Extreme Choice colt plays $3 million starring role at the Inglis Easter sale

The thrilling appeal of Extreme Choice (Not A Single Doubt) and the resilience of the Inglis Easter yearling market were on show on opening day at Riverside, with Newgate Stud’s star stallion holding the top and equal-second lots spearheaded by a $3 million colt.

Before the sale, Inglis officials restrained their predictions due to uncertainty stemming from the ongoing war in Iran and its economic impacts, such as downward pressure on global stock markets and the opposite on fuel prices.

And while many rated the catalogue as the finest they had seen at Easter, an even and deep spread of quality - combined with events in the Middle East - led to doubts last year’s top price of $3 million could be matched.

What's On

Within less than an hour those doubts were erased when Coolmore’s Tom Magnier out-duelled Yulong in a tense bidding war to emerge with Lot 26, Lime Country Thoroughbreds’ powerful bay colt by Extreme Choice out of dual Group winner Pretty Brazen (Brazen Beau).

Later, trainer Clinton McDonald and Shane McGrath Bloodstock paid $1.8m for Lot 117, Newgate’s filly by the same sire out of Group 1 winner Speak Fondly (Northern Meteor).

That ranked equal second on the day alongside Lot 126, Widden Stud’s Zoustar (Northern Meteor) filly out of Group 2 winner Summer Sham (Not A Single Doubt) who’s a sister to elite-winning sprinter and now Rosemont Stud-based sire Schwarz. She was bought by Dean Hawthorne Bloodstock, on behalf of Jonathan Munz’s GSA Bloodstock.

It came in an opening session which, although several markers were down on last year, left Inglis Bloodstock CEO Sebastian Hutch “delighted”, given his pre-sale jitters due to events in the Middle East.

Soon after the close of business, the average was $452,603, down 7.4 per cent at the same stage last year, albeit with 17 more lots sold (146). The gross stood at $66,080,000, up 4.5 per cent, while the median dropped 6.6 per cent to $350,000. The clearance rate was down three points at 76 per cent.

In a sign of the spread of quality, the day’s eight seven figure lots came from six different vendors.

And in a hint of the strength and breadth of the buying bench, they involved seven different purchasers.

“It’s hard not to be buoyed by the outcome of today,” Hutch told reporters. “It’s a promising start to the sale.

“I was apprehensive ahead of the sale. But ultimately it’s played out that people wanted to buy nice horses and pursue them with real vigour. We get to the end of the day with a set of figures which, if you’d offered them to me at the start, I’d have bitten your hand off for.

“The gross is up, the clearance is … fractionally behind last year. We offered more horses so I think we were prepared for that.

By a fluke of the catalogue, Hutch believes bigger and better should be expected on Monday. That was hinted at by the fact the $3m colt was the usually big-spending Magnier’s only purchase of the day.

“I would expect people to have a longer list for tomorrow than they would have had for today. There’s plenty of nice horses tomorrow,” said Hutch, while reminding buyers there were still lower budget buys to be had.

“There’ll be lots of people shopping in that zero to $300,000 bracket.

“There are plenty of horses falling into that part of the market. It’s not as if it’s impossible to buy a horse.”

Expectations were high for Extreme Choice at this sale, with his ten lots hatched from his first season after entering the service fee stratosphere, at $275,000 (inc GST). Only three of his offerings were on sale on Sunday, but his two seven-figure lots helped him top the averages among sires, with three or more lots sold, at $1.9m.

Extreme Choice’s one lot that didn’t make seven figures made $900,000 in Lot 71, a Newgate colt from New Zealand Listed winner Second Time Lucky (Any Suggestion), bought by the Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott and Kestrel Thoroughbreds axis.

The Extreme Choice effect was well portrayed in Magnier’s $3m purchase, bred by Peachester Lodge’s Graham and Linda Huddy, and a new personal best price for Greg and Jo Griffin’s Lime Country Thoroughbreds.

Dam Pretty Brazen has had three yearlings sold. First foal Top Maestro (Capitalist) fetched $220,000 (and has had two unplaced runs in Hong Kong as Top Maestro). Her second foal, a filly by Farnan (Not A Single Doubt), made $40,000 as a yearling. And now her third one, by Extreme Choice, has made $3m.

“Obviously, Extreme Choice is doing very well, but the long and short of it is the colt was a standout all week,” said Magnier, who’ll send the session-topper to Chris Waller.

“He’s a very good mover, loads of quality, very good looking, a lovely light stepper. It wasn’t an Einstein job. We’re delighted to get him and we’ll need a bit of luck.”

The result left Lime Country’s Jo Griffin with tears of joy. In the ten years since she and husband Greg crossed the Tasman, their previous best sale was their $1.6m son of Snitzel (Redoute’s Choice) who was the top colt at Easter 2023. He’s now known as Imperial Force and is stakes-placed for Bjorn Baker.

“Greg and I looked at each other last night and I said, ‘I think it’s got a two in front of it’. And he said, ‘So do I’,” said Griffin, who was then “blown away” to see the ultimate price start with a three.

“Very rarely do I get emotional about it, but I guess when does that ever happen?

“We sold the highest priced colt two years ago and that was an amazing thing for us at the time. To sell a horse at this price - any time you sell a million dollar horse is special, but gee.”

With a fitting piece of symmetry to the sale in that Pretty Brazen was born at Coolmore, and his breeder Linda Huddy was also pleasantly stunned.

“I can’t hardly believe it, it will sink in eventually I guess but this is way beyond our wildest dreams,’’ she said. “I thought at $1.5 million we would have been happy but $3 million - it’s unbelievable.’’

Later on in the afternoon, McGrath and McDonald were ecstatic to secure a $1.8m Extreme Choice filly, the seventh foal of ATC Flight Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) winner Speak Fondly, who’s already produced a stakes winner in Compelling Truth (I Am Invincible).

“Like everybody else here, we’ve done our due diligence. We’ve gone around and looked at all the fillies and she was our pick of the sale. She’s sold accordingly,” said McGrath. “It’s a lot of money, but Extreme Choice is obviously a freak statistically.”

McGrath had tried to find “a common denominator” in sub-fertile Extreme Choice’s stakes winners - who currently number 18 from 144 starters at 12.5 per cent, and include six elite victors. He said Newgate’s Jim Carey had told him “all the real good Extreme Choices have all got a beautiful action”.

“And that’s what she had,” he said. “She’s an October foal, so I think there’s plenty of growth and maturity and, you know, an Extreme Choice - who knows what you have, but it’s a ticket in the lottery.

“We’ve got a really good bunch of owners … and fortunately they’re happy to back us and I hope this filly rewards us in spades.”

While $1.8m represents a sizeable outlay for McGrath and McDonald, the former had a cheeky message for Newgate’s managing director Henry Field.

“You can tell Henry we had a little bit more,” he smiled.

While Extreme Choice was the talk of the day, reigning champion sire Zoustar had more seven figure lots than any sire, with three of the eight, who were evenly split with four colts and four fillies.

Zoustar’s headliners were headed by the sister to Rosemont Stud sire Schwarz, bought by Hawthorne for Munz.

“She was our number one Zoustar and probably our number one filly at the sale. We’ve bought Zoustars here before who have been performing well for us and she was right up there,” said Hawthorne, an avowed fan of Zoustar’s home stud.

“Two years ago I bought four off Widden: Napoleonic, Beskar, and Price Tag are all stakes performers, and we’ve got another filly by Zoustar coming through who looks stakes class.

“We have a lot of luck shopping there, we like buying the breed, we keep going back to the well.”

Hawthorne, the day’s leading buyer with 11 lots for an outlay of $5.25m, admitted he was surprised “we’d have to go that high” for the Zoustar filly.

“My knees were knocking when we got up there, but full credit to the boss [Munz]. He kept going and we got her. I’m rapt,” he said.

Zoustar also had the day’s equal fifth top yearling in Lot 135, a colt out of dual Group winner Sword Of Light (New Approach) - the dam of the Listed-winning Beskar (Snitzel) - who was sold by Widden to Yulong and Waterhouse and Bott for $1.35m.

And Zoustar rounded out the seven figure yearlings with Lot 9, a half sister to highly-rated two-year-old Group 2 winner Paradoxium (Extreme Choice), who was offered by Steve Grant’s Silverdale Farm and bought by Yulong for $1.1m.

I Am Invincible (Invincible Spirit) also featured, with two lots among the top six. They helped Yarraman Park’s triple champion sire end the day as leading stallion by aggregate, with 16 lots fetching $11,230,000 and ranked second by averages ($702,000).

Lot 133 was his filly out of triple stakes winner Sweet Sherry (Bel Esprit), dam of another triple stakes victor in Eneeza (Exceed And Excel), who was sold by Silverdale to Sir Owen Glenn’s Go Bloodstock, trainer Michael Freedman and Andy Williams Bloodstock, for $1.7m.

“Sir Owen was keen to try to get some early types out of this sale, and she was certainly one of the ones we identified who fit that bill,” Freedman said.

“She just had a lot of physical presence about her, stood over a lot of ground, with a beautiful action, and she’s sensible.

“I do love Bel Esprit mares as well, and she’s had a good start, with a stakes winner as a first foal.”

I Am Invincible’s Lot 20 fetched $1.35m - a colt out of dual Group 1 winner Pippie (Written Tycoon), sold from Cressfield’s draft to the China Horse Club and Newgate.

“We loved him,” said Newgate’s Field. “He was nearly our favourite colt on the ground, certainly one of our top five. He’s a masculine, powerful colt out of a very fast mare, bred on a terrific farm.”

Rounding out the list of seven-figure yearlings was Milburn Creek’s Lot 171, a son of Home Affairs (I Am Invincible) and the second foal from Group 2 winner Victoria Quay (Dundeel), who sold to Ted Huglin and Clarke Bloodstock for $1.3m.

Young American Boersma makes a splash at Easter as he teams up with Arrowfield

ANZ News

Payton Boersma pictured with his I Am Invincible filly (Credit: Justin Darcy)

“Precocious” is a word heard extremely often at yearling sales. You just don’t often hear it about buyers.

But it applies perfectly to Payton Boersma, who made a splash at Inglis Easter on Sunday.

He’s originally from the west coast of America, he loves the beach and you could easily imagine him describing Sydney’s surf as “gnarly”.

He fronts a young but expanding thoroughbred buying team called The Flying Dutchmen, and on Sunday he made his first overseas purchase in buying a filly for $750,000.

And he’s all of 23 years old.

These American Dutchmen bought Lot 89, a daughter of I Am Invincible (Invincible Spirit) out of three-time Group 1 winner Shoals (Fastnet Rock). They’ll race her in Australia along with Arrowfield Stud, the vendor who stayed in for a leg, and who’ve been helping Boersma’s team in their first foray outside the US.

It’s an intriguing picture, putting Arrowfield’s John Messara, the septuagenarian senior statesman of Australian breeding, in cahoots with Boersma, who looked the picture of surfie cool in his shorts and thongs at Riverside, and is just the odd half century Messara’s junior.

But the respect runs both ways, with Messara labelling his new associate - who’s younger than Written Tycoon - as “one smart cookie”.

Boersma’s story, one of those classic American success ones, starts with a great grandfather who emigrated from the Netherlands, and continues to a father and uncle who, in just as classic Dutch fashion, had a dairy farm in Oregon. When that business got tough, they bought an espresso machine, and now Dutch Bros Coffee is a major drive-through chain with more than 1,000 outlets across the country. It’s also helped Gen Z’s Payton launch into thoroughbreds.

we decided to buy our first claiming horse for 2,500 bucks. That was in 2012, and it just kinda snowballed from there

Payton Boersma

“My dad loves racing, my four brothers and my mom love it. It’s awesome,” Boersma enthused, for he knows no other way.

“It really just started with going to the race in our hometown, Grants Pass, Oregon - just a local track with cheap claiming racing. Then we decided to buy our first claiming horse for 2,500 bucks. That was in 2012, and it just kinda snowballed from there. That was when I first started studying pedigrees.”

When some quick maths deduced Boersma was ten, he replied, “Yep!”

“Then about four years ago, a group of us got a bit more seriously into it, initially as a small operation on the west coast with a bunch of claiming horses,” Boersma told ANZ News.

“At first we were called Boardshorts Stables - ‘cause we just had a really great time, loved the beach and showed up to the races in boardshorts and flip flops. But then the branding was becoming more difficult, and we were getting a bit more professional, just slightly, so we came up with The Flying Dutchmen.

“We also decided to professionalise the operation and we moved to Kentucky. We then bought a few stallion shares, some yearlings, and we’ve been breeding to race and it’s been spectacular.”

Their first lot of yearling buys, in 2023, produced Owen Almighty (Speightstown), who took the upstart operation straight to the top.

“He ran in the Kentucky Derby,” he said. “He was a longshot, but he took the lead going into the final stretch. For about two seconds the whole world thought we had a chance to win the Kentucky Derby - the longest two seconds I’ve ever had. In the end he came fifth, but just to be in the race was a really special thing.”

So what prompted this first buying mission outside of the US?

“I started to study the bloodlines a good bit about a year ago to get a deeper understanding of the international bloodlines, and have a good understanding of what it looks like on a worldwide scale,” said Boersma, for whom a year must be a far longer time than for some of us.

“And we found that Easter is the best sale to come to. It’s very similar to the Saratoga sale in America, where it’s the top quality and the top bloodlines, and we just said - ‘You know what? we want to make our stamp in Australia’.”

The first mark has been made through Sunday’s Lot 89, whose dam Shoals was Australia’s Champion 3YO Filly in 2017-18 and the equal leading older female on the 2018 WTR sprint rankings, and has thrown a Group 3 winner in this filly’s sister Isthmus.

Boersma, who runs The Flying Dutchmen with partner Hunter Rankin, noted the filly’s third dam was the great blue hen Shantha’s Choice (Canny Lad), dam of five stakes winners including three at the top level headed by Arrowfield legend Redoute’s Choice (Danehill).

“The filly is spectacular,” Boersma beamed. “Physically, she’s just so powerful. She’s a really nice mover and she’s got one of the best pedigrees in the entire country. It shows on the page. It’s incredible.”

Boersma said he was “loving” his first trip to Australia, which of course included trips to the beach and the races.

“I went to Golden Slipper day and gosh that was spectacular,” he said, before a wrap for Messara’s finest. “And that Autumn Glow - she is truly incredible. I hope she gets the chance to put herself in that Winx conversation.”

Reminded that Autumn Glow had “unbeaten” over Winx at this stage, he shot back, “Yeah, but she did win 33 in a row.”

Boersma said The Flying Dutchmen, who now have around 70 racehorses, 30 breeding stock, their own stud farm and 12 staff, would likely return to Easter, while building their association with Arrowfield.

“John Messara is a really good guy who runs, honestly, the best operation I’ve ever seen. I’ve been truly impressed,” he said.

“We’re partnering with Arrowfield on this filly. It’s the first partnership we’ve ever done in fact. I’m very lucky to have met John and his team, and we can’t wait to get to know them better.”

Morning Briefing

Blinkers on Autumn Boy

Autumn Boy (Credit: Racing Photos)

Blinkers will be reapplied to Autumn Boy (The Autumn Sun) for his Doncaster Mile (Gr 1, 1600m) rematch with Randwick Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) winner Sheza Alibi (Saxon Warrior) at Randwick on Saturday as Chris Waller looks to sharpen the colt for the drop back in distance. Autumn Boy wore blinkers when winning the Caulfield Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) in the spring but has raced without them in three runs this campaign. Waller said the gear change was designed to help the three-year-old settle and quicken over the mile after last start’s Rosehill Guineas (Gr 1, 2000m) win. “Coming back to a mile isn’t easy,” the trainer said. “I don’t think he needs the blinkers as a racehorse, but I want him right in Kerrin’s [McEvoy] hands when he asks him to quicken.” Autumn Boy has progressed with each run this preparation, finishing third on his reappearance in last month’s Hobartville Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m), second to Sheza Alibi in the Randwick Guineas, and then winning the Rosehill Guineas. Sheza Alibi will meet Autumn Boy one kilogram better in the Doncaster and the filly is a $2 early favourite, with Autumn Boy at $5. Waller will also saddle Sixties (Flying Artie) and Militarize (Dundeel) in the Group 1.

TJ Smith start up in the air for Jimmysstar

Ciaron Maher is yet to give Jimmysstar (Per Incanto) the all-clear to run in Saturday’s TJ Smith Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) on the opening day of The Championships at Randwick after the sprinter suffered two black eyes in his first-up run at Caulfield. Jimmysstar finished seventh as a short-priced favourite in the William Reid Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) on March 21, beaten 2.3 lengths. As well the the two black eyes, the gelding also had some of the Caulfield turf down his throat following the run. Maher said he wants to see Jimmysstar work again before deciding whether to proceed to Saturday’s Group 1 sprint. The six-year-old recovered from the black eyes within 48 hours and travelled to Sydney last week, where he completed a canter on Saturday morning. “We'll see how he works,” Maher said. “I don't really like making excuses, but Mark [Zahra] said he got sort of terrorised. He is a horse that does his own thing a bit, bridles up. I didn't mind him being on the inside, but he jumped, got hit straight out of the barrier. He was wanting to get out, but he got pushed back in and then at the furlong got a decent bump as well. I was very happy going in, but I'm a little bit on the fence [afterwards].” Regular rider Ethan Brown will be back on board if the gelding takes his chance on the weekend, after Mark Zahra partnered him at Caulfield. Zahra will ride the Anthony and Sam Freedman-trained Tentyris (Street Boss) in the TJ Smith. Meanwhile, Jimmysstar’s stablemate Tempted (Street Boss) will head to the Arrowfield Sprint (Gr 2, 1200m) at Randwick on April 11.

Group 1 plans for Wolf Gap

It has been a landmark week for syndicators Roll The Dice Racing, highlighted by a Group 1 victory and a major commercial deal. Last Saturday at Rosehill, their top colt Guest House (Home Affairs) claimed the Golden Slipper (Gr 1, 1200m). Days later, Roll The Dice Racing finalised a multi-million-dollar agreement with Coolmore, who will stand the son of Home Affairs (I Am Invincible) once his racing career concludes. “It’s an exciting time for the business,” Roll The Dice Racing director Steve Travaglia told Racing.com. “They don’t come around very often, but you need these things just to underline what you’re doing and knowing that you’re going to the sales and you’re buying the right horses. It doesn’t always work out, for one reason or another, and you need a lot of luck. It does give us the confidence to know that we’re doing the right thing.” Roll The Dice Racing will look to add another elite success when promising two-year-old Wolf Gap (Palace Pier) contests Saturday’s Sires’ Produce Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) at Randwick. “Two Group 1s in a fortnight would be something else, it would be awesome,” Travaglia said. “He’s going really well. It’s nice to have two horses that people are talking about.” Trained by Anthony and Sam Freedman, Wolf Gap was trialled at Randwick on Friday under Mark Zahra who will replace Nash Rawiller on the Todman Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) third.

Easter Handicap on the table for Lupo Solitario

Lupo Solitario (Credit: Race Images)

Danica Guy is targeting a return to stakes company in next month’s Easter Handicap (Gr 3, 1600m) at Ellerslie for Lupo Solitario (Satono Aladdin) following the gelding’s successful comeback win. The five-year-old showed promise as a three-year-old, winning three races including the Bonecrusher Stakes (Gr 3, 1400m), before being sold to Hong Kong interests. However, the son of Satono Aladdin (Deep Impact) failed to find form in seven starts for Frankie Lor, with a race fall at Sha Tin also denting his confidence. After three further unplaced runs, Lupo Solitario was sent back to New Zealand and returned to Guy, who assumed ownership and adopted a patient approach. That strategy paid dividends earlier this month when the gelding scored over a mile at Pukekohe. “He has pulled up super [from his win], I am rapt with him,” the trainer said. “I am so thrilled to get him back and get a win like that. It’s a good kick-off for him and hopefully we can get him into the Easter Handicap at a low weight… I think that will be a nice next target for him.”

JPN: Second Grade 1 score for Satono Reve

The Noriyuki Hori-trained Satono Reve (7 h Lord Kanaloa - Ciliege by Sakura Bakushin O) landed back-to-back renewals of the Takamatsunomiya Kinen (Gr 1, 1200m) at Chukyo on Sunday. The seven-year-old defeated Red Mon Reve (Lord Kanaloa) by two lengths with a further neck back to Win Carnelian (Screen Hero) in third. Winning rider Christophe Lemaire said: “I’m glad Satono Reve was able to win the race for two consecutive years. He’s a very strong horse. The pace was fast from the start, but he knows what he’s supposed to do, so I just let him run in his own rhythm. Once we entered the stretch, he really accelerated—it felt great. It was my first time riding him, but having raced alongside him many times, I knew him well. He’s an easy horse to ride, so it wasn’t difficult at all.”

JPN: Sunday Funday takes March Stakes

Sunday Funday (6 h Suzuka Causeway - First Lady by Smart Boy) added a second Graded win to his record when he took out Sunday’s March Stakes (Gr 3, 1800m) at Nakayama. Trained by Akishi Higashida and ridden by Yamato Tsunoda, the six-year-old entire finished strongly to beat Action Plan (Leontes) by two and a half lengths. Break Forth (Asia Express) came home a further length and a quarter away in third. Sunday Funday’s first Graded win came in last year’s Procyon Stakes (Gr 2, 1800m), while his other stakes win came in the Betelgeuse Stakes (Listed, 1800m) back in December 2024.

Grade 1 double for Into Mischief

Spendthrift Farm resident Into Mischief (Harlan’s Holiday) registered a Derby double on Saturday when his sons Commandment (3 c ex Sippican Harbor by Orb) and Renegade (3 c Spice Is Nice by Curlin) took out the Florida Derby (Gr 1, 9f) and Arkansas Derby (Gr 1, 9f) respectively to take the stallions tally on individual elite-level winners to 29. The Brad Cox-trained Commandment got the ball rolling when he scored at Gulfstream, edging out The Puma (Essential Quality) by a nose with Chief Wallabee (Constitution) a half-length behind in third. Bred in Kentucky by Lee Pokoik, Commandment was a $500,000 buy for Case Clay Thoroughbred Management on behalf of Wathnan Racing from the Taylor Made consignment at Fasig Tipton’s Saratoga Sale in 2024. He is out of the Grade 1-winning Orb (Malibu Moon) mare Sippican Harbor. Over at Oaklawn, the Todd Pletcher-trained Renegade proved too smart for his seven rivals, coming home four lengths clear of Silent Tactic (Tacitus) who in turn finished two lengths in front of Taptastic (Tapit). A son of the Grade 3-winning Curlin (Smart Strike) mare Spice Is Nice, Renegade was bought for $975,000 from the Taylor Made consignment at the 2024 Keeneland September Yearling Sale. Into Mischief stands for a fee of US$250,000 (approx. AU$363,160).

98 for Quality Road

Prom Queen (3 f ex Miss Bling Bling by Tapit) provided Quality Road (Elusive Quality) with his 98th individual stakes winner when she took out Saturday’s Gulfstream Oaks (Gr 2, 8.5f). Trained by Brad Cox, the filly was winning for the second time in three starts as she beat My Miss Mo (Uncle Mo) by two and three-quarter lengths with favourite She Be Smooth (Lexitonian) another three and three-quarter lengths away in a well stretched out field. Raced by her breeders Gary and Mary West, Prom Queen is out of the once-raced Miss Bling Bling (Tapit), who herself is a daughter of the three times stakes winner Milwaukee Appeal (Milwaukee Brew). Quality Road is standing at Lane’s End Farm for a fee of US$100,000 (approx. AU$145,265).

68 for Curlin

Red-hot favourite Grande (4 c ex Journey Home by War Front) notched his fourth win in five starts when he landed Saturday’s Ghostzapper Stakes (Gr 3, 8.5f) at Gulfstream to become the 68th individual stakes winner for Hill 'N Dale's Curlin (Smart Strike). Trained by Todd Pletcher, the four-year-old beat Capital Idea (Classic Empire) by three-quarters of a length, the front two pulling almost eight lengths clear of the remainder who were led home by Racing Driver (Dialed In). Out of the dual stakes winner Journey Home (War Front),
West Bloodstock, agent for Repole Stable, bought Grande for $300,000 from the consignment of breeder KatieRich Farms at the 2023 Keeneland September Yearling Sale. Curlin is standing for a fee of US$225,000 (approx. AU$326,845).

32 for Munnings

Nu What's New (4 g ex Heavenly Scat by Scat Daddy) provided Munnings (Speightstown) with his 32nd individual stakes winner when he took out Saturday’s Oaklawn Mile Stakes (Gr 3, 8f). The James DiVito-trained gelding was winning for the third time in nine starts as he beat East Avenue (Medaglia D’Oro) and Neoequs (Neolithic) by three-quarters of a length and the same. A $300,000 buy for his trainer from the Ocala Spring Sale, Nu What's New is out of the once-raced Heavenly Scat (Scat Daddy). Munnings stands at Ashford Stud for a fee of US$45,000 (approx. AU$65,370).

US: Derby favourite Paladin suffers setback

Paladin (Gun Runner), the early favourite for the Kentucky Derby (Gr 1, 10f), will miss May’s race after connections discovered a fracture in the colt’s right front ankle following a workout on Saturday. Trained by Chad Brown, Paladin is undefeated in three faces, his most recent success coming in last month’s Risen Star Stakes (Gr 2, 9f) at Fair Grounds.

Sha Tin treble lifts Newnham back to the top in trainer battle

Mark Newnham’s marvellous March continued at Sha Tin on Sunday when the trainer snared a treble that saw him return to the top of the trainers’ championship.

The third-year trainer claimed his first Hong Kong Derby (Listed, 2000m) triumph earlier this month, comfortably the biggest win of his Hong Kong career. On March 18, he saddled the first five-timer of his career.

Sunday’s treble fired him back to the trainers’ standings summit on 45 wins, two clear of Caspar Fownes on 43. Danny Shum sits two wins back on 41.

Ace (Tivaci) launched Newnham’s super Sunday when he finally broke through in the Class 5 Chung Chi Alumni Handicap (1400m) for Jerry Chau, who collected another pair to take his tally to 33 for the season.

“I think he’s better than Class 5,” Newnham said. “He galloped very well during the week. He drew a good gate, Jerry gave him an excellent ride, and I think that'll help the horse’s confidence.

“He won with a bit of authority so I think there’s still improvement to come.”

Max Que (Akeed Mofeed) continued his remarkable season with his first victory in Class 2 company when he took out the Shaw Alumni Handicap (1600m) under Alexis Badel. The Newnham-trained five-year-old has now won four times and has finished in the frame in all nine races this season.

“The horse has been very consistent this season – he’s just a really solid horse,” the winning trainer said.

“Today, with a nice light weight, and a good stalking ride from Alexis, it was a really good run.

“At the start of the season, I probably didn't think it was going to be a Class 2 winner. So, I’m happy what he’s achieved so far. You can send him out there and know he’s going to do his best. If that’s good enough to keep winning, great, but he’s had a fantastic season.”

Newnham brought up his treble when Ever Luck (Capitalist) claimed the Class 4 Faculty Of Education Alumni Handicap (1000m). The three-year-old has now won two from five outings in his debut season, with James Orman in the saddle on both occasions.

“He’s always had natural speed, so with the blinkers back on and dropped to 1000 metres, we just decided to play to his asset,” Newnham said. “He’s struggled previously at 1200 metres carrying 135lb, but I thought today, with the blinkers on, he just had to use the outside fence as his guide and use that speed.

“As a three-year-old, I think the 1000-metre trip is as far as he wants to go. He won’t have too many more runs this season.”

Frankie Lor-trained Salon S (Zousain) maintained his exceptional record with his fourth win in as many career starts, and further boosted his 2026/27 Four-Year-Old Classic Series credentials.

Ridden by Matthew Poon, the three-year-old produced his usual front-running performance and found another gear in the home straight as the chasing pack began to close, saluting by a length to claim the Class 3 S.H. Ho Alumni Handicap (1400m).

“I was a little bit worried because this time he needed to carry 134lb in Class 3 and he’s only a three-year-old,” Lor said. “But he did a good job. I’ll talk to the owner to see whether we give him one more run. He’ll go up to Class 2 now.

“He’s still learning. The jockey said that if he can relax more, 1600 metres will be no problem.

“He’s quite exciting. You can see this sire has had some OK horses in Hong Kong, but this one is quite good. I hope he can keep going.”

Young Champion (Zoustar) dug deep under Andrea Atzeni to grab his first win of the season in a class record time of 1m 07.74s. The John Size-trained gelding may not have worked harder for a victory in his whole career after holding off a battling Patch Of Stars (All Too Hard) in the closing stages of the Class 2 CW Chu Alumni Handicap (1200m).

“He put himself straight there to win the race and he actually fought today too and showed a bit of character; he was there to get beat but didn’t, so I’m very pleased,” Size said.

Shotgun (Charm Spirit) was an impressive one-and-three-quarter-length winner of the Class 4 New Asia Alumni Handicap (1400m) and brought up the double for Atzeni. David Hall chalked up his 22nd win of a solid season and looks set to surpass last season’s mark of 26 wins.

David Eustace declared “the penny has finally dropped” after Charity Together (Mohaather) provided Chau with his second winner of the day and got off the mark in Hong Kong at the 11th time of asking in the Class 4 United Alumni Handicap (2000m). The four-year-old Irish-bred had been knocking at the door, having never finished outside the top five in five runs this term.

“He hasn’t had a huge amount of luck with his barriers,” Eustace said, “but he’s drawn well in his last two starts. He’s only a four-year-old, so I think there’s room for progression there.”

Francis Lui and Vincent Ho combined to grab the Class 4 The CUHK Alumni Cup Handicap (1400m) when King Dance (Nyquist) got up by a neck at 33-1, while Lor found his way back to the winner’s arch courtesy of Better And Better’s (Shamus Award) narrow victory in the Class 4 Graduate School Alumni Handicap (1200m). The win also provided Badel with his second success of the meeting.

Rising Force (Deep Field) showcased a stunning burst of speed in the last 200 metres to win the Class 3 Wu Yee Sun Alumni Handicap (1200m) under Richard Kingscote for Ricky Yiu, before the Francis Lui-trained The Golden Knight (Impending), ridden by Harry Bentley, prevailed in a blanket finish to the Class 3 Morningside and Lee Woo Sing Alumni Handicap (1600m) to close the meeting.
