Lope De Vega colt tops the charts on opening day

The principle of supply and demand ultimately determines the value of any product, and so it was of no great surprise that the only lots by Lope De Vega (Shamardal), Extreme Choice (Not A Single Doubt) and I Am Invincible (Invincible Spirit) on offer on the opening day of the Magic Millions Gold Coast National Yearling Sale commanded the three highest prices.

Buying on behalf of prominent Queensland owners Ron and Judi Wanless, KPW Bloodstock’s Kevin Walls secured Lope De Vega’s crack colt for a sale-topping price of $600,000, which was followed closely by Michael Freedman’s successful bid of $580,000 for the filly by Extreme Choice, Newgate Stud’s phenom who will have three more lots up for auction on the second and final day on the Gold Coast.

After a competitive opening day of trading, Mitchell Bloodstock and Gall Bloodstock - two families already entwined in I Am Invincible’s incredible success story - will be hoping to write another chapter after they teamed up to purchase the sale’s sole ‘Vinny’ representative for $500,000.

What's On

But it was the less fashionable Lope De Vega, whose achievements (at least in the southern hemisphere) have been dwarfed by those of Extreme Choice and I Am Invincible, who ended the day with top honours thanks to Walls’ determination.

The former Trelawney Stud manager is known to buy primarily on type and he could not resist the appeal of Lot 913, whose impressively versatile sire is still having an influence in Australia some 12 years after he last stood on these shores.

Yulong principal Yuesheng Zhang is known to be an admirer of Lope De Vega - his Group 1-winning son Lucky Vega is doing a very solid job on the farm’s roster in Nagambie - and so there is a better than even chance that the Chinese mining magnate (or at least one of his representatives) was the online underbidder.

Regardless, it was ultimately Walls who emerged victorious from a heated bidding battle for the Glenbeigh Farm-consigned colt, whose unraced dam Palme d’Or (Siyouni) is a half-sister to stakes winner Francesco Guardi (Frankel).

Given that Francesco Guardi won the 2022 Moonee Valley Gold Cup (Gr 2, 2500m) for his former trainer Chris Waller, and Lope De Vega’s most recent Australian Group 1 win came courtesy of Arapaho’s stout staying effort in last year’s Sydney Cup (3200m), it would seem rather unlikely that Palme d’Or’s first foal will be a precocious two-year-old performer.

It would be unwise to pigeonhole the colt prematurely, however, especially given Lope De Vega has also sired a plethora of Group 1-winning sprinters including Santa Ana Lane, Vega Magic, Gytrash and Vega One.

“As soon as he walked out of the box, I just hoped he met our criteria,” said Walls.

“Once he did he was always going to be on our radar, and Ron told me to buy him - so that’s what I did.”

Kerry Stephens, who runs Glenbeigh in tandem with her partner Denis Griffin, was understandably delighted to secure such a sizable sum for the colt’s breeders at Ballylinch Stud, where Lope De Vega stands.

Griffin used to work at Ballylinch before emigrating to Australia, and maintaining that pre-existing relationship has paid off handsomely as Glenbeigh secured top billing on their first foray to this sale.

“He’s a beautiful horse and it’s a great result,” Stephens told ANZ News.

“This is our first draft at this sale so we’re obviously delighted to sell the top lot on the opening day. We had put a reserve price of $250,000 on the colt, we thought that he might sell for around $300,000 so to get double that for him was a very nice surprise.

“I’d like to thank the breeders at Ballylinch for entrusting us to sell the colt for them. I’m sure they’ll be very happy with the price, and we are too. I’d also like to wish Ron and Judi all the best with the colt, and we’ll certainly be following his progress closely in the future.”

Extreme Choice was the dominant force on day two of last week’s National Broodmare Sale, when a pair of mares carrying his prized foals were the subject of intense duels in the auditorium, and the county’s most expensive stallion again proved his worth when Lot 1002 changed hands for $580,000.

Freedman partnered with bloodstock agent Andrew Williams to acquire the filly, whose stakes-winning dam Volks Lightning (Volksraad) has hit the ground running in the breeding barn with her first foal Volkano (Too Darn Hot) dominating his rivals by 4.5 lengths on his debut as a juvenile.

The filly looks to have an abundance of speed and the same applies to the prized daughter of I Am Invincible (Lot 872), whose stakes-winning dam Loveyamadly (Bel Esprit) holds the 1100-metre track record at Flemington.

The mare has already produced two stakes winners in Immortal Love (Snitzel) and I’mlovin’ya (Capitalist), so Newhaven Park principal John Kelly fully expected her ninth foal to be held in high regard.

“I’m thrilled for the filly’s owners, it’s a great result for them,” he said.

“She came to us in great order from Sledmere, she has performed perfectly all week and she sold accordingly.”

The identity of the filly’s buyers could perhaps be predicted in advance given that the Mitchell and Gall families have such a long association with I Am Invincible, the three-time champion sire who stands at Yarraman Park for a 2026 service fee of $220,000 (inc GST).

Yarraman is run by directors Arthur and Harry Mitchell, while their brother Bill is now primarily in the bloodstock business having formed an agency with his son James in 2020.

The duo pounced on the filly in partnership with Ray and Brett Gall, who bred I Am Invincible’s dam Cannarelle (Canny Lad) and were part of the colt’s ownership group before sending him to stud at Yarraman upon his retirement from the racetrack in late 2009.

The quartet therefore know a good Vinny yearling when they see one, and according to James Mitchell this filly oozed class.

“She has paraded beautifully all week,” he told ANZ.

The thing that stood out to me the most was her attitude, she just handled the sale so calmly and never put a foot out of line. She's well-made and has a good girth, all round just about faultless really.

JAMES MITCHELL

“She’s got a lovely action and a beautiful head and eye on her. Obviously she’s by a champion stallion who we’ve always loved and has been so good to the Mitchell and Gall families. We’re thrilled to have her and Ray [Gall] is a great racing man, so he’s over the moon as well.

“The thing that stood out to me the most was her attitude, she just handled the sale so calmly and never put a foot out of line. She's well-made and has a good girth, all round just about faultless really.”

On future plans with the filly, Mitchell added: “I don't think she'll be rushed. The I Am Invincible's, while they show immense ability early, I think the best thing you can do is take them through slowly and show patience with them.

“She will go back to Yarraman Park and then will head into the break and then after that it is just about taking her along.

“We haven't assigned a trainer yet so we've not made any immediate plans, but I'd say she'll be given a chance to run at two post-Christmas and ideally we'd be looking for a really lovely backend of the two-year-old season and into the three-year-old season. Hopefully she can go on to be a nice mare, they certainly train on the 'Vinnie's'.”

Other notable sales included Lot 897, the Zoustar (Northern Meteor) colt sold by Barramul Stud for $380,000.

Barramul has consigned the sale topper at this auction for the past two years, and while that dream still remains alive for stud principal Gerry Harvey with nine offerings - including a chestnut Snitzel (Redoute’s Choice) colt - set to go through the ring on the second and final day, the farm just missed out on the podium after the opening session.

Their Zoustar colt was typical of the breed, and with his dam Mnemonic (Hussonet) having already produced a pair of stakes winners, the Macedon Racing team of John Symons and Sheila Laxon were persuaded to purchase him for just under $400,000.

“We’ve bought a lot of horses from Gerry over the years, including a Zoustar colt [Star Of Macedon] that ran third at Caulfield on the weekend,” said Symons.

“Gerry’s great for the industry and we thought this colt was probably underpriced for what we paid for him. If he’d been up for sale here in January, he probably would have made at least $700,000.”

Across the day almost $7.4 million was traded on 122 lots sold at an average price of $60,578 (up from $44,961 on last year) and clearance rate of 76 per cent.

"It was a really strong market here today," Magic Millions managing director Barry Bowditch said.

"It's great to see such a diverse buying bench with good local and interstate participation which has been complemented by the international market - Hong Kong, Philippines, China, New Zealand and others.

"Whether it was a colt or a filly of quality that entered the ring there was good participation and great competition.

"Looking at the figures from previous years it's hard not to be pleased with the increases across the board in today's sale.

"Vendors are very willing to meet the market - those who got their horses on the market received good competition and it was a solid and genuine day in the sales ring.

"There's plenty to look forward to tomorrow. It will bring down the curtain on what's been a massive couple of weeks on the Gold Coast."

The final day gets underway at 11am on Tuesday morning, with Newgate’s three remaining offerings by Extreme Choice - Lots 1040, 1077 and 1150 - almost certain to be in high demand.

Morning Briefing

Bruce aims high with Highgrove Rose

Jack Bruce (Credit: Sportpix)

Four years after taking out his license Jack Bruce will saddle his first Group 1 runner when Highgrove Rose (King's Legacy) contests the Queensland Oaks (Gr 1, 2200m) at Eagle Farm on Saturday. It’s been a long road to a Group 1 for both Bruce and Highgrove Rose. The Kiwi turned Queenslander pursued Accounting, Finance and Economics studies at University whilst earning his stripes at Windsor Park Stud which lead to the Darley Flying Start program and then stints with leading stables of Godolphon, Baker, Maher and Waller.
Bruce notched his first stakes win with Axe (Written Tycoon) in the Weetwood Handicap (Listed, 1200m) in 2022 and is hoping to join some of his former mentors as a Group 1-winning trainer this weekend. “It’s a great feeling to have a Group 1 starter so early in my career,” Bruce said. “I bought this filly as a yearling and put some clients into her.” Bruce had planned to run Highgrove Rose in the ANZ Bloodstock News The Roses (Gr 2, 2000m) at Doomben last month but baulked at the prospect of a heavy track instead successfully opting for a Benchmark 65 (1900m) on the Gold Coast Polytrack. Highgrove Rose then finished second over 2200 metres on May 27 providing enough prize-money to qualify for the Oaks. “Her win at the Gold Coast was awesome and her run at Doomben was also very good" Bruce said. “She was powerful to the line, which was a good sign going into the Oaks.” It would also be a first Group 1 victory for her Coolmore sire King’s Legacy (Redoute's Choice), who stands for $11,000 (inc GST) in 2026.

Melham’s replace McDonald in Oaks

Chris Waller will have three runners in the $700,000 Queensland Oaks in Panova (Trapeze Artist), Chispa (Savabeel) and Soverato (Vadamos), with the first two needing new jockeys after James McDonald partnered both in their lead-ups. McDonald misses the meeting due to a suspension incurred in Hong Kong on May 24. Panova and Chispa will be ridden by Ben Melham and Jamie Melham respectively with Ryan Maloney on Soverato. Panova is striving to emulate another Waller-trained filly, Egg Tart (Sebring), as the only horse to complete the Australasian Oaks (Gr 1, 2010m)/Queensland Oaks double. "She's come out of the South Australian Oaks win in good shape," Waller said. "She's travelled to Melbourne, she's travelled to Adelaide, she's travelled back to Melbourne, she's travelled back up to Sydney, she's travelled [to the Gold Coast]. That's a lot of travel, so we chose not to run her again and she's well. It was a great win last start and 2200 metres should be no problem." Waller's two other runners have come through the ANZ Bloodstock News Roses, with Chispa finishing second to Fireball Miss (Bivouac) and Soverato sixth. It was a drop back in trip for Soverato who finished fifth in the ATC Oaks (Gr 1, 2400m), but was the first attempt beyond 2000 metres for Chispa and Waller doesn't have any doubts about her handling the distance. "She should get 2200 easily,” he said. The Melhams are competing for their first win in the Queensland Oaks, while Maloney is aiming for his second following Socks Nation (Sioux Nation) in 2024.

Bianco Vilano to chase hat-trick

Albury-based trainer Ron Stubbs is likely to head to Flemington with hat-trick seeker Bianco Vilano (Foxwedge) on Saturday. The seven-year-old gelding has landed the Albury Gold Cup (Listed, 2000m) and Wagga Wagga Gold Cup (Listed, 2000m) on his last two outings, and will line up in the Benchmark 100 (2000m) at HQ. "We intended running at Randwick on Saturday but then when the track got into the Heavy range we decided not to go and Flemington was always the next option," Stubbs said. "If the weather Gods are good to us, we'll definitely be there. He'll have to carry the weight, but let's hope he's good enough to do it." Bianco Vilano is yet to win anti-clockwise, but did finish runner-up in the 2023 Wodonga Cup (1590m), and has run well at Flemington in the past. "If you pushed me, I'd say we'd prefer to go the New South Wales way but, by the same token, he ran a nice fourth at Flemington a prep or two ago, so I'm really not concerned about that," Stubbs said. "You've got plenty of time once you get straightened and balance up, so if you can't do it there [Flemington], then you're never going to do it."

Ward to take aim at the Cup with Navy Seal

US Hall of Fame trainer Wesley Ward could make his first trip to Australia if Navy Seal (Dubawi) can win Thursday’s Belmont Gold Cup (Gr 2, 16f) in New York. Won last year by Parchment Party (Constitution) the Gold Cup winner is exempt from ballot for the $10 million Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m). “I've always wanted to go to Australia my whole life,” Ward told the New York Racing Association. “But the Melbourne Cup is a long stretch. I'd have to talk to [racing manager] Alex Cole and the Hays [owners] and see what they'd want to do if we're successful enough to win this race.’’ Ward explained that Navy Seal, who began his racing career under Aidan O’Brien and has raced in Ireland, France, the US, Canada, and the U.A.E, showed a liking for long distances. ‘’He trains like he'll run all day long,’’ Ward said. ‘’We've been galloping him two miles. Usually, my gallops are a little over a mile but with this guy, he goes out there and gets a pretty good clip going for two miles. The funny thing about him is you can't get him tired. He comes back feeling like a million bucks.’’ Well known for travelling horses, Ward became the first American trainer to saddle a winner at Royal Ascot in 2009, when Strike The Tiger (Tiger Ridge) won the Windsor Castle Stakes (Listed, 5f) quickly followed by Jealous Again (Trippi) claiming the Queen Mary Stakes (Gr 2 5f). Ward’s only previous campaign in Australia was with sprinter Cannonball (Catienus) who finished ninth in the 2010 Lightning Stakes (Gr 1, 1000m) behind Nicconi (Bianconi).

Heddo retires from Hawkesbury Race Club role

One of New South Wales oldest and most iconic thoroughbred racing venues is seeking a new chief executive officer (CEO) as Hawkesbury Race Club have announced that CEO James Heddo will depart on Friday, July 17. “It has been a privilege to lead Hawkesbury Race Club over the past four years and I am proud of what the team has achieved together,” Heddo said. “I wish the Club, its members, and everyone involved in racing at Hawkesbury every success into the future.” Heddo has elected to semi-retire, taking up a part-time role as general manager of Central Coast Basketball. “James has been an outstanding leader for Hawkesbury Race Club. His commitment to restoring the Club’s stability and improving its governance has made a lasting difference,” said Jo Moore, Hawkesbury Race Club administrator. ”We are a stronger and more resilient organisation because of his efforts, and on behalf of myself as administrator of the Club, I thank him sincerely for his service.” A formal recruitment process for a new CEO is underway. Further details will be provided to members and stakeholders once an appointment has been made.

Alderslade recognised in King’s Birthday Honours

Doug Alderslade  (Credit: Doug Alderslade )

Auckland Thoroughbred Racing chairman Doug Alderslade has been appointed an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit (ONZM) in the King’s Birthday Honours, recognising his outstanding contribution to New Zealand racing and breeding. Alderslade, who has served on the Auckland Racing Club board since 2003 and as chairman since 2017, said he was humbled by the recognition and viewed it as a reflection of the collective efforts of those involved in transforming racing in Auckland. “It has been a bit overwhelming, but I am appreciative and humbled by it all,” Alderslade said. “It has been a huge team effort by everybody concerned.” During his tenure, Alderslade has overseen some of the most significant developments in the club’s history, including the installation of the StrathAyr track at Ellerslie, the construction of modern stabling facilities and the sale of Ellerslie Hill, moves that have helped secure the club’s long-term financial future. He also played a key role in the 2021 amalgamation of the Auckland Racing Club and Counties Racing Club to form Auckland Thoroughbred Racing. Alderslade said the goal had always been to position racing for long-term success while providing better opportunities for owners, trainers and breeders. A successful lawyer, owner and breeder, Alderslade has also enjoyed considerable success away from the boardroom, racing Group 1 winners including Cox Plate (Gr 1, 2040m) hero Solvit (Morcon) and Australian Group 1 winner and now Vinery sire Exceedance (Exceed And Excel). While honoured by the recognition, Alderslade said there was still work to be done as Auckland Thoroughbred Racing continues to invest in the future of Ellerslie, Pukekohe and the wider New Zealand racing industry.

Maiden win just what the doctor ordered

Tardis (Credit: Race Images)

On a blustery day that ultimately led to the abandonment of racing at Te Aroha on Monday, homebred juvenile gelding Tardis  (Time Test) broke through for a deserved victory in the Mlaadi Laurich (Young Laurich’s) Maiden 1150 (1150m) for trainer Daniel Miller. Bred and raced by Miller’s parents, John and Maree, Tardis made his debut in the Counties Challenge Stakes (Listed, 1100m) at Pukekohe last November, where he finished last, but he took plenty of benefit from a spell and returned with renewed vigour when placing over 1200 metres at Matamata last month. Buoyed by that effort, Miller took plenty of confidence into Monday’s meeting, which was reflected in Warren Kennedy’s ride. Kennedy was positive out of the gates aboard the gelding, pushing him forward to take the lead, with race favourite Just The Berries (Per Incanto) sitting on his flank. The pair entered a duel down the home straight, opening up several lengths on their rivals, and Tardis continued to maintain his advantage, proving too tough in the end to win by one and a half lengths over Raymond (Ardrossan), who flew home late to nab second over Just The Berries. “We definitely had plenty of confidence, he worked with Sneaky Cyclone on Thursday and Sneaky couldn’t get past him,” Miller said. “Today is the first time where he has found the front nicely and he has always been a horse that when he does get to the front, he doesn’t like horses getting past him. The favourite has shown plenty at the trials, but he [Tardis] has got that raceday experience and he has done a lot of work for a two-year-old, so he is quite mature, and I knew he would be in for the fight.”

JPN: Caulfield an option for Feiern Kranz

Connections of Feiern Kranz (Duramente) are considering all options after earning an exemption from ballot for the Caulfield Cup (Gr 1, 2400m) with victory in Sunday’s Meguro Kinen (Gr 2, 2500m) at Tokyo. Australian Damien Lane was aboard Feiern Kranz and having won the Caulfield Cup for Japan in 2019 with the Hisashi Shimizu-trained Mer De Glace (Rulership), his feedback will be valuable. It was Feiern Kranz’s first stakes victory having previously gone close finishing third in the Sapporo Nisai Stakes (Gr 3, 1800m) and second in both the Aoba Sho (Gr 2, 2400m) and Diamond Stakes (Gr 3, 3400m), but the gelding finally broke through here to secure his long-awaited black-type victory at his tenth start. The Meguro Kinen’s honour roll includes dual winner Pop Rock (Helissio), the runner-up to Delta Blues (Dance In The Dark) in the 2006 Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m), Fame Game (Heart’s Cry), who contested the Cups double in 2017 and Stay Gold (Sunday Silence) whilst Lane is now a three-time winner of the Meguro Kinen.

UK: Ferguson to give up licence

Group 1-winning trainer James Ferguson has announced he is to stop training at the end of next month after seven years with a licence. The Newmarket-based handler has accepted a role in the international bloodstock insurance sector. Ferguson said: "Training racehorses has been both a dream and a privilege, and I leave with enormous pride in what we’ve achieved over the past seven years. This decision is driven by the opportunity I have been offered – I remain very positive about the sport and I’m looking forward to staying closely involved in the international bloodstock world in a new capacity. We have been fortunate to train some wonderful horses and to enjoy success at every level, both domestically and internationally; from our first runners through to competing at the highest level of the sport. I would like to extend my heartfelt thanks to all my owners, many of whom have supported me from the very beginning of my training career. Your loyalty, friendship and trust have meant an enormous amount to me. I cannot thank you enough for allowing me to train your horses and share so many special moments together. I would also like to pay tribute to my team all of whom have played such a vital role throughout my time training. Their hard work, dedication and passion have been the foundation of everything we have achieved. They have made the operation both rewarding and enjoyable, and I am incredibly grateful for their commitment and support."

Punters lost faith but not the connections of Electron (Turn Me Loose), winner of Saturday’s AGC Training Centre Stakes (Listed, 1600m) at Wanganui.

The mare took seven starts to win her maiden then quickly added two more wins. She has tried stakes level on 11 occasions during her 31-start career and last autumn managed a couple of Group 3 placings: game front-running and close thirds in Ellerslie’s Easter Handicap (1600m) and Trentham’s Cuddle Stakes (1600m). However, this season, apart from an open win last spring, she has found stakes class a bit of a challenge. This autumn her form has gradually improved, marked by a fighting fifth in the Rangitikei Gold Cup (Listed, 1600m), her lead-up to Saturday’s breakthrough stakes win.

Her racing pattern is to lead or sit handy to the lead and again she was a handy third turning for home, pushed between runners 200m out, co-led to form a line of three at the 100m then had a ding-dong battle with Khafre (American Pharoah) to get the nod in a head-bobber.

Electron never went through a live auction but was sourced as a three-year-old filly via an on-line auction in late 2023, fetching a meagre $1000, purchased by her trainer Sam Mynott and making her bank of a smidge under $200,000 look very healthy from six wins. “She does need the stars to align at this level, which they did today, and I knew she had a Listed win in her,” said Mynott. “She’s very special, my little $1000 purchase and she will go to the paddock now.”

The five-year-old mare represents the ninth individual stakes winner by former Windsor Park Stud stallion Turn Me Loose (Iffraaj), the latter having recently been exported to China. A wonderful racehorse who shone in two Australian Group 1s, Turn Me Loose averaged 113 mares during his first six seasons at stud but breeders lost interest after, the stallion attracting just eight mares last spring. It’s tough remaining competitive among stallions.

Electron is one of three winners from Chemistry (Shamardal), a winning daughter of Tick By (Zabeel), twice a winner at Flemington and whose two stakes placings included a third in the Queensland Oaks (Gr 1, 2400m). Tick By’s dam Klokka (Marscay) was a notch below top class as the winner of six races, five of which were Group 2s and Group 3s. At stud, Klokka foaled ten winners from 11 foals while her dam, Small Timer (Lyphard) went one better, producing eleven winners including the outstanding Italian runner Sikeston (Lear Fan) who landed seven Group 1s.

Class is permanent

Iffraaj (Credit: Darley)

Iffraaj (Zafonic) featured again this past weekend when Western Empire continued his superb run of form in Perth, getting his head down right on the line to bag the Hyperion Stakes (Gr 3, 1600m), rider Willie Pike commenting post race that the gelding has a bit of class on his side.

The talk of Perth as a three and four-year-old, scoring seven wins in 13 starts including a huge win in the Railway Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m), Western Empire had two campaigns on the East Coast of Australia but was unsuccessful at which time owner Bob Peters sold him to the gelding’s former trainers for $150,000. Grant and Alana Williams performed the same original magic and Western Empire has repaid his new owners to the tune of a further six wins and $2.1 million. His career grand total stands at more than $3.67 million.

Peters has established a large breeding empire which includes sending mares to New Zealand from time to time. His Perth Cup (Gr 2, 2400m) winner Western Jewel (Jeune) was one such mare and visited Iffraaj, then standing at Haunui Farm, on three occasions.

Peters was possibly influenced by the success of several northern hemisphere Iffraaj runners such as Wootton Bassett and Ribchester. However, he was ahead of the curve in the southern hemisphere as New Zealand Derby (Gr 1, 2400m) and Rosehill Guineas (Gr 1, 2000m) winner Gingernuts had yet to feature. Neither had Australian Derby (Gr 1, 2400m) winner Jon Snow. Their prominence took place after Peters sent Western Jewel across the Tasman although Turn Me Loose had shown his quality in Melbourne with two elite-level wins. Peters struck gold with the first match and Western Empire was the result.

The now eight-year-old is one of eight winners from Western Jewel, three of which are by Iffraaj. The mare also foaled the Listed winner Western Temple (Dream Ahead) and ranks as a half-sister to another Perth Listed winner Western Blaze (Hard Spun).

Continuing theme

The two subjects covered so far are a son as well as a granddaughter of top class sire Iffraaj, and by some coincidence, the third subject, Queensland Derby (Gr 1, 2400m) winner Providence, similarly has a close connection with Iffraaj as he is by Iffraaj’s son Wootton Bassett.

In 12 trips to New Zealand Iffraaj sired seven Group 1 winners, equalling his output of the same number of elite winners in the Northern Hemisphere. In total, the old boy, who at 25 is still listed as being available in Great Britain, standing at Darley, has sired 105 individual stakes winners.

Wootton Bassett represented Iffraaj’s first NH crop and landed Longchamp’s Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere (Gr 1, 1400m) at two. At stud Wootton Bassett defied the odds after a tardy start at stud but rose to the top causing Coolmore to take notice and make a major purchase in 2020. His stud career with them was all too short and he died last year from acute pneumonia at the young age of 17.

Shuttling to Australia, Wootton Bassett’s oldest there are three-years-olds so he has two-year-olds, yearlings and weanlings waiting in the wings. Nevertheless, his loss must have been a difficult pill to swallow and the same loss was very likely the reason that Coolmore plundered the New Zealand stud scene and whisked Super Seth (Dundeel) off to replace him. With several Australian crops and the quality of mares he attracted, there is every chance that a son or two will emerge as sire prospects.

Wootton Bassett’s first crop includes Cambridge Stud’s Almanzor, winner of the Prix du Jockey Club (Gr 1, 2100m) and who is turning out winners galore, his 2025-26 season being his best yet. Almanzor is one of 86 Wootton Bassett stakes winners.

As for Providence, he remains a colt and the Queensland Derby was his second victory but he is something of a slow maturer, taking ten starts to break his maiden. There was promise at two and he finished fifth in November’s Victoria Derby (Gr 1, 2500m) while still a maiden. He arrived at Eagle Farm in good form having finished second at Group 3 level at Randwick in April followed by a solid third at Doomben in the Rough Habit Plate (Gr 3, 2000m), his lead up.

In the Derby James McDonald set him alight at the 600m and turning for home they were widest but one. Levelling up to co-lead at the 300m the colt dashed clear and while his lead was eaten into late there was no way he was going to lose. McDonald was certainly in no panic.

Providence is a graduate of the 2024 Inglis Easter Yearling Sale and was secured for $625,000. The Derby prize took his earnings to $934,400. His dam was a winner who showed some class when finishing third in The Thousand Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) at Caulfield whereas his grandam, Rezoned (Zabeel), was successful at Group 3 level in the South Australian Fillies Classic (2500m), a race which replaced the South Australian Oaks (Gr 1, 2500m).

Rezoned ranks as a sister to champion stayer Preferment, the four-time Group 1 winner whose premier wins were Randwick’s BMW Stakes (2400m) as well as Flemington’s Australian Cup (2000m), Victoria Derby (2500m) and Turnbull Stakes (2000m). This connection might explain why Providence is only now coming into his own.

Tough

Sandown’s Sunday meeting featured the Sandown Cup (Listed, 3200m) where patrons and punters were presented with a heavy track combined with distance. Uncovering the winner of such a combo demands looking for toughness which can often be found in many New Zealand-breds. Three Kiwis lined up against a brace of five European imports.

The tote opted for Kiwi-bred The Western Front (War Decree) who started as favourite but he had to delve deep into his stamina reserves to get the win, his seventh in a light career of 18 starts and first at stakes level.

A race of two halves, only the second half saw some tactics. Rounding into the straight The Western Front sat three-wide waiting to pounce. Sandown’s straight is testing and The Western Front made the lead well before the 300m. He was unable to break clear but all the way to the line he simply refused to buckle, looking vulnerable at the 100m then holding on bravely by a half head. It was a tough win.

Similar to Electron (above), The Western Front was found on line as a weanling by Cambridge trainer Ralph Manning who outlayed $1300 for the youngster. A trial winner late in his three-year-old season preceded his sale to an Australian syndicate.

At four the gelding broke his maiden at start three and won again at start four, both at Geelong. This season he was tried over ground, scoring at Cranbourne followed by a Benchmark 78 win at Caulfield over 2400 metres and a Benchmark 84 win at Flemington over 2500 metres on ANZAC Day. Clearly he stays well and Sunday’s win took his earnings beyond $360,000.

The fourth stakes winner by War Decree (War Front), he is one of two winners from Rosaeflora (Zacinto), herself one of six winners from six to race from Paris Hilton (Pins), the winner of six races including at Riccarton.

There is some serious staying blood in his family which was largely established by the Fells of Fairdale Stud. Paris Hilton’s grandam is the good mare Harp (Sobig) whose best win was in the Hawkes Bay Cup (Gr 3, 2200m) plus a close second in the Auckland Cup (Gr 1, 3200m). Harp’s grandaughter Miltak (McGinty) went one better and won the Auckland Cup plus the New Zealand Oaks (Gr 1, 2400m) and the BMW Stakes (Gr 1, 2400m) in Sydney. Harp’s dam, Chapel Belle (Pakistan II), defied her sire’s propensity for speed and won up to 11 furlongs while her half-brother, Tesla (Bulandshar) also won the Auckland Cup.
