Yarraman Park Stud has announced its service fees for 2026 and once again their multiple champion sire I Am Invincible (Invincible Spirit) takes pride of place on the roster alongside his emerging sire-son Hellbent and the exciting Japanese-bred Brave Smash (Tosen Phantom), standing at an unchanged fee of $220,000 (inc GST).

I Am Invincible is known throughout the industry as ‘Vinnie’ and the Yarraman trophy cabinet is fit to burst with his Australian premierships that started with first-season honours in 2013-14 and reached a crescendo with a hat-trick of general sires titles in the seasons ending 2022, 2023 and 2024.

What's On

His Group 1 winning roll-call reached 19 after Caballus stormed home in the Newmarket Handicap (1200m) and is set to target the $5 million The Quokka (1200m) in Perth. Across the Tasman, his exciting two-year-old colt Seize The Day overpowered the Group 1 Manawatu Sires’ Produce Stakes (1400m) field – winning by four lengths and change for Te Akau Racing.

David Ellis’ operation has had great success with Vinnie’s yearlings via ten-time Group 1 winner Imperatriz and Move To Strike who won the Manawatu Sires’ Produce Stakes and is now at stud.

Vinnie’s influence is showing no signs of slowing. “He continues to deliver on every front and he’s incredibly reliable,” Yarraman Park director Arthur Mitchell declared.

“He’s striking at 81 per cent winners to runners, 9.2 per cent stakes winners to runners and 5.5 per cent Group winners to runners.”

“What is prevalent is that Vinnie’s progeny are going on to produce so he’s a safe bet and a proven choice. If you get a colt or a filly, they could go on to produce the next Hong Kong Derby winner like Hellbent or the next Golden Slipper winner.

“Remarkably, all 12 of his sire-sons with runners have produced winners. We know how difficult it is to buy a stallion so Vinnie’s colts are a safe bet. His daughters have gone on to produce Group 1 winners in both hemispheres and we have no doubt he will be a very dominant broodmare sire.

“He’s done more than we ever dreamed. He’s continuing to give to everyone who uses him and I know we are in for another good season with him.”

I Am Invincible’s strength in the sales ring continued in 2026 as the highest-represented active sire with yearlings at Inglis Easter (41) and Magic Millions Gold Coast (40). He achieved a phenomenal average across the two sales of $622,787. And with mares such as Shillelagh (Savabeel), Shoals (Fastnet Rock), Zougotcha (Zoustar), Zou Dancer (Zoustar), Floozie (Zoustar), etc., expected to foal this season, Vinnie’s star looks set to rise higher.

Vinnie’s sire son Hellbent is developing into a genuine force in the Australasian stallion ranks. A potential champion in waiting, he sits comfortably in the Top 10 in the general sires’ list this season with $11.15 million in progeny earnings. He’s jumped from 14th last season to eighth currently, highlighting his upward trajectory.

Hellbent sired five Group 1 performers this season plus Invincible Ibis who dominated the Hong Kong Derby (Listed, 2000m). His progeny are showing their versatility across a range of distances along with their ability to win at two, like this season’s black-type horses Zip Lock (Group 3 B J McLachlan), Revengeance ($600,000 prizemoney), Cyclotron and Hawea.

They then train on, as highlighted by his six-year-old Group 1-winning daughter Magic Time who has earned $4.5 million and Benedetta who has banked $2.4 million.

Hellbent sired two Group 1 winners from his first crop and the sky’s the limit for this young stallion who has proved himself off lesser-quality mares. There have been 15 individual stakes performers this season alone. The aforementioned juveniles, plus his Group 1-placed three-year-old daughter Savvy Hallie as well as Magic Time, Vivy Air, Fully Lit and Benedetta.

Benedetta is set to be offered at the 2026 Inglis Chairman’s Sale and the signs are positive after the 2025 breeding stock sale when Hellbent’s race fillies were bought by two global powerhouse breeding operations: Katsumi Yoshida (Northern Farm) went to $900,000 for Group 2 winner Hell Hath No Fury and Newgate Bloodstock spent $640,000 for Gold Coast Gold Pearl (1100m) winner Miss Hellfire.

In the sales ring, his 2026 yearlings made up to $600,000 at Magic Millions, bought by Michael Freedman and Andrew Williams Bloodstock (FBAA), and he averaged $300,000 at Inglis Easter with a 100 per cent clearance rate.

In the paddock, Hellbent has all bases loaded with exciting weanlings or in-foal mares including Egyptian Symbol (Stratum), Hiccups (Fastnet Rock) (the dam of Sunrays) and Octavia (Holy Roman Emperor) (the dam of King Of Sparta). With this season’s results and what’s to come, the future belongs to Hellbent.

Hellbent will stand for an increased fee of $55,000 (inc GST).

Brave Smash (Credit: Yarraman Park)

Brave Smash enters his fourth season at Yarraman Park off a positive start at the 2026 Magic Millions and Inglis yearling sales.

Buyers showed strong support and confidence in Brave Smash throughout the majors, starting with a 100 per cent clearance rate in Book 1 at the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale. He also achieved his highest-priced yearling to date when a colt out of Tetsuko (I Am Invincible) sold to George Moore Bloodstock of Hong Kong for $380,000.

At the Inglis Classic, Grahame Begg and Rohan Hughes went to $300,000 for a colt out of The Natural (Fastnet Rock). Ciaron Maher, Gary Portelli, Moody Racing, Kurrinda Bloodstock and Ready-To-Run consignor Ohukia Lodge were all across his yearlings at the sales.

Others included Fred Noffke, who purchased the 2026 Group 1 Randwick Guineas (1600m) - Doncaster Mile (1600m) winner Sheza Alibi (Saxon Warrior) and Danny O’Brien who trains his Brisbane black-type winner Brave Design.

“Achieving a career-best price for a yearling this year just shows the quality of mare he’s receiving,” Yarraman’s Harry Mitchell said.

“He throws a good type, a type trainers like, and on the race track he’s going well from small numbers.

“He has seven stakes horses including a Group 1 winner from his first crop. They’re tough and enjoy their jobs just like Brave Smash and they suit our racing. We’re looking forward to seeing his two-year-olds step out and we will continue to support him along with our partners Emirates Park and others.”

When it comes to finding the right mare for Brave Smash, the appeal is straightforward. He is a stallion of consistency who leaves athletic, strong, clean-made stock with the powerful hindquarter of a natural sprinter.

Pedigree-wise, he is completely free of Danehill (Danzig) blood, carries a double cross of Northern Taste (Northern Dancer) and is the fastest son of the Sunday Silence (Halo) sireline to stand at stud in Australia. His in-foal book includes Noondie (Flying Spur), Tetsuko, Overstep (Exceed And Excel), Bonita Aurelia (Sweynesse) and Sognani (Magic Albert), the dam of Kristilli.

With four seasons of hard work by Yarraman and his shareholders completed, Brave Smash is building into one of the most exciting emerging sires in the country.

Brave Smash will stand for a slightly reduced fee of $22,000 (inc GST).

As the Yarraman roster continues to build momentum, the door remains open for breeders looking to be part of what comes next, with I Am Invincible, Hellbent and Brave Smash all poised to build on their growing influence in the seasons ahead.

Stablemates clash in Oaks bid for Sutton

After Summer (Credit: Racing Photos)

After Summer (The Autumn Sun) and Classic Gem (Maurice) will represent trainer Dom Sutton in Saturday’s Australian Oaks (Gr 1, 2400m) at Randwick. Sutton, in just his second full season training, said there was little between the pair as he chases a first Sydney winner at the elite level. “It’s a big achievement to have two runners in a race like this,” Sutton said. “They’re both going well and deserve their place.” After Summer comes off a narrow second in the Vinery Stud Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m) and is expected to relish the rise in distance. “She’s an out-and-out stayer and the 2400 metres will really suit,” Sutton said. Classic Gem backs up from a solid effort in the Adrian Knox Stakes (Gr 3, 2000m), where she covered ground before finishing off strongly. “She’s probably a bit underrated and her run last week had merit,” Sutton said. Billy Egan rides After Summer from barrier three, while Damian Lane partners Classic Gem from gate nine.

Treasurethe Moment set for Sydney return in Queen Of The Turf

Treasurethe Moment (Alabama Express) will look to maintain her unbeaten Sydney record when she lines up in Saturday’s Queen Of The Turf Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) at Randwick. Trainer Matt Laurie opted to bypass the Doncaster Mile (Gr 1, 1600m) in favour of the mares’ feature, a decision he said was influenced by the emergence of star filly Sheza Alibi (Saxon Warrior). “We felt this was the better race to target,” Laurie said. “She’s unbeaten in Sydney and we’re hoping that can continue.” A winner of 11 races, Treasurethe Moment enjoyed a standout spring, highlighted by victory in the Memsie Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m), and she arrives third-up after a win in the Sunline Stakes (Gr 2, 1600m). Laurie has kept her to a light campaign, with the mile seen as her ideal trip. “She’s in really good order and should be able to sustain a strong tempo,” he said. The mare is expected to benefit from a genuine pace, with Pride Of Jenni (Pride Of Dubai) likely to ensure a solidly run race. “She’s proven at longer trips, so that should suit her,” Laurie said. Treasurethe Moment has drawn barrier three.

Maher trio target Sydney Cup success

Mr Monaco (Territories) will headline Ciaron Maher’s three-pronged attack on Saturday’s Sydney Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) at Randwick. The progressive stayer has emerged as a leading contender this preparation, winning his past two starts including the N E Manion Cup (Gr 3, 2400m) despite covering ground throughout, and is expected to see out the two-mile trip strongly. “He’s a genuine stayer and that’s a big advantage in these races,” Maher’s Sydney foreman Johann Gerard-Dubord said. Stablemates Piggyback (Trapeze Artist) and Juja Kibo (Belarado) also bring solid credentials. Piggyback comes through a fifth placing in the Tancred Stakes (Gr 1, 2400m) and drops to a light weight, with connections confident she can run out the distance. “She’s very well placed and should get every chance,” Gerard-Dubord said. Juja Kibo backs up from the Chairman’s Handicap (Gr 2, 2600m), with the stable expecting improvement third-up. “He takes racing to get fit and he’s rock-hard now,” Gerard-Dubord said.

Reachin’ Out steps up to Group 2 company

Reachin’ Out (Stay Inside) will face her stiffest test to date when she lines up in Saturday’s Percy Sykes Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) at Randwick. Trained by Adrian Bott and Gai Waterhouse, the daughter of Stay Inside (Extreme Choice) created a strong impression with a dominant debut victory at Randwick-Kensington and has since continued to please at home. “That was a very good debut and she’s improved again since,” Bott said. “She looks a filly on the way up and the timing might be right for her to step up.” Stablemate Lumbini (Russian Revolution) will also contest the feature, coming off a runner-up finish in the Magic Night Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) after an earlier run in the Sweet Embrace Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m). “It was always the plan to target this race,” Bott said. “She’s in good order and the form around her is strong.”

Middle Earth resumes in Vase ahead of Cup campaign

Middle Earth (Roaring Lion) will begin his latest Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) preparation in Saturday’s Anniversary Vase (Listed, 1600m) at Caulfield. The Ciaron Maher-trained stayer, a placegetter in last year’s Melbourne Cup, is being set for another spring assault, with a Queensland campaign likely to follow his return. Assistant trainer Jack Turnbull said the gelding would head north via Sydney after Saturday, with races such as the Doomben Cup (Gr 1, 2000m) and Q22 (Gr 2, 2200m) under consideration. “He trialled on Monday and we’ve brought him back quickly to take the edge off him,” Turnbull said. “He’s a high-energy horse and we’re looking to get him settled into his preparation.” Middle Earth has been given two jump-outs ahead of his return and carries 61 kilograms, matching the weight carried by Pride Of Jenni to win the race last year. The former UK galloper made an early impression in Australia with victory in the Australian Cup Prelude (2000m) before progressing through to the JRA Cup (Gr 3, 2040m) ahead of his Melbourne Cup placing. Maher will also be represented by Land Legend (Galileo), who resumes after joining the stable, and Sayedaty Sadaty (Anodin), who returns following a last-start tenth in the Queen Elizabeth Stakes (Gr 3, 2600m) after winning the Bendigo Cup (Gr 3, 2400m).

Buggsy steps up to stakes company at Caulfield

Buggsy (Credit: Racing Photos)

Buggsy (Harry Angel) will take the next step in his development when he lines up in Saturday’s Redoute’s Choice Stakes (Listed, 1200m) at Caulfield. Trained by Mick Price and Michael Kent Jnr, the son of Harry Angel (Dark Angel) impressed on debut with a dominant win over 1000 metres at Sandown-Hillside and now rises in grade at just his second start. Kent Jnr said the colt had taken benefit from the experience, with the stable focusing on improving his tractability ahead of the step up in trip. “He’s a high-energy colt but he’s starting to understand what’s required,” Kent Jnr said. “We’ve worked on getting him to settle and find his rhythm.” Buggsy showed a strong finishing effort on debut after racing on speed and is expected to appreciate the rise to 1200 metres. “I think he’ll enjoy the tempo of 1200 metres and be able to travel more comfortably,” Kent Jnr said. Thomas Stockdale takes the ride, replacing Craig Williams.

Dirty Look chases rich payout in Caulfield final

Dirty Look (Super Seth) will chase a lucrative payday when she lines up in Saturday’s Up & Coming Stars Series Final (1200m) at Caulfield. Trained by Grahame Begg, the lightly raced filly has shown steady progression in her first preparation, breaking her maiden at Sandown-Hillside before finishing second at the Lakeside track at her latest start. Begg had initially planned to utilise an apprentice claim but was forced to change course after a suspension ruled out Logan Bates, with Harry Coffey securing the ride. “I thought I had been clever booking a claiming rider, but that didn’t work out,” Begg said. Dirty Look will be having just her fourth start and faces more seasoned opposition, but the trainer is pleased with her development. “She’s done everything we’ve asked and is learning her craft,” Begg said. “Her last run was very good in a race that didn’t suit. We’re looking forward to seeing how she measures up.” The filly is expected to head for a break following Saturday’s assignment.

Ribbon cut on $20m Scone upgrade

David Harris MP has officially opened the latest stage of redevelopment at Scone Race Club this week, marking the completion of key works as part of a $20 million upgrade to the Upper Hunter training hub. The minister joined Racing NSW chair, Dr Saranne Cook and club representatives on site this week to inspect the new facilities, including the recently completed Polytrack training surface and the first stage of a major stabling project. The synthetic track is designed to provide an all-weather training option, while the initial stable complex has already accommodated more than 100 horses, with further buildings to follow later this year. Once complete, the expanded stabling precinct is expected to house more than 500 horses, significantly increasing Scone’s capacity and strengthening its position as a leading regional training centre. The works form part of the NSW Government’s broader Racing for the Regions program, which continues to fund infrastructure upgrades across the state’s country racing network.

Kyneton meeting abandoned following track concerns

Racing Victoria (RV) stewards abandoned Wednesday’s meeting at Kyneton after jockeys raised concerns over the condition of the track. The surface was initially rated a Soft 5 following overnight rain before further showers saw it downgraded to a Soft 6, but riders reported inconsistencies across sections of the track, including issues with firmness and footing. A vote of jockeys on course resulted in a unanimous decision not to proceed (12 in favour, two abstentions), with stewards abandoning the meeting prior to the first race. Racing Victoria confirmed the track had been inspected in the lead-up, including a gallop on race morning, however conditions were ultimately deemed unsuitable following rider feedback. The RV Tracks and Facilities team will inspect the course ahead of its next scheduled meeting later this month. Affected trainers have been offered alternative entry options for upcoming meetings, while RV will review the race program to accommodate impacted runners. Jump-outs scheduled for Kyneton the following day were also cancelled, with alternative arrangements to be explored. Under RV’s abandoned meeting policy, connections of horses engaged in the eight-race program are eligible for compensation, while trainers will receive a $100 business support subsidy per runner and jockeys engaged at the meeting will receive a $50 subsidy.

Warstep target for Dux after Riccarton stakes task

Dux (Tivaci) will step out at Riccarton Park on Saturday as a lead-in to her main autumn target in the south. Trained by Bill Thurlow and Sam O’Malley, the daughter of Tivaci (High Chaparral) will contest the New Zealand Bloodstock Insurance Stakes (Listed, 1600m) before being aimed at the Warstep Stakes (Listed, 2000m) a fortnight later. Thurlow said the mile may be on the sharp side for the three-year-old, who shapes as a genuine staying type, but she had pleased in her work ahead of the trip south. Dux broke through over 2000 metres earlier in the preparation and was a solid fifth in the New Zealand Oaks (Gr 1, 2400m), a performance that confirmed the merit of the campaign. The Riccarton venture had been planned following that run, with the filly expected to benefit from stepping up in trip at her next outing. “The Warstep is the main one, the trip will be better for her as she’s an out and out stayer,” said Bill Thurlow, who trains in partnership with Sam O’Malley. “They may be a little bit sharp for her over a mile on Saturday, but she has been working well and looked good when she left here. She was very good and it didn’t surprise, we were confident she would go well and realistically didn’t think we could beat the top two of three but thought she could run in the first five. She hasn’t had the experience of the others, so we were quite happy with her.”

Otaki test for Crouch ahead of Australian trip

Crouch (Tarzino) will chase a first stakes victory in Saturday’s Hawke’s Bay Cup (Listed, 2200m) at Otaki before a potential trip to Australia. Trained by Mike Breslin, the gelding has been a consistent performer at staying trips, including placings in the Wellington Cup (Gr 3, 3200m) and a third in the Awapuni Gold Cup (Gr 2, 2100m). Crouch is expected to be suited by testing conditions and, if he performs well, will be aimed at the Sandown Cup (Listed, 3200m) next month. A start in the Warrnambool Cup (Listed, 2350m) has also been considered, although a single-run Australian campaign is more likely. Stablemate Donnybrook (Duelled) may join him at Otaki, with improvement expected on a softer surface. “I thought his run in the Awapuni Gold Cup was really good the other day, it showed that he is still competitive at lesser distances when he is a little bit fresher,” said Breslin, who also part-owns the gelding. “He does need some cut in the track, so it is good that he has got that on Saturday by the look of it, the track came up a Heavy 8 this [Thursday] morning. He is not good enough to be running at Carnival time in Australia, so this is a race I have picked out,” Breslin said. “He runs a strong two miles, he is a six-year-old gelding, so we might as well have a go.”

UK: Champion juvenile Gewan dies after gallop accident

Group 1-winning colt and Classic hopeful Gewan (Night Of Thunder) has died after being fatally injured in a racecourse gallop at Kempton on Thursday. The winner of last year's Dewhurst Stakes (Gr 1, 7f), when racing in the colours of Yulong, the son of Night Of Thunder (Dubawi) had been a leading fancy for next month's English 2,000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1m) for trainer Andrew Balding and Harrison Li's Forz Europe Ltd. “It is with extreme sadness that we report that Gewan, champion two-year-old of 2025, has suffered a fatal accident whilst having a racecourse gallop at Kempton this morning. The vets were on site and attended to the horse immediately but sadly he could not be saved," a statement on social media from Balding's Park House Stables read. “Our thoughts are with Harris Li and his family who owned Gewan, James Doyle, who was riding the horse and is luckily uninjured, and Marie Perrault, who has looked after the horse since he arrived at Kingsclere and rides him every day. We will never forget his brilliance when taking the Dewhurst in such impressive style, and we were so looking forward to seeing what he could achieve during his three-year-old career."

Oaks link boosts NZB National Online Yearling Sale

Ohope Wins (Credit: Race Images)

Saturday’s Australian Oaks (Gr 1, 2400m) has added timely interest to the NZB National Online Yearling Sale, which concludes next week.

The catalogue features a three-quarter sister to leading Oaks contender Ohope Wins (Ocean Park), while rival Soverato (Vadamos) is among a growing list of graduates to have emerged from the online sale.

Soverato was sourced for $10,000 from the 2024 edition before being on-sold and has since built a solid record, including a placing in the Adrian Knox Stakes (Gr 3, 2000m).

The sale’s honour roll is headed by Well Written (Written Tycoon), a $80,000 purchase who has gone on to earn more than $2.6 million with an unbeaten record, highlighted by wins in the New Zealand 1,000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) and a number of other major features.

Other graduates include De Armas (Ardrossan) and Hitabell (Embellish), both of whom have achieved black-type success from modest purchase prices.

A highlight of this year’s catalogue is Lot 87, offered by Haunui Farm, who is closely related to Ohope Wins and hails from a deep black-type family.

The filly is by the New Zealand Oaks (Gr 1, 2400m) winner’s sire Ocean Park (Thorn Park) and is out of a half-sister to Jimmy Choux (Thorn Park), a half-sister to Ohope Wins’ dam Choux Mania (Redoute’s Choice). This filly’s dam, Laced Up (Keeninsky), is also a half-sister to Group 1 winner Miss Wilson (Stratum).

Jimmy Choux won five Group 1 races including the New Zealand Derby (Gr 1, 2400m) and Rosehill Guineas (Gr 1, 2000m), was runner-up in the Cox Plate (Gr 1, 2040m) and was New Zealand’s Horse of the Year in 2010-11.

Laced Up is herself the dam of four winners from five foals to race, headed by Hong Kong Jockey Club Stakes (Gr 3, 1400m) winner Fancify (Niagara).

Haunui Farm managing director Mark Chitty said the filly had been given time to mature ahead of the sale.

“She’s a very nice-moving filly from a strong family and should appeal to buyers,” Chitty said.

The draft also includes progeny by a range of established and emerging sires, with the online format continuing to provide opportunities for later-maturing horses to be presented to the market.

A significant benefit of the digital catalogue is that all lots offered in the National Online Yearling Sale are eligible to be nominated for the lucrative Karaka Millions Series. Just nine months after they make their virtual sale-ring debut, graduates of the online sale can compete for a share in the 2027 $1 million Karaka Millions 2YO (RL, 1200m), followed by the 2028 $1.5 million Karaka Millions 3YO (RL, 1600m), as well as the NZB Mega Maiden Bonus Series.

As a one-off, New Zealand Thoroughbred Breeders' Association (NZTBA) have offered to extend the early bird offer for entries to the Entain-NZB Insurance Pearl Series for all fillies offered in the upcoming National Online Yearling Sale.

Bidding will run for a five-day period, commencing on Friday, April 10 with the first lot closing on Tuesday, April 14 at 6pm (NZT). Buyers must register on Gavelhouse Plus in advance in order to gain bidding approval.

The 104-lot catalogue is now live on Gavelhouse Plus and available to view here.

Joao Moreira fires in quartet on Hong Kong return for Caspar Fownes

Joao Moreira and Caspar Fownes (Credit: HKJC)

Completing a triumphant return to Hong Kong racing with a superb four-timer at Happy Valley on Wednesday night, Joao Moreira reunited with long-time ally Caspar Fownes in brilliant fashion as the battle for the 2025/26 trainers’ championship intensified.

Taking nine rides for Fownes, Moreira finished the evening with four wins and a second as Fownes erased Mark Newnham’s four-win lead in the championship to join the Australian horseman on 47 wins, and trail only by virtue of minor placings with 31 second placings to Newnham’s 36.

“Dream night. It’s nice to get a few wins on the board, Caspar said he was going to have a few horses ready to run well on this meeting and he’s done an amazing job,” Moreira said. “I just finished it off. He’s [Fownes] done everything and given me nice horses. When you, as a rider, are riding nice horses, your life is much easier.”

Starting his role as the Fownes’ stable retained jockey in supreme style, Moreira struck with Decision Link (Hellbent), Golden Brilliant (Sweynesse), Sky Cap (Capitalist) and Perfect General (Zoustar) to thrust Fownes closer to a fifth trainers’ championship.

The Brazilian’s spree began with Decision Link’s powerful finish to land the Class 5 Cochrane Handicap (1200m) after jumping from gate 12. Later, he scored aboard Golden Brilliant in the first section of the Class 4 D’Aguilar Handicap (1650m) before leading all the way on Sky Cap (133lb) in the second section of the Class 4 Wyndham Handicap (1200m).

Narrowly denied by Hugh Bowman’s calculated patience aboard David Eustace’s Silvery Breeze (Dundeel) to land the Class 3 Glenealy Handicap (1650m) by a head over Moreira’s Sky Vino (Vino Rosso), the ‘Magic Man’ completed his quartet when Hong Kong International Sale graduate Perfect General clinched the first section of the Class 3 On Lan Handicap (1200m).

“It’s fantastic. I’m so happy and glad to be back, especially in the winning circle,” the South American said. “It’s a pleasure to be back – I’m so pleased and proud to be back.

“I've got to be clear, it's a bit different now because I'm in a different position [retained stable jockey] because I'm tied into a stable. It feels like people are warming up to having me back, I feel it, and I'm very pleased and proud.”

Winner of four Hong Kong jockeys’ championships – in 2014/15, 2015/16, 2016/17 and 2020/21 – Moreira believes he can enhance Fownes’ hopes of landing a fifth trainers’ championship.

“I guess that's the reason Caspar has been asking me for so long to come back and give him some help. It worked out pretty good. I was supposed to come back earlier in the season, but it didn't work out, but I've come back to a crossed line where the championship is really on fire,” Moreira said.

“Caspar is probably having the best shot by having me on the team to back him up. That's why I'm here, to support him and hopefully to get the best results.”

Fownes lauded Moreira’s ride on Decision Link: “What a ride. He's got it one off the fence from gate 12 and it was a beautiful ride. It certainly got us yelling – it was nice to see him finish off like that. It's a wonderful way to start the partnership.”

Angus Chung slotted a double, successfully combining with Danny Shum’s General Redwood (Redwood) to land the second section of the Class 4 D’Aguilar Handicap (1650m) and Tony Cruz’s Tycoon Resources (Written Tycoon) in the Class 4 Graham Handicap (1000m).

A half-brother to dual Australian Group 1 winner Hungry Heart (Frankel), Tycoon Resources provided Chung with his first double since February.

“It’s been a tough time, so happy for the double. I try my best – it’s been a difficult run – but it’s nice to get two winners,” Chung said, while Cruz believes Tycoon Resources has a bright future.

“It was his debut run tonight and he won very well. I think he's a horse that's got some ability. He travelled here very good, everything was very good,” Cruz said. “I think he's got a good future.”

Zac Purton edged closer to another century of winners in a season when Ricky Yiu’s Smart Fighter (Sacred Falls) gave the eight-time Hong Kong champion jockey his 95th of the campaign with success in the Class 4 Sports Club Diamond Jubilee Challenge Cup Handicap (1200m).

Bowman regained second spot in the jockeys’ championship by sealing a double aboard John Size-trained Sight Hermoso (Headwater) in the second section of the Class 3 On Lan Handicap (1200m), taking his tally to 47 wins for the season – two more than Andrea Atzeni.

Hong Kong racing continues at Sha Tin on Sunday.

The Clayton Douglas-trained Dragon Scroll (Zoustar) claimed her maiden victory on Thursday when capturing a 1000-metre contest at Gosford.

Making what was her second start on the track following a debut seventh at Moe, the filly was ridden by Rachel King and defeated Redzero (Red Henno) by 0.3 lengths.

There was a further 4.1 lengths back to Sammy The Bull (Heroic Valour) in third place.

Sale: 2024 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale V: Widden Stud P: Dean Hawthorne Bloodstock, $950,000

Won: Hyland Race Colours Maiden Plate, 1300m, April 13, Warwick Farm

A $950,000 purchase from Widden Stud by Dean Hawthorne Bloodstock at the 2024 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale, Dragon Scroll runs in the familiar colours of Jonathan Munz’s Pinecliff Racing - who also race Group 1 winner Giga Kick (Scissor Kick) with Douglas.

She is a half-sister to the stakes-placed million-dollar earner Spywire (Trapeze Artist), being the fourth winner from as many foals to race out of the stakes-winning Denman (Lonhro) mare Secret Trail.

Widden Stud sold a yearling colt, the highest-priced yearling out of Anamoe's (Street Boss) first crop, from Secret Trail at Magic Millions this year to Ciaron Maher for $1.1 million.

Secret Trail had no foal last year, but is now in foal to champion sire Zoustar (Northern Meteor).
