Grinzinger Heart looks to show some ticker in the Talindert

A glowing post-trial report from Craig Williams combined with his own lofty opinion of Grinzinger Heart (Toronado) has persuaded Ben Brisbourne to throw the juvenile filly in at the deep end in Saturday’s Talindert Stakes (Listed, 1100m) at Flemington where the English ex-pat trainer hopes to make his black type breakthrough.

The Wangaratta-based horseman, who branched out on his own in 2018 after cutting his training teeth at Lindsay Park, has previously come close to sampling stakes success with five minor placings to his name, but victory has so far eluded him on the big stage.

However, with Victoria’s autumn carnival being officially unveiled at Flemington, there would be no better time to crack the code and, buoyed by Williams’ effusive praise after Grinzinger Heart’s recent tune-up at Caulfield, the 36-year-old is quietly confident that his dynamic debutante may just be the horse to give his burgeoning operation lift-off.

Unfortunately for Brisbourne and Grinzinger Heart’s owner John Wheeler, who purchased Lot 69 for $110,000 at last year’s Magic Millions Gold Coast National Yearling Sale, Williams is unavailable to continue their association having recently collected a careless riding suspension.

What's On

The champion jockey will be replaced in the saddle by Mick Dee, the New Zealand native who is bidding to land another statement win with a novice juvenile having partnered the Danny O’Brien-trained colt Closer To Free (Street Boss) to a debut victory at Caulfield last week.

Earlier this year Grinzinger Heart chased home Closer To Free in a Wodonga jump-out, so it would represent quite the coincidence if that low-key event were to prove one of the form contests of the autumn by producing the winners of the Blue Diamond Prelude (C&G) (Gr 3, 1100m) and the Talindert on successive Saturdays.

“She jumped out really nicely behind Closer To Free at Wodonga, so we’re certainly hoping that form holds up on Saturday,” Brisbourne told ANZ News shortly before saddling up Iced Poppy (Frosted) to victory at Kyneton on Tuesday.

“Adrian Corboy [who sold Closer To Free to O’Brien] broke our filly in and he said she had shown plenty of promise right from the start. She’s certainly done nothing wrong since joining us, she’s very straightforward to train and after her most recent trial at Caulfield, Craig [Williams] gave her a glowing report.

“Going on her work at home and her trials, we think she’s ready to make a good start to her career on Saturday so hopefully she can put her hand up like Closer To Free did last week. She hasn’t seen the straight at Flemington before so she’ll have to go there and handle that, but the same probably applies to most horses in the race.

“Nothing seems to faze her and she’s not just your typical jump-and-run two-year-old, she’s got a bit more scope and versatility than that so hopefully her class can shine through in the last 200 metres.”

On the subject of class, the $175,000 Talindert was won (jointly) last year by Tentyris (Street Boss), the crack colt who bids to claim his second Group 1 success in the Black Caviar Lightning (1000m) on the same Flemington program.

His dramatic dead-heat with Shining Smile (Spirit Of Boom) extended the winning streak of colts and geldings in the Talindert Stakes over the past decade, with only 2022 victor I’mlovin’ya (Capitalist) - who subsequently joined Widden Stud’s elite broodmare band - able to break the male domination in that period.

Moreover, the training talent on the recent Talindert honour roll reads like a who’s who of Australian racing, with household names such as Hayes, Freedman, Cummings (twice), Moody and Hawkes (twice) having been all etched onto the trophy.

Nothing seems to faze her and she’s not just your typical jump-and-run two-year-old, she’s got a bit more scope and versatility than tha

Ben Brisbourne

Both Grinzinger Heart, whose half-brother Banjora (I Am Invincible) has won two from two for Warwick Farm-based trainer Bryce Heys, and her relatively unheralded trainer will therefore need to defy the weight of history at Flemington on Saturday.

Regardless of whether or not she can make a dream start to her career, however, Brisbourne believes her professionalism should stand the Lustre Lodge-bred filly in very good stead.

“She’s still learning like all two-year-olds, but she certainly hasn’t made many mistakes so far,” said Brisbourne, whose father Mark was a successful trainer in his native England.

“She’s a big, scopey type of filly who looks like she will get over further ground in time, that was Craig’s opinion and her pedigree would also suggest that. Even though she’s forward enough to run very well on Saturday, we think she’s a filly for the future so we won’t be asking too much of her this prep.

“We don’t have a firm plan in mind for her, so we’ll just let her tell us how far she’s able to go because I don’t think we’ll see the best of her until she turns three and older.”

For a reasonably small trainer with only a comparatively moderately buying budget at his disposal, Brisbourne has certainly punched above his weight in the Talindert with both his previous runners having finished in the minor money. Hell Queen (Hellbent) ran second to Grahame Begg’s Maharba (Pride Of Dubai) in the 2023 Talindert, and one year later Reasonable Point (Blue Point) finished in the same position.

Since then Suparazi (Super One) has assumed the mantle of the stable’s flagbearer, running second to subsequent Group 1 winner Jimmysstar in the Weekend Hustler Stakes (Listed, 1400m) during the 2024 Spring Racing Carnival before just failing to foil Gringotts, Jimmysstar’s Ciaron Maher-trained stablemate and a fellow son of Per Incanto (Street Cry), in both the $3 million Big Dance (1600m) and $1 million The Gong (1600m).

It’s almost impossible to line up the form in the Talindert but I’d like to think Grinzinger Heart can measure up on Saturday

Ben Brisbourne

Alas, despite saluting the judge on seven occasions and amassing more than $1.1 million in prize-money in the process, Suparazi has been unable to land a stakes win so the task of bringing up this major milestone for the stable may fall to a filly five years his junior.

Like any sport, the line between success and failure in racing can be razor thin and its rich tapestry is littered with the tales of nearly men and women for whom glory remained tantalisingly out of reach, but Brisbourne - whose affable nature hides a steely conviction - is determined to ensure that he does not join them.

“It would be massive for the stable to get our first stakes winner,” said Brisbourne, who is hoping to claim a Grinzinger double for Wheeler on Saturday with stablemate Grinzinger Pod (Calyx) set to run at Morphettville.

“We’ve come close to a stakes win on a fair few occasions in the past, so hopefully our time can come very soon. It’s almost impossible to line up the form in the Talindert but I’d like to think Grinzinger Heart can measure up on Saturday, provided she can build on her potential. Having said that, they’re all champions before they hit the racetrack and the winning post is the most accurate assessment of a horse’s ability, but she’s certainly one of the better young horses we’ve had in the stable.

“We don’t have the resources to compete at the sales with some of the bigger stables, which is why I wasn’t at the Inglis Classic Sale this week. So that makes it harder but it’s great when you have owners like John [Wheeler] who can introduce two of three young horses into our system. I also really like a filly called Love Me Tomorrow who will make her debut at Kilmore on Friday, she’s jumped out very nicely so hopefully she can get the weekend off to a good start.”

Big Sky's three-quarter sister tops Magic Millions Digital Sale

Podcast is a three-quarter sister to Blue Diamond favourite Big Sky (Credit: Magic Millions)

Podcast (Microphone), a three-quarter sister to the current favourite for Saturday week's Blue Diamond Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m), topped the Magic Millions Digital Sale that concluded on Wednesday.

A dual winning four-year-old daughter of Microphone (Exceed And Excel), Podcast was purchased by Hong Kong-based Hall of Fame Bloodstock for $85,000.

The Newington Farm-offered mare is a three-quarter sister to Big Sky (Bivouac) who is unbeaten in two runs for the Mick Price and Michael Kent Jnr stable and is the $4 favourite for the Blue Diamond.

Podcast and Big Sky's dam Zoom By (Red Dazzler), a four-time winner, is herself a half-sister to Firenza (Kenny’s Best Pal) and Beauty World (Danehill Dancer) - the dam of stakes winners Hi World (High Chaparral), Lite'n In My Veins (Henrythenavigator), Written Beauty (Written Tycoon), Ducimus (Snitzel) and Loveyamadly (Bel Esprit).

"Our team is ecstatic with the result," Julian Blaxland, representing vendor Newington Farm, said. "From the moment we entered her in the sale, the Magic Millions Digital team worked hard and marketed her so well to try and maximise our return.”

There was spirited bidding across a number of lots with Western Australian trainer Ryan Hill pleased with his returns including the 26-bid result for Marines Cry (Long Leaf), who sold for $13,000.

"We're very happy with the results," Hill said. "She is a good filly but her sale price exceeded our expectations.”

Entries for the next Magic Millions Digital (February 27 to March 4) Sale open on Thursday and close on February 25. To lodge an entry click here.

Douglas confident Giga Kick primed for Lightning Stakes

Giga Kick (Credit: Racing Photos)

Clayton Douglas has Giga Kick (Scissor Kick) primed and ready to launch another autumn campaign when the veteran sprinter resumes in Saturday’s Black Caviar Lightning (Gr 1, 1000m) at Flemington. The gelding will kick off his preparation down the straight before heading to Sydney, with Douglas admitting there was a strong possibility the rising seven-year-old might not have returned to racing had last spring unfolded differently. "He had a big last year, and you always worry whether they're going to come back, a horse like him at six, rising seven," the trainer said. "If he hadn't of performed last spring, we aren't the type of people that would keep going with him, and there's been multiple times where it's been touch and go with him, for sure, but to see him perform as he did, it showed he's still got that zest for racing. He was a bit wishy-washy in his first couple of runs back in Sydney [spring 2024] and we were wondering where he was at and then he ran really well in The Everest. Then again, he didn't have the best of luck in The Goodwood and then he went up to Queensland, and it was only a fair run. I'm hopeful that we've still got another 18 months, two years, left in him, and this time I feel he's had the ideal preparation. The key is keeping him in good order, feeling good, and hopefully he does the rest."

Kennewell eyes Australian Guineas path for Loud Charlie

Lloyd Kennewell is aiming high with progressive three-year-old Loud Charlie (Prague), who is set to step up to black type company in Saturday’s CS Hayes Stakes (Gr 3, 1400m) at Flemington following an impressive maiden win at Sandown. The son of Prague (Redoute’s Choice) created a strong impression when breaking through on January 28 at his second start, having finished runner-up to Asakura (Churchill) on debut at Terang earlier in the month, and Kennewell believes the gelding is continuing to improve with racing. "He's on the up," the trainer said. "His sectionals were very good the other day. I've always liked him as a horse, but he's just got to keep climbing the ladder at this time of the year, so we'll give him his chance as they're only three once. The Guineas is there for him potentially afterwards, but we'll see what happens Saturday, but he's in good order and he'll be thereabouts." A field of 13 has accepted for the traditional Australian Guineas lead-up, with Loud Charlie drawn in gate 12 and Jamie Mott to retain the ride.

Autumn Glow set for Apollo resumption

Chris Waller’s experience has taught him not to get caught up in unbeaten streaks ahead of the return of star mare Autumn Glow (The Autumn Sun) in Saturday’s Apollo Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m) at Randwick. The unbeaten four-year-old, who is chasing a ninth straight victory, has opened a dominant favourite but Waller insists his priority is ensuring she resumes in peak condition rather than preserving her flawless record. "I have been in that territory before," the trainer said. "She is prepared for next week exactly how she would have been prepared last week. She's not screwed down and with room for improvement. And when she gets beaten it will be bad luck, not through ability." The Apollo Stakes has drawn a field of ten runners, including six from the Waller stable, with Autumn Glow to jump from gate nine following two barrier trials and an exhibition gallop at Randwick last Saturday. "She has come back well, basically where she left off," Waller said. "Everything has gone to plan so far. Two trials, a nice easy gallop today and James [McDonald] is very happy. He said she was never out of second gear." Autumn Glow is expected to progress through the Verry Elleegant Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) and George Ryder Stakes (Gr 1, 1500m) this preparation, with options later in the autumn including the Queen Of The Turf Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) and potentially the Queen Elizabeth Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m).

Apocalyptic primed for Light Fingers

Michael Freedman is keeping a lid on expectations but admits he is eager to see high-class filly Apocalyptic (Extreme Choice) return in Saturday’s Light Fingers Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) at Randwick, where she shapes as a key player on the road to the Surround Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m). The three-year-old resumes a week after fellow filly Tempted (Street Boss) set an early autumn benchmark with a dominant Eskimo Prince Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) victory over the same course and distance, setting up the potential for a mouth-watering clash later this month. "I guess there will be the prospect of us locking horns in the Surround," Freedman said. "They're animals, so I never get too far ahead of myself, and I certainly never get over-confident with any horse. But I'm very happy with her and looking forward to getting her back to the track." Freedman acknowledged the filly’s rapid rise through the grades had made a strong impression. "When you break your maiden in a Group 2, and then win a Group 2 and a Group 1 at your next two, you don't see it too often," he said. "From a trainers' point of view, when you get horses like that around you, it's exciting."

Manaal set for swansong campaign

Group 1 winner Manaal (Tassort) is poised to begin what is expected to be her final racing campaign, with Michael Freedman weighing up options in Saturday’s Expressway Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) or Triscay Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) at Randwick. A consistent performer for the stable across multiple seasons, the Emirates Park-owned mare is being aimed at further black type success before heading to the breeding barn later this year. "This will probably be her last campaign, I'd suggest, before she goes off to the breeding barn, so I'd love to try to pick up another stakes win for the Emirates group," Freedman said. "She has been here since the Gimcrack and she's still matching strides [with the better mares]. She's never been what you call a headliner, but it's rare to see them win before Christmas, a stakes winner at two, stakes winner at three and then a stakes winner at four. It's a pretty good resume."

Treasurethe Moment on track for Futurity

Treasurethe Moment (Credit: Racing Photos)

Matt Laurie is weighing up another trip to Caulfield with Treasurethe Moment (Alabama Express) as she builds towards her first-up assignment in the Futurity Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) next Saturday. The mare stepped out in a 1000-metre jump-out at Caulfield Heath on Wednesday, rolling to the front under Damian Lane and leading throughout, a scenario Laurie admitted was not ideal but still pleasing. "I was hoping there would be a horse or two in there that would charge along, but unfortunately those ones were scratched," the trainer said. "It seemed likely that she would lead and she was quick away, but that's the sort of horse she is, she gets there but comes off the bit, just touching the bridle. She doesn't work too hard, she relaxes beautifully. She was asked to quicken up a bit in the last two furlongs, and she did that well and Damian was happy." With Caulfield hosting official gallops next Tuesday ahead of the Blue Diamond (Gr 1, 1200m), Futurity Stakes and Oakleigh Plate (Gr 1, 1100m) meeting, Laurie said he may return with the mare for a final hit-out as he looks to mirror the preparation that preceded her first-up Memsie Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) success over the same course and distance. "Another trip away for her final gallop wouldn't hurt and then we're ready to go," Laurie said. "She's done a lot of galloping at Mornington, so one more trip away would be great, but if not, we've got a great surface down there anyway. But either way, I'm happy with the prep so far and if she can produce what she did last time, she will be right there."

Jimmysstar building towards William Reid

Three-time Group 1 winner Jimmysstar (Per Incanto) is on track for an autumn return, with the William Reid Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) at Caulfield on March 21 shaping as an early-season target for the Ciaron Maher-trained sprinter. The six-year-old gelding has thrived at Caulfield, signing off his spring campaign with victory in the CF Orr Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m), and regular rider Ethan Brown believes the Kiwi import has returned in outstanding order following a patient preparation. “He’s flying. He had his first little run-up on Tuesday, and he has had a very long slow build-up,” Brown said. “They’re taking their time with him but he is as good as ever. He is just at a prime age now and he has proved himself over these last couple of preparations. His whole demeanor has improved. He knows his job and he is very relaxed and he is unreal at the moment.” Jimmysstar has played a key role in Brown’s rise through the riding ranks, with the jockey set for a short Hong Kong stint later in the year that will not interrupt the gelding’s campaign. “When I was growing up you would see these top-tier jockeys who follow these good horses through and to be in that position to follow one through is unreal,” Brown said.

Group 1-winning juvenile star Cool Archie retired

Brilliant Group 1-winning colt Cool Archie (Cool Aza Beel), regarded as one of Queensland’s most exciting juveniles in recent years, has been retired from racing after sustaining a significant leg injury. Owner Max Whitby confirmed the decision following extensive veterinary assessments, ending the career of the Chris and Corey Munce-trained colt whose five-race winning streak as a two-year-old culminated in a dominant victory in the JJ Atkins (Gr 1, 1600m). Cool Archie’s rise through the ranks came in a single, explosive preparation, progressing from maiden company to elite level and earning Queensland Two-Year-Old Horse of the Year honours, while many observers felt he was unlucky not to secure the national title. Bred on the Savabeel (Zabeel) sireline, Cool Archie showcased versatility during his unbeaten streak, winning from 1000 metres to 1600 metres on varying surfaces before his career-ending setback.

McDonald free to ride on Silver Slipper day

Champion rider James McDonald will be available to ride at Saturday week's Silver Slipper meeting at Rosehill after having his whip infringement suspension reduced following an appeal. Racing NSW stewards had suspended McDonald for ten days and fined him $20,000 for excessive use of the whip aboard the Chris Waller-trained winner Fireball (Snitzel) in the $2 million Inglis Millennium (RL, 1100m) at Randwick last Saturday, however, after a lodged appeal by McDonald the suspension has been reduced from ten days to six, and his fine doubled to $40,000. The ruling means McDonald will now be free to ride at the important Silver Slipper (Gr 2, 1100m) and Hobartville Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m) program at Rosehill on February 21 and won't miss a Saturday metropolitan meeting.

Symons and Laxon launch Macedon Racing

One of Australian racing’s most celebrated training properties has entered a new era with the launch of Macedon Racing, a new venture to be led by dual Melbourne Cup-winning trainers John Symons and Sheila Laxon. The pair returned to Macedon Lodge in late 2025, completing a full-circle moment at the property where their training partnership began and where they established a reputation for developing high-class stayers, including Melbourne Cup winners. Macedon Racing is expected to have a strong presence at the upcoming Queensland Winter Carnival.

King hoping Mid Ocean can rule at Matamata

Benji King is hoping Mid Ocean (Ocean Park) can provide him with his first stakes win when the dual winner steps back up in grade for Saturday’s Lisa Chittick Champagne Stakes (Listed, 1400m) at Matamata. “She’s definitely got ability and we believe she deserves her chance in a race like this, but as a two-win horse she has a number of more proven horses to beat, and that wide draw [13] won’t help,” the trainer said. “On the positive side, Mid Ocean showed what she’s capable of when she beat a strong progressive field on Boxing Day and nothing went her way when she finished third at Ellerslie last month. She’s not the sort of horse to star on the training track, but her Tuesday gallop was probably the best I’ve seen her work and the feedback from Sam [Collett] confirmed that. We’ll need a race with plenty of speed so that she can hopefully slot in somewhere, but I wouldn’t be too surprised if she was to get amongst it, provided she gets the right run.”

Ultimate Habit flying ahead of Oaks

Ultimate Habit (Embellish) took an important step toward her tilt at the New Zealand Oaks (Gr 1, 2400m) at Ellerslie on Saturday week with a strong trial win at Te Aroha on Wednesday. The Robbie Patterson-trained filly was a stunning last-start winner of the Lowland Stakes (Gr 2, 2100m) and is rated a $9 chance in the Oaks in a market headed by $1.90 favourite Ohope Wins (Ocean Park). Ultimate Habit oozed quality when coming from last in an 1100-metre heat on Wednesday to win under her own steam in a trial against quality older horses. “I wanted to go to the Ellerslie trials on Tuesday but we couldn't get a suitable trial there so I have had to come here to Te Aroha,” Patterson said. “She finished off nicely against some good horses, and she's only three with a lot ahead of her in the future.”
Patterson said Ultimate Habit had made good progress since her Lowland victory, which came at just start number four. “She's progressed very well. She is a beautiful filly and easy to work with,” he said. “She came home in 32.7 [for the last 600 metres] the other day over 2100 metres. They just don't do that, so she's something special and if we can get her to relax over the 2400 metres at Ellerslie, she's going to give Ohope Wins a run for her money, I hope.”

Asia

KSA: Engelbrecht-Bresges issues warning over 'exponential' black market growth

Winfried Engelbrecht-Bresges (Credit: JCSA)

Black market betting is “rampant” on an international scale and domestic gambling regulators need to think globally to tackle it, the Asian Racing Conference (ARC) was warned on Tuesday.

Hong Kong Jockey Club chief executive Winfried Engelbrecht-Bresges, speaking during the 41st edition of the conference in Riyadh, urged racing authorities to hammer home to their governments that focusing on tackling illegal betting in their own countries alone would fail to yield a noticeable downturn.

He said: “Illegal wagering is rampant; its growth is exponential. Illegal bookmakers offer better prices, they give credit and crypto, which makes tracking money laundering difficult.

“The regulators are looking at this nationally but they need to see the international component. So it is a case of coming together to change views.”

This month a new illegal betting taskforce was launched in the UK in an attempt to stem the growing black market. But Engelbrecht-Bresges cited affordability checks brought in as part of the gambling white paper in 2023 as a prime example of policies that have boosted the appeal of the unregulated market.

“In the UK, affordability checks have created a massive incentive to go offshore,” he said. “So now we are making an effort to make these authorities see what we see.

“We have a huge challenge from the illegal market. Regulators have to approach the challenge globally and not just locally, otherwise it will not make a difference.”

The ARC, which runs until Thursday, is seeking to not only tackle illegal betting but address the issues of falling foal crops and finding ways to engage new fans.

Engelbrecht-Bresges said it was “a concern as an industry that we are not growing” in terms of the number of horses produced and that this was happening at the same time as an expanding stakes programme, meaning the “top horses can avoid each other” too easily.

Younger generations were seeking “instant gratification”, Engelbrecht-Bresges added, and horseracing betting was falling behind emerging trends.

“If you promote only wagering, especially to a younger generation, you have no chance," he said. "Because they have gaming – instant gratification, so we have to first really promote our sport.”

ANZ News

Snitzel over Charge Forward, and a close-up doubling of Redoute’s Choice are to the fore in the sparkling and strongly Australian-flavoured pedigree of Inglis Millennium (RL, 1100m) winner Fireball.

Chris Waller’s colt became the late Snitzel’s (Redoute's Choice) 167th individual stakes winner, and his 64th juvenile black type victor, with a powerful display to win Saturday's $2 million feature under James McDonald, staying unbeaten at his second start and rising to the fourth line of betting for the Golden Slipper (Gr 1,1200m).

He also bolstered Snitzel’s chances of pushing for his fifth Australian general sires’ title, despite his death last June aged 22. He’s now more than $2 million clear at the top of the table, with two Arrowfield star sons of Redoute’s Choice (Danehill) filling the top two, The Autumn Sun ranking second.

Snitzel is also well clear on the score of stakes winners with nine for the season, two ahead of a three-way tie for second between I Am Invincible (Invincible Spirit), Street Boss (Street Cry) and Written Tycoon (Iglesia). Snitzel’s nine include elite-level victors Baraqiel and Transatlantic.

And the late superstar remarkably occupies top five spots on both the two-year-old (second) and broodmare (fifth) sire tables, as well as the three-year-old standings (fourth).

Occasionally, you have to stop and smell the stats and take stock of what a historically significant sire he was, and continues to be.

And in Fireball - bought by James Harron and Tony Fung’s colts syndicate for $460,000 at Inglis Easter - we see not only some classic Snitzel breeding, but a few paths well proven in colonial breeding.

Bred by Michael O’Keeffe, the colt descends from one of the better families of the late breeding legend Geoff White, who was responsible for his third dam Countess Christie (Marscay), a triple stakes-winner who threw another black type victor.

Countess Christie’s dam was White’s American mare Brilliantdeduction (Capote), who won a US Listed and was a half-sister to two more black type victors including the 16-time winner Thumbsucker (Great Sun).

And Brilliantdeduction’s dam - Fireball's fifth - brings huge class. My Dear Plum (Royal Intent), foaled in 1969, was the dam of three stakes winners and four stakes-placed horses from just 11 foals.

Fireball is the second foal and only runner out of the Charge Forward (Red Ransom) mare Advance Party. Bred by Cressfield Thoroughbreds and associates, she was bought by O’Keeffe for $75,000 at Inglis Classic and trained by Bryce Heys.

Incidentally, O’Keeffe and Heys were very active again at the Classic sale this week, buying four lots together under the Ellerslie Lodge banner including the sale’s fifth and sixth most expensive yearlings - an Arrowfield colt by Castelvecchio (Dundeeel) for $390,000, and a Home Affairs (I Am Invincible) filly offered by Mullaglass Stud, for $380,000.

Advance Party was nothing too special as a racehorse, winning two at the NSW provincials from 19 starts for O’Keeffe and Heys.

But it was the bloodlines behind her O’Keeffe was particularly keen on.

In putting her to Snitzel, he’s tapped into a particularly rich cross.

Charge Forward ranks in the top five among Snitzel’s many nicks, with an 18 per cent stakes winners to runners ratio, at four from 22.

The quartet includes one of Snitzel’s three Golden Slipper winners in Estijaab, as well as outstanding but troubled speedster Remarque.

Putting Snitzel over Charge Forward effects a reinforcement in that it repeats a successful American family.

Charge Forward’s second dam is Dream Appeal (Valid Appeal), a mare Arrowfield’s bloodstock manager Jon Freyer bought in Kentucky in the 1980s. Her sire’s second dam is the stakes-producing Scotch Verdict (Alsab), who also comes in strong to Snitzel, as his fifth dam.

“That cross of Snitzel’s line back to Charge Forward’s grandmother is at play in Fireball,” Freyer tells It’s In The Blood. “It’s a nice knit with any of those Charge Forward mares with Snitzel for that reason.”

Fireball also bears a decidedly close 2m x 3f of Redoute’s Choice, thanks to Snitzel up top and Advance Party’s unraced dam Luanne.

“Inbreeding to Redoute’s Choice works well here,” Freyer says.

“Not many people try Redoute’s at two-by-three, but it certainly hasn’t been a negative. It’s been a positive cross with Zoustar as well. When Zoustar is crossed back to mares with Redoute’s Choice it’s worked really well.”

Doubling Redoute’s Choice in pedigrees has now produced 21 stakes winners by ten different stallions, including reigning champion sire Zoustar (Northern Meteor) and Snitzel sons Russian Revolution and Shamus Award.

Zoustar has Redoute’s Choice as his damsire. One example of the cross with him is his dual Group 2-winning mare Haut Brion Her, who’s out of a Redoute’s mare for a 3f x 2f of that great stallion. Zoustar over Redoute’s Choice has borne 11 winners from 12 runners, though Haut Brion Her is its only stakes winner.

Some more great Australian names are littered through Fireball’s pedigree.

He’s inbred to Bletchingly (Biscay) at 5m x 4f, 6m. The first and last come through Redoute’s Choice’s damsire Canny Lad, the middle peg through Charge Forward’s dam, Sydney’s Dream.

Biscay is thus repeated four times, through Bletchingly’s three spots and Marscay’s one, at 6m x 5m, 7m, 5m.

Elsewhere, repeats of Redoute’s help enrich the Lunchtime spread, with that imported British son of Silly Season at 6f, 4m x 7f, via Canny Lad and as the grandsire of Snitzel’s dam Snippets’ Lass (Snippets).

Canada’s superstar Northern Dancer (Nearctic) adds zest with six appearances at 5m, 6m, 6m, 5m x 6m, 7m. Redoute’s Choice is inbred to him, and so is Snippets’ Lass.

Usefully, Northern Dancer is present through four different sons - Danzig and Nijinsky in Redoute’s, and Grand Chaudiere and Storm Bird in Snippets’ Lass.

Northern Dancer’s presence ensures a strong smattering of his wonder dam Natalama (Native Dancer), seven times through the sixth and seventh removes and once in the eighth.

Another great broodmare, 1919 throw Selene (Chaucer) is the most apparent female in the first nine generations, with nine mentions, eight of them in the ninth column. Selene threw six stakes winners including the ultra influential sire Hyperion (Gainsborough) and Pharamond (Phalaris).

Hyperion is the equal top sire in the pedigree with 15 spots - along with Nearco (Pharos), while Pharamond is there six times.
