Henry Field founded Newgate 15 years ago and now it is one of Australia’s leading stallion operations with Extreme Choice (Not A Single Doubt) the farm’s ring leader again this year with a service fee increase to $385,000 (all fees inc GST), from $330,000 in 2025.

Newgate announced its 2026 service fees on Wednesday with Extreme Choice leading a powerful and diverse roster of 15 stallions standing on 1,700 acres in the Hunter Valley.  Extreme Choice needs no introduction to breeders and he’s been priced accordingly.

He’s expensive, but the returns can be rewarding at places like Riverside Stables earlier this month when an Extreme Choice colt made $3 million to Coolmore and a filly $1.8 million to Clinton McDonald. They averaged $1.56 million at the Inglis Easter Sale and $822,000 at the Gold Coast Magic Millions.

What's On

Newgate’s director of stallions Bruce Slade has assured broodmare owners wanting to use Extreme Choice that it’s still possible they could be a part of his limited book this year.

“He’s striking better than ever and it’s a credit to Jim Carey and the team,” Slade told ANZ. “He covers one mare a day and, just to be safe, I would suggest breeders have a Plan B.”

As expected his services have continued to rise year-on-year to the highest in Australasia.  That’s off a season that commenced in the spring with a three-year-old crop headed by Flight Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) winner Apocalyptic and Caulfield Guineas Prelude (Gr 3, 1400m) scorer Estremo.

The Extreme Choice two-year-old division shared the limelight in the autumn with Golden Slipper (Gr 1, 1200m) lead-up winners Hidrix (Canonbury Stakes) and Paradoxium (Todman Stakes). Debutant Extremely Tempted chimed in with a front-running win in the Pioneer Services 2YO Handicap (1100m) at Hawkesbury last Wednesday and the flashy chestnut was going better than anything else on the line.

The latest crops are emerging after a sensational start at stud that generated Extreme Choice’s Group 1 winners She's Extreme (VRC Oaks), Espiona (Coolmore Classic), Knight's Choice (Melbourne Cup), Stay Inside (Golden Slipper Stakes) and Devil Night (Blue Diamond).

Extreme Choice is a sire of sires and his Blue Sapphire Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) winner Extreme Warrior has already gained traction in black-type this season courtesy of Merson Cooper Stakes (Listed, 1000m) scorer Eternal Warrior.

His sons Stay Inside and Tiger Of Malay are both standing at Newgate. Stay Inside won a Golden Slipper Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) and he’s already off the mark with first-crop black-type winners Incognito (Breeders' Plate), Lassified (Wellesley Stakes) and Blue Door (Kindergarten Stakes).

Both Stay Inside and Tiger Of Malay remain unchanged for 2026, with the former at $66,000 and the latter standing for $11,000.

Stay Inside is off to one of the best, if not the best starts by a sire at Newgate,” Slade said.

“He’s covered 511 mares in the last three seasons and the quality is increasing book by book.

Stay Inside (Credit: Sportpix)

Tiger Of Malay won a Group 2 Brisbane Sires' Produce Stakes and Group 3 Up And Coming and he’s been well-supported although we haven’t seen a lot of them racing.

“He’s siring good-looking colts like Canterbury winner Forest King and fillies like Tassie winner Momentslikethese who was runner-up in the Gold Sovereign Stakes.”

Capitalist (Written Tycoon), who also remains unchanged at $44,000, leads a group of rising 13-year-old stallions on the Newgate roster alongside Russian Revolution (Snitzel).

“Capitalist looks under-priced at $44,000,” Slade said. “He’s the leading active sire for winners (143) in Australia and Hong Kong (12) this season and there’s a good one in his current two-year-old crop named Rich on Bubbles (Valley Pearl Stakes and Magic Millions SA Classic).”

Russian Revolution is currently in the top ten in Australia this season for winners (113) and wins (178) and the best is yet to come from the son of Snitzel (Redoute’s Choice) who remains at $33,000.

He sired another Group 1 winner when Libertad went to Perth to win the Winterbottom Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) in November and his New Zealand two-year-old filly Lara Antipova added her name to his Group 1 list in the Sistema Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) last month.

Ozzmosis (Zoustar) won the stallion-making Coolmore Stud Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) and he has 143 first-crop foals on the ground this season. He’s a fourth-generation Coolmore Stud Stakes winner following Zoustar, Northern Meteor and Encosta De Lago (Fairy King). He is another that remains unchanged at $44,000.

“They’re straightforward foals with plenty of length and quality from books of fast, sharp mares,” Slade said. “And they have the Zoustar head, leg, muscle and momentum.”

Tassort (Brazen Beau) won the Golden Gift (1100m) at Rosehill for James Cummings and sired a smart juvenile winner this season when Toorak Jewel was an on-pace winner of the $500,000 The Debut (1000m) on Magic Million Day in January.

“He covered 600 mares in his first four seasons and those early winners were off a $10,000 fee,” Slade said of Tassort, who drops down slightly to $33,000.

“The quality of his mares has improved and the market for his stock in Hong Kong is also growing.”

Artorius (Flying Artie), who is unchanged at $22,000, bookended his career with Group 1 victories in the Blue Diamond Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) and Canterbury Stakes (Gr 1, 1300m) and he’s siring precocious, athletic horses ready to debut at the spring carnivals.

“They’re high-calibre good-moving types and keep in mind he won a Blue Diamond and so did his damsire Redoute’s Choice,” Slade said.

State Of Rest (Starspangledbanner) will cover his fourth book in 2026 after a career highlighted by Group 1 victories at Royal Ascot, Saratoga, Longchamp and Moonee Valley in the 2021 Cox Plate (Gr 1, 2040m).

Slade credits his shareholders for ensuring the Irish-bred champion will make a mark in the breeding barn by keeping his fee at $22,000 this year.

“He’s exciting and mega commercial from a magnificent family and his first two-year-old crop will start surfacing this time next year as autumn two year-olds.”

In The Congo (Snitzel) is also value added at a $22,000 fee according to Slade, down from $27,500 in 2025.

“He will make a mark pretty quickly with his first crop racing next season,” Slade said. “He beat Anamoe in the Group 1 Golden Rose and he’s a three-quarter brother to Autumn Glow.”

That same assessment applies to King’s Gambit (I Am Invincible) who is also available at an unchanged $22,000.

“He won a Debutant Stakes in Melbourne and a Roman Consul Stakes at Rosehill,” Slade added. “He’s a magnificent son of I Am Invincible and is siring great-looking stock.”

Stay Inside is off to one of the best, if not the best starts by a sire at Newgate. He’s covered 511 mares in the last three seasons and the quality is increasing book by book

BRUCE SLADE

Brutal (O’Reilly) sired Sentimental Legend from his second crop to win the WATC Derby (Gr 2, 2400m) last weekend following a winning classic trial in the Melvista Stakes (Listed, 2200m) last month.

“He also got Nepotism from that same crop to win last year’s ATC Champagne Stakes at Randwick,” Slade said. “They’re big with scope and brains and his last two books have been the best yet.”

Cosmic Force (Deep Field) has continued to average 140 mares at Newgate after getting off to a promising start with Stakes winners Raging Force, Give Me Space, Cosmic Fire, Stay Focused and Wonder Boy. He remains at $16,500, while making up the roster is Profiteer (Capitalist), at an unchanged price of $11,000, and Wild Ruler (Snitzel) at an also unchanged $27,500.

“His yearlings have sold to $200,000 and breeders like him because he sires a consistent type,” Slade continued. “And trainers want to buy them because they have ability and are easy to work with.”

Pair of Extreme Choice mares added to Chairman’s Sale

Wollombi winning The Vanity (Credit: Sportpix)

Having had his progeny sell well at the recent Inglis Easter Yearling Sale, buyers will be afforded an opportunity to access the progeny of Extreme Choice (Not A Single Doubt) with a pair of well-credentialled mares in foal to him being the latest additions to next month's Inglis Chairman’s Sale.

The entry of both Hazlebrook (Hinchinbrook) and Sizzlefly (Sizzling) means there will be a trio of mares carrying foals by Newgate's stellar sire, joining fellow headline Newgate Farm mare Kiki Express (Sepoy).

Hazlebrook's first foal is Group 3 winner Wollombi (Extreme Choice), while her next tryst with Extreme Choice resulted in a colt that realised $2 million at the yearling sales earlier in the year.

The nine Extreme Choice yearlings sold at the Easter Yearling Sale averaged an incredible $1.56 million, with seven realising in excess of $1,000,000, and the sire will stand for a fee of $385,000 (inc GST) in 2026.

Newgate Farm’s Henry Field said the addition of Hazlebrook and Sizzlefly to the Chairman’s catalogue provided buyers with a further two outstanding opportunities to access the sire.

“I remember when Matthew [Sandblom] bought Hazlebrook at the Inglis Australian Broodmare Sale, she was the mare that Matthew picked out and was probably the mare he was most keen to buy at the sale, additionally Adam Cook thought she was the best value mare,'' Field said.

“She has been a revelation, producing good looking stock that can run and clearly she has great chemistry with Extreme Choice. There is no such thing as a certainty in racing, but the likelihood of this mare producing a good foal that can run is about as close as you’ll get in a breeding sense!

“Sizzlefly is a stakes performed mare with natural speed and the type of profile that continues to resonate strongly with the market. She is a very pretty mare that is getting good looking stock – her Home Affairs weanling would be one of the top-rated foals on the farm and physically I think she is a bullseye for Extreme Choice.''

The 2026 edition of the Chairman's Sale will be held at Riverside on Thursday May 7, with supplementary entries for the sale remaining open but must close soon. To enter, contact a member of the Inglis bloodstock team or click here.

Flying Fizz tops Inglis Digital April (Early) Sale

Flying Fizz (Credit: Racing Photos)

Flying Fizz (Street Boss) will be retired by purchaser Corumbene and sent straight to stud after selling for a sale-topping $175,000 during the Inglis Digital April (Early), which came to a close on Wednesday.

The five-year-old was offered by trainer Matthew Williams on behalf of the mare’s owners, who were delighted with the result.

“If we’d got half that we’d have thought it was a great result,’’ Williams said. “We’ve been using Inglis Digital for years, we sold Literary Magnate for over $500,000 a couple of years ago, we’ve sold other mares too and we’ve found the platform terrific. Even the horses that don’t have that sort of higher value you can get really good results with.”

Corumbene’s Tommy Altomonte purchased the mare – his first online purchase – and couldn’t have been happier with the process.

“She’s our first ever purchase online but after today’s experience, I can see why Inglis Digital is getting bigger and bigger and everyone raves about it,’’ Altomonte said. "I did the bidding myself and it was fantastic, the layout of the site was so clear and made it so easy to bid and buy.

“Our new stud manager Tyler Frazer, who only started a few weeks ago, sent me the link to Flying Fizz three or four days ago and we did some research and everything with her scored really well on our end and how we like to breed, that whole sire line and she’s from a good family so we thought ‘let’s have a crack’ and we did.''

Second-top lot honours were shared between the three-year-old colt Master Of The Air (Dundeel) and the broodmare Brulee (Hinchinbrook) – in foal to The Autumn Sun (Redoute’s Choice) – both realising $100,000.

Another significant result in tonight’s sale was the broodmare Twist Tops (Beneteau) – dam of this season’s stakes-winning juvenile Gin Twist (Home Affairs) – who sold to Doug Walker for $90,000.

“We were looking at going to the broodmare sales in the coming weeks and buy some mares but then I saw her come up on Inglis Digital and thought I’d have a crack early,’’ Walker said.

“I’ve been watching Gin Twist, I was actually hoping she got into the [Golden] Slipper but either way I think she has an exciting future. I’ll go back to Home Affairs with her this season."

In total the April (Early) Sale grossed $3,629,300. Entries are now open for the Inglis Digital April (Late) Online Sale, featuring the first of two Australian Broodmare Sale Sessions exclusively for race fillies and broodmares.

Bidding for the April (Late) Sale will open on Friday, April 24 and close out over two days, with the race fillies and broodmares being offered on one day and closing out from 10am on Thursday, April 30, with the balance of the catalogue closing out on the prior day, Wednesday, April 29. Waller out to strike while iron is hot with Campione D’Italia

Having scored in the Inglis Sires' Produce Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) on April 4, the Chris Waller-trained colt Campione D'Italia (Snitzel) will line up in Saturday's Champagne Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) just a fortnight later. The son of Snitzel (Redoute’s Choice) will bid to emulate former Waller stablemate Militarize (Dundeel) three years ago and land the Sires' Produce-Champagne Stakes double, and Waller feels the colt is worth going back to the well with given his current vein of form. "Group 1s are so hard to win, and when you're in good form and there's a Group 1 race just for two-year-olds in your backyard, [it's hard to ignore]," Waller said. "When he returns, he will have a Group 1 penalty in The Run To The Rose. We've got a few up-and-comers coming through, and you don't know where you draw. Then you've got to go to the Caulfield Guineas and travel first time around Caulfield. There are a lot of unknowns, whereas he's here." Campione D'Italia has also scored in the Skyline Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) from four starts in his debut campaign.

Magic Time out to regain All Aged crown

Magic Time (Credit: Racing Photos)

Grahame Begg's 2024 All Aged Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) winner Magic Time (Hellbent) will be back to reclaim her crown at Randwick on Saturday as the mare takes on the Group 1 sprint. Having scored by 0.4 lengths over Amenable (Lonhro) in 2024, the six-year-old was seventh in last year's renewal and is looking for a better result this time around. In two runs so far this preparation, Magic Time has run ninth in the William Reid Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) and seventh in the T J Smith Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m). "It's obviously a good race. They don't give them away," Begg said. "This has been her preferred distance. She looks in great order, and she worked strongly [on Tuesday] morning at Randwick. The other day, she ended up being stuck down on the inside of runners. She got a bit of a bump at the start, and she over-raced in the blinkers and fired up. It took a good four hundred metres to get back and get cover, but then she was back down hemmed in on the inside and probably on the worst part of the track after doing a bit of work. She only got beaten a touch over three lengths. We felt she ran well, so we've taken the blinkers off her and we'll see what happens."

All Aged task for Fangirl

Four-time Group 1 winner Fangirl (Sebring) will make her seasonal return on Saturday when she tackles the All Aged Stakes at Randwick. Last seen running fourth in the Empire Rose Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) on November 1, the seven-year-old mare is a stable favourite of trainer Chris Waller's and landed the $1 million 7 Stakes (1600m) among four runs in the spring. “I don’t see her as an unlucky horse, I see her as a good horse that’s been beaten by some good horses and that’s beaten some good horses,’’ Waller told Racing NSW. “I see her as a King Charles winner, an unlucky runner behind Anamoe a few times but she’s had a great career and has done us pretty proud. She’s a star. She’s close to my favourite, very close. She’s always great first-up, she’s not taken on seasoned horses when she’s resumed previously so that’s the only difference. We’ve been working toward this day and she’s well ahead of schedule and ready to run well. My strapper said to me she’s in a better attitude to what she was in the spring. I feed off that information.”

JRA Plate test for Kiwi Group 1 scorer

Last-start NZ Thoroughbred Breeders' Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) winner She's A Dealer (Ace High) will make her third start in Australia on Saturday when she tackles the JRA Plate (Gr 3, 2000m). Trained by Roger James and Robert Wellwood, the four-year-old daughter of Ace High (High Chaparral) will be chasing Australian black-type having run fifth in last year's Queensland Oaks (Gr 1, 2200m). "She's done well this campaign and she's crying out to go 2000 metres," James said. "There was an option here [New Zealand], but we thought the Australian Black Type had more of an appeal and the timing was right, so here she is. She's very accomplished with her travelling. She arrived over late Monday night, she travelled very well and settled in very quickly. I think we will be visiting Australia a bit more regularly with her from here on in. We'll just put our toe in the water this prep and then she'll have a spell and we'll plan out from the result of Saturday as to where we head in the spring and summer of next season. I don't doubt her ability. She's a good mare."

Ambassadorial chasing Cup start at Mornington

The Tony and Calvin McEvoy-trained Ambassadorial (Fiorente) will be chasing a spot in October's Caulfield Cup (Gr 1, 2400m) via a win in Saturday's Mornington Cup (Listed, 2400m). Having had three wins from 12 starts with Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott before going winless in eight starts with Alex Rae, the now five-year-old gelding has won three and placed in a further two of his five starts for the McEvoy's and arrives into this weekend's Listed contest after completing a hat-trick of victories in the Easter Cup (Gr 3, 2000m). "He's come through it [the Easter Cup] really well," Calvin McEvoy said. "He's come out of it better than he went into it. He's a lovely horse and the test will be the mile-and-a-half and I'm excited to see if he'll handle it. [Being at] Mornington, the way he races, it shouldn't be too much of a problem, but they gave him 15 points following that win, so there's nowhere to hide now after winning that Group 3."

Outside draw a worry for Desert Lightning

Connections of Desert Lightning (Pride Of Dubai) will weigh up whether to accept in Saturday's Hareeba Stakes (Listed, 1200m) after the gelding drew the outside barrier in the 17-horse contest. The field limit for this weekend's race is 15, with a further two emergency acceptors, and Desert Lightning will be first-up into the Listed race having last been seen running fifth in the Crystal Mile (Gr 2, 1600m) in October. "He's really just there first-up for a fitness run, so we'll have a good look at the race and see whether we save him for another day," Katherine Coleman, who trains in partnership with Peter Moody, said. "It's not the end of the world. He's trialled really nicely this time. He's nice and fresh, he seems in a good headspace for an older horse. He's really enjoying his work. Whether he runs first-up on Saturday, or whether we wait another day, we'll make that decision, but I think he can run well if we decide to go there."

Sir Delius given the OK sign for Cox Plate

Last-start Queen Elizabeth Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m) winner Sir Delius (Frankel) will be able to target October's Cox Plate (Gr 1, 2040m) after Racing Victoria (RV) lifted the embargo that was placed on the five-year-old last spring. Having been the pre-race favourite for last year’s Cox Plate and Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m), Sir Delius was ruled out of both races after independent specialist scans revealed the horse was at a "heightened risk" of injury. That position was revised on Tuesday. “We are advised by Racing New South Wales that Sir Delius underwent all the necessary requirements, in accordance with the Rules of Racing and his veterinary embargo, to be cleared to resume racing,” an RV statement read. “On that basis, the horse will be permitted to start in Victoria without the need for a further scan, unless of course the horse is seeking to compete in the Lexus Melbourne Cup.” Sir Delius’ co-trainer, Adrian Bott, told The Verdict on Monday that he would be aimed at the race. “Yeah, I think well and truly [that’s the race he will be set for],” Bott said. “The track there will be suitable for him. I think a high-pressure 2000 metres is right in his sweet spot.”

Flemington campaign on radar for Autumn Glow

Autumn Glow (Credit: Sportpix)

A Melbourne spring campaign is firmly on the agenda for Autumn Glow (The Autumn Sun), with owner John Messara keen to target feature races at Flemington. Messara said the famous straight and mile races were of particular interest as he maps out the mare’s future. “There’s lovely races in Melbourne over a mile. I wouldn’t mind taking her to Melbourne. I’d love to run her at Flemington. I’d very much like to go that way,” he told Racing.com. The plans follow Autumn Glow’s first attempt at 2000 metres in the Queen Elizabeth Stakes, where she finished third, reinforcing a likely return to shorter distances. “I was doubtful, but nevertheless, it was worth having a go. At the end of the day, it’s a sport, and you’ve got to have a go,” Messara said. “We know now that she’s a sprinter-miler and we’ll stick to those divisions.” While the focus is expected to remain around the mile, Messara has not completely ruled out another attempt at longer trips. “I’d feel a lot more confident if we maintained a programme up to about a mile,” Messara said. “I think we’ll probably do that, but I have an open view on it. She’s still developing,” he said. An Everest campaign also remains under consideration, with strong interest from slot holders. “I’ve had a lot of approaches over the last 12 months, of people willing to provide an Everest slot. She’d get in there if we wanted to go that way,” Messara said.

Overpass to join strong Australian Royal Ascot contingent

Overpass (Vancouver) will be among a record Australian sprinting contingent at Royal Ascot in June after connections confirmed the Bjorn Baker-trained star will travel to England. The decision was made by the ownership group managed by Darby Syndications, with Overpass, winner of more than $12.5 million in prize-money, set to target the King Charles III Stakes (Gr 1, 5f) on the opening day of the carnival. His inclusion could see as many as six Australian-trained sprinters line up at the prestigious meeting, alongside Joliestar (Zoustar), Generosity (Divine Prophet), Lady Of Camelot (Written Tycoon), Charm Stone (I Am Invincible) and Asfoora (Flying Artie). Trainer Chris Waller is set to aim five-time Group 1 winner Joliestar at the Queen Elizabeth Jubilee Stakes (Gr 1, 6f), while Generosity is also expected to contest the King Charles III Stakes, subject to her performance in the Robert Sangster Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m). Lady Of Camelot could contest both major sprints for trainers Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott, while Charm Stone is also on track for the meeting. Meanwhile, Henry Dwyer will again be represented by Asfoora, who won the King Charles III Stakes in 2024 before adding further Group 1 success in Europe.

Switzerland's brother wins on debut

The full sibling to Coolmore Stud Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) winner Switzerland (Snitzel), St Gotthard, showed determination to land the Kia Ora Bloodlines to Headlines Handicap (1200m) at Warwick Farm on Wednesday, edging out Peyton (Zoustar) by 0.2 lengths under James McDonald. The colt is a graduate of the Inglis Easter sale, when knocked down by Arrowfield Stud for $2.7 million to Tom Magnier. McDonald was impressed with his performance. “He's just a beautiful horse and everything he does, he does with ease,” McDonald said. “He's got a nice nature. He's the full package. He was in foreign territory there, being outside the leader and left in front a long way from home. He just felt like he floated a little bit, but he's got plenty of talent and he's a beautiful horse going forward.” Trainer Chris Waller indicated the focus will be on education, with a long-term view toward the colt’s three-year-old season. “They need to have a few runs to get ready for their three-year-old year, so that's the first box ticked for all four of our horses here,” Waller said.

Nottle guides Black Caviar daughter to Sandown win

Leading Western Australian apprentice Holly Nottle enjoyed a memorable moment at Sandown, steering Persian Caviar (Written Tycoon), a daughter of champion mare Black Caviar (Bel Esprit), to victory in the National Apprentice Race Series. Nottle produced a polished ride to land the Benchmark 66 (1200m) by 0.8 lengths over Fearless Writer (Written Tycoon), adding to what has already been a standout season for the young rider, who sits second on the WA Jockeys’ Premiership behind Willie Pike. Growing up on a farm two hours east of Perth, Nottle may not have seen Black Caviar race in the flesh, but the champion racehorse certainly had an effect on a then young girl. “Over in WA at Horseland they had Black Caviar horse brush bags, and I did buy a few of those,” Nottle told Racing.com. “I have a whole set of Black Caviar brushes, probably ten different brushes and then a little bag that they all come in. When I was younger, I did know she was a great racehorse, but I didn't really take into account how great she was. Now that I'm in the racing industry, and when I saw the draw, I thought I'm a very lucky person to ride Persian Caviar. It's certainly a privilege to ride one of Black Caviar's foals.” Just 11 months into her riding career, Nottle has already amassed 117 winners and is closing in on Pike in the WA title race. “I've been getting a lot of great opportunities over in the west and Pikey is one that you want to compete with and beat the most,” she said. “It's good being able to work towards that.”

McMahon confirmed as ATC CEO

Steve McMahon (Credit: Sportpix)

The Australian Turf Club (ATC) has confirmed Steve McMahon as its chief executive officer (CEO) following seven months in the interim role. Chairman Tim Hale said McMahon’s leadership during that period had provided clarity around the club’s direction and built strong momentum. “The Board is pleased to confirm the appointment following a strong period of leadership by Steve,” Hale said. “There is clear momentum across the Club and we are confident in the focus on financial strength, industry alignment and enhancing the Member experience.” McMahon will lead the club with a focus on three key priorities: strengthening financial performance, improving the raceday experience and building stronger industry alignment. “It’s a privilege to be appointed CEO of the Australian Turf Club,” McMahon said. “These seven months have given me clarity and focus on financial performance while delivering long-term value for ATC members, owners and the broader racing industry.” He emphasised a disciplined approach to financial management, alongside a commitment to enhancing experiences for members, owners and racegoers. “Our aim is to deliver world-class racing and event experiences that engage existing audiences while attracting new raceday customers,” he said. McMahon also highlighted the importance of collaboration across the industry to support sustainable growth. “Alignment across the industry is critical. Working collaboratively will support sustainable growth for racing.” McMahon brings extensive experience across government and racing administration, including previous roles with the NSW Trainers Association and within the ATC.

Showcase of Showjumping to attract racing crossover in Sydney

The upcoming Showcase of Showjumping, to be held at the Windsor/Richmond polo fields from April 23–26, is set to again highlight the sport’s premium positioning, with a focus on entertainment, hospitality and high-end presentation. Staged in a boutique environment featuring VIP marquees and full-service catering, the event aims to elevate showjumping beyond traditional showground settings and attract broader commercial interest. This year’s edition is expected to draw notable crossover from the thoroughbred industry, with jockey Jamie Melham set to compete on the final day, Sunday, April 26. Promising junior rider Charlie Magnier, having just won the most successful boy rider at the Royal Easter show, will also be in action, with his parents Tom and Sophie Magnier among those anticipated to attend, alongside leading trainer Ciaron Maher and prominent owners Debbie Kepitis and Linda Huddy. The event continues to position itself as a platform to engage high net worth audiences and introduce new investment into the sport, with major sponsorship support from Divas Beverages. Organisers are seeking to leverage the presence of racing identities and industry figures to build wider awareness and profile for showjumping in Australia. You can find more information here.

Single Red set for Queensland Oaks tilt, Elle Sourit targets black-type

Andrew Forsman has outlined a Queensland winter target for promising filly Single Red (Vanbrugh), who is being aimed at the Queensland Oaks (Gr 1, 2200m) at Eagle Farm on June 6 following a recent trial at Cambridge. Resuming from a break after finishing third in the New Zealand Oaks (Gr 1, 2400m), the Vanbrugh (Encosta De Lago) filly pleased her trainer in a runner-up trial effort. “She closed well for second in her trial yesterday behind To Cap It All and we weren’t too worried about the result, but it was still a pleasing outing and nice to see her stretch out as she did,” Forsman said. “She’s come off a little freshen-up after not having a race for a while, so we just didn't want to go to the races when she resumes too fresh and above herself.” Forsman believes the reduced trip of the Queensland Oaks will suit. “I think it gives her a better chance of being competitive at that trip.” Meanwhile, stablemate Elle Sourit (Ocean Park) will chase her first black-type success in Saturday’s Easter Handicap (Gr 3, 1600m) at Ellerslie. “I think given how she's bred, she's always been quite a narrow, fragile type of horse,” he said. “Physically, she's only just starting to look the part, she's just one of those mares that have taken a bit of time to come to it. You can't really fault her formline. I thought she was unlucky not to have won last start at Te Aroha and one more stride, she probably wins. She's worked her way through the grades, and now she's up against some seasoned, proper open class horses in what will be a full field. She does tend to get back in her races, so it'll be a big step up and a good test for her on Saturday.”

Guy eyes further success with Lupo Solitario

Matamata trainer Danica Guy will look to showcase her rehabilitation expertise again when Lupo Solitario (Santono Aladdin) lines up in the Easter Handicap at Ellerslie. Guy, who combines training with rehabilitating horses for other stables, has built a reputation for returning gallopers to form, most notably with Legarto (Proisir). The star mare spent an extended period under her care recovering from a tendon injury before returning to win the Herbie Dyke Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m) and Bonecrusher New Zealand Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m) earlier this year. More recently, Guy has applied the same approach to Lupo Solitario. The gelding showed early promise in New Zealand, winning three of his first four starts, including the Bonecrusher Stakes (Gr 3, 1400m), before a stint in Hong Kong where he struggled to recapture that form. After returning to Guy’s care, he underwent a lengthy rehabilitation period, overcoming physical issues, particularly with his feet, before returning to winning form at Pukekohe last month. “His Hong Kong owner got in touch with me offering to gift him back and he also paid his return fare, which was very generous of him, and I now race him with my parents,” Guy said on Wednesday. “When he arrived back he was out of sorts. It was a matter of getting him right step by step.” Managed carefully through treadmill and pool work due to wet conditions, Lupo Solitario has continued to progress, with his recent win confirming a shot at Saturday’s feature. “His feet still have to be managed, which means he can’t work on wet sand tracks or go out in the paddock, and he’s pretty much spent the last two weeks inside,” Guy said. “I’m just hoping the track improves, the better the ground, the better his chances.”

Didham confident ahead of Ashburton quartet

Canterbury trainer Richard Didham is expecting strong performances from his four runners at Ashburton on Thursday, led by Candle (Super Easy) in The Jan Hay Handicap (1200m). “You don’t get any better form in the South Island at the moment, and she was only four lengths away the other day in the open race,” Didham said. “She’s back to a Rating 75 with a claim and she does get back in her races, but I’m expecting her to be flying home. We were probably hopeful of a wee bit of rain, but she should still be right in it with that claim.” Speed Dial (Time Test) drops in grade for The David Walsh Handicap (1600m). “I think she was in the wrong part of the track on the inside,” Didham said. “She was only a neck back off fourth and this is essentially a drop back in grade again and with only nine runners, I’m expecting her to bring back that good form again.” Roca Mile (El Roca) steps up to 2200 metres. “There was no mile for him and I’m expecting him to go well. He’s had one go over the distance, but when he wasn’t bang on and I would be disappointed if he doesn’t run in the money,” Didham said. In the opener, Private Treaty (Tivaci) shapes as a leading chance. “Private Treaty has been a bit unlucky for us with 11 starts for five seconds and a third,” Didham said. “She’s been very close to winning one and back on a better track, I know it was soft last time but it was closer to heavy, could be the difference for her.”

UAE: Ed Crisford to be private trainer to Sheikh Ahmed bin Rashid Al Maktoum

Ed Crisford will no longer train in partnership with his father Simon after he took up an opportunity to be private trainer to Sheikh Ahmed bin Rashid Al Maktoum in Dubai. The move comes after the owner’s previous trainer Michael Costa relocated to Australia after four years in the role. Sheikh Ahmed’s stable races under the ARM banner and Crisford, who has trained on a joint-licence with his dad Simon since 2020, is hoping some of their horses will be able to compete internationally from a European summer base. “It’s a great honour to be asked to train for Sheikh Ahmed. I have been watching his horses win major races around the world my entire life," Ed Crisford told the Racing Post. "Sheikh Ahmed is so passionate about the sport. I feel privileged to have been asked to build on the remarkable success he has enjoyed as an owner."

HK: O’Brien relishes Ka Ying Rising challenge with Comanche Brave

Donnacha O’Brien has been around many elite horses in his relatively short career and knows better than to shy away from a challenge because of one opponent, no matter how talented. But taking on Ka Ying Rising (Shamexpress) seems sporting in the extreme. Yet O’Brien is doing just that with lightly-raced Comanche Brave (Wootton Bassett) in the Chairman’s Sprint Prize (Gr 1, 1200m) on Champions Day on Sunday, April 26. The 27-year-old son of Aidan O’Brien and brother of Joseph, comes from one of Ireland’s most famous racing families. He was twice champion jockey there and has sent out nine Group 1 winners since taking out a trainer’s licence six years ago. He trains just under 100 horses, and a win in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf (Gr 1, 8f) at Del Mar in October saw him strike a blow outside his normal orbit. Trips to the Middle East with Comanche Brave followed, and now he is eager to keep progressing. “It’s lovely to have had good success, and this is another step at the big international meetings, and I’m excited to see how it goes. Comanche Brave is a nice horse who seems to be improving,” O’Brien said. “He was third in the Abu Dhabi Gold Cup and then third in the 1351 Turf Sprint but I’ve always wanted to have a go back at sprint trips with him. He shows a lot of pace at home but he kept running well at a mile. We’ve just got to bite the bullet now, come back to six furlongs, and see how we go. We are under no illusions; Ka Ying Rising is an absolute machine. He’s done nothing but impress me in everything I’ve seen him do. He’s so tactical; he just looks rock solid.”

Three for Tasleet

Azleet (3 f ex Azure Mist by Bahamian Bounty) provided her sire Tasleet (Showcasing) with his third individual stakes winner when causing a shock in Wednesday’s Nell Gwyn Stakes (Gr 3, 7f) at Newmarket. Ridden by Marco Ghiani for trainer Stuart Williams, the three-year-old filly kept on well inside the final furlong to gamely deny American Queen (Havana Grey) by a neck. There was a further length and a half back to Act Of Kindness (Siyouni) in third. Bred by Dullingham Park Stud and David Noblett, Azleet is raced by Noblett and partner and is a half-sister to winners Garrel Glen (Mount Nelson) and Bracken Brae (Champs Elysees) being out of the Bahamian Bounty (Cadeaux Genereux) mare Azure Mist. Tasleet is currently standing at Star Born Stud in India.

317 for Dubawi

Morshdi (3 c ex Into The Mystic by Galileo) became the 317th individual stakes winner for Darley’s all-conquering sire Dubawi (Dubai Millennium) when landing Wednesday’s Feilden Stakes (Listed, 1m 1f) at Newmarket. Ridden by Tom Marquand for trainer William Haggas, the three-year-old colt kept on inside the final furlong to beat Poseidon’s Warrior (Sea The Stars) by a length with a further length and a half back to Bourbon Blues (Space Blues) in third. Bred by Godolphin and racing in the silks of Sheikh Ahmed Al Maktoum, Morshdi is a brother to Group 2 winner Nakheel being out of the stakes-winning Galileo (Sadler’s Wells) mare Into The Mystic. Dubawi is standing at Dalham Hall Stud for a fee of £350,000 (approx. AU$663,920).

UK: Hat-trick of stakes wins for progressive Damysus

Improving four-year-old Damysus (4 c Frankel - Legerete by Rahy) racked up a hat-trick of stakes successes when proving much the best in Wednesday’s Earl Of Sefton Stakes (Gr 3, 1m 1f) at Newmarket. The John and Thady Gosden-trained colt was ridden by James Doyle and proved three and three-quarter lengths too strong for fellow Wathnan Racing-owned rival King’s Gambit (Saxon Warrior). Boiling Point (Too Darn Hot) finished a further length and three-quarters back in third place. The win added to Damysus’ victories in the Prix Nureyev (Listed, 2000m) and Darley Stakes (Gr 3, 1m 1f) last season.

IRE: One-time Derby favourite The Lion In Winter back in winner’s circle

The Aidan O’Brien-trained The Lion In Winter (4 c Sea The Stars - What A Home by Lope De Vega) got back in the winner’s enclosure for the first time since August 2024 when scoring in Wednesday’s Heritage Stakes (Listed, 1m) at Leopardstown. Ridden by Wayne Lordan, the one-time Epsom Derby (Gr 1, 1m 4f) favourite defeated stablemate Expanded (Wootton Bassett) by a half-length. There was a further length and three-quarters back to Norwalk Havoc (Showcasing) in third.

UK: Palace Pier colt tops strong opening session at Craven Breeze-Up Sale

The Tattersalls Craven Breeze-Up Sale got off to a solid start, headlined by a Palace Pier (Kingman) colt from Tally-Ho Stud who topped the opening session at 450,000gns (approx. AU$896,500) when secured by Blandford Bloodstock’s Richard Brown. “He is a fine, strong horse and has a very impressive physical,” Brown said. “I am a big fan of the stallion, and I think he has made a very good start. I loved this horse as a yearling and vetted him but did not have anyone for him. I don't have the best memory, but I remembered him! He is from a vendor who I have had so much success buying from, and the colt did a tremendous breeze. I don't think he enjoyed the course here. When he hit the rising ground here, he came out powerfully, and I think that is a good sign.” On future plans, Brown said: “Although he is one of the biggest colts in the sale, I think he is a horse we can move forward with. We can try to get him to Ascot, but if he doesn't make it, then we have a horse for the future. The mare was very talented and it all added up.” The colt had been pinhooked from Book 2 of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale for 100,000gns by Hamish Macauley Bloodstock and is out of dual Group 1 winner Majmu (Redoute’s Choice), a champion two-year-old in South Africa. Trade overall was firm, with 11 lots making 200,000gns (approx. AU$398,450) or more and the median rising six per cent on the equivalent session in 2025.

ANZ News

Diameter (Brazen Beau) provided another huge tick for his undersung sire and elevated his dam up another rung as a bonafide star of Darley’s breeding barn in taking Saturday’s important Fernhill Mile (Listed, 1600m).

Godolphin’s Chris Waller-trained two-year-old colt became the third stakes winner from just five runners for his mother Circular (Street Cry), who profiles in a sweet spot for broodmare success. She’s from a superb family and won worthy black type in Flemington’s Matron Stakes (Gr 3, 1600m), and only expended herself on the racetrack 20 times, heading to the breeding barn far from fully spent.

Continuing the pattern of all things rounded, Diameter follows in the wake of the mare’s second runner Parisal (Astern) - cleverly named after a round boat found in India - who won two Group 3s and a Listed, and her third runner, Cylinder (Exceed And Excel).

An outstanding sprinter and now a Darley sire, Cylinder won the Newmarket Handicap (Gr 1, 1200m) plus three Group 2s and a Group 3. He also placed a further twice at the top tier - including with his second in the Golden Slipper (Gr 1, 1200m) 15 minutes before Parisal won Moonee Valley’s Typhoon Tracy Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m).

Saturday’s success of Diameter - who’ll strive to become Brazen Beau’s (I Am Invincible) fourth elite winner in this weekend’s Champagne Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) - was loudly cheered by Darley, perhaps more so than some other stakes wins.

For he, like Cylinder and Parisal, hails from one of the blue army’s most successful families, and probably the best they inherited in their buy-out of Woodlands Stud in 2008.

Circular’s dam Hexameter (Octagonal) is a three-quarter sister to the Ingham brothers’ mighty Lonhro (Octagonal) and his triple Group 1-winning brother Niello, plus a third black type-winning full-sibling in the mare Shannara.

So it’s through Octagonal (Zabeel) to Hexameter that we get all these shape names in the lineage, but is there another common thread wrapping around Circular’s three stakes winners?

Is there perhaps the repeat of a common ancestor at play? Yes, but not really. The only horse doubled up on both sides of each of the three pedigrees is Danzig (Northern Dancer).

Poor old Danzig. His influence can’t be denied, but he really is everywhere, all the better to be taken for granted, especially when one of your sons is the GOAT that was Danehill.

Also, Cylinder, Parisal and Diameter have three quite different sires. Yes they were all sprinters - but what Australian sires weren’t?

“We have Exceed And Excel - a big, strong, powerful horse,” Darley’s head of stallions Alastair Pulford tells It’s In The Blood.

“Astern is much more like his own sire Medaglia D’Oro - lengthier than Exceed And Excel, and not as muscular.

“And Brazen Beau is smaller and stronger, less scope, and a real sprinting type which, being inbred to both Danzig and Bletchingly, you might expect.”

So, in all likelihood, the most powerful common factor behind these three stakes-winning half-siblings is, quite simply, the involvement of one of the most valuable things you can have in a breeding barn these days - a mare by Street Cry (Machiavellian).

“I think it’s just that Street Cry as a broodmare sire matches with anything,” Pulford says of Darley’s former shuttler.

“Street Cry as a broodmare sire is just absolutely phenomenal, and his influence just keeps growing and growing. He just improves any stallion his daughters are put to, and brings the best out of anything.

“Circular is just yet another Street Cry mare who’s producing at the top level.”

Street Cry’s influence is growing immense, especially considering Winx’s dad died aged just 16 and after only nine Australian crops.

He’s the leading broodmare sire of Group 1 winners this Australian season with five, two more than Exceed And Excel (Danehill), thanks to Beiwacht (Bivouac), Attica (Lonhro), Tom Kitten (Harry Angel), Treasurethe Moment (Alabama Express) and Saturday’s Queen Of The Turf Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) queen Idle Flyer (Dundeel).

Street Cry sits fifth by earnings on this season’s Australian broodmare sire table. That’s two spots below his best finishing position on that table - recorded after another star grandson Romantic Warrior (Acclamation) won the Cox Plate (Gr 1, 2040m) in 2023 - but Street Cry currently sits equal-first by stakes winners (11), along with Fastnet Rock (Danehill) and Exceed And Excel, and with the latter shares the most stakes wins (17).

And all this comes with Street Cry having only 283 runners on that table. Fastnet Rock has 604 and Exceed And Excel 468, while the other two above Street Cry on the earnings chart are Redoute’s Choice (Danehill) with 581 starters, and Snitzel (Redoute’s Choice) with 527.

Overall, Street Cry as a broodmare sire has 197 stakes winners from 2996 runners, at a healthy SWTR ratio of 6.57 per cent.

He’s also firing as a paternal grandfather. His most prominent sire son Street Boss sits at a career-best fifth on the Australian general sires’ table this season, the Darley sire’s star performers being elite victors Tempted, Tentyris, Pericles and recent Australian Derby (Gr 1, 2400m) hero Green Spaces.

One spot below him is another Street Cry in Per Incanto, while a third - Pride Of Dubai - finished third last season thanks to Pride Of Jenni, Bella Nipotina and Dubai Honour.

For her part, Circular - who’s now in-foal to Too Darn Hot (Dubawi) - is described as a fairly typical Street Cry mare, one of average size with plenty of depth and substance, who you could imagine fitting with most stallions.

“She’s got good bone, and is a lovely, strong, balanced mare,” Pulford says.

“She was good on the racetrack, but she wasn’t elite. She won $285,000, which is decent. But she was a good Group 3 or Saturday metro-class mare, and probably the difference in ability between those and the really topline mares isn’t big enough to make a difference at stud.

“Any mare that can win at Sydney level on a Saturday, at that high Benchmark level of 84 and above, or gets to stakes class, is definitely worth breeding from, because they often get a really good horse.”

And in turn, Street Cry is proving a highly successful nick for Brazen Beau. With three stakes winners from nine runners, at 22 per cent, it’s his strongest with more than four runners.

If Street Cry’s success is being shouted out loud, Brazen Beau, by contrast, has been quietly doing his thing, and doing it well.

He’s not the first horse most would come up with when thinking of Darley stallions, reflected in the fact he covered only 42 mares at Darley’s Northwood Park, Victoria, last season at $27,500 (inc GST).

Perhaps that stems from the fact he’s had just three Group 1 winners from 11 crops - in one-timers Another Prophet, On The Bubbles and Zapateo - and because his fertility percentages have at times dipped into the 60s.

Yet his numbers on the track paint a far more rosy picture, particularly this season, and especially right now.

Brazen Beau has had five stakes winners in seven weeks, and two stakes runners-up.

Cinsault took Rosehill’s Millie Fox Stakes (Gr 2, 1300m) on the same day that Power Beau won Adelaide’s City Of Marion Stakes (Listed, 1200m). Two weeks later two-year-old filly Medicinal won Flemington’s Ottawa Stakes (Gr 3, 1000m), before another double came last Saturday through Diameter and three-year-old filly Mating Call, who won the SAJC Auraria Stakes (Gr 3, 1800m).

That recent quintet has helped the dual Group 1-winning Brazen Beau match his best season for stakes winners, with the five recorded in his second campaign of runners in 2019-20.

The 14-year-old has 32 black type victors worldwide at a healthy 5.24 per cent of runners, considerably above the widely held pass mark of around four per cent. In Australia, he has 22 at 6.11 per cent.

“There’s very few stallions going better than Brazen Beau at the moment,” says Pulford.

“He doesn’t have huge numbers - he never has; that’s just the horse. But he gets a stakes winner or more with every crop, and he’s had two two-year-old stakes winners for us this season. That’s the sort of thing Street Boss does for us.

“He’s definitely under the radar. Statistically, he’s still the best son of I Am Invincible at stud, with numbers running. Home Affairs is doing great things with his first crop obviously, but with three-year-olds or older, Brazen Beau is the best.

“Other than one quiet season, he’s always had a good two-year-old crop, and he’s the sort of stallion that gets mares up and going.

“And his stock do train on as well. Zapateo was at her best as a later mare. He’s always got a couple of good ones running around, and he’ll continue to do so.

“Plus at 6.1 per cent stakes winners to runners - that compares favourably to plenty of stallions who stand for a lot more. At his fee of $25,000, he’s exceptional.”

Meanwhile, Diameter is rated a $23 chance for the Champagne Stakes. As the only entrant who’s won over the distance, he could be over the odds.

The colt’s pedigree does have a few things going for it aside from the presence of a Street Cry mare.

One is Sir Ivor (Sir Gaylord) at 6f x 6m, and in strong places. Brazen Beau’s third sire Green Desert (Danzig) has Sir Ivor as his damsire, while down below the American-bred stallion is the third sire of Octagonal, Circular’s damsire.

Another influential US stallion, Never Bend (Nasrullah) is at 7f x 6m, 7m in useful places - respectively feeding into the dams of Green Desert, Street Cry and Straight Strike (Mr. Prospector), who’s Circular’s third damsire. This of course brings a presence in both sides of Never Bend’s blue hen dam Lalun (Djeddah).

The most present mare is Nogara (Havresac), with 12 spots from columns seven to nine, while another Italian - Nearco (Pharos) - heads the stallions’ roster with 18 appearances.
