Rogers proud of his golden run with Roll The Dice

Guest House (Credit: Sportpix)

As the man who first identified the Guest House’s (Home Affairs) vast potential, Jeremy Rogers drew immense satisfaction from the colt’s Golden Slipper (Gr 1, 1200m) weekend success but the bloodstock agent is not resting on his laurels as he begins the exhaustive search for his next star at Inglis’ Riverside Stables sales complex this week.

Rogers has formed a formidable partnership with the Roll The Dice Racing syndicate by converting modestly priced yearlings into equine excellence, with Guest House the latest in a long line of astute purchases which also include fellow stakes winner turned Newgate stallion Profiteer (Capitalist) and Group 1 heroine Krone (Eurozone), who were acquired for a combined $285,000.

While the $270,000 Rogers, Roll The Dice and Mick Price Racing paid to secure their Slipper hero could not reasonably be categorised as a bargain basement buy, it is unlikely that fee will be enough to secure any of the seven Home Affairs (I Am Invincible) colts on offer at the Inglis Easter Sale, which gets underway on Sunday morning.

What's On

That won’t stop Rogers from at least trying to source the next Guest House, who is already the subject of a heavyweight tug-of-war with many seasoned observers putting his valuation as a stallion north of $25 million.

Given that he doesn’t own even a meagre share in Australia’s most exciting two-year-old, those sort of head-spinning figures are fairly academic to Rogers but his ability to source a savvy purchase certainly won’t harm his efforts to expand his existing client base.

The 50-year-old, who mixes his bloodstock business with his day job as Archie Alexander’s racing manager, had pegged Lot 402 at last year’s Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale as a $350,000 colt, so to secure him for $80,000 less than that was bordering on daylight robbery.

“I loved him from the very first time I saw him, I looked at him another three or four times and he just came out and did his job, so he was a real professional,” Rogers told ANZ News.

“He was a big strong colt with a beautiful action and a great brain, so I put two stars next to him in the catalogue. A good friend of mine, Guy Woods, was parading him for Newgate and he kept telling me what an amazing temperament he had. He really impressed me but I didn’t think we’d have enough money for him, to be honest.

“Home Affairs had such a big boom on him and the colt was out of a stakes-placed mare, so I thought there was no way in the world he would sell for under $300,000. We started bidding more in hope than expectation, so we were very lucky to get him for what I thought was a very fair price.”

Despite not investing any of his own hard-earned cash in the colt, Rogers was still kept abreast of the youngster’s progress and the early reports were nothing short of glowing.

Given that co-trainer Mick Price is renowned for his forthrightness – any owner with a horse in his care becomes accustomed to his straight-talking very quickly – the fact that the experienced horseman had nothing but praise for his young charge was perhaps prescient.

And so it proved, as Guest House shed his maiden status at the first time of asking and, following back-to-back placings in both the Blue Diamond Prelude (Gr 3, 1100m) and Blue Diamond Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m), he announced himself as the country’s best juvenile with an exhibition of unbridled power in last Saturday’s $5 million feature.

“All along Mick [Price] has really talked this colt up, he calls a spade a spade so you always know where you stand with him but you could tell he had such a big opinion of the horse,” said Rogers.

“Even though [stablemate] Big Sky was the favourite for the Blue Diamond before he was withdrawn, Mick said that if he could only keep one of the two, he’d choose Guest House every day of the week. So that gave everyone a fair bit of confidence and even though he didn’t win the Blue Diamond, he still ran very well and all the results heading into the Slipper suggested that the form would hold up.

“But I still didn’t expect him to win like that and it hasn’t really sunk in just yet, to be honest. The neighbours must’ve wondered what was happening when I was watching the race on the TV, there was that much screaming and some fairly colourful language. It all seemed so surreal, you dream of winning a Golden Slipper with a horse you’ve bought but you don’t expect those dreams to come true.”

Aware that with great success comes even greater expectation, Rogers is now tasked with buying another winning lottery ticket at this week’s Inglis Easter extravaganza at Warwick Farm.

With more than 450 lots to get through, inspections are a test of endurance as well as expertise but Rogers is nothing if not dedicated. After running the rule over Arrowfield’s draft first thing on Tuesday morning, he polished off a steak sandwich lunch in double quick time before continuing a process which should be close to completion by mid-afternoon on Thursday.

At that point, he will present his long list to Rob Norton, Leigh Saville and Steve Travaglia, the triumvirate of powerbrokers at Roll The Dice whose budget may have expanded following Saturday’s $2.95 million bonanza.

In fairness, the trio will need to open the shoulders – and wallet – if they are to leave the Riverside complex with any of the 14 Home Affairs progeny up for action.

“The stallion has been very good to me so far, so we’ll definitely be in the market from some of his stock but I would say they will be pretty expensive now,” Rogers told ANZ News.

“I haven’t caught up properly with the Roll The Dice Racing team because I think they’ve been out celebrating the last few days, so I’m not sure if their budget has gone up but we’ll go through what they can and can’t afford later in the week.

“We’ve built a great association, I’ve been working for them since 2017 but I suppose our success really started with Profiteer. Back then their budget was probably around $30,000 to $40,000 for a yearling, so they’ve come a long way since. They still don’t have really big money to spend because they want to get good value for money for their clients, but I think they made a conscious decision to buy some better-bred horses in recent years, and they’ve definitely been well rewarded for it.

“I remember driving to the Classic Sale in Sydney in 2020, I was talking to Steve on the phone and when I mentioned I really liked a Written Tycoon colt, he said I should bid on him even though I had him priced around $200,000. I nearly drove off the road, because I didn’t think they’d be in the market for a horse at that price.

“As it turns out we were the underbidders to Greg Hickmott on that colt, but the next day we did pick up a lovely Capitalist colt for $165,000, and he turned out to be Profiteer. The Written Tycoon didn’t turn out to be much good, whereas Profiteer ended up winning over $1.5 million in prize-money. Every time I see Greg I tell him I owe him a beer, I don’t think I’ve bought it for him but maybe I’ll do it this week.”

Morning Briefing

Australia

Dubai Honour in top shape for Tancred title defence

Dubai Honour (Credit: Sportpix)

The William Haggas-trained Dubai Honour (Pride Of Dubai) is reportedly in brilliant shape ahead of the defence of his Tancred Stakes (Gr 1, 2400m) title at Rosehill on Saturday.

This year marks the eight-year-old's third autumn carnival in Sydney and Haggas’ assistant trainer Issy Paul, who has travelled with the gelding each time, is satisfied the horse is as good as ever.

His most recent form reflects that, with a Group 1 placing behind Goliath (Adlerflug) in Germany in September, a Listed win in England two months later, and a second placing in the UK last time out in December when he shouldered 64 kilograms.

"I'm really happy with where he is. He is being a bit of a pain on the track, and that generally means he is in pretty good order," Paul said.

"He's in great form. He actually came down here a little bit heavy, and he has tightened up nicely in the last week or so.

"They did a good bit of work last week, and they will have a little stretch tomorrow [Wednesday]."

Dubai Honour and stable companion Caviar Heights (Sea The Stars) both galloped at Canterbury on Tuesday morning, rounding out the completion of their official quarantine period.

Dubai Honour will be chasing back-to-back wins in the Tancred Stakes on Saturday, while Caviar Heights makes his Australian debut in the Neville Sellwood Stakes (Gr 3, 2000m).

Paul confirmed jockey Tom Marquand, who has partnered Dubai Honour in three of his four Australian starts, is due to land in Sydney on Thursday but won't have a sit on either of the runners before race day.

"Probably not, to be honest," Paul said.

"He came and had a sit on Caviar Heights when we were in quarantine in the UK. They galloped together, and he rode Caviar and was very happy with him that day.

"Obviously, he knows Dubai Honour inside out, so we will leave Tom to recover from his flight, and we'll see him on Saturday."

Dubai Honour has an outstanding record in Sydney, his only defeat in four starts coming at the hands of Via Sistina (Fastnet Rock) in last year's Queen Elizabeth Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m).

Flemington to bring out the best in My Gladiola

My Gladiola (Credit: Racing Photos)

John Mcardle and his highly talented filly My Gladiola (I Am Invincible) are returning to Flemington looking to post a victory in a stakes race on the straight course. The VRC Sprint Classic (Listed, 1100m) on Saturday will see My Gladiola attempt to get a win on the board after two runs down the Flemington straight this campaign. McArdle is hoping the filly can bounce back following a disastrous performance in the Newmarket Handicap (Gr 1, 1200m) in which she was sent out the $4.80 second elect but failed to get into the race, winding up in tenth position. McArdle said My Gladiola's Newmarket was over as soon as the gate opened. "She came out of the run no problems, but it was a complete disaster from the start," the trainer said. "We've just got to forget it happened and start again. It was looking good leading up to the race, but as soon as they jumped it all went pear-shaped, but she came through it well, which is the main thing. A half-million-dollar race down the straight over 1100 metres, it should be ideal for her. We'll lick our wounds and go back and have another go." Keen to get a Group 1 on to her CV, Mcardle said the filly could be set for a crack at the Robert Sangster Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) at Morphettville on April 25.

McDonald hopes Barnavara could be Yulong’s next star

James McDonald can see similarities between Yulong's latest high-priced import, Barnavara (Calyx), and champion mare Via Sistina, as the former prepares for her Australian debut in Saturday’s Neville Sellwood Stakes (Gr 3, 2000m) at Rosehill. The rider has been putting in the hard yards behind the scenes at the Canterbury Quarantine Facility on Tuesday where he partnered Barnavara in a workout. "I didn't work Via before that first run. My first ride on her was the Ranvet, so I can't really draw comparisons, but one thing I would say by looking at their form lines, they're so consistent," McDonald said. "Via was probably running in better races, but this one is more lightly raced and unexposed, and her form reads so beautifully. She never puts a bad run in, and that's what Via came out with as well." A four-year-old mare to southern hemisphere time, Barnavara was purchased by Yulong Investments at the Tattersalls December Mares Sale for the equivalent of 4.8 million guineas ($A10.1 million) – the highest price paid for a filly in training last year. A Group 1 winner in France over 2000 metres at her most recent appearance, she was set to arrive at Chris Waller's Rosehill stable later on Tuesday ahead of her first local run this weekend. McDonald also rode her in a gallop at Canterbury last Friday, and noted she had improved significantly. "Beautiful mare. Great appetite for work, she loves her work, and she was a little bit stuffy then. The last [four] days, she has come on immensely," he said. "She feels really, really good, and I'd expect a huge performance from her this Saturday in the Neville Sellwood, that's for sure."

Juveniles impress at Rosehill trials

Blue Door pictured as a yearling (Credit: Inglis)

The Bjorn Baker-trained Blue Door (Stay Inside) was one of three unraced juveniles to trial at Rosehill on Tuesday morning and was by far the most impressive.

The unraced filly looked comfortable throughout the 900-metre heat, drawing clear in the final stages to beat Private Liaison (Home Affairs) by a dominant 7.6 lengths.

By Newgate Farm’s first-season Slipper (Gr 1, 1200m)-winning sire Stay Inside (Extreme Choice), the aptly named Blue Door is out of dual winner Notting Hill (Pierro) and was bought by Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott and Bruce Slade’s Kestrel Thoroughbreds for $400,000 at Inglis Easter last year.

Heat two was landed by Blue Door’s stable companion Isn’t She Autumn, an unraced daughter of Arrowfield’s red-hot sire The Autumn Sun (Redoute’s Choice).

Ridden by Rachel King, the filly crossed the line 1.9 lengths ahead of the Chris Waller-trained Fondness (Frankel), with Mille Feuille (All Too Hard) a further 0.1 lengths back in third.

A $160,000 purchase for Bjorn Baker Racing and Jim Clarke Bloodstock from Lime Country’s 2025 Inglis Classic Yearling Sale draft, Isn’t She Autumn is out of seven-time winner Little Stevie (Dream Ahead).

The final two-year-old trial of the morning was won by high-priced yearling purchase, Rocket Girl (I Am Invincible).

The Chris Waller-trained unraced filly defeated Darn You (Too Darn Hot) by 0.3 lengths, with Influential Jewel (Street Boss) another 1.2 lengths further back in third.

Rocket Girl was bought by Waller and Guy Mulcaster from Yarraman Park for $1.2 million at Inglis Easter last year. She is out of Group 3 winner Missile Mantra (Smart Missile), whose colt by I Am Invincible was catalogued for this year’s edition of the Sydney Sale, but has been withdrawn.

The other juvenile heat, a 1030-metre event, was won by the Ciaron Maher’s Maribyrnong Plate (Gr 3, 1000m) winner Tornado Valley (Too Darn Hot) with his $2.8 million stablemate The Next Episode (Snitzel) finishing another 0.3 lengths away in second. Lonhro Plate (Listed, 1000m) winner Agrarian Girl (Tassort) was another 0.1 lengths further back in third.

Meanwhile, Tornado Valley’s talented stablemate Tempted (Street Boss) warmed up for her intended crack in the TJ Smith Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) at Randwick on April 4 with an impressive trial win over 1030 metres. A runner-up in The Everest (Gr 1, 1200m) in the spring, Tempted was most recently seen winning last month’s Surround Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) at Randwick.

Queen Elizabeth plan for Autumn Glow

Unbeaten mare Autumn Glow (The Autumn Sun) will be tested beyond 1600 metres for the first time when she tackles the Queen Elizabeth Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m) at Randwick next month. Chris Waller confirmed the news via a press release on Tuesday. "Following discussions with Arrowfield Stud and Hermitage Thoroughbreds, it has been confirmed that Autumn Glow will contest the Group 1 Queen Elizabeth Stakes on Day 2 of The Championships," the statement read. "We’ve been very pleased with how she has come through her George Ryder Stakes victory. James McDonald and I have been particularly taken with her ability to relax in her races, along with her outstanding recovery post-run. We now look forward to her final run of the preparation on April 11." The talented daughter of The Autumn Sun stretched her unbeaten record to 11 with a dominant performance in last weekend’s George Ryder Stakes (Gr 1, 1500m).

Sheza Alibi set for Doncaster Handicap

The news that Autumn Glow will head to Queen Elizabeth means the hotly anticipated clash between the unbeaten mare and the Peter Moody and Katherine Coleman-trained Sheza Alibi (Saxon Warrior) in the Doncaster Mile (Gr 1, 1600m) will not come to fruition. However, Coleman said the last-start Randwick Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) winner was in good shape ahead of her next Group 1 test on April 4. Coleman spoke to Racing.com after jockey Jamie Melham had her first sit on Sheza Alibi in a jump-out at Cranbourne on Tuesday morning. "It was the first time Jamie Melham has had a sit on her, so we just said to her to have a nice feel of her," Coleman said. "She was not out there for a hard trial or anything – just letting her stretch her legs and I thought her work late, through the line was really good, going on to win the trial nicely. She [Melham] was just really pleased with her. She said she was lovely and relaxed. She’s got a great nature and attitude towards her work. She was pretty cruisy throughout the trial and until she gave her a squeeze and asked her to round it out and when she did, she quickened up really nicely."

Renewed Cup claims for Mark Twain

Mark Twain (Shocking) will line up in Saturday’s Australian Cup (Gr 1, 2000m) at Flemington following a surprise return to form for trainer Phillip Stokes. The gelding, winless for almost two years, resumed in late February with a fast-finishing third at odds of $101 in the Blamey Stakes (Gr 2, 1600m). The run came after a lengthy injury layoff and a series of unplaced efforts in New Zealand and Melbourne. Previously trained in New Zealand, Mark Twain was transferred to Stokes’ Pakenham stable after failing to feature in five runs during 2025, including last-place finishes at Te Rapa and in the Makybe Diva Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m). Assistant trainer Tommy Stokes said the stable had been encouraged by the horse’s work throughout his first preparation. “He’s been very consistent in his trackwork and we made sure he was fit enough first-up,” he told Racing.com. Mark Twain, who won the Roy Higgins (Listed, 2600m) at Flemington in 2024, is expected to appreciate the step up to 2000 metres. He is rated a $26 chance for the Australian Cup ahead of final acceptances.

Yulong privately purchase Grail Seeker

The curtain has been drawn on the racing career of multiple Group 1 winner Grail Seeker, with the daughter of Iffraaj (Zafonic) to join the broodmare band at Yulong following her private sale. The Lance O’Sullivan and Andrew Scott-trained mare was crowned New Zealand’s Champion Sprinter/Miler for the 2024-25 season following victories in the Telegraph (Gr 1, 1200m) and Tarzino Trophy (Gr 1, 1400m). The lightly raced five-year-old won four of her 16 starts and boasts a victory in the Wellington Guineas (Gr 2, 1400m) in addition to being four-times stakes placed, signing off with a third placing in the Telegraph in January. “We’ll probably send her to stud I would think,” Yulong’s chief operating officer Sam Fairgray said. “She’s a good looking mare and a fast Group 1-winning mare. If she leaves foals like herself, they will be very popular at yearling sales.”

In-form Ormsby looking forward to Manawatu Sires’ challenge

Cambridge trainer Chad Ormsby will look to continue a strong run of form when he heads to Trentham on Saturday, following a near-perfect result with his small team at Pukekohe last week. Ormsby produced three runners on the card, recording two wins and a narrow second. Stayer Castle Rock (Fastnet Rock) backed up a maiden victory over 1600 metres with an impressive win over 2100 metres, while Master Fay (Deep Field) returned to form with success in an open 1400-metre event. Have A Crack (Zoustar) was denied a hat-trick for the stable, finishing a close second in a Rating 75 (1200m) sprint. “It was a good day which could have been great, but you have to be happy with how the team’s racing,” Ormsby said. Attention now turns to Trentham, where Ormsby will saddle promising juvenile State Of Valour (Sword Of State) in the Manawatu Sires’ Produce Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m). The colt is yet to win but has shown consistency, including a last-start third in the Sistema Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m). “He’s trained on well and is in a really good space,” Ormsby said. Have A Crack is also nominated for the Flying Handicap (Listed, 1400m) but is unlikely to gain a start, while Castle Rock may have one more run before a winter break.

UAE: Costa set for return to Australia

Michael Costa (Credit: Darren Winningham)

Michael Costa will return to establish his training base in Queensland following the Dubai World Cup meeting at Meydan on Saturday. In 2022, Costa received what he described as a “left field” opportunity when he was offered the role of private trainer for Sheikh Ahmed bin Rashid Al Maktoum at Jebel Ali Stables in Dubai. Four years and more than one hundred winners later, Costa heads back to Australia with not only strong results on the board but invaluable experience gained from operating within a world-class racing setup alongside one of the sport’s most knowledgeable owners. That experience is expected to be a major asset as he looks to re-establish himself in Queensland, where he previously held a strong position in the training ranks, highlighted by an impressive winning strike-rate. Costa could yet finish his Dubai stint on a high, with three runners set to compete on the prestigious Dubai World Cup program. Marbaan (Oasis Dream) will contest the Al Quoz Sprint (Gr 1, 1200m), Midland Money (Shancelot) is set to line up in the Dubai Golden Shaheen (Gr 1, 1200m), while Elnajmm (Sea The Stars) will take his place in the Dubai Turf.

HK: Ka Ying Rising trials ahead of Sprint Cup as Champions Day approaches

Everything went as expected on Tuesday morning for Ka Ying Rising (Shamexpress) as the eight-time Group 1 winner cruised through a barrier trial in preparation for the Sprint Cup (Gr 2, 1200m), where he’ll attempt to secure a record-extending 19th consecutive win. Trained by David Hayes, Ka Ying Rising clocked a trial-best 57.62s (1000m) in the eight-runner first heat down Sha Tin’s turf straight – a neck in front of Beauty Waves (Starspangledbanner) – under championship-leading rider Zac Purton, who confirmed the sprinter’s wellbeing. Purton said: “He’s going really well. It’s good to be back on him. It was a nice little hit-out for him – he’ll run again in a few weeks, getting ready for [FWD] Champions Day.” Beauty Waves found the early lead before Ka Ying Rising swept effortlessly past him from fourth position. Successful in his past 18 races in Hong Kong and Australia, Ka Ying Rising is currently the world’s top-rated horse after the March edition of the World’s Best Racehorse Rankings was released. After the Sprint Cup on April 6, Ka Ying Rising will go for a second Chairman’s Sprint Prize (Gr 1, 1200m) win on April 26. Hayes said: “He was nice and relaxed. There were a couple of horses who put a bit of pressure on, but he stretched and got to them very easily – he won as you’d expect. I wanted to trial him down the straight because you never know; he might go down the straight somewhere. It’s a good experience for him, and he’s going back from 1400 to 1200 [metres], so he didn’t need a hard trial, hence why I put him over 1000.”

UK: Via Sistina confirmed in foal to Dubawi

Via Sistina (Credit: Racing Photos)

Yulong’s champion mare Via Sistina (Fastnet Rock) has been confirmed in foal to Darley’s Dubawi (Dubai Millennium).

It was announced in January that the Chris Waller-trained daughter of Fastnet Rock (Danehill) had been retired and would return to Britain for a date with Europe’s leading stallion following a career that yielded 16 victories, highlighted by 12 Group 1 wins and more than A$19.4 million (£9.7m/€11.2m) in prize-money.

Yulong chief operating officer Sam Fairgray said the mare is thriving at the operation’s Newmarket base in England.

“She’s at our property at Newmarket in England and she’s in foal to Dubawi,” Fairgray said.

“It’s great news that we heard a couple of days ago that she tested positive, so it’s really exciting now to see the first foal out of Via.”

Fairgray added the pairing made sense on multiple levels.

“Obviously he [Dubawi] is a champion stallion and physically it’s a good mating with Via being a big, robust mare and Dubawi being a smaller, neater and stronger sort of horse.”

Bred by Laundry Cottage Stud, Via Sistina was originally purchased for a modest 5,000gns at Book 3 of the Tattersalls December Yearling Sale in 2019. She went on to win five races for Joe Tuite and George Boughey, including the Pretty Polly Stakes (Gr 1, 1m 2f) in 2023. Later that year, she was sold to Yulong for 2,700,000gns at the Tattersalls December Mare Sale.

The mare exploded onto the Australian scene with an impressive victory in the 2024 Ranvet Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m) and went on to dominate the middle-distance ranks, winning a further ten Group 1 races, including back-to-back Cox Plates (Gr 1, 2040m) at Moonee Valley.

FR: Prix Kergorlay offers up Cup ballot exemption

One of France's premier staying races is now a 'win and you're in' race for Australia's iconic Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m). The Prix Kergorlay (Gr 2, 3000m) joins the Belmont Gold Cup (Gr 2, 2m) in the US and the UK's Ebor Handicap (1m 5.5f) as ballot exempt races for the Melbourne Cup at Flemington on the first Tuesday in November. The Prix Kergorlay has previously been a strong form reference for the Cup. In 2010, Americain (Dynaformer) took out the double, while the following year, Dunaden (Nicobar) ran in the Prix Kergorlay before winning the Flemington showpiece. In 2014, German-trained Protectionist (Monsun) completed the double. Victoria Racing Club chief executive Kylie Rogers said the partnership with France Galop was a celebration between two of the world's great racing nations. "France has a storied history and connection with the Melbourne Cup, and we are delighted to formalise our partnership with France Galop by introducing the Prix Kergorlay as a Golden Ticket race," Rogers said in a statement. "The Melbourne Cup attracts the best stayers from across the world, and this new partnership both incentivises and ensures that the strongest international contenders are competing on the first Tuesday in November. We look forward to building on this partnership and the long-shared bond between our two racing nations." The race for a berth in the Melbourne Cup commences at Flemington on Saturday with the winner of the Roy Higgins (Listed, 2600m) offered a ballot exemption. Other races in Victoria with 'win and you're in' status are the Andrew Ramsden (Listed, 2800m), the Bart Cummings (Gr 3, 2500m) and the Archer Stakes (Gr 3, 2500m), all run at Flemington, along with the Caulfield Cup (Gr 1, 2400m), the Moonee Valley Gold Cup (Gr 2, 2500m), the Geelong Cup (Gr 3, 2400m), and the Cox Plate.
