Flying Artie (Artie Schiller) is living up to his name, with another stakes victory for his son Sixties on Saturday putting him up in lights as he bears down on his first 100-winner season.

But despite having six crops racing now, his home base Blue Gum Farm believes he’s only getting started.

The stud world has lately been dotted with stories of stallions hitting some golden years after – in some cases long after – it had been hoped they would reach a peak.

What's On

Another Victorian-based stallion, Darley’s Street Boss (Street Cry), is enjoying a distinct career boom at 21, with track stars including Saturday’s Black Caviar Lightning Stakes (Gr 1, 1000m) winning three-year-old Tentyris helping him to a personal best of eighth place on the Australian general sires’ table, and equal second by stakes winners.

Coolmore’s on-and-off shuttler Starspangledbanner (Choisir), the 19-year-old with an Australian stakes winners-to-runners ratio of 4.31 per cent, achieved the extremely rare feat of siring Europe’s Champion 2YO Colt and Filly last year in Gstaad and Precise, who both won at the highest level.

Flying Artie is a long way behind that pair in age and runners, but the 12-year-old, despite being faced with overcoming the stigma of having been moved on by another stud, is building a strong head of steam on a couple of fronts.

The Coolmore Stud Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) hero's winners-to-runners ratio of 62.42 per cent underlines his consistency, while last season’s $11,000 (inc GST) service fee puts him firmly in the value category.

But a clutch of unqualified star runners has shown him to be far more than that.

Most famously, Flying Artie is the sire of Europe’s reigning Champion Sprinter Asfoora, the brilliant mare whose three Group 1 triumphs among eight stakes wins have come in England (two) and France.

His other elite winner, Artorius, is now making inroads at his father’s former stud Newgate Farm, with his first yearlings being offered this season.

And now Artorius’s full brother Sixties is emerging as his sire's latest special one.

Chris Waller’s colt looked imperious in claiming his second Group 3 victory at start number eight in Saturday’s CS Hayes Stakes (Gr 3, 1400m) as a $1.60 favourite. Unbeaten in two starts this campaign, he’s now a $3.50 second favourite for the Australian Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) at Flemington on February 28 as he shapes to become Flying Artie’s next top-tier winner.

That is if In Flight doesn’t beat him to it. The Joe Pride-Proven Thoroughbreds five-year-old won a stakes race in each of the three eastern seaboard states last preparation, and is set to resume soon aimed at Rosehill’s The Galaxy (Gr 1, 1100m), for which she’s a $15 shot.

Flying Artie’s first – and small – Blue Gum crop is being offered at the current range of yearling sales. The full brother to his third-highest ranked offspring – triple Hong Kong stakes winner My Wish – was bought at Inglis Classic last week by Lok Lor, underscoring Flying Artie’s appeal to buyers from the territory.

This timeline means the last of the six crops Flying Artie sired at Newgate are now two years old. He was well patronised at the Hunter Valley farm, averaging 151 mares through his first five seasons there.

“I think people tend to forget he covered some big and seriously good books at Newgate,” Blue Gum Farm’s nominations and sales manager Phil Marshall told ANZ.

He’s one of the most, if not the most, underrated horses standing in the country at present,

Phil Marshall

“Those offspring are maturing now, so there’s every chance we’re going to see a lot of success from his progeny in the next 12, 18 or 24 months. I think we’ll see a lot more from Flying Artie over the next little bit.”

Flying Artie has had nine winners in the past week, starting with a Doomben double through six-year-old gelding Super Zamboni and four-year-old mare Bengal Diamond, and running through to Saturday's success of Sixties at Flemington and Chill Buddy (née Sponge Bob) in Hong Kong.

He has 58 winners in Australia for the current season after a personal best 89 last term, plus four stakes winners worldwide in Asfoora, My Wish, Sixties and his Waller stablemate Skyglider, as well as three more black type placegetters in Flying Orchid and Perth pair Ninetymilestraight and Amjaad.

“He’s one of the most, if not the most, underrated horses standing in the country at present,” Marshall said.

“When you consider he operates at a winners-to-runners ratio of significantly more than 60 per cent, and that since the start of the season he’s had four stakes winners and a further three stakes-placed horses…

“Seven stakes performers since the start of August is a phenomenal achievement, for a horse who stands at ten grand. I reckon I’ll be waiting a while for someone to find a better value horse right now.

“If you’re looking to try to produce yourself a winner, then clearly he’s the best option for anyone.”

Marshall said that Flying Artie, who has been Blue Gum’s clear flagbearer following the untimely death of Sejardan (Sebring) in November, is a consistent sire of winners but so much more.

“He’s building on his winners in Australia. He’s got 58 in Australia so far this season, so he’s on track to break the 100 mark for the first time,” Marshall said.

“And with the numbers he’s got coming through in his two, three and four-year-olds, he’s the sort of horse we’d fully expect to get 100-plus winners for the next two or three seasons at least. But he also has the runs on the board now to show he can sire a seriously good horse.

“You’ve got Asfoora and Artorius. Sixties and My Wish are Group 1 winners in waiting, and hopefully In Flight as well, so who’s to say he might not end this year with four or five Group 1 winners to his name?

“Then you'd start comparing him to sires like All Too Hard. He’s a terrific sire, and the sire of five Group 1 winners, so you’d be able to start comparing Flying Artie to those horses who are deemed superior to him at present.

“There’s too much evidence there to suggest he isn’t a good sire.”

Largely on the back of Asfoora’s deeds, Flying Artie surged in popularity with breeders last year, covering 96 mares at a reduced $11,000 after serving just 37 and 44 in the previous two years, at $16,500.

Asfoora (Credit: Edward Whitaker)

Aside from his upswinging CV, the imposing, 16.2 hand bay makes outcross appeal, being free of Danehill and his sire Danzig, and hailing from a Sadler's Wells (Northern Dancer) sireline that leads to his American father Artie Schiller.

Artorius and Sixties are out of a Redoute’s Choice (Danehill) mare, while Asfoora’s dam is by I Am Invincible (Invincible Spirit).

Marshall said it had “taken people a while to sit up and take note” of Flying Artie, and conceded he has had to battle the stigma of being moved on by Newgate.

“That’s always going to be a sticky mark for a sire,” he said. “But while that may have been a stigma for him in the first couple of years at Blue Gum, now the facts and figures speak for themselves. He’s just a very good sire, at a great price, and people just need to take him at face value and realise that.

“It was an upward curve for him last year in terms of numbers. I’d expect him to cover a similar number this breeding season, and I think he’s going to go from strength to strength in the next 12 months or so.

“He’s a very underrated sire who ticks a lot of boxes, and he suits the Danehill line mares so well.

“Trainers are starting to realise that Flying Arties are the horses they want in their stables. He reminds me a lot of Magnus, for the fact that his stock wins a lot of races, and trainers need to win races.”

Marshall said Blue Gum had yet to determine Flying Artie’s service fee for this year, but added “we want to make sure he’s still good value and within reach of every breeder in the country.”

Morning Briefing

Tentyris faces weight query as Newmarket looms

Tentyris (Credit: Racing Photos)

The Anthony and Sam Freedman-trained Tentyris (Street Boss) was electric in Saturday’s Black Caviar Lightning Stakes (Gr 1, 1000m), rounding up his seven rivals in a matter of strides before pulling clear late.

The dominant victory saw the colt firm into $1.75 for the Newmarket Handicap (Gr 1, 1200m) in all-in betting, but his participation is far from certain with a potentially hefty weight impost the key consideration.

Sam Freedman is content to leave the matter in the hands of Racing Victoria chief handicapper David Hegan.

“I’d rather the pressure go on to Dave Hegan than us,” he said. “Coming into this prep we were thinking he’d have 54.5 or 55 kilos. It’s obviously likely he’ll have more. But it’s relative to what else is there. If there’s no superstar or nothing thrown in at the weights, you could potentially line up.”

With Giga Kick (Scissor Kick) and Joliestar (Zoustar) both unlikely to line up at this stage, the scenario exists that Tentyris could be allotted 59 kilograms, and no horse has carried that weight to victory in the modern era.

Hay List (Statue Of Liberty) lumped 58.5kg when winning in 2012, while Nature Strip (Nicconi) did not run after being given 59.5kg in 2013.

“I think 59 kilos sounds ridiculous, to be honest, for a three-year-old in a Newmarket,” Freedman said. “I’m not sure how many have carried that weight at all in the race, but it is what it is.

“You’re a victim of everyone having so many options. You’d love to see some of those better horses have to run in a Newmarket because there are no other options. In the past you’d have big fields, horses right down in the weights and horses carrying big weights in a proper handicap.”

Beyond the autumn, Freedman confirmed there is strong interest in testing Tentyris on the international stage, with Royal Ascot having been mooted since his Coolmore Stud Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) victory.

“We’d love to, and there’s an appetite from Godolphin to see him travelling,” he said. “Then there’s an Everest where he can take on Ka Ying Rising. I’d love that sort of challenge.”

Freedmans in search of another Group 1 sprint

Tropicus (Credit: Racing Photos)

Fresh from Tentyris’ explosive Lightning triumph, Anthony and Sam Freedman will attempt to secure another Group 1 sprint with Tropicus (Too Darn Hot) and Point Barrow (Blue Point) in Saturday’s Oakleigh Plate (Gr 1, 1100m) at Caulfield. Both sprinters will resume in the autumn handicap feature, with Tropicus having not raced since finishing sixth behind Giga Kick in the Champions Sprint (Gr 1, 1200m), while Point Barrow was last seen claiming the Red Roses Stakes (Gr 3, 1100m) at Flemington on Oaks Day. Sam Freedman said both had been set specifically for the race, though they bring contrasting racing styles to the contest. Point Barrow heads into Saturday’s assignment off two jump-outs, most recently at Balnarring on January 28 when partnered by Jamie Melham, who takes the ride. “She’s had a great prep,” Freedman said. “She’s ready to run a really good race and just needs a bit of luck. She’s a bit like Tentyris, she sits back and has that powerful finish, and hopefully it’s a similar result.” Meanwhile, Tropicus won his first jump-out at Mornington last month before finishing second, just ahead of Tentyris, in another heat at the same venue on January 22. “Tropicus has a great Caulfield record and 1100 metres first-up suits him,” Freedman said. “Tactically it works well as he’ll be on speed, but I just don’t know what weight he’ll get. I thought he might get 52 kilos in a normal year, but it looks like he might be up around the 56 mark, which makes it tough. That said, he’ll take luck out of it by being up there.”

Autumn Boy set to resume without blinkers in Hobartville

Caulfield Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) winner Autumn Boy (The Autumn Sun) is likely to resume without blinkers in next Saturday’s Hobartville Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m) at Rosehill, with champion jockey James McDonald convinced the colt does not require them. McDonald partnered the three-year-old in a 1000-metre exhibition gallop between races at Randwick on Saturday, where he clocked 1:08.25 in a solo workout and stretched out strongly through the line. Autumn Boy has not been seen since his spring triumph, when he raced in blinkers, but trainer Chris Waller indicated they are likely to be left off for his return. “We’re probably going to leave the blinkers off,” Waller said. “James doesn’t think he needs them. We only put them on in the Golden Rose and the Caulfield Guineas. He’s a very honest horse.” Waller said Autumn Boy had strengthened during his break and believed his relaxed demeanour would be a key asset heading into the autumn. His first two starts are set to come against his own age, on Saturday and in the Randwick Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) on March 7. Beyond that, Waller is open to testing him against older horses. Stablemate Wodeton (Wootton Bassett), who ran on for third behind Tempted (Street Boss) in the Eskimo Prince Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) last start, will also be nominated for the Hobartville Stakes, with a final decision on his participation to be made later in the week.

Lindsay Park weighing up four-pronged Blue Diamond assault

Lindsay Park could pay up the $55,000 late entry fee for as many as four juveniles for Saturday’s Blue Diamond Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) at Caulfield following Hard Kick’s (All Too Hard) devastating debut victory in Talindert (Listed, 1100m) at Flemington. Co-trainer Ben Hayes said the son of All Too Hard (Casino Prince) could join Torture (Sword Of State), and possibly Eurocanto (Per Incanto) and Jacaranda (Home Affairs) in the $2 million feature, depending on how he pulls up from his first-up performance. “Ideally, we’d love four, but I don’t think four will get in,” Hayes told Racing.com. “If he pulls up great, we’ll do it. I think it’s an open race this year. There’s no real standout and I might be biased, but that was probably one of the better two-year-old wins of the season. He’s tough, very sound and he can run well.” On Debutant Stakes (Listed, 1000m) winner Torture, Hayes said: “We are very happy with her. She trialled really well [on Saturday] with the blinkers on. We’re quite confident she’ll run very well.” Hayes said that Maribyrnong Trial Stakes (Listed, 1000m) winner Eurocanto pulled up fine after a disappointing sixth in the Blue Diamond Prelude (Gr 3, 1100m) (C\&G). “We were really disappointed with his racing manners,” he added. “He was too aggressive and let himself down. We will work him on Monday and if he works well, we might roll the dice.” Meanwhile, the stable are hoping Inglis Millennium (RL, 1100m) fifth Jacaranda can make the field. “She was good through the line the other day, but at this stage she looks like she might be an emergency,” Hayes said. “The other option is to go to Flemington a week later.”

Playin'it Sweet lands Challenge Stakes at Ascot

Playin'it Sweet (3 f Playing God – Sweet Ora by Oratorio) added a third black type win to her CV on Sunday when narrowly landing the Challenge Stakes (Listed, 1500m) at Ascot. Bred and raced by Rod Cosgrove and family, the daughter of Playing God (Blackfriars) was a last-start winner of the Western Australian Breeders' Classic (Listed, 1200m) at Bunbury and successfully stepped up in trip to deny Dominatus (Ducimus) by 0.1 lengths in the 1500-metre contest. Third placegetter Aberdeen Flyer (Astern) was the same margin further back in a tight finish.

Yulong secures Autumn Glory ahead of NZ Oaks bid

Waikato Guineas (Gr 2, 2000m) winner Autumn Glory (Ocean Park) has been purchased by Yulong ahead of Saturday’s New Zealand Oaks (Gr 1, 2400m) at Ellerslie. The Roger James and Robert Wellwood-trained filly stamped herself an Oaks contender when dominating her male rivals at Te Rapa last week, advancing her record to two wins from three starts. Bred and raced by the Smithies family under their Monovale Holdings banner, her sale further strengthens Yulong’s growing footprint in New Zealand, with Oaks favourite Ohope Wins (Ocean Park) and unbeaten star Well Written (Written Tycoon) also in the operation’s tutelage. “It’s a privilege to have owners of their magnitude in the stable, and it’s great to see them becoming involved in New Zealand in a bigger way,” James said. “I think it’s a reflection of what we can offer in New Zealand. Our aim is the Oaks and what happens after will be discussed post-race, but it’s a Group 1 and that’s what we’re focused on. We’re really happy with her. She’s feeling well and looks great.” Monovale’s Joe Smithies said the sale aligned with the farm’s commercial model. “Yulong has purchased her outright and she’ll stay with Roger and Robert for the Oaks,” Smithies said. “We’ve got to stick to our core business model of breeding for the yearling sales. With Autumn Glory, we were a touch behind where we thought she needed to be for the sales, so we elected to hold on to her. We always really liked her.” The Smithies also retain stakes-winning filly Acer (Savabeel), who is set to line up as an outsider in the Oaks. “It’s a huge buzz to have bred two running in the Oaks,” Smithies said. “That's why we do it.”

Timaru gelding too Smooth in Invercargill Gold Cup

Smooth Operator (Credit: Monica Toretto)

A $50,000 carrot is now dangling in front of the connections of Timaru gelding Smooth Operator (Turn Me Loose) following his dominant victory in Saturday’s Invercargill Gold Cup (2600m) at Ascot Park. The race marked the second leg of the Southern Cups Bonus Series, where a $50,000 winner-takes-all bonus is on offer. Smooth Operator now shares top spot on five points alongside Gore Cup (2200m) winner In Vegas (Telperion). Sent out a $2.90 favourite from the ace draw, Smooth Operator enjoyed a rail-hugging trip under jockey Tina Comignaghi. Momentarily held up approaching the 600 metres, Comignaghi was patient before angling into clear running at the top of the straight. Smooth Operator quickly ranged up alongside leader Caffeinated (Belardo) before powering clear to score by 6.2 lengths. Having finished third in the race last year, trainer Stephanie Faulkner was thrilled to go two better this time around. “I was a little bit worried – there wasn’t a lot of pace on,” Faulkner said. “He was pulling a bit, but Tina was patient as ever, gave him a beautiful trip and had him in the right spot at the right time. He showed them what he can do.” The Southern Cups Series continues at Wingatui next week with the Dunedin Gold Cup (Listed, 2400m), which Smooth Operator finished runner-up in last year. The series then moves to Gore for the Wyndham Cup (2000m) before culminating at Riverton on April 4 with the Riverton Cup (2147m), where double points will be on offer. “We will press on to the final at Riverton,” Faulkner said. “It’s really exciting.”

Vale Martin Dennis

One of New Zealand racing’s most recognisable breeding families has lost another cornerstone with the passing of Martin Dennis, aged 82. The youngest of the famed Dennis brothers quartet, Martin’s death follows that of brother Tony in September, marking a difficult six months for the Southland-based family. For more than 60 years, the Dennis brothers were pillars of South Island thoroughbred racing, producing elite performers from their Woodlands property. Martin’s nephew, Southland trainer Robert Dennis, said his uncle’s greatest strength lay in breeding and pedigree analysis. “He was an integral part of their operation,” Robert said. “He was extremely knowledgeable about pedigrees and crosses. He analysed stallions and mares and had his own rating system. When buying horses, I would always call on him for his opinion.” The Dennis colours became synonymous with success through their trademark “The” prefix, carried by Group 1 stars such as The Twinkle (Gate Keeper), The Phantom (Noble Bijou), The Phantom Chance (Noble Bijou) and The Jewel (O'Reilly). More recently, The Chosen One (Savabeel) added further elite-level success and major Australian placings. Fittingly, Martin enjoyed one final raceday highlight last weekend when The Ocean Heart (Ocean Park) and The Princie One (Savabeel) produced a winning double at Wingatui. “Martin was at home with family and friends and really enjoyed the day. It was a good send-off for him,” Robert said. A Requiem Mass will be held at St Theresa’s Catholic Church, Invercargill, on Tuesday, February 17 at 2.30pm, with bright colours to be worn in accordance with his wishes.

30 for Shamardal

The newly upgraded Neom Turf Cup (G1, 2100m) on Riyadh’s Saudi Cup card produced a milestone result for the late Shamardal (Giant’s Causeway), with Royal Champion (8 g ex Emirates Queen by Street Cry) becoming the stallion’s 30th individual elite-level winner. Trained by Karl Burke for his late owner-breeder Sheikh Mohammed Obaid Al Maktoum, Royal Champion comfortably accounted for 2024 Dubai Turf (Gr 1, 1800m) winner Facteur Cheval (Ribchester) to secure his first top-flight success by four and three-quarter lengths. Winner of the Bahrain International Trophy (Gr 2, 2000m) on his previous start, the eight-year-old is a out of Group 2 winner Emirates Queen (Street Cry), herself a half-sister to Darley’s breed-shaping sire Dubawi (Dubai Millennium). Emirates Queen is also the dam of the Group 2-winning globetrotter Outbox (Frankel). Shamardal died in 2020 aged 18.

KSA: Forever Young becomes first dual Saudi Cup winner

Forever Young (Credit: John Grossick)

Japanese star Forever Young (Real Steel) etched his name further into history when becoming the first dual winner of the Saudi Cup (Gr 1, 1800m) on Saturday, producing another tenacious display to defend his crown in Riyadh.

Ridden by Ryusei Sakai, the entire hugged the inside rail throughout, enduring kickback in a ground-saving ride which ultimately proved decisive.

When a split appeared at the top of the straight, Sakai drove the five-year-old through along the fence and he responded bravely, holding off the sustained late surge of American challenger Nysos (Nyquist) to win by a length, with Tumbarumba (Oscar Performance) finishing another three and three-quarter lengths back in third.

Nysos’ trainer Bob Baffert admitted he feared the worst once the gap opened for the defending champion, who bravely thwarted the huge effort of Romantic Warrior (Acclamation) in 2025.

“Forever Young got a perfect trip and when that rail opened up I thought, ‘Oh man’,” Baffert said. “His jockey rides him with a lot of confidence and when you’re taking him on you need everything to go your way.

“We’ve shown up and run well, but we’ve been beaten by a good horse. I didn’t think Forever Young would show up like that today – but he did.”

The victory further enhanced the global résumé of Forever Young, who now boasts four Group/Grade 1 victories across Japan, Saudi Arabia and the US, with his other career highlight being a gritty win in last November’s Breeders’ Cup Classic (Gr 1, 10f) at Del Mar.

It also prompted owner Susumu Fujita to leave the door open for another potential title defence in 2026.

“My plan had been to retire him this year, but I can give him an extra two months to come back to this race,” Fujita said. “I would also like to see him run more in Japan. We haven’t thought past the Dubai World Cup, but another Saudi Cup – that is my dream.”

KSA: Baffert’s Imagination lands Riyadh Dirt Sprint

US raider Imagination (5 h Into Mischief – Magical Feeling, by Empire Maker) claimed his third Group/Grade 2 victory when he produced a powerful late surge to win the Riyadh Dirt Sprint (Gr 2, 1200m) on Saturday. Trained by Bob Baffert and ridden by Flavien Prat, the five-year-old son of Into Mischief (Harlan’s Holiday) overcame early interference and, departing from his usual on-pace pattern, was allowed to settle before launching down the outside in the straight. He reeled in longtime leader and compatriot Just Beat The Odds (Munnings) to score by three-quarters of a length. Local runner Muqtahem (Soldier’s Call) was the same distance further back in third. “For the first time, that last 100 metres was kind to me,” Baffert said, referencing previous near-misses in Saudi Arabia. The victory secured Imagination an automatic berth into the Breeders’ Cup Sprint (Gr 1, 6f) at Keeneland in October. He finished runner-up in the Grade 1 at Del Mar last November.

KSA: Reef Runner denies Lazzat in 1351 Turf Sprint

US gelding Reef Runner (5 g The Big Beast – Paradise Bay, by Blame) produced a well-timed finishing burst to claim Saturday’s 1351 Turf Sprint (Gr 2, 1351m) at Riyadh, edging out Group 1 winner and 2024 Golden Eagle (1500m) runner-up Lazzat (Territories) by a neck. Ridden by Irad Ortiz Jr for trainer David Fawkes, Reef Runner tracked Lazzat into the straight and once presented with clear running, lengthened to overhaul the French raider in the final strides. Comanche Brave (Wootton Bassett) finished three-quarters of a length further back in third. “I know we beat a really good horse from France,” Fawkes said. “I think we might go to Dubai next if we get invited.”

KSA: Sons And Lovers adds second Group win

Joseph O’Brien secured his first winner at the Saudi Cup meeting as Irish stayer Sons And Lovers (5 g Study Of Man – So In Love, by Smart Strike) landed Saturday’s Red Sea Turf Handicap (Gr 2, 3000m) at Riyadh. Ridden by Dylan Browne McMonagle, the Study Of Man (Deep Impact) gelding enjoyed a prominent trip along the rail behind stablemate Tennessee Stud (Wootton Bassett) who set a steady tempo. Easing into clear running turning for home, Sons And Lovers quickened to take control before fending off late challenges, scoring by a half-length over Tabletalk (Camelot) who finished a a neck ahead of third-placed Tarriance (Frankel). Real Dream (Lope De Vega) was a nose further back in fourth. O’Brien said the win represented a career-best performance from the progressive stayer, already a Group 3 winner over 1m 4f and stepping up to 3000 metres for the first time. “He’s really developed well and this was obviously a career-best,” O’Brien said. “It was his first try at the distance and Dylan gave him a lovely ride. He was tough when he had to be. Dubai is a legitimate possibility next. It’s a special win; it’s a privilege to compete here and even more special to win.”

JPN: Second Grade 2 strike for June Take

June Take (5 h Kizuna - Admire Sabrina by Symboli Kris S) claimed Grade 2 honours for the second time in The Kyoto Kinen (Gr 2, 2200m) at Kyoto on Sunday. The Hidenori Take-trained entire defeated last year’s Kikuka Sho (Gr 1, 3000m) runner-up Eri King (Kizuna) by a half-length, with another length and a quarter back to Ecoro Dinos (Kitasan Black) in third. The win marked the five-year-old’s first since taking out the Kyoto Shimbun Hai (Gr 2, 2200m) in 2024.

JPN: Grade 3 honours for Realize Sirius

Juvenile Grade 3 winner Realize Sirius (3 c Poetic Flare - Red Mirabel by Stay Gold) doubled his stakes win tally when he took out The Kyodo Tsushin Hai (Gr 3, 1800m) at Tokyo on Sunday. Ridden by Akihide Tsumura for trainer Takahisa Tezuka, the three-year-old colt denied Bereshit (Epiphaneia) by a head, with another neck back to Lovecen (World Premiere) in third.

71 for Not This Time

Claret Beret (5 m ex Bessie M by Medallist) provided trainer Saffie Joseph Jr with a third consecutive win in the Royal Delta Stakes (Gr 3, 8.5f) at Gulfstream Park on Saturday, also giving her Taylor Made Stallions sire Not This Time (Giant’s Causeway) his 71 individual stakes winner. Ridden patiently by Micah Husbands, the mare advanced three-wide approaching the home turn before fanning five-deep into the straight and surging clear to score by five lengths. Resuming Grade 3 scorer Alpine Princess (Classic Empire) edged the winner’s stablemate Eunomia (Tiz The Law) for second. Bred by Mitch Haynes, Claret Beret was a US$375,000 purchase for David Redvers at the 2022 Keeneland September Yearling Sale having sold for US$85,000 earlier that year. She is the first stakes winner out of placed Medallist (Touch Gold) mare Bessie M. Not This Time will stand for US$250,000 (approx. AU$353,250) in 2026.

158 for Lope De Vega

Ballylinch Stud star Lope De Vega (Shamardal) registered his 158th individual stakes winner on Saturday when Mondego (6 g ex Free Rein by Dansili) claimed the San Marcos Stakes (Gr 3, 10f) at Santa Anita. Ridden by Emisael Jaramillo for trainer Michael McCarthy, the six-year-old proved a length too good for Flashiest (Mizzen Mast) with Truly Quality (Quality Road) just a head further adrift in third. Bred by Car Colston Hall Stud, Mondego sold for 230,000gns to agent Mike Ryan at Book 1 of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale in 2021. He is a half-brother to Group 3-winning filly West End Girl (Golden Horn) out of Dansili (Danehill) mare Free Rein, herself a half-sister to four stakes performers, including dual Group 1-winning juvenile Reckless Abandon (Exchange Rate). Lope De Vega will command a career-high fee of €200,000 (approx. 335,360) in 2026.

US: Paladin takes the Risen Star

Paladin (3 c Gun Runner - Secret Sign by Tapit) strengthened his claim as a leading Kentucky Derby (Gr 1, 10f) contender when he landed the Risen Star Stakes (Gr 2, 9f) at Fair Grounds on Saturday. The Chad Brown-trained son of Gun Runner (Candy Ride) reeled in front runner Chip Honcho (Connect) in the final stages to score by a half-length, with Golden Tempo (Curlin) another five and a half lengths back in third. Paladin earned 50 qualifying points and moved to the top of the Kentucky Derby leaderboard with 60 points overall. He had previously secured ten points for his Remsen Stakes (Gr 2, 9f) victory at Aqueduct last year.

US: Bella Ballerina dances to Grade 2 victory

Bella Ballerina (3 f Street Sense - Pretty City Dancer by Tapit) made a winning three-year-old debut at Fair Grounds on Saturday, landing the Rachel Alexandra Stakes (Gr 2, 8.5f) and extending her perfect record to three. The Street Sense (Street Cry) filly, trained by Brendan Walsh for owner-breeder Godolphin, broke awkwardly but quickly recovered to assume control, setting steady fractions under Tyler Gaffalione. Stalking rival Luv Your Neighbor (Constitution) loomed ominously on the home turn and briefly edged past in the straight, but Bella Ballerina rallied strongly along the rail to reclaim the advantage and prevail by a half-length. Just Singing (Justify) finished third, another two and a half lengths behind. “Hats off to her – she fought hard when she could’ve got beat,” Walsh said. “She’ll improve a lot from that. She probably needed it, but was still able to get the job done.” Bella Ballerina had not raced since landing the Golden Rod Stakes (Gr 2, 8.5f) at Churchill Downs in November. Her resuming win mirrored the success of her Into Mischief (Harlan’s Holiday) half-sister Pretty Mischievous, who captured the same race in 2023 for the same trainer, owner and jockey combination before going on to Kentucky Oaks (Gr 1, 9f) glory two starts later.
