Powerhouse operations Coolmore and Newgate Farm have teamed up to stand classy operator Wodeton (Wootton Bassett) for the 2026 breeding season.

In a statement released on Sunday, Newgate announced the collaboration and revealed the son of Wootton Bassett (Iffraaj) will be retired from racing and introduced on their Hunter Valley farm at a fee of $16,500 (inc GST).

Bred by John Camilleri's Fairway Thoroughbreds, who will also be a co-owner in his future stud career, Wodeton was purchased by Coolmore Australia principal Tom Magnier for $1.6 million at the 2024 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale out of Segenhoe Stud and was stationed at Chris Waller’s base.

What's On

Making an impressive winning debut over 1100 metres at Rosehill, the colt would go on to run third in the Silver Slipper Stakes (Gr 2, 1100m), second in the Todman Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m), and another second placing – by just 0.2 lengths – to Marhoona (Snitzel) in the Golden Slipper (Gr 1, 1200m).

Wodeton rounded out his juvenile season with a fourth placing in the ATC Sires’ Produce Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m).

These performances saw him become the highest-rated two-year-old of his generation by Timeform.

Returning as a three-year-old, the solid run of placings continued, with an excellent runner-up finish in the Golden Rose (Gr 1, 1400m) supported by money finishes in the San Domenico Stakes (Gr 3, 1100m) and Eskimo Prince Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m).

In total, Wodeton made 13 starts for a win and six placings for Coolmore and partners, with over $1.35 million earned in prize-money courtesy of his standout top-level efforts.

Henry Field (Credit: Newgate)

“Chris Waller was adamant from an early stage that Wodeton was one of the best juveniles he has ever trained,” Newgate’s managing director, Henry Field, said.

“As a two-year-old, the stable made it clear in no uncertain terms that he simply breathed different air.

“He demolished a quality field on debut and was denied Golden Slipper glory by the narrowest possible margin. He was the highest-rated colt of his generation and came within a nose of Australian racing immortality.

“In the Golden Slipper itself, he was desperately unlucky. He was held up at a crucial stage before charging home once clear, and there is little doubt that with uninterrupted running he wins the race.

“I feel genuinely honoured that the Magnier family has given us the opportunity to be involved with Wodeton. Coolmore gave me extraordinary opportunities in the early stages of my career, and I will always be grateful for that.

“To now stand a horse of Wodeton’s quality alongside them is incredibly meaningful to me.”

Having been foaled and raised at Segenhoe, Wodeton is the second foal and second winner out of the stakes-winning Exceed And Excel (Danehill) mare Fiera Vista, herself a half-sister to Group 2 winner Empress Rock (Fastnet Rock) from the family of world champion sprinter Silent Witness (El Moxie).

This pedigree, alongside his career CV, has Newgate's stallion director Bruce Slade believing Wodeton is a perfect addition to an already glittering line-up of sires at the farm.

“We couldn’t be more excited to secure Wodeton,” said Slade.

“He was an absolutely sensational yearling and one of the most admired colts to walk through a sales ring that year.

“Physically, he is a magnificent horse and his pedigree is equally compelling. He is by the globally prepotent Wootton Bassett out of an Exceed And Excel mare, whose dam is by Encosta De Lago and from one of John Camilleri’s outstanding families.

“He is the complete package - an elite juvenile, an exceptional physical specimen and a colt with a pedigree that gives him every opportunity to succeed as a commercial stallion.”

Wodeton could prove to be a very big recruit to the stallion ranks for Coolmore, given he is from the first crop of their ill-fated star shuttler Wootton Bassett.

Magnier welcomed the opportunity to continue Coolmore’s association with the colt through his stud career at Newgate.

“There is no doubting Wodeton possessed extraordinary natural ability,” said Magnier.

“He was one of the most beautiful yearlings you could wish to see and, importantly, he is by Wootton Bassett, a stallion who is very close to our hearts.

“Henry has been encouraging us for some time to work together on Wodeton and, given his belief in the horse, the relationship between our farms and our long-standing friendship, we felt this was the perfect opportunity.

“By combining the strengths of both operations, we believe Wodeton will be afforded every opportunity to fulfil his considerable potential as a stallion.”

As well as standing at Newgate for his introductory fee of $16,500, a strictly limited number of lifetime breeding rights will also be made available for Wodeton.

Darley delight as Pinatubo off the mark with first Australian stakes winner

Pinatubo (Credit: Darley)

Darley are confident that now the seal has been broken, much more success is to come for their well credentialed shuttler Pinatubo (Shamardal), following his first Australian stakes winner on Saturday.

Having come close with three black type placegetters alongside four winners to enter the weekend second on the first season sires’ table, Pinatubo opened his stakes winners account when Voynichese won The Show A Heart (Listed, 1500m) at Eagle Farm.

The filly from out of the main stream of Australian racing could be a revelation.

She was bought for just $30,000 from Book 2 of last year’s Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale by Canberra trainer Nick Olive, when offered through breeder Canning Downs’s draft.

After debuting only on May 12 in the modest surrounds of Bathurst with a second over 1100m, she won by 0.31 lengths in another maiden over 1175m at Albury on May 26.

That impressed Olive enough to launch an audacious assault on the Brisbane winter carnival, and a step up to 1500m, just 11 days later. The two-year-old filly made the trip north like a veteran and responded with a powerful win, despite easing to start $17, coming from midfield to score by 1.24 lengths.

After a lengthy wait until June for a first Australian stakes winner to sit with the nine from his first two northern crops, Pinatubo might now have his first elite victory anywhere this Saturday, with Voynichese to contest Eagle Farm’s JJ Atkins (Gr 1, 1600m). Bookmakers wound her in to the fifth line of betting after her Show A Heart success, at $15.

The filly’s impressive victory on Saturday solidified Pinatubo’s hold on what is effectively a race for second on the first season sires’ table, behind tearaway leader Home Affairs (I Am Invincible), sire of Golden Slipper (Gr 1, 1200m) winner Guest House. Pinatubo’s runners have earned $881,975, clear of the $792,685 of the third-placed Wild Ruler (Snitzel).

And with several strong prospects for the spring, Darley are hopeful Pinatubo will continue to build the racetrack momentum to complement his solid results through two years of yearling sales.

But obviously it’s really good for a horse to get a stakes winner in his first crop, as two-year-olds

Alistair Pulford

“We’re obviously delighted that he’s got his first stakes winner,” Darley’s head of stallions Alastair Pulford told ANZ News.

“He’s had plenty of runners who’ve shown a bit, quite a few stakes placegetters and winners, including recently, and there’s a few promising ones heading towards the spring carnival.

“But obviously it’s really good for a horse to get a stakes winner in his first crop, as two-year-olds.

“Hopefully now he just keeps rolling on. Onwards and upwards.”

Aside from Voynichese, Pinatubo has been well represented by Godolphin colt Zambales, a tough competitor whom Anthony and Sam Freedman have trained for seven starts in his first season, all since January 24, and his sire’s highest earner.

The half-brother to star six-time stakes winner Tempted (Street Boss) and four-time black type victor Kallos (Medaglia D’Oro) hasn’t yet won, but has been twice stakes placed, including a 0.06 length second in the VRC Sires’ Produce Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m). Showing versatility, he also ran fourth in two elite events, the Blue Diamond Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) and the ATC Champagne Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m).

Clinton McDonald’s Yulong colt Tales Of Time has run a 0.35 length second in Flemington’s Maribyrnong Plate (Gr 3, 1000m) and won a Werribee maiden by 2.5 lengths from his two starts, while Michael Freedman’s filly Hardanger has been Group 3 placed.

And John Sargent’s filly Global Goal was impressive in claiming the $200,000 Inglis 2YO Challenge (1200m) on Wagga Cup day, beating subsequent Randwick winner Friendly Fire (Farnan) by 1.3 lengths

“The stable has a very high opinion of Global Goal, and she looks like heading to Randwick’s Princess Series in the spring,” Pulford said.

“We at Darley have always liked the Pinatubos we’ve got in training. Zambales has been a very good two-year-old without winning. He’s placed in a lot of good races and was very unlucky in Sires’ Produce at Flemington.

“So Pinatubo has definitely got a few who’ll contest decent races in the spring.”

Pulford said what had become apparent from Pinatubo’s first Australian racing crop was that his offspring may take more time to develop than first thought.

Pinatubo was a star at two, winning his first five starts from early May to October, including the Group 1, 1400m double of the Curragh’s National Stakes and Newmarket’s Dewhurst Stakes.

But, Pulford said, his stock may be hitting their straps a little later, evidenced by the fact three of his four winners have come since May 26.

“He’s had a few winners recently, and now the back end of the season is coming along, they seem to have appreciated a bit of time and they’re starting to show up,” Pulford said.

“It seems that way overseas as well. He was such a good two-year-old himself, and an early two-year-old, that we all expected his progeny to be that as well. But maybe he’s throwing more towards his female line a bit, since they’re indicating they want a bit of time.”

That female side may also be adding stamina. Pinatubo was unbeaten in his seven starts up to 1400m, and ran G1 placings in his other three starts, over 1600 meters. But his dam Lava Flow (Dalakhani) scored her two wins over 2000m and 2200m, and is by a noted stamina sire.

“You’d say Pinatubo’s best trip would have been seven furlongs,” Pulford said. “But his mother was a stayer, and she’s by Dalakhani (Darshaan), so maybe that’s where the stamina is coming from, and that’s been demonstrated in the northern hemisphere.

“There’s a good chance his progeny here will get a trip.”

Pinatubo’s top-rated northern hemisphere horses - the filly Qilin Queen and the colt Saddadd - have won to 2400m and 2000m respectively. His third-best, Komorebi, has won his three races from 1500m-1600m, while No.4 Tipinso has won his five races from 1600m to 2150m.

The nine-year-old Pinatubo covered 130 mares in each of his first two Australian seasons and 90 in his third, all at $55,000, and with an average fertility rate of 78 per cent.

He covered 90 again last year, at $38,500, and has had his fee reduced again - to $27,500 - this spring, which Pulford says could be shown to represent outstanding value.

“He leaves a great, strong-bodied type. If you look at the sales results they continually sell well, and that’s because they’re such good types,” Pulford said of a sire whose yearlings have averaged $167,000 and $125,000 in his first two years at the Australian sales.

It was great for us to top off the day with Bivouac siring the Oaks winner

Alastair Pulford

“People have always liked him as an individual. He’s a beautiful horse himself, and his stock have magnificent temperaments so people like breeding to him. So hopefully he’ll cover a good book this year, and I’m sure Voynichese’s win will help.

“When we set our stud fees for this year, he’d had a winner in New Zealand and a few stakes placegetters in Australia, but hadn’t done enough to hold his fee where it was.

“So he could come out in the spring with a really good horse and look extremely good value.”

While a first season sire’s statistics are naturally limited, Voynichese’s victory again showed the strength of Pinatubo’s sire Shamardal (Giant's Causeway) over the filly’s damsire Redoute’s Choice (Danehill). The nick is running at a hot 30 per cent stakes winners to runners, with three from 10, headed by Shamalia (Shamardal), a dual stakes winner in Sydney.

Meanwhile, Darley were also delighted on Saturday to see another nine-year-old - Bivouac (Exceed And Excel), seize a sizeable lead on the second season sires’ title when Fireball Miss won the Queensland Oaks (Gr 1, 2200m).

While the top of that table has been a congested, four-way affair of late, Bivouac leapt from third to first, with Fireball Miss’s $420,000 first prize-money taking his progeny’s earnings to $5,577,051.

That’s $291,006 more than last week’s pole sitter Wootton Bassett (Iffraaj), who’s just $36,782 ahead of the Vinery Stud stallion he usurped a week earlier, Farnan (Not A Single Doubt).

Darley’s Ghaiyyath (Dubawi) sits fourth, just $73,815 behind Farnan.

“It was great for us to top off the day with Bivouac siring the Oaks winner,” Pulford said of the stallion who’ll stand alongside Pinatubo at Darley Kelvinside this season for $33,000, down from $55,000.

“That’s put him well clear on the second season table, and hopefully he’ll hold on now.”

Still, the late Wootton Bassett has a chance to regain top spot. He’s the only stallion among the quartet with a runner among the 20 nominees for the race representing essentially the last potential windfall of the season for debutant sires - the JJ Atkins - which offers $600,000 to the winner, and $180,000 for second.

And Wootton Bassett’s representative is in the market as the $4.50 second favourite in Stormy Marco, the Chris Waller-Hermitage colt who won Hawkesbury’s prestigious Clarendon Stakes (1400m) on debut at $21, before making ground when a 3.5 length eighth in Queensland’s Sires’ Produce Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m) at his last start.

Morning Briefing

Estadio Mestalla to have blinkers in Stradbroke

Estadio Mestalla (Credit: Sportpix)

Trainer Joe Pride is confident a familiar formula can help Estadio Mestalla (Galileo Gold) make his presence felt in Saturday's Stradbroke Handicap (Gr 1, 1400m) at Eagle Farm. The talented gelding will take an unconventional path into Queensland's premier handicap, contesting an 800-metre barrier trial at Warwick Farm on Tuesday before travelling to Brisbane later in the week and lining up in the Group 1 feature four days later. "I have done it with him twice before. He trialled within the week and won that $300,000 race on Melbourne Cup day, and I did it with him the week he ran second in The Ingham," Pride said. "It's a formula that has worked with him in the past and I'm going to do it again." While stablemate Headley Grange (Exosphere) has attracted plenty of attention following his Kingsford-Smith Cup (Gr 1, 1300m) victory, Pride believes Estadio Mestalla is flying under the radar despite two encouraging runs this campaign. "He was really good at Hawkesbury over the short course [sixth, Gold Rush], and the other day at Scone he was enormous [fourth, Luskin Star Stakes]. He was a bit slow away but gunned it home," Pride said. A key gear change will accompany the gelding's Stradbroke assignment, with blinkers being reapplied on raceday. "I'll put blinkers on him for the Straddie. They're a good gear change for him. He won't wear them in the trial, but he will wear them in the Straddie. He goes well in them." Pride said the gap between runs had been carefully planned and held no concerns. "No problem. He will have had two trials, and it has been one hundred per cent by design," he said. Chad Schofield has been booked for Estadio Mestalla, while stablemates Headley Grange and Private Eye (Al Maher) are also set to represent the Pride stable in the Queensland winter carnival showpiece.

Pride Of Jenni to step up in trip for Q22

Champion mare Pride Of Jenni (Pride Of Dubai) is set to tackle a new challenge when she lines up in Saturday's Q22 (Gr 2, 2200m) at Eagle Farm, her first start beyond 2040 metres. Owner Tony Ottobre has confirmed the multiple Group 1 winner will contest the season-ending weight-for-age feature before heading for a short break ahead of a spring campaign. "She's ticking over," said Ciaron Maher Racing assistant trainer Jack Turnbull. "She's been out on the grass, but she will stay moving into the spring. A mare like her, you can't really stop." The mare heads to Brisbane off a runner-up finish behind Birdman (Free Eagle) in the Doomben Cup (Gr 1, 2000m) and will attempt to add another feature victory to a career that has yielded 13 wins and more than $12.5 million in prize-money. While the extra 200 metres presents an unknown, Turnbull is comfortable with the challenge. "Ultimately, it will be up to Tony and Ciaron, but she is in work and she is rock hard fit, and you don't really have to gallop her or anything," he said. The Q22 is also expected to feature fellow high-profile stayers Half Yours (St Jean) and Vauban (Galiway), adding further intrigue to the Eagle Farm contest. Maher's stable will also be represented in Saturday's Stradbroke Handicap by Another Wil (Street Boss) and Warnie (Highland Reel). "We just need to draw some barriers," Turnbull said. "Another Wil has been good off wide draws. He has to go two weeks, two weeks, but he seems in a pretty good spot. Warnie was good first-up but disappointed second-up. We think back to handicap conditions suits, provided he draws a gate, he can get involved."

Further Queensland assignments await Platinum Pantheon

Promising New Zealand sprinter Platinum Pantheon (Hanseatic) has earned a further stay in Queensland following his strong runner-up performance in Saturday's Queensland Day Stakes (Listed, 1200m) at Eagle Farm. The Lisa Latta-trained three-year-old finished powerfully after settling near the rear of the field, closing to within a half-length of Earn To Burn (Better Than Ready) after encountering traffic in the straight. "He ended up going back, which is where we thought he would be," Latta said. "He had to weave his way through them and didn't quite get to the outside when he needed to, but he finished off fantastic. Mark [Du Plessis, jockey] thinks he is a pretty smart horse." The son of Hanseatic (Street Boss) earned his Queensland opportunity after finishing runner-up in the Cambridge Breeders' Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) at Te Rapa and has now produced encouraging performances in three Australian appearances. Latta believes remaining in Brisbane is the best option for the gelding's continued development. "We would be flat getting into the first Group 1 sprint of the season at the moment, so we are probably better to push forward a little bit on this side and give him a nice spell over here and then bring him back," she said. "There is a nice 1350-metre race at Ipswich in a fortnight and we will look to head there next." Latta said the warmer Queensland conditions have suited the gelding, who is already shaping as a horse capable of returning to the Sunshine State for bigger targets in the future. "He is thriving over here, and the trip will be the making of him," she said. "Hopefully we can come back here next year and aim for some really nice races."

Cartoon Graveyard pounces late in Swan Hill Cup

Consistent gelding Cartoon Graveyard (Turffontein) added another feature victory to his record when storming home to capture Sunday's Swan Hill Cup (1600m) for Tasmanian trainer John Keys and jockey Craig Newitt. Backing up from a luckless second to Jimmy The Bear (Jimmy Creed) at Caulfield, the six-year-old overcame a wide barrier and settled near the tail of the field before Newitt angled him to the outside in the straight. The $50,000 Magic Millions Tasmanian Yearling Sale graduate finished strongly to defeat Fine Future (Fine Needle) by 0.3 lengths, with Electric Impulse (Cable Bay) filling third a further 0.8 lengths behind. "Obviously, when the marble came out and we drew wide, we either had to bite the bullet and go forward or ride him quiet," Newitt told Racing.com. "The beauty about riding for Johnny and Tegan and Scotty Brunton is they don't give you many instructions, so I was able to watch the first half-a-dozen races, and I was happy enough to come wide on him, so I just left him alone. I trusted that he was going to be there for me at the finish, which he was." Newitt felt Cartoon Graveyard had been knocking on the door following his recent Caulfield effort. "He ran super the other day at Caulfield; he should have won. Jimmy The Bear would have come here and been odds-on," he said. "The horse is going really well this preparation and I'm sure he's got plenty more wins in store." Purchased by Brunton Racing and Tasmanian Bloodstock, the son of Turffontein (Johannesburg) has now earned over $500,000 in prize-money. "He's always thereabouts and he's been pretty unlucky since being in Melbourne this time around, so it's good to actually get the job done today," stable representative Tegan Keys said.

Durnan enjoying early time with Malua Racing

Apprentice jockey Holly Durnan believes her recent move to the Leon and Troy Corstens and Will Larkin stable at Flemington is already paying dividends as she looks to build on a breakthrough run of city success. The 21-year-old joined the Malua Racing operation just a week ago after previous stints with Gary Colvin, Mitch Beer and Dwayne Reid, fulfilling a long-held ambition to establish herself in Melbourne. "From when I was in Wagga, I always wanted to come to Melbourne. I've always liked it better down here," Durnan told Racing.com. "I've only been with them a short time, but I love working for the Corstens and Will; they're so relaxed, but at the same time, it's a well-oiled machine." Durnan arrives in Melbourne with momentum firmly on her side after riding winners at three consecutive metropolitan meetings in Victoria. She partnered Jimmy The Bear to victory at Caulfield on May 30, guided Didn't Miss Many (D'Argento) to success at Sandown on Wednesday and then dead-heated aboard Dirnaseer (Ghaiyyath) at Flemington on Saturday. "This whole week has been amazing. To ride at three city meetings in a week and ride a winner at each of them, it was great," she said. "Winning aboard Jimmy The Bear was a real highlight. He's probably the best horse I've ridden and obviously he is trained by Patrick [Payne]. He's such a tough and honest horse." With senior riders often travelling interstate or taking breaks during the winter months, Durnan believes the coming weeks could provide further opportunities, particularly with her valuable three-kilogram claim. "Winter is a great time for someone like me," she said. "I'd love to ride another ten city winners by the end of the calendar year. I think that is achievable and that's my main goal."

Lloyd enjoys double at Doncaster

Australian jockey Zac Lloyd wasted little time making an impact during his overseas riding tour, booting home a double at Doncaster on Saturday less than 24 hours after his first rides in Britain. The 22-year-old, a multiple Group 1-winning rider and Golden Slipper (Gr 1, 1200m)-winning jockey, opened his account aboard Any Which Way (Almanzor) for trainer Michael Bell in a Class 2 Handicap (1m 6.5f) before completing the double on Arctic Dawn (Blue Point) for trainers Daniel and Claire Kubler in a Class 3 Handicap over seven furlongs. Lloyd is spending a month in England before travelling to South Africa for the Durban July (Gr 1, 2200m) at Greyville on July 4 and is currently riding work for leading trainers George Boughey, Charlie Appleby and William Haggas. A highlight of the trip will come later this month when he rides at Royal Ascot. "Royal Ascot is a dream come true and, in my eyes, it's the most prestigious meeting in the world. I'm very excited to compete there," Lloyd told the Racing Post. "I'm just going with the flow and am happy to ride whatever they'd like me to. Whatever they decide is best for me, I'll just do my best." Since arriving in Britain, Lloyd has had six rides over two days at Doncaster for two wins, two seconds and a third, with his only unplaced effort coming aboard a 40/1 outsider.

Fly My Wey on track for Winter Series Final

Fly My Wey (Credit: Race Images)

Consistent gelding Fly My Wey (Sweynesse) boosted his claims for the upcoming The Lawn Shed Winter Series Stayers Final (2100m) with a determined victory in Saturday's Yourride Handicap (2100m) at Ellerslie. Settling worse than midfield after being unable to hold a forward position from the inside draw, the seven-year-old enjoyed a patient ride from Jasmine Fawcett, who bided her time before angling into the clear in the straight. Fly My Wey gradually reeled in the leaders and surged past Drop Of Something (Telperion) inside the final 150 metres before holding off the late challenge of favourite Super Fly (Ghibellines) to score by a half-length. "It always gives you a big thrill when you think a horse can win and it does," Fawcett said. Trainer Mark Brosnan was pleased to see the gelding deliver despite concerns about the rain-affected surface. "It was a brave performance," Brosnan said. "I was pretty confident he would go well on his work on Tuesday morning, but I was a bit sceptical that he might not handle the ground, but he did well." The victory sets Fly My Wey up perfectly for the Winter Series Stayers Final at Ellerslie in a fortnight, where Brosnan hopes the gelding can secure another lucrative payday. "He will come back here in two weeks' time for that bigger race and hopefully he can do it again then," he said. Purchased for just $3,800 via gavelhouse.com in 2020, Fly My Wey has proven a tremendous performer for connections. Out of the four-time winning mare Fly Silca Fly (Hawk Wing), he has now recorded six wins and 16 placings from 60 starts while banking more than NZ$290,000 in prize-money.

86 for Night Of Thunder

Darley’s former shuttler Night Of Thunder (Dubawi) chalked up his 86th individual stakes winner on Sunday when Overnight (3 c ex Bahaama by Anabaa) landed the Prix Ridgway (Listed, 2000m) at Longchamp. Ridden by Maxime Guyon for trainer Andre Fabre, the three-year-old colt ran out a comfortable three-lengths winner over stablemate Focus (Siyouni) with a further three-quarters of a length back to Tonnant (Romanised) in third. Bred and raced by Wertheimer and Frere, Overnight is out of the Listed-winning mare Bahaama (Anabaa) making him a half-brother to stakes winners Stimulation (Deep Impact), Bartaba (Deep Impact) and Hamavi (Dubawi) and from the family of Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe (Gr 1, 2400m) winner Gold River (Riverman). Night Of Thunder, who shuttled to Darley Australia for one season in 2016, is standing at Kildangan Stud for a fee of €200,000 (approx. AU$326,800).

182 for Frankel

Juddmonte’s flagship stallion Frankel (Galileo) sired his 182nd individual stakes winner on Sunday when the Andre Fabre-trained Dispatches (3 f ex Depeche by Dansili) proved too strong for her rivals in the Prix Melisande (Listed, 2000m) at Longchamp. In what was a quickfire stakes double for both trainer and rider Maxime Guyon, the three-year-old filly defeated fellow Juddmonte homebred Maintain (Kingman) by a length and a half. There was a further two and a half lengths back to Ecija (Night Of Thunder) in third. Dispatches is the second foal out of the Dansili (Danehill) mare Depeche, herself an unraced sister to Grade 1 winner Proviso and a half-sister to Group 1 scorer Byword (Peintre Celebre) and Group 2 winner Finche (Frankel). Frankel is standing at Banstead Manor Stud for a fee of £350,000 (approx. AU$661,960).

FR: Nighttime lands Prix Paul de Moussac

Nighttime (3 c Wootton Bassett - Daytime by Frankel) got himself back into the winner’s circle on Sunday when landing the Prix Paul de Moussac (Gr 2, 1400m) at Longchamp. Ridden by Maxime Guyon for trainer Christopher Head, the Wootton Bassett (Ifraaj) colt defeated Go Man (Goken) by three-quarters of a length with a further half-length back to Synaran (Mehmas) in third. The win added to Nighttime’s Group 3 and Listed successes last year.

73 for Camelot

Isaac Newton (3 c ex Etive by Elusive Quality) became the 73rd individual stakes winner for Coolmore stallion Camelot (Montjeu) when narrowly landing Sunday’s Hill Of Tara Stakes (Listed, 1m 1f) at Navan. Ridden by Ryan Moore for trainer Aidan O’Brien, the colt flew home down the outside of his rivals to beat Hotazhell (Too Darn Hot) by a nose with a further neck back to Geryon (Lope De Vega) in third place. Bred by Camas Park, Lynch Bages and Summerhill, Isaac Newton was purchased by M V Magnier for €380,000 at the 2024 Arqana Deauville August Yearling Sale and races for a partnership that includes Derrick Smith, John Magnier, Michael Tabor and Westerberg. A half-brother to winners Scots Pine (Shamardal) and Betty Loch (Pivotal), he is out of the Listed-winning mare Etive (Elusive Quality), herself a half-sister to Breeders' Cup Mile (Gr 1, 8f) winner Master Of The Seas (Dubawi) and out of French 1,000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) runner-up Forth Of Lorne (Danehill). Camelot is standing at Coolmore Stud for a fee of €60,000 (approx. AU$98,040).

164 For Lope de Vega

The Ralph Beckett-trained Venetia (3 f Vivid Diamond by Cape Cross) earned a first stakes success when taking out the Agnes Keyser Fillies’ Stakes (Listed, 1m2f) at Goodwood on Sunday, in the process providing Lope De Vega (Shamardal) with his 164th individual stakes winner. Ridden by Hector Crouch, the Cayton Park Stud-bred and raced filly prevailed by a short-head from Lady Dora Mae (Space Blues) with Della Pace (Camelot) a further neck away in third. Venetia had broken her maiden over 1m2f at Ascot on her previous start before finishing runner-up in a fillies’ handicap at Goodwood last month. She is the second foal out of Vivid Diamond, a Listed-winning daughter of Cape Cross (Green Desert). Vivid Diamond is herself out of Listed winner Pretty Diamond (Hurricane Run), from the family of Group 1-placed Golden Arrow (Danehill). Lope De Vega stands at Ballylinch Stud for a 2026 fee of €200,000 (approx. AU$351,000).

GER: Back-to-back Group 2s for Alleno

The Marcel Weiss-trained Alleno (5 h Nathaniel - Alandia by Adlerflug) added another Group 2 success to his record when taking out the Grosser Preis von Tattersalls (Gr 2, 2200m) Baden-Baden on Sunday. Ridden by Sibylle Vogt, the Gestut Ittlingen-owned and Gestut Hof Ittlingen-bred horse backed up his wide-margin win in last month’s Sauren Dachfonds Preis (Gr 2, 2400m) at Cologne, defeating Hochkonig (Polish Vulcano) by three-quarters of a length, with Wilko (Mastercraftsman) filling third a further length and a quarter behind. Alleno has now won three of his 12 starts and earned €223,046, with his record also including a second in last year’s Gran Premio del Jockey Club (Gr 2, 2400m) at San Siro.

First for Maxfield

Englishman (3 c ex In It For The Gold by Speightstown) provided his sire Maxfield (Street Sense) with a first Grade 1 win when taking out the Woody Stephens Stakes (Gr 1, 7f) at Saratoga on Saturday. The Cherie DeVaux-trained colt proved an emphatic winner of the Grade 1, pressing the speed under rider Jose Ortiz before taking control on the turn and drawing clear in the straight, defeating Pat Day Mile Stakes (Gr 2, 8f) winner Crude Velocity (Beau Liam) by five and three-quarter lengths. Obliteration (Violence) finished a nose further away in third. His winning time of 1:20.40 equalled the Saratoga seven-furlong track record set by Darby Creek Road (Roberto) in 1978. Bred in Kentucky by Fifth Avenue Bloodstock, Englishman was a US$400,000 purchase by Mayberry Farm at the 2024 Keeneland September Yearling Sale and is raced by the C R K Stable. He is out of winning Speightstown (Gone West) mare In For The Gold, herself a daughter of Grade 1-placed mare All Due Respect (Value Plus). The victory also made Englishman the fourth individual stakes winner for Maxfield, who stands at Darley’s Jonabell Farm for a fee of US$50,000 (approx. AU$70,900).

First for The Big Beast

The David Fawkes-trained Reef Runner (5 g ex Paradise Bay by Blame) provided The Big Beast (Yes It’s True) with his first Grade 1 winner when landing the Jaipur Stakes (Gr 1, 5.5f) at Saratoga on Saturday. Ridden by Irad Ortiz Jr, the five-year-old raced prominently before being switched right over a furlong out, taking the lead inside the final 110 yards and keeping on to defeat last year’s winner Ag Bullet (Twirling Candy) by half-a-length. John The Beer Man (More Than Ready) finished a further neck away in third. Bred and raced by Alex and Joann Lieblong, Reef Runner was returning to the US after two strong international efforts having won the Group 2 1351 Turf Sprint (1400m) at Riyadh and coming fourth at Meydan in the Al Quoz Sprint (Gr 1, 1200m). The Jaipur victory also secured him a fees-paid berth in the Breeders’ Cup Sprint (Gr 1, 6f) at Keeneland. Out of the winning Blame (Arch) mare Paradise Bay, he is a brother to stakes scorer Big Paradise. The Big Beast stands at McDowell Farm in Arkansas for a fee of US$2,000 (approx. AU$3,050).

US: Nysos snares second Grade 1 in Metropolitan Handicap

Nysos (5 h Nyquist - Zetta Z by Bernardini) returned from his Saudi Arabian adventure with a dominant victory in the Metropolitan Handicap (Gr 1, 8f) at Saratoga on Saturday. Making his first start since finishing runner-up in the Saudi Cup (Gr 1, 1800m) on February 14, the Bob Baffert-trained five-year-old settled off a strong pace before unleashing a powerful finishing burst under Flavien Prat to defeat Knightsbridge (Nyquist) by four lengths, with Journalism (Curlin) a further three-quarters of a length back in third. His winning time of 1:34.85 was just fractions outside the track record. The victory secured Nysos an automatic berth into the Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile (Gr 1, 8f) – a race he won last year – through the Breeders' Cup Challenge Series, although connections are reportedly considering a tilt at the Breeders' Cup Classic (Gr 1, 10f) later this year. The Pacific Classic (Gr 1, 10f) at Del Mar is expected to be his next major target. Bred in Kentucky by Susie Atkins, Nysos is out of the Bernardini (A.P. Indy) mare Zetta Z and was purchased for US$550,000 at the 2023 OBS Spring Sale of Two-Year-Olds in Training. He now races for Baoma Corp in partnership with Coolmore principals Susan Magnier, Michael Tabor and Derrick Smith.

Ricky Yiu saddles 1,100th Hong Kong winner, Caspar Fownes edges further ahead in trainers’ championship

Leo Schlink

Ricky Yiu (Credit: HKJC)

Ricky Yiu joined an illustrious band of Hong Kong trainers with Chill Buddy’s (Flying Artie) victory under Joao Moreira in the Class 3 HKU Jockey Club Student Villages Handicap (1200m) at Sha Tin on Sunday, becoming only the fifth horseman to saddle 1,100 winners in the jurisdiction.

Famed for his association with Hong Kong Triple Crown winner Voyage Bubble (Deep Field) and crack sprinters Sacred Kingdom (Encosta De Lago), Fairy King Prawn (Danehill), Amber Sky (Exceed And Excel) and Ultra Fantasy (Encosta De Lago), Yiu joined John Moore (1,735 wins), John Size (1,659) Tony Cruz (1,611) and Caspar Fownes (1,227) in a select group to reach the landmark.

Yiu, 68, has snared most of the city’s feature races and claimed the Hong Kong trainers’ championship in 2019/20.

“I've been training here for over 30 years, so for the period of time I've been a trainer, I can make it there. If I only had 20 years, I wouldn't have made it,” Yiu said before crowning a memorable meeting with Chill Easy’s convincing victory in the Class 3 HKU Jockey Club Tower Handicap (1400m) under Jerry Chau.

Formerly known as Storm Piece when trained by Ger Lyons in Ireland, the Night Of Thunder (Dubawi) gelding won at Gowran Park and Naas before transferring to Yiu. Chill Easy earned a PP Bonus of HK$1.5 million (approx. AU$269,760) in a slick time of 1m 21.17s.

Yiu’s 1,100th success came as Fownes tightened his grip on the 2025/26 trainers’ championship by extending his lead in the standings to four wins over Mark Newnham with the triumph of Love Together (Capitalist) in the Class 3 HKU Foundation Handicap (1000m) under Moreira, who has now ridden 12 winners from the past six fixtures.

With only ten meetings left in the campaign, Fownes has 61 wins from Newnham (57), Danny Shum (57), Francis Lui (51) and David Hayes (50).

“It was quite exciting because we fancied it, actually,” Fownes said after Love Together’s success. “We thought the horse was going really good, and he deserved to win. He's been racing really well for a three-year-old all season, mixing it at both tracks.

“So, it's nice when you get it right and when they win by those margins [a short-head]. When you're fighting out a championship, this is where it comes down to, where we need them.”

Lui remains in the championship fray after the impressive win of Hot Delight (Too Darn Hot) in the Class 2 Hong Kong Jockey Club Scholarships Handicap (1200m) under Vincent Ho.

Settling midfield, the three-year-old forged over the final 400 metres in 22.93s to defeat Magic Control (Sioux Nation), Public Attention (Written Tycoon) and Group 1 winner Victor The Winner (Toronado) in 1m 08.63s to claim a PPG bonus of HK$1 million (approx. AU$179,840) and improve his overall record to four wins from five starts.

Lui will target next season’s Four-Year-Old Classic Series with the Too Darn Hot (Dubawi) gelding.

“If he can improve, I think he has very good potential. I think we can plan backwards from the Classic Series now - he's our first choice,” Lui said. “He's an honest horse and I think his quality is very good. Vincent knows him really well and he got a good position and had him travelling well. Vincent said he was really happy with how he performed.”

Hayes slotted his 50th victory for the season when Leaping Star (Starspangledbanner) broke through at his 12th start to claim the Class 4 University Hall Handicap (1800m, dirt). Formerly known as Scott Key when trained by Andrew Slattery in Ireland, the Starspangledbanner (Choisir) gelding had won at Gowran Park and Galway before export to Hong Kong.

Chau boosted his hopes of winning the Tony Cruz Award for the first time as leading homegrown jockey with a double, having also prevailed on Mark Newnham’s Ace (Tivaci) in the Class 4 HKU Heritage Handicap (1600m).

Chau’s double left him on 44 wins for the campaign and holding a 12-win lead over Ho (32).

“It’s [potential victory in the Tony Cruz Award] getting more positive and I’m just trying to give the horses every chance and give my best to every horse.” Chau said.

Leading Dragon (D’Argento) impressed in winning the Class 4 Hong Kong University Alumni Association Challenge Cup Handicap (1200m) for Pierre Ng. Ridden by Andrea Atzeni, the three-year-old led from start to finish to score in 1m 09.80s.

Ethan Brown notched his first win at Sha Tin when Dennis Yip-trained Top To Sky (El Roca) held off Winning Machine (Lean Mean Machine) to land the Class 5 HKU Business School And Faculty Of Engineering Handicap (1400m).

“I’ve come close [to winning at Sha Tin] a couple of times, but it’s certainly good to get the monkey off the back,” Brown said. “It’s tough, but we’re persisting and getting support from plenty of trainers and it’s good to get a winner today to keep the ball rolling.”

Yip sealed a brace with three-year-old Master Payment’s (Hanseatic) all-the-way victory under Zac Purton in the Class 4 HKU Facilities Of Dentistry And Social Sciences Handicap (1200m).

Chris So’s Firefoot (Shooting To Win) was rewarded for his consistency this season – the gelding had finished second on four occasions and third twice – with victory in the Class 5 HKU Facilities Of Arts And Education Handicap (1800m, dirt) under well-judged Karis Teetan ride, while Cody Mo saddled his 100th career winner when Honorary (All Too Hard) struck under Alexis Badel in the Class 4 HKU Faculties Of Law And Medicine Handicap (1400m).

Hong Kong racing continues at Happy Valley on Wednesday night.
