The Magic Millions Adelaide Yearling Sale, which has produced Group 1 winners Asfoora (Flying Artie) and Private Eye (Al Maher), as well as Hong Kong standout Galaxy Patch (Wandjina) in recent years, gets underway on Thursday with 359 yearlings (425 less 66 withdrawals) set to go through the ring across two days at the Morphettville complex.

A total of 54 vendors will offer progeny by 109 individual stallions, with the catalogue featuring proven names such as Zoustar (Northern Meteor), Ghaiyyath (Dubawi), Written Tycoon (Iglesia) and The Autumn Sun (Redoute’s Choice). Buyers will also be presented with 15 first-season sires, including locally bred Dalasan (Dalakhani), Hitotsu (Maurice) and Artorius (Flying Artie).

In 2025, the sale returned a clearance rate of 77.34 per cent, with 297 yearlings sold at an average of $48,463, a median of $32,000 and a top price of $350,000, with overall metrics marginally down on the previous year despite an expanded catalogue.

What's On

Magic Millions managing director Barry Bowditch said confidence was high heading into this week’s sale, citing both the depth of the catalogue and encouraging levels of buyer activity on the complex.

“I think there's an exceptional quality of horse here on the grounds,” he told ANZ News. “I think the middle of the sale is very deep and all going well, and vetting in most cases being acceptable, I can see the trade market being exceptionally strong.

“I think today and yesterday the amount of inspections going on is pleasing, it's in line if not better than last year. I think that, albeit, we've got a tighter catalogue this year, so we can't expect the gross to be in line with where it was last year, but, we think, statistically speaking, the average clearance rate, pieces like that, are the bits that we aspire to hold a reasonable number with.”

Despite softer statistical results at last week’s Magic Millions March Sale, Bowditch believes the conditions surrounding the Adelaide sale are more favourable.

Everyone loves coming to Adelaide, whether you're a buyer or a seller, and I feel as if there's good positivity here on the grounds

Barry Bowditch

“I think last week had some boundaries. In fact, it was a larger catalogue, and probably the exceptional circumstances around floods and things like that took a bit of the confidence out of the market. Whereas this week, I feel we have got a very diverse group of buyers.

“Everyone loves coming to Adelaide, whether you're a buyer or a seller, and I feel as if there's good positivity here on the grounds. I don't think we're gonna be breaking any records, by any means, but I think we've got the right quality of horse here. We got the right type of buyer for the quality of horse we've got here, and we can have a solid two-day sale.”

With the sale continuing to build a reputation as a strong source of trade horses, Bowditch added that both international and interstate buying benches are well represented.

“I think we've got some good buyers from Hong Kong, and obviously New Zealand. David Chester [international sales director] has got some other areas of Asia covered, so I feel as if, internationally, we've got a good cross section of buyers, and then the diversity, whether it be Western Australia, Tassie, or all the main states, I think all will feature here on the results sheet as the sale goes on.”

Leading South Australian nursery Mill Park Stud will present a 16-strong draft at Morphettville, with general manager Chris Watson confident the farm has returned with a lineup comparable in quality to last year’s offering.

“We've got a nice lineup that will suit a lot of the prospective buyers, from sprinters, through to some horses that will get over a bit of ground and be better three-year-olds,” Watson told ANZ News. “We are very happy with what we're presenting.”

Among the draft’s prospects is Lot 259, a colt by Russian Revolution (Snitzel) out of Group 3 winner Gogo Grace (New Approach), already the dam of Group 1 performer Hot Too Go (Too Darn Hot).

“He looks like a really sharp style of horse. He looks like he's quite a compact racing style. So I would expect to see him getting up and going pretty early. He's presented well,” Watson said.

Lot 287 is a filly by Spirit Of Boom (Sequalo) out of Ellerslie Railway Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) winner In Style (Fast ‘N’ Famous), a mare who has produced four winners from four to race, including Group 3 scorer Brazen Style (Brazen Beau) and the dual stakes-placed Total Babe (I Am Invincible).

“She's a filly that we expect to need a little bit of time,” Watson said. “She's got plenty of growing to do and filling out, so we expect her to really excel as a three-year-old.”

Few lots in the draft carry as much depth as Lot 236, a filly by Riverbank’s first-season sire Dalasan (Dalakhani) out of Fartoo Flashy (Galileo), offering a full-circle moment for the farm, which bred and sold the stallion.

The filly is a half-sister to two stakes scorers, Group 3 winner Waging War (Rebel Raider) and Group 2 winner Arctic Glamour (Frosted), who further enhanced the page when finishing runner-up in last Saturday’s Coolmore Classic (Gr 1, 1500m).

“We were watching closely last Saturday with Arctic Glamour running and so close to winning a Group 1, which she thoroughly deserves. But even such a nice second in a Group 1 has really updated the pedigree and made it very active and current. She's a beautiful style of filly, probably one of our better Dalasan examples we've got here. So a beautiful type.”

Having supported Dalasan since his retirement to stud, Watson said the farm has been encouraged by the consistency and athleticism of his progeny.

“They've got plenty of scope. Big, long barrels and plenty of leg. We've usually got about half a dozen on the farm each year, and we think they're real progressive styles of horses, very athletic types.”

Having finished second on the vendor table last year behind Baramul Stud, the Meningie operation is hopeful of another strong showing, buoyed by both local support and continued interstate and international participation.

“I think after last year where we had certainly a lot of traders, it's always been seen as quite a trade sale,” Watson said.

“But there were certainly plenty of types last year that suited all those trainers looking for horses to go directly to their clients, and I think that gave a lot of vendors confidence to continue to bring good quality horses here, and we've certainly done that.

“From what I've seen around the grounds, it's the same. So, I think, all in all, the types are good, and I think, hopefully, we can see that in the sales ring results as well.”

With the sale shifted to a later position in the week, Watson said inspection levels have remained strong despite a quieter on-course presence.

“It's very hard to do an exact comparison to previous years since we were on some different days this year, being a Thursday and Friday sale. But looking at generally cards and inspections overall, we're exactly on par to last year, so we're very happy. There's less people on the complex because it's not over a weekend, but everybody here is a genuine buyer. We're happy to see it as busy as it is.”

The sale gets underway at 10am (ACDT).

Morning Briefing

Warwoven ready for Slipper

Warwoven (Credit: Sportpix)

Last weekend’s Pago Pago Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) winner Warwoven (Sword Of State) is ready for Saturday’s Golden Slipper Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) at Rosehill, with his trainer Bjorn Baker confident the forecast rain will only strengthen his chances in the Group 1. The colt, who has barrier 14, was a $7 chance on Wednesday, while stablemate and pre-draw equal favourite Paradoxium (Extreme Choice) had eased to $8 after coming up with gate 18. Baker believes both are still on an upward spiral and says their respective ability to bounce back from different setbacks suffered during halted Magic Millions campaigns in Queensland underscores their toughness. "Both colts have got a great constitution and very good attitudes, so that gives you a bit of encouragement," the trainer said. "They've both been on the way up, so if anything, the back-up could work to our advantage, especially if there is a little bit of rain around and the track does get demanding. Maybe that would tip me towards Warwoven." Rachel King partners Warwoven and if successful, she will become the first female jockey to win the world's richest juvenile race. The youngster will have the addition of blinkers for the first time to help his cause, Baker hoping they can offer a winning edge. "He has worked in them previously and has gone very well so we thought, Saturday is the day to do it," he said. "It's a bit of a risky move, but he's drawn out a touch.”

Observer ripe for Sydney debut

Dual Group 1 winner Observer (Ghaiyyath) will have his first try on the Sydney leg when he takes his chance in Saturday's Rosehill Guineas (Gr 1, 2000m). The Ciaron Maher-trained colt heads into the race off a dominant performance in the Australian Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m), his second win in elite-company, following up his victory in the VRC Derby (Gr 1, 2500m) last November. Maher said the three-year-old has impressed in his work in the Sydney direction ahead of the weekend’s Group 1. "I wanted to get him up there early and do a couple of nice little pieces of work and he worked like a horse that has had a lot of experience up there," the trainer said from Caulfield on Tuesday morning. "He came through his Guineas win very well. He's travelled up, he did a nice piece of work last week that was quite impressive and this morning just cantered around on the bit. He didn't have to do a lot and you would think he's only going to improve by getting back up to ten furlongs [2000 metres]."

Charm Stone attempts third Group 1 win

Co-trainer Mick Price is under no illusions of the task facing Charm Stone (I Am Invincible) in this weekend’s William Reid Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) at Caulfield. The three-time Group 1 winner will clash with fellow talented performers Jimmysstar (Per Incanto) and Angel Capital (Harry Angel), but despite the packed field Price is confident Charm Stone is in good shape ahead of the race. A trip to Caulfield for a gallop between races brought the mare on as has two jump-outs, the most recent at Cranbourne on March 9. "She took a bit out of that gallop and what we have done, she has needed," Price, who trains in partnership with Michael Kent Jnr, said. "She did not do any pre-training. She came straight to us. She had a bit of 'pudding' on her, and she's needed some gallops, but she hasn't put a foot wrong. She's had a brilliant prep, she goes good fresh and she's reasonably fit and if the race sets up well for her, she should be around the money as she will take a forward position and take luck out of the equation. In the Manikato, she was up there. She's been springing the gates really well and I would expect her to again bounce and put herself there. She's had a good prep. She's a very happy mare."

Ranvet timing spot-on for Sir Delius

The Ranvet Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m) is being billed as a match race between Aeliana (Castelvecchio) and Sir Delius (Frankel), whose co-trainer Adrian Bott is banking on a three-week break between runs to have him up for the fight. The Tulloch Lodge gelding was favourite for the Cox Plate (Gr 1, 2040m) and Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) last spring before he was controversially ruled out of the Victorian carnival after failing mandatory veterinary tests. His third behind Autumn Glow (The Autumn Sun) and Aeliana in the Verry Elleegant Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) on February 28 was his first appearance in almost five months and Bott reported the horse had taken significant benefit from the hit-out. "Three weeks, it has been that real sweet spot to get him to where we need him to be stepping out to 2000," Bott, who trains in partnership with Gai Waterhouse, said. "He is out to his right trip now, and he has shown the necessary improvement. I'm ready to see him bounce back."

Charlton granted an interim trainer's licence

Racing NSW has granted an interim trainer’s licence to Tom Charlton following the four month disqualification of co-trainer John O’Shea. The acceptances from the stable for Saturday's meeting at Rosehill will come under Charlton's name.

Linebacker and Yorkshire set for Autumn Glow clash

Tom Charlton will send out his horses in his own right on Saturday and he will rely on Linebacker (Super Seth) and Yorkshire (Snitzel) in the George Ryder Stakes (Gr 1, 1500m). The duo will clash with Chris Waller’s superstar filly Autumn Glow and Charlton has admitted his pair are most likely vying for place money. "I can't be definitive with that, but if she's on her normal game, it probably is," he said. "As we know with horses, that's not always the case, but we're realistic about the challenge at set weights. Perhaps if we meet her in the Doncaster we might have more favourable conditions to give us our best chance of beating her." Linebacker and Yorkshire drop to 53 kilograms in next month's Doncaster Mile (Gr 1, 1600m) in which Autumn Glow has been handicapped at 56.5 kilograms, representing a 6.5 kilograms swing in the weights. All roads lead to the feature for both geldings, and Charlton expects another encouraging performance from Linebacker on Saturday after he was beaten just one and a half lengths by Joliestar (Zoustar) on resumption in the Canterbury Stakes (Gr 1, 1300m). "He didn't jump as well as he can. He ended up a bit further back in what was a dash home," the trainer said. "But all-in-all, it was a very good run. A run with a lot of merit and if he'd got the first hundred metres a bit more clinical, he would have been right in the finish. We want to see a similar run second-up. Top three would be great."

Wide drawn conundrum for Generosity

Chris Waller's good fortune at the Golden Slipper barrier draw hasn't extended to the The Galaxy (Gr 1, 1100m) with his sole runner, Generosity (Divine Prophet), poised to jump from the widest gate. With first reserve Catch The Glory (Zousain) the only horse drawn wider, Generosity will start from the outside alley in 14 if the emergencies don't run. Six of the past 20 winners of The Galaxy have drawn double-figure alleys, although only one, Russian Revolution (Snitzel) in 2017, scored from barrier 14. Generosity will have the advantage of champion jockey James McDonald, and she heads into Saturday's feature sprint in winning form after edging out last year's Golden Slipper winner Marhoona (Snitzel) on resumption in the Challenge Stakes (Gr 2, 1000m). The five-year-old started a $10 chance that day, but while she snuck under the guard of most punters, Waller was not surprised. "No. We picked the race and then chose not to run in other races, so it was good to see the result," the trainer said "She has promised a good win. She has been unlucky in some good races, so when she got out in clear air, it was good to see her do it."

Alpha Sofie out to rebound at Caulfield

Alpha Sofie (Credit: Racing Photos)

Peter Moody is confident Alpha Sofie (Capitalist) can rebound when she heads to Caulfield for a stakes race on Saturday. The three-year-old dented her perfect record for Moody and Katherine Coleman when she failed to make an impact in the $1 million Inglis Sprint (1200m) at Flemington on February 28. After going over the mare from top to bottom, Moody is confident Alpha Sofie is right to head back to the races again and she will contest the Don Casboult Classic (Gr 3, 1200m). After starting her career in Queensland and being successful in her final two starts for Jason Edwards, Alpha Sofie made an immediate impact for Moody and Coleman winning the Atlantic Jewel Stakes (Listed, 1200m) at Moonee Valley last spring. Turned out for a spell after that victory, Alpha Sofie resumed with a solid Caulfield victory on February 7 in the Peter Le Grand Stakes (Gr 3, 1100m) before her poor performance up the straight at Flemington. "She's flying," Moody said. "She just got a bump at the start the other day and then pulled her head off, which she's never done before. That was down the straight for the first time for her. She charged and got lost." Moody has enough confidence in the filly that the Robert Sangster Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) at Morphettville late next month has been pencilled in Alpha Sofie. "Hopefully this run will set her up to go to Adelaide for the Sangster," the trainer said. "That was where she was going the other day if she had won, so she can have this one to get her back on track."

Better things to come for Savitri

Ballarat-based trainer Mitch Freedman has hopes that Savitri (So You Think) will one day go to stakes company, but for the time being will refrain from raising the bar too high. However, with three-year-old filly stakes race options interstate in coming months, Freedman may consider traveling with Savitri after her victory in the Benchmark 66 (1500m) at Caulfield Heath on Wednesday. Savitri registered her second win at start number four and looks to have a successful career ahead, but Freedman said the filly requires more action to learn what racing is about. A heavily backed $2.50 favourite under John Allen, Savitri scored by a length from Engine Of War (Circus Maximus) with Loud Charlie (Prague) a length further away in third. "The problem is with her she is always full of energy," Freedman said. "She takes all her work at home like it's nothing and we can't seem to get on top of her. I'm sure in time, with racing, and that extended work, she will come back underneath herself and race a lot better. We've still got good enough hopes for her, but we'll see how she comes through today before deciding what we do with her next." While a race like the Australasian Oaks (Gr 1, 2000m) at Morphettville next month may come around too soon, Freedman said a trip to Adelaide for the Auraria Stakes (Gr 3, 1800m) at that track on April 11 may also be considered for the filly.

Good Show tops Magic Millions Digital Sale

Lightly raced three-year-old Good Show (Trapeze Artist) was the top seller of the Magic Millions Digital Sale which concluded on Wednesday. A gelded son of Trapeze Artist (Snitzel), Good Show has placed from just two starts for the Peters Investments team who offered him in this week's sale. Good Show is set to join the stables of Western Australian horseman Dylan Bairstow after his team secured him for $37,500. The Peters Investments team was thrilled with the price and their good success with the Magic Millions Digital platform has continued following other recent strong results. "We had a reserve of $5,000 on him hoping he would make $10,000 to $15,000," Liam Peters said. "The price he achieved far exceeded our expectations. Entries for the Magic Millions Digital (27 March-1 April) Sale are open and will close next Wednesday, March 25.

Group 1 goals for Summer Schemer

Summer Schemer (Dirty Work) will have the opportunity to press her claims for a crack at an upcoming elite-level prize when she takes her chance in the opening contest over 1200 metres at Pukekohe on Friday. Trained by Shaune Ritchie and Colm Murray, the promising filly will line up off the back of an impressive debut victory with connections keen to then raise the bar with the youngster. “If she runs well, she’ll go on to the Manawatu Sires’ Produce Stakes, but she would obviously need to win or be unlucky not to win and come through the race well to justify her spot,” Ritchie said. Summer Schemer showed her class and tenacity last month to win at the first time of asking at Ellerslie under Craig Grylls, who will partner the daughter of Dirty Work (Written Tycoon) again at Pukekohe. “The form behind her is outstanding, the second horse [State Of Valour] ran third in the Sistema and the third horse [Seize The Day] has come out and won a maiden well,” Ritchie said. “We presented her in very big order for her first start and she has tightened right up. She looks like a real racehorse now.”

Change of scenery put to the test with Habana

Habana (Credit: Trish Dunell)

Habana (Zoustar) is set to have his first start for Waiuku-based trainers Moira and Kieran Murdoch in an Open Handicap (1400m) at Pukekohe on Friday. Originally trained by Tony Pike, the seven-year-old has won eight times, six of those victories coming under the care of Lance Noble, headed by the Rich Hill Mile (Gr 2, 1600m) in 2024. That race was in fact the gelding’s last win and even though he has shown glimpses of form since, there’s been something missing. “He had a bout of colic which required surgery and while we haven’t been able to put the finger on it, it seems he hasn’t quite been the same since,” Moira Murdoch said. “Lance and I talked about it and he said ‘Let’s just give him a change of scenery and see if that works’. He’s a lovely horse, an absolute gentleman, and his work since coming here has been good, he’s had no trouble fitting in. We gave him a trial at Avondale last week and he went well enough just in behind the placegetters. Warren [Kennedy] rode him and said he felt happy and comfortable, but the acid test will be when the pressure comes on under raceday conditions.”

Doctor Askar to join Chris Waller

A busy time on-farm and a lack of suitable races has prompted Waverley-based trainer Joanne Moss to send her stable star Doctor Askar (Derryn) across the Tasman to join Chris Waller. The five-year-old gelding has won seven of his 22 starts, with a further seven placings, with the Thorndon Mile (Gr 2, 1600m) victory in January a career highlight to date.
Doctor Askar is the sole horse in training for Moss, who along with partner Isaac Lupton, operates a dairy farm in South Taranaki alongside their horse interests. “Isaac broke his leg recently and that kind of triggered a few things,” Moss said. “We were getting busier on the farm and there weren't really many races left for him here in New Zealand this season. He's going over to Chris Waller and we will just see how he goes. If he doesn't measure up, he'll just have to come home and if he goes well, then he might get to stay a little bit longer.” Doctor Askar signed off his New Zealand campaign with a sixth placing behind Legarto (Proisir) in the Bonecrusher New Zealand Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m) on Champions Day.

HK: Eustace ticks off an early-career target as he sends two to the Derby

David Eustace is set to be doubly represented in Sunday’s Hong Kong Derby (Listed, 2000m) at Sha Tin in the shape of Dazzling Fit (Ribchester) and Seraph Gabriel (Saxon Warrior). This season’s running of the showpiece contest is expected to be one of the most open in years, a view underlined by the fact that Eustace’s two runners are each viewed as solid place chances despite Dazzling Fit having never having raced over the Derby distance, and Seraph Gabriel recently finishing 12th in his first Hong Kong run at 2000 metres. “I wouldn’t say everything’s gone right with each horse this season,” the trainer said, “but enough has for them to get there. So, they genuinely go there in as good a form as they can be in, and I just hope we get a nice draw. I think they’ll both be little each-way chances in what I think is a really wide open race. For us as a stable, it’s really exciting.”

HK: Ng confident Sagacious Life can bounce back in Derby

Pierre Ng is keeping the faith when Sagacious Life (Put It Back) contests Sunday’s Hong Kong Derby. After awkwardly covering ground from an outside draw when fourth in the Hong Kong Classic Mile (Listed, 1600m) before failing to fire a shot in the Hong Kong Classic Cup (Listed, 1800m) last start on March 1, Sagacious Life is aiming to bounce back to the sort of form that saw him win two Class 2s in his first three Hong Kong starts. Ng said: “Since the Classic Cup, he’s pulled up well. He had a very unlucky run last start, so we gave him a trial at Happy Valley last Saturday. He did everything right; Karis [Teetan] is happy with him and he’s been doing most of his work. We’re pretty much ready for Sunday and let’s see what we draw.”

MYS: Riordan lands riding opportunity

Liam Riordan will head to Malaysia at the end of the month where he is set to ride for trainer HY Cheng, who sits sixth in the local premiership, at Selangor on March 28 and 29. “I got introduced to HY through a good friend. He [Cheng] was very prominent at this year’s sales,” Riordan told Racing.com. “I’ve made it clear to a lot of friends of mine that I’m keen to grab any opportunity to ride overseas that comes my way. I did that in New Zealand with success a couple of years ago; I went over there for Te Akau and that was good. This opportunity came up, just to go for the weekend and ride, and I took it with both hands.” Riordan, who is in the Top 20 in the Victorian jockeys’ standings, with 42 wins for the season, will head to Malaysia with an open mind. He hasn’t given much thought to the possibility of returning on a permanent basis. “I’m going to go and see what happens, I know they’re pretty keen to get me over there [more permanently],” he said. “At this point, I’m just going over to ride for that weekend. We’ll see how things go and then work it out from there.”

ANZ News

A day at Sha Tin in 2013 and strong memories of a grey Tasmanian mare are the plotlines behind breeder David Brideoake’s creation of Salty Pearl (Tagaloa), who claimed another major victory in Saturday’s $500,000 VOBIS Platinum Guineas (1600m) at Caulfield.

Ciaron Maher’s three-year-old filly was already one of the large handful of stakes winners bred by Brideoake - the retired trainer who now concentrates on his breeding hobby - having taken the Moonee Valley Fillies Classic (Gr 2, 1600m) last Cox Plate day. More black type victories look likely in her future.

The latest of eight straight greys dating back to 1941 in her female line, Salty Pearl is from the first crop of young Yulong stallion Tagaloa (Lord Kanaloa), and counts as his top performer just ahead of another 2022 filly in Spicy Lu, the sire’s other stakes winner among 72 runners.

Brideoake is a fan of the Blue Diamond Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) as a proving ground for stallions, hence his respect for Tagaloa, who won Caulfield’s two-year-old feature in 2020.

But behind that lies his admiration for Tagaloa’s Japanese sire Lord Kanaloa (King Kamehameha).

Already with a healthy respect for the Japanese breed, Brideoake was trackside at Hong Kong’s international day in 2013 when Lord Kanaloa - who the year before had become the first Japanese horse to win the Hong Kong Sprint (Gr 1, 1200m) - defended his title in emphatic style, with a five-length win.

I was there to see Lord Kanaloa win his second Hong Kong Sprint, and it was just one of the most awesome wins I’ve ever seen

David Brideoake

“I’ve had some good clients in Hong Kong over the years, and I go up regularly for the international meeting,” Brideoake tells It’s In The Blood.

“I was there to see Lord Kanaloa win his second Hong Kong Sprint, and it was just one of the most awesome wins I’ve ever seen. He just blew them away. To be honest, it made me a little envious of how fast horses can be.”

Brideoake did a lot of breeding alongside his several decades of training.

He bred and trained Griante (Good Journey), who won the 2016 running of The Galaxy (Gr 1, 1100m) at Rosehill to become one of her sire’s only eight Australian stakes winners from 18 crops here. She was also one of three elite-level winners for her trainer, along with another runner by Good Journey in Grand Journey, winner of the West Australian Derby (Gr 1, 2400m) in 2008, and Australasian Oaks (Gr 1, 2000m) queen Princess Jenni (High Chaparral).

Brideoake also bred and trained Self Sense (Street Sense), who won almost $1.5 million in prize-money from 15 career wins - three at stakes level - and Melbourne Group 3-winning mare Thames Court (Commands).

The now 70-year-old eased out of training in the middle of last year, with his operations in that field being absorbed by his daughter Kate and son-in-law Matt Laurie, and is “having fun” dabbling with the three broodmares he keeps at son Tom’s property near Euroa.

In 2019, Brideoake was looking to add to his breeding stock and sniffed out the mare Leaven Of Malice (Sebring), picking her up from the draft of HP Thoroughbreds at the Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale.

A $170,000 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale buy for trainer Paul Perry, she showed great promise in winning by 0.2 lengths on debut at Muswellbrook. But that was all she wrote in 15 starts.

Brideoake acquired her for $14,000 - something of a bargain, especially considering she was in-foal to Japanese shuttler Real Impact (Deep Impact) at the time. Leaven Of Malice ended up slipping that pregnancy, but the lost foal and the moderate track record mattered little to Brideoake.

“She didn’t have the bells and whistles of the typical mares who go through the Gold Coast sale,” Brideoake says. “In no way was she a commercial sort of mare, and that’s been reflected in the prices her yearlings have made. But she was a mare that I liked.

“There’s lots of theories but you’ve just got to go with what you think.

“She had a bit of 1000-metre form and she was by Sebring, and I liked him as a broodmare sire. It’s one of those stories where you take a punt on what I thought was a physically nice specimen. I’d also been a fan of her dam.”

That mare, Tempest Tost (Statue Of Liberty), was by a sire who left only 13 stakes winners from a dozen seasons of shuttling to Australia, although one of them was the desperately unlucky Hay List, who managed three Group 1 wins on the days Black Caviar (Bel Esprit) wasn’t around, to become Statue Of Liberty’s sole elite-level victor.

Tempest Tost kicked off with a second and a win in Hobart, good enough for the rest of her 13 starts to be conducted outside of Tasmania. They included victories at Flemington and Caulfield and, most importantly, in the rich Magic Millions 3YO Trophy (RL, 1400m) of 2009. She also ran fourth in Eagle Farm’s Winter Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m), now the Tatts Tiara.

“I’d been quite a fan of Tempest Tost. She was a really decent racehorse,” Brideoake says. “I saw her race in person quite a few times, including that win at the Gold Coast, and she was a Tassie mare who came across and made the grade pretty well.”

Coincidentally, Tempest Tost went through that same Gold Coast broodmare sale as Leaven Of Malice, for $42,500. The judgment of her buyer - WPN Bloodstock - and of Brideoake was swiftly and strongly validated in the following ten months by her daughter Mildred (Hinchinbrook). Graham Begg’s filly won Flemington’s Maribyrnong Trial Stakes (Listed, 1000m) and Caulfield’s Chairman’s Stakes (Gr 3, 1000m). Mildred then ran third in Randwick’s Reisling Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) before an unplaced run in the Golden Slipper (Gr 1, 1200m).

There was strong blood in the family besides. Tempest Tost was a half-sister to two stakes winners headed by Notoire (Export Price), a five-time black type victor including of the VRC Salinger Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m).

Tempest Tost is also a half-sister to two stakes-producing mares.

Happy with his new mare’s page, and her physical presentation, Brideoake sent Leaven Of Malice to Ilovethiscity (Magic Albert) in 2019, but the mare missed. After returning to him the following year she threw Stormy Malice, who was no success story.

But Brideoake’s next try, with first-season sire Tagaloa, has succeeded in fine style in the shape of Salty Pearl, even if she didn’t make a million as a yearling. A $75,000 Inglis Classic purchase for Maher and Starblue Consultancy, she’s now won three of 12, with seven minor placings, for $886,000 in prize-money earnings.

“Tagaloa was a nice big strapping strong horse, and I thought it would put a bit of size and substance into this Sebring mare, and it worked out pretty well,” Brideoake says.

Tagaloa - who came to Australia in utero via his Japanese dam Vasilissa (Heart’s Cry) - now has ten stakes horses from 72 runners. Two of his runners have come fourth at the top level: Salty Pearl, in Caulfield’s Thousand Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m), and Tambeloa, in the ATC Spring Champion Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m).

I’m a fan of the Japanese horses. They’ve been a pretty damn good influence on the breed here in Australia

David Brideoake

Brideoake was impressed by the stallion’s grinding 0.2-length Blue Diamond win after racing on the pace in the Japanese style. He followed with a meritorious fourth in the Golden Slipper, won by Farnan (Not A Single Doubt), and was able to train on for another win at three in Flemington’s CS Hayes Stakes (Gr 3, 1400m).

“A few of these Tagaloas are popping up. I think he’s not a bad horse really,” he says.

“I’m a fan of the Japanese horses. They’ve been a pretty damn good influence on the breed here in Australia, I reckon.

“They’re tough. It’s on-speed racing in Japan, and it’s on pretty firm ground, a bit similar to ours.

“I’ve had a bit of luck with Japanese stallions over the years, and in this case I liked the speed of Lord Kanaloa, and Tagaloa was a good horse to win the Blue Diamond.

“I do read a bit into the Blue Diamond form. It takes a decent horse to win that race. In Melbourne, we’re used to getting them ready on fairly firm ground over the summer before that race. Horses who get through there are extremely sound and are good up and comers, and good early goers.”

Meanwhile, Sebring, who died aged 13 in 2019, is making strides as a broodmare sire. He’s risen to a personal high of 18th on that table in Australia this season - but equal ninth by stakes winners (five) - with Salty Pearl his best performer.

Putting his daughter Leaven Of Malice to Tagaloa threw up two pieces of interesting inbreeding in a largely foreign pedigree heavy on American influence, and of course with strong Japanese notes.

Storm Cat (Storm Bird) - sire of Giant’s Causeway, Hennessy, Black Minnaloushe etc - is there gender balanced at 4f x 4m in handy places, as Lord Kanaloa’s damsire and the father of Statue Of Liberty.

Another US-bred stallion - Halo (Hail To Reason) - is present at 5m x 5m, as Heart’s Cry’s second sire and Sebring’s third.

And an even more influential American - Mr. Prospector (Raise A Native) - is at 5m x 6m, 6f. He’s Tagaloa’s fourth sire, and comes into both sides of Sebring’s pedigree.

Two great American dams have had an influence, with Somethingroyal (Princequillo) there twice in the top half and three times in the bottom from columns seven to nine, through three different offspring, and Flower Bowl (Alibhai) making three appearances at 9m, 7m x 8m, through two sons.

The ever-present Natalma (Native Dancer) is the most repeated mare in the pedigree with 12 mentions, while Nearco (Pharos) holds the male title with 18 spots, two more than Native Dancer (Polynesian).

Brideoake bred a third grey filly out of Leaven Of Malice in She’s Iconnic (Nicconi), a $54,000 Magic Millions Adelaide yearling whose only run so far has been a seventh in Morphettville’s Cinderella Stakes (Listed, 1050m) in February for Jessica Eaton.

That’s the end of Leaven Of Malice’s line, with the mare sadly dying around the birth of her subsequent foal in 2024.

Brideoake will be hoping for more success as a breeder on day two of this year’s Adelaide sale on Friday. Through the draft of Sullivan Bloodstock, he’s offering Lot 387, a colt by Tassort (Brazen Beau) out of Ominous Quality (Elusive Quality), and Lot 395, a colt by Blue Point (Shamardal) out of the stakes-winning Pantenny (Canny Lad).
