Straight Charge (Credit: Bradley Photos)

Speed machine Straight Charge (Written By) has been signed to cover his first book at Westbury Park in Western Australia.

In just a handful of starts, Straight Charge proved himself one of the best colts of his generation with a powerful front-running victory in the 2024 edition of the ATC Silver Slipper Stakes (Gr 2, 1100m) at Rosehill.

Trained by Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott, the well bred Straight Charge joined an elite roll-call of Silver Slipper winners destined for stud when defeating stablemate Espionage (Zoustar) clocking 64.47s on a Soft 6 over 1100m.

What's On

That bettered the Silver Slipper winning times of high-profile stallions Farnan (64.75s) and Home Affairs (64.98s) who also won their editions on Soft surfaces in 2020 and 2021 respectively.

Straight Charge has been purchased by Gray and Patsy Williamson from Yulong who know the sireline well with champion stallion Written Tycoon the patriarch of its roster at its Victorian operation.

Williamson is one of the most successful studmasters of the modern era in WA having launched the careers of Champion WA stallions Playing God (Blackfriars), Oratorio (Stravinsky), I’m All The Talk (Stratum) and Metal Storm (Kenmare).  He also resurrected the stud career of Don’t Say Halo (Halo) at Mungrup.

“Dave Morrissey from Cannon Hayes Stud gave me the heads up he was available,” Gray said.  “He’s a real athlete.  The four-legged equivalent of Carl Lewis.  The female side of the family is kicking on, too.  His 2yo full-brother Jarbardar won at his first start at Wagga and then finished second to the Home Affairs filly Natural Fling at Caulfield last Saturday week.

”Straight Charge has shown the temperament, speed and early maturity to throw those early 2yo and 3yo winners that the market desires.   He's also an easy mate as he's Danehill free, and his physique will be a great attribute for the mare base we have in WA.

“Add in the Champion stallions Written Tycoon and I Am Invincible that Straight Charge's pedigree brings and it was an easy decision.”

His dam Matryoshka (I Am Invincible) was in the news again at the Inglis Australian Easter Sale last month when her Zoustar yearling colt was purchased by China Horse Club and Newgate Bloodstock for $1.45 million making him the highest priced Zoustar at the 2026 Sales.

Westbury Park owner Phil Ibbotson will stand Straight Charge in association with Mungrup alongside Gray’s daughter Claire Williamson and her partner Coel Hunter.  They operate Willaview Park and already have a Westbury connection through A Lot (Tapit) who transferred from Willaview after he claimed the WA First-Season title in 2022.

Straight Charge is from the second-crop by Written By who was named Australia’s Champion 2YO Colt after winning the 2018 MRC Blue Diamond Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) at Caulfield.  He was bred by Scott Robertson and offered by Twin Hills Stud (as agent) at the 2022 Inglis Australian Weanling Sale where he caught the attention of Paul Moroney and Alan Fu (Pegasus Bloodstock).

“Scott doesn’t live far from us in Wagga and wanted to sell the colt as a foal,” Twin Hills owner Olly Tait recalled.  “I had never seen him until he arrived here and I distinctly remember thinking, ‘Wow, you are a very, very nice horse’.  He was a stunning colt and made $160,000.”

Straight Charge was then raised by Greg and Jo Griffin at Lime Country Thoroughbreds in NSW.  “My first impressions were he would keep improving because he wasn’t furnished and had room to go forward,” Jo said.  “He was a very busy yearling and would get bored easily.

“Alan Fu is a New Zealand-based client and selected Straight Charge with Paul and Catheryne Bruggeman.  They pinhooked him for $160,000 and I think Alan might have gone a couple more bids because he was feeling bullish.”

Lime Country put him through its consignment to the 2023 Gold Coast Magic Millions Yearling Sale where Yulong purchased him for $270,000.  “I wasn’t sure whether he would be mature enough to be up and running early,” Jo added.  “But he thrived with Gai and Adrian and they did a fantastic job.”

Straight Charge was runner-up to Espionage on debut in the ATC Breeders’ Plate (Gr 3, 1000m) at Randwick and broke his maiden in style at his next outing when victorious by the best part of four lengths at Randwick on Christmas Eve.

Winning jockey Tim Clark rated him a faster horse than stablemate Storm Boy (Justify) who he had partnered to a winning debut at Rosehill a fortnight earlier.  “Straight Charge has the speed and Storm Boy has a lot of depth,” Clark declared.  “They’re both extremely talented colts.”

Bott concurred after the Drinkwise Plate.  “That’s what we were hoping to see from Straight Charge,” he said.  “He’s showing good improvement off that first prep and has that great tactical speed which is a big asset.  He’s still a bit new but was able to quicken up nicely and put them away.”

Waterhouse and Bott were looking forward to their duel in the Magic Millions 2YO Classic (RL, 1200m) but Straight Charge missed the Gold Coast feature with an elevated temperature leaving the field clear for Storm Boy to claim the winner’s share of the $3 million prizemoney pool.

Straight Charge recovered in time to win the stallion-making Silver Slipper and Bott told Sky Thoroughbreds he had been impressive from the outset.  “He has that great early, sustained speed and he showcased that natural brilliance today.  That’s what we’ve seen all the way through.”

Following the Silver Slipper, he was run down by subsequent VRC Coolmore Stud Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) winner Switzerland (Snitzel) in the ATC Todman Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) in an encouraging dress-rehearsal for the $5 million Golden Slipper Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m).

Waterhouse and Bott accepted with six starters for the Golden Slipper and Straight Charge sat outside longshot stablemate Shangri La Express (Alabama Express) clocking some helter-skelter sectionals.  He was still in the firing line at the furlong until fancied stablemate Lady Of Camelot (Written Tycoon) tracked him through a gap to triumph in Australia’s richest 2YO race.

In what was his only unplaced result, Straight Charge finished sixth beaten two lengths after setting the early speed battle that saw Lady Of Camelot clock 69.76s which has only been bettered by Shinzo (69.65s) in the last decade of Golden Slippers.

He returned from an extended spell to win a Rosehill barrier trial in February, however, a suspensory injury forced Straight Charge into an early retirement after just five starts.

Written By is off to a resounding start to his stud career with The Novelist, Straight Charge and The Playwright all Group winning 2YOs in his first, second and third crops.  He’s also building a great strike-rate in Perth led by Placid Ark Stakes (Listed, 1200m) winners Ripcord and Wind And The Lion.

Straight Charge will stand for a fee of $6,600 alongside A Lot (Tapit) for $7,700 while Winning Rupert (Written Tycoon) and My Admiration (Encosta De Lago) will stand for $4,400 at Westbury Park.

Great Southern catalogue now released

Streisand winner of the Blue Diamond (Gr 1, 1200m) is a graduate of the Great Southern sale (Credit: Racing Photos)

The Inglis Great Southern weanling sale will return to a two day sale this year with a total of 430 lots catalogued, an increase of 100 more than last year, on Thursday June 11 and Friday June 12 to be held at Oaklands Junction.

Following a bumper 2025 Australian Weanling Sale in Sydney, the Melbourne equivalent was reduced to a single day last year but returns to the two day format with the strong support of 48 individual vendors and the progeny of over 100 different stallions including Alabama Express (Redoute’s Choice), Anamoe (Street Boss), Castelvecchio (Dundeel), Ghaiyyath (Dubawi), Harry Angel (Dark Angel), Hellbent (I Am Invincible), Home Affairs (I Am Invincible), Ole Kirk (Written Tycoon), Proisir (Choisir), Savabeel (Zabeel), So You Think (High Chaparral), Starspangledbanner (Choisir), Stay Inside (Extreme Choice), Street Boss (Street Cry), Super Seth (Dundeel), Too Darn Hot (Dubawi), Toronado (High Chaparral), Wootton Bassett (Iffraaj).

There is no better advertisement for a sale than the success of recent graduates and the Great Southern sale has never been short of flag bearers. The current headline horse, Streisand (2 f Magnus - Zouper Star) was a $22,000 Great Southern Weanling Sale purchase and went on to win the Blue Diamond (Gr 1, 1200m),  and finished second in the Golden Slipper (Gr 1, 1200m), earning her connections $2.4 million. Meanwhile the undefeated Well Written (3 f Written Tycoon - Mozzie Monster) cost just $32,500 from the sale and has won just shy of $2.2 million from six starts including the NZ 1000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) and the $4 million The Kiwi (L, 1500m).

Where there is quality, pinhookers will play and some of this year’s best pinhook results stemmed from the 2025 edition; $335,000 into $1.3m, $40,000 into NZ$360,000, $160,000 into $375,000, $60,000 into $250,000, $20,000 into $210,000.

Of particular interest to pinhookers will be the weanlings by first season sires such as Benbatl (Dubawi), Chaldean (Frankel), Cylinder (Exceed and Excel), Doull (Snitzel), Generation (Snitzel), Gold Trip (Outstrip), Hawaii Five Oh (I Am Invincible), King Colorado (Kingman), King’s Gambit (I Am Invincible), Lofty Strike (Snitzel), Mo’unga (Savabeel), Native Trail (Oasis Dream), Oxley Road (Exceed and Excel), Ozzmosis (Zoustar) and Shinzo (Snitzel).

Inglis Victorian Bloodstock Manager James Price is delighted with the broad support of the sale of respected vendors.

“Our weanling sales series has strong momentum and the success of the Great Southern Sale is a big part of that,’’ Price said.

“Opportunity abounds at this sale, whether you are a trader, trainer, owner, agent or syndicator,” enthused Price. “The combination of sale ring and racetrack results that have their origin at this sale is compelling.”

All weanlings purchased at the Great Southern Weanling Sale are eligible for the $12 million Inglis Race Series which features the $2 million Millennium, $1 million Pink Bonus Series and $5 million Xtra Bonus Series.

Selling will begin at 1pm on June 11 where the first 160 lots will be offered while Friday will see the remainder of the catalogue, plus supplementary entries and will be offered from 10am.

Lady of Camelot retired

Lady Of Camelot (Credit: Sportpix)

Lady Of Camelot (4 m Written Tycoon - Miss Debutante), the brilliant winner of the 2024 Golden Slipper (Gr 1, 1200m) has been retired from racing due to a stingray injury earlier this week. The daughter of Written Tycoon had been set to contest Saturday’s Doomben 10,000 (Gr 1, 1200m) before a possible trip to Royal Ascot, however the incident prematurely ended her plans, “She is recovering well and we expect her to be released from the vet clinic in the coming days,” Go Bloodstock director Steve O'Connor told Racing.com. “The injury rules her out of the Winter Carnival and Ascot, which is a shame as she was well. Ascot was the final frontier for her as a Slipper winner, so she will be retired from racing now.” Bred and raced by Go Bloodstock principal Sir Owen Glenn, Lady Of Camelot retires as one of the standout fillies of her generation. Alongside her Golden Slipper triumph, she also captured the Widden Stakes (Gr 3, 1100m) at two and finished runner-up in the Blue Diamond Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m). Trained by Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott, the mare also placed in the Moir Stakes (Gr 1, 1000m), Coolmore Stud Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m), Surround Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) and Coolmore Classic (Gr 1, 1500m). Lady Of Camelot is out of Listed-winning Fastnet Rock (Danehill) mare Miss Debutante, who is also the dam of Group winners Queen Of The Ball (I Am Invincible) and Platinum Jubilee (Zoustar). Unplaced on only four occasions, Lady of Camelot retires with two wins from 14 starts and earnings just shy of $6 million.

West Coast impresses on debut at Gold Coast

West Coast (2 g St Mark’s Basilica - La Girl) made a winning start to his career at the Gold Coast on Saturday, providing freshman sire St Mark's Basilica with another Southern Hemisphere winner. Trained by Kurt Goldman, the gelding was dual accepted for the Spirit Of Boom Classic (Gr 2, 1200m) at Eagle Farm and a maiden on the Gold Coast polytrack, with connections opting for the easier assignment over 1100m. Sent out favourite under Benjamin Osmond, West Coast settled back before producing a strong finishing burst to score by half a length. Purchased by Mamba Strategic for $220,000 from Yulong’s draft at the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale, West Coast is the second winner from two foals to race out of La Girl. The mare is a winning daughter of Not A Single Doubt (Redoute’s Choice) and a half-sister to stakes winner Oughton (More Than Ready) as well as the dam of Group 1 winner Captured By Love (Written Tycoon). West Coast becomes the fourth Southern Hemisphere-bred winner from a dozen starters for St Mark’s Basilica and the third Australian winner.

William Pike to be inducted into WA Hall of Fame

Champion jockey William Pike will headline the Western Australian Racing Hall of Fame class of 2026, with trainer Paddy Ward, owner-breeder Robert Holmes à Court and multiple Group 1 winner Black Heart Bart (Blackfriars) also set to be inducted. The quartet will be formally recognised at the 2025/26 Thoroughbred Racing Awards on August 22. Known throughout the industry as “The Wizard”, Pike was informed of the honour during a race meeting at Belmont Park, adding another milestone to a career that has made him one of Western Australia’s most accomplished riders. Raised in Coolgardie, Pike emerged from country racing ranks to become a dominant metropolitan rider, amassing more than 3,000 career wins, including over 100 at stakes level. Among his major achievements are six Railway Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m), five Perth Cups (Gr 2, 2400m), three Winterbottom Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) and two Kingston Town Classics (Gr 1, 1800m), alongside Group 1 victories interstate and in Hong Kong. “I’m a little bit taken aback, actually. It’s a prestigious list and history of racing in WA racing and I am proud to be part of it,” Pike told Racing WA TV. An emotional Pike continued, “Hopefully, I have a few more years in me, I am really proud to be there on the night and to be considered is really nice. It’s an absolute honour and a privilege to be considered amongst some of those names,” Pike said. Paddy Ward is remembered as one of the state’s pioneering trainers, while Holmes à Court established one of Australia’s leading breeding and racing operations, highlighted by Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) winner Black Knight (Silver Knight). Black Heart Bart earned his place in the Hall of Fame following six Group 1 victories, including the Underwood Stakes (Gr 1, 1800m) as a nine-year-old.

Williams booked for Splash Back’s Stradbroke tilt

Craig Williams has been booked to partner Splash Back (Le Havre) in next month’s Stradbroke Handicap (Gr 1, 1400m) at Eagle Farm. Trainer Grahame Begg confirmed Williams would take the ride after regular jockey Jordan Childs was unable to make the lightweight expected for the Brisbane feature. “Craig Williams is booked to ride her in the Stradbroke with Jordan Childs riding her in the Kingsford Smith,” Begg said. “The handicapper has told me she will get 52 or 52-and-a-half kilos in the Straddie, which is too light for Jordie. You want a marquee jockey that can ride light in these races.” Splash Back stamped herself as a genuine Stradbroke contender when resuming with victory in the Victory Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) at Eagle Farm earlier this month. She will continue her Brisbane campaign in the Kingsford Smith Cup (Gr 1, 1300m) at Eagle Farm on May 30 before heading to the Stradbroke two weeks later. Begg elected to bypass Saturday’s Doomben 10,000 (Gr 1, 1200m), preferring to keep the mare on the more spacious Eagle Farm circuit. “She was going to get back out of her ground, and they’d be off and gone by the time she straightened and balanced up,” he said. Meanwhile, stablemate She's A Hustler (Ace High) will represent the yard in Saturday’s Doomben Cup (Gr 1, 2000m). The mare heads into the race off a last-start third behind Pride Of Jenni (Pride of Dubai) and Birdman (Free Eagle) in the Hollindale Stakes (Gr 2, 1800m).

Stakes targets emerge for unbeaten Grinzinger Moon

Grinzinger Moon (Credit: Race Images)

Grinzinger Moon (4 m Puissance De Lune - Taqdees) continued her unbeaten New Zealand campaign at Te Rapa on Saturday, with trainer Roger James suggesting stakes races could now be on the agenda for the progressive mare. Originally trained in Australia by Ben Brisbourne, the mare won four straight races before a pair of unplaced runs last winter saw owner-breeder John Wheeler retire her to stud. However, after she was unable to get in foal in New Zealand, she returned to training with James and training partner Robert Wellwood. Following a winning New Zealand debut at Ellerslie last week, Grinzinger Moon backed up with another strong performance at Te Rapa under Ethan Jones despite covering extra ground throughout. “It was a huge effort,” James said. “She was three wide facing the breeze the whole way outside the leaders. If she had fallen in the ground at the 300m you wouldn’t have blamed her.” James said the mare had earned the chance to be aimed towards better sprint races later in the year. “She is a mare that could be worthy of sitting tight and setting for some of the better sprints in the summertime,” he said. “She has certainly done that, so we might have a bit of fun in the spring.” Grinzinger Moon is out of the Redoute's Choice mare Taqdees (ex Later Gator) and has now won six of her 10 starts. The victory completed a stable double after Incandescent (Per Incanto) captured the Champagne Stakes (Listed, 1600m) earlier on the card.

Ima Brazen One rewards connections at Ōtaki

Ima Brazen One (5 m Brazen Beau - Imanana) delivered a deserved victory for her large ownership group when taking out the Jennian Homes Handicap (1200m) at Ōtaki on Saturday. Trained by Mike Breslin, the daughter of Brazen Beau had been luckless first-up at Woodville when hampered by a fallen runner before finishing second by a neck. She made amends at Ōtaki under in-form apprentice Toni Davies, who sent the mare straight to the lead and controlled the race throughout. Ima Brazen One found strongly in the straight to hold off a late challenge from Legally Binding (Exceedance) and score by half a length. The mare races under the In To Win syndication banner run by former jockey Tineke Balcombe, who was trackside to celebrate with connections. “I think she really deserved that win and we were quietly confident,” Balcombe said. “Last start she should have won as she clipped a fallen horse and still managed to fight on when she probably should have chucked it in. She has matured a bit now and ran hard to the line.” Davies also praised the mare’s determination after completing a winning treble on the card. “When she gets left alone like that she really knuckles down and nothing was going to cross me,” Davies said. Bred by Cambridge Stud principals Sir Brendan and Lady Jo Lindsay, Ima Brazen One was purchased for $100,000 from the farm’s 2022 Karaka Yearling Sale draft. She has now won six of her 20 starts.

JPN: Embroidery confirms dominance with Victoria Mile triumph

Embroidery (4 m Admire Mars - Rottenmeier) cemented her status as Japan’s leading female miler with a commanding victory in the Victoria Mile in Tokyo (Gr 1, 1600m), securing her third Group 1 success. The champion mare entered the race as a dominant favourite following her Hanshin Himba Stakes (Gr 2, 1600m) victory in April and once again proved too strong under Christophe Lemaire. Already crowned Japan’s champion three-year-old filly after victories in the Oka Sho (Gr 1, 1600m) and Shuka Sho (Gr 1, 2000m) last season, Embroidery added another elite-level success with an authoritative performance. Jumping cleanly from barrier 12, she settled around midfield before improving steadily around the turn. Lemaire angled the filly into the clear early in the straight and she quickly put the race beyond doubt, surging clear over the final 200 metres to score by 1-1/4 lengths. “It was a perfect race,” Lemaire said. “She responded really well on the uphill stretch, and I was confident we could win again. She’s a smart horse with a strong mentality, and she’s developing physically as well, she’s truly a Group 1-calibre horse.” The victory provided trainer Kazutomo Mori with his third JRA Group 1 success, all with Embroidery, while Lemaire extended his record to five wins in the Victoria Mile and celebrated his 60th JRA Group 1 victory. Kamunyak (Black Tide) finished second after tracking the winner throughout, while last year’s runner-up Queen's Walk (Kizuna) produced a strong late finish to edge out Erika Express (Epiphaneia) for third.

HK: HK Trainers Premiership heats up

Francis Lui (Credit: HKJC)

While Zac Purton has the Jockeys Premiership secured in his relentless march towards a remarkable 2000 career victories in HK, the Hong Kong Trainers Premiership is anything but over. A treble from 2023-24 champion trainer, Francis Lui Kin-wai at Sha Tin on Sunday has added extra spice to an already tasty stoush at the top of the trainers table. The results put Lui within four wins of championship leader Danny Shum Chap-shing, who sits on 54 wins ahead of Australian Mark Newnham (52 wins) in his third season and four time champion trainer Caspar Fownes (51). David Hayes (48) is in the mix to claim his first title since 1996/97 and 1997/98. “I’ll keep trying my best for the championship but it’s hard – it’s very competitive and there’s plenty of time to go,” Lui said. “It’s getting exciting, the championship is so competitive, and I will just try to keep my horses performing.” Thunder Kit (Rich Enuff) a winner at Oakbank pre-import broke his Hong Kong maiden for Lui following an earlier victory by the exciting Superb Spirit (Zousain) winning as his second HK start in the Class Four Luk Wu Handicap (1,200m). Lui brought up the treble with irish galloper Meaningful Dragon (Cavaggio).

UK: Dwyer to oversee Asfoora’s Royal Ascot lead-up

Henry Dwyer will travel to the UK this week to oversee the next stage of Asfoora’s (Flying Artie) European campaign ahead of a third tilt at Royal Ascot. The Ballarat trainer departs on Monday and will watch the mare complete her final piece of work before Saturday’s Temple Stakes (Gr 2, 1000m) at Haydock Park. Dwyer will then return to Australia before heading back to England ahead of the King Charles III Stakes (Gr 1, 1000m) at Royal Ascot on June 16. Asfoora won the King Charles III Stakes in 2024 before finishing fifth in last year’s edition. She remained in Europe following that campaign and later added further Group 1 success in the Nunthorpe Stakes (Gr 1, 1000m) at York and Prix de l’Abbaye (Gr 1, 1000m) at Longchamp. The daughter of Flying Artie resumed earlier this month when 11th in the Palace House Stakes (Gr 3, 1000m) at Newmarket under the care of Lemos De Souza. Dwyer said the mare had taken benefit from the run and was progressing well toward Royal Ascot. “Reports are good and she pulled-up well from her first-up run,” Dwyer said. “She obviously needed the run there. “She will go to Haydock Park next Saturday and run a bit better, but probably will still need it a bit, but then she’ll be ready to rock ’n roll for Royal Ascot.” Dwyer said he planned to return to England around two weeks before Royal Ascot and remain there throughout the carnival.

USA: Napoleon Solo lands historic Preakness victory at Laurel Park

Napoleon Solo (3 c Liam’s Map - Atomic Blonde) enhanced his standing among America’s leading three-year-olds with a dominant victory in the Preakness Stakes (Gr 1, 9.5f) at Laurel Park on Saturday, becoming the first horse to win the race at the temporary venue while Pimlico undergoes redevelopment. The colt settled just off the speed under Paco Lopez before taking control on the home turn and pulling clear to defeat Iron Honor (Nyquist) by 1-1/4 lengths, with Chip Honcho (Connect) finishing third. Prepared by Chad Summers for owner Al Gold’s Gold Square. An undefeated, Group One winning 2yo, Napoleon Solo had endured a frustrating start to his three-year-old season after bypassing the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (Gr 1, 8.5f) last year in a bid to target the Kentucky Derby (Gr 1, 10f). Consecutive fifth placings in the Fountain Of Youth Stakes (Gr 2, 8.5f) and Wood Memorial Stakes (Gr 2, 9f), combined with minor setbacks, ultimately saw connections redirect towards the Preakness. “I thought this was going to be the best performance of his life,” Summers said. “Nothing went right to start his three-year-old year.” Napoleon Solo becomes the first classic winner and first grade 1 winner this season for Lane’s End stallion Liam’s Map. Bred in Kentucky by John Gunther and Eurowest Bloodstock, he is out of stakes-winning Scat Daddy mare Atomic Blonde (Scat Daddy) and was a $40,000 shrewd purchase by his trainer from the Glennwood Farm draft at the 2024 Keeneland September Sale.
Connections are now expected to target the Haskell Stakes (Gr 1, 9f) at Monmouth Park rather than the Belmont Stakes (Gr 1, 12f).
