Grinzinger Heart (Credit: Racing Photos)

Fresh from once more topping the aggregates at his home state yearling sale Inglis Premier, Swettenham Stud’s Toronado (High Chaparral) is flying high again after his first Australian two-year-old stakes winner on Saturday.

Grinzinger Heart (Toronado) clung on tenaciously to take the VRC Sires’ Produce Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m) by 0.06 lengths at Flemington at only her second start, after leading all the way.

It was a victory for the battlers, with the filly blowing to $41 and upsetting Godolphin’s $1.65 hot pot Zambales (Pinatubo), who continued Darley’s tantalising wait for a first winner for shuttler Pinatubo (Shamardal) which has so far brought three stakes placegetters among ten runners.

What's On

The success of Grinzinger Heart – a $110,000 Magic Millions Gold Coast buy for prominent owner John Wheeler from NSW breeders Lustre Lodge – was also the first at stakes level for young trainer Ben Brisbourne, the expat Briton who now calls Wangaratta home.

And it showed another string to Toronado’s bow.

The 16-year-old son of High Chaparral (Sadler’s Wells) has forged an impressive career at Swettenham, building a reputation as one of Victoria’s top two stallions alongside Yulong’s 23-year-old Written Tycoon (Iglesia), which led his owners Al Shaqab Racing to stop shuttling him from France and leave him in Australia from 2022.

Last week, a total spend of $5.04 million on his progeny saw Toronado finish the leading sire by aggregate at Premier for the third year running – and for the fourth time in five years following a narrow second to I Am Invincible (Invincible Spirit) in 2023.

Toronado has finished in the top 13 on the Australian general sires’ list in three of the past four seasons, and currently sits 15th. Written Tycoon is the only Victorian stallion sitting higher in 12th.

While it’s a term often bandied about without solid statistical backing, Toronado is also genuinely successful and popular in Hong Kong, where he has 32 winners, five coming at stakes-level from 59 runners at 8.47 per cent, headed by 2024 Centenary Sprint Cup (Gr 1, 1200m) hero Victor The Winner.

His strength in the territory is also reflected by the fact that he has two of the leading market fancies for the Hong Kong Derby (Listed, 2000m) on March 22 in Stormy Grove and Little Paradise.

Also in Hong Kong, he has six-year-old sprinter Helios Express, who’s a triple stakes winner amid eight career victories, but has also been unlucky enough to run second to the great Ka Ying Rising (Shamexpress) seven times, five of those at Group 1 level.

All this would seem to support the contention that Swettenham’s flagbearer has mostly been renowned for producing performers aged three and older.

But while Toronado has only two juveniles amongst his 49 stakes winners worldwide – with the previous one coming at Royal Ascot in 2020 via gelding Tactical in the Windsor Castle Stakes (Listed, 5f) – Swettenham principal Adam Sangster says the stallion has proven he can leave quality two-year-olds.

Toronado indeed boasts two of the seven winners of Victoria’s million-dollar (but non-black type) juvenile event, the VOBIS Platinum Showdown (1200m).

Gelding Prince Of Sussex won its inaugural edition in 2019, before going on to win and be thrice stakes-placed in Hong Kong, while filly Shesallshenanigans was victorious in 2023.

And among his top 27-ranked performers, eight of them have won at two.

“It was great to see Grinzinger Heart win on Saturday,” Sangster told ANZ News, of the filly who’d debuted with a fourth in Flemington’s Talindert Stakes (Listed, 1100m). “Seeing what she’d done in the Talindert, it was good to see her go on with it.

“It was great to see the win for Ben Brisbourne, who’s a damn good trainer. He flies under the radar a bit, but I think he’s got real talent.

“And of course it was great for Toronado. We know how good Toronado is. He’s thrown some very nice horses in Europe which are two-year-olds. Down here, he’s more known for his three-year-olds so far, but really, they come in all shapes and sizes and he’s just a really consistent sire.”

Sangster said it should be remembered the VOBIS Platinum Showdown, open to juveniles by Victoria-based stallions, had helped put Toronado on the map in Australia.

“His first Showdown winner, Prince Of Sussex, came from his first Australian crop,” Sangster said. “Because of that, Toronado got an extraordinarily strong book in his fourth season, which really endorsed the fact that the Showdown has an effect in the breeding barn for those Victorian-breds.

“So, big tick to the powers that be who organised the Showdown, and to acknowledge Victorian-breds, because it certainly helped Toronado get the numbers, and subsequently those numbers have transpired into people making good money on Toronados.

“He’s done well for breeders, traders, sales companies, pinhookers, and trainers. And he’s done well for me and the owners Al Shaqab.”

Sangster said Grinzinger Heart had again flown the flag for Toronado’s fillies on a day when another one – three-year-old Confesara – won impressively over 1500 metres for Roger James and Robert Wellwood at the feature raceday at Ellerslie.

Toronado’s offspring have an almost even gender split in terms of results. His colts include 384 winners and 26 stakes winners, compared to 371 and 23 for his females.

“To see his fillies coming through is just wonderful,” Sangster said. “His fillies and mares are doing a damn good job in Australia, while so many of his males are aimed up towards trading to Hong Kong.

“But Toronado’s success is testament to breeders having faith in him. Not only does he throw an exceptional sales horse, and he very much stamps them and they’re very good movers, but they obviously also suit Hong Kong and the conditions up there.

“He’s young, he’s fertile, he’s got the runs on the board and he’s just going to get stronger and stronger.”

Toronado (Credit: Swettenham Stud)

Toronado also showed strong recovery powers last spring, after he was laid low before the start of the breeding season due to a hock injury and subsequent infection. While it was feared he might miss the entire spring, he was back breeding in time to cover 84 mares – well down from his 170 in 2024, but a hefty amount considering his restricted availability.

“We were guarded, you prepare for the worst and hope for the best, but in the end he only missed six weeks, and was back at it in early October. Maybe watching our other stallions walk past him en route to the covering shed was a good incentive to him,” Sangster quipped.

“Then he covered better than he has ever done. Plus, being such a fertile horse, he was popular at the back end of the season with a lot of mares who’d missed at their first goes with other stallions.”

Toronado will stand at an unchanged $88,000 (inc GST) fee this spring alongside his four barnmates I Am Immortal (I Am Invincible), Lofty Strike (Snitzel), Wooded (Wootton Bassett) and new shuttler Diego Velazquez (Frankel). Rising 18-year-old Puissance De Lune (Shamardal) is headed to retirement.

“We’ll be keeping Toronado’s service fee at the same level again, and that will give breeders a great chance to make good money, and I’m sure he’ll be well patronised again,” Sangster said.

Toronado will be represented by 12 lots at the Inglis Easter Yearling Sale late this month, offered by a spread of breeders from Victoria, NSW, Queensland, Western Australia and New Zealand.

Morning Briefing

Australia

33 for All Too Hard

Music Time (2 g ex Miss Eisenstadt by Manhattan Rain) became the 33rd individual stakes winner for Vinery Stud stallion All Too Hard (Casino Prince) when taking out Sunday’s Black Opal Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) at Canberra. Ridden by Pierre Boudvillain for trainer Gratz Vella, the juvenile gelding scored by 1.7 lengths over Pearl Of Dubai (Wootton Bassett), supplementing his win in the Black Opal Preview (1000m) last month. There was a further 0.8 lengths back to Threads (Snitzel) in third place. “From day one, Music Time showed me he would be competitive in the Black Opal,” said Vella. “Have a look at what he did today, he did it hard taking on the other of the local horses [Bar Jester, fourth] for the lead but the way he finished off was unreal. I’m going to be fair to him, he will go out for a spell and hopefully when he comes back we can look at bigger things.” Bred by Greg Perry, Music Time was a $45,000 purchase for Vella Lodge from the Vinery Stud draft at the 2025 Inglis Classic Yearling Sale and is the fourth winner from as many to race out of the Manhattan Rain (Encosta De Lago) mare Miss Eisenstadt, making him a half-brother to Manihi Classic (Listed, 1100m) winner Little Miss Kubi (Headwater). All Too Hard stood the 2025 breeding season for a fee of $27,500 (inc GST) and covered a book of 154 mares.

Six for Ole Kirk

In what proved a good day for Vinery Stud stallions, Ole Kirk (Written Tycoon) sired his sixth individual stakes winner when Aerodrome (3 g ex She Shao Fly by Epaulette) landed Sunday’s Canberra Guineas (Listed, 1400m) at Canberra. Ridden by Regan Bayliss for trainer Michael Freedman, last year’s J.J. Atkins (Gr 1, 1600m) fifth proved 0.8 lengths too strong for Cando Attitude (D’Argento) with a further 0.2 lengths back to the third-placed Azarax (Hello Youmzain). Bred by Gilgai Farm, Aerodrome was a $190,000 Inglis Easter purchase from Gilgai for Nine9park and is the first foal out of the Group 3-winning Epaulette (Military Plume) mare She Shao Fly. Gilgai also sold the third foal from She Shao Fly, a full sister to Aerodrome, to Bennett Racing for $430,000 at Inglis Premier last week. Ole Kirk covered 161 mares in the spring standing at a fee of $99,000 (inc GST).

173 for Frankel

Green Fly (7 g ex Via Pisa by Pivotal) became the 173rd individual stakes winner for Juddmonte’s breed-shaping stallion Frankel (Galileo) when taking out Sunday’s National Sprint (Listed, 1400m) at Canberra. Trained by Anthony and Sam Freedman, the seven-year-old gelding came from last rounding the home bend to produce a withering late run under Tim Clark and deny Ducasse (Trapeze Artist) by 0.3 lengths at the line. There was a further 1.2 lengths back to Magnatear (Written Tycoon) in third place. Racing in the colours of OTI Racing, the French import is the second foal out of the Listed-winning Pivotal (Polar Falcon) mare Via Pisa, herself a half-sister to Group 1 winner and former Arrowfield shuttler Admire Mars (Daiwa Major) and Listed winner Via Firenze (Dansili). Frankel is standing the 2026 northern hemisphere breeding season at Banstead Manor Stud for a fee of £350,000 (approx. AU$666,900).

Touristic lands Canberra Cup for Snowden

It was a stakes double for Frankel at Canberra as the Peter Snowden-trained Touristic (7 g Frankel - Heuristique by Shamardal) landed his second black type success when toughing it out in Sunday’s Canberra Cup (Listed, 2000m). Ridden by Andrew Adkins, the seven-year-old gelding denied Geemes (Grunt) by 0.3 lengths with a further 1.2 lengths back to Travolta (Lope De Vega) in third place. Sunday’s win added to Touristic’s victory in last May’s Lord Mayors Cup (Listed, 2000m).

Stretan Angel added to Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale

Stretan Angel (Credit: Racing Photos)

Group 1 performed sprinter Stretan Angel (Harry Angel) has added more star power to May’s Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale with connections confirming she will be offered at the Gold Coast auction.

Having landed a trio of stakes wins and three Group 1 placings, five-year-old Stretan Angel is also a half-sister to this season’s exciting juvenile Stretan Ruler (Wild Ruler) – who ran second in the Todman Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) on Saturday.

To be offered through the Yarraman Park Stud draft, the Phillip Stokes-trained Stretan Angel is sure to be among the most admired breeding prospects to be offered in 2026.

“She’s always oozed class since the day she came back from the breakers,” Stokes' assistant Tommy Stokes said. “We knew she had a good brain on her.

“As you can see from her time as a two-year-old, we contested great races straight away with her. She showed right from the start she was a high class racehorse.

“Although she hasn’t won a Group 1 she’s always been in the mix with the top-level elite sprinters during her whole career – she’s a consistent mare with an outcross.”

Another quality offering for the Yarraman Park Stud draft is the well-related stakes winner Gala Queen (Deep Field).

The Morphettville Guineas (Listed, 1600m)-winning daughter of Deep Field (Northern Meteor) is a half-sister to the Triscay Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) and Magic Millions Cup (RL, 1400m) winner Semana (Winning Rupert). Their juvenile half-brother Knightsbridge (Farnan) is a highly regarded juvenile this season for the Waterhouse and Bott stable.

“Yarraman is proud to present an exciting group of race fillies and mares at this year’s Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale, highlighted by Stretan Angel,” Yarraman principal Arthur Mitchell said.

“We’re assembling another strong lineup for this sale, including Gala Queen for the Stokes stable, So Glamorous for Grahame Begg, plus in-foal mares such as Seonee for Joe O’Neill’s Prime Thoroughbreds, Seonee being in foal to Hellbent.”

Entries for the 2026 Magic Millions National Sale are now open and other previously announced highlight lots for the racefillies and mares section include Saturday’s Group 1 winner, New Zealand champion Legarto (Proisir), Australasian Oaks (Gr 1, 2000m) winner Vibrant Sun (The Autumn Sun) and multiple Magic Millions 2YO Classic (RL, 1200m) winner O’ Ole (Ole Kirk).

Berkeley Square bidding to make history in Adelaide Cup

Berkeley Square (Territories) will need to set a weight carrying record since the introduction of metrics to win Monday's Adelaide Cup (Gr 2, 3200m). The Dan O'Sullivan-trained gelding has been allotted 59.5 kilograms, which is 1.5 kilograms more than Hyperno (Rangong) (1978) and Gallic (Zabeel) (2007) carried in their respective victories since the introduction of metrics in 1973. A Group 2 scorer and a dual winner of the Ballarat Cup (Listed, 2000m), Berkeley Square will have in-form jockey Luke Nolen aboard and was handed his hefty impost following a win over 2500 metres at Flemington under Nolen on February 14. "It would be good to go back and do it again, especially for his owners who are Adelaide based," O'Sullivan said. "Some haven't seen him race for a little while. It was a good ride [last time out]. He looked after the horse and made sure he ran the trip out with the view of going up to two miles. I've got no problems with the trip. I think he can do whatever we want him to do. He's never done that and you want to see it, but it won't be easy with the weight, but he is a big bugger, and he has the form on the board. He is a Group 2 winner and has done a lot more than some of the others in the race."

Newfoundland bidding to go one better in Adelaide

Newfoundland (Credit: Racing Photos)

Having finished runner-up in the Adelaide Cup last year, the Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott-trained Newfoundland (Deep Impact) will bid to go one better on Monday when he returns to the 3200-metre Group 2. The gelding is set to be ridden by Tim Clark, who was aboard for the seven-year-old's Australia Day Cup (Listed, 2400m) win in January and has also won two other Benchmark races on the son of Deep Impact (Sunday Silence). “He seems to get on well with him,” Bott told Racing.com. “He’s got a good record on him; he knows him well so I’m sure he’ll be keen to get down there. He ran a good honest race [last year] and we tried to find a similar sort of build-up for him. His run two starts ago [in the Australia Day Cup] was very good. He probably wasn’t necessarily suited by the sit-and-sprint style of race there at Flemington last start, but I thought he stuck on nicely. This has always been the aim for him, so I think it sets up well. He’s proven at the trip; he runs it out well and blinkers go back on now at this point of the preparation for him."

Moloney ‘hopeful’ with Dictionary in cup

Cranbourne-based trainer John Moloney is hoping for a big effort from Dictionary (All Too Hard) in Monday's Adelaide Cup. The six-year-old gelding is out of the unraced Desert King (Danehill) mare Collins, who is a sister to the late great Makybe Diva, and, despite having yet to run a trip further than 2600 metres, Moloney is hopeful that his runner can stay the 3200-metre distance. “He’s a slow horse, but he stays,” Moloney told Racing.com. “You’ve got to believe he can get into the finish. We’ve drawn a good gate [six] and we are pretty hopeful. He’s at an age where I thought we’d take a chance. He ran well here [Flemington] the other day, only beaten a length and a half without luck and Berkeley [Square] is going over and we were a length or so off him he’s got 59.5 [kilograms] over 3200 metres, so if he’s the one to beat, why can’t we be close?”

Stokes taking confidence into Golden Slipper

Phillip Stokes feels that a 'high-pressure' Golden Slipper (Gr 1, 1200m) would be ideal for Stretan Ruler following on from the Wild Ruler (Snitzel) colt's second placing in Saturday's Todman Stakes behind current Slipper favourite Paradoxium (Extreme Choice). Stokes feels last weekend's Group 2 was not run to suit his juvenile, and that a harder pace in the Slipper would be the golden ticket. “It wasn’t run to suit, slow tempo, I thought he was good late,” Stokes told Racing.com. “He just got tugging a little bit when they backed the tempo off, but this will bring him on for two weeks’ time. I’m really happy with him, a high-pressure Slipper will suit. He said he wouldn’t be swapping him for anything. He feels a high-pressure race will suit him, and I thought he acquitted himself well. I think he’s on track.”

Arapaho to have light autumn campaign

Arapaho (Credit: Racing Photos)

Sydney Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) winner Arapaho (Lope De Vega) is set to have a light autumn after suffering an early setback. The Bjorn Baker-trained nine-year-old had a foot abscess that delayed his reappearance, but stepped out for his first barrier trial at Randwick on Thursday. "He looks as fresh and well as ever," the gelding's regular rider Rachel King said. "He's pulling his way around like a two-year-old every day. He's like Peter Pan, he doesn't get older." Arapaho was last seen running midfield in the Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) in November and King is hoping the gelding can make his mark during the Queensland Winter Carnival. "He might miss some of these main races at carnival time, but we've got Brisbane as well. There is no rush," she said. "He might end up being more at the back end of the carnival here, and then Brisbane."

Elle Sourit impresses in Pearl Series Final

Elle Sourit (Credit: Race Images)

In a thrilling conclusion to New Zealand’s richest raceday, Champions Day at Ellerslie, promising mare Elle Sourit (Ocean Park) retained her unbeaten record as she powered home to take out the Entain/NZB Insurance Pearl Series Final (1400m). Racing during the day had been of the highest calibre and the last race on the card didn’t disappoint, with the Andrew Forsman-prepared daughter of Ocean Park (Thorn Park) coming from well back with an undeniable run that took her to her fourth win from four starts. Given a long break by Forsman following a win at Te Rapa last August, the four-year-old was at peak for her first-up performance in a race that Forsman had targeted a long way out. Apprentice Sam McNab only had the one ride on the day and did it plenty of justice as the four-year-old mare came home 0.8 lengths ahead of Transaction (Ocean Park). Forsman has high ambitions for his mare, who has plenty of opportunities ahead of her. “We set her for this race a little way out and the owners have been so patient as she had a setback during her last preparation, so we had to stop then bring her back up slowly for this,” he said. “I’m thankful they allowed us to do that and Sam rode her a treat as she is a genuine good horse, who is unbeaten and only going to get better. She doesn’t need a heap of racing this preparation, she’ll get to a mile fairly quickly and is going to make a good 2000-metre horse. There’s plenty of black type racing for her and she’ll be a black type performer pretty quickly.”

Confesara scores sentimental win on Champions Day

This year’s Champions Day was one to remember for Kingsclere Stables. The Cambridge barn scored the quinella in the New Zealand Derby (Gr 1, 2400m), won the King’s Plate (Gr 3, 1200m) with Sweynesday (Sweynesse), and, earlier in the day, picked up a sentimental victory for stable owners Ali and Graeme Andrews. Ali’s father recently passed away, and jockey George Rooke donned a black armband to pay respect when jumping aboard Confesara (Toronado) ahead of the Windsor Park Stud 3YO Trophy (1500m) and the pair got the perfect result. They travelled midfield with cover before tracking Rock Ice (Ancient Spirit) into the race around the final bend. Rooke found a gap inside the Shaun and Emma Clotworthy-trained runner and Confesara shot through it and chased down the leaders to pip Burnerphone (Microphone) at the post to win by 0.2 lengths. “I thought that was a serious win because they went hard early and just really pulled up and I thought it was going to be really hard to make up ground, but she knuckled down and fair credit to her,” said Robert Wellwood, who trains the filly in partnership with Roger James. “Ali, who owns the horse, her father passed away, so it is massive to have the black armband on to remember him, and they will be able to remember this as a good day forever.”

Geneva gives Hoskin Group 1 placing

Geneva (Credit: Race Images)

Kylie Hoskin has had a frustrating season with her promising three-year-old Geneva (Time Test) but he made it all worthwhile when running third in the New Zealand Derby at Ellerslie on Champions Day. “I am absolutely rapt, it was awesome,” Hoskin said. “That was my first runner in a Group 1 so to get the third placing, I was over the moon.” However, the race wasn’t without its frustrations, with race winner Road To Paris (Circus Maximus) shifting inwards in the concluding stages, causing interference with placegetters Autumn Glory (Ocean Park) and Geneva, and while jockey George Rooke was suspended for 12 meetings and imposed a $10,000 fine, the placings stood. “There was obviously that bit of interference in the straight when he was coming up to them, which was unfortunate, but I’m still really happy he was able to switch ground, pick up again and keep trying,” Hoskin said. “Ben [Thompson, jockey] rode him a treat, he got him into a really nice position and got him travelling nicely. He said he was still quite strong – because it has been a problem with him not settling – but I thought Ben did a great job with him.” Geneva, bred and raced by Jomara Bloodstock, won his only start as a juvenile but has taken his connections on a frustrating ride as a three-year-old, winning just one and placing in another of his previous nine starts this season. “He has been really frustrating,” Hoskin said. “If it’s not a weather event it’s a bad draw or ride, nothing seems to go his way. At times he hasn’t helped himself either, but the ability is there, he’s just got to put it all together.”

19 for Kitasan Black

Basse Terre (3 c ex Mambia by Aldebaran) became the 19th individual stakes winner for Shadai Stallion Station’s Kitasan Black (Black Tide) when landing Sunday’s Yayoi Sho (Gr 2, 2000m) at Nakayama. Ridden by Yuga Kawada for trainer Takashi Saito, the three-year-old colt defeated Reichsadler (Siskin) by three-quarters of a length, with a further neck back to Admire Quads (Real Steel) in third. Out of the French Group 3-winning mare Mambia (Aldebaran), Basse Terre is a brother to winner Mikki Harmony and a half-brother to multiple other winners. Kitasan Black is standing the 2026 northern hemisphere breeding season at a fee of ¥25,000,000 (approx. AU$225,260).

Ten for Justify

British Isles (5 g ex Purely Hot by Pure Prize) became the tenth individual elite-level winner and 58th individual stakes winner for Coolmore’s former shuttle stallion Justify (Scat Daddy) when landing Saturday’s Santa Anita Handicap (Gr 1, 10f) at Santa Anita. Ridden by Diego Herrera for trainer Richard Baltas, the five-year-old gelding ran out a four and a half length-winner over Vodka Vodka (Stay Thirsty) with a further length and a quarter back to Getaway Car (Curlin) in third. Out of the Grade 3-winning Pure Prize (Storm Cat) mare Purely Hot, British Isles is a half-brother to Grade 1 winner and now Rancho San Miguel stallion Eight Rings (Empire Maker). Justify is standing the 2026 northern hemisphere breeding season at Ashford Stud in Kentucky for a fee of US$200,000 (approx. AU$284,170).

US: Splendora dominant in Beholder Mile

Classy mare Splendora (5 m Audible - Miss Freeze by Frost Giant) chalked up her second career Grade 1 when cruising to victory in Saturday’s Beholder Mile Stakes (Gr 1, 8f) at Santa Anita. Ridden by Juan Hernandez for trainer Bob Baffert, the five-year-old daughter of Audible (Into Mischief) easily defeated Bless The Broken (Laoban) by five and three-quarter lengths. There was a further seven lengths back to Om N Joy (Om) in third.

Andrea Atzeni stars with Sha Tin quartet

Andrea Atzeni (Credit: HKJC)

Andrea Atzeni’s surge up the Hong Kong jockeys’ championship gained further impetus at Sha Tin on Sunday when the Italian produced a career-best quartet in Hong Kong, while Fast Network (Wrote) claimed the day’s feature to underline Ka Ying Rising’s (Shamexpress) supreme quality.

Atzeni triumphed on He Was Me (Needs Further) (119lb) for Tony Cruz in the Class 5 Somerset Handicap (1400m), Manfred Man’s Juicy Dragon (Territories) (117lb) in the first section of the Class 4 Rutland Handicap (1200m), David Hall’s Good Chap (Deep Field) (125lb) in the second section of the Class 4 Rutland Handicap (1200m) and John Size’s Endued (Deep Field) (122lb) in the Class 3 Kowloon Tong Club Trophy Handicap (1600m) to move to 35 wins for the campaign.

Only eight-time champion jockey Zac Purton (84) and Hugh Bowman (39) have ridden more winners this season than Atzeni, who also recorded a second and two thirds from 11 rides this afternoon to underscore his impressive consistency.

“I had good rides but, as you know, it doesn’t always work out. I’ve had a good day. The two horses on the All Weather track had great chances. Tony’s had a chance too and the only question with Endued was the draw [barrier 14].

“I’m picking nice rides and the support is coming. You know what it’s like here – you can never look back; you have to keep looking forward.”

Endued, who is nominated for the HK$26 million BMW Hong Kong Derby (Listed, 2000m) on March 22, earned a PP Bonus of HK$1.5 million with a brave performance after crossing the field from the outside barrier to take the lead and hang on by a head from Smart Avenue (Shamus Award) (124lb).

Fast Network (135lb) was rewarded for a pair of minor placings behind superstar sprinter Ka Ying Rising with deserved success in the HK$3.72 million Class 1 Essex Handicap (1200m) for Dennis Yip and Zac Purton.

Third behind Ka Ying Rising in both December’s Hong Kong Sprint (Gr 1, 1200m) and the Centenary Sprint Cup (Gr 1, 1200m) on January 25, Fast Network settled fifth on the fence before Purton coolly weaved a winning passage to down Sky Trust (So You Think) (114lb) and Invincible Shield (I Am Invincible) (121lb) in 1m 08.28s.

“It was a really nice win, he’s been consistent all season and he was in a race today where he drew barrier one and there was a bit of speed, so there were some things to help him but it’s always really difficult to carry top weight in these races against some nice young horses,” Purton said.

“He still had to turn up but he did it in pretty soft fashion.”

Yip said: “Everybody knows that Ka Ying Rising is too strong, everywhere in the world, but my horse is really consistent. I think this race, my horse was only 80 per cent.”

Tony Cruz will target the HK$4.2 million Premier Plate Handicap (Gr 3, 1800m) in June with Stunning Peach (Wootton Bassett) (125lb) after the Irish import continued an impressive form resurgence with success in the HK$3.12 million Class 2 Devon Handicap (1800m) under Angus Chung.

“I believe this horse is potentially a Group horse; I believe he can win a Group 3,” Cruz said. “Today, Angus rode a perfect race. There’s a handicap race coming up over 1800 metres again – 100-rating down – and I’m going to run in those kinds of races.

“The race I’m aiming at is at the end of the season, the Premier Plate. Let’s see what he does then.”

Cruz later sealed a treble when Winning Ovation (Cotai Glory) (131lb) – who returned this afternoon following 308 days between runs – sauntered to a comfortable win in the Class 3 Cumberland Handicap (1400m) under Alexis Badel.

Frankie Lor’s blazing March form continued with Run Run Sunrise’s (Capitalist) (127lb) success in the Class 4 Suffolk Handicap (1000m) under Derek Leung. Clocking 56.87s, the Capitalist (Written Tycoon) gelding provided Lor with his ninth victory of the month.

“We put the ear plugs and the tongue tie on him, and he looked much better – quieter and more relaxed,” Lor said. “In the morning, he’s quite nervous and very strong in the cantering, the gear change has really helped with that.”

Francis Lui’s The Golden Knight (Impending) (130lb) claimed the Class 4 Norfolk Handicap (1600m) from Master Trillion (Mendelssohn) (135lb) on protest after jockey James Orman and trainer Francis Lui lodged an objection, with their horse losing momentum when going for a run near the 300 metres before failing by a head to catch Master Trillion.

Orman sealed a brace when the David Hall-trained Magnifique (Charm Spirit) (132lb) swept to victory in the Class 3 Cornwall Handicap (1200m) – registering his fifth win from only seven starts.

“He’s a nice horse, any horse who can win five races in seven starts is pretty good and I’m pretty sure he should have won last start as well after a wide run,” Orman said of Magnifique.

“With [the successful objection] with The Golden Knight, it’s not the way you want to win but I believe he should have won and you have to do the right things by connections.”

Yee Cheong Glory (Puissance De Lune) (134lb) slotted his second course and distance win for Jamie Richards when Hugh Bowman delivered the grey with precision to clinch the Class 4 Kent Handicap (1200m).

“Yee Cheong Glory has been racing well. His last run, I thought, was really good and he had the sweet draw in barrier two and the pace was good,” Bowman said.

“He enjoyed being held up, actually. I was held up and disappointed for room at a vital stage, but we didn’t panic and the horse was full of running and it provided him with a good opportunity to show what he was capable of and he didn’t let us down.”

Hong Kong racing continues at Happy Valley on Wednesday, March 11.
