Inglis Easter Sale begins with ‘elite offering’ against an uncertain global backdrop

Inglis Easter, the southern hemisphere’s most important yearling sale, kicks off on Sunday marked by
the competing forces of what’s been hailed as its finest catalogue yet contrasted by deep global
uncertainty over the war in the Middle East.
The latter factor has Inglis Bloodstock CEO Sebastian Hutch “apprehensive” about how the auction
will pan out, with the tendrils of US president Donald Trump’s incursion into Iran possibly reaching
as far as the Australian thoroughbred market.
And with that action erupting at the outset of the Melbourne Premier sale earlier this month, Hutch
believes it renders exposed form in the 2026 Australasian yearling market thus far - mostly positive
though it might be - as far less of a guide than usual.
What's On
Following withdrawals, a concentrated total of 421 yearlings will go under the hammer from 11am on
Sunday in the two-day sale hailed as “the best of the best”.
When the catalogue was released in January, Hutch described it as the finest he’d seen in his seven
years at Inglis. That assertion has been echoed by others at Riverside this week.
“I look at a lot of yearlings, and buy the odd one,” North Bloodstock’s general manager Mick Malone
told ANZ News. “I’ve seen the whole catalogue, and I reckon I’ve never seen a bunch of Easter horses
as good. They’ve put a very good catalogue together.
“There’s been huge interest here this week. Foot traffic is really, really good, with lots of
parades. It feels good.
“There’s either a lot of tyre kickers here or it’s going to be a really good sale.”
However, the man in charge is taking a more guarded approach.
While Hutch is typically cautious and conservative in his forecasts for Inglis sales, he feels he
has more grounds than usual this year, given what’s happening 13,000 kilometres away.

Trump’s attack on Iran and the wide and profound ructions it has caused - from global financial
markets to Australian fuel prices - means the Inglis team will have their fingers crossed about
seeing a level of immunity from the troubles of the world at Riverside on Sunday and Monday.
“I’m apprehensive in advance of the sale,” Hutch told ANZ News. “That’s not unusual for me before a
sale, but I’m very aware of what challenges there are to be faced in advance of a sale like this.
The timing is not ideal.
“It’s just a confidence thing. The level of uncertainty we have at the moment is not typically
conducive to people making bullish decisions. There’s a volatile stock market, a weak currency in
places like New Zealand and Japan. Travel from Europe and other places is a bit trickier than it
ordinarily would be.
“We’ve consolidated a good group of people here for the sale, but these are not the conditions you’d
choose if you could pick your conditions to have a sale.”
Hutch said he did not want to “elicit false expectations of false confidence in the market”.
“It’s normal to be apprehensive when, despite having a catalogue of good horses, you’re trying to
conduct a sale with a backdrop of a war in the Middle East involving a number of the major economies
in the world, and the effect that’s having on economies locally and internationally,” he said.
“They’re not the sort of circumstances you’d pick to go selling horses on.”
That said, Hutch said the sale could create opportunities for savvy buyers, especially considering
one factor that’s not uncertain - the quality of stock on offer.
“I think people will see an opportunity in what’s happening and look to take advantage of that, and
good luck to those people,” he said.
“I don’t want to be complacent about where we’re going to land on Sunday and Monday, but we’ve got a
good product here, and people want to race good horses.”
He added: “Certainly at this stage we’re very positive about the horses. I think there are a lot of
very significant horses here, and not just at the pointy end of the market, but right the way
through.
“I think people will buy some spectacularly good horses at $120,000, $150,000, $220,000 - right the
way through the various price points. I think there’s good horses at all levels of the market.”
Hutch also issued a reminder to potential buyers of the benefits of a long-term view, even in
troubled times.
“The horses are very good and the response to them appears to have been very positive,” he said.
“There are plenty of buyers here. You can never have enough, but there’s been good footfall and
there’s more people to arrive.
“But we’ve made a conscientious effort to remind people that the investment decisions they make on
Sunday and Monday, and the capacity of those decisions to shape their business over the next 12 to
36 months and beyond … things might be tricky today, but some of these horses are going to be very
important in years to come.”
Contrasting Hutch’s wariness, and despite the economic turmoil stemming from Iran, the experienced
Malone said he was “expecting it to be a good sale”.
“There’s a lot of uncertainties at the moment in the world, but there’s probably not a sale that’s
in a better position to face those uncertainties than Easter,” he said.
“There’s a different line of people that buy here, whose funds maybe aren’t as affected as buyers at
lesser sales, where syndicators have to buy a horse and sell it to 30 or 40 people.
“People who come here have the money to spend or not, and they’re here for a reason - because they
want to buy. They’re not here for fun.”
The sale has of course been robbed of its expected highlight with the withdrawal four weeks ago of
the colt out of Winx (Street Cry) by Snitzel (Redoute’s Choice).
But dozens of other potential headliners will be on offer from a catalogue of undoubted quality.
They include Lot 451, the brother to Coolmore Stud Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) winner and current sire at
that farm, Switzerland (Snitzel) offered by Arrowfield Stud, the sale’s most prominent vendor with
64 entries.
Lot 308 is Widden Stud’s brother to Zougotcha (Zoustar), Golden Slipper (Gr 1, 1200m) queen Fireburn
(Rebel Dane) has a sister in the sale offered by Goodwood Farm as Lot 452, while Milburn Creek has a
half-brother to star sprinting mare Magic Time (Hellbent), as Lot 153.
Yulong’s expansive draft includes two filly first foals by their stallion Alabama Express (Redoute’s
Choice). Lot 318 is from three-time elite-level winner Forbidden Love (All Too Hard), while Lot
345’s dam is Empire Rose Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) heroine Icebath (Sacred Falls).
Three-time elite-level winner Sunlight (Zoustar) – bearer of last year’s record $3.2 million Gold
Coast sale topping filly by Home Affairs (I Am Invincible) – will this year be represented at Easter
by Lot 128 – Coolmore’s filly by Justify (Scat Daddy).
Siblings are on offer to a host of other elite-level winners including Private Eye (Al Maher),
Celestial Legend (Dundeel), Hitotsu (Maurice), Cool Archie (Cool Aza Beel) and Estijaab (Snitzel),
while Inglis catalogued the progeny of 51 Group 1-winning mares for the sale.
Malone said the quality of the catalogue was so consistently high, the wealth would be widely spread
across vendors. That could count against a matching of last year’s top price - the $3m Gai
Waterhouse and Adrian Bott and Bruce Slade’s Kestrel Thoroughbreds paid for a colt by Home Affairs
out of Shout The Bar (Not A Single Doubt).
“But when the better ones are in big numbers, which they are here, everyone gets a crack,” Malone
said. “The buyers don’t just launch into 40 or 50 of them - there’s 150 of those really good ones
here, so that money gets spread wider. So, as a vendor, you don’t get the big earn that you might be
expecting.”
Inspections ahead of the Easter sale (Credit: Inglis)
The 2026 edition could go down as the Easter of Extreme Choice (Not A Single Doubt), whose yearlings
have been turning many heads at Riverside in the past week.
Newgate Farm’s subfertile sensation has ten offspring on offer and importantly, they’re from his
first full crop after he entered the stratosphere of service fees at $275,000 (inc GST) following
his stunning first few years of runners.
Much interest is certain to also focus on the progeny of Coolmore stallion Home Affairs (I Am
Invincible), who’s explosive start to top the first season sires’ tables on both sides of the Tasman
received a resounding exclamation point through Saturday’s Golden Slipper triumph of his son Guest
House.
“There’s plenty of stallions they’ll be chasing, but Home Affairs will be right on the market now,”
Malone said.
The relatively new North enterprise’s third Easter draft comprises 13 yearlings by an array of
in-demand sires including Zoustar (Northern Meteor), Wootton Bassett (Iffraaj), Too Darn Hot
(Dubawi), Ole Kirk (Written Tycoon) and Anamoe (Street Boss).
It also has two lots by Home Affairs. Lot 192 is a filly out of Yolanda (Shamus Award), a
half-sister to the stakes-winning dam of Farnan (Not A Single Doubt), while Lot 393 is a colt out of
an unraced half-sister to two multiple stakes winners, including the dam of another one in Eneeza
(Exceed And Excel).
The sale will have a very early gauge to Home Affairs’ popularity with the well-bred Lot 1,
Coolmore’s daughter of elite victor O’Marilyn (O’Reilly), the joint top filly on the 2013-14 New
Zealand 2YO free handicap.
Coolmore offers five other of the 14 Homes Affairs yearlings on offer including Lot 165, a
colt out of Twinkle (Galileo), a sister to Epsom Derby hero Anthony Van Dyck and a half-sister to
the Group 1-winning Bounding (Lonhro), New Zealand’s Champion Sprinter of 2013-14.
The Jerrys Plains farm also presents Lot 384, a filly out of Lake Geneva (Fastnet Rock), a sister to
Ennis Hill, the stakes-winning dam of Australia’s Champion 2YO Filly of 2022-23, Learning To Fly
(Justify).
Also from Home Affairs’ selection is Lot 441, a Longwood Thoroughbred Farm colt out of a winning
three-quarter sister to Eloping (Choisir), the five-time stakes winning dam of dual Group 1 victor
In Secret (I Am Invincible).
The sale features progeny of 64 stallions headed by the late, great Snitzel (Redoute’s Choice),
who’s the most represented sire with 43 entries from his penultimate crop, ahead of I Am Invincible
(Invincible Spirit) with 41 and Zoustar with 35.

Aeliana comes out on top of Tancred thriller
Trevor Marshallsea
ANZ News
Aeliana (Credit: bradleyphotos.com.au)
If Autumn Glow (The Autumn Sun) wasn’t around, Aeliana (Castevecchio) would be close to being hailed
as Australian racing’s superstar mare.
But a week after scoring her second elite victory, Chris Waller’s other great current female showed
she was worthy of the lofty title herself when she scored her most stirring triumph to date in
Saturday’s Tancred Stakes (Gr 1, 2400m) at Rosehill.
Last autumn, Star Thoroughbreds’ $180,000 Karaka purchase took the breath away in beating the boys
by 5.16 lengths in the Australian Derby (Gr 1, 2400m).
Last week, she showed her fighting qualities with a 0.3-length victory in the WFA Ranvet Stakes (Gr
1, 2000m) when she wore down stablemate Lindermann (Lonhro) - a redoubtable Group 1 winner but
perhaps short of the top echelon.
Backed up for Sydney’s major WFA staying test on Saturday, she confronted a bone fide top-rater in
William Haggas’ English raider Dubai Honour (Pride Of Dubai), here for a third time in quest of his
fourth Australian elite title - to go with his other one in the Grand Prix de Saint Cloud (Gr 1,
2400m) - and back-to-back Tancreds.
With Aeliana strongly backed into $1.70 favouritism, and Dubai Honour a $3.60 second elect, the
stage was set for an engrossing battle between the four-year-old mare and the eight-year-old
gelding, and what transpired didn’t disappoint.
Contrasting his three previous Australian wins, Tom Marquand jumped Dubai Honour to the lead from
the widest gate of eight. James McDonald on Aeliana didn’t let him out of his sights, sitting two
lengths behind, outside the third horse.
Marquand sought to catch his rivals off-guard, calling for his mount’s effort at the 600 metres.
Straightening for home he led the mare by four lengths, as McDonald roused Aeliana for the fight.
Dubai Honour still led by three passing the 300 metres, but gave a tell as he veered out sharply.
Aeliana was behind and to his inside then, but would soon be on his outside again as Dubai Honour
returned to the fence.
The international warrior was still two lengths clear at the 100 metres, but with the crowd yelling
itself hoarse, Aeliana dug her deepest to continue her charge, wearing away until clinching victory
in the last few strides, by 0.3 lengths.
Back in third was $7 third-favourite Vauban (Galiway), a full five lengths behind Aeliana.
“It’s hard to beat a Haggas horse when they’re being set for a race as Mr Haggas does. He shows us
what training’s all about when he comes down here. We knew we had to be on top of our game,” said an
emotional Waller after his 193rd Group 1.
“Full credit to Aeliana; she’s a proper horse. She puts herself in the race, never let Dubai Honour
get out of our sights.
“He threw the task at the 600-metre mark, probably a little bit earlier than what we liked but James
just cuddled her and fortunately she was just strong to the line and we just got there in time.”
Asked about pushing ahead with the back-up, Waller said it was about “just trusting your gut
instinct more than anything”.
“Her winning the Derby was a big plus, so she’s won over the distance [2400m], so you’re not having
to tick boxes. The only box we had to tick was the seven day back-up,” he said.
“She’s eaten well. It’s been well publicised that she wasn’t a mature horse in the spring and she’s
come back a different horse now.”
McDonald, having increased his Australian record of Group 1 wins to 132, said he had benefited from
trusting Aeliana in the run.
“I had to be pretty patient with her because I learned a bit about her the other day,” he said of
her fighting Ranvet win.
“I wanted to learn from what I felt the other day. I thought even though it wasn’t ideal letting
them get so far in front, I had confidence that the mare would pick up. Once she balances up, then
she’ll find it.
“Last time Nash [Rawiller on Lindermann] rode a terrific race and had me a little bit disorganised
and I didn’t want that to happen today. Luckily we were on a superior horse and credit to the
runner-up, he gave us one hell of a fright.
“I probably would have loved to have a bit of cover but it didn’t work out that way. She was so
brave. It wasn’t my plan to give him so much of a headstart. I just waited and waited for her to be
ready and when she was ready she just exploded.
“About the 300, I could feel her really building underneath me. I just felt if I went earlier and
chased her I would’ve been just out of my comfort zone. It was a chance I was willing to take and
I’m glad it paid off.”
McDonald also credited Star Thoroughbreds boss Denise Martin, saying the syndicator performed “a
wonderful job”.
“She puts a lot of time and effort and a lot of money into the game. She brings a whole new bunch of
people,” he said.
“We’ve been lucky to have a great partnership, I respect Denise greatly and really appreciate riding
for her. She’s got a wonderful mare on her hands and she’s going to have so much fun with her.”
Marquand was also glowing in his praise of Aeliana, after an escapade that so nearly carried the
day.
“We thought we’d try something different today,” the Englishman said. “We kind of knew what would
happen if we just sat and did what we normally do. We tried it. It nearly worked. The filly is very
good. She ran him down and probably had no right to really.”
With Aeliana the 11th horse to complete the Ranvet-Tancred double, she’s now in line for the $5
million Queen Elizabeth Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m), where she’ll again take on her contemporary Autumn
Glow, who beat her into second in her first two starts of this campaign.
After the Tancred, bookmakers tightened Aeliana into joint second favouritism for the April 11 WFA
feature at $4.50, level with Sir Delius (Frankel) and behind Autumn Glow’s $1.40.
Given it will be Autumn Glow’s first try beyond 1600 metres, the QEII could transpire as another
gripping match race. But Waller remained non-committal on a run for Aeliana.
“She’s had two solid runs, we’ll see how the Queen Elizabeth fits in,” he said. “She’ll be here for
another two years so that’s a lot of races to still look forward to.”
Well-bred, in New Zealand, by Rich Hill Thoroughbreds and Nearco Stud, Aeliana comes with a strong
Star Thoroughbreds connection.
From the first-crop of Arrowfield’s Castelvecchio (Dundeel), she’s the second foal of Temolie (Star
Witness), who was placed just once in seven starts but is a half-sister to Star’s former outstanding
mare Invincibella (I Am Invincible). That mare won five stakes races for Star and Waller including
the Tatts Tiara (Gr 1, 1400m), for more than $3 million.
Temolie is also a half-sister to two other stakes winners in Secret Blaze (Sizzling) and Extreme
Flight (Extreme Choice).
The mare now has a yearling filly by Proisir (Choisir) and was covered back in Australia by
Castelvecchio’s sire Dundeel (High Chaparral) last spring.
Aeliana is one of six stakes victors, two elite winners and 62 winners for Castevecchio from 114
runners, at a 5.2 percent SWTR ratio. The nine-year-old stood at Arrowfield last season for $49,500,
up from $22,000 in 2024.
After withdrawals, Castevecchio will have four lots come under the hammer at the Inglis Australian
Easter Yearling Sale.

‘Magic filly’ Belle Cheval shines in Vinery Stud Stakes
Belle Cheval (right) (Credit: bradleyphotos.com.au)
The mighty Savabeel (Zabeel) chalked up his 36th elite winner when Belle Cheval scored a thrilling
and dramatic victory in Saturday’s Vinery Stud Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m) at Rosehill.
In one of many spine-tingling finishes on a magnificent day of racing in Sydney and Melbourne, the
New Zealand filly scored a popular win with punters as $2.60 favourite in the $750,000 feature,
giving trainer Mark Walker his 33rd Group 1 success and jockey Zac Lloyd his fifth.
It also came with ample post-race tension, before Belle Cheval was confirmed as emulating
half-brother The Bostonian (Jimmy Choux) in becoming an elite victor.
Jumping from gate two of nine under Lloyd, riding with great confidence following his Golden Slipper
(Gr 1, 1200m) win a week earlier at the same track on Guest House (Home Affairs), Belle Cheval
enjoyed a perfect trail in third on the fence, behind a moderate tempo which suited her at her first
try beyond 1600 metres.
Lloyd eased his mount off the heels of the leader and inside Dom Sutton’s $61 longshot After Summer
(The Autumn Sun) as the field headed for home, while to the outside $4.20 chance Salty Pearl
(Tagaloa) and $2.70 second elect Ohope Wins (Ocean Park) staked their claims.
Belle Cheval claimed the lead at the 200 metres but at the same time veered dramatically outward,
across the line of After Summer.
Straightened by Lloyd under vigorous whip riding, the Kiwi raider knuckled down to see out the job
as After Summer rallied late, holding just enough in reserve to beat After Summer on the bob of the
head, denying that filly’s sire The Autumn Sun a third Group 1 title in eight days by just 0.01
lengths.
In post-race drama, After Summer’s rider Billy Egan lodged a protest due to the interference in the
last furlong, but with Egan not having been forced to stop riding at any point, the objection was
dismissed.
Salty Pearl couldn’t quite match the finishing bursts of the first pair in her initial try beyond
1600 metres but held third, while Ohope Wins managed an unfulfilling fourth for her backers, 0.81
lengths off the winner.
Walker, who runs bases in New Zealand and at Cranbourne, was delighted with the victory, which
complemented another elite title across the Tasman for his stable earlier in the afternoon when
Seize The Day (I Am Invincible) took the Manawatu Sires’ Produce Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m).
Walker said the finish was scarily reminiscent of The Kiwi (Listed, 1500m) at Ellerslie on March 7,
when Well Written (Written Tycoon) drifted out on Belle Cheval in the closing stages but clung on to
win in another head-bobber.
“It was the NZB Kiwi photo all over again. She just ran around a bit, but it was great for the
filly, [breeders and co-owners] David [Archer] and Diane [Wright], and the team at home in New
Zealand prepared her really well,” Walker said.
“Everyone has been working hard in Melbourne and New Zealand. We had a Group 1 at home today and a
Group 1 here, so it’s a very special day.
“I actually thought we got beaten, whereas I’d thought we’d won the NZB Kiwi. I was glad to see the
photo.”
Walker said he would not be tempted to run Belle Cheval in the Australian Oaks (Gr 1, 2400m) on
April 11.
“She’s just a magic filly. She can have a nice break now and we’ll look forward to the spring. No
Oaks for her. She gets a rest,” said Walker, equally in awe of his filly’s sire.
“She is by Savabeel, he’s been the perennial champion sire at home for a long, long time. We’re
going to miss him severely, he’s getting on in years.”
Waikato Stud’s 24-year-old Savabeel, who stood last season for NZ$100,000 (plus GST), has 157 stakes
winners worldwide from 1,438 runners, at a superb 10.91 per cent. In Australia, he has 68 from 814
at 8.35 per cent.
Lloyd was full of praise for Belle Cheval.
“Obviously she was stepping up to 2000 but the race panned out beautifully, they didn’t go an overly
strong gallop which I didn’t want for her,” he said.
“She quickened very well and I’m very surprised to see the horse I pushed out at the top of the
straight [After Summer] come back and nearly beat me because she quickened very well away from it.
“Normally she’s known for her dazzling turn of foot whereas today she built and showed a bit of
fight. She’s a good mare and it was a tenacious win by her.”
“To do it for Mark Walker, a top New Zealand trainer, it’s very pleasing. A big thanks to him for
putting me on.”
A homebred for Archer and Wright, Belle Cheval was already a stakes winner having scored at Group 3
level at Ellerslie over 1200 metres and 1400 metres in the summer.
Extremely well bred, she’s the ninth named foal of the remarkable Keepa Cheval (Keeper), a winning
half-sister to the outstanding (King) Mufhasa (Pentire), a 10-time G1 winner on both sides of the
Tasman.
Keepa Cheval’s third foal was The Bostonian, a three-time elite victor, while seventh foal Cheval
D’Or has won a New Zealand Group 3.
The mare’s latest foal, a colt by Almanzor (Wootton Bassett), was bought from Landsdowne Park’s
draft by Tony Pike for $170,000 at Karaka this year.
Belle Cheval became the third New Zealand winner of the Vinery in four years, after Orchestral
(Savabeel) in 2024 and Prowess (Proisir) a year earlier.
Savabeel will have four lots up for grabs at the Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale in Sydney.

Light Infantry Man fights off Pride Of Jenni to take the Australian Cup
Light Infantry Man (nearside) (Credit: Racing Photos)
Another classic chapter of Australian Cup (Gr 1, 2000m) lore was written on Saturday as an epic home
straight battle ended in a Ciaron Maher quinella, as Light Infantry Man (Fast Company) overcame a
once more gallant Pride Of Jenni (Pride Of Dubai) in the Flemington feature.
The WFA test has had many gripping chapters since its 1863 inception, from Lonhro’s (Octagonal)
impossible victory in 2004, Makybe Diva’s (Desert King) triumph in world record time the following
year, and even the great boilover of 1988 when bolter Dandy Andy (Three Legs) spoiled the hyped
match race of Vo Rogue (Ivor Prince) and Bonecrusher (Pag Asa).
Saturday’s edition, on an unforgettable day of racing, was worthy of the best of them, as Light
Infantry Man edged out Pride Of Jenni at the last gasp.
In so doing, the seven-year-old French import continued a modern trend of back-to-back winners of
the race, incorporating Cascadian (New Approach) in the two years before him and the 2018-19 wins of
Harlem (Champs Elysees) - though he was the first such double winner since Vo Rogue himself in
1989-90.
Neither of Maher’s two runners was a strong fancy. Chris Waller pair Birdman (Free Eagle) and Leica
Lucy (Derryn), and Godolphin’s Tom Kitten (Harry Angel) headed the market at $2.50, $4.60 and $6
respectively.
Punters had that right, in a way. The trio finished in that order - but in fifth, sixth and seventh
- as the lesser rated Light Infantry Man, at $21, and $11 shot Pride Of Jenni fought it out.
Under her favourite rider Declan Bates aboard, Pride Of Jenni assumed her customary leader’s role
from gate 10 of 12 on a soft 7 track.
With the mare now eight, there would be no attempt for her to try another Vo Rogue-style outrageous
lead, such as that seen in her memorable Queen Elizabeth Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m) title of two years
ago. Instead Bates had her out by three or four lengths most of the way.
He’d subtly increased that to five as the mare eyed her galling quest to hold on up the long
Flemington straight, but the mission looked over as early as the 300-metre mark, as Birdman ranged
alongside, having saved ground on the rail.
Yet as soon as that had happened, Pride Of Jenni kicked again. Birdman’s challenge was smashed. But
now Light Infantry Man, having travelled in third and fourth for Harry Coffey, emerged menacingly.
Again, he looked set to run past the mare inside the 100 metres, but Pride Of Jenni fought again.
Like heavyweight boxers, the pair gave all they had over what was left, and on the line it took only
the closest of photo examinations to reveal a margin to the outside horse - by 0.02 lengths.
No one who witnessed the bout will quickly forget it, not least Maher, who fought back tears as he
heaped praise on both his runners for the spectacle they’d provided, lauding Light Infantry Man for
his two victories, but feeling for Pride Of Jenni, who while a quadruple Group 1 winner, also ran
second in the race behind Cascadian (New Approach) in 2024, by 0.25 lengths.
“I thought it was going to be a spectacular race and to be fighting it out with two of your own,
it’s pretty cool,” Maher said.
“I don’t know who I’m more proud of, the winner or the second horse.
“It’s such a shame for Jenni to run second again. It still eludes her, but she’s racing in great
heart and you never know, we may be back here with her next year. She was phenomenal.”
Maher praised Light Infantry Man’s suspended regular rider Ethan Brown for providing tips to Coffey,
who rode the gelding to his previous start fourth in Caulfield’s Peter Young Stakes (Gr 2, 1800m),
which followed his Carlyon Cup (Gr 3, 1600m) victory at the same track.
“This horse, he’s a unique horse, in the way he has to be ridden,” Maher said. “Browny understands
him well and I asked him to pass on some of that information last start, and Harry didn’t really get
it until he had finished the race.
“He rode him perfect today. The start is very important for him. He blasted him straight out of the
gates.”
Coffey was still absorbing his role in the stirring battle on dismounting, also with more words to
say about the vanquished than his own victor.
“I’m just a bit shocked because Jenni, she’s amazing,” he said. “I got on terms with her and I
thought I was going to beat her easily. What a racehorse, she fought hard.”
Of his own mount, he said: “What an incredible horse. Tough. It takes a bit to get past a mare when
she’s like that, and he did it.
“That is two years in a row where he’s come to this race under sort of extreme conditions and just
rose to the occasion when you need him at his toughest.”
Celebrating his fourth Group 1 success, Coffey thanked Brown for his tips.
“He sent me a text this morning saying, ‘I see it is going to be pretty wet. Make sure you give him
a nice warm up to the gates to let him know how open that track is because he’s a smart horse and
he’ll come to the conditions, but you just have to let him know’.
“I’ve been fortunate to ride some bloody nice horses in my career and winning races like this is
extremely special, especially when you’re from a race family.
“Tradition, history, and to put your name next to it and be a part of it, it is everything that
people want in racing and we are lucky to have it.”
Team Hayes’s Apulia (Fiorente) took third, a length off the winner.
Light Infantry Man is one of three Group 1 winners for the late Darley sire Fast Company (Danehill
Dancer).
The gelding was a €25,000 Arqana yearling, and was subsequently purchased by Blandford Bloodstock
for £82,000 from Mocklershill’s draft at the Goffs UK 2YO Breeze Up Sale.
He is one of three winners for Kyllachy (Pivotal) mare Lights On Me, herself a four-time winner and
half-sister to Listed winner Choose Your Moment (Choisir).

Storm Leopard emerges as another star for Darley’s Ghaiyyath

Darley sire Ghaiyyath (Dubawi) continued on his unstoppable way when his son Storm Leopard powered
to victory in Saturday’s Tulloch Stakes (Gr 2, 2000m) for three-year-olds at Rosehill.
Another prominent runner from the surging My Racehorse syndicate, the Team Hayes trained gelding had
been working into form in his five starts before the race after only debuting in late November.
Wins at Geelong and Ballarat were followed by a fast-finishing fifth in Caulfield’s Vobis Guineas
(1600m) on March 14, which ensured he came into Saturday’s test with strong support as a $4.20
second favourite.
Storm Leopard’s task became easier when $2.40 favourite Arcora (Justify) went amiss and was pulled
up at the 1100-metre mark, but nothing could be taken away from the winner.
Travelling in fourth place for Tommy Berry, he had the job of carting the field up to tearaway
leader Shangri La Boy (Pierro) and did so with a great tenacity, claiming his rival at the 200-metre
mark and striding away to win untroubled by 1.81 lengths.
Matthew Smith’s $81 bolter Eureka Rebel (Fierce Impact) worked home well for second, almost two
lengths to the good of Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott’s $5 shot Shangri La Boy (Pierro) and Ciaron
Maher’s $31 hope Decalogue (Extreme Choice), who turned in a strong trial for the Australian Derby
(Gr 1, 2400m).
Bookmakers wound Storm Leopard in to $6 for that $2 million feature next Saturday - behind only
Godolphin’s $3.50 co-favourites Observer, another son of Ghaiyyath, and Green Spaces (Street Boss).
Storm Leopard’s connections have a decision to make over paying the $44,000 late entry fee for the
Derby, however. Co-trainer Ben Hayes said the gelding’s original nomination was withdrawn with a
view to instead going to the South Australian Derby (Gr 1, 2500m), but he had since made a
compelling case for the Randwick Classic.
Berry joked that he might pay the fee himself if Storm Leopard’s owners and trainers demurred.
“I’m glad we went here, that was very impressive,” Hayes said. “We’re excited and we’re going to
have a good discussion about what we do with this horse in the next couple of days. We’ll definitely
consider running in the Derby.
“We took him out of the noms unfortunately. We were going to go to Adelaide. But then we changed
plans because he started to go so well. It’ll be a good discussion to have. If he pulls up well it’s
definitely something that will be considered.”
Berry was full of praise for Storm Leopard, especially due to the mid-race interference as Nash
Rawiller pulled up Arcora, who had to be euthanised after suffering a near foreleg injury.
“He just got into a lovely rhythm and then my mind was on Nash to make sure he was alright. Then
you’ve got to make sure you focus up again,” Berry said.
“He won with a lot of authority today. He had to chase a horse that was a tearaway leader. I tried
to make it as easy as I could late because I’m hoping he’ll back up in the Derby.
“I would’ve loved to have something challenge him halfway down the straight because he felt like he
was floating where he was. I had enough looks to make it as soft as I could late just in case he had
to back up.
“He’s trained by a bunch of gentlemen that send their horses to Sydney in such great order, so if
they decided to go that way it wouldn’t be an issue.
“He [Storm Leopard] is so clean winded, he’s a real stayer. The team have done a great job with him.
I only got on for the first time today so thanks to the Hayes boys for the opportunity and [I’m]
looking forward to hopefully riding him in the Derby.”
After going through his first season of Australian runners with no black type, Ghaiyyath’s progress
via his current three-year-olds has been nothing short of stunning.
Storm Leopard became his fifth Australian stakes victor from 45 runners at 11.11 per cent, alongside
two other stakes placegetters, among 15 winners overall. Worldwide he has ten stakes winners from
186 runners, at 5.4 per cent.
Ghaiyyath stood for Darley in Australia for four seasons but did not shuttle last spring, but his
success this season - marked by the fact he has two of the three top market fancies for the Derby
including dual Group 1 winner Observer - makes it a near certainty he will return this year.
“He’s done a great job so far,” Hayes said of the ten-year-old. “He’s coming out and winning
everything.
“We’re very lucky to have a horse like him [Storm Leopard] in our yard, and My Racehorse are great
supporters. Exciting times ahead.”
Bred by NSW’s Premier Bloodstock, Storm Leopard was bought for $125,000 at the 2024 Magic Millions
Gold Coast Yearling Sale by Team Hayes’s Lindsay Park, who will have placed great stock in his
second dam.
He’s the seventh and best foal of the unraced Brilliance (Street Cry), but his unraced second dam
Accessories (Singspiel) deserves blue hen ranking, being the dam of no fewer than five Group
winners.
They include three Group 1 victors in subsequent sires Helmet (Exceed And Excel), who won three, and
Epaulette (Commands), who won two, as well as current runner Pericles (Street Boss) - winner of
February’s Futurity Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m).
Accessories also threw Group 2 and Group 3 winner Pearls (Exceed And Excel), but her stakeswinner
most dear to the Hayes’s hearts would likely be Bullbars (Elusive Quality), who won only one G3 but
is the sire of Lindsay Park’s stable star Mr Brightside, his outlier star performer.
Brilliance’s colt by St Mark’s Basilica (Siyouni) sold at the Gold Coast in January for $140,000,
from Coolmore Stud’s draft to Dynamic Syndications. She now has a colt foal at foot by the same
stallion, but missed to Home Affairs (I Am Invincible) in December.

Morning Briefing
Australia
36 for Savabeel
Savabeel (Credit: Waikato Stud)
Waikato Stud patriarch Savabeel (Zabeel) advanced his outstanding record at the elite level
on Saturday when Belle Cheval (3 f ex Keepa Cheval by Keeper) delivered a dramatic victory
in the Vinery Stud Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m) at Rosehill. The win saw Belle Cheval become her
sire’s 36th individual Group 1 winner. The 24-year-old has now sired 157 stakes winners
worldwide from 1,438 runners, maintaining an exceptional strike-rate of 10.91 per cent. His
Australian record stands at 68 stakes winners from 814 runners. Belle Cheval is from a
proven Waikato family, being out of Keepa Cheval (Keeper) who is herself a half-sister to
multiple Group 1 winner Mufhasa (Pentire). Belle Cheval a half-sister to The Bostonian
(Jimmy Choux), himself a three-time Group 1 winner, as well as to Group 3 winner Cheval D’Or
(Almanzor). Already a dual Group 3 winner prior to Saturday, Belle Cheval’s rise to Group 1
level adds to Savabeel’s recent momentum and reinforces his status as one of the most
reliable sources of top-class performers in the southern hemisphere. He stood for an
unchanged fee of NZ$100,000 (plus GST) in the spring.
Ten for Ghaiyyath
Darley’s former shuttler Ghaiyyath (Dubawi) brought up his tenth individual stakes winner on
Saturday when Storm Leopard (3 g ex Brilliance by Street Cry) landed the Tulloch Stakes (Gr
2, 2000m) at Rosehill. Storm Leopard is from Ghaiyyath’s first southern hemisphere-bred
crop, conceived during the world champion’s four-season stint at Darley’s Northwood Park in
Victoria. From 45 runners in Australia, the son of Dubawi (Dubai Millennium) has now sired
five stakes winners at an impressive 11.11 per cent strike-rate, alongside two additional
stakes placegetters. Globally, Ghaiyyath’s tally stands at ten stakes winners from 186
runners. Bred by Premier Bloodstock, Storm Leopard was purchased by Lindsay Park for
$125,000 at the 2024 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale. He is out of the unraced
Street Cry (Machiavellian) mare Brilliance, a daughter of influential blue hen Accessories
(Singspiel), whose progeny include Group 1-winning sires Helmet (Exceed And Excel) and
Epaulette (Commands), as well as recent Futurity Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) scorer Pericles
(Street Boss). Ghaiyyath currently stands at Darley’s Kildangan Stud in Ireland at a fee of
€20,000 (approx. AU$33,472) and has not returned for 2026.
Five for Palace Pier
Another of Darley’s former shuttlers, Palace Pier (Kingman), continued his bright start in
Australia when Southend (2 c ex So We Are by So You Think) produced a commanding performance
to land the Baillieu Handicap (Gr 3, 1400m) at Rosehill on Saturday. Trained by Gerald Ryan
and Sterling Alexiou, the two-year-old colt maintained his unbeaten record with a 1.2-length
victory over Persian Wonder (Hello Youmzain), stamping himself as a leading contender for
next month’s Champagne Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) at Randwick. Southend, who broke his maiden at
Newcastle earlier this month, is now one of two stakes performers from just three runners in
Australia from Palace Pier’s sole southern hemisphere-bred crop. Purchased for $425,000 from
Mill Park Stud’s draft at the 2025 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale, Southend is the
second highest-priced Australian yearling by his sire. He is out of Listed winner So We Are
(So You Think), a three-quarter sister to Group 2 winner and Twin Hills sire Peltzer (So You
Think). Palace Pier shuttled to Australia for one season in 2022, covering 97 mares at a fee
of $55,000 (inc GST). The son of Kingman (Invincible Spirit) is currently standing his fifth
season at Darley’s Dalham Hall Stud in Newmarket at a fee of £32,000 (approx AU$61,693).
23 for Shalaa
Woodside Park Stud sire Shalaa (Invincible Spirit) registered his 23rd individual stakes
winner when the aptly named Roselyn’s Star (4 g ex Dual Star by Starcraft) landed Saturday’s
Star Kingdom Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) at Rosehill. Trained by John O'Shea and Tom Charlton, the
four-year-old gelding prevailed in a thrilling three-way finish up the inside rail under
Regan Bayliss, scoring by 0.4 lengths from Gangsta Granny (Written Tycoon) with Signor
Tortoni (Too Darn Hot) another 0.3 lengths adrift in third. Bred by Arrowfield Pastoral Pty
Ltd and Redbank Pty Ltd, Roselyn’s Star sold to John O’ Shea’s Ladies Racing Syndicate for
$220,000 at the 2023 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale. He is a brother to the
Listed-placed Shalstar and the best of four winners out of their Listed-placed dam Dual Star
(Starcraft). It was a Group 3 double at Rosehill on the day for Shalaa, with Welwal also
striking in the Doncaster Prelude (Gr 3, 1500m). The son of Invincible Spirit (Green Desert)
covered 51 mares last spring at an unchanged fee of $19,800 (inc GST).
Group 1 looms for Idle Flyer after Emancipation success
Matthew Smith’s in-form mare Idle Flyer (4 m Dundeel - Progressive by Street Cry) will press
on to Group 1 company after producing a dominant performance in Saturday’s Emancipation
Stakes (Gr 2, 1500m) at Rosehill. The four-year-old, bred and sold by Torryburn Stud,
maintained her perfect second-up record with a convincing 0.8-length victory under Zac
Lloyd, taking her tally to four wins from four attempts at the stage. Settled midfield, she
peeled out at the top of the straight and quickly asserted to score with authority over
Blindedbythelight (Shamus Award) with Firestorm (Satono Aladdin) another 1.1 lengths back in
third. Smith confirmed the $1 million Queen of the Turf Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) at Randwick on
April 11 as her next target, confident there is further improvement to come. “That’s our
next step. She’ll come on again, she’s a big mare and should be at her peak in two weeks,”
he said. “There’s more improvement in her yet.” A $70,000 Inglis Classic purchase, Idle
Flyer now boasts seven wins from 14 starts and earnings of $578,425.
Wootton Verni impresses in Neville Sellwood romp
Wootton Verni (Credit: Sortpix)
Chris Waller’s progressive import Wootton Verni (5 g Wootton Bassett - Vernie by Kendargent)
boosted his Australian record with a dominant victory in Saturday’s Neville Sellwood Stakes
(Gr 3, 2000m) at Rosehill. Ridden by Tommy Berry, the gelding proved too strong in the
$300,000 contest, powering clear to score by 2.7 lengths over the William Haggas-trained
international raider Caviar Heights (Sea The Stars), registering his second stakes success
in Australia. There was a further 0.3 lengths back to Portland (Dubawi) in third. Waller
indicated the race was a deliberate confidence-building step after the five-year-old fell
short of expectations last start, having initially been aimed at the Tancred Stakes (Gr 1,
2400m). “He’s been here a while now and found great form in the spring… he’s a talented
horse,” Waller said. “We’ve come back a grade just to give him some confidence, so he’s got
that confidence back.” The victory raises the question of whether Wootton Verni can now
return to the top level, with Waller flagging the Queen Elizabeth Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m) as a
potential target. Wootton Verni has now won eight of his 20 starts and continues to thrive
since joining Waller’s yard, having previously shown stakes form during the spring. The race
also marked the Australian debut of Yulong’s high-profile mare Barnavara (Calyx), who
finished an encouraging fourth after settling at the rear. A Group winner in France and a
4.8 million guineas purchase at last year’s Tattersalls December Mares Sale, she was
unsuited by the tempo after missing the start.
Welwal pops back up in Doncaster Prelude
The Mick Price and Michael Kent Jnr-trained Welwal (7 g Shalaa - Cheriearch by Arch) stamped
himself as a Doncaster Mile (Gr 1, 1600m) contender with a sharp victory in the Doncaster
Prelude at Rosehill on Saturday. Ridden by in-form jockey Zac Lloyd fresh from his Golden
Slipper (Gr 1, 1200m) success aboard Guest House (Home Affairs) a week earlier, the
seven-year-old settled off the speed from gate two as Sandpaper (Snitzel) set a strong tempo
up front. Still with work to do on the turn, Welwal unleashed a decisive sprint, sweeping
past his rivals at the 200 metres before drawing clear to score by 1.5 lengths. Feroce
(Super Seth) was second, with Lord Penman (Contributer) another 0.7 lengths back in third.
Co-trainer Mick Price indicated a start in next week’s Doncaster Mile remains under
consideration, pending discussions with connections. “He’s been unlucky…the races haven’t
worked out for him,” Price said. “The horse could back up, he’s right in the middle of his
fitness.”
14 for Satono Aladdin
Rich Hill Stud’s Satono Aladdin (Deep Impact) recorded his 14th individual stakes winner -
and fifth in Australia - when promising juvenile filly Satono Glow (2 f ex Electrode by
Pins) produced a dominant display in Saturday’s Thoroughbred Breeders’ Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m)
at Flemington. Another stakes winner on the day for John O’Shea and Tom Charlton, the
two-year-old maintained her unbeaten record with a commanding three-length victory, building
on an impressive debut success at Warwick Farm earlier this month. Ridden by Jamie Melham,
Satono Glow settled just off the speed before being angled into the clear at the 300 metres.
She quickly asserted in testing conditions and surged away from her rivals, relishing the
Heavy 8 surface to put the result beyond doubt in a matter of strides. Salann (Shamus Award)
was second, with Gin Twist (Home Affairs) close up in third. Connections indicated potential
targets during The Championships for Satono Glow. A NZ$260,000 purchase from the Windsor
Park Stud draft at the 2025 NZB Karaka Yearling Sale, the filly is out of Electrode (Pins),
a half-sister to Group 3 winner So Wotif (Iffraaj) and stakes-winner Bonniegirl (Darci
Brahma). She is also a half-sister to Group 2-placed Kitty Flash (Ace High).
Two for Peltzer
Twin Hills Stud’s emerging sire Peltzer (So You Think) registered his second individual
stakes winner on Saturday when Thanks Gorgeous (3 f ex Localchella by Exceed And Excel)
delivered a determined victory in the VRC Sprint Classic (Listed, 1200m) at Flemington.
Prepared by Mark and Levi Kavanagh, the filly edged out Tycoon Star (Written Tycoon) by 0.1
lengths in a head-bobbing finish under Craig Williams, relishing testing conditions to
secure her first black-type success. Already Group-placed in the spring, she has been a
model of consistency this preparation and now boasts three wins and five placings from 12
starts, with earnings beyond $550,000. Bred by Cityview Farm, Thanks Gorgeous is the first
foal and winner out of Exceed And Excel (Danehill) mare Localchella, a daughter of US
stakes-winner Coachella Valley (Even The Score) from a deep international family that
includes Grosser Preis von Baden (Gr 1, 2400m) winner Zagrey (Zarak). Connections indicated
the filly could now target further stakes opportunities in Adelaide, with her affinity for
racing and preference to remain in work likely to shape her immediate campaign. A Group
2-winning son of So You Think (High Chaparral), Peltzer covered 66 mares during the 2025
season at $11,000 (inc GST).
Whisky On The Hill lands Cup spot in Roy Higgins
Whisky On The Hill (Credit: Racing Photos)
Whisky On The Hill (6 g Ribchester - Ninja Lady by Nayef) secured a coveted ballot-free
entry into the Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) with his determined victory in the Roy Higgins
Quality (Listed, 2600m) at Flemington on Saturday, providing an emotional milestone for
trainer Glen Thompson. The $6 chance was sent forward by Damian Lane and, despite appearing
vulnerable late, dug deep to hold off $2 favourite Litzdeel (Dundeel) by 0.8 lengths, with
Auckland Cup (Gr 2, 2300m) winner Paradise Storm (Masked Marvel) a further 0.7 lengths away
in third. The result capped a significant turnaround for Thompson, who has rebuilt his
stable from just a handful of horses following the passing of his former training partner,
Mike Moroney. Whisky On The Hill has since emerged as the headline act of his growing
Flemington operation. “It’s just good to be doing him proud,” Thompson said. Connections are
now weighing up a potential tilt at the Sydney Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) next month as part of the
gelding’s Cup preparation, with Thompson keen to test him over the two-mile trip. “I don’t
see why not…the Melbourne Cup is a long way away,” he said. Lane praised Thompson’s handling
of the stayer, who overcame a disrupted preparation to peak on the day. “He just had him
spot on…a really good horse, very effective at these trips,” the winning jockey said.
Corniche back in winner’s enclosure after drought
The Shawn Mathrick-trained Corniche (5 g Fastnet Rock - Montsegur by Dawn Approach) ended
his ten-month win drought when gamely landing Saturday’s Bob Hoysted Handicap (Listed,
1000m) at Flemington. The five-year-old surged home on the rail in the final stages under
Zac Spain to deny stablemate Unflinching (I Am Invincible) by 0.8 lengths, with Midwest
(Zoustar) another 0.4 lengths back in third. Purchased by his trainer for $85,000 via Inglis
Digital last November, the gelding was posting his first win since taking out the Gold Coast
Guineas (Gr 3, 1200m) at the Sunshine Coast last May. "When I first got him I thought I was
really going to struggle and that I'd done my money,” Mathrick said. “Bad knees, bad feet,
the horse was crippled. There's so much work gone into him and we've changed a few things
up. A lot of beach work and the horse has thrived on it. First and second, I love both of
those horses so it is terrific.” On Unflinching, Mathrick added: "He's a warhorse. He's had
a bleed, his form was off. I was screaming for him at the start but I could see Zac trying
to get out on Corniche and I knew he was going to finish hard." The winning trainer said
Corniche’s next outing could be in the Country Discovery, weather dependent. "Soft tracks
are going to be the trick for Corniche,” he said. “We bought him for a Goodwood or a
Wangoom. Looks like that could be on the cards."
Two for Dirty Work
Widden Stud-based sire Dirty Work (Written Tycoon) scored his second individual stakes
winner courtesy of Never Ordinary’s (2 f ex Satin Sashes by More Than Ready) victory in
Saturday’s Dequetteville Stakes (Listed, 1050m) at Morphettville. Trained by Byron
Cozamanis, the filly defeated Verzain (Zousain) by a length with Almost An Angel (So You
Think) finishing a further 1.5 lengths back in third. A $1,250 purchase from the Inglis
Digital February Sale in 2025, the filly is out of the winning More Than Ready (Southern
Halo) mare Satin Sashes and hails from the same family as TJ Smith Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m)
winner Master Of Design (Redoute’s Choice) and South African Grade 1 scorer Suntagonal
(Octagonal). Dirty Work stood the 2025 breeding season at a fee of $13,200 (inc GST).
40 for Dundeel
In winning Saturday’s Clare Lindop Stakes (Listed, 1600m) at Morphettville, the Lindsay
Park-trained Stung (3 f ex Rare Ransom by Oasis Dream) provided Arrowfield Stud-based sire
Dundeel (High Chaparral) with his 40th individual stakes winner. The three-year-old filly
finished strongly, pulling 1.8 lengths clear of the runner-up Oak Park Maddison (Lean Mean
Machine). Synthesise (Toronado) was another length away in third. Bred and raced by Rupert
Legh, the filly is out of the Group 2-placed winner Rare Ransom (Oasis Dream) and she is
also the dam of Mornington Cup (Listed, 2400m) winner Aktau (Teofilo). Dundeel will be
represented by 25 lots at the Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale. Dundeel stood the 2025
breeding season at a fee of $88,000 (inc GST).
24 for Pride Of Dubai
Coolmore’s often underrated stallion Pride Of Dubai (Street Cry) chalked up his 24th
individual stakes winner when Shadhavar (4 m ex Cross Legend by Sebring) proved too strong
for her rivals in Saturday’s Matrice Stakes (Listed, 1200m) at Morphettville. Trained by Tom
Dabernig, the mare defeated Power Beau (Brazen Beau) by a length with another 1.6 lengths
back to Arkansaw Kid (Harry Angel) in third. The mare was picked up by her owners Prime
Thoroughbreds for $85,000 at the Magic Millions Adelaide Yearling Sale in 2023 from The
Chase draft. Out of the winning Sebring (More Than Ready) mare Cross Legend, Shadhavar is a
half-sister to dual winner Have A Crack (Zoustar). Cross Legend herself is a half-sister to
Group 2-winning pair Thromum (Snitzel) and Cythera (I Am Invincible). Pride Of Dubai stood
the 2025 breeding season for a fee of $22,000 (inc GST).

19 for I Am Invincible
Seize The Day (2 c ex Zimaretto by Anabaa) became the 19th individual elite-level winner,
and 124th individual stakes winner, for Yarraman Park stalwart I Am Invincible (Invincible
Spirit) when he dominated in Saturday’s Manawatu Sires’ Produce Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) at
Trentham. Seize The Day was a $600,000 Magic Millions purchase from Yarraman Park for Te
Akau Racing principal David Ellis, in partnership with Kia Ora Stud. He is a full-brother to
Group 3 winner California Zimbol and a half-brother to stakes winners From Within (Not A
Single Doubt) and Cruden Bay (Not A Single Doubt) being out of the Anabaa (Danzig) mare
Zimaretto. After withdrawals, I Am Invincible has 36 lots set come under the hammer at the
Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale.
Two for Ace High
Ace High (Credit: Rich Hill Stud)
Rich Hill Stud stallion Ace High (High Chaparral) chalked up his second individual
elite-level winner and fifth individual stakes winner when She’s A Dealer (4 m ex Say No
More by Pentire) landed the New Zealand Thoroughbred Breeders’ Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) at
Trentham. Out of the two-time Group 1-winning Pentire (Be My Guest) mare Say No More, who
also scored in the New Zealand Thoroughbred Breeders’ Stakes, She’s A Dealer was bred by
John and Colleen Thompson under their Rich Hill Thoroughbreds banner and they race the mare
with Mark Neill, Richard Kidd, Ian Hart and Peter Merton. Ace High stood the 2025 breeding
season at a fee of $15,000 (plus GST).
14 for Time Test
Former Little Avondale Stud shuttler Time Test (Dubawi) sired his 14th individual stakes
winner when the Kylie Hoskin-trained Geneva (3 c ex Charli Rose by Pierro) scored in
Saturday’s Manawatu Classic (Gr 3, 2100m) at Trentham. Ridden by Rory Hutchings, the
three-year-old colt proved 1.5 lengths too strong for Circus Trix (Circus Maximus) with King
Jakkal (King Of Comedy) narrowly behind in third. Geneva was bred and is raced by Jomara
Bloodstock’s John, Mark and Racheal Carter, and is out of the winning Pierro (Lonhro) mare
Charli Rose, herself a half-sister to Group 2 performer Mr Mojo Risin’ (Deep Field). Time
Test now stands at the Turkish Jockey Club.
Hoskin enjoys first stakes winner with Geneva
Kylie Hoskin trained her first stakes winner on Saturday courtesy of Geneva’s victory in the
Group 3 Manawatu Classic and she revealed her delight at the career-high success. “It is so
exciting, I love this horse,” Hoskin said. “The owners have given me the opportunity with
him and I just couldn’t be more pleased. When he is out in front like that, I worry he is
doing it a bit hard and he sets it up for those horses to come from behind. I have always
rated his ability, so to see him do it like that today was really exciting.” Hoskin also
revealed that a trip to Australia for a crack at May’s South Australian Derby (Gr 1, 2500m)
could be on the cards for her three-year-old colt. “We are thinking about going to Aussie
with him,” she said. “Although he has done a lot of racing he does really well, he eats well
and comes through his races well.”
He’s A Doozy recaptures his best form in Awapuni Gold Cup
The Lisa Latta-trained He’s A Doozy (8 g Zacinto - The Dewdrop by O’Reilly) secured a fourth
career stakes success, and first since his 2023 Thorndon Mile victory, when landing
Saturday’s Awapuni Gold Cup (Gr 2, 2100m) at Trentham. Ridden by Kelly Myers, the
eight-year-old gelding defeated Opawa Jack (War Decree) by 1.3 lengths at odds of $26. There
was a further 0.7 lengths back to the third-placed Crouch (Tarzino). “He is such a stable
favourite and it is a really emotional win as Neville Thompson [part-owner] passed away
three weeks ago,” Latta said. “Neville just loved him and he would have been riding him home
in the straight. It is great to get another win today as he looked fantastic and his work
was as good as ever on Wednesday. He just loves Wellington, he got left alone and everything
just went his way.”
Archaic Smile delivers in Flying Handicap
Archaic Smile (Credit: Race Images)
Archaic Smile (4 m Saxon Warrior - On The Ball by So You Think) doubled her career stakes
tally on Saturday when she narrowly took out the Flying Handicap (Listed, 1400m) at
Trentham. Ridden by Masa Hashizume for trainer Hollie Wynyard, the four-year-old daughter of
Saxon Warrior (Deep Impact) defeated Churchillian (Churchill) by 0.1 lengths with a further
length back to December (Shamexpress) in third place. “She loves the big corner here
[Trentham] as she is not quite as good around the tight, turning tracks,” Wynyard said.
“Every time she goes out you can’t be disappointed as she gives it everything and I knew she
would get another stakes win along the way and I’m just rapt she got it today. I said to
Masa not to get too far off them and when he got her to the fence I was thinking well that’s
a ten out of ten effort. I know how tough Churchillian is to get past when she is in front,
so our little girl gave it everything she had.”

Eight for Rey De Oro
Shadai Stallion Station’s Rey De Oro (King Kamehameha) registered his eighth individual
stakes winner on Saturday when My Universe (4 c ex Church Choir by Neo Universe) landed the
Nikkei Sho (Gr 2, 2500m) at Nakayama. Ridden by Norihiro Yokoyama for trainer Koshiro Take,
the four-year-old entire defeated Mikuni Inspire (Admire Mars) by a length and a half with a
further neck back to Rousham Park (Harbinger) in third place. Out of the winning Neo
Universe (Sunday Silence) mare Church Choir, My Universe is a brother to winner Pellegrini
and a half-brother to fellow winners Church Square (Lord Kanaloa) and Quattrocento (Smart
Falcon). Rey De Oro is standing at a fee of ¥2,000,000 (approx. AU$18,120).
11 for Isla Bonita
Altramuz (3 c ex Dejimano Hana by Screen Hero) became the 11th individual stakes winner for
Shadai Stallion Station’s Isla Bonita when scoring in the Mainichi Hai (Gr 3, 1800m) at
Hanshin on Saturday. The Kenji Nonaka-trained colt was ridden by Mirai Iwata and defeated
Lorbeerkranz (Satono Diamond) by three-quarters of a length. There was a further three
lengths back to the third-placed Kafuji Emmental (Poetic Flare). Altramuz is the only
winning foal from two out of the winning Screen Hero (Grass Wonder) mare Dejimano Hana. Isla
Bonita is standing at a fee of ¥1,500,000 (approx. AU$13,590).

Six for Too Darn Hot
Darley’s shuttle sensation Too Darn Hot (Dubawi) sired his sixth individual elite-level
winner when Native Approach (5 g ex Sperry by Shamardal) sprang a shock in Saturday’s Al
Quoz Sprint (Gr 1, 1200m) at Meydan. Ridden by Connor Beasley for local trainer Ahmad Bin
Harmash, the five-year-old gelding pounced late to deny Japanese raider Lugal (Duramente) by
a neck. There was a further length back to 2024 Golden Eagle (1500m) runner-up and last
year’s Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes (Gr 1, 6f) winner Lazzat (Territories) in third.
Native Approach is closely related to Group 3 winner Discovery Island (Dubawi) and a
half-brother to winner Theatre Honours (Kingman) being out of the Listed-winning Shamardal
(Giant’s Causeway) mare Sperry, herself a half-sister to Listed winner Dunelight (Desert
Sun). The Too Darn Hot / Shamardal cross has yielded 13 winners and Native Approach is the
headline act of three stakes winners bred on this nick. Too Darn Hot returned to Darley’s
Kelvinside base for the 2025 southern hemisphere breeding season at a fee of $275,000 (inc
GST). He has 13 lots (after withdrawals) catalogued at the Inglis Australian Easter
Yearling.
12 for Not This Time
Magnitude (4 c ex Rockadelic by Bernardini) became the 12th individual elite-level winner
for Taylor Made Farm stalwart Not This Time (Giant’s Causeway) when dominating proceedings
in Saturday’s Dubai World Cup (Gr 1, 2000m) at Meydan. Ridden by Jose Ortiz for trainer
Steve Asmussen, the four-year-old colt made all of the running and stayed on resolutely
inside the final furlong to beat Forever Young (Real Steel) by a length. There was a further
two and three-quarter lengths back to Meydaan (Frankel) in third place. Magnitude is the
only winning foal from five to come out of the Bernardini (A.P. Indy) mare Rockadelic, who
herself is out of the dual Grade 1-winning mare Octave (Unbridled’s Song). Not This Time is
standing at a fee of US$250,000 (approx. AU$363,100).
Two for Dee Majesty
Wonder Dean (3 c ex Wonder Siang Praw by Wonder Acute) became the second individual stakes
winner for his sire Dee Majesty (Deep Impact) when landing Saturday’s UAE Derby (Gr 2,
1900m) at Meydan. Ridden by Cristian Demuro for trainer Daisuke Takayanagi, the Japanese
raider overhauled the front-running Six Speed (Not This Time) inside the closing stages and
ran out a two and a quarter lengths winner. There was a further six lengths back to the
fellow Japanese-trained runner Pyromancer (Pyro). Wonder Dean is the only winning foal from
three out of the winning Wonder Acute (Charismatic) mare Wonder Siang Praw. Dee Majesty is
standing at Arrow Stud for a fee of ¥500,000 (approx. AU$4,530).
UAE: World’s best Calandagan reigns supreme in Sheema Classic
Caladagan (5 g Gleneagles - Calayana by Sinndar) was another high-class operator to make a
winning return to action on Saturday’s Dubai World Cup card at Meydan when comfortably
scoring in the Sheema Classic (Gr 1, 2410m). The Francis Graffard-trained five-year-old, who
was officially crowned the World’s Best Racehorse in 2025, was ridden by usual partner
Mickael Barzalona and chased down long-time leader and 2023 Caulfield Cup (Gr 1, 2400m)
runner-up West Wind Blows (Teofilo) to run out a three-quarter lengths winner. There was a
further three and a half lengths back to 2024 Hong Kong Vase (Gr 1, 2400m) winner
Giavellotto (Mastercraftsman) in third place, as the winner was the only runner to make
significant headway from the rear of the five-runner field.
UAE: Ombudsman a class above in comfortable Dubai Turf victory
The John and Thady Gosden-trained Ombudsman (5 h Night Of Thunder - Syndicate by Dansili)
added a third Group 1 to his tally when proving much the best in Saturday’s Dubai Turf (Gr
1, 1800m) at Meydan. Ridden by usual partner William Buick, the five-year-old son of Night
Of Thunder (Dubawi) travelled well entering the home straight and, having hit the front
approaching the final 200 metres, kept on well to readily hold off Quddwah (Kingman),
beating that rival by two lengths. There was a further head back to the third-placed Andreas
Vesalius (Caravaggio).
UAE: Successive Golden Shaheen wins for Dark Saffron
Having landed the Golden Shaheen in 2025, the Ahmad Bin Harmash-trained Dark Saffron (4 g
Flameaway - Meadow Saffron by Military) registered back-to-back wins in the Group 1 contest
when scoring by a length and three-quarters on Saturday. Ridden by Connor Beasley, who
alongside the trainer was enjoying a top-flight double on the card, the four-year-old
defeated Bentornato (Valiant Minister) by a length and three-quarters. There was a further
two and three-quarter lengths back to Cats By Five (Audible) in third.
UAE: Banishing swoops late to land Godolphin Mile
The United States struck first in the thoroughbred contests on Saturday’s Dubai World Cup
card at Meydan when the David Jacobson-trained Banishing (6 g Ghostzapper - Dowager by A.P.
Indy) landed the Godolphin Mile (Gr 2, 1600m). Ridden by Silvestre De Sousa, the
six-year-old gelding ran on strongly inside the final 200 metres to overhaul long-time
pacesetter Commissioner King (Commissioner) and score by two and a quarter lengths. There
was a further three-quarters of a length back to the third-placed Mendelssohn Bay
(Mendelssohn).
UAE: Progressive Fairy Glen takes out Dubai Gold Cup
Simon and Ed Crisford’s progressive mare Fairy Glen (5 m Farhh - Natural Scenery by Dubawi)
made it three stakes wins on the bounce when she proved too strong for the boys in
Saturday’s Dubai Gold Cup (Gr 2, 3200m) at Meydan. Ridden by Mickael Barzalona, the
five-year-old daughter of Farrh (Pivotal) ran on well down the far-side rail to deny Caballo
De Mar (Phoenix Of Spain) by a half-length. There was a further three and a quarter lengths
back to Al Nayyir (Dubawi) in third place, while Australian Bloodstock’s Al Riffa (Wootton
Bassett), who ran seventh in November’s Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m), could only manage sixth
of the ten runners as the odds-on favourite.
30 for Blue Point
Former Darley shuttler Blue Point (Shamardal) chalked up his 30th individual stakes winner
on Saturday when the Richard Hannon-trained Aramram (5 h ex Queen’s Pearl by Exceed And
Excel) scored in the Cammidge Trophy Stakes (Listed, 6f) at Doncaster. Ridden by Sean Levey,
the five-year-old entire battled well inside the final furlong to beat Jasour (Havana Grey)
by a length. There was a further length and a quarter back to Caburn (Twilight Son) in third
place. A half-brother to winners Al Arbeed (Night Of Thunder), Royal Musketeer (Acclamation)
and Al Muzn (Oasis Dream), Aramram is out of the winning Exceed And Excel (Danehill) mare
Queen’s Pearl, herself a half-sister to the Listed-placed winner Samminder (Red Ransom).
Blue Point shuttled to Darley’s Northwood Park base for a fee of $44,000 (inc GST) in 2025.
UK: OTI’s Docklands far too classy in Doncaster Mile
OTI Racing’s heroic Queen Anne Stakes (Gr 1, 1m) victor Docklands (6 h Massaat - Icky Woo by
Mark Of Esteem) made a triumphant return to action on Saturday when comfortably landing the
Doncaster Mile Stakes (Listed, 1m) at Doncaster. Ridden by Jamie Spencer for trainer Harry
Eustace, the six-year-old entire came to win his race entering the final furlong and, after
hitting the front, was eased down near the line to a length and a half victory over Volterra
(Farhh). There was a further three and three-quarter lengths back to Excellent Believe (Make
Believe) in third. A return to Royal Ascot for a defence of his Queen Anne Stakes crown is
the main target for Docklands this campaign, following a return to Hong Kong next month.
Six for Pinatubo
In what turned out to be a good day globally for Darley stallions, their shuttler Pinatubo
(Shamardal) sired his sixth individual stakes winner when Pina Sonata (4 f ex Moonlight
Sonata by Galileo) proved too strong for her rivals in the Snowdrop Fillies’ Stakes (Listed,
1m) at Kempton. Ridden by Daniel Muscutt for trainer James Fanshawe, the four-year-old filly
defeated Never Let Go (No Nay Never) by a length and a half with a further head back to
Cathedral (Too Darn Hot) in third. A half-sister to Group 3 winner Sky Safari (Zoustar),
Pina Sonata is out of the winning Galileo (Sadler’s Wells) mare Moonlight Sonata, herself
closely related to Group 2 winner Western Hymn (High Chaparral). Pinatubo stood the 2025
southern hemisphere breeding season at Darley’s Kelvinside base for a fee of $38,500 (inc
GST).
IRE: Back-to-back Gladness Stakes wins for Big Gossey
Having landed the contest in 2025 by a half-length, Big Gossey (9 g Gutaifan - Toy Show by
Danehill) returned to Saturday’s Gladness Stakes (Listed, 7f) at the Curragh to make it
back-to-back wins in the Listed contest. Ridden by Billy Lee for trainer Charles O’Brien,
the nine-year-old gelding defeated East Hampton (Cracksman) by a length and a half with a
further neck back to Neolithic (Sioux Nation) in third. The Aidan O’Brien-trained Albert
Einstein (Wootton Bassett), who had been as short as 7-2 for May’s English 2,000 Guineas (Gr
1, 1m) ahead of his return, could only manage sixth of the ten runners.

Natalma backs US bloodlines in six-lot Inglis Easter draft

Charlotte Chittick and John Ferguson inspect yearlings at the Easter sale (Credit: Inglis)
John Ferguson’s Natalma Bloodstock will take its latest step into the Australian yearling market at
the Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale, with a select group of six to be offered as part of
Arrowfield Stud’s draft.
Founded in July 2021 and named after the dam of the truly breed-shaping sire Northern Dancer
(Nearctic), Natalma was first active in the US and the UK and made its first foray as a trader in
Australia at the 2022 Magic Millions Broodmare Sale.
That occasion saw the operation sell three European-bred mares – Bawaady (Dubawi), Under Wraps
(Kingman) and Elvic (Siyouni) – for a combined $2.1 million, going for $700,000 apiece.
The former chief executive to Godolphin, Ferguson aims to nurture a bloodstock portfolio that
appeals across global markets, and has curated another internationally attractive group to go
through the ring at Riverside in Sydney.
American bloodlines have proved a success story in Australia in the past. Group 1 winners Russian
Revolution, Little Brose and King Colorado are just a small few among the leading performers in the
country whose dams were bred in the US.
Five of Natalma’s six yearlings on offer are out of American mares – which Ferguson told ANZ News is
a business model he believes can be successful in Australia.
“I think there's no question that fast American bloodlines and pedigrees have proven that they work
internationally,” he said. “I think that's just an accepted fact, and therefore it makes sense that
we have mares that are attractive – they're the right shape, they've got good limbs and they're
athletic. We believe that they're the right type to produce nice horses in Australia.”
Among the standouts of the draft are Lots 176 and 230, a pair of chestnut colts in the mould of
their champion sire Gun Runner (Candy Ride).
The former is the first foal from Listed winner Violenza (Violence), while the latter is the third
foal out of the stakes-winning juvenile Been Studying Her (Fast Anna), herself a half-sister to
Graded winners Sneaking Out (Indian Evening) and Grecian Fire (Unusual Heat) as well as to stakes
winner Smuggler’s Run (Straight Fire).
Violenza was a US$210,000 pickup for Natalma at the 2022 edition of the Keeneland Breeding Stock
Sale, while the operation parted with US$330,000 to secure Been Studying Her at the same sale the
year before.
While yet to have a runner in the southern hemisphere, there seems to be market confidence behind
Gun Runner - who covered a handful of mares at his Lane’s End Farm base on southern hemisphere time
- in Australasia, with all four of his yearlings offered in 2025 selling at an average of $408,750
across Inglis Easter and Magic Millions Gold Coast.
“It makes sense to breed them to stallions that we believe are going to make an impact in
Australia,” Ferguson said.
“I tell you exactly where the logic is there [breeding to Gun Runner]. Gun Runner has been an
extraordinary success in the United States. As a type, he is the most beautiful animal and would
look as much like a turf horse as a dirt horse.
“He's by Candy Ride, who has produced so many good turf horses. So I firmly believe Gun Runner is a
stallion who can do really well. And on top of that, from his first five crops at stud, he's
produced 12 Grade 1 winners, which is more than any stallion has ever done in the history of
American racing. That, to me, is an incredible stat when you go back through to Bold Ruler, who had
11, and Northern Dancer, who had seven.”
Ferguson was effusive in his praise for Gun Runner and said the opportunity to buy a colt by the
11-time Grade 1 winner in Australia is one not to be understated.
“We all dream, but if you had a Gun Runner colt who ended up being top class in Australia, his value
as a stallion prospect would be off the charts,” he said. “It’s an opportunity to have a colt that
could just be a game changer for the Australian bloodstock industry.
“I think it's so important that the best and the greatest sire lines from around the world are
exposed to the Australian market and Australian racing conditions in order that they can prove
themselves, as so many good mares have done in the past.”
Also on offer is a Kingman (Invincible Spirit) colt out of winning More Than Ready (Southern Halo)
mare Dubai Blue, who is catalogued as Lot 274. Ferguson highlighted the success the leading European
stallion has had in Australia from limited representation and anticipates bigger things to
come.
“He's had two Group 1 winners from 23 runners in Australia,” Ferguson said. “King Colorado was a JJ
Atkins winner and Zardozi was more typical of a Kingman in the sense that she was winning over
further distance and over more time. So I think the sire is a really, really exciting horse for
Australia.
“He's a fast stallion and she’s a really attractive American mare from a good family. It's just
basically quality and quality should work everywhere.
“It made sense at the time to breed them after [King Colorado took out the JJ Atkins in 2023] and
we've been so lucky in that we've been given a beautiful colt. So, fingers crossed, he will turn out
to be a top-class race horse. We've got these in Australia now and we want to see them go on and
produce great results on the race course, because that's what this whole thing is all about.”
Other colts set to sell in the draft are Lots 139, a son of Maurice (Screen Hero) out of an unraced
American Pharoah (Pioneerof The Nile) half-sister to Thousand Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) heroine Irish
Lights (Fastnet Rock), and Lot 186 – a son of Dundeel (High Chaparral) out of Winter Freeze, a
Snitzel (Redoute’s Choice) sister to Group 2-winning filly Zloties.
Also a half-sister to fellow Group 2 scorers and Sebring (More Than Ready) pair Catch A Fire and
Seaburge, Winter Freeze is a granddaughter of Australasian Oaks (Gr 1, 2000m) winner La Volta
(Laranto).
Lot 278 is the sole filly of the draft by the mighty Frankel (Galileo) and out of Easy Silence, a
stakes-placed daughter of leading American sire Constitution (Tapit) from the family of Travers
Stakes (Gr 1, 10f) winner Alpha (Benardini).
Ferguson said his draft reflects the nation’s internationalised bloodstock scene and hailed the
quality of the stock on the ground at Riverside.
“I think I would say that the Australian bloodstock market has developed unquestionably over the
last 25-30 years,” he said. “And the more it is internationalized, the more successful it's
becoming.
“I think Easter is a world-class sale and there are some world-class pedigrees and individuals.
They've done a great job of getting some beautiful yearlings to the sales. It's not too big, so it's
manageable and I've been really impressed by the horses that I've seen overall at the sale.”
One could hardly be in Sydney and not head to Rosehill to watch the brilliant Autumn Glow and having
done so last Saturday, Ferguson named the mare by Arrowfield’s The Autumn Sun (Redoute’s Choice) as
one of the best in the world.
“I couldn't put my finger on a better filly or mare racing anywhere in the world right now,” he
said.
“And it's not so much the fact that she's won 11, it's the way in which she does it, and it was no
more impressive than last Saturday and I was so glad to be there.
“What is so interesting about The Autumn Sun is, obviously he stands at Arrowfield with John
Messara. John does an amazing job of getting the best mares and he supports them with his own mares.
He does an amazing job, but it's been a wonderful journey, and I'm so thrilled that somebody like
John owns that filly because he appreciates how hard it is to have one like that. She's been
amazing.”
“The thing about John Messara and the Messara family is that first and foremost, they're breeders
and secondly, they're traders. What that means is when they get a stallion, they get behind him –
not only by buying yearlings, but also by consistently supporting those horses in years two, three,
and four.
“So, you know if you go to that stallion in year four, you've got so many good mares in front of
you, so many well-bred foals, so many well-bred yearlings, which are going to hit the track, which
give you such a great chance of success.
“So basically, it's an all-round package, whether it be finding the right stallion to stand, and he
obviously has to really believe in that stallion, then having the mares to support that stallion,
and then buy the best ones as yearlings subsequently. It's a world-class operation and I have
nothing but admiration for them.”

Father-and-son quinella Sires’ Produce Stakes
NZ Racing Desk
Seize The Day (Credit: Race Images)
Te Akau Racing continued their domination of New Zealand’s juvenile ranks when Seize The Day (I Am
Invincible) comfortably took out the Manawatu Sires’ Produce Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) at Trentham on
Saturday, with the added bonus for co-trainer Sam Bergerson of having his father, Roydon Bergerson,
quinella the race with Sweetest Thing (Hello Youmzain).
Seize The Day was backed into a $2.80 favourite for the two-year-old feature, but he had punters
anxious when he dislodged jockey Opie Bosson just before heading to the start, but the veteran
jockey was able to calm his charge and got around to the starting gates in one piece.
After jumping from his wide alley, Bosson took in the early state of play of the race and elected to
press forward, eventually finding the parked position outside pacemaker Summer Schemer (Dirty Work).
Seize The Day loomed ominously at the turn and quickly hit the lead, and made light work of his
opposition, running out to a 4.5 lengths victory over Sweetest Thing, with outsider Speed Demon (Yes
Yes Yes) a further 0.6 lengths back in third.
“I took my time a little bit [at the start of the race] to see what was going to happen and I
thought ‘I better get moving here, I am going to be caught three deep’, so I elected to slide
forward,” Bosson said.
“It took a couple of strides for him to come back to me but once he did, he relaxed beautifully and
I think it was the right idea to take the blinkers off.
“I wasn’t happy with his manners going to the start, but in the race they were perfect. He is a
lovely big colt, has a massive stride on him and he is just so smooth underneath you. It makes my
job easy.”
It was Te Akau Racing’s eighth win in the race in the last nine years and Sam Bergerson, who trains
in partnership with Mark Walker, was pleased his stable was able to clean sweep the juvenile Group 1
races in New Zealand this year, with stablemate Lara Antipova (Russian Revolution) having won the
Sistema Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) at Ellerslie earlier this month.
“He is just an outstanding colt and we have liked him from day one,” Bergerson said. “We thought he
would have been racing a bit earlier than he was, it just took a while for the penny to drop.
“He is just going from strength to strength and it is so exciting to see him put in a performance
like that. Opie summed it up well, he was in two minds at the start and he made the right choice.
“The way he quickened was really exciting. I thought he was travelling really nicely at the top of
the straight and I thought ‘gee, I would love to stick the blinkers on him now’. Thankfully he just
switched on and he has gone to another level since Matamata.”
Bergerson’s father Roydon was one of the first to congratulate him after the win and Sam Bergerson
said getting the quinella with his father was special.
“It is really cool to quinella it with Dad, it is pretty special,” he said. “He is almost as excited
as me and he has run second.”
Roydon Bergerson was rapt for his son and said his filly will now head for a spell.
“He [Sam] has done a great job for Te Akau and it’s an honour to work there. I don’t mind getting
beaten by him,” Roydon Bergerson said.
“I think she [Sweetest Thing] will be an outstanding three-year-old filly. She has always looked
like she is going to be a three-year-old. She has just had so much ability the whole way through and
we targeted this race. We had a few hiccups going into it, but we are proud of her and she will come
back a nice filly. She is going out for a three-month spell today.”
Seize The Day was purchased by Te Akau Racing principal David Ellis, in partnership with Kia Ora
Stud, out of Yarraman Park Stud’s 2025 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale draft for AU$600,000.
He has now won two of his three starts to date and has earned more than $334,000 in prize-money.
Like mother like daughter in New Zealand Thoroughbred Breeders’ Stakes
She’s A Dealer (Credit: Race Images)
Progressive mare She’s A Dealer (Ace High) followed in the footsteps of her mum Say No More
(Pentire) as she captured the New Zealand Thoroughbred Breeders’ Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) 14 years after
her dam achieved the feat.
The Roger James and Robert Wellwood-trained four-year-old benefitted from a change of tactics after
earlier races on the day had fallen in favour of horses who were in or near the lead and stuck to an
inside course in the home straight.
Wellwood didn’t mince words when describing those tactics after the victory.
“She is a fit and tough mare and was probably ready to go 2000 metres,” Wellwood said.
“We had a big chat with Roger [James] and George [Rooke, jockey] and we thought if we didn’t go
forward and put her in the race we might as well put her on the truck back home.
“We put her in the race and it paid off so it was wonderful to get the result.”
Rooke followed the instructions to the letter as he had the daughter of Ace High (High Chaparral)
placed one out and one back behind Afternoon Siesta (Shamus Award) as she and Special Sakura
(Staphanos) set up a steady speed in front.
Rooke made his bid on the mare rounding the home bend as she joined the first two before the trio
set down to fight out the finish.
She’s A Dealer showed plenty of heart as she hit the front and held out Special Sakura, who fought
back bravely, by 0.7 lengths with Afternoon Siesta holding out the flashing late run of Khanshe
(Mongolian Khan) to claim third, beaten 1.4 lengths.
“She hasn’t had a lot of luck in this prep as she has been running very good races without the
luck,” Wellwood said.
“She deserved that and Mum would be very proud as she won it a few years back.
“It’s a massive thrill for the team who work so hard and it is these sort of results that get
everyone out of bed in the morning.
“She is a brave mare, a good mare and it is harder when they are only four as it is their first year
against the older horses.
“That is not the last win you will see from her.”
Rooke was thrilled to get the victory after the plan that had been employed paid off.
“She’s been a very unlucky mare and we had no luck last time where she pulled a shoe coming out of
the gates,” he said.
“We had no luck coming wide earlier in the day, so we thought we would take that out of the equation
and sit wide as she is crying out for 2000 metres.
“I was very happy the way she was travelling and she is tough and loves running.”
Out of the two-time Group 1-winning Pentire (Be My Guest) mare Say No More, She’s A Dealer was bred
by John and Colleen Thompson under their Rich Hill Thoroughbreds banner. They race the mare with
Mark Neill, Richard Kidd, Ian Hart and Peter Merton.
She has now won five of her 11 starts and over $602,000 in prize-money.
