Alma Vale Thoroughbreds will have one eye firmly on the racetrack and the other on the sale ring this weekend, with three of the farm’s graduates lining up in Australia’s major juvenile features on Saturday ahead of a significant draft of 22 yearlings at the Inglis Classic Sale, which begins on Sunday.

Launched in July 2023, Alma Vale has rapidly established a sizable footprint in the Hunter Valley, now operating across more than 1000 acres over three properties.

Managed by Verna Metcalfe, the farm has enjoyed notable early success since launching its standalone operation, with three two-year-olds sold across last year’s yearling sales now emerging at the top level.

What's On

The headline runner on Saturday is Star Of Jamaica, who became Newgate freshman sire Profiteer’s (Capitalist) first winner when breaking his maiden by 1.8 lengths over 1000 metres at the Sunshine Coast on January 24.

Trained by Chris and Corey Munce, the colt will be ridden by Zac Lloyd when he lines up in the $2 million Inglis Millennium (RL, 1100m) at Randwick. He was purchased for $85,000 by his trainers from Alma Vale’s draft at the 2025 Inglis Classic Yearling Sale, adding another layer of significance for the farm.

“It’s awesome,” stud manager Oscar Engelbrecht told ANZ News. “It's where we want to be, racing on the big days. For our first standalone draft, to have a runner in that race is pretty special. It will be a big day for everyone, all the team at home as well need a lot of thanks, they deserve a lot of the credit as well.”

“We sold him as a foal [for $12,000 at the Inglis Sydney Weanling Sale] and the people that bought him put him back through our Classic Yearling Sale draft, so he was born and raised with us, reared on the farm. It's nice to see them come through our system and be at the big days.”

Alma Vale will also be represented in Victoria, where Almost An Angel (So You Think) contests the Blue Diamond Prelude (F) (Gr 2, 1100m) at Caulfield. Trained by Robbie Griffiths, the filly made a perfect start to her career with an impressive debut victory over 1000 metres at Caulfield Heath in November before finishing tenth in the Merson Cooper Stakes (Listed, 1000m) later that month. She resumes following a break with Damian Lane engaged.

The daughter of So You Think (High Chaparral) was purchased by Griffiths in partnership with Peter Ford Thoroughbreds for just $30,000 at last year’s Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale, and Engelbrecht said her rise highlights the value available across the major sales.

“We've actually had a very good run with our two year olds so far. To have an $85,000 and  $30,000 yearling both pre-Christmas two-year-olds, it's a pretty big deal. They're not expensive horses, it just shows you can come to these sales and buy value, and race on the big days.”

Perhaps the most exciting runner of the day for the farm is Savage Look (Wild Ruler), who contests the Lonhro Plate (Listed, 1000m) at Randwick. A debut winner at Scone, the gelding was the first horse to race and win in Alma Vale’s new teal colours and will line up from barrier five under Reece Jones for Rodney Northam.

Purchased for $130,000 from Newgate’s draft at the 2024 Magic Millions National Weanling Sale, Savage Look was retained to race by Alma Vale after being passed in at the 2025 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale when failing to meet his $200,000 reserve.

“He was the first runner in our silks, and he obviously won his first start, so it was a big day for everyone,” Engelbrecht said. “Again, this is where we want to be at Randwick on the big days, and it's nice to see all of everyone's hard work is coming to fruition.

“Everyone's very excited, but with two year old races, you never really know. He has drawn a good gate and we'll cross our fingers.

“It's a big credit to everyone here and at home on the farm. It's why we all do it, to produce racehorses and be on these big two-year-old races.”

From Sunday, Alma Vale’s focus will turn fully to the Inglis Classic Sale at Riverside Stables, where the operation will present their 22-strong draft across the three days of selling.

One of the standout offerings is Lot 212, a filly by Stay Inside (Extreme Choice) out of Monte Invincible (I Am Invincible), herself a half-sister to Caulfield Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) winner Shooting To Win and pensioned Newgate sire Deep Field, that pair both by Northern Meteor (Encosta De Lago) and out of Listed winner Listen Here (Elusive Quality).

“Obviously, it's a huge pedigree,” Engelbrecht said. “Being out of an I Am Invincible mare who is a half sister to Shooting To Win and Deep Field. She's got a big action, and she looks like she'll go early. She's been very busy. She's the busiest horse in the draft at the moment.”

Another key lot is 674, a colt by Kia Ora Stud’s Farnan (Not A Single Doubt) out of Blonde Venture (Capitalist), a dead-heat winner of the 2022 Tasmanian Magic Millions 2YO Classic (1200m).

Blonde Venture comes from a strong black-type family featuring legendary sire Not A Single Doubt (Redoute’s Choice), Group 1 winner Oohood (I Am Invincible) and Coolmore Stud’s young sire King’s Legacy (Redoute’s Choice), and Engelbrecht expects the colt to appeal strongly to buyers seeking early speed.

Lot 444: Stay Inside/Snitzyka (Credit: Inglis)

“He’s a really nice horse out of a Magic Millions two-year-old winning Capitalist mare. He looks like he'll be a fast, early two-year-old.”

Lot 444, a colt by Stay Inside out of Snitzyka (Snitzel), has also proven popular during what has been a busy period of inspections for the farm.

“The family is speed on speed,” Engelbrecht said. “Really nice horse, he's been going down well. Stay Inside is going well, and being out of a Snitzel mare is what everyone looks for, those good broodmare sires.

“We've been run off our feet. We've done 60 cards, and it's only 1:30pm, so hopefully they all go well.”

Big Sky three-quarter sister heads MM Online Sale

Big Sky (Credit: Grant Courtney)

Podcast (Microphone), a three-quarter sister to unbeaten juvenile Big Sky (Bivouac) headlines the 41-lot Magic Millions Digital Sale, which is now open for bidding until February 11.

Podcast (Lot 41) is out of winning Red Dazzler (Red Ransom) mare Zoom By, herself a half-sister to Listed winner Firenza (Kenny's Best Pal).

Trained by Mick Price and Michael Kent Jnr, Big Sky has quickly established himself among the elite of the current two-year-old crop, sitting clear second favourite for the Blue Diamond Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) following an impressive victory in last week’s Chairman’s Stakes (Gr 3, 1000m) at Caulfield.

The MM Digital Sale has attracted strong support from a broad cross-section of vendors, including Archibald Racing, Baramul Stud, Bombora Downs, Jack Bruce Racing, Clarken Racing, Matthew Dale Racing, Darby Racing, Leneva Park, Lyndhurst Stud Farm, Morton Racing Stables, Munce Racing, Pearce Racing and the Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott stable.

Among the other highlights are two share offerings from Archibald Racing, providing buyers with opportunities to invest in elite bloodstock. Lot 26 offers a five per cent share in First Base, a colt by international superstar sire Frankel (Galileo) and a half-brother to multiple Group 1 winner Nettoyer (Sebring).

Also from the Archibald draft is Zousika (Lot 30), a colt by Zoustar (Northern Meteor) out of Group winner and Group 1-placed mare Fasika (So You Think), with a ten per cent share available.

The catalogue also features a diverse mix of racehorses, race fillies, shares, two and three-year-olds, unbroken stock, yearlings and broodmares, with more than half the offerings set to sell unreserved.

Bidding is now open and will begin closing from 12pm (QLD time) on Wednesday, February 11. To view the catalogue, click here.

Schofield confident ahead of Inglis Millennium

Chad Schofield believes a wide draw need not spell disaster for Screen Icon (Nicconi) as she tackles the $2 million Inglis Millennium (RL, 1100m) at Randwick on Saturday. The leading Sydney jockey has already won the race twice, most recently aboard Learning To Fly (Justify), who also jumped from the second outside gate. “When I won on Learning To Fly, it drew wide too,” Schofield said. “This filly is a different type. Learning To Fly sat last and rounded them up. This filly has a bit more speed, so we’ll see.” Trained by John Thompson, Screen Icon impressed on debut when narrowly missing behind Shiki (Too Darn Hot) in the Gimcrack Stakes (Gr 3, 1000m) despite covering ground throughout. Schofield, who has partnered the filly throughout her preparation, said she has returned in improved order following two trials. “She was unlucky not to win the Gimcrack. John tipped her out and she’s come back stronger,” he said. “She’s got no favours from the draw but she’ll be tough and she’ll be there late.” Schofield also teams up with Godolphin debutant Threads (Snitzel) in the Lonhro Plate (Listed, 1000m). Trained by Ciaron Maher, the colt is the first foal out of Group 3 winner Tailleur (Shooting To Win). “I think he’s very talented,” Schofield said. “He’s drawn well and could race into the juvenile features.” Schofield has a full book of ten rides at Randwick, headlined by Tempted (Street Boss) in the Eskimo Prince Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m).

Fitness the advantage for Watson in Eskimo Prince

Adrian Bott is under no illusions about the challenge awaiting Watson (Capitalist) in Saturday’s Eskimo Prince Stakes at Randwick, but believes the emerging three-year-old’s race fitness could prove a key asset. Watson is unbeaten in two starts this preparation for Bott and Gai Waterhouse, opening with a decisive win at Kembla Grange before backing it up with an equally dominant performance at Canterbury. Bott said the improvement has followed a gelding procedure at the conclusion of the horse’s first campaign. “He was gelded after that first prep and that’s been a big factor in what we’ve seen since,” Bott said. “His two runs back have been excellent. He wasn’t coltish, but mentally things weren’t quite clicking. Being gelded has helped him focus and bring what we were seeing at home to the races.” Watson faces a deep field of seven rivals, including Golden Rose Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) placegetters Wodeton (Wootton Bassett) and Tempted, stakes winner Napoleonic (Wootton Bassett) and topweight Rivellino (Too Darn Hot), all resuming. “That race fitness is his biggest advantage,” Bott said. “He’s coming off two nice wins and there’s still improvement to come.” Tulloch Lodge will be represented in the $2 million Inglis Millennium by Plagiarism (Written By), who Bott says compares favourably with 2024 winner Fully Lit (Hellbent), both raced by RedFox Racing. Tim Clark will partner both runners.

Derby winner Observer kicks off at Caulfield

Observer (Credit: Sportpix)

The Ciaron Maher stable is aiming to prove Observer (Ghaiyyath) can add a mile Group 1 to his resume as the VRC Derby (Gr 1, 2500m) winner embarks on his autumn campaign. The Godolphin-owned three-year-old stamped himself as a top-class stayer in the spring when taking out the Derby, and connections are now keen to demonstrate his versatility over shorter trips. Maher has previously executed a similar path with Hitotsu (Maurice), who backed up a Derby victory by winning the Australian Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) at Flemington during the 2021–22 season. Observer is now on the same trajectory. Rather than first-up at a mile, Observer will resume in Saturday’s Autumn Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m) at Caulfield before progressing to the Guineas at Flemington on February 28. “He’s come back and looks in really good form,” Maher’s national assistant trainer Jack Turnbull said. “His jump-outs have been quicker than last prep and the data we’re getting has been encouraging. Running him over 1400 metres first-up gives us confidence going into the Guineas second-up, which should be ideal.” Observer was an unlucky third in the Caulfield Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) behind Autumn Boy (The Autumn Sun) last spring. “Our aim is to make him a mile-winning Group 1 colt,” Turnbull said. “If he could win the Australian Guineas, Sydney could come into play, but for now it’s very much a two-race program.”

Alpha Sofie all set for return

Peter Moody and Katherine Coleman will roll out the first of their talented trio of three-year-old fillies when Alpha Sofie (Capitalist) resumes in Saturday’s Peter Le Grand Stakes (Gr 3, 1100m) at Caulfield. The filly will make her first appearance since September, having been spelled after making an immediate impact for the stable last spring. Alpha Sofie had won twice at Eagle Farm for former trainer Jason Edwards before transferring to Victoria, where she scored convincingly on stable debut at The Valley. Coleman said the stable has been pleased with how the filly has returned. “I think she’s improved,” Coleman said. “Her work and jump-outs leading into this run have been really impressive. She won very comfortably at her only run for us and it was a good form race. The break has done her well and she seems more mature and stronger.” Alpha Sofie’s Valley success came in the Atlantic Jewel Stakes (Listed, 1200m), where she accounted for stablemate Ole Dancer (Ole Kirk), who later claimed the Thousand Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m). Meanwhile, fellow stablemate Sheza Alibi (Saxon Warrior) emerged as another top-class filly, winning during Melbourne Cup week before running away with the Sandown Guineas (Gr 2, 1600m). “Alpha Sofie’s the first one we’re unleashing,” Coleman said. “All being well, Sheza Alibi and Ole Dancer will be back at the races next week.” Sheza Alibi is set for the Desirable Stakes (Listed, 1400m), while Ole Dancer will contest the Frances Tressady Stakes (Gr 3, 1400m), both at Flemington.

Premier’s Plate test for Guru Warrior

Andrew Gluyas believes Saturday’s Premier’s Plate (Listed, 2000m) at Morphettville presents the right opportunity to introduce Guru Warrior (Saxon Warrior) to stakes company, though the trainer is approaching the assignment with measured confidence. The promising stayer will be having his first start since extending his winning streak to four on November 15, but Gluyas conceded minor interruptions to the preparation have tempered expectations. “He’s missed a bit of work leading in,” Gluyas said. “I was hoping to get a jump-out or a trial into him, maybe even another run, but I had to hold him up slightly. I would’ve liked a bit more conditioning going in, but his form has been good and it’s a nice chance for him to step up to Listed grade.” Guru Warrior’s most recent victory came in Benchmark 78 company over 2250 metres, his third consecutive win as an odds-on favourite. His four wins have been achieved by a combined margin just shy of eight lengths. “He hasn’t been doing everything completely right, so he’s not the finished product yet,” Gluyas said. “Once he got out to 2000 metres, that’s where he really hit his straps. He travels well and that’s what gives us confidence.” Stablemate Arugamama (Churchill) also lines up, with Gluyas pleased with her progress ahead of her first run since November. “She’s had some really positive trials and jump-outs and I think she’s ready to perform well fresh,” he said. Jacob Opperman rides Guru Warrior (55.5kg), while Taylor Johnstone partners Arugamama (58kg).

Maher launches two-pronged Hobart Cup attack

The Ciaron Maher stable has turned to a familiar formula in a bid to return Strawberry Rock (Rock Of Gibraltar) to winning form as he defends his title in Sunday’s Hobart Cup (Gr 3, 2400m). The nine-year-old defeated former stablemate Promises Kept (Cluster) in the race last year, and assistant trainer Jack Turnbull said the decision to base the gelding out of Seven Mile Beach has been key to the preparation. “He’s been down there about a month just to get some speed back in his legs,” Turnbull said. “Last year he was only treading water before he went there and he really came on once he did. He was racing quite dour, so the aim was to sharpen him up again and hopefully we’ve achieved that.” Strawberry Rock has not won since last year’s Hobart Cup, though he did finish second in the Mornington Cup (Listed, 2400m) last April. He was last seen finishing 1.7 lengths from the winner in the Bagot Handicap (Listed, 2800m) at Flemington on December 31. Turnbull said the Seven Mile Beach training environment closely mirrors the stable’s Cranbourne base. “They live in sand yards, the bush tracks are fantastic and you’ve got access to the beach,” he said. “It’s deeper sand and you can incorporate wading through water.”

Tennis star Nick Kyrgios bags first winner at Canberra

Nick Kyrgios (Credit: Thoroughbred Park)

Australian tennis star Nick Kyrgios enjoyed a memorable first day at the races on Friday after seeing his horse Divine Secrets (Deep Field) break her maiden at Canberra.

It was the first time the former world No. 13 and Wimbledon finalist has attended the races to watch one of his own runners, and the Peter Snowden-trained filly duly obliged under Andrew Adkins on what was her fourth career start, taking the 1200-metre contest by 0.6 lengths over Pappa Blue (Almanzor).

Divine Secrets delivered the win for Kyrgios as part of the Capri Racing syndicate, who purchased the daughter of Deep Field (Northern Meteor) for $100,000 out of the Cambridge Stud draft at the 2024 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale.

Kyrgios, who has been managing a comeback from significant injuries and opted out of singles competition at the recent Australian Open to focus on doubles, is also a part-owner of Seeiaye (Russian Revolution), a $65,000 buy for Capri Racing and Snowden who most recently finished fourth in the Magic Millions Wyong 2YO Classic (RL, 1200m) in December.

The Russian Revolution (Snitzel) colt has since stepped out in a Rosehill barrier trial, finishing third to subsequent Widden Stakes (Gr 3, 1100m) fifth placegetter Krasina (Russian Revolution).

Dad And Dave takes out Tasmanian Derby

Dad And Dave (3 c Time Test – Nymenche, by Rip Van Winkle) delivered Ciaron Maher his second Tasmanian Derby (Listed, 2200m) on Friday when he powered to victory in the three-year-old feature at Elwick. The son of Time Test (Dubawi) became the seventh horse to complete the Launceston Guineas (Listed, 2000m)-Tasmanian Derby double, adding his name to an elite honour roll. Maher’s previous success in the race came in 2021 with Explosive Jack (Jakkalberry), trained in partnership with David Eustace. Stable representative Nikki White said the gelding has continued to exceed expectations. “He’s been a bit of a dark horse,” White said. “We didn’t screw him down at home, but we knew he had the potential to get out in trip and it’s paid off. When I saw him three-wide, I thought you’d have to ride him a bit ugly to produce him, and that’s exactly what happened.” Despite a wide draw, jockey Eoin Walsh was able to slot the $3.30 favourite into a midfield position one off the fence before gradually building momentum from the three-wide line approaching the home turn. Dad And Dave asserted late to score by 0.8 lengths over Colizzi (Ace High), with Helioson (The Autumn Sun) a further half-length away in third. “He was the best stayer in the race today,” Walsh said. “It was a genuine tempo and once I popped out, he really got rolling.” White said further Derby targets remain a possibility. “We’ll see how he comes through it and make a plan from there.”

Shiki returns at Canterbury juvenile trials

The Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott-trained Gimcrack Stakes winner Shiki returned at the Canterbury trials on Friday, winning her heat in expected fashion following a midfield finish in the Magic Millions 2YO Classic (RL, 1200m) last month. The Too Darn Hot (Dubawi) filly’s effort was the fastest of the four juvenile heats, beating Doubella (Doubtland) by 2.5 lengths. Also impressive was the Anthony and Sam Freedman-trained $1 million Snitzel (Redoute’s Choice) colt Avengers, who claimed his heat by 1.5 lengths wearing first-time blinkers. Bred by Arrowfield Stud, he is closely related to Redoute’s Choice’s (Danehill) sire-sons Not A Single Doubt and King’s Legacy and was secured by China Horse Club, Newgate and partners at the 2025 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale. His yearling half-brother by Dundeel (High Chaparral) is catalogued as Lot 22 at the upcoming Inglis Premier Sale. Winning his second trial from as many outings was the John O’Shea and Tom Charlton-trained gelding Concrete Storm (Hello Youmzain). A $120,000 Karaka Book 1 purchase, he is out of a winning sister to Group 3 winner Showbeel (Savabeel) and hails from the family of Group 1 winner Showella (Lord Ballina). Another winner for the Freedman stable was Wolf Gap (Palace Pier), who charged home to score by 1.4 lengths. A $280,000 Magic Millions buy from Arrowfield, he is a half-brother to Group 3-placed Katsumi Orochi (Maurice). His dam Bandol (Snitzel) has now produced three winners from three runners, with her Maurice (Screen Hero) colt entered for the Magic Millions Gold Coast March Sale as Lot 65.

New Zealand

First for Pinatubo

Darley shuttler Pinatubo (Shamardal) sired his first southern hemisphere-bred winner when the Pinafore (2 f ex Before Dawn, by Darci Brahma) got off the mark at the third time of asking in a 1000-metre contest at Tauherenikau on Friday. Trained by Lisa Latta, the filly defeated Perfect Chaos (Hello Youmzain) by 1.7 lengths with Honour Roll (Savabeel) finishing another 2.6 lengths back in third. A NZ$45,000 pickup for her trainer from the Wentwood Grange draft at Book 1 of the New Zealand Bloodstock Karaka Yearling Sale last year, the filly is out of a winning half-sister to Listed winner At The Heads (Hussonet). Pinatubo covered 90 mares at Darley’s Kelvinside base in the spring at a fee of $38,500 (inc GST).

Nigella Lane gets revenge at Tauherenikau

Nigella Lane (Credit: Race Images)

The Ralph Manning-trained Nigella Lane (6 m Niagara – Casabella Lane by Volksraad) atoned for her second-placed finish in last year’s Wairarapa Thoroughbred Breeders Stakes (Listed, 1600m) when she won Friday’s renewal of the Listed contest. Ridden by Bruno Queiroz, the mare defeated Khanshe (Mongolian Khan) by 0.2 lengths with a further 0.1 lengths back to Hi Yo Sass Bomb (Complacent) in third. “She is very professional,” Queiroz said. “I watched the replay before and I spoke with the boy [Rihaan Goyaram] who rode her in her last start. She is so professional, is very good to ride and had a strong finish.” It was the second stakes victory of her career, having won the Rotorua Cup (Listed, 2200m) last May, while she has also placed in the Manawatu Breeders’ Stakes (Gr 3, 2050m) and Kaimai Stakes (Listed, 2000m). The victory capped a pleasing day for trainer Ralph Manning, who scored a treble on the eight-race card, having earlier won with Finest Hour (Derryn) in the Kuripuni Sports Bar & TAB (1000m) and Midnight Train (Yes Yes Yes) in the Pope & Gray Contractors Maiden (1300m).

Less travel to suit Group 1 hope Tomodachi

Tomodachi’s (Tarzino) connections are banking on a target closer to home to bring out the best in the gifted mare on Saturday. While she wasn’t disgraced when a resuming fourth in the Telegraph (Gr 1, 1200m), more was expected and she gets an opportunity to bounce back in the BCD Group Sprint (Gr 1, 1400m) at Te Rapa. “We thought she would be more competitive,” said Andrew Scott, who trains the Sir Peter Vela-bred and raced five-year-old with Lance O’Sullivan. “We just didn’t think she travelled down as well as we would have hoped and we’ve seen her better in condition on race day. She hasn’t got that travel complication this weekend and that heartens us for a more competitive performance.” Tomodachi is a winner on the course and will be reunited with Joe Doyle, whose past race day rides on the mare resulted in victory in the Rotorua Stakes (Gr 3, 1400m) and third in the Proisir Plate (Gr 1, 1400m) last spring. “She has worked to her normal high standards and certainly brightened up after a quiet week post-Wellington,” Scott said. “She’s in good condition and 1400 metres doesn’t hold any fears for us, the strength of the field does but she has won around Te Rapa before. She’ll have to turn in a personal best to be right among it, but we know she’s got a good load of talent when things go her way.”

Gordon hoping for Herbie Dyke upset with He’s A Battler

He’s A Battler (He’s Remarkable) is viewed as the outsider in Saturday’s Herbie Dyke Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m) at Te Rapa, but anything can happen in horse racing and trainer Suzy Gordon is daring to dream of an upset in the $700,000 feature. The lightly-raced eight-year-old has established a tidy record, winning seven of his 25 starts, albeit four on the synthetic, including his last-start over 2100 metres on the Riccarton Synthetic at the start of December. “I know a lot of his wins have been on the synthetic, and he loves the synthetic, but he goes alright on the grass too,” Gordon said. The wet summer thwarted Gordon’s initial summer plans, with the Horowhenua horsewoman having hoped to give He’s A Battler a couple of stakes hit-outs before the Herbie Dyke. “We were targeting him at a few races,” she said. “There was the Manawatu Cup, Marton Cup and every time we would set him for something it would rain. He’s no good on a wettish track. It would have been nice to have run him in one of those to see where he is and whether he can measure up. It wasn’t meant to be, so now he’s being thrown in the deep end.” He’s A Battler’s first stakes assignment will now be at elite-level, and while it will also be Gordon’s first time lining up a horse in a Group 1, she said the task is less daunting given his juicy odds – $101 with TAB bookmakers. “Being a 100-1 shot it’s not too bad. At least I don’t have too many expectations, it is just nice to have a horse in it,” she said. “He’s very well, but he’s nine weeks between runs and has only had a quiet jump-out, so hopefully he’s fit enough. He goes best fresh.”

Greene out to capture home riches

David Greene can’t wait to head to Te Rapa on Saturday, when he will be chasing $1.1 million in prize-money with a trio of runners. “It is brilliant,” Greene said. “We have got the three runners running for $1.1 million, it’s a really good indication of what has happened to the stakes in these good races over the last couple of years.” His charge will be headed by last-start Telegraph winner First Five (Almanzor), who will be looking to rebuff the Australian raid of Lindsay Park duo Arkansaw Kid (Harry Angel) and defending champ Here To Shock (Shocking) in the BCD Group Sprint. Greene couldn’t have been any happier with the Almanzor (Wootton Bassett) gelding’s Trentham heroics last month and he has been thrilled with the way he has progressed. “He recovered well from his trip away to Wellington and it has been business as usual for him ever since,” he said. “He goes into Saturday back at his favourite distance and in the best form of his life, so it is very exciting.” Greene will also saddle Sweet Ice (Frosted) in the Waikato Guineas (Gr 2, 2000m), while the trainer will also be represented by Bethany Dee (Embellish) in the $350,000 Sir Patrick Hogan Karapiro Classic (1600m).

HK: Numbers bids to boost Four-Year-Old Class Series credentials

Frankie Lor is confident promising Australian import Numbers (Tivaci) can tick multiple boxes when he contests Sunday’s HK$4.2 million Centenary Vase Handicap (Gr 3, 1800m) at Sha Tin. Numbers is being aimed at both the HK$13 million Hong Kong Classic Cup (Listed, 1800m) on March 1 and the HK$26 million Hong Kong Derby (Listed, 2000m) on March 22, and Lor believes a first Group success in Hong Kong is well within reach, with the gelding set to carry just 115lb under Derek Leung. “He looks good and everything is in order,” Lor said. “He trialled well and his work has been good. We have a light weight, which I hope will help him. This race will tell us where he’s at heading toward the Classic Cup and the Derby.” Formerly trained in Australia by John O'Shea and Tom Charlton under the name King Of Thunder, Numbers was runner-up to his then stablemate Maison Louis (Super Seth) in the 2025 Queensland Derby (Gr 1, 2400m). He has raced twice in Hong Kong for a third at Happy Valley before an all-the-way Class 2 victory over 2000 metres at Sha Tin. Rated 90, he will aim to deliver Lor a third Hong Kong Classic Cup win against six rivals, including last year’s winner Changcheng Glory (Mor Spirit).

UK: Progressive Space Invasion tops Tattersalls trade at 230,000gns

A three-way bidding duel saw the progressive Space Invasion (Space Blues) top this year’s Tattersalls February Sale, becoming the second-most expensive colt ever sold at the auction when going for 230,000gns. The closing stages featured two online bidders alongside an in-ring challenge from a client of agent Alessandro Marconi, before the hammer fell to SackvilleDonald. Agent Alastair Donald confirmed the two-time winner was purchased for established Bahraini connections. Space Invasion will race in the colours of Shaikh Isa bin Salman and will be trained by Daniel Kubler and Claire Kubler. Formerly trained by Richard Hannon, Space Invasion showed marked improvement at the end of his British campaign, recording back-to-back wins over a mile at Lingfield. He followed a maiden success with a dominant handicap debut, defying an opening mark of 80 to score by one-and-three-quarter lengths from Luminare (Dark Angel), with Sovereign Wealth (Frankel) – who topped trade on Thursday when selling for 100,00gns – further back in third. Space Invasion earned a Racing Post Rating (RPR) of 81 for that performance. “Shaikh Isa is keen to support Daniel and Claire, who’ve had a great start in Bahrain,” Donald said. Bred by Rathbride Farm, Space Invasion is the third foal out of the Listed-placed Peticoatgovernment (Holy Roman Emperor), a half-sister to Group 2 winner Larchmont Lad (Footstepsinthesand). “Horses like this don’t often appear at this sale,” Donald said. “He’s progressive, well-rated and ideally suited to Bahrain.”

UK: 100,000gns Sovereign Wealth tops Tattersalls February Sale opener

Tattersalls opened for business for 2026 with a routine day of February Sale trade on Thursday. The leading light came late in the piece when agent Ted Durcan bid 100,000gns (approx. AU$204,050) for George Boughey’s recent Wolverhampton novice winner Sovereign Wealth. The three-year-old son of Frankel (Galileo) hit a peak RPR of 78 for that breakthrough success, for which he carried the colours of Forz Europe, the banner that Ace Stud races its European string under. He previously ran for Zhang Yuesheng, having been picked up by Yulong Investments as a 450,000gns Book 1 yearling in 2024. Sovereign Wealth was last seen finishing third in a mile handicap at Lingfield from an official mark of 77. Durcan was shopping on behalf of an ownership group who have already enjoyed success with a previous Tattersalls purchase in the shape of UAE 2,000 Guineas (Gr 3, 1600m) scorer Six Speed (Not This Time). “He’s been bought for Blue Blood Racing, the previous owners of Six Speed,” said Durcan. “Obviously they did extremely well with him. They sold him on so they were very anxious to reinvest, and this horse will be going back out to Bhupat Seemar. The lads themselves had him earmarked, I had him earmarked, and he vetted out extremely well. He’s very well-bred, a nice, solid individual and he’s still a young horse, so we hope there’s some upside to him.”

UK: Prior hails positive start to Tattersalls Sale year

Momentum built through the second session of the Tattersalls February Sale, with day two delivering solid year-on-year growth across key metrics despite a reduced catalogue. Turnover on day two climbed 23 per cent to 1,776,000gns, while the average surged 31 per cent to 17,940gns. The median also strengthened notably, lifting 25 per cent from 8,000gns to 10,000gns. Clearance held firm at 88 per cent, with 99 lots sold from 113 offered. Across the two-day fixture, aggregate receipts reached 3,639,000gns, down eight per cent on 2025’s total but achieved from 15 fewer sold lots. The overall average of 17,840gns and median of 11,000gns were broadly in line with last year’s figures, while the combined clearance rate settled at 83 per cent, with 204 of 246 lots changing hands. Tattersalls managing director Matthew Prior said the sale again underlined its standing as Europe’s leading midwinter auction. “While the key metrics fell narrowly short of last year’s figures, buyers from more than 20 countries and turnover in excess of 3.5 million guineas represents a positive start to 2026,” Prior said. He also highlighted the strong international demand behind Space Invasion’s 230,000gns sale, along with continued support from major consignors including Godolphin and Juddmonte. Tattersalls now turns its attention to the Craven Breeze-Up Sale, which takes place April 13-15.
