Economic pressures felt at the lower-end of the Adelaide Yearling Sale market

The challenging times at the lower end of the yearling market came to fore at the Magic Millions Adelaide Yearling Sale, with all the key metrics from the two-day sale down on last year’s corresponding edition.

At the close of trade, figures told the tale of a challenging few days for vendors. All told, 269 horses sold at a clearance of 76 per cent, while the aggregate dropped 26 per cent year-on-year to $10,578,500. The average also struggled, falling 20 per cent to $39,325, while the median closed at $30,000, a 7.5 per cent dip on last year’s figure.

What's On

The company’s managing director Barry Bowditch said economic factors both inside and outside the industry meant that yearlings, particularly at the lower-end, struggled to measure up in the sales ring.

“This is where it starts and it's an important part of the ecosystem and it's getting tougher at that end,” he told ANZ News. “If you've got a quality horse, it doesn't matter where you offer it, you'll get paid well, and that was evident over the last two days. But if you've got a horse that's off the pace or it's not what the market's looking for, it's tough out there.

“When you look at the climate, whether it be interest rates or fuel prices or everything in between, at the bottom end, it's affecting people, and that's evident at that lower end more than anywhere.

“I think from a clearance rate perspective picked up today. I think the better horses on the whole landed yesterday, so obviously the average was always going to come back to a clog. It's disappointing it's come back a good amount off last year, but effectively this is the grassroots of the industry.

“A sale like this or like we had last week, you've got more of those horses in the catalogue - they need to be sold or need to be offered somewhere and it's tough for those horses. But, I thought when a good colt or filly, in particular a good colt, walked in the ring, if it vetted out well, there was a fantastic thirst for those horses and they sold very well.

"There's a craving for quality and some accountability has to be made on the leading breeders in the state to support the sale and give it real impetus that the market has to come to Adelaide - to support the local sale with quality horses.

"This is the coal face of our industry. There's a lack of confidence at the lower end and the reality is, it's tough out there - whether it's fuel prices, interest rates.

"We will continue to work with our vendors to get a good quality of horse here. When you look through the results and speak to a number of the vendors, who I have spoken to over the last two days, many are delighted with the results and pleasantly surprised with the depth and support on many horses," Bowditch added.

"We are in Adelaide for the long haul. We are not going anywhere and we are looking forward to next year's sales and many years into the future."

Bowditch also pointed to the compressed sales calendar as a contributing factor.

“I think buyers or trainers or agents, they've all got their own businesses to run, which obviously sales are an important part of that. But the wall-to-wall sales, basically each week since January, there's been an auction or an inspection day or something going on,” he said.

“Since the 8th or 10th of January until now, It's been a really busy time. Buyers are out there being sensible about things and they're still selling down the stock that they've bought at all the sales this year. That's an important part of what they do and they need time to do so.

“I think next year, there will be a little bit more space there, a week or two. We'll look at what fits the calendar best for a sale like this and a sale like March, and see if we can give the market a little bit more room if it's possible. And we'll obviously talk to our sellers and see what they think is the best way to go with that.

“From our perspective, I'd like to think the local breeders here should have confidence that if they leave premium horses here in the state, they'll get paid just as well as what they would anywhere else.

“I think there's plenty of horses here that came from interstate breeders as well that actually sold better here than what they would have at any other sale so we've got to do our best to give the South Australian breeders confidence that if they've got good, solid middle market product, this is the place to keep it.”

The sale concluded with six yearlings selling for $100,000 or more, and trade was spearheaded by a Tassort (Brazen Beau) colt from Sullivan Bloodstock who was snapped up by Trilogy Racing and agent Suman Hedge for $120,000.

Bred by David Brideoake, the youngster is the sixth foal from four-time winner Ominous Quality (Elusive Quality), who finished fourth at Listed level. She is the dam of four to race for two winners, while the colt’s granddam is Group 2 winner and Group 1 placegetter Noircir (Bureaucracy).

Sullivan Bloodstock’s Sherah Sullivan was pleased with the result.

“He is a lovely colt,” she told ANZ News. “We had actually handpicked him to come here, just because there were a few Tassorts in other sales, and we just thought he'd stand out really well here, which he has. He has gone to a great judge and we're delighted with the price, he was a beautiful horse.”

Despite the challenging conditions, Sullivan enjoyed a strong clearance rate across her draft.

“It has been sticky, everyone is aware of that, but we have sold 100 per cent today,” she added. “I guess we've just got them on the market and we are sellers and people know that. So it's helped and we're happy with today. We're wrapped with that result, it is excellent.”

Hedge was similarly taken by the colt’s physical attributes.

“He's just a gorgeous horse,” Hedge told ANZ News. “Quite a striking type and he was very hard to miss. He is a terrific mover, has great balance, athleticism and a great temperament. We had him out multiple times and he never turned a hair - so a lot of the key characteristics that we look for from an athletic requirement. He also had a very good cardio and we place a bit of importance and things like that. So I'm happy to purchase it for Trilogy Racing.”

Hedge said a trainer for the colt would be decided in due course.

“I think the stable will be determined a little bit later. We'll just let the dust settle, get him broken in, and Jason and the team will come together and make a decision as to where he heads,” he added.

Active throughout the sale, Hedge, alongside his various clients, signed for ten lots for a combined spend of $617,000 and acknowledged the difficulties faced by vendors.

“I feel a little bit for the vendors here - Magic Millions have done a great job, they've assembled a good catalogue,” he said. “There was enough to buy, but a lot of people weren't here for varying reasons.

“I think there's probably the timing of it with what's happening in the world at the moment, fuel and inflation and stuff like that, and a little bit of sales fatigue as well. There's probably all been a bit of a perfect storm and that's what we've seen here.

“But I absolutely love this sale, so I just think it's a bit of a blip on the map and it'll bounce back again next year. We love coming here.”

Magic Millions will now turn its attention to the National Yearling, Weanling and Broodmare Sale on the Gold Coast from May 24 to June 2.

“Obviously it's a busy time taking entries,” Bowditch said. “We are really excited by some of the outstanding race fillies and broodmares that we've got to offer. There's some real highlights which we're excited about and our weanling sale is coming together. We've got some big drafts from particular vendors and obviously entries are still open and we look forward to marketing that catalogue from late April.”

27 for Foxwedge

Woodside Park stallion Foxwedge (Fastnet Rock) sired his 27th individual stakes winner on Friday when Bianco Vilano (7 g ex Cap Bianco by Falvelon) landed the Albury Gold Cup (Listed, 2000m) at Albury. Ridden by Tyler Schiller for trainer Ron Stubbs, the seven-year-old gelding defeated Plymouth (The Autumn Sun) by 1.7 lengths with a further 0.5 lengths back to Blazing Sword (Too Darn Hot) in third place. Bianco Vilano is a brother to winner Baledon being one of only two foals out of the winning Falvelon (Alannon) mare Cap Bianco, who was bred by Derby-winning trainer Gordon Yorke. Foxwedge stood the 2025 breeding season at a fee of $9,900 (inc GST).

Catalogue for Inglis Digital March Online Sale now open

Half Yours (Credit: Racing Photos)

Strong drafts from Godolphin and Halo Racing – which provided last year’s Caulfield Cup (Gr 1, 2400m) and Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) winner Half Yours (St Jean) in its most recent significant Inglis Digital reduction – headline an exciting catalogue for the March (Late) Online Sale.

A total of 33 lots will be offered by Halo Racing featuring shares, broodmares, racehorses and yearlings. When Halo Racing’s Colin McKenna died in November 2024, his wife Janice offered an unreserved reduction on Inglis Digital, a draft which included Half Yours as well as a five per cent share in Light Infantry Man (Fast Company), who would go on to win the Australian Cup (Gr 1, 2000m) and Northerly Stakes (Gr 1, 1800m) post-selling.

The 16-strong Godolphin draft features racehorses and race fillies that will be sure to attract attention from a broad range of prospective buyers.

Recent Inglis Digital drafts from Godolphin have included subsequent stakes winners Sandpaper (Snitzel) and Barber (Exceed And Excel) as well as Hong Kong winner Pegas (Encryption).

There is also a reduction from Bert Vieira featuring mares in foal to Trapeze Artist (Snitzel) - second only to his father for Australian stakes winners this season and whose recent progeny include exciting juvenile Group winners Spicy Miss and Chilly Girl plus Group 3 winner Pinito – while another entry of significance is the broodmare Kamea (Sebring).

Kamea is a half-sister to recent Newmarket Handicap (Gr 1, 1200m) winner Caballus (I Am Invincible) and is offered in foal to popular young stallion Tassort (Brazen Beau).

In total the March (Late) Sale consists of 450 lots – 171 racehorses (73 race fillies), 150 broodmares, 78 racehorse shares, 37 yearlings, 13 weanlings and one breeding right.

The final countdown of bidding for the Inglis Digital March (Late) Online Sale begins from 10am on Wednesday. To view the catalogue, arrange finance or participate in the auction click here.

Maher and Darby bidding for Slipper win

Ciaron Maher is hoping he can land his first win in the Golden Slipper (Gr 1, 1200m) when Spicy Miss (Trapeze Artist) takes her chance in the Rosehill Group 1 on Saturday. The Darby Racing-owned filly has run inside the top two on all three of her starts, with second placings in the Golden Gift (1100m) and Lonhro Plate (Listed, 1000m) followed by a victory in the Sweet Embrace Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) last time out on February 28. "We did tell him [Maher] after the Sweet Embrace we could fix that for him [a win in the Slipper]," Scott Darby, director of syndicators Darby Racing, said. "I'm really happy for Ciaron to have a runner in it as well, and I think we're a really good show from that barrier [five]." Spicy Miss heads into Saturday's $5 million Golden Slipper off a three-week break between runs and has been drawn in barrier five, a gate that has produced two winners in the past 18 years – Lady Of Camelot (Written Tycoon) (2023) and Sebring (More Than Ready) (2008). "Not She Will Reign vibes, more Yankee Rose vibes," Darby said. "She's got a similar barrier and similar to Yankee Rose, she is very tough."

Baker to have five Group 1 hopefuls

Bjorn Baker will send out five runners in Group 1 contests on Saturday's Rosehill card. Golden Slipper hopefuls Warwoven (Sword Of State) and Paradoxium (Extreme Choice) will be joined by Pericles (Street Boss) in the George Ryder Stakes (Gr 1, 1500m), Stefi Magnetica (All Too Hard) in the Ranvet Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m), while Green Spaces (Street Boss) will line up in the Rosehill Guineas (Gr 1, 2000m). "Compared to the big stables and big bloodstock agents, we're at a much lower level in terms of numbers and quality, so to get two runners in the Golden Slipper is really a dream," Baker said. "It's very much about small steps to get into these races. Even when I came here [from New Zealand], you've got to start winning races and slowly building quality up. Two runners in the race suggest we're going in the right direction." Pericles will be taking on the unbeaten Autumn Glow (The Autumn Sun) in the George Ryder and, although conceding it is a tough task, Baker is not giving up hope of an upset. "You've got to back yourself. You're in the wrong game if you want to put the white flag up every time there is a superstar," Baker said. "If there is ever a horse that is capable of knocking off a superstar, it's Pericles. He's got an exceptional record." Doncaster Mile (Gr 1, 1600m) winner Stefi Magnetica will tackle a middle distance for the first time in the Ranvet after a seventh placing in the All-Star Mile (Gr 1, 1600m) last time up. "It was hard to get a line in Melbourne. It didn't work out, it was a very firm track, and second-up she can be a little bit vulnerable as well," Baker said. "It's going to be a tough race with Sir Delius and Aeliana and co, so she is going to need to get a good run in transit and have everything go her way, but she's in good order."

Group 3 option likely for Inkaruna

The Anthony and Sam Freedman-trained Inkaruna (I Am Invincible) is unlikely to get a run in Saturday's The Galaxy (Gr 1, 1100m), so the three-year-old filly is now more than likely to run in the Birthday Card Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) on the Rosehill undercard instead. A total of three scratchings are needed to come out of The Galaxy in order for Inkaruna to get a run in the Group 1, but the Group 3 seems more likely following a first-up second in the Fireball Stakes (Listed, 1100m) - a run that backed up a win in the Thoroughbred Club Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) in November. “We’d love to see her line up in the Group 1, it looks a good challenge for her, but if she doesn’t get in we’ll line up in the Birthday Card and that looks a nice consolation race,’’ Sam Freedman told Racing NSW. “She was really unlucky the other day, she looks in great form. She generally improves as she gets into her prep and she looks well placed. It was a nice first-up run albeit you’d love to have got the run and won the race but she had a nice soft first-up performance so she should have plenty in the tank.”

Dual William Reid challenge for Team Hawkes

Devil Night (Extreme Choice) and Airman (I Am Invincible) will chase honours in the final Melbourne Group 1 of the season for Team Hawkes on Saturday. The pair will line up in the William Reid Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) at Caulfield, with the latter bidding for a first win since landing the Premiere Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) at Randwick in October, 2024. "He won the Premiere Stakes which is two weeks before The Everest and which is the best lead-up race to The Everest," Wayne Hawkes said. "You know he is up to that class of race, but he hasn't won for 18 months, but I wouldn't discard him. He's going pretty well." Meanwhile, 2025 Blue Diamond Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) winner Devil Night is looking to score for the first time since that Group 1 success, but was a last-start second in the Zeditave Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m). "He's going super and this is the race we've picked out for him," Hawkes said. "He was getting beaten in the spring behind Giga Kick, which isn't bad for a three-year-old and Giga Kick is an Everest horse, and the bottom line is, there's your form. Beau Mertens had a sit on him in his trial and I'm happy with the horse and how he's going. He's the fitter one [of the two]."

Alister Clark for Planet Red

With Godolphin's classy operator Observer (Ghaiyyath) lining up in the Rosehill Guineas, the Mick Price and Michael Kent Jnr-trained Planet Red (Admire Mars) will get his opportunity to score in Saturday's Alister Clark Stakes (Gr 2, 2000m) at Caulfield. The son of Admire Mars (Daiwa Major) has finished second behind Observer on his last two starts in the Autumn Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m) and Australian Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m), and Price is pleased to see that rival head north of the border this weekend. "With all due respect to that very good horse Observer, he was unlucky in the Caulfield Guineas, but we ran second and Planet Red's two runs this time in have been dictated to by bad barriers," Price said. "First-up he was ridden cold and whooshed home very well and then in the Australian Guineas, it was the same thing. I couldn't work out how to ride him and watching the race unfold, I think it was the right thing to do. It's a different race on Saturday, different tempo, different barrier, and I think it will be a change of tactics. In a 2000-metre race when they sit up there will be no need for him to be too far away. He's a strong horse, with a good brain, but while he's a good size, he just doesn't have the muscle on him that I would like to see. He's done the work to run 2000 metres. He's fit, very sound and it's a nice race for him, but I don't think I will persevere too long this preparation because he's a growing horse on a good frame. I don't know if he's a true staying horse, but he's a nice miler, 2000-metre horse and I think he will come back as a nice four-year-old if we look after him. Hopefully he can go out on a winning note."

Ferivia to make first-up appearance

Pakenham-based trainer Phillip Stokes is hoping that Ferivia (Astern) can go on to Group 1 glory this year, beginning with a first-up run in the Don Casboult Classic (Gr 3, 1200m) at Caulfield on Saturday. The daughter of Astern (Lonhro) was last seen running sixth in the Thousand Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) at Casulfield on October 18 and was fifth in a 1000-metre trial at Caulfield Heath on February 25, finishing 2.5 lengths behind subsequent All-Star Mile winner Tom Kitten (Harry Angel). "She's jumped out really good going into this and I feel she's come back stronger, but I'm still not sure where her distance lies," Stokes said. "I know she's got good from 1200 to 1400 [metres], so we've just got to work out whether we go down a Sangster-Goodwood path, or aim at something else, but I couldn't be happier with how she is coming up. Before she even came over, she'd had a good preparation in Adelaide, but by the time she got to the Thousand Guineas she'd had enough. She still ran a creditable race, and the form has been franked. I think she is exciting."

O’Donnell hoping for Pinjarra Cup victory

Shaun O’Donnell is aiming to end a 13-year drought in Saturday's Pinjarra Cup (Listed, 2300m) when he gets aboard the Adam Durrant-trained Silver Eye (Sessions). The five-year-old gelding has won two of his last four starts, and was a last-start second in the Bunbury Cup (Listed, 2000m). O’Donnell’s sole win in the Pinjarra Cup came 13 years ago aboard the Bob Peters-owned Moonlight Bay (Catbird) back in 2013. “It was a huge run in the Bunbury Cup and the start before, I just tried to ride him for luck and it didn’t work … he should have won by panels,” O’Donnell told Racing WA. “With this horse, you’ve got to put him to sleep and he seems to go to sleep with me. If you’re not quiet on him early, he’ll just charge. I have drawn better [barrier eight] for the Pinjarra Cup, so hopefully I can be a few pairs closer and I reckon he’s a real good chance. I’d love to win it again on this horse and it’s been a fair effort by the team to get a 1000-metre specialist they couldn’t hold onto, to be running over staying trips. There aren’t too many top-weights who have won this race, but I think this horse can do it because he’s a big, strong, powerful boy.”

Patrick and Michelle Payne announce training partnership split

Brother-and-sister training partnership Patrick and Michelle Payne have announced their decision to split as of April 1. "We wish to inform you that Patrick and Michelle have decided to dissolve the current training partnership as of April 1st 2026," a statement from the pair read. "This has been a thoughtful decision made with the future in mind, and we are grateful for the support you have given us while training together. Michelle will be stepping back from the larger training operation to focus on a smaller team at home, working closer to her father and retaining a few horses in Ballarat. Patrick Payne Racing will continue as a full training operation, Patrick will remain in control of the horses at his current training property. Our priority is to make this transition as smooth and straightforward as possible for both owners and horses. Please contact us if any questions. Thank you sincerely for your ongoing support and trust in our stable."

Vale Robert Hall

Former trainer Robert Thomas Hall has died aged 81. Hall trained at Bathurst and was a leading trainer in the area for many years around the 1980s, preparing a host of talented horses notably Patent Black (Norwood Star). The filly was normally ridden by Dale Jeffries, who rode for Hall for around 20 years, and won at all four Sydney metro tracks in her day. Another of Hall's well-known horses was Golden Revenge (Coolness), a prolific Cups winner often ridden by Roy McCabe Snr, with many of his top gallopers owned by his brother John Hall who was a pharmacist at Bathurst. He was always a trainer who presented both his horses and himself very well.

Mount Isa to have Good Friday card

The Mount Isa Race Club will become the first track in Queensland to ever host a meeting on Good Friday. The Sunshine State will join Victoria, Western Australia, Tasmania and the Australian Capital Territory in running thoroughbred racing on Good Friday in 2026. Mount Isa’s Buchanan Park will host seven TAB races on the first Friday in April, with the meeting to be broadcast on Sky 2. “This is a fantastic opportunity for our club and the industry,” Mount Isa Race Club president Jay Morris told Racing Queensland. “It shows what’s possible when we think outside the box.” The opportunity to race on Good Friday was instigated following a change in programming this week. Racing Queensland have advised that the non-TAB race meeting scheduled for Boulia Turf Club on Saturday, April 4, was to be transferred to Mount Isa Race Club and will now be run on Friday, April 3, as a TAB meeting. “We are really glad through consultation with Racing Queensland that this meeting will be able to be broadcast on Sky 2,” Morris said.

Cairns meeting postponed

Racing Queensland have advised that the race meeting scheduled for the Cairns Jockey Club on Saturday, March 21 has been abandoned due to weather and state of the track, and has been transferred to Thursday, March 26. The schedule of races for the new meeting can be found here.

Return to Trentham fits with Waimea Bay

A return to Trentham on Saturday is expected to bring out the best in Waimea Bay (Savabeel) when she lines up in Saturday’s Wellington Guineas (Gr 2, 1600m). The Roger James and Robert Wellwood-trained filly’s career-high performance was two starts ago when a short-head second to stablemate Fairy Dream (Proisir) in the Desert Gold Stakes (Gr 3, 1600m) over the same 1600-metre trip at Trentham in mid-January. After a win and a third placing in her only two previous starts, she blotted her copybook when second-last in the Waikato Guineas (Gr 2, 2000m), fading over the final stages after being ridden forward from a wide gate to settle on the pace. “The Waikato Guineas result was disappointing but I couldn’t be happier with how she’s freshened and developed since,” James said. “She’s never been one to do a lot on the track, however in saying that her work has been more than adequate and after trotting her up before she got on the float this morning I’m confident she’s in the right order. The Te Akau filly [Origin Of Love] looks the one to beat but I’m confident that our filly is well up to the task too.”

International partnership roaring ahead

Roaring Bebe (Per Incanto) is the latest success story for Ben Foote in his ongoing association with Hong Kong trainer David Hall. The son of Per Incanto (Street Cry) will attempt to complete a hat-trick of wins when he heads south from his Cambridge base for the HGT Bloodstock Handicap (1400m) at Trentham on Saturday. “I’ve always had the horses David buys here, I educate, pre-train and trial them before they go over,” Foote, who trains in partnership with son Ryan, said. “The trial and race winners he buys also come here until they’re ready to send over and he’s sent a few back to us, Keegan [four wins] was one of them. This horse had a hock injury [in Hong Kong] and he took him a long time to get over it. David sent him back to us and said he can gallop, so definitely try him.” Hall’s advice has proved on the money with Roaring Bebe finishing runner-up at Ellerslie in his first start before reeling off victories at Te Rapa and New Plymouth ahead of his Trentham assignment. “His work’s been very good and we were planning to go for a mile the week after, it was Ryan’s idea to go 1400 metres again,” Foote said. “He’s a really good looking Per Incanto who had a few quirks when he first came here, he had a mind of his own, but he’s quite a neat horse now he’s in the right head space.”

HK: Numbers faces tempo test in Hong Kong Derby

Numbers (Tivaci) shapes as a leading contender in the Hong Kong Derby (Listed, 2000m) on Sunday but, despite being confident about his mount’s credentials, jockey Derek Leung warns that race tempo will be decisive. The Frankie Lor-trained gelding, who has two wins, a third and a fourth from four Hong Kong starts, is expected to be near the top of the betting when the starting gates open at Sha Tin. Already a Group 3 winner in Hong Kong after taking February’s Centenary Vase Handicap (Gr 3, 1800m) in commanding style, his merits were not seriously dented by a gallant fourth in the Hong Kong Classic Cup (Listed, 1800m). He jumped as the second favourite that day, though the blistering pace set by front-running Akashvani (Alpine Eagle) did not aid his cause. “He ran a fast tempo [in the Hong Kong Classic Cup], and it was not so simple for him,” said Leung, who has been on board for each of Numbers’ Hong Kong runs. “But now we know more about the horse and how good he is. So, we know how to judge the pace. I think it won’t be as quick as last time, and that, in this race, quite a few horses will try to be handy to get the good positions. So, the first turn will be the key.” Numbers has drawn barrier 13 for the Sunday showpiece. “The draw hasn’t helped him,” Leung said. “I will still try to go forward a little bit. There’s no doubt he can handle [2000 metres], and on Sunday, I’m sure he will run very well. Quite a few horses have a decent chance. But I think the main danger is the tempo."

HK: Cody Mo chases dream with Emblazon in Derby

No horse declared to run in the Hong Kong Derby has won more races this season than Emblazon (Zoustar), and trainer Cody Mo hopes his progressive galloper can fulfil a lifelong dream on Sunday afternoon at Sha Tin. Mo, who has 26 winners this season, is confident Emblazon is well placed for his stamina-testing jump to ten furlongs, which the 88-rater will make against 13 opponents, having raced exclusively over 1200 metres and 1400 metres across his initial eight starts. “I think for the worldwide industry – every owner, trainer, jockey and stable staff – the Derby is the most important race and it is a dream for us all. To have one in the race, I am grateful for that. But if I was to win, it would be a dream come true,” Mo said. Owned by the Military King’s Syndicate, Emblazon has made a sparkling ascent from a rating of 49 at the start of this season to reach his current peak, achieved on March 1 with a quality laden success in Class 2 – his debut in the grade – under Jerry Chau at Sha Tin. “I think he’s in top form right now, and his win last start was better than I thought. He’s been very consistent this season and he’s improved a lot,” Mo said. “He galloped yesterday [Wednesday] – he’s working well.”
