Elite thoroughbred nursery Daandine Stud headlined a ‘selective’ day of trade at the Magic Millions Gold Coast March Yearling Sale when a filly by reigning Queensland Champion Sire Better Than Ready (More Than Ready) offered by the operation was purchased by champion trainer Tony Gollan for $130,000.

At the close of trade on day 1, Magic Millions reported that 139 yearlings had changed hands at a clearance of 63 per cent. Despite the clearance sitting below the 67 per cent recorded last year, turnover for the larger offering of horses improved by 43 per cent to sit at $5,460,000. The average rose to $39,281, six per cent, while the median increased 15 per cent to $30,000.

Magic Millions managing director Barry Bowditch said: “It was no doubt a selective market. I think good trade horses or those good types that vetted out well, there was a solid appetite for, albeit selective. I think if you're anywhere off the pace or you've vetted a little bit bad, there are cracks to be found.

What's On

“There's huge opportunity out there for the market, whether you're a trainer or an owner that wants to race, especially here in Queensland with big prize-money to get involved in this catalogue, because I think we've got a very motivated lot of vendors out there that are looking to meet the market, wherever they possibly can.”

Bowditch noted that while the clearance rate was not where they would like it to be, several key metrics had strengthened year-on-year.

“Obviously, the clearance rate of 63 per cent is not where we want to end up. And we'll be obviously working very hard between now and till the end of the sale tomorrow to get that up to an acceptable level. But fundamentally, we've sold almost 40 more horses than what we did at the same stage last year.

“We've got an increased average. We've got a gross that is $1.8 up on last year. So, there are plenty of numbers that are pleasing. If we can move our clearance rate in the right direction, and the buyers find an appetite to really get involved, I think there's a great opportunity to improve our numbers and end up with a satisfying result come the end of tomorrow.”

He added that the sale’s position late in the Australasian yearling sales season may have contributed to buyers, particularly interstate and international, taking a more cautious approach.

“I think they've played a part, but they're being selective,” Bowditch said. “I think as the year goes on they are more selective. They're getting to the point where we're a long way through the year when it comes to lots being sold. They've got other sales they want to go to, whether it be next week or in weeks and months to go on, it's been a busy time over the last six weeks.

“We'd like to think we'd have a few more buyers than what we had here, but in saying that there's plenty of participation both online and on the phone. So they are playing a part from wherever they are and all in all, I think, when they find the right horse, they're locking in and having a dip.

The top-selling Better Than Ready filly is the second foal from six-time winner and multiple stakes placegetter Gem Of Scotland (Rothesay), and vendors Jan Clark and John Robbins were pleased, though not surprised, to see her attract strong interest in the ring.

“We're very pleased. We try to get them into the best stables to give them every chance,” Clark told ANZ News. “She is a lovely walking filly. She's been really good and has handled this preparation and down here very well. Quite a few people looked at her. She had a lot of vet inspections.”

Punching well above their weight in terms of graduate success, Daandine is the nursery that famously produced Written Tycoon (Iglesia), Capitalist (Written Tycoon), Southport Tycoon (Written Tycoon) as well as Isotope (Deep Field), who are just the headline acts among a host of other stakes-winning graduates.

“People are starting to know that Daandine produces winners,” Robbins added. “We've got a good name throughout, probably Australia, and our name is getting stronger every year. We get repeat buyers, particularly in January. We’re very happy with where the horses that we've sold today have gone.”

Gollan, who also secured Lot 10 from the Daandine draft, another Better Than Ready filly for $85,000 in partnership with Dream Thoroughbreds, has enjoyed significant success with the sire in the past. His 2023 Magic Millions 2YO Classic (RL, 1200m) winner Skirt The Law was also by the Lyndhurst Farm-based sire.

“Maybe another Skirt The Law, who knows? We have bought a few Better Than Readys since we've been here,” Gollan said.

“This filly [Lot 170] was probably the pick of them so far. She’s a nice, sharp, filly. I remember her mother racing and she was quite a good mare. So, out of a good mare, by a good stallion, what you come here to buy are QTIS horses, which is a sharp, early running daughter of Better Than Ready.

“I think we've got about six into the stable so far, so we've got a good sale so far. It's good buying here today and long may it continue.

“I think it’s been good, we’re here mainly to try and buy these QTIS horses. I think there’s a good mix of nice, QTIS running horses here today, and I think if you really open your sights here, there's certainly enough horses to come home with.”

The in-form stable of Tony and Maddy Sears was also active on day one, securing three lots for a combined $300,000 to finish the day as leading buyer.

Their most expensive purchase was a colt by Newgate Farm’s first-season sire Wild Ruler (Snitzel), who they purchased from the Figtree Thoroughbreds draft for $120,000.

The youngster is out of Desert Rose (Iffraaj), a placed three-quarter sister to Karaka Million (RL, 1200m) winner Xiong Feng (Iffraaj), from the family of $1.5 million earner and Group 3 winner Zarastro (I Am Invincible).

“I really liked him from when I saw him on Tuesday and he just caught our attention straight away,” Maddy Sears, who landed the winning bid from the pre-parade ring, told ANZ News.

“Initially I thought he would be a good breeze-up style of horse at a lower price, and then when he crept up there, I had dad on the phone and he was like ‘yes, no, yes, no’.

“He's so athletic and he looks like you put a saddle on him now, and he would just go. Really, really like him. He's just a really nice colt.”

Sears said Wild Ruler’s strong start with his first runners, a cohort led by Golden Slipper (Gr 1, 1200m) contender Stretan Ruler, meant they stretched to secure the colt.

“Every time we got him out, he'd just done everything right and just had a good brain and was really looking forward to training him.

“Wild Ruler has got one of the favourites for the Slipper, and it helps that he's QTIS, and BOBS as well. So there's plenty of upside to him racing with us and I can't wait to train him with dad.”

The Sears team later returned to secure another by the young sire, paying $90,000 for Lot 143, a filly out of juvenile winner Emtevee Queen (Testa Rossa) from the Kenmore Lodge draft.

Sears said the sale offered strong value and a wide range of options for buyers.

“We are looking for a lot of value, and we've ended up with about 17 on our final list, so that was quite good,” she said. “Lots of very different horses, but mainly targeting fillies. We've got some big clients looking for fillies, and trade colts. It's a different sort of sale this year, I hope it's worked well for everyone.”

Newgate Farm’s first-season sire Artorius (Flying Artie) continued to generate interest when a colt from the Newhaven Park draft was purchased by trainer Adam Campton and Washpool Lodge for $100,000.

Catalogued as Lot 85, the colt is the first foal from winning Snitzel (Redoute’s Choice) mare Burnt Orange, herself a daughter of Group 2 winner Catch A Fire (Sebring) and therefore a three-quarter sister to Group 2 winner Zloties (Snitzel).

Campton was delighted to secure another son of the promising freshman.

“I got a lovely [Artorius] in New Zealand and I've been trying to get a couple more,” he said. “I just liked the way this horse went about his business, he is from a good farm, Newhaven do a super job. He is well balanced and still has plenty of maturing to do, but just loved the way he walked. He was a really good mover.”

Campton added he had long been an admirer of the Blue Diamond (Gr 1, 1200m)-winning stallion.

“I was a big fan of Artorius as a racehorse, he went on and obviously continued to race and had a really good turn of foot, and it looks like his progeny are going to be the same.”

He also highlighted the value available for Queensland buyers targeting QTIS incentives.

“It's our home sale. We're always trying to purchase QTIS horses, but there's a lot of good horses at these sales, and you can get them for good value. We have got a lot of clients that want to go in cheaper horses. A lot of other sales are very expensive… so it's good to buy from this March sale.

“I have had a lot of luck. I've had a few horses head to Hong Kong and do really well and I've had a couple stay here and go on to win a number of races. So, it's a good sale to buy from, and it's always good value.”

The second and final day of the Magic Millions Gold Coast March Yearling Sale will begin at 10am AEST on Tuesday.

Morning Briefing

Australia

Corniche shoots for Caulfield prize

Cranbourne trainer Shawn Mathrick is hoping former Godolphin gelding Corniche (Fastnet Rock) can continue his encouraging resurgence when he lines up in Saturday’s VOBIS Gold Sprint (1200m) at Caulfield. The five-year-old will be making his second start for Mathrick after finishing runner-up in the Abell Stakes (Listed, 1200m) at Cranbourne on February 27, his first appearance since last September. Corniche previously had 14 starts for Godolphin, winning twice while trained by James Cummings and later Ciaron Maher. Mathrick admitted he initially had concerns when the horse first arrived in his care. “I was worried when he first came and thought, ‘I’ve done my brass here’,” Mathrick said. “But it’s taken a bit of work and he’s thriving at the beach.” Mathrick said targeted conditioning had helped address knee issues that were affecting the horse’s action. “His action was terrible when he came to me, so we’ve been doing a lot of beach work with him,” he said. “He galloped on Monday and worked the place down.” Corniche showed significant ability early in his career, placing in both the Blue Diamond Preview (Listed, 1000m) and Prelude (Gr 3, 1100m) (C\&G) before winning the Skyline Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) and later the Sunshine Coast Guineas (Gr 3, 1600m). Mathrick said the stable would monitor his progress this campaign before setting longer-term targets. “The Goodwood in Adelaide might be a race for him, so we’ll see how he comes through Saturday,” he said. Softer track conditions are expected to suit the gelding given his knee concerns.

Lagunanini chasing Showdown repeat for family

Lagunanini (Credit: Racing Photos)

The Trent Busuttin and Natalie Young-trained Lagunanini (I Am Immortal) will attempt to emulate her older brother McGaw when she lines up in Saturday’s $1 million VOBIS Platinum Showdown (1200m) at Caulfield. Like McGaw, Lagunanini heads into the race off a debut victory, with the filly breaking through at Sale on March 1, while her brother won his maiden at Pakenham before capturing last year’s Showdown. Beyond their pedigree, however, the pair have taken different paths to the race. McGaw was famously purchased by Emma-Lee and David Browne for $14,000, while Busuttin and Young paid $160,000 to secure Lagunanini at Inglis Premier last year. The investment could prove a smart one, with McGaw having since developed into a Group 2 winner, boosting the pedigree page of the two-year-old filly. “We loved her the first time we saw her,” Young said. “She’s got a great body on her and she’s done nothing wrong since coming into the barn. We gave her that first preparation and then tipped her out for a break. The penny has dropped this time and she’s handling the pressure.” Young said the filly’s professionalism should stand her in good stead on raceday. “It will be a big atmosphere, but she’s very sensible and Beau Mertens knows her well,” she said. Lagunanini remains nominated for several Sydney features, including the Golden Slipper (Gr 1, 1200m), ATC Sires’ Produce Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) and Percy Sykes Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m), although connections are focused firmly on Saturday’s assignment.

Jigsaw primed to continue winning run in VOBIS Gold Sprint

Cindy Alderson is confident Jigsaw (Manhattan Rain) can extend his winning streak in Saturday’s VOBIS Gold Sprint (1200m) at Caulfield. The seven-year-old has been in career-best form this season, headlined by his victory in the Railway Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) at Ellerslie in January – a breakthrough top-level success for the gelding, Alderson and jockey Logan Bates. The win pushed Jigsaw’s prize-money beyond $2 million and capped a strong spring–summer campaign. Alderson said the gelding had handled the trip back from New Zealand well despite travel disruptions. “He enjoyed his time over there. He got off the plane and really thrived in the lead-up to the Railway,” Alderson said. “He looked amazing and trained very well at Byerley Park. The flights got pushed back and delayed, so the trip home took longer than expected, but he’s back now and he’s happy.” Jigsaw was freshened after the Railway and has since tuned up with a trial behind Martial Music (Your Song), whose subsequent Benchmark win has added merit to the form. The gelding will carry 61 kilograms on Sunday – four kilograms more than nearest rival She’s Bulletproof (Shooting To Win) – but Alderson believes conditions suit. “When your rating gets as high as his you have to go to harder races, but luckily this handicap is capped at 61 kilos,” she said. “He’s a little quieter now, but he’s a seven-year-old and this will be his sixth run of the campaign.” Jigsaw could back up in next week’s William Reid Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) if he performs well, while the $500,000 Country Discovery (1200m) at Ballarat on Good Friday is also under consideration.

Different Gravy to kick off Derby campaign despite wide gate

Henry Dwyer will press ahead with Different Gravy’s (Ghaiyyath) autumn program despite the gelding drawing wide in Saturday’s VOBIS Platinum Guineas (1600m) at Caulfield. The son of Ghaiyyath (Dubawi) has come up with barrier 16, although he could move in one gate if the emergency Merimbula (Blue Point) fails to gain a start. Dwyer said he was reluctant to alter the gelding’s preparation due to the draw. “He needs to start somewhere and that’s been his long-term starting point, so I don’t want to change a preparation just because of a bad barrier,” Dwyer said. Different Gravy is being prepared for the Queensland Derby (Gr 1, 2400m) at Eagle Farm in late May, with Dwyer mapping out a four-run campaign leading into the race. Following Saturday’s return, the gelding is expected to head to Sydney for the Frank Packer Plate (Gr 3, 2000m) at Randwick before continuing to Brisbane for the Rough Habit Plate (Gr 3, 2000m) at Doomben. “We didn’t accept in the Australian Derby because it was coming around a bit soon,” Dwyer said. “The mile now, then 2000 metres in a month and a lead-up run into the Derby sounds about right.” Different Gravy enjoyed a breakthrough campaign last preparation, progressing from a Swan Hill maiden win over 1600 metres to capture a Listed 1800-metre race during Melbourne Cup week before claiming the inaugural Melbourne Classic (2000m) at Caulfield. Dwyer believes he will continue to improve as the distances increase. “We got him out to 2000 metres last preparation and I think he’ll eat up the 2400 metres this time,” he said.

Warwoven among Slipper hopefuls chasing last-chance qualifiers

Warwoven (Credit: Michael Mcinally)

Saturday’s Magic Night Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) and Pago Pago Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) at Rosehill will provide the final opportunity for several juveniles to force their way into the field for next week’s Golden Slipper (Gr 1, 1200m).

Among them is former Slipper favourite Warwoven (Sword Of Stare), who currently sits 18th in the order of entry and needs a strong performance in Group company to secure a start.

The Sword Of State (Snitzel) colt headed to the Gold Coast for January’s Magic Millions 2YO Classic (RL, 1200m) unbeaten in two starts, but was controversially scratched when Racing Queensland veterinarians deemed him lame.

Trainer Bjorn Baker, who also prepares last Saturday’s Todman Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) winner and current Slipper co-favourite Paradoxium (Extreme Choice), believes Warwoven will improve significantly on his recent first-up fourth in the Skyline Stakes at Randwick.

“He is going to come on, no doubt about it,” Baker said. “He’s probably even got a touch more improvement from where Paradoxium is at the moment.”

Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott will have four runners across the two races as they seek a late Slipper contender.

Fillies By Choice (Written By) and Lumbini (Russian Revolution) contest the Magic Night, while Plagiarism (Written By) and Drumfire (Farnan) line up in the Pago Pago.

By Choice has been consistent through four starts, including a third placing in the Sweet Embrace Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m), and Bott expects the filly to again be prominent.

“She’s been very honest throughout her career,” Bott said. “She puts herself up on pace and should appreciate a strong tempo.”

Plagiarism has also been competitive in his three runs to date, finishing less than a length from winner Campione D’Italia (Snitzel) when fifth in the Skyline Stakes.

Stablemate Drumfire enters the Pago Pago after making a winning debut at Muswellbrook last Sunday, with Bott keen to test the colt in stronger company despite the quick turnaround.

Phar Lap Stakes key step for Waller trio

The Phar Lap Stakes (Gr 2, 1500m) has long served as a launching pad for emerging Chris Waller three-year-olds and the champion trainer again holds a strong hand in Saturday’s Rosehill feature. Waller has won the race eight times since 2015, when Winx (Street Cry) provided his first victory, and this year he will saddle Sixties (Flying Artie), Soverato (Vadamos) and Panova (Trapeze Artist). Australian Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) placegetter Sixties heads the market and is being aimed towards the Doncaster Mile. Should he win on Saturday, he would become the first colt to deliver Waller victory in the race, with all eight of the stable’s previous winners being fillies. Panova, a $7.50 chance in early betting, boasts a profile similar to several of Waller’s previous winners. The filly captured the Carbine Club Stakes (Gr 3, 1600m) at Flemington during the spring before finishing sixth when resuming in the Surround Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m). Waller expects the daughter of Trapeze Artist (Snitzel) to improve sharply second-up. “It’s just one step back from the Group 1s and seems to give them good confidence,” Waller said. “It has been a good stepping stone and Panova is a really nice filly. I thought she would run a length or two better first-up, but I think she was just underdone.”

Price and Kent send wet-track hopes north

Mick Price and Michael Kent Jnr are hoping Sydney’s typically rain-affected autumn tracks can play into the hands of stable runners Globe (Charm Spirit) and La Fracas (Night Of Thunder) this weekend. Both horses will resume at Rosehill on Saturday, with Group 1 winner Globe lining up in the Ajax Stakes (Gr 2, 1500m) and La Fracas contesting the Maurice McCarten Stakes (Gr 3, 1100m). Globe will make his first appearance since being withdrawn from last year’s Cox Plate (Gr 1, 2040m) on veterinary advice, having won the Caulfield Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m) at his previous start. Kent Jnr said the gelding had settled in well after arriving in Sydney several weeks ago. “We’ve planned Sydney to take advantage of soft tracks,” Kent Jnr said. “He did win a Group 1 on good ground last time, but we feel he is an excellent wet tracker. His trials have been excellent. From the outside gate he’ll roll forward, but if the track firms up his chances decrease. If it stays soft, his chances improve.” Kent Jnr said the soft tissue swelling that ruled Globe out of the Cox Plate required only rest. Nominated for both the Doncaster Mile (Gr 1, 1600m) and Queen Elizabeth Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m), Globe’s carnival targets remain flexible. Stablemate La Fracas will attempt to maintain his unbeaten first-up record in the Maurice McCarten, although Kent Jnr noted the 1100 metres is short of the gelding’s preferred distance. “Mick thinks he’s one of the best wet trackers he has ever seen,” Kent Jnr said. Craig Williams rides La Fracas, with Tom Berry aboard Globe.

McEvoy ramps up return with busy Rosehill book

Kerrin McEvoy (Credit: Getty Images)

Three-time Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m)-winning jockey Kerrin McEvoy will continue to build momentum in his return from injury with seven rides at Rosehill on Saturday. McEvoy spent six weeks on the sidelines after breaking his foot in a barrier trial incident in January. He returned with a single ride last weekend before increasing his workload with four mounts at Warwick Farm during the week. The senior rider will also have four rides at Friday’s Kembla Grange Classic meeting before tackling the Coolmore Classic (Gr 1, 1500m) program at Rosehill. “The foot feels good and it’s nice to be back and have a few rides on Saturday,” McEvoy said. “I’ve had a few trials and have been able to get enough loading in the gym and on the bike. I’ve been swimming a lot, but there’s nothing like race fitness.” Among his Rosehill mounts is Signor Tortoni (Too Darn Hot) for Ron Quinton in the Maurice McCarten Stakes, with the four-year-old stepping into Group company after consecutive wins in easier grade. “Ron said he’s been in good order since and he looks a good chance,” McEvoy said. McEvoy will also partner River Of Stars (Sea The Stars) in the Sky High Stakes (Gr 3, 2000m), with the mare expected to improve sharply second-up after resuming over 1400 metres. While he does not have a ride in the Coolmore Classic, McEvoy confirmed several upcoming Group 1 engagements, including Marhoona (Snitzel) in the Galaxy (Gr 1, 1100m) and Hidrix (Extreme Choice) in the Golden Slipper.

Melham to partner Sheza Alilbi in Doncaster Mile

Jamie Melham has been confirmed to ride Sheza Alibi (Saxon Warrior) in next month’s Doncaster Mile (Gr 1, 1600m) at Randwick. Trainer Peter Moody announced the booking on Thursday, with the filly set to carry just 49 kilograms in the prestigious handicap. Moody had previously indicated he was keen to keep his options open with the progressive three-year-old, but confirmed earlier this week that the Randwick Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) winner would head to the Doncaster. The booking sets up a potential clash with unbeaten star Autumn Glow (The Autumn Sun), who currently sits on the second line of betting. Following confirmation of her Doncaster tilt, Sheza Alibi has tightened to $2.50 favouritism, with Autumn Glow rated a $3.50 chance.

Group 1 winner Savaglee to stand at Mapperley Stud

Savaglee (Credit: Supplied)

Champion three-year-old Savaglee (Savabeel) will stand at Mapperley Stud this season after being secured by a syndicate headed by Windsor Park Stud, Mapperley Stud and Lion Rock Bloodstock. He will be introduced as a fee of $17,500 (plus GST).

Trained by Pam Gerard, the colt won seven races and over $1.2 million in prize money, highlighted by victory in the New Zealand 2,000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m). He also finished runner-up in the Australian Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) and was crowned Champion Three-Year-Old of his crop.

Savaglee was also a Group 3-winning juvenile, winning on debut before claiming the Matamata Slipper (Gr 3, 1200m).

“He’s a super intelligent horse with an amazing constitution and he was tremendously sound throughout a race career at the highest level,” Gerard said.

By ten-time champion sire Savabeel (Zabeel), Savaglee is out of a sister to Symphonic (O’Reilly) – the dam of another champion three-year-old in Orchestral. It is a family that has also produced Group 1 winners Atishu (Savabeel), Sepals (Calyx), Aegon (Sacred Falls) and Daffodil (No Excuse Needed).

Mapperley Stud principal Simms Davison said the farm had been seeking a stallion prospect of Savaglee’s calibre. “We have waited patiently to find the right horse to fill the void after losing Contributer and it’s extremely satisfying to secure a colt of Savaglee’s quality,” Davison said.

Giacomo defends South Waikato Cup crown

Veteran gelding Giacomo (Puccini) may have earned himself another campaign after defending his title in the South Waikato Cup (2000m) at Matamata on Wednesday. Trained by Peter and Shaun McKay, the seven-year-old produced another determined display, overcoming an early challenge from My Maebelline Girl (Shamoline Warrior) before regaining the lead approaching the home turn and holding off the late runs of Te Akau pair Crown Princess (Embellish) and Altari (Savabeel) to score by 0.7 lengths. Peter McKay said the performance had prompted connections to reconsider the gelding’s immediate future. “It was really good,” he said. “He likes to dictate and he didn’t get it all his own way this time. He had to take a sit and then get going again before the corner, which he handled well. We thought it might be his last season, but he’s put his hand up again.” The Matamata trainers will have a quieter weekend with Just Call Me Jonny (Eminent) heading to Tauranga for Saturday’s Rating 75 (2100m). “He’s come through his last-start win well and had a week back at Milan Park where he put on good condition,” McKay said. “I think he’s more of a stayer now, so the step straight to 2100 metres should suit.” Meanwhile, Group 3 winner Spencer (Derryn) has returned from a spell after his summer campaign and is being set for winter racing. “He’s come back carrying plenty of condition and should enjoy getting onto wetter tracks,” McKay said.

Yokozuna to resume at Tauranga

South Auckland trainer Donna Logan is hoping forecast rain eases ahead of Saturday’s Tauranga meeting as promising three-year-old Yokozuna (Fierce Impact) prepares to resume. The lightly raced gelding will contest the J Swap Contractors 3YO (1200m), having had just two starts to date. “I’m looking forward to seeing him back,” Logan said. “I’m hoping there isn’t too much rain because I’m uncertain how much he will handle.” Yokozuna won on debut at Ruakaka as a late juvenile last July before finishing runner-up to Tajana (Darci Brahma) in the Northland Breeders’ Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) a month later. The gelding has since been given time to strengthen and pleased Logan with a trial win over 1000 metres at Tauranga last month. “He’s been off the scene for quite some time but he’s strengthened up a lot and matured physically,” Logan said. “He probably wasn’t a two-year-old when you see how he’s developed now, so what he did then was very encouraging.” Logan will also run Unwritten (Teleperion) and Syracuse (Swiss Ace) in a Rating 75 over 1400 metres, both backing up after unplaced efforts over a mile at Te Aroha last week. “I thought Unwritten would have won another by now but Opie said she didn’t quite get the mile,” Logan said. “Back to 1400 metres should suit them both.”

Ralph sticks with Taplin aboard Leroy Brown

Trainer Stephen Ralph is confident Leroy Brown (Ace High) can continue his strong form when he lines up in Saturday’s Japan Trophy (Gr 2, 1600m) at Tauranga. The Te Awamutu horseman has opted to retain apprentice Jack Taplin on the five-year-old after the pair combined for an impressive front-running victory in an open handicap over a mile at Matamata last start. “I said to Jack at Matamata that you should be able to lead and it was a ten out of ten ride,” Ralph said. “We like to form a relationship between the horse and the jockey and try to stick with it.” Leroy Brown also boasts a strong record at Tauranga, with three wins and two placings from six starts at the track. His only unplaced effort there came in last year’s running of the Japan Trophy. “Last year he just took off and did too much in the run,” Ralph said. “But mentally he’s getting a lot better.” While barrier 15 poses a challenge, Ralph expects the gelding’s natural speed to allow him to press forward into his preferred role. “We’ve got a bit of a problem with the draw, but if it gets a bit wetter he may not have to spend as much petrol getting to the lead,” he said. “Anything from a Good4 to a Soft7 suits him, but once it gets really heavy it makes things difficult.” Should Leroy Brown perform well, Ralph said a trip south for the Flying Handicap (Listed, 1400m) at Trentham is under consideration.

Winter specialist Knock Off resumes at Wanganui

While many New Zealanders brace for colder weather, Wanganui trainer Gerard Cvitanovich is welcoming the approach of winter with optimism as stable star Knock Off (Fabulous) prepares to resume on Saturday. The son of the unraced sire Fabulous (High Chaparral) has proven particularly effective during the winter months, highlighted by last year’s campaign when he recorded three wins and two placings from five starts, including a runner-up effort in the Metric Mile (Gr 3, 1600m). “He is happy over winter; he had a good winter last year,” Cvitanovich said. Knock Off will kick off his preparation in the 1340-metre open handicap at his home track, with Merena Hudson taking the ride for the first time. Cvitanovich said the gelding had progressed well ahead of his first-up run. “He seems well. He went to the jump-outs on Tuesday where he just went nice and quietly,” he said. “It’s nice having a race like that right here, so we thought it would be a good time to have a go. We haven’t gotten too excited yet. We’re really just getting him ready for winter racing.” Bred by Cvitanovich’s son Nick, Knock Off is out of the winning Rusty Spur (West By West) mare Princess Nicole. The gelding holds sentimental value for Cvitanovich, having delivered the trainer his first winner in over two decades when breaking his maiden two years ago. Since then, Knock Off has recorded four wins and four placings from 12 starts, earning over $107,000. He will carry 59 kilograms from barrier seven and was rated a $13 chance on Thursday, with Ma Te Wa (Time Test) heading the market at $1.90.

US: $2 million Nyquist filly steals the show at OBS

A filly by Darley America's leading sire Nyquist (Uncle Mo) topped the second day of the OBS March Sale when selling to Killora/Linton, agent for Boyd Racing, for $2 million (AU$2,821,490) on Wednesday. Consigned by Ciaran and Amy Dunne of Wavertree Stables, the two-year-old was the second progeny of Nyquist to have sold for seven figures by Wavertree at the sale. They consigned a $1.2 million (AU$1,692,900) colt to Morplay Racing and Marquee Bloodstock during the opening session on Tuesday. Ciaran Dunne told Bloodhorse: "That's beyond all expectations. You hope, but someone always tells me, hope is not a good strategy. "She's by probably one of the top five stallions in the country, if not the top three. She's a beautiful physical, she had an unbelievable work. She vetted clean, and if you can't sell her, you just need to quit selling." She added: "He's put a lot of meals on the table. We were very lucky that we were associated with Mr [Paul] Reddam, and he raced him, so obviously we were exposed to a lot of them, and from day one they were just good horses. We kind of got a little bit of a leg up on everybody else, and for us he's just the gift that keeps on giving."

Maiden Of The Week

The Next Episode

2 c Snitzel ex Humma Humma by Denman

The Next Episode pictured as a yearling (Credit: Magic Millions)

Ciaron Maher’s high-priced Snitzel (Redoute’s Choice) colt The Next Episode confirmed his potential when breaking maiden status at the second time of asking over 1000 metres at Warwick Farm on Wednesday.

The colt matched the highest price ever recorded for a yearling by his star-crossed sire when bringing $2.8 million at Magic Millions Gold Coast last year and he debuted in the Golden Gift (1100m) last November, finishing 11th in the $1 million juvenile feature.

He had since trialled twice at Warwick Farm under Jason Collett, the latest an eye-catching win on March 2.

Partnered by Collett again on Wednesday, the two-year-old was briefly caught behind runners but showed a good turn of foot when the gap came to defeat Under Focus (Too Darn Hot) by a length. Steel Will (I Am Invincible) was a further 0.6 lengths away in third.

“It was a tough watch for a bit, but he's got a very good turn of foot,” said stable representative Johann Gerard-Dubord.

“We saw that in his trial last week, and Jason was well aware, so he just had to be patient and once he had the gap, it was very impressive.

2yo: (17 Sep 2023 b c)

Trainer: Ciaron Maher

Owner: P M Cunningham, Widden Stud Pty Ltd, Ciaron Maher Racing, W J Betar, P S Frampton, C Massie, P Trainor, J M Simmons, Ms S M Fitzgerald, A K Racing & Ms S Hill

Sire: 2025 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale V: Widden Stud P: Ciaron Maher Bloodstock, $2,800,000

Won: Asahi Super Dry Maiden Handicap, 1000m, March 11, Warwick Farm

Breeder: Widden Bloodstock Pty Ltd, Warringah Stud Farm, Frampton Racing, NSW

“He's a very well-bred horse and was an expensive yearling. He's always been showing plenty of talent, that's why we got him ready for the Golden Gift last prep, but things didn't work out on the day.

“He was drawn badly, got a bit of a squeeze at the start and pulled up a bit off after the race. So we just gave him some time to mature and come right. He's a lovely horse going forward and is very talented. It’s great to get a win for a nice group of owners.”

Bred by Widden Stud in partnership and offered in their draft at the Gold Coast, The Next Episode was bought by his trainer and ownership group and races in the Rebel Racing colours of prominent UK owner Phil Cunningham.

He is the first winner out of Group 3 winner Humma Humma (Denman), herself a half-sister to stakes score Tycoon Humma (Capitalist).

The Next Episode’s I Am Invincible (Invincible Spirit) half-brother will be offered by Widden Stud as Lot 341 at the Inglis Easter Yearling Sale later this month.
