Leading Queensland nursery Eureka Stud will present the largest draft at this week’s Magic Millions Gold Coast March Yearling Sale, offering 36 yearlings across the two days of selling on March 12 and 13.

The Cambooya operation topped last year’s vendor table when selling 26 yearlings for a combined $1,129,500 and appears well placed to again play a major role at the sale.

This year’s renewed edition of the March Yearling Sale has expanded significantly, with a catalogue of 508 yearlings, up from 380 in 2025, while the inclusion of non-QTIS yearlings has added further depth and variety to the offering.

What's On

Eureka’s resident sire Spirit Of Boom (Sequalo) was the dominant stallion at the sale last year, finishing as leading sire by both gross and average. Nineteen yearlings by the Queensland champion sold for an average of $75,789 and a gross of $1,440,000.

The highest-priced of those, a $210,000 colt purchased from the Kenmore Lodge draft by Clinton Taylor and Bacon Racing, has since been named Spirit Bomb and is awaiting his first start in the Michael Freedman stable.

“Hopefully he can maintain his place on top of the mantlepiece,” Eureka Stud’s Harry McAlpine told ANZ News.

“We sell a lot of Spirit Of Booms here every year. It's been a great sale for graduates coming out of here, like Prince of Boom, Keshi Boom, Boomsara, Boomnova, Chinny Boom the list goes on and on, plenty of good Spirit of Booms come out of this sale and they haven't cost the world.”

Spirit Of Boom again features prominently in this year’s draft, with Eureka offering ten yearlings by their flagship sire.

Among them is Lot 4, a filly out of dual winner Weekend Saga (Real Saga), herself a half-sister to MVRC Champagne Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) winner Dan Baroness (Statue Of Liberty) and Dalrello Stakes (Listed, 1000m) winner Jagged Edge (Better Than Ready).

Weekend Saga has produced two foals to race, including two-time winner What A Weekend (Better Than Ready) and lightly raced metropolitan placegetter Weekend Spirit (Spirit Of Boom).

“She's a really nice physical type of filly. She is out of a Real Saga mare, which has worked with Spirit Of Boom before - Boom Talk won a $1 million, he is out of a Real Saga mare too, so the cross works really well with the double Semipalatinsk. She's a real physical highlight of the draft.”

Lot 257 is another by Spirit Of Boom, a colt out of four-time winner Lucky Toss (Dash For Cash), a half-sister to Group 2 winner and Group 1 placegetter Scenic Warrior (Brave Warrior), and 12-time winner Stanzaic (Raise A Stanza), who collected three victories at Listed level.

Lucky Toss has produced five foals to race, all winners, including Champagne Boom (Spirit Of Boom), winner of Caulfield’s Debutant Stakes (Listed, 1000m), and Listed-placed Stoli Bolli (Deep Field). The colt is also closely related to recent Magic Millions SA 2YO Classic (1100m) winner Rich On Bubbles (Capitalist).

“It's a good old Eureka family, and they keep doing the job,” McAlpine said. “The Magic Millions Adelaide winner on Saturday is out of a full-sister to him. So it's a family that is very precocious and has worked well with Spirit of Boom, again that double Semipalatinsk cross.”

Lot 150 is a flashy bay filly by Spirit Of Boom out of Queensland Guineas (Gr 2, 1600m) winner Express Air (Piccolo), making her a sister to nine-time winner and Listed scorer Simply Fly and recent Doomben two-year-old winner Esperanza.

Esperanza, who is owned by Eureka Stud, will line up in Saturday’s $500,000 QTIS Jewel (1200m) at the Gold Coast.

“She's a full sister to Esperanza, who will be almost favourite for the QTIS Jewel on the weekend. It is a great Eureka family, she is a full-sister to Simply Fly who won the QTIS three-year-old Jewel. That great old family of ours, has had Prince Of Boom and Keshi Boom, and all the rest of them. She is very good.”

Lot 87 offers buyers an opportunity to secure a colt by popular first-season sire Artorius (Flying Artie) out of three-time winner and twice stakes-placed mare Campari (O’Reilly).

McAlpine purchased the mare carrying the colt for $30,000 at the 2024 Inglis Sydney Broodmare Sale. She has already produced one runner in the talented filly Tigroni (Tiger Of Malay).

Though still a maiden, Tigroni made an encouraging start to her career when finishing second behind subsequent Inglis Millennium (RL, 1100m) winner Fireball (Snitzel) on debut at Rosehill. She subsequently placed at Randwick and finished third in the Gold Coast Gold Pearl (1100m).

While she finished ninth in the Magic Millions 2YO Classic (RL, 1200m), Tigroni has been a strong performer for her connections, an all-female ownership group, earning $420,034 in prize-money.

“She was a mare we bought in foal to Artorius. Obviously, he was a great racehorse, a great two-year-old. This colt has actually done really amazingly in the preparation, he just needed a bit more time from January to now, but he's really furnished into a really powerful, good moving horse. He's a real credit to the stallion, I'd say. Obviously, the mare had a lot of ability as well, so we are really pleased with him.”

Eureka will also present a unique offering in the form of a colt by Toronado (High Chaparral), catalogued as Lot 495 but set to sell after Lot 250 on Thursday.

The colt is the first foal of the well-related three-time winner Desert Team (Invincible Spirit), whom McAlpine purchased for 55,000gns at the 2022 Tattersalls December Mare Sale. She is out of Group 3 winner Kilmah (Sepoy) and hails from the family of stakes winner Perfect Star (Act One).

He is the only yearling in the catalogue by the champion Victorian sire, who has enjoyed another productive season with 120 winners, including last Saturday’s VRC Sires’ Produce Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) winner Grinzinger Heart.

Toronado has also continued to make a strong impact in Hong Kong through performers such as Stormy Grove, Little Paradise and Victor The Winner.

“He's a really nice horse. He's bred on the same cross as Masked Crusader, being out of a Invincible Spirit mare. Very sharp, attractive colt and looks like he'll get up and get going early. I brought the mare out from Tattersalls and she’s a Newmarket-winning mare, so it's been a bit of an experiment, and hopefully she can leave her footprint in the breeding world.”

McAlpine said the farm had experienced strong inspection traffic throughout the week and welcomed the revamped structure of the sale.

“We're looking forward to the first edition of the sale open to interstate horses. The change of the time of the week has certainly made it a bit interesting to gauge numbers, because normally we were parading on a weekend into the sale.

“The first day of parading has probably been busier than normal. So we'll know our fate tomorrow when most people turn up and buzz through their lists on the day before. Hopefully that will be the case. Obviously, a few more horses, but the quality has increased as well, so I hope that's enough to entice a few more interstaters to get involved.”

Generosity confirmed for Inglis Chairman's Sale

Generosity (Credit: Inglis)

Millionaire mare Generosity (Divine Prophet) will be offered at the Inglis Chairman’s Sale on May 7 after adding further black type to her record with victory in Saturday’s Challenge Stakes (Gr 2, 1000m) at Randwick.

At her fourth start for Chris Waller, the mare produced a sharp performance at weight-for-age, defeating a high-class field which included Group 1 winners Marhoona (Snitzel), Mazu (Maurice), Giga Kick (Scissor Kick) and Skybird (Exosphere). She also became only the third mare to claim the race in the past decade, joining English (Encosta De Lago) and Passive Aggressive (Fastnet Rock).

Generosity had already shown her quality earlier in the spring when finishing third in the Shorts (Gr 2, 1100m) behind Joliestar (Zoustar) and Briasa (Smart Missile).

A granddaughter of top-class sprinting mare Bel Mer (Bel Esprit), Generosity began her career under Simon Miller, establishing herself with a Listed victory over 1400 metres and a strong third in the $4 million The Quokka (1200m), where she finished ahead of multiple Group 1 winner Overpass (Vancouver).

The mare is now expected to press on to the Galaxy (Gr 1, 1100m) at Rosehill on March 21, for which she sits as $7 joint second favourite.

“Generosity is a quality type with a lovely attitude and a fantastic horse to train,” Waller said. “She has excellent natural speed and as her record shows, she is very versatile. With more racing still to come, she presents as a very exciting prospect over the next 12 months.”

Inglis bloodstock sales manager Harry Bailey said the mare would be a major attraction in this year’s Chairman’s catalogue.

“She’s a very pretty mare and exceptionally quick,” Bailey said. “She will be hard to beat in the Galaxy and there’s a fantastic program of races for her after that, including the TJ Smith and a series of Group 1 sprints in Brisbane. Mares like this don’t come on the market very often and she makes enormous appeal as both a race filly and breeding prospect.”

The Chairman’s Sale, staged at Riverside Stables, enjoyed a further profile boost with a series of big race results over the weekend.

“The dams of Group 1 Newmarket winner Caballus, Group 2 Reisling winner Chayan and Group 3 winner Pinito were all sourced at Chairman’s, while Group 2 Todman winner Paradoxium was sold in utero through the sale,” Bailey said.

Each of the past two Golden Slipper (Gr 1, 1200m)-winning colts, Stay Inside (Extreme Choice) and Shinzo (Snitzel), were also sold in utero at the sale.

Enxuto chases Doncaster berth in Apex

Enxuto (Credit: Racing Photos)

Cranbourne-based trainer Robbie Griffiths will give the Group 2-placed Enxuto (Lean Mean Machine) a chance to secure a start in the Doncaster Mile (Gr 1, 1600m) when he lines up in Saturday’s Ajax Stakes (Gr 2, 1500m) at Rosehill. The Ajax offers the winner ballot-free exemption into the Doncaster, a race in which Enxuto sits 77th in the order of entry with 50 kilograms. Griffiths, whose sole Group 1 success came with The Quarterback (Street Boss) in the 2016 Newmarket Handicap (Gr 1, 1200m), said the five-year-old had earned his opportunity to press his claims. “I’d prefer to take Enxuto to the Ajax in Sydney and that gives him two weeks into the Doncaster,” the trainer said. “He’s in the mix. He ran fourth in the Ingham up there and his form around Sabaj should read well.” Enxuto has placed in both runs this preparation, finishing third behind Cafe Millenium (Not A Single Doubt) and Sabaj (Manhattan Rain) in the Elms Handicap (Listed, 1400m) before chasing home Birdman (Free Eagle) in the Blamey Stakes (Gr 2, 1600m) second-up. Sabaj subsequently boosted the Elms form with a career-best fourth in the All-Star Mile (Gr 1, 1600m). Griffiths believes Enxuto is ready to peak in the Ajax, where he will carry the minimum weight of 54 kilograms. “He worked really well Saturday morning,” the trainer said. “I thought, it’s hard to run really well two weeks off a blistering first-up run, so I reckon his run will be better coming into this.” Enxuto has firmed into $8.50 (from $11) in all-in betting for the Ajax, with Lord Penman (Contributer) ($2.60) and Globe (Charm Spirit) ($3.50) heading the market.

Maher calls on Spencer for Light Infantry Man

Ciaron Maher is hopeful that British-based jockey Jamie Spencer can reunite with Light Infantry Man (Fast Company) when the gelding lines up in Saturday’s Peter Young Stakes (Gr 2, 1800m) at Caulfield. Maher has reached out to Spencer about the possibility of travelling to Melbourne to partner the Group 1-winning gelding, with regular rider Ethan Brown and Mark Zahra both suspended. Spencer rode Light Infantry Man extensively during his early career in the UK and also travelled to Australia to partner him in the Golden Eagle (1500m) at Rosehill in 2022. “I’ve been talking to Jamie Spencer,” Maher said. “Ethan Brown’s suspended, Mark Zahra’s suspended, so we’re just seeing if Jamie might be available. He knows the horse quite well. He rode him in the Golden Eagle and in plenty of Group 1 races in Europe, so it would be great if it worked out, but we still need to confirm it.”
Light Infantry Man has been ridden by a number of jockeys since settling in Australia, with Jason Collett, Craig Williams, Blake Shinn, James McDonald, Chad Schofield, John Allen and Zac Purton all having partnered the seven-year-old. Brown and McDonald are the only Australia-based riders to have won aboard him, with Brown in the saddle for both of his elite-level victories, including last year’s Australian Cup (Gr 1, 2000m) at Flemington. Maher said the horse had come through his recent first-up win in the MRC Foundation Cup (Gr 3, 1600m) under Brown in good order. “He’s quirky and Ethan obviously gets on very well with him,” the trainer said. “But he’s come through the run in great order and Saturday looks a nice race for him at weight-for-age over 1800 metres.”

Browne hunts Showdown repeat with another humble buy

Co-trainer Emma-Lee Browne is hopeful lightning can strike twice in Saturday’s VOBIS Platinum Showdown (1200m) for two-year-olds at Caulfield. Browne and husband David Browne landed the $1 million feature last year with bargain buy McGaw (I Am Immortal) – a $14,000 Inglis Premier purchase who delivered connections the race’s $571,000 first prize. The Pakenham stable is aiming to repeat with another inexpensive I Am Immortal (I Am Invincible) yearling in the shape of $10,000 Premier purchase Lomu, who is set to make his raceday debut in the contest. Browne told Racing.com that the colt pleased her with his work at Caulfield on Tuesday. “I thought his work was really, really good,” she said. “He was very professional. It’s a bit of a throw at stumps, but he’s trialled well and, at this time of year, you’re always running into horses that have already won races.” The colt shares ownership with several of McGaw’s connections and, like his predecessor, was sourced from Stonehouse Thoroughbreds. McGaw himself is being aimed at upcoming VOBIS Gold races, having returned with a midfield effort in the VOBIS Gold Comet (1000m) at Flemington last month. Browne said the stable had since discovered the colt had been under the weather. “We were disappointed with the run, but he came back and had a bad blood test so he’d had a bit of a virus,” she said. “We’ve treated him and he worked here today and looked much better.” McGaw holds entries for both the VOBIS Gold Rush (1200m) and VOBIS Gold Sprint (1200m).

Veight out to capitalise on class drop

The Tony and Calvin McEvoy stable is hoping a drop in grade can spark a return to form for Veight (Grunt) when the Group 1 winner lines up in Saturday’s VOBIS Gold So Si Bon (1400m) at Caulfield. The five-year-old has not tasted victory since claiming the George Ryder Stakes (Gr 1, 1500m) at Rosehill almost two years ago, having contested stakes company throughout much of his career. He heads into Saturday’s race after finishing last of eight runners in the Futurity Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) at Caulfield on February 21, a performance that left connections searching for answers after he had finished second in the Australia Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) at Pakenham and third in the Kevin Heffernan Stakes (Gr 3, 1400m) at Caulfield in his first two runs this prep. “We went over him thoroughly and he has no issues at all,” Calvin McEvoy told Racing.com. “The first two runs were good, but he had a tough run last time and put the white flag up early, which was disappointing. We sent him back to Ballarat for a change of scenery and he’s down in grade on Saturday, so we’ll be looking for him to perform.” The son of Grunt (O’Reilly) endured a difficult run of setbacks after the 2024 spring, including a bout of pneumonia following a gelding operation. He managed just one start in 2025 when finishing last in last May’s Doomben 10,000 (Gr 1, 1200m) before a neck injury prevented a spring campaign. Given 61 kilograms for Saturday’s race, Veight will benefit from Jackson Radley’s 3-kilo claim, reducing his weight to 58 kilograms.

Newmarket winner to launch Quokka bid

Caballus (Credit: Racing Photos)

Newmarket Handicap winner Caballus (I Am Invincible) is set to head west to contest the $5 million The Quokka at Ascot on April 18. The Bjorn Baker-trained and Darby Racing-owned five-year-old will represent RAM Racing, who has enjoyed success in the event previously with Callabus’s stablemate Overpass in 2023 and 2024 for the same connections. Baker said the race shapes as a suitable target following Caballus’s impressive Flemington win. “It’s a great money race, no doubt about it, and it’s been a very special race for me and Darby,” the trainer said. “RAM Racing have been great supporters and that’s how it came about initially. It’s a good space between runs and I think he’s going as good as ever.” Caballus produced a front-running performance to claim the Newmarket, with Craig Newitt taking the ride after Hugh Bowman was unable to make the allocated 55 kilograms. Baker suggested the gelding may not necessarily lead again in Perth. “I think he’s probably better with a bit of cover if he can sit off one,” he said. “You can overanalyse barriers. Gate one ended up being a good place to be and Froggy Newitt took it up and made it hard for everyone else.” Although Caballus is yet to race at Ascot, Baker is confident the track will suit. “I think he’ll go great left-handed,” he said. Originally trained by Chris Waller, Caballus was purchased by Darby Bloodstock for $300,000 via the Inglis October (Early) Online Sale in 2023 and has since won six races and more than $2 million in prize-money.

Homebred Yes Yes Yes juvenile breaks through at Ballarat

Promising Yes Yes Yes (Rubick) juvenile Harry Met Sally continued the recent run of winners for his Gooree Stud-based sire with a dominant maiden victory at Ballarat on Tuesday. The Mark Walker-trained gelding finished fourth behind Gin Twist (Home Affairs) in the VRC TAB We’re On 2YO Stakes (Listed, 1100m) at Flemington last month and was dropped back to maiden company for Tuesday’s 1200-metre contest. Ridden by Lachlan Neindorf, Brae Sokolski’s YES Bloodstock homebred proved far too strong for favourite King’s Address (Toronado), surging clear late to score by 1.8 lengths at his fourth start. “It was a good ride by Lachy Neindorf to give the horse time to settle and he had plenty to offer when presented in the straight,” said Walker. “Since we’ve gelded him, his form has been really good. It’s great to get a win for Brae Sokolski and his team of owners. It was a good call by our assistant trainer Ben Gleeson to line him up in this race; he was confident the horse had done well since racing a fortnight ago.” Gleeson suggested the gelding has the scope to progress through the grades. “I'm sure as a gelding, he's going to really come on in the next six months,” he said. “I think he can go through the grades and eventually end up a stakes horse.” Harry Met Sally is the seventh winner from seven runners out of the Group 3-placed mare Agueda (General Nediym). Yes Yes Yes has produced over 40 winners this season, including metropolitan performers Maybe Moet, Yoyo Yeezy, The Wheelbarrow, Yes Yoshi, Let’s Go Barbie and Mrs Goldberg.

O’Brien’s gelding lands Up and Coming Stars heat

Danny O’Brien’s gelding Manifest The Milli (Puissance De Lune) broke through to win the second heat of the Up and Coming Stars Series at Ballarat on Tuesday, defeating long-time maiden Unriddle (Encryption) to claim the $41,250 winner’s prize. Contesting the 1200-metre maiden worth $75,000, restricted to four-year-olds and upwards, the eight-start maiden was resuming from a spell and started the $3.90 favourite. The Rory Hunter-trained Unriddle, who has now placed 11 times in 23 starts for his current stable, loomed as the likely winner when taking the lead in the straight but was run down late as Manifest The Milli built through his gears to score comfortably by a length under Jordan Childs. “He’d been jumping out well leading into today so we were confident he’d run a good race,” Childs told Racing.com. “I just wanted to ride him where he was comfortable. This is probably a bit short of his best trip, but once he got clear he really started to attack the line.”

Slipper hope Closer To Free readies with Rosehill trial win

Tuesday’s juvenile trials at Rosehill saw a couple of Golden Slipper contenders step out at the home of the $5 million feature. Blue Diamond Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) runner-up Closer To Free (Street Boss) was the first of them, and cruised along from the front under Jamie Melham to win his 1030-metre heat by 1.4 lengths over Chris Waller’s Inglis Millennium (RL, 1100m) winner Fireball (Snitzel), who was sporting first-time blinkers. Winner of the Blue Diamond Prelude (C\&G) (Gr 3, 1100m) on debut, Closer To Free will need to be supplemented for the Slipper with a late entry fee. Meanwhile, Fireball’s stablemate and Skyline Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) winner Campione D’Italia (Snitzel) was given a quiet trial over 900 metres, working home to finish fourth behind Moscow Maid (Russian Revolution), who led all the way to win by 2.7 lengths over Lafite (Zoustar) – a brother to Group 1 winner Schwarz. Later in the morning, Silver Slipper (Gr 2, 1100m) fifth Shiki (Too Darn Hot) contested the 900-metre heat which was won by the Waller-trained Wootton Bassett (Iffraaj) colt Vatican. The Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott-trained filly settled well with cover under Rachel King before surging to the line for second, while Vatican – fifth in the Inglis Nursery (RL, 1000m) at his only start – raced through on the inside to win by 1.2 lengths.

Champion mare Legarto retired

Legarto (Credit: Kenton Wright (Race Images))

Five-time Group 1 winner Legarto (Proisir) has been retired, her principal owners Philip and Catherine Brown have confirmed

When the six-year-old won Saturday’s Bonecrusher New Zealand Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m) it was accepted that was her final race in her native country, but the possibility remained that she would have one further start in the Australian Cup (Gr 1, 2000m) at Flemington on March 28.

However, following discussions between Legarto’s ownership group, which includes trainers Ken and Bev Kelso, the decision has been made to bring down the curtain on her career.

“Bev and I would have loved the opportunity to give her one last race on the same track that she won the [2023] Australian Guineas, but we accept the majority decision to retire her now,” Ken Kelso said.

“She’s been a wonderful mare – a horse of lifetime as I stated again on Saturday – and we’re comfortable with her being retired at the top of her game.

“Winning the Herbie Dyke and Bonecrusher Stakes at her last two starts, especially when a lot of people had written her off, that has been immensely satisfying for all of us.”

The winner of 12 of her 24 starts and more than $2.8 million in prize-money, Legarto will now be let down and prepared for the Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale at the Gold Coast in May.

Harrison mulling next move with Moxie

Moxie (Strasbourg) gave Ken Harrison his biggest thrill in racing at Ellerslie last Saturday when recording his first stakes win in the Dubai Classic (Gr 2, 1400m), and the trainer and part-owner is eager for more. “We’re over the moon, it was a great result,” Harrison said.
“She has come through it great. We may give her one more start before she goes for a bit of a break until next season. I am mulling it over at the moment.” Harrison is weighing up between the New Zealand Thoroughbred Breeders’ Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) at Trentham on March 28 and the Easter Handicap (Gr 3, 1600m) at Ellerslie next month. While eager to test his mare at elite-level, the location of each race is a key factor for Harrison. “She likes Ellerslie and there is one more back there, the Easter Handicap, but we have just got a few things to weigh up and sort out,” he said. “She has never been away from home yet and she knows Ellerslie.” Weight is another factor that has entered calculations, with Moxie’s rating increasing to 96 following her Group 2 win. “We have gone up 18 rating points, but we have just got to take that on the chin. That is where she is now so that is what we have got to race against,” Harrison said. “The Group 1 [Breeders’ Stakes] is weight-for-age, so we know what weight she is going to get there.”

HK: China Win seeks late Derby berth at Happy Valley

David Hayes hopes China Win (Super Seth) can warrant last-minute selection for the Hong Kong Derby (Listed, 2000m) when he contests Wednesday night’s Class 3 Lyttelton Handicap (1800m) under Zac Purton. Rated 67, China Win is aiming to emulate Beauty Alliance (Starcraft), who last season secured the final Hong Kong Derby spot with victory in this race at Happy Valley, earning a 12-point rating rise (65 to 77) and his place in the contest, which is finalised by the selection panel, who will determine the 14-runner field later this week. Hayes said: “I think if he was lucky enough to win, then he’d be in the calculations to get the last spot. The horse has a good gate [three], and his trackwork and trials have been excellent. He’s had a bit of time between runs because he was scratched due to a heart anomaly, which was rectified straight away, so that put us a bit behind the eight ball, but he’s in good form for this race.” The Hong Kong Derby takes place at Sha Tin on March 22, and China Win has emerged as an unlikely candidate. The gelding took seven starts to break through, but has shown that stamina is his best asset by winning his most recent two outings over 1800 metres. “His win before last was probably more eye-catching with Zac on when he came from last and barrier 14, and even the start before that he was only beaten an inch, so he’s in really good form,” Hayes said.

HK: Yuen ready to take on the ‘biggest stage’ after overseas spell

Nichola Yuen became the latest product of The Hong Kong Jockey Club’s Apprentice Jockeys’ School to join the city’s riding ranks full-time on Tuesday morning as she participated in Sha Tin barrier trials before being officially unveiled as a licensed jockey. As she prepares to compete against some of the world’s leading jockeys at Sha Tin, the 25-year-old immediately set her sights on racing in the jurisdiction’s biggest races. “Amazing, unbelievable,” was how Yuen described receiving the call to return home. “I’m really excited for the future. To ride more winners on this, the biggest stage in the world, it’s really exciting. Hopefully, I can ride in many big races here.” Yuen has served her apprenticeship overseas to date, riding 61 winners in Australia beginning in 2021 before moving on to New Zealand, where she rode ten winners and, most recently, South Africa, where she grabbed seven wins. “I got four wins in a day in Australia, and two for my boss as well, so that was a pretty good highlight,” recalled Yuen when asked about her fondest memories of riding abroad.

Bold Bonita set to boss her rivals again

By Paul Symes

ANZ News

Bossy Bonita (Credit: Getty Images)

Having come perilously close to suffering a career-threatening injury in a trackwork mishap some six months ago, Bossy Benita (So You Think) would now appear to have a new lease on life and the stakes-winning mare will aim to extend her imperious recent form at Caulfield this Saturday.

The last-start Mannerism Stakes (Gr. 2, 1400m) heroine will be one of the headline acts at the 12th annual Victorian Owners and Breeders Raceday, but she is fortunate to be racing at all after dumping her trackwork rider and repeatedly crashing through the running rails in a state of sheer panic during an otherwise routine morning at Mornington racecourse last spring.

Mercifully, Bossy Benita escaped from the frightful incident with only some minor abrasions to show for it, but Michael Mehegan nonetheless regrets subsequently running her in the Let’s Elope Stakes (Gr. 2, 1400m), which resulted in one of only four unplaced runs in her 14-start career. However, it is perhaps the only mis-step the emerging trainer has made with the daughter of the late, great So You Think (High Chaparral) since acquiring her for $85,000 at the Inglis Melbourne Premier Yearling Sale three years ago.

Her all-the-way waltz in the Mannerism extended the mare’s record at Caulfield to two wins and a pair of placings from five starts, so whether she lines up in the new VOBIS Gold So Si Bon (1400m) - named in honour of Lindsay Park’s enigmatic galloper who will be trackside to crown the inaugural winner - or Mehegan’s preferred option of the VOBIS Gold Distaff (1400m),  she is likely to jump as one of the more favoured runners.

Both are run over her pet distance of 1400 metres - three of her last four wins have come at that trip - and carry the same prize purse of $200,000 (plus an additional $50,000 in VOBIS bonuses), so the composition of the final fields and barrier draw on Wednesday morning will determine which path connections ultimately take.

Regardless of which rein he chooses to pull, however, Mehegan is firm in his belief that his stable star is in career-best form - and he is also mightily relieved that she isn’t carrying any mental scars from her near-death experience.

“It was a really scary incident, and at one point I was genuinely worried that she might kill herself,” Mehegan told ANZ News.

“Luckily she came away with only minor abrasions which we were able to treat, so that was a huge relief. Because of the form she was in we decided to press onto the Let’s Elope Stakes, but in hindsight I probably shouldn’t have run her in the race. Externally she looked absolutely fine, but maybe internally she hadn’t completely recovered from the shock of it all. She ran well below expectations that day, so we decided to give her a spell and she’s come back in great order.

“It was a special win in the Mannerism for the stable and for her owners. I actually thought she would win first-up in the Bellmaine Stakes, it’s a race we’ve had a bit of success in previously with [two-time winner] Prussian Vixen so it would’ve been nice to continue our strong record.

“With a more positive ride I think she would have won that race, we’ve worked out that she needs to be ridden forward which is exactly what Daniel [Stackhouse] did in the Mannerism. She likes being in control, so as long as we draw a good gate on Saturday we’ll be looking to go forward with her, and I think she’ll be very hard to beat again.

“We’re back at Caulfield where she’s got a great record, she’s third-up and she’s very fit, so there’s a lot in her favour and I’d be very disappointed if she’s not highly competitive. At this stage I think 1400 metres is her preferred distance, we have tried to stretch her out to the mile in the past and it hasn’t really worked, so I think she’s probably more effective over the shorter trips for now.”

Her dam Bossy Woman (Fastnet Rock) never made it to the racetrack but there is certainly plenty of speed in the family, with her granddam Tracy’s Element (Last Tycoon) - herself a freakish filly in South Africa - producing multiple Group 1-winning sprinter/miler Typhoon Tracy (Red Ransom).

With that in mind, Mehegan fully expected to be priced out of the market when Lot 306 from the Springmount Farm draft entered the Oaklands Junction auditorium back in 2023, so he was delighted when the bidding stopped well short of what he considered her true valuation.

“I was very surprised we were able to pick the filly up for $85,000,” said Mehegan, who trains ten horses from his boutique stables including Prussian Vixen’s second foal The Benchmark (Frosted), a recent heat winner of the lucrative Future Stars Series at Pakenham.

“I really liked her when I first saw her at the farm so I went back to Springmount a few more times, and she impressed me every time. I was really keen on her at the sale but I didn’t think we’d be able to afford her. I’m not sure why she wasn’t more popular, but we definitely got a bargain that day. We bought four yearlings at that sale and they’ve all won at least one race for us, but she’s obviously been the standout.

She’s got a great page, so when you combine that with her confirmation and constitution she filled every criteria

Michael Mehegan

“She’s got a great page, so when you combine that with her confirmation and constitution she filled every criteria. The depth of pedigree on her dam’s side was one of the main reasons why I didn’t think we’d be able to afford her, so I was really happy when the bidding stopped and we were able to take her home.”

On the other side of the ledger, Bossy Benita’s breeder Bryan Cousins would have been hoping to make at least six figures for the second foal produced by his mare Bossy Woman, having sold the filly’s sister - the now deceased So Bossy - for $130,000 the year before.

Cousins had been recommended Bossy Woman by his close friends Michael and Anna Flannery, who relocated ten years ago from Western Australia to Romsey in Victoria, where they operate Springmount Farm.

The hobby breeder’s admiration for the married couple’s knowledge and passion for the industry is exceeded only by his obsession with So You Think, having been trackside for two of the global trailblazer’s eight wins on Australian soil.

After enjoying some previous harness racing success, primarily as the owner of four-time Group 1 winner Innocent Eyes, Cousins’ close encounter with So You Think persuaded him to switch codes and pursue a new-found passion for thoroughbreds.

That passion would culminate in his $145,000 purchase of Bossy Woman at the Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale in 2020, when she was in foal to Coolmore’s revered stallion. His investment in a mare he had never seen before represented a fairly sizeable sum for a small-time breeder - Bossy Woman remains the only broodmare on his books - but Cousins concedes he may have been influenced by a sentimental attachment to the foal’s famous father.

“So You Think would have to be the most magnificent looking horse I’ve ever seen,” Cousins told ANZ News.

“I saw him run live twice, and I was gobsmacked by his presence and the way he carried himself in the mounting yard. After he went to stud I bid on a couple of So You Think weanlings, but I didn’t manage to get them. So I thought the next best thing would be to buy a mare in foal to So You Think, which is one of the main reasons for buying Bossy Woman on the advice of Michael and Anna [Flannery].

“Sadly her first foal died in a paddock accident before she could get to the racetrack, but I sent her back to So You Think and the resulting foal was Bossy Benita. The original plan had been to keep her and race her myself, but I soon worked out that I probably couldn’t afford to do that so I took her to the sales and I’m really pleased that she ended up with Michael [Mehegan].

“I met Michael for the first time when he bought her, and he asked for my email address so I could be included on all her stable updates. We speak from time to time and I’ve told him I could be any more excited about Bossy Benita if I owned 50 per cent of her.

“It’s been a real thrill for me and I get such enjoyment from seeing her win races, especially for a smaller trainer who is trying to establish himself because it can be a very tough game. It’s always the highlight of my week when she runs, so I’m really looking forward to Saturday and hopefully she can get another win on the board.

“I have kept Bossy Woman’s last two foals [a filly by Palace Pier and a colt by Fierce Impact] and we sent her back to So You Think before he died, so all being well we’ll have another full sibling to Bossy Benita later this year, which is very exciting.”
