Pegasus Stakes (Listed, 1000m) at Riccarton in November before finishing runner-up to Azeezle (Exceed And Excel) in the Levin Stakes (1200m) at Otaki. He was met by rain-affected tracks when sixth and fifth respectively in the Telegraph (Gr 1, 1200m) and Railway (Gr 1, 1200m), and Latta is hopeful of an improved performance on better footing this weekend. “We are really happy with him,” she said. “He has just been plagued with wet tracks and wide draws. We have added some ear covers on him and he will get back on a good track on Saturday, but he will need a bit of luck from that draw [eight].”

Kennedy seeking further southern success

Barbara Kennedy is hoping she will be pouring more wine in celebration following Wingatui’s meeting on Saturday where the South Auckland trainer is seeking to score more southern stakes success. The expat South African is currently on her first South Island campaign, and she kicked it off with a bang when recording her first stakes win when Pour The Wine (Telperion) powered away to a two-length victory in the Timaru Stakes (Listed, 1200m) at Riccarton a fortnight ago. “We didn’t expect her to win like that, but we are taking it,” Kennedy said. “Since arriving down south she has been thriving. It was my first win with this mare. All her prior wins had been with Peter and Dawn [Williams]. It seemed like I was never going to win a race with her, so to get a win and for it to be my first stakes win was just fantastic.” While Kennedy has returned to her Byerley Park base in the interim, Pour The Wine has been entrusted to the care of Riccarton trainer Lance Robinson and Kennedy said she has received positive feedback ahead of tackling the Hazlett Stakes (Listed, 1400m) on Saturday. “She has been staying down with Lance Robinson and the reports back have been that she is loving life down south, her work has been really good, they are really happy with her going into it,” she said.

HK: Straight Arron goes for gold in Centenary Vase at Sha Tin

Straight Arron (Fastnet Rock) must overcome a hefty impost in Sunday’s Centenary Vase Handicap (Gr 3, 1800m) at Sha Tin, but trainer David Hayes believes the step back in grade can prove to be a decisive factor for the contest’s highest-rated runner. Preparing to face six opponents, seven-year-old Straight Arron tops the field, rated 110 against Beauty Joy (Sebring), last year’s winner Chancheng Glory (Mor Spirit), Encountered (Churchill), Speed Dragon (Darci Brahma), Ensued (Lemon Drop Kid) and Numbers (Tivaci). Hayes, a dual Hong Kong Champion Trainer (1997/98 & 1998/99), said of Straight Arron: “I think the class will come through. If he has a good day, he can compete at this level. He’s back to his class in Group 3 racing – he’s probably a Group 3 horse.” Straight Arron was seventh and eighth, respectively, behind Romantic Warrior (Acclamation) in the Hong Kong Cup (Gr 1, 2000m) and Stewards’ Cup (Gr 1, 1600m). He was fourth in successive Group 2 races beforehand. “He was a bit disappointing [last start], but he was racing against the elite. I think he will really appreciate the drop in class, and his trackwork has been good. His work on Tuesday was very good,” Hayes said.

Maiden Of The Week

Mornington-based trainer Clayton Douglas has eyes on the South Australian Derby (Gr 1, 2500m) with Kaye Jay (Crackerjack King) after the gelding scored at the second time of asking in a maiden at Sandown-Hillside on Wednesday.

Having run second at Cranbourne over 1400 metres on January 22, the son of Crackerjack King (Shamardal) improved on that effort to beat Mr Independent (Doubtland) by 0.8 lengths under Jamie Mott.

There was a further 0.4 lengths back to the third-placed Butterscotch (The Autumn Sun).

Sire: Crackerjack King

Breeder: Mrs B K Saunders & B A E Saunders

"This horse has taken leaps and bounds from the time he arrived," the winning trainer said.

"I think he got beaten 20 or 30 lengths in his first ever jump-out. He was completely hopeless, but he has taken that improvement, and you like to see that in three-year-olds, especially staying types.

"I haven't had to train him up too much this time, he's got there himself and to run well at his first start and then win at his second, he can definitely go forward."

Douglas is now contemplating setting Kaye Jay for the South Australian Derby at Morphettville in May.

"I would like to think he could be an Adelaide Derby type," Douglas said. "He's a big, strong horse. With the facilities [of owner-breeder Barb and Barry Saunders] at Deniston Park, we can chop and change things with the Mornington stable.

"He's a horse with plenty of substance there and when he gets out to those staying trips he should really come into his own."
