Just days after being announced as the latest recruit to Yulong Stud’s NSW roster, Private Harry (Harry Angel) will get down to the business of building his first book in the Victory Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) at Eagle Farm this afternoon.

Private Harry resumes after a spell at Camden and a stable transfer to Chris Waller but hasn’t missed a beat according to Darren Beadman.

“He’s a colt but isn’t heavily-built and has blended into the Rosehill environment really well with all the quality horses in the yard,” Beadman said.

What's On

“He’s suited to Chris and his style of training and has got plenty to offer. He’s fit and healthy so it’s full steam ahead. He was full of himself before his first trial at Warwick Farm a month ago but trimmed up nicely to win a Canterbury trial three weeks ago.”

He clocked 53.35s for 900 metres under James McDonald and Waller sent him back to Canterbury for a 1000-metre exhibition gallop under regular jockey Ash Morgan last week.

Private Harry moved from Newcastle to Sydney not long after Beadman arrived as Waller’s right-hand man at Rosehill. The champion jockey of his day had been an integral member of the Godolphin team for over a decade at Randwick.

The unbeaten colt was transferred after Yulong owner Zheng Yuesheng outbid some Hunter Valley heavyweights to buy a 50 per cent share from Kurrinda Bloodstock in a deal believed to value the colt at $16 million.

Private Harry had hit the ground running as a spring three-year-old, winning at Newcastle, Hawkesbury and Rosehill before another on-pace victory in the $3 million Magic Millions Sunlight Plate (1100m) in Queensland.

He defeated Golden Slipper Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) winner Lady Of Camelot (Written Tycoon) in the Gold Coast slot race and then raised the bar to the elite level while maintaining his unbeaten record in last year’s The Galaxy (Gr 1, 1100m) at Rosehill.

He stopped the clock in a sizzling 62.67s, which was only a tick outside the long-standing course record (62.51s) set by Westicaro (Westbridge) in 2007.

A lacklustre prep last spring was limited to losses in The Shorts (Gr 2, 1100m) and ATC Premiere Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) before a vet exam revealed bone bruising in his near-foreleg. It also meant an immediate withdrawal from the $20 million The Everest (Gr 1, 1200m).

Private Harry’s progress this prep indicates he’s over that setback and he goes into the Victory Stakes with dynamic first-up form highlighted in last year’s The Galaxy. He will also have a large ownership group converging on South East Queensland led by Kurrinda Bloodstock manager Sean Driver.

“There are 20 in the syndicate and we bought him at the 2023 Inglis Classic Yearling Sale,” Driver recalled this week.

“Harry Angel was a first-season sire here and we were a bit cautious but went ahead and got him for $115,000.”

The owners are on a good thing with Private Harry’s bank account about to start ticking over again from $2.05 million, and their slice of the 50 per cent sale to Yulong was a windfall from the racing gods.

“Most of them are in his three-year-old half-brother Lance Corporal who won a Newcastle trial last month,” Driver added.

“His half-sister Lady Lieutenant is a two-year-old now and we’re giving her time. She’s correct, sound and coming along nicely.”

They’re both with Nathan Doyle, who trained Private Harry prior to the move down from Newcastle, and his yearling half-brother by Zousain (Zoustar) was purchased for $300,000 by Archibald Racing at the 2026 Inglis Classic Yearling Sale.

Private Harry was bred by Rheinwood Pastoral owner Ray Willis in the NSW Southern Highlands at Mittagong.

“He’s our first Group 1 winner and we think he’s a champion,’’ Willis said after The Galaxy.

“It’s a very special moment to breed a Group 1 winner, especially a colt like him who could be anything.”

Ray’s daughter Kirsty Willis reports his dam Happy Pilgrim (Congrats) and Private Harry’s older half-sister Lucky Lily (Santos) are both back in foal off early covers to Harry Angel (Dark Angel).

Happy Pilgrim is one of 13 winners from Pilgrim (Danehill), who was a half-sister to STC Ranvet Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m) winner Arkady (Myocard) and to the dam of AJC Challenge Stakes (Gr 2, 1000m) winner Olonana (More Than Ready).

Private Harry will be the first Group 1-winning son of World Champion Sprinter Harry Angel to stand in Australia.

“Breeders will gravitate towards his blend of speed and substance,” Yulong’s chief operating officer Sam Fairgray said.

“He’s a strong, masculine, good-looking colt with some of the fastest sectionals we’ve seen in recent years.”

Harry Angel was the top-rated sprinter on the World Thoroughbred Rankings in 2017 as a top-tier winning sprinter of Haydock’s Sprint Cup (Gr 1, 6f) and Newmarket’s July Cup (Gr 1, 6f). His service fee at Darley has risen from $16,500 when Private Harry was conceived to $88,000 (inc GST) this year.

Meanwhile, Private Harry floated into Queensland on Thursday morning ahead of the Victory Stakes and, as always, the trainer had the final word.

“He’s been going extra well at the trials and Ash was very happy with his gallop last week,” Waller said on Friday morning.

“Private Harry will tell where he’s at first-up, how he’s feeling and where we are heading from here. Hopefully, it’s the Group 1 Doomben 10,000 in two weeks.”

Morning Briefing

Australia

Second for Pinatubo

Global Goal (Credit: Inglis)

Darley shuttler Pinatubo (Shamardal) welcomed his second southern hemisphere-bred winner and first in Australia when his promising filly Global Goal (2 f ex Tides by Fastnet Rock) made an immediate impression with a dominant debut victory in the $200,000 Inglis Challenge (1200m) at Wagga on Friday. Trained by John Sargent, the two-year-old settled in the second half of the field under Dylan Gibbons before unleashing a powerful late surge to defeat Friendly Fire (Farnan) by 1.3 lengths with Portland Miss (Portland Sky) another 1.5 lengths away in third. A $250,000 Inglis Easter purchase for Jonathan Munz, Global Goal was offered by Arrowfield Stud and is the third winner from three foals to race out of Fastnet Rock (Danehill) mare Tides, a sister to Group 1 winner Shoals and the Group 1-placed Groundswell. Sargent has long held Global Goal in high regard and indicated a stakes campaign lies ahead. “I really liked the way she got home – that’s the sign of an above-average two-year-old,” he said. Global Goal will now be spelled before a spring return, with the Flight Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) flagged as a target. Sargent enjoyed a feature double on the card, with Cosmic Avenger (Cosmic Force) producing a strong finishing burst to claim the MTC Guineas (1600m). Pinatubo will command a fee of $27,500 (inc GST) at Kelvinside this spring.

Four for Wild Ruler

Newgate Farm’s first-season sire Wild Ruler (Snitzel) added a fourth juvenile winner to his tally when promising colt Priory Park (2 c ex Incredulous Dream by Press Statement) produced a strong performance to land Friday’s 1000-metre contest at Muswellbrook. Prepared by Annabel and Rob Archibald, Priory Park stepped up on a solid debut fourth at Hawkesbury – a race that has already produced subsequent winners – to defeat the well-fancied Too Darn Hot (Dubawi) colt Dr Hook in a decisive finish. The pair cleared out from their rivals, with Priory Park asserting late under Mitchell Bell to score by 0.6 lengths, stopping the clock at 56.86 seconds. A $220,000 Magic Millions Gold Coast purchase from Riverstone Lodge, Priory Park is the first foal out of the stakes-winning Press Statement (Hinchinbrook) mare Incredulous Dream, herself a half-sister to Group 2 winner Global Exchange (Dundeel). Wild Ruler’s early runners continue to make an impression, the cohort headed by Silver Slipper Stakes (Gr 2, 1100m) winner Stretan Ruler and the stakes-placed Savage Look. The son of Snitzel (Redoute’s Choice) has seven lots representing him at the upcoming Inglis Australian Weanling Sale, beginning May 5. He will stand at Newgate for $27,500 (inc GST) in 2026.

Bianco Vilana makes it back-to-back stakes wins in Wagga Gold Cup

Bianco Vilano (7 g Foxwedge - Cap Bianco by Falvelon) delivered a career-defining performance to complete the Albury Cup (Listed, 2000m)-Wagga Wagga Gold Cup (Listed, 2000m) double on Friday, becoming just the fourth horse to achieve the feat. Trained by Ron Stubbs, the $12 chance, who landed the Albury Cup last start in March, surged clear in the straight under Jason Lyon to score by a length from Villasaurus (Villermont), with defending champion Flying Bandit (Trapeze Artist) close up in third. The win capped a long-held ambition for Stubbs, who had previously claimed most of the region’s major races. "This is a huge thrill,'' the trainer told Sky Thoroughbred Central. "To be able to win both of them [Albury Cup, Wagga Wagga Gold Cup] is amazing. He has gone to another level. It was unfortunate Tyler [Schiller] could not be here today but I'm pleased for Jason. He does a lot of work for our stable, he is our stable jockey.'' Lyon said it "didn't go to plan early" for Bianco Vilano. "But when we came out on the corner, I was pretty confident,'' the winning rider said. "We hit the front a bit early but he was just too good. He’s very versatile as he's won from 1175 metres and now twice at 2000 metres.'' The victory also secured Bianco Vilano a berth in the $3 million Big Dance (1600m) at Randwick in November.

O’Brien shoots for Derby success with Cannae

Cannae (Credit: Racing Photos)

Trainer Danny O’Brien will attempt to tick off a personal milestone when Cannae (Maurice) lines up in Saturday’s South Australian Derby (Gr 1, 2500m) at Morphettville. Despite 23 elite-level winners as a trainer, O’Brien is yet to claim a Group 1 outright as an owner, with the Maurice (Screen Hero) gelding raced solely by himself and wife Nina. “I’ve had shares in Group 1 winners, but I’ve not won one on my own,” O’Brien said. “It’s a box I’d like to tick.” Cannae will be having just his fifth start, mirroring the path of O’Brien’s 2020 Derby winner Russian Camelot (Camelot), and has progressed steadily this preparation following a maiden win at Caulfield Heath. The lightly raced three-year-old has since placed in both the Morphettville Guineas (Listed, 1600m) and Port Adelaide Guineas (Listed, 1800m), and O’Brien is confident the step up in trip will suit. “We always thought he would stay and he’s had a nice preparation to get to this distance,” he said. A $20,000 Magic Millions Adelaide purchase, Cannae has attracted international interest but remains in O’Brien’s care, with the trainer content to press on toward Saturday’s Classic, where he is a $26 outsider.

Karinska chasing Guineas redemption

Karinska (Spirit Of Boom) will get another chance to secure a deserved stakes breakthrough when she lines up in Saturday’s Hawkesbury Guineas (Gr 3, 1400m). The Chris Waller-trained filly was denied a clear run in the James H B Carr Stakes (Gr 3, 1400m) at Randwick when checked at a crucial stage, before recovering to finish third behind Snitzel Dancer (Snitzel). Assistant trainer Charlie Duckworth was left in no doubt as to the cost of that interference. “If she gets her run, she wins,” he said. “She’s barging the door down to win one of these.” Karinska has been competitive in stronger company throughout her three-year-old season, including a Group 1 placing in the Flight Stakes, and drops in grade for Saturday’s assignment. With James McDonald unavailable, Tommy Berry takes the ride and is confident the filly is well placed to strike. “She’s got a great racing pattern and can put herself just behind the speed,” Berry said. “This is a step back from what she’s been racing against.” Karinska will be aiming to become the first filly to win the race since Shazee Lee (Ready's Image) in 2017.

Smith hoping Way To The Stars can shine in Gold Rush

Well-travelled sprinter Way To The Stars (Reward For Effort) will return to New South Wales for the first time in over a year when he lines up in Saturday’s Hawkesbury Gold Rush (Listed, 1100m), with trainer Matt Smith expecting a bold showing. A dual Listed winner, the gelding has been plagued by circumstances in recent starts, drawing wide in the Oakleigh Plate (Gr 1, 1100m) before failing to handle wet ground at Flemington. Smith believes conditions will be more suitable this weekend, with a good track and favourable draw in barrier three key factors. “I think he’s back to his best,” Smith said. “He’s a horse that needs to get his first 400 right, and if he does that, he can be competitive.” The seven-year-old has been kept fresh with a trial between runs, while Nash Rawiller takes the ride in what shapes as an open contest. Stablemate World Alliance (Rubick) is on the cusp of gaining a start and would add further depth to the stable’s chances if he makes the field, boasting a strong fresh record and a liking for the course and distance.

Irish import Zahrann kicks off at Bendigo

Ciaron Maher’s imported gelding Zahrann (Night Of Thunder) will make his Australian debut in Saturday’s Golden Mile (Listed, 1600m) at Bendigo, with connections already eyeing a spring campaign. The Irish-bred entire brings solid European form and will be having his seventh start, though the mile trip may prove on the sharp side. “In a perfect world he’ll want further,” assistant trainer Jack Turnbull said. “But if we can capture a bit of what he showed in Europe and build from that, it will be a good starting point.” Zahrann has had two jump-outs in preparation and arrives off a patient build-up after early foot issues following his arrival in Australia. “He had a few small hiccups, but we’ve taken our time and we’re on top of that now,” Turnbull said. Purchased with races like the Caulfield Cup (Gr 1, 2400m) in mind, Zahrann is expected to settle midfield before finishing off, with Saturday’s run shaping as a guide to his immediate path. Options include a Brisbane campaign or a quieter lead-in to the spring. Stablemate Holymanz (Almanzor) will also contest the race and profiles as a strong chance, having finished fifth at Flemington last start before pleasing in a recent jump-out. “He’s fresh, consistent and the mile suits him,” Turnbull said. “If he gets the right run, he’s good enough.”

Craig Williams booked for Rothfire ride

Rothfire (Credit: Racing Photos)

Champion jockey Craig Williams will return to Rockhampton for a second crack at The Archer (1300m) on Sunday, partnering high-profile sprinter Rothfire (Rothesay) for trainer Robert Heathcote. Williams finished runner-up in last year’s $1 million feature aboard Comrade Rosa (Capitalist) and is keen to go one better when he reunites with the “Thriller from Chinchilla”. “I ran second in the race last year and I’d love to win it this time,” Williams said. Eight-year-old Rothfire enters the race as one of the highest-rated runners in the field, sharing top billing with Group 1 winner Here To Shock (Shocking) and sitting just ahead of Stradbroke Handicap (Gr 1, 1400m) placegetter Yellow Brick (The Mission) in the ratings. Williams partnered Rothfire in last year’s Stradbroke and believes the gelding is well placed under the set weights and penalties conditions, carrying 57.5 kilograms. “He’s one of the best weighted horses in the race and the best rated, but it’s a strong field,” he said. “I’m looking forward to the challenge.” Early markets have Rothfire on the third line of betting at $6, with Yellow Brick heading the market at $4.

First-season sires fire as juveniles impress at Canterbury trials

A strong set of juvenile heats at Canterbury on Friday saw the progeny of several first-season sires all making favourable impressions.

Heat 14 produced the first public look at Stay Inside (Extreme Choice) colt Concubine Visit for Bjorn Baker, and the youngster showed sharp early speed to lead under Josh Parr before holding his ground strongly despite racing greenly, scoring by 1.4 lengths from Qayed (Wootton Bassett).

Out of the Group 3-placed mare Highly Discreet (Street Boss), he hails from the well-established “Discreet” family and, having been passed in at Magic Millions, now races in the colours of his breeder, Go Bloodstock.

Baker was also represented in Heat 15 by the more experienced Malua Bay (Pierro) who resumed for his second preparation with another polished display. Settling off the speed, he finished over the top of his rivals to win, building on two solid trials earlier in the year.

Malua Bay has changed hands three times, culminating in a $270,000 purchase at the 2025 NZB Ready To Run Sale by Darby Racing.

One of the more striking performances of the morning came in Heat 17, where Portland Sky (Deep Field) gelding Skystone led throughout under Zac Lloyd to score by 1.2 lengths.

Prepared by Tom Charlton, the Laurel Oak-bred juvenile is out of Rockarosa (Pierro) from the family of dual Group 1 winner Gallica (Redoute's Choice). Skystone’s effort continued a promising trend for Portland Sky, who now has nine unraced juveniles to have won or placed in trials.

Runner-up Attorney General (Snitzel) also caught the eye. The $1.5 million Inglis Easter purchase for Tom Magnier was having his fifth trial and first this preparation.

Tiger Of Malay (Extreme Choice) filly Tigroni added further depth to the session with a stylish win in Heat 18. Already well tested against quality opposition – including Group 1 winner Fireball (Snitzel) – she returned from a spell with a performance that hinted at black-type ambitions for the Tom Charlton stable.

A Magic Millions graduate, Tigroni is bred on a pedigree that includes Group 1 winner Pernod (Centaine) and shapes as one of the more progressive types among her sire’s early runners.

Melham receives ten-meeting ban

Leading rider Jamie Melham will spend time on the sidelines in May after being handed a ten-meeting suspension for careless riding at Ballarat on Thursday. The ban, incurred aboard two-year-old filly Cavill Avenue (Farnan), will commence following next week’s Group 1 meeting at Morphettville on May 10, allowing Melham to return to riding on May 19. Stewards found Melham guilty after she pleaded to attempting a run near the 400 metres when there was insufficient room, resulting in interference to Adakite (Pierro), who became unbalanced. It marks her first careless riding suspension since a 30-day ban late last year following an inquiry into Blake Shinn’s Melbourne Cup Day fall. Despite the looming suspension, Melham is set to be a key figure at Saturday’s SA Derby meeting, where she has seven rides, including aboard $26 chance Arabian Prince (Ghaiyyath) in the feature. She will also be free to partner Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) hero Half Yours (St Jean) in the Hollindale Stakes (Gr 2, 1800m) at the Gold Coast on May 9 before beginning her time out.

Hall fined $4,000 by stewards

Racing Victoria (RV) stewards have fined trainer Vincent Hall $4,000 after a prohibited substance was detected in a post-race sample taken from Harmonett (Epaulette) following her win at Sandown-Hillside in January. The inquiry centred on the presence of Fexofenadine in a urine sample collected after the mare’s victory in the Brad Masters Plumbing Handicap (1000m) on January 21. The substance, an antihistamine used in humans, is not registered for use in horses and is classified under Prohibited List B of the Australian Rules of Racing. Hall pleaded not guilty to a charge under AR240(2), which relates to presenting a horse to race with a prohibited substance in its system, but stewards returned a guilty verdict. In determining a penalty, stewards took into account Hall’s not guilty plea, his co-operation throughout the investigation, his prior clean record, and his personal and professional circumstances, along with the need for both specific and general deterrence. Harmonett has been disqualified from the race under AR240(1), with placings amended accordingly.

Te Akau trio to dominate Champagne Stakes

Trainers Mark Walker and Sam Bergerson will saddle three leading chances in Saturday’s Champagne Stakes (Listed, 1200m) at Riccarton, with southern performers Enchantment (Hello Youmzain) and Never Too Much (Rubick) joined by well-related debutant Zafar (Snitzel). The stable had the quinella in the Welcome Stakes (Listed, 1000m) last month, with Enchantment edging out Never Too Much, and assistant trainer Hunter Durrant expects both juveniles to play a major role again. “Enchantment was great when picking up the stakes win last start and she has come through it really well,” Durrant said. “The 1200 metres is probably a bit of a stretch, but I can’t fault her. Never Too Much looks the real improver stepping up to 1200 metres. There’s a nice sense of timing for him.” Zafar adds intrigue to the race, with the colt arriving from Te Akau’s Matamata base after impressing at the trials. “He got off the truck looking in great order and has settled in really well,” Durrant said. “If he can bring his trial form to raceday, he will be hard to beat.” Te Akau also holds strong claims across the card, with Stonybreck (Tavistock) set to contest the Easter Cup (1600m) following a luckless fourth in the Southern Alps Challenge, while last-start winner Insatiable (All Too Hard) is expected to measure up again in the Open Sprint (1200m).

Unleash The Beast eyes hat-trick before NZ Cup bid

Rangiora trainer Kenny Moore will chase a third straight win with progressive stayer Unleash The Beast (Eminent) in Saturday’s Founders Cup (2600m) at Riccarton, with confidence high following back-to-back victories. The four-year-old struck form with a Rating 65 (2200m) success at Ashburton before stepping up to dominate over an extended trip in Rating 75 (2600m) grade at Riccarton last week, winning by three lengths. Moore believes the gelding has taken time to furnish but is now developing into a genuine staying prospect, with the New Zealand Cup (Gr 3, 3200m) pencilled in as a spring target. “He has just trained on so well from last week, you wouldn’t have thought he had had a race,” Moore said. “He’s just becoming a professional racehorse now.” Unleash The Beast is expected to have his final run of the campaign on Saturday before heading for a winter break, with Moore opting against racing on the polytrack. “It’s basically the same field as last week with a couple of extras in, so I think we’ll be very competitive,” he added.

Gray makes long-awaited return to Riccarton

Palmerston North trainer Stephen Gray will make his first trip to Riccarton in more than two decades this weekend, hoping a pair of runners can deliver a winning return. The former Singapore-based horseman, now training in partnership with his father Kevin, will be led by Anderson Bridge (Savabeel) in the Easter Cup. The son of Savabeel (Zabeel) has won three of five starts since returning from Australia but was below expectations when midfield in the Awapuni Gold Cup (Gr 2, 2100m) at Trentham. Gray has since freshened the five-year-old and elected to drop him back to a mile for what is expected to be his final run of the campaign. “He didn’t get the track last start and we’ve come back to a mile,” Gray said. “He’s done a good job and we’ll give him this before a break.” Stablemate Toronto (Vancouver) will back up after a narrow second over 1000 metres at Riccarton last weekend, with Gray confident the gelding can go one better. “Another 50 metres and he probably wins,” he said. “He’s thriving down here and should run well again.” Closer to home, Gray will also take a team to Tauherenikau on Sunday, including debutants Karryn (Derryn) and Molly’s Belt (Super Seth), while he holds high hopes for So We Go (Embellish), who he believes can make an impact before being set for a four-year-old campaign.

Gussey eyes double as Joshua Brown resumes

Cambridge trainer Lance Gussey will look to carry momentum into Te Rapa on Saturday after a boilover at Pukekohe, with stakes winner Joshua Brown (Dalghar) set to resume in the Jones Trucking 1200 (1200m). Outsider Allaces (Ace High) defied 50-1 odds to break her maiden in Friday’s Show By SkyCity 1600 (1600m), relishing a change of tactics under Lynsey Satherley to settle just off the speed before finishing strongly to score by 1.3 lengths. Gussey said the mare had shown ability at home but had been held back by inexperience. “She wasn’t fast enough to join the pack and I think she was a little bit scared too,” he said. “We tried something different and it worked.” The victory could open winter options for Allaces, including heavy tracks and the polytrack, both of which she has handled in training. Attention now turns to Joshua Brown, who resumes as a $19 outsider but has pleased Gussey in the lead-up. “I’m pretty stoked with the way he has come up, I’m quietly confident,” he said. “He’s been training the best he ever has.” The gelding thrives in testing conditions, highlighted by his Opunake Cup (Listed, 1400m) victory on a Heavy 10 track last July, and Gussey is hopeful of returning to defend that title later in the campaign.

177 for Frankel

Frankel (Credit: Juddmonte)

Juddmonte’s breed-shaping stallion Frankel (Galileo) chalked up his 177th individual stakes winner when Ancient Egypt (3 c ex Atone by Oasis Dream) gained a determined success in Friday’s Newmarket Stakes (Listed, 1m 2f) at Newmarket. Ridden by Rowan Scott for trainer Charlie Johnston, the three-year-old colt took his career record to three wins from just four starts as he knuckled down to turn away the persistent challenge of My Love Is King (Kingman) by two lengths. There was a further length and a quarter back to Archers Bay (Wootton Bassett) in third. Purchased by his owners Amo Racing for 1.1 million guineas during Book 1 of the 2024 Tattersalls Yearling Sale, Ancient Egypt is a brother to winner Senita and a half-brother to Group-placed winner Redressed (Le Havre) being out of the winning Oasis Dream (Green Desert) mare Atone, herself a sister to multiple elite-level winner Midday. Frankel is standing at Banstead Manor Stud for a fee of £350,000 (approx. AU$662,030).

UK: Drop back in trip no problem for Santorini Star

Dropping back to a mile and a half for the first time since May last year proved no barrier to the William Haggas-trained Santorini Star (5 m Golden Horn - Livia’s Dream by Teofilo) as the mare dug deep to land Friday’s Jockey Club Stakes (Gr 2, 1m 4f) at Newmarket. Ridden by Tom Marquand, the daughter of Golden Horn (Cape Cross) registered her second Group 2 success as she defeated the front-running Eydon (Olden Times) by a length and a quarter. There was a further half-length back to French Master (Frankel) in third place.

71 for Camelot

Tattycoram (4 f ex Illaunmore by Shamardal) provided Coolmore stallion Camelot (Montjeu) with his 71st individual stakes winner on Friday when taking out the Daisy Warwick Fillies’ Stakes (Listed, 1m 4f) at Goodwood. Ridden by Edward Greatrex for trainer Ralph Beckett, the four-year-old filly quickened clear entering the final furlong and found plenty to beat Coedana (King Of Change) by a length and a quarter with a head back to Incensed (Ulysses) in third. Bred and raced by Chasemore Farm, Tattycoram is half-sister to the Group-placed winner Johannes Brahms (Siyouni) being out of the Listed-placed winning Shamardal (Giant’s Causeway) mare Illaunmore. Camelot is standing at Coolmore Stud for a fee of €60,000 (approx. AU$97,840).

UK: Coppull lays down Ascot claims in Commonwealth Cup Trial

Last year’s Richmond Stakes (Gr 2, 6f) winner Coppull (3 c Bated Breath - Springwood Drive by Mayson) laid down a marker for next month’s Commonwealth Cup (Gr 1, 6f) at Royal Ascot when making a winning return to action in Friday’s Commonwealth Cup Trial Stakes (Gr 3, 6f) at the track. Ridden by Rossa Ryan for trainer Clive Cox, the son of Bated Breath (Dansili) kept on well down the centre of the track to deny late finishers Midnight Tango (Night Of Thunder) and Division (Kingman) by a neck and a half-length respectively. Having been readily available at odds of 33-1 before the race, Coppull was shortened into a best-priced 16-1 following his first-up victory.

UK: Jonquil bounces back to form in Paradise Stakes

Group 2 scorer Jonquil (4 c Lope De Vega - Jovial by Dubawi) returned to winning form when taking out Friday’s Paradise Stakes (Listed, 1m) at Ascot. Ridden by Colin Keane for trainer Andrew Balding, the four-year-old colt came home strongly inside the final furlong to beat Holloway Boy (Ulysses) by a length and a quarter. There was a further neck back to Remmooz (Blue Point) in third. The win marked a bounce back from a disappointing midfield effort in February’s Abu Dhabi Gold Cup (Listed, 1600m).

UK: Sweet William makes winning return in Sagaro Stakes

The John and Thady Gosden-trained Sweet William (7 g Sea The Stars - Gale Force by Shirocco) made a winning return to action on Friday when battling well to land the Sagaro Stakes (Gr 3, 2m) at Ascot. Having finished third in the contest on his return last year, the now seven-year-old gelding, who had produced career-best form last season, found plenty inside the closing stages to deny fitter rival Caballo De Mar (Phoenix Of Spain) by a short-head. The pair pulled a further eight lengths clear of the third-placed Miss Alpilles (Sea The Stars).

FR: Sunly adds second Group 3 to advancing record

Having ended her debut season with three wins from four starts, the Francis Graffard-trained Sunly (4 f Night Of Thunder - Suffused by Champs Elysees) made a winning return to action on Friday when readily scoring in the Prix Allez France (Gr 3, 2000m) at Saint-Cloud. Ridden by Christophe Soumillon, the four-year-old filly came from the rear of the field to lead inside the final furlong and pull xx clear of runner-up Tajlina (Kingman). There was a further xx back to Light The Ghost (Waldgeist) in third. The win was Sunly’s third at stakes level and second at Group level.

FR: No Lunch continues winning run in Prix du Muguet

The Christophe Ferland-trained No Lunch (5 h Dubawi - Lunch Lady by Shamardal) extended his winning streak to six on Friday when landing the biggest success of his career in the Prix du Muguet (Gr 2, 1600m) at Saint-Cloud. Ridden by Maxime Guyon, the five-year-old entire swooped late in the race to deny British raider Seagulls Eleven (Galileo Gold) by a neck. There was a further length and a quarter back to Next Mine (Dabirism) in third. The win marked No Lunch’s fourth at stakes level, but first in Group company.

GER: Gostam remains unbeaten in Bavarian Classic

Having gone three starts unbeaten as a juvenile, the Andreas Wohler-trained Gostam (3 c Saxon Warrior - Goiana by Oasis Dream) continued that winning run on his three-year-old return when taking out Friday’s Bavarian Classic (Gr 2, 2000m) at Munich. Ridden by Eduardo Pedroza, the son of Saxon Warrior (Deep Impact) defeated Lommi (Churchill) by a neck with a further three-quarters of a length back to Peace Of Japan (Japan) in third place.

UK: Precise heads a field of 19 in English 1,000 Guineas

Aidan O'Brien will have two runners in Sunday's English 1,000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1m), including market leader Precise (Starspangledbanner). The Fillies' Mile (Gr 1, 1m) winner from last season will take on 18 rivals including stablemate True Love (No Nay Never) – who won last year's Cheveley Park Stakes (Gr 1, 6f) and made a winning return last month. Ryan Moore rides Precise for the first time in her career, while Wayne Lordan is back on board True Love. Karl Burke's Royal Ascot heroine Venetian Sun (Starman) will also have a stablemate join her in the shape of recent French Group 3 scorer Evolutionist (Night Of Thunder). Godolphin have two runners in the Classic in My Highness (Ghaiyyath) and Abashiri (Frankel).

UK: Minzaal colt tops Tattersalls Guineas Sale

The Tattersalls Guineas Breeze Up and Horses in Training Sale concluded on Thursday with a colt by Minzaal (Mehmas) selling for 240,000gns (approx. AU$476,870), equaling the highest price achieved at the sale since 2016. The son of first-crop sire Minzaal is out of the Group 3 winner Distinctive (Tobougg) and was sold by Eddie Linehan's Lackendarra to Georgia King, who said: “It’s for a new partnership between Rebel Racing’s Phil Cunningham and Tim Gredley, with Richard Spencer the trainer. We’re delighted to get him and the aim is to hopefully have him run at Royal Ascot. Richard and I came this morning to look at him and then Richard was away at Kempton, so I was left to do this. He’s the first horse I’ve ever bought, so it was quite nerve-wracking! I recently started working with Rebel Racing and it’s a great yard.” A total of 117 horses sold in the Breeze-Up section of the sale for 3,832,000gns (approx. AU$7.61 million). The average of 32,752gns (approx. AU$65,080) dipped 17 per cent from 2025 and the median of 20,000gns (approx. AU$39,740) was down 33 per cent year-on-year. The clearance rate was down to 75 per cent from 82. Meanwhile, 97 lots changed hands for an aggregate of 1,324,500gns (approx. AU$2.63 million) during the Horses in Training Sale, an eight per cent decline year-on-year. The average dropped 18 per cent to 13,655gns (approx. AU$27,130), while the median fell 2.8 per cent to 8,750gns (approx. AU$17,390).

Edmonds set to shoot for the stars with Extragalactic

Extragalactic (Credit: Racing Photos)

After some out of this world performances by Extragalactic (Deep Field), Trent Edmonds is hopeful his banner filly can give his solo training career lift-off as he ponders whether to throw the daughter of Deep Field (Northern Meteor) in at the deep end in The Goodwood (Gr 1, 1200m) on Saturday week.

Extragalactic peeled off the fastest closing sectionals of the Morphettville meeting last Saturday when registering the first stakes placing of her nascent career in the Tobin Bronze Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m); and in light of how swiftly the three-year-old has recovered from her exertions Edmonds is leaning towards elevating his sights to Group 1 grade with the first horse he bought after branching out on his own.

Her runner-up finish gave the filly ballot exemption into South Australia’s premier sprint race, and judging by the recent record of Tobin Bronze winners subsequently running in The Goodwood - Reserve Bank (Capitalist) and Royal Merchant (Merchant Navy) did the double in 2025 and 2023 respectively - Extragalactic would certainly not be out of her depth.

Edmonds will leave the decision to the 11th hour, with the Pakenham-based horseman prepared to send his prized asset to the paddock should she show any sign of having come to the end of her prep; but if the filly continues to thrive and show her customary appetite for her work, he will happily roll the dice.

“She’s been perfect and hasn’t left an oat in her feed bin since the run,” Edmonds told ANZ News.

“She travelled back to Pakenham in great order and has been very fresh since she got back, so I really can’t fault her. It was her first trip away so you’re always a little bit concerned with how they’re going to handle it, but she’s got a lovely temperament and she took everything in her stride.

“It was obviously a massive run in the Tobin Bronze, we gave away a huge lead at the top of the straight so she did an amazing job to finish less than a length behind a smart colt [Tycoon Star]. The wide barrier played a big part so I would be pretty confident that if she’d drawn in and got a softer run, the result may well have been different.

“But a top-three finish gets her into The Goodwood, so we’ll have to take a serious look at running her in the race. We nominated her on Monday morning and given how well she’s come through her run on Saturday, it’s definitely in the front of my mind now. We don’t have to make a decision right away but it’s either run her in The Goodwood or send her for a spell, and at this stage she’s shown me no indication that she needs a break.”

While Edmonds readily concedes his progress has been steady rather than spectacular since making the move from his native Queensland in early 2024, to saddle up a Group 1 runner just two years into his new venture would certainly represent a sudden spike on his growth chart.

Before relocating his young family to the chillier climes of Victoria, Edmonds trained in partnership with his father Toby at the Gold Coast Turf Club, and it was at the adjacent Magic Millions sales complex in January 2024 that he first clapped eyes on the horse that could come to define his early tenure in his adopted state.

Since the filly had been plucked from the previous year’s Magic Millions Gold Coast National Weanling Sale for the not insignificant sum of $220,000 - and by a very astute judge in Suman Hedge - Edmonds naturally assumed that, as a young trainer with a limited budget and few backers to rely on, Lot 415 would be well outside his price range.

However, perhaps due to her diminutive frame and the fact that her dam Alliterate (Al Maher) was neither a racetrack star nor a proven producer, he managed to seal a deal for $160,000 for the filly, who was bred by Deep Field’s former owner Alan Bell.

With only tentative offers of support at that stage, Edmonds’ outlay still represented something of a risk but he has been duly rewarded for his bold bid with Extragalactic already recouping her purchase price from a six-start career which has yielded three wins and a pair of placings.

“She wasn’t overly big but she’s very athletic, and that’s what I’m always looking for in any horse,” Edmonds said.

“You could tell that she needed time and was never going to be an early two-year-old type, so I knew we’d have to be patient but she had the potential to grow and develop into a beautiful filly. I had to take a bit of a punt because I didn’t have the biggest budget, and to be honest I didn’t think I’d be able to afford her but maybe she fell through the cracks. I bought her on spec, because at that stage I’d only just announced that I was going out on my own so I didn’t have any clients to back me.

“But luckily I managed to fill her up with some great owners, and they’ve also since jumped into some other horses in the stable so she’s already been good for my business. I’ve had a few other inquiries since she’s come along but if she were to run in The Goodwood and run well in it, which we think she could, then you’d like to think the phone might start ringing with potential new owners.”

Edmonds was under no illusions about the scale of the task he faced when he effectively started a new operation from scratch, but the hardships the 35-year-old has faced have certainly tested his character and resolve.

The training ranks in Victoria are fiercely competitive, with the Darwinian survival of the fittest model exacerbated by an increasingly uncertain economic climate, so to build a sustainable model as a relative unknown is no easy feat.

At times, Edmonds has been moved to question his sanity for his decision to leave the relative safety and sanctity of a successful training partnership with his old man; but with some nice young horses coming through and Extragalactic garnering plenty of attention since opening her autumn campaign with a 3.5-length romp, the future looks considerably brighter now than it did 12 months ago.

“There’s no doubt it’s been tough, in fact very tough at times,” he said.

“We’ve turned the corner to an extent thanks to this filly, but we’ve still got a stable full of either lightly-raced or unraced horses. So that’s clearly a challenge when you’re trying to make a name for yourself and garner a bit more support.

“I’m working my backside off but winning is the best currency in this game, and until she [Extragalactic] came along we probably hadn’t been doing that enough. Winning city races is the only real way to get your brand out there and show people that you’re capable. There have been times when I’ve questioned my sanity but there’s no point whinging about it, and for the most part I’m really enjoying the challenge.”
