Celebrated two-year-old trainers Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott have a three-horse squadron taking their next steps towards the Golden Slipper (Gr 1, 1200m) in another Randwick two-year-old event dominated by fillies on Saturday.

The Pierro Plate (1100m) somehow in this day and age manages to not have black type status but is invariably a strong guide to Sydney’s juvenile scene.

What's On

This year’s edition is no exception and - as with the race a week earlier named after Pierro’s sire, the Lonhro Plate (Listed, 1000m) - the females by far dominate the males numbers-wise.

The Lonhro Plate drew four males and six fillies, with two of the latter filling the quinella.

Males are further into the minority in Saturday’s Pierro, with only three of them taking on nine fillies. It’s a situation mirrored in the Waterhouse-Bott stable, whose leading fillies include Gimcrack Stakes (Gr 3, 1000m) victor Shiki (Too Darn Hot) and the winner of that Lonhro Plate, Agrarian Girl (Tassort).

“We’ve probably got more depth to the fillies than we do with the colts, in terms of the horses who are on a potential Slipper campaign,” Bott told ANZ News. “Sometimes that’s just the way it falls.”

Tulloch Lodge has a strong chance of further juvenile success with their three fillies in the Pierro.

They’ll saddle third-starter Miss Chanel (Tagaloa), who’s rated a $3 favourite to give her Yulong sire his second winner from his latest racing crop, along with second starters Caloocan Beauty (Justify) at $13 and Better By Far (Farnan) at $14.

Bookmakers have another filly as $4.60 second-elect in Chris Waller’s Godolphin runner Sequinned (Pinatubo), who had no luck in a debut seventh and is seeking to become her sire’s first Australian winner amongst nine runners.

The royal blue will also be carried by Michael Freedman’s Outspan (Bivouac), the $5.50 shot carrying the top impost under the set weights and penalties scale as he seeks to continue his father’s strong run of results following a second-start Rosehill win.

Miss Chanel, a $270,000 Magic Millions Gold Coast buy from breeders Yulong for Waterhouse-Bott, and who’s the third foal of the stakes-placed Talented (Snitzel), debuted with a third in the race won by Outspan at Rosehill on January 17 after travelling on the pace.

She then enjoyed the one-one trail before just failing to catch leader Chilly Girl (Trapeze Artist) by 0.32 lengths in the fillies’ Widden Stakes (Gr 3, 1100m), with the third horse 2.42 lengths further back.

“That was a really good effort,” Bott said. “She got a lovely run in transit, and things went her way no doubt, but she and the other one still skipped away from the rest, so it was a strong performance from both horses.

“Our girl maybe bumped into a better one on the day, but she showed nice improvement off her debut performance, and she seems to have improved again off the run.

She’s thriving in her work at present, she’s still well placed under the conditions, and this looks to be a nice stepping stone for her

“She’s thriving in her work at present, she’s still well placed under the conditions, and this looks to be a nice stepping stone for her.”

The Yulong-bred Miss Chanel will have an obstacle to overcome, having drawn gate nine for Regan Bayliss.

“It’s a bit of a sticky gate, but she’s got a good amount of tactical speed, and we’ve also seen her be versatile in her racing pattern to date, so she’s got a few options that she can use to get herself out of trouble if needs be,” Bott said.

“Of our three, she’s coming through the strongest formlines, most certainly.”

Blue Diamond Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) winner Tagaloa (Lord Kanaloa), who covered 46 mares at $22,000 (inc GST) at Yulong last spring according to latest studbook figures, made a fair start last season with five winners from 25 runners including one stakes victor in Spicy Lu, and finished ninth on the Australian first season sires' table.

He now has two stakes winners among nine stakes horses, from 68 runners.

“We’ve got a couple by the stallion,” Bott said. “She’s one we picked out of the Magic Millions, out of a Snitzel mare who was well performed early.

“Physically, this filly looked like she’d always be a mature type of filly, so it’s no surprise to see her up and going at this early stage. She had strength, maturity and athleticism to go with it, so we could see her being a precocious sort of horse.”

Caloocan Beauty is a rare specimen. A daughter of Justify (Scat Daddy) - sire of Waterhouse-Bott’s former star juvenile Storm Boy - she was bred and foaled in the US and imported to Australia aged 11 months. She was then bought for $475,000 by Waterhouse-Bott and associates at Inglis Easter from Sledmere Stud’s draft.

Perhaps more anticipated as a three-year-old, she’s the third foal of Sahara Breeze (More Than Ready), who won a 1300-metre maiden in Canada and is a half-sister to Gayego (Gilded Time), a five-time stakes winner including at the elite-level in Oak Tree’s Ancient Title Stakes (Gr 1, 6f).

After her first barrier trial in December, Caloocan Beauty debuted with a fourth in a Randwick two-year-old handicap over 1000 metres on January 24, racing off the rump of the leader before fading in the straight to finish fourth, beaten 5.66 lengths. Tim Clark retains the ride, from barrier two.

“She ran an honest race first time out and will have the benefit of that experience,” Bott said.

“She was sort of dictated to at her first start. Hopefully with that experience now she can be that little bit sharper and put herself in a better position where she might be able to dictate things.

“She’s had some good time between races now and has had plenty of time to show us improvement at home. She looks to have done well, and the inside gate will help of course.

“She’s probably that one preparation less than maybe the other fillies have had, but she’s a nice style of filly.

“She’s got a good bit of physical improvement to come. She's going to be better still next campaign but she’s showing us enough at this early point.”

The well-named Better By Far - by Farnan (Not A Single Doubt) out of Brisbane Listed winner Better Reflection (Better Than Ready) - was a $180,000 buy for Waterhouse-Bott and Kestrel Thoroughbreds at Magic Millions Gold Coast.

After a 2.68-length Randwick trial win she debuted as a $1.85 favourite in a 900-metre Scone two-year-old handicap, but after travelling four-wide was nosed out on the bob of the head by Rodney Northam’s gelding Savage Look (Wild Ruler), who subsequently ran third as the first male home in the Lonhro.

“Scone was a good effort,” Bott said of the daughter of Farnan, who’s running a narrow second on the Australian second season sires’ table, to Ghaiyyath (Dubawi).

“She was caught wide but stuck on well, and there was plenty of merit to her performance. She’s up in grade but she’s an improver, and the form out of that race has stood up already.

“She looks a natural two-year-old, so there’s plenty of positives to make for her as well. She’s a neater style of filly, but very forward and looks like she’ll appreciate this early racing.”

Though Shiki has two wins from four starts and Agrarian Girl is currently Tulloch Lodge’s shortest-priced Golden Slipper contender, at $26, Bott said there was no clear shortlist of the stable’s top seeds for that feature as yet.

“It’s a bit early. They’ve all kicked off their campaign and they’ve all put in a positive performance that’s indicated they deserve their chance,” he said.

“They’ve all gone their different paths to get the best chance to qualify. Over the next two or three weeks, we’ll see whichever one of those is really going to go ahead and put their hand up. That could be any which one.”

Champion Miss Finland euthanised after respiratory complications

Miss Finland (Credit: Sportpix)

Arrowfield Stud’s revered matriarch Miss Finland (Redoute’s Choice) was humanely euthanised on Friday aged 22 after suffering complications from a chronic respiratory disease.

Owner John Messara confirmed veterinarians made the decision on Friday morning when the champion mare’s condition deteriorated.

"We gave her the best of veterinary care but she wasn't responding as well as we hoped,'' Messara said.

"Then she started to have some breathing difficulties and I told the vets to do what they could but not to let her suffer. She has been so good to us and I couldn't bear to think she was suffering. This is a very sad day for everyone at Arrowfield because she has been such a special mare.''

Messara rated Miss Finland the best horse he has owned, reflecting on her extraordinary 2006 season which included victories in both the Golden Slipper (Gr 1, 1200m) and VRC Oaks (Gr 1, 2500m).

"A lot of people have been asking me to compare Autumn Glow with Miss Finland but I have to say, right now, Miss Finland has the superior race record,'' Messara said.

"In time, Autumn Glow may very well prove to be the better horse but she has a bit to do to catch up with Miss Finland. I keep thinking about what she achieved in 2006 when she won the Golden Slipper over 1200 metres then later that year won the VRC Oaks at 2500 metres, which is a remarkable achievement.

"She was a champion racehorse and passed on those qualities at stud where she was a very good broodmare, producing a Group 1 winner, Stay With Me, who emulated her dam by winning the Thousand Guineas [in 2012].''

By Redoute’s Choice (Danehill) and trained by David Hayes, Miss Finland won 11 of her 26 starts, including ten stakes races, and earned more than $4.3 million in prize-money.

The only horse to complete the Golden Slipper-VRC Oaks double, she later added the Australian Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) and Arrowfield Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m) at Group 1 level and was crowned Australia’s Champion Two-Year-Old in 2006 and Champion Three-Year-Old in 2007.

At stud she produced 12 foals, highlighted by Thousand Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) winner Stay With Me (Street Cry), with her final foal the unraced three-year-old Martha’s Choice (Dundeel) before being retired from breeding three years ago.

My Gladiola chasing Group 1 breakthrough

My Gladiola (Credit: Sportpix)

Trainer John McArdle is hoping the stars align for My Gladiola (I Am Invincible) when she resumes in Saturday’s Black Caviar Lightning Stakes (Gr 1, 1000m) at Flemington. A debut winner of the Blue Diamond Preview (F) (Gr 3, 1000m) at Sandown last January, My Gladiola has long been held in high regard by her trainer, but Group 1 ambitions were previously thwarted by awkward barriers in the Blue Diamond (Gr 1, 1200m) and Coolmore Stud Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m). Drawn widest in a field of eight on Saturday, McArdle believes the setup suits the straight-track specialist as he searches for a first elite-level victory in over two decades. "The outside draw suits," McArdle said. "In the Coolmore she was drawn down on the inside and had to follow Tentyris, this time she should be in clean air all the way and he will need to chase her down." My Gladiola has raced down Flemington’s straight three times for a Listed win and two placings, and McArdle said the decision was influenced by her affinity for the straight course and regular rider Jamie Mott being able to ride her at 54 kilograms. "Jamie galloped her on Tuesday and was happy," McArdle said. "We put a mate out in front of her to give her something to chase and all the data was good. She's probably a touch above her racing weight, but I think that's because she's matured and strengthened a bit more. She's a powerful girl, but we can't be unhappy with the way she's got to the races, so we'll see if she's good enough and if she is and runs well, then we'll head to the Newmarket [Handicap]. Jamie's happy with her and he's getting down to 54 kilos to ride her. That gives us some confidence."

Freedman opts for small steps with Manaal

Group 1 winner Manaal (Tassort) could be embarking on her final preparation when she resumes in Saturday’s Triscay Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) at Randwick, with trainer Michael Freedman keen to keep the four-year-old in her comfort zone. Freedman opted for the mares’ assignment despite her 59.5-kilogram impost, favouring it over the Expressway Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m). “She’s a multiple stakes winner, a Group 1 winner, it’s really running her in races where she’s best suited and ideally where she doesn’t carry a penalty,’’ Freedman told Racing NSW. “We’ll pick our way around them and if she’s really going well we can have a look at those good mares races in Brisbane. There’s a chance she may go to stud after this campaign.” Bred and raced by Emirates Park, Manaal claimed the 2024 Inglis Sires’ (Gr 1, 1400m) and added the Sheraco Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) and Golden Pendant (Gr 2, 1400m) last spring after an excusable first-up defeat. “She’s a very no fuss sort,” Freedman said. “I’m happy with how she’s trialled and she seems in good order.” Stablemate Just Feelin’ Lucky (Justify) is also a likely Triscay runner after impressing in a recent trial. Meanwhile, all eyes will be on Freedman’s star filly Apocalyptic (Extreme Choice) in the Light Fingers Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) as the Group 1 winner resumes ahead of a potential clash with Tempted (Street Boss) over 1400 metres next start. “She’s had a couple of nice trials… she seems in good order for first-up,” Freedman said. “Hopefully she can run well and get her ready for the 1400 metres in two weeks.”

Pride’s confident with Weeping Woman

Trainer Joe Pride is taking added confidence into Saturday’s Triscay Stakes after star jockey Nash Rawiller labelled emerging mare Weeping Woman (Lonhro) a potential future Group 1 performer. Rawiller, who has partnered many of Pride’s top horses, won’t ride Weeping Woman due to her light weight [54.5kg], but his post-trial assessment has stuck with the trainer ahead of her return from a Razor Sharp Handicap (Listed, 1200m) victory in December. "Nash got off her the other day after her trial and he said, 'I wouldn't be surprised if she graduates to being a Group 1 horse'," Pride said. "I was a bit taken aback because I didn't have her as that, but I have found over the years that Nash is a bloody good judge." Stablemate Coal Crusher (Turffontein) also resumes in Saturday’s Expressway Stakes, with Pride expecting the veteran to be competitive despite a high-class line-up that includes elite-level mares. "This is a ripper of a version," Pride said. "He's going to be a big price because everybody doesn't think he's got the class of the others, but I have kept him up to the mark. He had a good hit-out in a trial the other day and went really well. I think he'll run a cheeky race, and he'll get out and scoot." Coal Crusher, to be ridden by Chad Schofield, is rated a $15 chance in the six-horse field, while Tim Clark takes the reins on Weeping Woman, a $4.40 favourite for the Triscay Stakes.

Ole Dancer switched to Desirable Stakes

Group 1 winner Ole Dancer (Ole Kirk) will take on her own age group at Flemington on Saturday after a change of plans from the Peter Moody and Katherine Coleman stable. Initially slated to contest the Frances Tressady Stakes (Gr 3, 1400m), Ole Dancer will instead line up in the Desirable Stakes (Listed, 1400m) after stablemate Sheza Alibi (Saxon Warrior) failed to impress in a key gallop earlier this week, prompting the stable to swap their targets. Moody said the Desirable Stakes represented the softer option as the Thousand Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) winner builds toward the Surround Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) at Randwick on February 28. "She's not screwed down as we're mindful of not wanting her to have a gut-buster 14 days before the Surround, and we want to be going around two or three runs after that," Moody said. "Class will take her a long way, unless one of the other fillies really jumps out of the ground, so I’d suggest it would be hard to see her getting beat." The Surround Stakes has been Ole Dancer’s main aim since her Thousand Guineas triumph last spring, with Moody noting her two defeats came from awkward barriers. "We've probably got to ride her cold on Saturday, seven of seven, and the filly of Danny O'Brien's [Sass Appeal] probably controls the tempo and is probably the one to beat. It's not going to be easy, but it will be a nice gallop for her, the track looks enormous and the rain we had on Wednesday is the best thing that has happened to every track in Victoria. All being well, this will lead us to the Surround in a couple of weeks."

Stronger Aeliana returns for Apollo Stakes tilt

Aeliana (Credit: Sportpix)

Chris Waller expects an improved Aeliana (Castelvecchio) to make her presence felt when she resumes in Saturday’s Apollo Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m) at Randwick. Despite a spring campaign that included chasing home Via Sistina (Fastnet Rock) and Mr Brightside (Bullbars), Waller said the mare never fully satisfied him as a physical. "She ate well through the spring, her bloods were good, but she never looked well," Waller said. "She looked light." Believing she was still developing, Waller allowed Aeliana time in the paddock and has been encouraged by her return, with the mare coming back around 15 kilograms heavier. "I'm much happier. She's perfect," he said. "She’ll be very hard to beat on Saturday, as we saw first-up in the Winx [Stakes] last spring. She almost beat Via Sistina. As long as we didn't overtax her. That's my only fear, but there was no sign of it. We pulled up after the Cox Plate, and she was a bit unlucky there [when sixth]." Aeliana forms part of a six-strong Waller team in the Apollo Stakes alongside Autumn Glow (The Autumn Sun) and Lindermann (Lonhro), who shape as the stable’s leading hopes, while Wootton Verni (Wootton Bassett), Soul Of Spain (Phoenix Of Spain) and River Of Stars (Sea The Stars) are expected to improve with the run. "He's pretty forward because first and second-up is his chance to beat the better ones," Waller said of Lindermann. "You've got Nash on, there's always a Nash factor. He can always pull something out of his hat."

Kluske opts for tougher test with Gold Spirit

Grant Kluske will test Gold Spirit (Turffontein) in stronger company at Morphettville on Saturday, opting for the card’s $55,000 Benchmark 72 Handicap (1000m) despite the gelding being eligible for an easier assignment later on the program. The four-year-old will carry just 54 kilograms following Brooke King’s 3-kilo claim and jumps from the second-widest gate in a field of ten. Kluske said the make-up of the race influenced his decision to step up in grade. "I decided to go with the higher-class race mainly because of the horses in it," Kluske said. "He likes it up forward, but I think it's going to be a bit of a fight up front and will take a sit. He doesn't have to be up there, so I'm more than happy going into it." With no runner rated 69 or higher among the acceptances, Kluske believes the contest presents a suitable opportunity to gauge the gelding’s progress for the remainder of the preparation. "This will only be his second start this time in, but he's got to step up the mark in this one," Kluske said. "It's a Benchmark 72, but there's nothing in it rated 69, so we're more than happy. He's a very good horse, very professional in everything he does and I'm feeling really happy with him."

Dunn fined $10,000

Trainer Matthew Dunn was fined $10,000 on Thursday after Racing NSW stewards conducted an inquiry following the detection of trenbolone, trendione and epitrenbolone in a urine sample taken from Celebrity Torque (Spirit Of Boom). The sample was collected following the mare’s performance in the Class 1 Handicap (1210m) at Lismore on Friday, September 26. The inquiry has been adjourned pending further submissions.

Gold Coast meeting abandoned

Racing Queensland has advised that Saturday’s Gold Coast Turf Club meeting on the course proper has been abandoned. The decision follows a track inspection after 75mm of rain fell from 6pm on Thursday evening, with officials determining the surface would not recover in time for racing on Saturday. The previously scheduled Polytrack meeting will now proceed in place of the turf fixture.

De Armas sold to OTI, bound for Waller stable

Stakes-winning juvenile De Armas (Ardrossan) will continue her career in Australia after being sold to OTI Racing, with the promising filly set to join Chris Waller’s Sydney stable. Trained by Johno Benner in New Zealand, she won two of her three starts, including the Counties Challenge Stakes (Listed, 1100m), and was last seen finishing a luckless fourth in the Karaka Millions 2YO (RL, 1200m). A near five-length debut winner, she was secured by Benner for $16,000 from the 2025 New Zealand Bloodstock National Online Yearling Sale. “OTI have been interested in her the whole way through, but post Karaka Millions, we decided to sell her early, simple as that,” Benner said. “She goes to Chris Waller and will head to Australia on Sunday. They've got to train on as three-year-olds, but she's definitely very good and a lovely filly to have around, but money talks. She's got a great brain and hopefully she acquits herself really well.” Bloodstock agent Phill Cataldo, who secured the filly on behalf of OTI, said her performances and scope pointed to a bright future. “Every time she has been out she’s shown brilliance,” Cataldo said. “She had three trials, one before she raced and the other two between runs and blitzed them on all three occasions. She spaced them on debut, then two months later won easily at Listed level going right handed for the first time. The rub of the green went against her in the Karaka Millions, but she was still good enough to run the fastest closing 400 metre and 200 metre sectionals, which was a top performance under the circumstances. She’s been magnificently prepared by Johno Benner and now goes to Chris, from one top trainer to another. I'm sure she will represent OTI and the NZ suffix with distinction.”

Unbeaten Lara Antipova heads Te Akau’s Matamata two-year-old charge

Unbeaten filly Lara Antipova (Russian Revolution) will headline Te Akau’s home-track assault at Matamata on Saturday, stepping up to the Matamata Breeders’ Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) after two dominant wins to begin her career. Prepared by Mark Walker and Sam Bergerson, the juvenile has impressed with an eight-length debut victory at Te Aroha, followed by a commanding performance in the Wakefield Challenge Stakes (Gr 2, 1100m), and now faces her toughest test. “She’s in great form and has freshened up well since Wellington,” Bergerson said. “She had an exhibition gallop last week at Tauranga and worked well on the course proper at Matamata this week. The forecast is a query, and there’s some talented fillies there, but she’s been faultless so far.” A positive showing is expected to set up a tilt at next month’s Sistema Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m). Te Akau will also be represented in the Matamata Slipper (Gr 3, 1200m) by Karaka Millions 2YO runners Kinnaird (Home Affairs) and Out Of The Blue (Tivaci), with the stable hopeful of improvement from both. “Kinnaird was disappointing, a few things didn’t go his way and he threw his toys out of the cot,” Bergerson said. “It’s a smaller field and although he’s won at Ellerslie, he might be a bit better going this way around. We can’t fault him and his work has been good this week. Out Of The Blue was really good in the Millions, he ran the fastest last 800 and 600 metres after he blew the start from a bad gate. In a smaller field on his home track, we certainly don’t think he’s out of it.”

Te Akau with strong stakes hand

Belle Cheval (Credit: Race Images)

Te Akau Racing will also mount a strong challenge across the remaining Matamata features on Saturday, headed by Belle Cheval (Savabeel) in the Lisa Chittick Champagne Stakes (Listed, 1400m). The progressive filly, a New Zealand 1,000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) placegetter and last-start Almanzor Trophy (Gr 3, 1200m) winner, is being set on a path toward The NZB Kiwi (Listed, 1500m). “She’s the up and comer and we always had this race pencilled in as a nice stepping stone to The NZB Kiwi,” Bergerson said. “She’s really talented and keeps improving so it will be exciting, with the forecast the only query.” Stablemates Captured By Love (Written Tycoon) and My Lips Are Sealed (Ace High) will join her in the Champagne Stakes, with the stable looking for improvement from both runners. “Captured By Love has been freshened since Te Rapa where she got a long way back and was never really in it,” Bergerson said. “She’s had a couple of exhibition gallops and we can’t fault her at home while My Lips Are Sealed had a disappointing spring. She ran a really good race [third] in this last year behind Legarto and typically finds form this time of the year, so we’re hoping she can bounce back and rediscover her zest.” In the staying ranks, What You Wish For (Embellish) will attempt to defend his crown in the Kaimai Stakes (Listed, 2000m), with Bergerson pleased with the five-year-old’s current condition. “He’s in really good form and Wolfgang puts him in at a suitable weight and he’s absolutely bouncing around the place,” Bergerson said. “He’s looking to win it again and we can’t see any reason why he can’t.”

Shailer shooting for local stakes glory

Kris Shailer won the Matamata Slipper four years ago with Alabama Gold (Turn Me Loose) when training in partnership with Stephen Autridge, and this year he’s hoping to win it solo with Justin Case (Banquo). Shailer now heads Waikato Stud’s Courtza Park operation, where he trains a small race team for the farm on top of his primary commitments of breaking in and pre-training. He has a near faultless record in that role, recording three wins and a runner-up result from just four starts this term, and Justin Case is responsible for one of those victories after finishing runner-up on debut. He will get his first tilt at stakes level this weekend. “He has come through that last run well and his work on Tuesday morning was great, he just worked on his own but was running times the rest of them were running on the course proper,” Shailer said. “I am really happy with him. I won this race in partnership with Stephen Autridge a few years back with Alabama Gold, it will be great to have a runner in my own name and in the Waikato Stud colours.” All going to plan after Saturday, Justin Case will likely test his talent in a couple of looming elite-level events. “There is the Sistema [Stakes] in a couple of weeks and he is nominated for the Manawatu Sires’,” Shailer said. “But we will just get through Saturday and make a plan after that.”

Imprevu seeking to shed bridesmaid tag

Imprevu (Credit: Race Images)

Cambridge mare Imprevu (Wrote) will be seeking to shed her bridesmaid tag when she heads to Matamata on Saturday to contest the Lisa Chittick Champagne Stakes. For the second successive year, the daughter of Wrote (High Chaparral) finished runner-up on Karaka Millions night, finishing behind Moschino (Ten Sovereigns) in the Jo Giles Stakes (1400m) after being runner-up to Konasana (Dundeel) in last year’s Westbury Classic (Gr 2, 1400m). They join her growing list of placings, including the Rotorua Stakes (Gr 3, 1400m) and Legacy Lodge Sprint (Listed, 1200m), and trainer Janenne Dalley is keen to buck that trend this weekend. “Everything is going to plan, so I just hope the rain isn’t going to be too much,” Dalley said. While concerned about the forecast rain, Dalley said it could aid their chances from their wide gate of 11 in the 13-horse field. “She’ll be out of trouble there and won’t be locked up on the fence,” she said. “At that time of day [race six], if we do get a bit of rain, I don’t think it’s going to hurt her.” Following Saturday, Imprevu is set to head to Ellerslie on Champions Day, where she will be seeking redemption in the Dubai Classic (Gr 2, 1400m), formerly known as the Westbury Classic. On that card last year, the seven-year-old mare was unplaced in the New Zealand Thoroughbred Breeders’ Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m), and Dalley hasn’t ruled out heading south to tackle the mile feature at its new home of Trentham next month. “We’ve tried her over a mile three times and she hasn’t really liked it,” she said. “It may be on the cards, but we will just get through tomorrow and Champions Day.”

Noble Knight on Southland crusade

Noble Knight (Ghibellines) has ventured to Southland just once before, winning last year’s Invercargill Gold Cup (2600m), and he will be out to keep his 100 per cent strike rate intact in the region when he heads to Ascot Park on Saturday to defend his crown in the 2600-metre event. The gelding heads into the race in good form, having won the Marlborough Cup (2000m) at Riccarton last month after finishing runner-up in the Waikouaiti Cup (2200m) at Wingatui a week prior. “It was a good win last start and his work has been good, so I’m pretty happy with him,” trainer and part-owner Sandy Cunningham said. The eight-year-old son of Ghibellines (Shamardal) has been lumbered with topweight of 60 kilograms, but will get some weight relief courtesy of apprentice jockey Floor Moerman’s three-kilogram claim, and he will jump from barrier three. “He’s drawn well and being top weight, it is nice being able to claim a little bit too with Floor,” Cunningham said. “She gets on with the horse, so that is really good.” Bred by White Robe Lodge’s Wayne and Karen Stewart, Noble Knight will reunite with the Otago couple on his way south as Cunningham makes a pitstop at the renowned thoroughbred nursery on her way to Invercargill. “I’m very spoilt because I get to stop and camp at White Robe Lodge overnight, so I will stop there and take them down the next day,” Cunningham said. “The trip down there is long enough, so it breaks the trip up.”

RSA: Engelbrecht-Bresges praises strong, stimulating discussions at ARC

Winfried Engelbrecht-Bresges (Credit: HKJC)

The 41st Asian Racing Conference (ARC) closed in Riyadh on Thursday, with Asian Racing Federation (ARF) chair and Hong Kong Jockey Club (HKJC) CEO Winfried Engelbrecht-Bresges hailing the conference as an enduring success which highlighted the sport’s greatest opportunities and also its challenges.

Praising the work of the conference host, the Jockey Club of Saudi Arabia and His Royal Highness Prince Bandar bin Khalid Al Faisal, and the ARC organising committee, Engelbrecht-Bresges said the ARC’s discussions reiterated the importance of increased collaboration and new technology as key motivators in safeguarding the sport’s future.

“If there is one message that cuts across all our discussions, it is this: the future of horse racing is under threat and can only be secured by working together to address the key challenges we face,” Engelbrecht-Bresges said at the ceremony crowned by the official exchange of the ARC flag to New Zealand Thoroughbred Racing, host of the 42nd ARC in New Zealand in 2028.

“I firmly believe we now have a mandate for change. We must act now. We must think and cooperate globally and implement nationally.

“At the outset, I highlighted that we are in a critical phase for racing and breeding, and yet fragmentation within our sport is preventing us from tackling the challenges that confront us. I called for global collaboration and the need to make fundamental changes to the way we position, promote and operate our sport.

“Coming back to the Conference itself, we have heard from global experts and leaders, and shared best practices and case studies from around the world, which we hope have been informative.

“We must create heroes, create global competitions where the best meet the best, and create platforms with holistic storytelling to increase our fan base and promote our sport globally. We must use technology to create new digital onsite and online experiences. We must be more agile and embrace global initiatives like the World Pool to better compete against sports betting, iGaming and other entertainment offerings.

“We must continue our investment in science and technology to minimise the risk of catastrophic breakdowns and sudden death. The ARF secretariat will develop an action plan of key activities for the short and medium term, to be discussed at the next executive council meeting. We will then communicate how we take the next steps together.”

At Monday’s opening ceremony, it was announced the Asian Racing Federation has unanimously re-elected Engelbrecht-Bresges as chair of the ARF, a term which runs until the conclusion of the 42nd ARC in New Zealand in 2028.

HK: Lucky Sam Gor carries Newnham’s Sha Tin hopes

The trainers’ championship battle intensifies at Sha Tin on Saturday, where leader Mark Newnham seeks to maintain his advantage while the leading rivals for the handlers’ crown close in at the top. Newnham has celebrated winners at the past two Sha Tin meetings, but just four wins separate a quartet of leading trainers currently, and Newnham’s lead over David Hayes has been reduced to just one win (35-34) after a stellar opening to 2026 for last season’s championship runner-up. Hayes leads Newnham 12-9 in wins since the turn of the year, and takes seven runners to Saturday’s ten-race fixture. Newnham will be represented by six runners of his own, but one of his best chances for another visit to the winner’s arch is in-form Hong Kong Derby (2000m) hopeful Lucky Sam Gor (Press Statement). While the opening leg of the Four-Year-Old Classic Series, the Hong Kong Classic Mile (1600m) might have come just too soon for the New Zealand import, his impressive win in a Class 3 1600-metre contest on the undercard that day underlined his growing Hong Kong Derby credentials. “He’s been in very good form,” Newnham said of his hopeful, who has won four times in seven starts. “He’s just shown the benefit of a bit of maturity. Last time gave him a good start from a wide gate, and he finished the race off really strongly. He started this season probably a mark well below his true ability. He just started to show in his races at the end of last season what he’s shown us in his work prior to that, but just needed a bit of time. His rating will catch up sooner or later.”

IRE: The Aga Khan’s Shamalza tops February Sale closer at €190,000

Some choice offerings from the Aga Khan Studs helped fuel another day of “extraordinary” trade as the Goffs February Sale concluded with turnover having more than doubled year-on-year. Thursday's market was headed by the lightly-raced Shamalza (Lope De Vega), who was knocked down to Alex Elliott at €190,000 (approx. AU$319,510). The four-year-old half-sister to Railway Stakes (Gr 2, 6f) winner Shartash (Invincible Spirit) made just two starts for Dermot Weld and the Aga Khan Studs team, winning a Navan maiden on her debut before failing to fire on her only subsequent outing on heavy ground. Shamalza was initially identified as a high-end breeding prospect, but will instead get the chance to enhance her race record after the successful purchaser decided upon a change of plan. “When I came over I thought she was the best breeding prospect in the sale on page,” said Elliott. “I was looking to breed her to Kingman. But actually, when I saw her and did a bit of digging, there was potentially some racing upside there as well.” The Aga Khan Studs sold five lots for a total of €478,500 (approx. AU$804,660) at an average price of €95,700 (approx. AU$160,930). Only leading vendor The Castlebridge Consignment generated more gross receipts, with the outfit’s 23 lots bringing a combined €515,000 (approx. AU$866,030) and an average of €22,390 (approx. AU$37,650). The mixed two-day auction produced some hefty year-on-year gains right across the market indices. Turnover more than doubled to €6,301,400 (approx. AU$10.59 million), a 63 per cent gain, and the average price rose 37 per cent to €24,615 (approx. AU$41,390), while the median went up by 48 per cent to €14,750 (approx. AU$24,800) having been €10,000 12 months ago. The clearance rate was 68 per cent as 256 lots sold from 375 offered.

US: Trainer John Shirreffs dies aged 80

John Shirreffs (Credit: Racing Post)

Top American trainer John Shirreffs has died aged 80. Primarily based at Santa Anita Park, he was best known for masterminding the career of champion mare Zenyatta (Street Cry), who won 19 of her 20 starts including a staggering success in the 2009 Breeders' Cup Classic (Gr 1, 10f). She won 13 Grade 1 races, and was inducted into the US Hall of Fame. Other major successes for Shirreffs included the 2005 Kentucky Derby (Gr 1, 10f) with Giacomo (Holy Bull) and 2009 Breeders' Cup Ladies Classic (Gr 1, 9f) with Life Is Sweet (Storm Cat), while he also trained Grade 1 winners Tiago (Pleasant Tap), After Market (Storm Cat), Harmonious (Dynaformer), Express Train (Union Rags), Beyond Brilliant (Twirling Candy) and Gormley (Malibu Moon). Last year he was on the Kentucky Derby trail again with Baeza (McKinzie), who finished third to Sovereignty (Into Mischief) at Churchill Downs and in the Belmont Stakes (Gr 1, 10f) before landing the Pennsylvania Derby (Gr 1, 9f). He was last seen finishing sixth to Forever Young (Real Steel) in the Breeders' Cup Classic. Shirreffs struck up an excellent partnership with Mike Smith, who partnered Zenyatta and Giacomo, and the legendary jockey was among a host of figures to pay tribute. He said: "I think any rider will tell you that when you rode for John, you just felt good about it. It's hard to describe, but he was such a good person, and you knew that everything would be done right for the horse."

US: Preakness and Belmont-winning stallion Afleet Alex dies aged 24

US champion three-year-old Afleet Alex (Northern Afleet), winner of the 2005 Preakness Stakes (Gr 1, 9.5f) and Belmont Stakes who became a successful sire, has died at the age of 24. Gainesway Farm and ownership group Cash Is King announced that the son of Northern Afleet (Afleet) was euthanised on February 6 due to the infirmities of old age. He will be buried at Gainesway, where he had stood since retiring to stud in 2006. Bred in Florida by John Martin Silvertand out of Maggy Hawk (Hawkster), Afleet Alex was purchased for US$75,000 at the 2004 Fasig-Tipton Midlantic 2-Year-Olds in Training Sale by trainer Tim Ritchey on behalf of Bob Brittingham and Chuck Zacney. He was a standout two-year-old, winning the Sanford Stakes (Gr 2, 6f) and Hopeful Stakes (Gr 1, 7f) before ending his debut season with a pair of runner-up finishes in the Champagne Stakes (Gr 1, 8.5f) and Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (Gr 1, 8.5f). Afleet Alex returned to dominate the Arkansas Derby (Gr 2, 9f), and after a third-place finish in the Kentucky Derby, the colt then produced one of the most memorable moments in Triple Crown history when recovering from a near fall to land the Preakness. He went on to deliver another devastating performance in the Belmont, winning by seven lengths on what proved his final start. He retired with earnings of US$2,765,800 and was crowned champion three-year-old male. At stud, Afleet Alex has sired 40 black-type winners, including Grade 1 winners Afleet Express, Texas Red, Iotapa and Materiality. He also left a lasting legacy through his association with Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation, with his success on the track helping to raise millions for childhood cancer research in honour of Alex Scott, who died in 2004 aged eight. Years later he remains synonymous with the cause.
