Big Wigs sets a gold standard for Tony’s team

As Tony Santic and his team prepare for life after Makybe Diva (Desert King), the timely tonic provided by the victory of Big Wigs (Gold Standard) in the big-money VOBIS Platinum Showdown (1200m) at Caulfield last Saturday could also pave the way for a potential tilt at Sydney riches this autumn.

Two weeks to the day since the mighty mare’s passing left a huge void in his life, Big Wigs delivered the lucrative triumph for Santic and his ecstatic ownership group, who struck a deal for the striking homebred colt over a glass or two of red wine imbibed at the Makybe farm last year.

What's On

Having collected their share of the $550,000 first prize – as well as an additional $35,000 in VOBIS bonuses – the group could certainly afford to uncork another top shelf bottle from Santic’s wine cellar.

The farm’s long-serving stud manager Joe Murray is convinced that Makybe Diva, the three-time Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) heroine who lost a short battle with colic at the age of 27, played her part from above by willing Big Wigs over the line in the $1 million contest.

His young son’s athletics meeting prevented Murray from attending Victorian Owners and Breeders Raceday in person, but there were plenty of raucous cheers from the sidelines when the Phillip Stokes-trained colt just got the upper hand in a stirring battle with the equally progressive filly Miss Chanel (Tagaloa).

“That win was just the thing Tony and the whole team needed after what’s obviously been a very tough couple of weeks for us all,” Murray told ANZ News.

“It’s so exciting for everyone to have a colt like this come along at just the right time. He’s such a professional, even Brad Pearson who broke him in said that he’s the most sensible and straightforward colt that he’s ever dealt with.

“The reports from the Stokes stable have been much the same from the start, he’s so relaxed and professional that you wouldn’t even know he’s a colt. He just goes about his business with no fuss, even when he travelled over to Adelaide for his first start he didn’t turn a hair. It’s a huge bonus that he’s got the temperament to match his talent, and he’s become one of the stable favourites very quickly.

“He’s not the biggest, but he’s got a big heart and a real will to win. When Lachie [Neindorf] asked him for an effort on Saturday, he just put his foot down and really wanted it. That’s a huge weapon in his arsenal and it should hopefully carry him a long way.”

The initial plan had been to send Big Wigs to the paddock after a highly lucrative debut campaign, which also featured a runner-up finish behind Lindsay Park’s Golden Slipper (Gr 1, 1200m) contender Medicinal (Brazen Beau) on February 22. However, given how quickly he has recovered from his weekend exertions, the distinct possibility remains that connections will press on with the colt’s campaign and raise their sights to stakes company in the coming weeks.

His late strength in The Showdown would indicate that 1400 metres or perhaps even a mile would be within the colt’s comfort zone, which opens up the prospect of chasing Group 1 glory in the Sires Produce Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) at Randwick in three weeks’ time.

“We got a message through from the stable on Sunday morning and apparently he’s come through the run super,” said Murray.

“So they’re going to have a look at the upcoming program and see if there might be another suitable option. Stokesy hasn’t mentioned anything about the Sires Produce or anything like that, so I don’t know whether we’d consider throwing it a late nomination, but you’d have to think that 1400 metres would be no issue. That might just be me getting carried away at this stage, but you have to dream in this game.”

To have bred such a precocious colt from a mare who cost Santic a mere $20,000 via Inglis Digital in 2020 is certainly the stuff of dreams. A bleeding attack saw Nooks And Crannies (Denman) retired from racing in 2019 after eight starts and three wins for Gold Coast trainer Toby Edmonds.

She was subsequently sold by Aquis in foal to Divine Prophet (Choisir), and whilst that mating only produced a moderate performer in Noadiah, her progeny since then have certainly elevated the mare’s profile.

Cavity Bay (Cable Bay), who recently joined Clarry Conners’ stable, won the VOBIS Gold Elstroem (1300m) at her third start and was also stakes-placed on three occasions during her time in Victoria with Tony and Calvin McEvoy.

Her baby brother looks to have even more upside. The colt has also become the latest flag-bearer for Widden Victoria resident Gold Standard (Sebring), who has so far registered a remarkable 42 winners from 74 starters. Among his progeny are stakes-placed pair Gage Roads and Golden Queen, while the headliner is 2022 JJ Atkins (Gr 1, 1600m) hero Sheza Belter – all from his debut crop.

Nooks And Crannies’ fourth foal, a filly by Yulong’s emerging sire Lucky Vega (Lope De Vega), is also set to race in the Makybe colours after she was passed in at the recent Inglis Melbourne Premier Yearling Sale.

“The mare throws a really good type,” said Murray.

“She’s a particularly attractive mare and her foals have all been in the same mould. Gold Standard is also a beautiful looking horse so it’s no surprise that Big Wigs is a lovely colt. He’s jet black and has that Lonhro look, so he always stood out from the very start.

“Gold Standard was sent some mares off the back of Sheza Belter’s win in the JJ Atkins, and I’d say you’ll see a few more of his progeny starting to pop up now. It looks like he can produce a good one and it would be nice if Big Wigs can now fly the flag for the stallion, and for our farm.

“We tried to sell Big Wigs’ half-sister at the Premier Sale, but she didn’t make her $100,000 reserve. We weren’t prepared to go any lower because we knew the colt had a fair bit of talent, even though he hadn’t won at that point.

“So, his win in The Showdown came a few weeks too late for the buying bench, but I’d say that if we were to put the Lucky Vega filly online now, you’d get $100,000 for her in a heartbeat.

“As it turns out we’re happy to keep her and race her, and I’d say some of the Big Wigs’ ownership group might now jump into her. Tony is organising a barbecue at the farm on Friday, so there’s a good chance another deal will be done over a bottle or two of red wine.”

While the celebrations continue back in Gnarwarre on the outskirts of Geelong, Murray will be making his way west to South Australia to oversee the farm’s yearlings at the Adelaide Magic Millions Sale.

Makybe will offer three lots as part of the Rosden Park draft, with Murray hopeful that their Spirit Of Boom (Sequalo) filly (Lot 63), Tassort (Brazen Beau) colt (Lot 318) and Russian Revolution (Snitzel) colt (Lot 293) will defy the recent trend towards an increasingly selective market and catch the eye of the buying bench.

“It’s been a tough sales season for us but we do have high hopes for Adelaide,” said Murray.

“We’ve offered some lovely yearlings this year but maybe because some of the sires haven’t been in fashion, they perhaps haven’t sold quite as well as we would’ve liked. But hopefully the Big Wigs brand will give us a bit of a helping hand in the sales ring at Adelaide.

“The Spirit Of Boom filly is a half-sister to Bold Response, who has won a few races for Julius Sandhu. She’s a really attractive filly who has muscled up nicely over the past few weeks, so I’d say she might prove popular. The Tassort colt is a beautiful mover, and even though he was a November foal he’s a very smart horse, much like Big Wigs.

“I also like our filly Saluki, who we’ll be looking to sell at the Gold Coast Horses in Training Sale later this year. She jumped out really well before the Maribyrnong Plate [Gr 3, 1000m] last year, but then she overraced badly on debut so maybe it all came too quickly for her.

“We’ve transferred her to David Vandyke’s stable on the Sunshine Coast, and if she settles in well in Queensland and figures things out, I do think she might be able to win a race or two for us before we put her up for sale because she’s definitely got a bit of ability.

“Most of our horses have been performing really well on the track, even if we haven’t had the results we would’ve hoped for in the sales ring. But hopefully we can start to turn it around in Adelaide.”

Triple Group 1 winner Provence to be offered at Inglis Chairman’s Sale

Provence (Credit: Race Images)

Three-time Group 1-winning mare Provence (Savabeel) is the latest star attraction confirmed for the Inglis Chairman’s Sale, to be held at Riverside on Thursday, May 7.

Bred and owned by Tony Rider, the Stephen Marsh-trained six-year-old has won on seven occasions and placed on a further three, earning over NZ$1.1 million.

Her first top-flight victory came in the Thorndon Mile (Gr 1, 1600m) last year, before backing that performance up just eight weeks later in the NZ Thoroughbred Breeders Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) at Ellerslie.

She then added the Captain Cook Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) before running third – beaten less than a length – in the Otaki Maori WFA Classic (Gr 1, 1600m) last month.

Provence’s tally of Group 1 wins is bettered only by the mighty Probabeel among daughters of champion sire Savabeel (Zabeel) and she has defeated some of New Zealand’s brightest stars, including Legarto (Proisir), Orchestral (Savabeel), Sharp ‘N’ Smart (Redwood) and El Vencedor (Shocking).

Prior to the Chairman’s Sale, Provence will attempt to defend her crown in the NZ Thoroughbred Breeders Stakes on March 28. She will be offered as a racing and breeding prospect under her owner Tony Rider’s Milan Park banner.

“People will understand what I mean when they see her at Riverside in May, but she is the most magnificent looking mare – an absolute stunner,’’ Rider said.

“Each of her Group 1 wins have come over the mile and we tried her over 2000 metres last start at Group 1 level [in the Bonecrusher New Zealand Stakes] but she just wants it a bit shorter; her turn of foot over the 1400 to 1600 metres is so explosive.

“Her temperament is fantastic and Stephen Marsh says she’s one of the best mares he’s ever trained. I have no doubt she’ll make the most beautiful broodmare but I also believe she has plenty more racing in her as well.’’

Inglis bloodstock sales manager and New Zealand representative Brett Gilding was thrilled to have secured Provence for The Chairman’s Sale.

“You don’t see triple Group 1-winning mares being offered for public auction very often and Provence is a special offering,’’ Gilding said.

“She’s a very accomplished race mare but beyond that, she’s particularly good looking and has a sexy pedigree, so she is going to appeal to a huge range of investors, both international and domestic.

“Tony Rider has established Milan Park as one of the best nurseries in New Zealand and it’s an honour for Inglis to have the opportunity to showcase his star mare to the world.’’

Provence joins the recently announced Generosity (Divine Prophet) amongst the star lots for what is shaping to be another intriguing renewal of The Chairman’s Sale.

Other recent additions include last start Group 3 winner Ahha Ahha (Starspangledbanner), Group 1-placed stakes winner Snow In May (The Autumn Sun), Group winners Coco Jamboo (Massaat), Eternal Flame (Sacred Falls) and Just Feelin’ Lucky (Justify), stakes-winning juvenile Appin Girl (Capitalist) as well as the dams of this season’s star juveniles Fireball (Snitzel) and Guest House (Home Affairs).

Entries for The Chairman’s Sale must close on Friday, March 20. To enter, contact a member of the Inglis bloodstock team or click here.

Inglis HTBA Yearling Sale catalogue released

A yearling colt by Extreme Choice (Not A Single Doubt) will be a headline act at next month’s Inglis HTBA Yearling Sale, for which the catalogue is now available online. The colt, to be consigned by Newgate Farm as Lot 142, is one of 215 yearlings entered for the sale which will be held at Riverside on Sunday, April 19. Progeny by the likes of Alabama Express (Redoute's Choice), Anamoe (Street Boss), Capitalist (Written Tycoon), Dundeel (High Chaparral), Extreme Warrior (Extreme Choice), Hellbent (I Am Invincible), Home Affairs (I Am Invincible), Star Turn (Star Witness), Stay Inside (Extreme Choice), Super Seth (Dundeel), Sword Of State (Snitzel) and Toronado (High Chaparral) also feature. Inglis bloodstock CEO Sebastian Hutch encouraged buyers to review the catalogue, noting that the sale provides an important late-season opportunity to find value in the market. “We’ve a broad cross-section of stallions and vendors represented,’’ Hutch said. “This sale gives buyers further access to commercial yearlings. Another significant advantage of buying at the HTBA Sale is the discounted rate of qualifying for the $12 million Inglis Race Series, with the cost of signing up 50 per cent less than the select yearling sales. The value sign up still gives buyers full access to the Inglis Race Series which includes the $5 million Xtra Bonus Series, the $1 million Pink Bonus Series and the $2 million Inglis Millennium.’’ Recent graduates include the likes of Group 3 winner Cleo Cat (American Pharoah), stakes winner Boston Rocks (Hellbent) and the Group 3-placed Shezanalister (Star Turn). To view the HTBA catalogue, click here. Supplementaries close at 5pm on Friday, April 10 and will be offered at the end of the sale.

Baker pair take different paths to Slipper

Paradoxium (Credit: Race Images)

Trainer Bjorn Baker will take contrasting approaches with his two Golden Slipper (Gr 1, 1200m) contenders, with Paradoxium (Extreme Choice) set for a strong gallop on Tuesday while Warwoven (Sword Of State) enjoys a quiet week ahead of the $5 million feature. Warwoven earned his Slipper place with an emphatic victory in Saturday’s Pago Pago Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) and will head into the race on the seven-day back-up. "You never quite know on the back up. It's always a tricky business," Baker said. "But he couldn't have done much more [on Saturday]. It's good to see him back and win that way. He had to do a fair bit early. Obviously, we’ll be very interested to see how he recovers and hopefully he can be there with Paradoxium, in the same [Cunningham family] colours, next week." Baker confirmed Paradoxium would complete a final serious work on Tuesday. "Paradoxium will have a good gallop on Tuesday. He galloped on Thursday, and I was thrilled with him. He has definitely improved," he said. "Warwoven will have a very easy week, unlike his trainer and connections." The Golden Slipper field will be finalised on Tuesday, with the barrier draw to follow. Baker said the draw would be critical in what shapes as an open renewal. "It’s so important. You can't worry about it, but it definitely has a big impact," he said. Rachel King retains the ride on Warwoven, while Jason Collett sticks with Paradoxium. "I'd say there's probably not too much between them on what we're seeing at the moment," Baker added.

Spain retains Victorious Spirit ride in Rosehill Guineas

Trainer Peter Moody has confirmed Zac Spain will retain the ride on Victorious Spirit (Ghaiyyath) when the emerging colt makes his Sydney debut in Saturday’s Rosehill Guineas (Gr 1, 2000m). Moody, who trains in partnership with Katherine Coleman, could have two runners in the Classic with stablemate Bingi (Snitzel) also likely to line up. Both horses will also be nominated for the Alister Clark Stakes (Gr 2, 2000m) at Caulfield this weekend. Spain partnered Victorious Spirit to a close fourth behind fellow Ghaiyyath (Dubawi) colt Observer in the Australian Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m), and Moody said he was keen to keep faith with the rider despite interest from other jockeys. Spain has been a regular for the stable and also filled in aboard Doncaster Handicap (Gr 1, 1600m) favourite Sheza Alibi (Saxon Warrior) when she resumed in the Angus Armanasco Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m) at Caulfield last month. Moody said the Rosehill assignment would also give both colts valuable experience racing clockwise. ‘’I think they can both run well and I want to give them a spin that way before the [ATC] Derby if they happen to be good enough,’’ Moody said. Bingi finished just a length behind Victorious Spirit in the Australian Guineas despite starting a $151 outsider. ‘’Bingi was the one that was really strong through the line,’’ Moody said. ‘’He’s a big, heavy colt who needs a few runs before he hits his straps.’’ Observer is expected to start favourite for the Rosehill Guineas at $2.40.

Inflamed takes out home feature

Local trainers Shane and Brian Anderton may look north to Riccarton with Inflamed (Ghibellines) after she produced a determined front-running display to win Sunday’s Mosgiel Tavern Beaumont Publican’s Cup (1500m) at Wingatui. The homebred mare was originally intended to take cover, but after jumping smartly apprentice jockey Jack Taplin allowed her to stride forward and take control. Once in front, Taplin rated the mare well and she showed plenty of grit in the straight, digging in late to hold off the fast-finishing The Hangover (Zacinto) by a head. Trainer Shane Anderton admitted the pre-race tactics didn’t unfold as planned but praised the ride from Taplin. “We were hoping to get a bit of cover,” Anderton said. “As I said to the young fella, she can jump and put a length on them pretty quickly. He rated her well, he sat as long as he could and she got the job done.” After proving effective at 1500 metres, a start in Saturday’s South Island Thoroughbred Breeders’ Stakes (Gr 3, 1600m) at Riccarton was briefly considered, although Anderton indicated the quick turnaround may rule that option out. “We were half thinking about going to Riccarton next week but that might be a bit too soon,” he said. Nevertheless, Riccarton remains firmly on the radar with several suitable autumn targets likely to present themselves. Inflamed has now won seven of her 34 starts, including last November’s Stewards Stakes (Listed, 1200m) at Riccarton, earning just shy of $270,000 in prize money.

Platinum Pantheon defies top-weight at Tauranga

Promising three-year-old Platinum Pantheon (Hanseatic) enhanced his growing reputation with a determined victory in Saturday’s J Swap Contractors 3YO (1200m) at Tauranga. The Lisa Latta-trained gelding overcame the topweight of 58.5 kilograms under Opie Bosson, settling three back on the rail before improving into the race approaching the home turn. Pacemaker Lucy In The Sky (Hello Youmzain) led into the straight alongside Chatelle Rose, but Bosson threaded Platinum Pantheon through a narrow gap between the pair at the 200 metres. The gelding responded strongly, drawing clear late to score by 1.1 lengths and register his fourth win from only ten starts. Latta, who was saddling runners at Wanganui, was pleased with the performance, particularly given it was the gelding’s first attempt racing right-handed. “I’m rapt as that was his first time going right-handed, which can be a challenge, but I thought it was a great ride from Opie,” Latta said. “He got him into a beautiful spot and didn’t go around a horse until he had to.” Latta indicated the winter carnival in Queensland could be on the agenda as the lightly raced gelding continues to develop. Platinum Pantheon was purchased for A$60,000 from Rosemont Stud’s draft at the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale and is raced by long-time stable clients Kevin Dixon and Neville McAlister. He has now earned just over $95,000 in prize-money.

Well-related So We Go breaks through at Wanganui

Well-related gelding So We Go (Embellish) rewarded the patience of trainers Kevin and Stephen Gray when breaking through for his maiden victory at Wanganui on Saturday. The son of Cambridge Stud stallion Embellish (Savabeel) is a brother to the stable’s Group 1-performed mare Luberon, who placed in last year’s Railway (Gr 1, 1200m) after victories in the Sweynesse Stakes (Gr 3, 1215m) and Counties Bowl (Gr 3, 1100m). Carrying the gold and black silks of Cambridge Stud principals Sir Brendan and Lady Jo Lindsay, So We Go had shown promise prior to Saturday but needed until his sixth start to record his first win. Ridden by stable jockey Bruno Queiroz, the gelding was sent forward from a wide draw in the six-horse field before settling in the coveted one-one position. He travelled comfortably throughout before peeling three wide on the home turn. Asked for an effort, So We Go quickly asserted his superiority, stretching clear to score by 3.3 lengths. Queiroz credited the addition of blinkers for the improved performance. “It was a great job by the trainers, they put blinkers on this horse and he went well,” Queiroz said. “He jumped quick and when I saw two horses in front I was happy to sit behind the pace and relax. In the last 200 metres the blinkers made a big difference.” Gray was delighted to secure a win for the Lindsays after the gelding’s patient build-up. “He has got a bit of ability, it has just taken a lot of time,” Gray said. “He’s well related and blinkers were always going to make him better, and he probably liked the softer track too. I think he has got a good future.”

49 for Kizuna

Kizuna (Deep Impact) notched up his 49th individual stakes winner when Audacia (3 c ex Lily Noble by Rulership) landed Sunday’s Sho Spring Stakes (Gr 2, 1800m) at Nakayama. Ridden by Akihide Tsumura for trainer Takahisa Tezuka, the colt defeated Ask Edinburgh (Leontes) by a neck, with Acrophase (Lord Kanaloa) just a further nose back in third. Bred by Shunsuke Yoshida, Audacia is out of Rulership (King Kamehameha) mare Lily Noble, who placed second in the Yushun Himba (Japanese Oaks) (Gr 1, 2400m) in 2018 behind superstar filly Almond Eye (Lord Kanaloa). Kizuna stands at Shadai Stallion Station for a fee of 20,000,000 JPY (approx AU$179,320).

JPN: First Grade 2 score for Shake Your Heart

Toru Miya-trained entire Shake Your Heart (6 h Heart's Cry - Rumba Loca by Sri Pekan) captured his first Grade 2 success when landing Sunday’s Tokai TV Hai Kinko Sho (Gr 2, 2000m) at Chukyo. The six-year-old came with a withering late run under Yoshihiro Furukawa to win the 2000-metre contest by a nose over Giovanni (Epiphaneia) with Queen’s Walk (Kizuna) another half-length away in third. Shake Your Heart added to his course and distance win in the Chunichi Shimbun Hai (Gr 3, 2000m) in December.

JPN: Funstar’s first foal gets off the mark

Danon Funstar (Kizuna), the first foal out of Flight Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) heroine Funstar (Adelaide), impressed when racing away to win on debut at Nakayama. Ridden by Christophe Lemaire, the three-year-old colt sat wide throughout and went forward on the home bend. Despite showing greenness in the straight he stretched out to win by a length and three-quarters with plenty up his sleeve. Bear Dokkyun (Curren Black Hill) was second with Vulcan Tesoro (Gold Ship) another three-quarters of a length away in third. Also a winner of the Tea Rose Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m) and Phar Lap Stakes (Gr 2, 1500m), Funstar was initially bought for $80,000 at Inglis Easter before selling to Katsumi Yoshida’s Northern Farm via Inglis Digital for $2.7 million after her racing career.

HK: Teetan eyes Hong Kong Derby glory after Sha Tin double

Preparing to partner Sagacious Life (Put It Back) in next week’s HK$26 million Hong Kong Derby (Listed, 2000m), Karis Teetan hit form with a double at Sha Tin on Sunday. Teetan lifted his season tally to 25 wins with victories aboard Chris So’s Go Go Go (Charm Spirit) in the Class 5 Handicap (1650m) and debutant Mr Incredible (Toronado) for Brett Crawford in the second section of the Class 4 Handicap (1200m). The Mauritian, seeking a second Derby success after Romantic Warrior’s (Acclamation) 2022 triumph, was pleased to rediscover winning form ahead of the Classic. “He had the hood on yesterday to keep him quiet and it was good to have him calm down in the trial,” Teetan said of Sagacious Life after the Brazilian import finished second in a 1700-metre barrier trial at Happy Valley on Saturday. “I’ve been sitting on him every day and I’m really happy – I think he’s going to be a good runner.” Keith Yeung moved to 36 wins for the season after riding a double of his own, partnering Francis Lui’s Call Me Sparkle (Derryn) in the Class 4 Handicap (1200m) before dead-heating aboard Turquoise Velocity (Zoustar) with We Are Hero (Headwater) in the Class 3 Handicap (1000m).

13 for Time Test

Saint Martin (3 c ex Abraxa, by Verglas) provided former Little Avondale Stud shuttler Time Test (Dubawi) with his 13th individual stakes winner when claiming Sunday’s Prix Francois Mathet (Listed, 2100m) at Saint-Cloud. Ridden by Cristian Demuro, the colt stuck to his task well in the straight to come home the length and a half winner over Mirik (Kameko) with Martagny (Zarak) another two lengths adrift in third. Bred by M Wurtenberger, Saint Martin sold for €75,000 at the Arqana October Deauville Yearling Sale in 2024. He is one of six winners out of the Group 3-placed stakes winner Abraxa (Verglas). It proved a good 48 hours for Time Test, with the son of Dubawi (Dubai Millennium) siring his 12th stakes winner on Saturday when Omega Boy took out the Japan Trophy (Gr 2, 1600m) at Tauranga. Having formerly shuttled to New Zealand from the National Stud in England, Time Test now resides permanently in Turkey.

160 for Lope De Vega

Elastic (3 c ex Solilea, by Galileo) provided Ballylinch Stud sire Lope De Vega (Shamardal) with his 160th individual stakes winner when landing Sunday’s Prix Omnium II (Listed, 1600m) on his seasonal debut at Saint-Cloud. Last seen placing at Group 3 level last September, the colt returned to defeat Zambezi (Zelzal) by three-quarters of a length, with another five lengths back to Cielo Di Roma (Romanised) in third. The winner is bred and raced by Wertheimer and Frere. He is a brother to fellow stakes scorer Vagalame and a half-brother to stakes performers Solsticia (Le Havre) and Sinileo (Siyouni). Lope De Vega is standing for a fee of €200,000 (approx AU$327,020).
