Choice colt set to ignite Extreme bidding battle at Easter

With the demand for Extreme Choice (Not A Single Doubt) far outweighing what he is capable of supplying, Newgate Farm have cleverly cornered the market on his progeny at this week’s Inglis Easter Yearling Sale but there is one outlier whose breeder and consignor believe will captivate the auditorium.

Considering the scarcity of such a premium product buyers will be circling Lot 26, the third foal - and second colt - produced by dual stakes winner Pretty Brazen (Brazen Beau), who raced with distinction in the Huddy family’s colours for co-trainers Tony and Calvin McEvoy.

Having failed to conceive last year, the mare’s transition to the breeding barn hasn’t all been smooth sailing but her successful mating with Extreme Choice marks the high point of the nine-year-old’s post-racing career given her suitor’s well-documented fertility challenges.

What's On

Only a small coterie of mares are selected to go on a date with Extreme Choice each year, but fortunately Graham and Linda Huddy own a share in the generational talent which granted them access to the Hunter Valley’s most exclusive club.

The resulting colt spent his formative months in Queensland at Peachester Lodge, the Huddy family’s farm in the Sunshine Coast hinterland, before making the journey south to Lime Country Thoroughbreds where co-owners Greg and Jo Griffin applied the finishing polish ahead of his official unveiling at Inglis’ Riverside Stables complex.

The bay colt will be the first Extreme Choice cab off the rank, with the Newgate nine then set to follow his lead and, while the early trading can occasionally be slow to pick up, his princely pedigree should ensure fireworks at approximately 11.45am on Sunday morning.

“Extreme Choice obviously doesn’t have many foals each year so we’re absolutely delighted to be able to offer one of his colts, especially at such a prestigious sale as Easter,” Linda Huddy told ANZ News.

“When we got confirmation that our mare was pregnant, it was an amazing feeling and it’s felt like a long wait since then to bring him to this sale. Pretty Brazen is a beautiful mare and the colt has inherited traits from the sire and the dam, so he’s a nice blend of both. He moves really well and he looks pretty fast to me but Extreme Choice can do anything with his progeny, so there’s a chance he’ll get over a bit of ground in time - but we’ll leave that up to whoever buys him.

“Everyone here on the farm loved him and Greg and Jo at Lime Country have a good opinion of him, but we’ll just have to let the market decide what he’s worth. Our main hope, as with all our yearlings, is that he finds a good home. At any other sale you might be a bit wary of him going through the ring so early on the first morning, but at Easter I don’t think it makes a difference because there will be buyers from all over the world ready to bid on the right horse.”

The timing for Peachester Lodge’s other Easter offering may be more consequential, however, with the potential value placed on their Per Incanto (Street Cry) colt set to increase should his half-sister Quintessa (Shamus Award) claim her third Group 1 in Saturday’s New Zealand Thoroughbred Breeders Stakes over the mile.

Quintessa started life at the family lodge before she was sold to Te Akau Racing for $170,000 at the 2022 New Zealand Bloodstock National Yearling Sale, and if the mare can justify co-favouritism under Opie Bosson in the feature race at Trentham, her principal owner David Ellis may be tempted to reinvest some of his winnings on Lot 252.

Extreme Choice (Credit: Newgate)

That is certainly the Huddys’ hope although ironically Per Incanto might spoil the Quintessa party, with his daughters Marotiri Molly and Bedtime Story both among her Breeders Stakes rivals. But regardless of the result on Saturday, Linda Huddy is convinced the colt’s innate athleticism - allied to his stallion’s pedigree - should ensure that he stands out from the crowd.

“He was quite a late foal but he’s matured and developed into a lovely colt,” she told ANZ News.

“As with all late foals he’s still got plenty of growing to do, but I’m sure the buyers can look past that and see the potential he’s got. Hopefully David [Ellis] will take a good look at him after the success Te Akau have had with Quintessa. It would be a bonus if she can win another Group 1 before the colt goes through the ring, but we’re pretty hopeful he’ll be popular anyway because of the dam’s record and Per Incanto’s recent results.”

Those sentiments were readily echoed by Jo Griffin, the New Zealand native who in conjunction with her husband and fellow Kiwi Greg has owned and operated Lime Country, in the Hunter Valley region, for the past five years.

The boutique Blandford operation has already achieved some spectacular results so far this season, with a 100 per cent clearance rate headlined by the $800,000 sale of their Anamoe (Street Boss) filly to Sheamus Mills on the Gold Coast in January.

But with eight lots by eight different sires up for auction at the Easter Sale, including offerings by esteemed stallions Too Darn Hot (Dubawi), Ole Kirk (Written Tycoon) and Frankel (Galileo), they look to have saved the best for last.

“We think there’s something for everyone in our Easter draft,” Jo Griffin told ANZ News.

“We’ve got a lovely mix of colts and fillies by eight amazing stallions, so there should be yearlings to suit all tastes and budgets. Some of the bigger syndicates have held off this year and kept some money in the kitty to have a red-hot crack at the colts on sale at Easter, so hopefully they’re keeping a close eye on our draft.

“We pride ourselves on our placement, and whether we’re planning a mating, buying a mare in foal or preparing a horse for the sales, we’re always thinking about who our buyers might be. We’ve already had a very successful sales season, but this week is like our grand final. It’s been a big build-up, but hopefully all the hard work has been worth it and we can get some great results for our clients.”

Lime Country’s joint top sellers at this sale last year were their Home Affairs (I Am Invincible) filly and their colt by Fierce Impact (Deep Impact), who sold for $400,000 apiece.

Given the quality which runs right through their 2026 draft, there is a very good chance that figure will be exceeded this year but Griffin is also adamant that buyers with slightly shallower pockets can locate value at the lower end of the market, provided they are prepared to look hard enough for it.

“Some of the colts at Easter will always go for huge money, and the average price can sometimes scare people off, but there is value to be found at this sale and I think sometimes buyers can miss out on getting a bit of a bargain here,” she told ANZ News.

“We sold Sunlight Power for $150,000 at this sale in 2021, he’s since gone on to win plenty of races and been placed at Group 1 level in Hong Kong. Gangster Granny is another one, we sold her for $240,000 three years ago and she’s won a couple of stakes races, so it just goes to show that you don’t have to pay big money to get the results on the track.

“We always want to get the highest possible price for our horses but you also have to be realistic with the market, and fortunately our clients are aligned with our approach. If you want to sell a yearling we’ve got a very good track record, but if you want to pass your horse in then there are plenty of other options out there for you. The farm is our only source of income, so we live and die by the sword and we need to keep the tools very sharp.”

Snitzel filly tops Inglis Digital March (Late) Online Sale

Washington Lilac (Credit: Racing Photos)

Last-start winner Washington Lilac (Snitzel) topped the Inglis Digital March (Late) Online Sale, selling to Silverdale Farm for $172,500.

Offered by TFI, Washington Lilac is a three-quarter sister to Group 1 winner Qafila (Not A Single Doubt), making her a valuable breeding prospect when her racing days are over.

Silverdale’s Rob Petith confirmed Washington Lilac would continue racing and remain with the Peter Moody and Katherine Coleman stable.

“She’s a beautiful filly with a beautiful page, she’s by Snitzel and the family has been well bred up so there’s plenty of fallback options there with her,’’ Petith said.

“We know the family well, she’s obviously a three-quarter to a Group 1 winner so when the time comes to breeding with her we’re confident she’ll make a beautiful broodmare.’’

The sale's second-top lot was four-year-old Polyglot (Lonhro), who sold to Darby Racing for $155,000. He will remain in the Michael Freedman stable.

Polyglot was part of a 15-strong Godolphin draft which grossed $447,750, much to the delight of racing and bloodstock manager Jason Walsh.

“We met the market at every level and there were some really good results in there overall and some good opportunities for the new purchasers to enjoy a lot of success,’’ Walsh said.

“It’s a great insight into the platform and the business that can be done on Inglis Digital and we’re really happy with today’s outcomes.’’

On Polyglot, Walsh added: “He’s been a really good horse to us for a number of seasons, he’ll stay in the same stable for his new ownership group and we wish them all the best with him.’’

Other lots of significance today included Newfoundland (Deep Impact) – who sold to Shane Jackson for $110,000 – Wentworth Falls (Too Darn Hot) ($105,000) and Buckeye (Zousain) ($100,000).

In total the March (Late) Sale grossed $3,257,000. Entries are now open for the Inglis Digital April (Early) Sale and will remain so for the next fortnight until midnight on Wednesday, April 8. The sale will run from April 10-15. To enter click here.

Group 1 winner Startantes added to Magic Millions Broodmare Sale

Startantes (Credit: Magic Millions)

The catalogue for May’s Magic Millions Gold Coast National Broodmare Sale continues to strengthen with the addition of Group 1 winner Startantes (Star Turn), offered in foal to Australia’s nine-time Group 1-winning champion, Anamoe (Street Boss).

To be presented as part of the Widden Stud draft, Startantes was prepared by leading Queensland trainer Robert Heathcote during her racing career and was a multiple winner at two before rising to the elite level at three, where she consistently performed against the best of her generation and secured her Group 1 victory in the Tattersall’s Tiara (Gr 1, 1400m) at Eagle Farm.

She also finished a narrow second in the Surround Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) and placed in the Flight Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m), performances which saw her crowned joint Champion 3YO Filly of Australia in the 2021/22 season.

Startantes is out of the Group 2-winning mare Funtantes (Easy Rocking), who has produced six winners from six runners — all metropolitan winners — highlighting the remarkable consistency and strength of the family. The page received a timely update with her full brother Fabulantes since being Group performed.

“To secure a Group 1-winning sprinter-miler, who was at the very top of her generation, carrying her first foal to Anamoe – a champion racehorse and a young stallion with all the credentials to develop into a leading sire of the future, is rare," Widden Stud’s Antony Thompson said.

Widden Stud has also confirmed Angus Armanasco Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m) winner Sassy Boom (Spirit Of Boom), Sisstainable (I Am Invincible) – a stakes performer and close relation to Sunlight (Zoustar) – and stakes winner Hard Rock Girl (All Too Hard), in foal to Zoustar (Northern Meteor), among a strong draft set to head north for the sale.

“Startantes was extremely well bought previously and the page has continued to develop since, with her full brother looking to follow in her footsteps over the upcoming Autumn and Brisbane carnivals,” Magic Millions managing director Barry Bowditch said.

“We’ve seen what Anamoe can achieve with quality mares in the sale ring this year and only anticipate the demand for his stock to continue rising as his runners hit the racetrack later in the year. We’ve also seen the impact first season sires can make on the racetrack with their first crop, highlighted again over the weekend in the Golden Slipper, and that only adds to the appeal in Startantes."

Startantes joins a classy line-up already confirmed for the National Broodmare Sale, including elite racetrack performers Legarto (Proisir), O’ Ole (Ole Kirk), Stretan Angel (Harry Angel) and Vibrant Sun (The Autumn Sun). Entries are now closing for all sections of the National Sale, click here to enter.

Ohope Wins draws wide in Vinery

Ohope Wins (Credit: Race Images)

Despite drawing wide for Saturday's Vinery Stud Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m), James McDonald believes it will 'take a good filly' to beat Kiwi raider Ohope Wins (Ocean Park) in the 2000-metre Group 1. The New Zealand Oaks (Gr 1, 2400m) winner makes her Australian debut in this weekend's contest at Rosehill, her seventh start this campaign, and she has been drawn in the outside barrier in a field of nine. McDonald partnered the Lance O'Sullivan and Andrew Scott-trained filly in a recent barrier trial and was impressed with her work through the line. "That was probably one question mark I had on her," McDonald said of the filly's extended preparation. "But she's got such a brilliant attitude. Her father was Ocean Park, and he was as tough as they come, and this filly feels exactly the same. She's got a great appetite for work and just loves it. Her program would be just eat, sleep and work. She is very rigid like that and very measured in how she does everything. She is just a beautiful filly." McDonald drew comparisons with last year's New Zealand Derby (Gr 1, 2400m) winner Orchestral (Savabeel), who went on to land the Vinery at her next start. "She was a good filly, Orchestral, and this one feels just as good," McDonald said. "It will take a good filly to beat her."

Aeliana to back up in Tancred

Having taken out the Ranvet Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m) just last weekend, the Chris Waller-trained Aeliana (Castelvecchio) will bid for a quickfire Group 1 double when lining up in Saturday's Tancred Stakes (Gr 1, 2400m) at Rosehill. She has been installed as the $1.65 favourite for this weekend's contest, ahead of Dubai Honour (Pride Of Dubai) at $4.20, while five of her Waller-trained stablemates will also take their place in the feature, including last-start Sky High Stakes (Gr 3, 2000m) second Soul Of Spain (Phoenix Of Spain). Aeliana is yet to race on the seven-day back-up, and will also be stepping up to 2400 metres for the first time since landing last year's ATC Australian Derby (Gr 1, 2400m). "I think he's going to be hard to beat," Duckworth said of Soul Of Spain. "Aeliana is on the back-up. It was a tough, testing run [in the Ranvet Stakes]. She's got the form and everything, but a mile-and-a-half at three-year-old grade against a mile-and-a-half against these older, tougher horses is a different ball game. River Of Stars will improve up to 2400 metres, and you will see the same from Valiant King. He jumps out of the ground when he gets to 2400 metres as well, so we've got some very good hopes."

Lindsay Park seek another Australian Cup

Will and JD Hayes will be bidding to add their name to a long list of Lindsay Park trainers to land the Australian Cup (Gr 1, 2000m) when they send out Apulia (Fiorente) to Saturday's Group 1 at Flemington. Colin Hayes, David Hayes, Peter Hayes, Ben Hayes and Tom Dabernig all have their names as winning trainers of this weekend's contest, and Apulia arrives into the race in good form having run second in the Peter Young Stakes (Gr 2, 1800m) last time out, a run that followed on from wins in the Perth Cup (Gr 2, 2400m) and Ted Van Heemst Stakes (Gr 2, 2100m). Blinkers have again been added to Apulia's gear for Saturday's Group 1. "He hasn't worn the headgear for a while, so we've put a set of blinkers on which may give us the extra couple of lengths that we need to catch Birdman," Ben Hayes said. "I thought we ran well behind him at Caulfield. He had the easier run than us, as we had to go wide. He's there to peak on Saturday. He loves Flemington and I think the 2000 metres is what he's looking for. I think 2400 [metres] is his best trip with his win in the Perth Cup, and he was dominant, but at 2000 [metres], he'll still be sharp enough and will be competitive. We're hopeful and I think he's a genuine top three chance in an Australian Cup, and it has been a good race to us over the years."

Onesmoothoperator to step back up in trip

The rest of this week's weather will be the main factor in whether Onesmoothoperator (Dialed In) takes to the Flemington track or not. Now trained in Bendigo by Tim Fitzsimmons, having left UK-based trainer Brian Ellison to remain in Australia, the eight-year-old gelding is in need of quick ground to be at his best and Fitzsimmons has eyes on Saturday's Roy Higgins Quality (Listed, 2600m) for the son of Dialed In (Mineshaft). A win in Saturday's race provides the winner a ballot exemption into the Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) at Flemington in November, a race Onesmoothoperator has run 12th and 16th in the past two editions, but Fitzsimmons has eyes on the Caulfield Cup (Gr 1, 2400m). "They were too sharp over the mile and there was no speed either which didn't help," Fitzsimmons said of Onesmoothoperator's last-start ninth in the Blamey Stakes (Gr 2, 1600m). "It's a lot better race for him on Saturday up to his preferred sort of distance and I think he's trained on from the other day as well. He's done a heap of work since. However, I am worried about the weather. If it rains, and it's any worse than a Soft 5, then I'll probably scratch him. He doesn't go a yard on it, and I don't want to waste runs with him. There is the Mornington Cup or even if the weather forecast looks ok in Sydney, he could go straight to the Sydney Cup. He's the sort of horse that can do that which we saw when he won first-up in the Moonee Valley Cup in the spring. The ultimate aim is the Caulfield Cup in the spring, but there are not many races around for him, and unfortunately a lot are going to be dictated by the weather."

Under Focus stamps home stakes claims

A win at the second time of asking has Under Focus (Too Darn Hot) on track or a step up to stakes grade in the near future. The Kris Lees-trained colt had run second over 1000 metres at Warwick Farm on March 11 and went on better at Randwick-Kensington on Wednesday, beating Drumfire (Farnan) by 1.5 lengths under Tyler Schiller. A $300,000 Easter yearling buy for Yulong, the son of Too Darn Hot (Dubawi) could be aimed at the Kindergarten Stakes (Gr 3, 1100m) at Randwick on April 4 following his maiden victory over 1100 metres. "I'd say we'd have to look at it. It's a week-and-a-half away," Lees said. "We'll see how he pulls up and speak to the Yulong team, but they've got a really nice horse going forward. He had to do a little bit of work early, so I thought there was some merit to the win. Pre-race it looked a nice race with a bit of trial form and some exposed racehorses. He's done it both ends so it was a good effort."

Reachin’ Out impresses on debut

The Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott-trained Reachin’ Out (Stay Inside) created a favourable impression at Randwick-Kensington on Wednesday when landing an 1100-metre contest on debut. The juvenile daughter of Stay Inside (Extreme Choice) impressed with a 3.9 lengths success over She’s Extra (Exceedance) under Regan Bayliss, with a further 1.7 lengths back to Victorious Ruler (Wild Ruler) in third. “Gee, that was impressive. Yeah, my word,” stable representative Neil Paine said. “Regan rated her well in front, and then, once he let her go at the top of the straight, gee, she put it beyond doubt. That was a really impressive win. Look, we knew she went well, but she was first-up today and her trials have been nice. And look…on the Kensington track, our horses race really well and we knew Regan was going to lead, and our other horse was just going to sit behind, because Victoria's Rule is probably just looking for a bit further. So did we expect it…I'm gonna say yes.” Reachin’ Out was purchased for $400,000 by her trainers and Kestrel Thoroughbreds from the Element Hill Unreserved Dispersal at the 2024 Magic Millions National Weanling sale draft. She is one of five winners from six to race out of the imported Elnadim (Danzig) mare Pasar Silbano and a half-sister to the Widden Stud-based sire Zousain (Zoustar).

Hydrobomb produces loud bang at Sandown

Hydrobomb (Credit: Racing Photos)

Hydrobomb (Shamus Award) produced a statement win at Sandown-Lakeside on Wednesday when scoring at the third time of asking in a 1400-metre contest. The Lindsay Park-trained juvenile colt had run second at the Sandown-Hillside track over 1300 metres before then finishing sixth in the VRC Sires' Produce Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m). A drop back down in class saw the son of Shamus Award (Snitzel) proved too strong for his nine rivals, beating Prime Pattern (Rubick) by 0.8 lengths under Daniel Stackhouse. “He began ok, but then just didn't want to take part,” said Stackhouse. “I don't know if he was still asleep or he was still asleep in the stalls from the big break we just had, but… It was an impressive win because he didn't want to tack up early. I had to make him really pick up the bridle. When I asked him, when we straightened up and asked for an effort, he really extended. Yeah, it did open up well for us. Just lucky I had him underneath me. I really like this horse. I think he's got a bright future. What he's done today, he's just improved so much and he's just going to get better when he gets to a three-year-old age as well.” Bred by Seymour Equine Services, Hydrobomb was a $200,000 purchase for Slade Bloodstock Pty Ltd and Lindsay Park Racing from the Book 1 draft of Phoenix Park at the 2025 NZB Karaka Yearling Sale. He is the sixth winner from seven to race out of the More Than Ready (Southern Halo) mare Splat, making him a half-brother to Miss Tycoon Rose (Written Tycoon) – who will be represented by her Zoustar filly (Lot 440) at the upcoming Inglis Easter Yearling Sale.

Santana books place in Up & Coming Stars Series Final

The Team Hawkes-trained Santana (Ole Kirk) will be targeted at the Sportsbet Up & Coming Stars Series Final (1400m) after landing the sixth heat at Sandown-Lakeside on Wednesday. Lining up over 1200 metres under Luke Currie, the three-year-old gelding defeated Cavalry Scout (Blue Point) by 0.8 lengths, with a further 1.7 lengths back to the third-placed Fastobullet (Churchill). “He’s a nice horse, and on the back-up he was really sharp today, so it was a good effort,” Currie told Racing.com. “From the outside I wanted to make sure he was positive, and he did that, because he flew out and put himself there. I could’ve led [but] I was happy for that horse down to the inside to roll up inside us, just to go with something rather than be on his own for the first time. He switched off outside it perfectly, relaxed…it was just a matter of when I let him go. He might’ve got a little bit lost late in the straight there on his own in front, but it was a good effort.”

Stefi Magnetica retired by Baker

Stefi Magnetica (Credit: Racing Photos)

Bjorn Baker has announced the retirement of dual Group 1-winning mare Stefi Magnetica (All Too Hard). A daughter of All Too Hard (Casino Prince), the now five year-old emulated her dam Mid Summer Music (Oamaru Force) when landing the Stradbroke Handicap (Gr 1, 1400m) in 2024 and also added the 2025 Doncaster Mile (Gr 1, 1600m) to her CV along with a win in The Invitation (1400m). Bred by Cressfield Stud, she was purchased by her trainer and Clarke Bloodstock for $140,000 at the 2022 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale and retires with a record of five wins and nine placings from a 26-start career which yielded over $7.3 million in prize-money. A statement from Baker on Wednesday read: "Today we announce the retirement of dual Group 1 winner, Stefi Magnetica, her record at the top level firmly established. A mare who has meant a great deal to her trainer and ownership group, she now heads to the breeding barn with her place in the sport well and truly earned. From the racetracks of Wellington and Orange to Eagle Farm's Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap and on to Randwick's Group 1 Doncaster Mile, she has led her ownership group on quite a journey. Stefi Magnetica is the most special mare I've ever trained - and two Group 1 wins bear that out. She was unlucky on plenty of occasions, but when it truly mattered, the Doncaster was ours, and she deserved every bit of it. An unassuming mare, she was easy and quiet in her work, but that belied her ever present toughness. She has a personality to match her ability, and those who know her well will understand exactly what we mean when we say we developed a certain fondness for her fierceness in the barn. She's been enormously special for the ownership group of Ridgmont, Ken Salagic, Jakob Vitek & the Curries and for me personally. Full credit to Jim Clarke, who found her - I'm deeply grateful for the opportunity."

Ronaldo on target for Group 1 goal

Ronaldo (Credit: Race Images)

Trainer Robbie Patterson is confident unbeaten colt Ronaldo (Ribchester) will make his presence felt in the Manawatu Sires’ Produce Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) at Trentham on Saturday irrespective of track conditions, with rain forecast later in the week. The son of Ribchester (Iffraaj) handled soft conditions when a comfortable winner at Wanganui last start, having won on a heavy track on debut. “He hasn't missed a beat since he last raced and I couldn't be happier with him,” Patterson said. “I haven’t done a lot with him as he had a tough run at Wanganui.” Ronaldo will be ridden by regular rider Craig Grylls and is $3.50 second favourite behind Seize The Day (I Am Invincible). “Craig believes that on top of the ground he would be way better, but he has done it already on a very testing track at New Plymouth and it was a tricky old track at Wanganui the other day,” Patterson said. “Seize The Day looks the one to beat. He’s drawn 11 and we’re drawn 12, so it gives us options of following him and maybe if there is rain the draw might be a help.” Patterson believes Ronaldo will furnish into a lovely three-year-old and already has New Zealand 2,000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) aspirations along with a tilt at the $4.5 million NZB Kiwi (Listed, 1500m). “I think he'll relish 1600 metres, because he's such a big, strong, relaxed horse. Horses in his age group, if they can relax and have the ability, they can go a fair way,” he said. “I'm confident if everything goes to plan, going into his three-year-old career, he'll definitely get a mile. He’s huge, he looks like a three-year-old now. I’m not worried about stepping up to 1400 metres this weekend as he gets stronger as the race goes.”

Weather worries for Te Akau’s Group 1 quartet

Te Akau’s Matamata-based trainer Sam Bergerson is happy to have four runners engaged in the last two Group 1 features of the season, but what doesn’t please him is a worsening weather forecast ahead of Trentham on Saturday. Having topped the century last weekend for the third time in their three-season partnership, Bergerson and senior partner Mark Walker have Quintessa (Shamus Award), Qali Al Farrasha (Almanzor) and Captured By Love (Written Tycoon) engaged in Saturday’s NZ Thoroughbred Breeders’ Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m), while Seize The Day is their sole starter as they seek a third consecutive win in the Manawatu Sires’ Produce Stakes. While Bergerson is satisfied that all four horses are in the right form, developing weather will be the final decider on their weekend assignments. “It wasn’t looking too bad earlier in the week, but every time I’ve checked over the past couple of days the forecast has just got worse,” Bergerson said. “It’s shaping like a repeat of what we were up against in the spring and the frustrating thing is we’ve no control over it. We’re so looking forward to giving Seize The Day his chance in a Group 1 over 1400 metres. This is the race we set him for, he’s got a beautiful big stride that’s made for a roomy track like Trentham, but not a wet Trentham. He trialed up well enough on heavy tracks in the spring, but raceday in this grade is different and that other colt, Ronaldo, has won his two races on soft and heavy tracks. It’s probably less of a worry with our three mares in the Breeders’ Stakes, they’re older and more seasoned, but it’s still far from ideal, we’d much rather be running on good ground. With all of our Group 1 runners, class will take them a long way, but it’s very frustrating as Saturday was meant to be their grand final for the season. We’ll just have to keep an eye on things and see what the weather brings before we make a final decision.”

Callaway aiming to sign off on a riding high

Waikouaiti-based horseman Lee Callaway is close to calling time on his career as a jockey. Callaway is one away from 300 wins in the saddle and when he brings up his triple century, which includes four Group or Listed victories, will step aside to concentrate on his training operation. “It’s too hard to focus on training and riding at the same time, I’ve got away with it for the last couple of years but it’s very challenging to do,” the 41-year-old said. “When I get to 300, I’ll be retiring and I’ll find one more meeting after that where I’ll maybe just have one or two rides to let people know that it’s my last day.” Callaway will have one opportunity at Wingatui on Friday to bring up his personal milestone when he partners Nikki White’s Jot Down (Wrote) in the Property Brokers – Ray Kean Maiden (1200m). “It’s been a bit disappointing, I think they’re going to put the hood on and want me to send it forward in the race and see if it can keep going,” Callaway said. He will also have five of his stable members in action at the meeting with two of them, Claudius Maximuss (Iffraaj) and The Good Shepherd (Power), in the KB Contractors Handicap (1400m) and will monitor their performances from the sideline. “When I’m training them, it doesn’t affect me when I’m out there, but I do prefer to put someone else on,” Callaway said.

Hong Kong Derby hero Bowman lands Valley treble while Shum surges with four-timer

Hugh Bowman (Credit: HKJC)

After following up a third career triumph in the Hong Kong Derby (2000m) at Sha Tin last Sunday with a Happy Valley treble on Wednesday night, Hugh Bowman declared the last week “the highlight of this season”, while Danny Shum roared into trainers’ championship contention with a remarkable four-timer.

With the ink on the Derby’s roll of honour still fresh, Bowman was back to his brilliant best at the night meeting. After taking his seasonal tally to 44 wins, the Australian said he’d had this week, which yielded his first treble of the season, highlighted in his planner for a while.

“It goes in roundabouts; you have quiet periods, and you have good periods,” Bowman said. “I felt coming into this Wednesday night and the coming Sunday, I’ve got more rides that are capable of figuring in the finish. So, it’s a bit easier to get more focus for those days when you know in advance that they’re coming.”

Bowman claimed his first win of the night in the opener, partnering with Shum to guide Joyful Prosperity (Daiwa Major) to the Class 5 Tuen Mun Handicap (2200m). After circling the field mid-race, the six-year-old Japanese-bred got up to beat Romantic Fantasy (Fascinating Rock) in a photo-finish. It was a spirited effort from Joyful Prosperity, though Shum admitted: “He was very lucky – Hugh Bowman did a good job to get him up on the line.”

“He’s a horse; if he’s in the finish, he will really fight for you,” added Bowman. “He’s been an old soldier, and I’ve had a bit of luck on him. So it was good to win on him.”

Bowman scored his second win of the night in the second section of the Class 4 Tsuen Wan Handicap (1650m) courtesy of a measured ride aboard the Tony Cruz-trained Beauty Viva (Iffraaj). Stalking the pace throughout, the five-year-old burst clear in the home straight for his first Hong Kong win.

“I feel like he’s got far more talent than his form suggests,” Bowman said. “I thought he’s raced with a bit more purpose today. He came out and raced like a horse should.”

Bowman’s hat-trick win came aboard Cody Mo trainee Motor (Fastnet Rock) in the third section of the Class 4 Kwai Chung Handicap (1200m), with the four-year-old son of Fastnet Rock (Danehill) securing his second win of the season.

“I thought there was a lot of merit in Motor’s run,” Bowman said. “He gave me the feel of a horse that could win a race very soon when he had no luck at Sha Tin recently. So that was quite satisfying.”

Shum sealed a double when Lyle Hewitson piloted Win Method (Written Tycoon) to victory in the first section of the Class 4 Tsuen Wan Handicap (1650m).

“He suits the 1650 metres well and could even go over 1800 metres,” Shum said. “As a four-year-old, he will be even better. He can have a bright future at Happy Valley.”

Shum’s run continued when Without Compare (Brutal) dug in bravely under Jerry Chau to deny a rallying Keefy (All Too Hard) in the Class 3 Fanling Handicap (1650m), before the quartet was completed in the card-closing Class 3 Kwu Tung Handicap (1200m), when My Day My Way (Overshare) held off Greater Bae (Pierata) in a thrilling climax to the night.

“I won’t push my horses to win a championship,” said Shum, whose splendid night saw him leapfrog Francis Lui (38 wins) and David Hayes (40) and move to 41 wins for the season, one behind Mark Newnham (42) and two behind Caspar Fownes (43).

“In the last 12 years, I’ve really looked after my horses. Of course, I would love to win the championship, but I won’t push them.”

Honest Witness (Written By) finally broke through for Hayes in the second section of the Class 4 Kwai Chung Handicap (1200m). Wearing the storied black and green colours of the Da Silva family, the four-year-old made all, enjoying a ground-saving trip under champion jockey Zac Purton, before letting down in the final 200 metres to salute by a head over a fast-closing The Heir (Impending).

The owner of Honest Witness, Archie da Silva, who also owned the legendary Silent Witness (El Moxie), was thrilled to be back under the winner’s arch.

“I’ve waited two and a half years for a winner with those famous colours of mine,” Da Silva said. “I always firmly believed [Honest Witness] had ability.

“He got the rail today, led by two and a half lengths going into the straight, and bounced away. I’m so happy.”

Purton’s second win was also the night’s most dominant when promising four-year-old Hong Kong International Sale graduate Giant Ballon (Mehmas) romped home – for his second straight victory – in the first section of the Class 4 Kwai Chung Handicap (1200m) for trainer Douglas Whyte.

“He has come on, he’s improved, and he showed that tonight,” Whyte said. “The way he won and the way he’s going, you would imagine that he would be able to handle Class 3.”

Alexis Badel ended a lean spell when he took the Class 3 The Rotary Centenary Challenge Cup Handicap (1000m). The Frenchman halted a winless streak at 26 races aboard Manfred Man-trained Bunta Baby (Cable Bay), who continued a fine season by registering his third win in four outings.

Hong Kong racing continues this Sunday at Sha Tin.

It’s In The Blood

Six Of The Best - Inglis Easter 2026

Trevor Marshallsea

ANZ News

Here, in lot order, is a look at a magnificent half dozen who’ll be turning heads and raising hands at the Inglis Easter Yearling Sale.

Lot 280
b/br c CASTELVECCHIO - EDGY STYLE (Harbinger)

Arrowfield Stud. DOB: 17-09-24

Lot 280: Castelvecchio ex Edgy Style colt (Credit:  Inglis)

Among its typically sparkling draft, Arrowfield will also offer a potential sale-topper in Lot 451, the colt by Snitzel (Redoute’s Choice) out of Ms Bad Behavior (Blame) who’s a full-brother to Coolmore Stud Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) hero Switzerland.

But the stud is also anticipating considerable attention on the intriguingly exotic Lot 280.

He’s an athletic and scopey son of upwardly mobile sire Castelvecchio (Dundeel), who boasts dual Group 1-winning mare Aeliana among his progeny, and has One Step Closer among the chances to emulate her Australian Derby (Gr 1, 2400m) victory on Saturday week.

But of great interest is that he’s the fourth foal of Japanese import Edgy Style (Harbinger). That makes him a half-brother to Urban Chic (Suave Richard), the Joint Leading 3YO Male on the WBR Rankings of 2024, with two stakes wins among four career victories from 1800 metres to 3000 metres, including the Kyoto Kikuka Sho (Gr 1, 3000m).

Second dam Land’s Edge (Dance In The Dark) also threw the dam of triple Japanese elite winning mare Regaleira (Suave Richard).

And third dam Wind In Her Hair (Alzao) won a Group 1 in Germany and two UK Listed races, before achieving greater fame as the dam of phenomenal Japanese racehorse and sire Deep Impact (Sunday Silence).

“He’s certainly got a stallion’s pedigree,” Arrowfield bloodstock manager Jon Freyer said of the colt.

“But on type, he’s a real stand-out as well. He’s an outstanding colt, very athletic, and with a beautiful, fluid action to him, and great power.

“He’s been doing everything right, taking it all his stride, and we’re expecting he’ll do very well.

“Plus he’s by Castelvecchio, who’s the rising star of the Australian bloodstock industry.”

Lot 293
b f JUSTIFY - ENNIS HILL (Fastnet Rock)

Coolmore Stud DOB: 18-10-24

Lot 293: Justify ex Ennis Hill filly (Credit: Inglis)

Coolmore are expecting big things of this well-bred, superbly built filly by their ex shuttler Justify (Scat Daddy), who’s the first full-sibling produced to former outstanding two-year-old Learning To Fly.

That filly won her first three starts in impressive fashion - including storming home from second-last on the turn to take the Inglis Millennium (RL, 1100m). She was second favourite for the Golden Slipper (Gr 1, 1200m) but unfortunately lost her rider, but that didn’t stop her claiming Australia’s Champion 2YO Filly honours.

Now Coolmore and partners have gone back to the well to breed a full -sister they feel is built to do justice to her impressive family.

Dam Ennis Hill (Fastnet Rock) won the MRC Chairman’s Stakes (Gr 3, 1100m) at two and has also borne Learning To Fly’s younger half-sister Free Flying (Snitzel), who’s run second in Caulfield’s Debutant Stakes (Listed, 1000m) among her first three starts this season.

Second dam Hips Don’t Lie (Stravinsky) was another star juvenile, winning three stakes races in her first season including the Reisling Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m).

She’s had two other stakes-winning full siblings to Ennis Hill in Lake Geneva and current Coolmore sire Acrobat, as well as stakes-placed current two-year-old La Gitana (Home Affairs).

“She’s a magnificent physical with great residual value,” said Coolmore’s sales and nominations manager Colm Santry.

“She’s a beautiful type - a filly with great size, strength, scope and quality, and she’s got a great action on her and a wonderful temperament.

“There should be good demand for her from trainers wanting a racehorse, but also from people looking for an elite broodmare later on.

“And the cross is deadly.”

Fastnet Rock (Danehill) is Justify’s best nick of more than ten runners by its SWTR ratio, with six stakes winners from 29 starters at 20 per cent, headed by another former star juvenile turned Coolmore stallion in Storm Boy.

Lot 306
ch f EXTREME CHOICE - FASHION FAUX PAS (Flatter)

Newgate Farm DOB: 30-09-24

Lot 306: Extreme Choice ex Fashion Faux Pas filly (Credit: Inglis)

This could go down as the Easter sale of Extreme Choice (Not A Single Doubt), with Newgate’s sub-fertile sensation represented by five fillies and five colts conceived after his entry to the service fee stratosphere in 2023.

And there’ll be no finer examples than this imposing filly from his farm’s draft.

She’s the third foal of one of the many fast American mares imported by Newgate in Fashion Faux Pas (Flatter), who won two stakes races amongst three career wins from 1200 metres to 1700 metres. The dam’s half-sister begat two more US stakes winners including the four-timer Flash Of Mischief (Into Mischief).

But while there’s plenty of speed on the page in the union of Fashion Faux Pas and the dual 1200-metre elite winning Extreme Choice, Newgate’s Henry Field expects this filly, while going early, will push on to cover longer trips.

In that sense, Field says she’s from the mould of the stallion’s top-ranked performer, VRC Oaks (Gr 1, 2500m) and ATC Champagne Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) queen She’s Extreme.

“This is a wonderful filly, out of a very fast American mare. She’s really the model of She’s Extreme,” Field said.

“She’s got plenty of size and scope, she should go early, and will train on to be a top miler at three.

“She has great balance, great scope, she looks like she’ll be very fast but will get over some ground as well.”

Lot 420
b c ZOUSTAR - MATRYOSHKA (I Am Invincible)

Widden Stud DOB: 24-10-24

Lot 420: Zoustar ex Matryoshka colt (Credit: Inglis)

This is an interesting colt in that there’ll be others - including from Widden’s own draft - with more impressive pages, but none will catch more eyes for their physical presence.

That’s not to say the page is by any means plain. By Widden’s reigning champion sire Zoustar (Northern Meteor), the colt is the fourth foal of Matryoshka (I Am Invincible), who’s the dam of Straight Charge (Written By), who won the ATC Silver Slipper Stakes (Gr 2, 1100m) before a 2.41-length sixth in the Golden Slipper (Gr 1, 1200m).

The placed Matryoshka is also a half-sister to triple stakes winner and current sire Winning Rupert (Written Tycoon), and to his Group 3-winning full-sister Tycoon Evie.

And Matryoshka’s previous foal Jarbardar (Written By) won his only trial, at Corowa, by 3.87 lengths earlier in March, and is set to debut in Randwick’s Kindergarten Stakes (Gr 3, 1100m) on April 4.

But it’s undoubtedly the physical appearance of this magnificently built, richly coloured colt that’s made him one of the most in-demand yearlings at Riverside this week.

“It’s a decent page - he’s a half to Straight Charge out of an I Am Invincible mare. Still it’s not the most obvious page - but he’s just a stonking horse,” says Widden owner Antony Thompson with an almost incredulous laugh.

“You just won’t find a better looking yearling colt than this bloke. He’s got a massive forearm, huge gaskin, he has a lovely beautiful colour - he’s got great skin on him.

“He’s got a lovely big action and a great attitude and he’s the one who’s turning heads out here.”

Zoustar over I Am Invincible (Inivncible Spirit) is performing well from limited exposure, with 12 winners from 18 runners.

Lot 446
b/br c ALABAMA EXPRESS - MONTEFILIA (Kermadec)

Yulong DOB: 25-10-24

Lot 446: Alabama Express ex Montefilia colt (Credit: Inglis)

Yulong are of course heavily into the stallion business and they already believe this colt - by Treasurethe Moment’s sire Alabama Express (Redoute’s Choice) out of quadruple Group 1 winner Montefilia (Kermadec) - has sire quality about him.

“As someone who’s at a farm with a lot of stallions, I’d say he looks like a stallion already,” says the farm’s sales and nominations manager Harry King.

“When you pull him out of the box, he takes everything in his stride so well.

“You can easily imagine him standing with 400 people around him at a stallion parade, because he holds himself so well and has such great presence, even without knowing the page.”

And that page is bursting with quality, stemming from a fine British family with speed and stamina. Fourth dam Ausherra (Diesis) was a stakes winner at 2200 metres who threw two more black type victors in Strategic Prince (Dansili), who won two Group 2s at up to 1400 metres, and Yorkshire (Generous), who was successful at up to 4000 metres.

Second dam Bana Wu (Shirocco) won at 2000 metres and was Listed placed at Royal Ascot.

And she of course threw the star of the page - Montefilia - whose four Group 1s from 1600 metres to 2400 metres were shadowed by as many elite placings.

“She was excessively good,” King says, “a mare who consistently measured herself against the best, and took on and beat horses like Verry Elleegant, Hungry Heart, Mo’unga and more.

“Sometimes you wouldn’t think she was going to win but she just had that great turn of foot we’ve seen in so many of these good broodmares over the years.

“And she’s done all you could ask in producing a first foal. He’s got terrific balance to him, with amazing angles that an architect would love to be dealing with; a good, free-flowing loose yearling who has a shoulder that moves with him.

“To top it off, he’s got some of those potent Australian and international bloodlines that have been so successful on Australian tracks - a Redoute’s Choice line, and Encosta De Lago line, Galileo, and that lovely middle distance European style in the back end of his page.

“He looks like a colt you could race at two, and as we’ve seen with Alabama Express, they’re sound horses who race on.”

Lot 452
b f REBEL DANE - MULL OVER (So You Think)

Goodwood Farm DOB: 25-08-24

Lot 452: Rebel Dane ex Mull Over filly (Credit: Inglis)

This yearling’s breeders are hoping lightning can strike twice. She’s a full-sister to Fireburn (Rebel Dane).

That outstanding filly won five races on the bounce as a two-year-old for trainer Gary Portelli - highlighted by her sterling victory in the Golden Slipper (Gr 1, 1200m) and ATC Sires’ Produce Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) success - to be crowned Australia’s Champion 2YO of 2021-22.

Fireburn added two more elite placings before scoring again at three in Doomben’s ANZ Bloodstock News The Roses (Gr 2, 2000m) en route to a multi-million dollar broodmare sale to Northern Farm in Japan, where her first foal sold for $3.3 million.

Breeders Laurel Oak Bloodstock have gone back to their former star sprinter Rebel Dane (California Dane) at Widden Stud with their wonderful producer Mull Over (So You Think) - also the dam of dual Group winner Kintyre (Hallowed Crown).

And the result is a very close likeness to Fireburn herself, according to vendor Goodwood Stud’s Kerrie Tibbie.

“She’s a lovely filly - very much like Fireburn,” Tibbie said. “She’s built a lot like her, but perhaps with a little bit more scope.

“The best thing about her is just the way she moves. She’s very athletic, she doesn’t hit the ground hard - just glides along and does everything nicely.

“She’s not complicated. She’s easy to deal with and gets on with the job. I think she’ll go early. She’s got the right brain to go early, and half of that battle is the brain. She’s very laid back, and she scoped and x-rayed well.”
