Brave Joliestar runs desperately close third as Almeraq springs surprise in Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes

In what was yet another spectacular finish to a feature race at Royal Ascot this week, the William Haggas-trained Almeraq (Dark Angel) spoiled the international party on Saturday when he flew home to deny Japanese raider Satono Reve (Lord Kanaloa) and Chris Waller’s admirable mare Joliestar (Zoustar) in the Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes (Gr 1, 6f).

Sent off as a 25-1 chance under Tom Marquand, who was replacing Shadwell’s injured retained rider Jim Crowley, the four-year-old colt proved he was no back number as he made the transition from a last-start Listed win to Group 1 heights in great style.

Approaching the final furlong, it seemed as though James McDonald and Joliestar may just strike for the mass Australian contingent that have once again made the much-appreciated journey over to the UK for this week’s five-day bonanza.

What's On

However, Noriyuki Hori’s Satono Reve appeared on the scene bidding to go one better than his second placing behind Lazzat (Territories) in last year’s renewal and the pair battled well inside the final furlong.

Just as it seemed that it would be a head-bob between the pair, Haggas’ Almeraq came with a wet sail to deny both, eventually scoring by a nose from the Japanese raider in a nailbiting end to the final Group 1 of Royal Ascot 2026.

A naturally humble Marquand was quick to pay tribute to Crowley, who was at the track in attendance.

"He had a horrific fall at York at the back-end of last year and your thoughts are obviously with Jim [Crowley] who's not managed to make it back in time for horses like this and that's tough,” the winning rider said.

“He [Almeraq] did an exceptional job today of getting himself up from a crowded position that he wasn't enjoying all too much, his confidence is still probably building a bit.

“It probably made him look like he was in trouble a long way out, he wasn't really, he just didn't know how to wedge himself back in.

"We had Tiber Flow in a very similar situation a couple of years ago and he was the same, took him a couple of runs to just build confidence.

“He obviously had that run at Salisbury where he was down the inside and that would have done him a lot of good but I think, if anything today, he'll realise that it's not all as scary as it might have been at York that day. He's a wonderfully talented horse.

“Andrew Tinkler rides him every day, everyone knows him from his jumping days. Fantastic that they've got the horse back to this level.

"I think he's the epitome of Somerville Lodge, they give horses time and they're so patient with him. To have Sheikha Hissa here today is wonderful and I hadn't ridden Somerville Lodge a Group 1 Royal Ascot winner, so that was important.

“Thrilled to do so on a horse like him that shows what they really do."

Crowley, who had ridden Almeraq in four of his six starts prior to Saturday’s contest, said: "Great to see the horse win. Great training performance to get him back. Obviously, he hit the ground that day the same as me, so a marvellous training performance to get him back."

Haggas also referenced the challenge of getting Almeraq back from his fall at York last year.

“As you know, he had a fall at York last year and poor Jim [Crowley] got injured,” Haggas said.

“He took a long time to come back and it’s been gently, gently this spring. He won nicely at Salisbury, but this is a completely different jump in class and he’s managed to cope with it.

“He’s a beautiful horse, we’ve always loved him, a big, strong, powerful horse, and I think he’ll get better, because he’s pretty lightly raced.

“I am thrilled for Shadwell. I’ve been involved with them for quite some time now, and to have a Group 1 winner for them on the biggest stage is terrific. It’s very hard for all of us [to win here], everyone is trying to compete, and to win is great.

“He was pretty shook up after York. It’s quite hard to fall in a race like that at speed, and for a young horse, going at speed, it was difficult, but we gave him a lot of time.

“There was no need to get him ready for the autumn, and this has proved it and now it’s onwards and upwards. He’s fine now.

“I thought this ground might be a bit quick for him; he’s got big feet on him, but it clearly wasn’t. The straight track here, slow-ground horses can cope with fast ground.

“I’m not saying he’s a slow-ground horse, he was terribly impressive one day on slow ground at Ayr. But he’s taken his form to a new level and we’re absolutely delighted with him.”

Chris Waller was on hand shortly after the finish to comment on his mare’s excellent performance.

“I’m just delighted that she turned up,” Waller said. “She performed very well and fought out a great finish, which was typical of the week.

“We’ve seen some great finishes, and unfortunately that was one of them and we just missed out. But it was just an honour to be here.

“It was important coming into the race to make sure  that she brought her Australian form here and stood it up, and she really did that. We didn’t win today but she’s certainly got her admirers and that’s what international racing is all about.

“I thought we had to ask her a little bit earlier than I’d have liked. It would have been nice to have put a length on them, so I knew it was going to be tough the last 400 metres. She was brave, and it was literally just the last 20 or 30 yards. It was a great run.”

The Bjorn Baker-trained Overpass (Vancouver), who was backing up four days after running third in the King Charles III Stakes (Gr 1, 5f) on Tuesday, held a prominent position throughout the early part of the race but eventually faded to finish 13th of the 18 runners.

Royal Ascot Briefing

18 for Dark Angel

Yeomanstown Stud stallion Dark Angel (Acclamation) chalked up his 18th individual elite-level winner on Saturday when Almeraq (4 c ex Manaajim by Muhaarar) landed the Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes (Gr 1, 6f) at Royal Ascot. Bred and raced by Shadwell Estate, Almeraq is the first foal out of the unraced Muhaarar (Oasis Dream) mare Manaajim, herself a half-sister to Group 1 winner Fairyland (Kodiac) and Australian Group 2 scorer Now Or Never (Bushranger) being out of an unraced half-sister to Group 1 winner Dream Ahead (Diktat). Dark Angel stood the 2026 northern hemisphere breeding season for a fee of €45,000 (approx. AU$73,670).

31 for Havana Grey

Orthodox (2 c ex Heartwarming by Showcasing) became the 31st individual stakes winner for his sire Havana Grey (Havana Gold) when producing an impressive winning performance in Saturday’s Norfolk Stakes (Gr 2, 5f) at Royal Ascot. Ridden by Rossa Ryan for trainer Clive Cox, the colt made relentless progress entering the final furlong and stayed on powerfully to draw three and a half lengths clear of runner-up El Floridita in a one-two for the Whitsbury Manor Stud stallion. There was a further neck back to Mussab (Ten Sovereigns) in third place. "He won at Salisbury and that was exciting but we were only scratching the surface and since then, he's just surprised me the way he's gone with older horses; he's been amazing and he's just really, really special,” Cox, who was registering his tenth Royal Ascot winner, said. “I would say this horse is pretty special. His auntie, Heartache, won the Queen Mary for us and that was a special day but this fellow's the next level. He'll go to six furlongs, I don't think that's a problem. Reckless Abandon went from here to the Robert Papin which was five and a half in the old days but that is six now. The five furlong options tend to dry up a little bit; I think he'll get six quite cosily. He's just so talented and so fast. His work at home, I thought the guys riding the lead horses were getting it wrong a few times but clearly not. I think six will be within his compass very easily, he's just a really, really nice horse.” A half-brother to winner Hello Sweetheart (Frankel), Orthodox is the third foal out of the Listed-placed winner Heartwarming (Showcasing), herself a sister to Group-placed winner Unbreak My Heart and a half-sister to Group 2 scorer Heartache (Kyllachy). Havana Grey stood the 2026 northern hemisphere breeding season for a private fee.

Giavellotto lands huge hard-fought Hardwicke success

The Marco Botti-trained Giavellotto (7 h Mastercraftsman - Gerika by Galileo) claimed one of the biggest wins of his career at Royal Ascot on Saturday when toughing out success in the Hardwicke Stakes (Gr 2, 1m 4f).

In what was a Group 1 contest in all but name, the seven-year-old entire battled gamely inside the final furlong and a half to grab classy mare Kalpana (Study Of Man) on the line by a short-head.

“I’m delighted – about time I got on the scoresheet," Murphy, who was bagging his first win of the week, said.

"I’ve tried not to pity myself all week; this is just horses running round a field, obviously on a big occasion, but there are far greater things happening in the world. Try to keep a sense of perspective.

“I did think we’d get there. We went even enough, and the last half-furlong here is the slowest, so I felt that if I left my stick down until late, we might win. He’s a very honest horse and loves fast ground. That’s his set-up – a mile and a half, fast ground and plenty of argy-bargy."

Having finished first and second in the last two runnings of the Hong Kong Vase (Gr 1, 2400m) in December, Botti revealed that a trip back for that race would be the plan.

“When he got upsides I thought we were not going to win because the filly [Kalpana] just keeps finding, but he’s an incredible horse,” Botti said. “He’s taken us around the world, and then to win at Royal Ascot - you can't ask any more than that. He’s an unbelievable horse.

“The quality of the Hardwicke Stakes is such that we knew it was going to be Group 1 level, but he’s never let us down. He was a bit warm beforehand, but that’s just him. He winds himself up a little bit beforehand but in the race he’s always given his best. He’s tough.

“I don’t think we’ll be back for the King George because later in the season we want to go back to Hong Kong. We haven’t actually entered him, because we want to keep him fresh. He likes travelling, and that I think will be the priority.”

There was a further length and three-quarters back to another classy operator, Resolute Racing’s Goliath (Adlerflug), in third place, who was challenging inside the final furlong before his rider Mickael Barzalona lost a stirrup and narrowly avoided being unshipped.

"I was trying to come beside Oisin easily because my horse likes to feel he is comfortable and when I tried to put my feet backwards to squeeze him with my heels, my stirrup just got blocked with my girth, my feet were backwards and I lost my iron on the right side,” Barzalona said.

“It's nobody's fault, I couldn't imagine it was going to happen at that point of the race, I wasn't moving on him.”

Incredible week for J-Mac as he lands third winner aboard Lost Boys

James McDonald has had a real week to remember at Royal Ascot as he rode his third winner of the five-day extravaganza aboard the David Menuisier-trained Lost Boys (Night Of Thunder). The son of Night Of Thunder (Dubawi) came home with a strong late finish to deny Amadeus Mozart (Wootton Bassett) by a half-length with a further three-quarters of a length back to the Australian Bloodstock-owned Perisher (Australia) in third place. The win added to McDonald’s wins aboard Map Of Stars (Sea The Stars) in the Wolferton Stakes (Listed, 1m 2f) on Tuesday and Opportunity (Frankel) in Friday’s Duke of Edinburgh Stakes (1m 4f). "It was a pretty messy, stop-start race. I never got a really good pitch until heading out of Swinley Bottom and then he relaxed well to his credit,” McDonald said. “For a young and immature horse, he's got a bundle of talent; he's a very good horse. I think so [that he's a Group horse]. He gave me a really nice feel, probably the feel of the week; I've ridden some really nice horses this week for Wathnan and he might be the best of them. I'm still hurting from that [Joliestar's defeat] but we're lucky to be here, we're lucky to be competing and riding really nice horses for Wathnan. It's a bit like popping a balloon; everyone is up and about and as soon as they cross the line, the balloon has just gone but that's racing, you can't win every time. You come here to the other side of the world, Chris Waller and his team did a marvellous job and so proud of the connections for having a go and Chris for bearing it, albeit it's heartbreaking, that's what competition is all about. I'm in one of the best positions of all time, I'm very grateful for it. To be riding under James Doyle this week has been special, I've had a great week for Wathnan and to come over for Chris Waller who is my greatest supporter has meant the world to me."

Thesecretadversary lands biggest career success in Jersey Stakes

Having notched up his maiden Royal Ascot winner on Thursday when Nola Soul (Justify) landed the Chesham Stakes (Listed, 7f), trainer Fozzy Stack doubled his tally at the royal meeting when Thesecretadversary (3 c St Mark’s Basilica - Too Soon To Panic by Gleneagles) scored in Saturday’s Jersey Stakes (Gr 3, 7f). Ridden by Seamie Heffernan, who was also aboard Nola Soul, the colt hit the front inside the final two furlongs and was made to battle to deny late challenger Take Charge Star (Starspangledbanner) by a neck – winning as a 20-1 shot. There was a further four and a half lengths back to Morris Dancer (Palace Pier) in third. "He put in a huge performance in two Classics when things didn't go his way and he had a three-pound penalty,” Stack said. “It wasn't a surprise to me, it was a surprise how much he drifted actually. Ninety per cent of the horses in the fields here are good horses so they just need to turn up on the day and everything to go right. It's lovely to get one [winner], two is unbelievable and I'm so pleased for Mrs Rupert and the Magnier family, they've been great supporters, we go back a long way with the two of them; it's great you know."

Improving Double Rush lands the Wokingham

Double Rush (Blue Point) made it three consecutive handicap wins on Saturday when narrowly landing the Wokingham Stakes (6f) at Royal Ascot. Ridden by Shane Foley for trainer Andrew Balding, the four-year-old son of Blue Point (Shamardal) kept on well down the centre of the track to hold on from the fast-finishing Completely Random (Havana Grey) by a head. There was a further length back to Soldier’s Tree (Soldier’s Call) in third. "Charlie [Hills] really rated him and he said to me when he came to us, he thought he was really good and he's right, he's a very good horse,” Balding said. “He's a top man isn't he? It happens, I feel sorry for him but it's very much our gain. Shane gave him a peach of a ride and I'd like to think there's more to come, exciting horse. He's got the class to travel and it's not easy to win these big handicaps with high weights but he's done it really well." Double Rush runs in the silks of Yuesheng Zhang’s Ace Stud and was bred by Yulong.

Illinois bounces back to take out Queen Alexandra Stakes

Having finished runner-up in last year’s Ascot Gold Cup (Gr 1, 2m 4f), the Aidan O’Brien-trained Illinois (Galileo) bounced back from a lacklustre performance in the Coronation Cup (Gr 1, 1m 4f) on June 6 to take out Saturday’s Queen Alexandra Stakes (2m 5.5f) – the final race of the week at Royal Ascot. Ridden by Ryan Moore, who again finished the week as the top jockey, for trainer Aidan O’Brien, who also finished the royal meeting as leading trainer, the five-year-old entire stayed on well down the far-side rail to deny late finisher French Master (Frankel) by a neck. There was a further two and three-quarter lengths back to Mr Hollywood (Iquitos) in third.

Parr receives 20-day ban for Tuesday’s Overpass ride

Jockey Josh Parr has been handed a 20-day suspension and fined £1,250 after breaching the UK whip rules at Royal Ascot this week. Parr rode Overpass (Vancouver) to finish third in Tuesday's King Charles III Stakes (Gr 1, 5f), and was found "to have used his whip three times above the permitted level of six from approximately one and a half furlongs out". The suspension was doubled to 20 days on account of the King Charles being a Class 1 race, with Parr ruled out from July 3-11 inclusive and July 13-23 inclusive.

Morning Briefing

Australia

Third for Pierata

Bjorn Baker’s in-form gelding Midnight Dynamite (Pierata) continued his rich vein of form with a dominant victory in Saturday’s Civic Stakes (Listed, 1400m) at Randwick, registering his first black-type success and third for his sire Pierata. Winner of three of his previous four starts, Midnight Dynamite started favourite after dropping 5kg from his last-start second to fellow Civic Stakes runner Cool Jakey (Pierro). Settled midfield by Jason Collett, Midnight Dynamite tracked into the race strongly before reeling in leader Whinchat (Russian Revolution), who had set a solid tempo in front. The four-year-old hit the lead inside the final 100 metres and pulled clear to score by more than a length and a half, with Whinchat holding second ahead of Cool Jakey. “It was a great trip and he ran so well,” Baker said. “We've got a pretty special horse here in Midnight Dynamite. He is putting together a marvellous record for Darby Racing and he was dominant today. He's been a horse who has surprised us, just how well he is going and how he keeps improving.” Baker, who returned from England on Thursday after Overpass (Vancouver) finished third in the King Charles III Stakes (Gr 1, 1000m) at Royal Ascot, believes Midnight Dynamite still has further improvement to come. “When he gets in better grade, if he ever hits a really wet track, he's going to be very tough to beat.” The Winter Stakes (Gr 3, 1400m) at Rosehill on July 4 is likely to be his next target. Bred by Rheinwood Pastoral Co, Midnight Dynamite has now won eight of 23 starts and earned more than $600,000 in prizemoney. He is the first stakes winner among four winners out of Al Maher mare Talented Miss, a sister to stakes placed Acouplamas, the dam of ATC Derby (Gr 1, 2400m) winner Quick Thinker (So You Think). Rheinwood purchased Talented Miss in foal to Shalaa at the 2018 Magic Millions Broodmare Sale from the Willow Park draft. The Hunter Valley vendor has been a happy hunting ground for Rheinwood who also purchased the dam of Private Harry (Harry Angel) from the same draft and Electric Charge (Charge Forward), the dam of Libertad (I Am Invincible), two years prior.

Midnight Dynamite was a $48,000 purchase by Darby out of the Inglis HTBA Sale from Widden Stud. Pierata will stand at Yulong this spring for $33,000 (inc GST).

Five for Divine Prophet

Highview Stud stallion Divine Prophet added a fifth individual stakes winner to his record when Soothsayer (Divine Prophet) produced a powerful finishing burst to capture the Eye Liner Stakes (Listed, 1350m) at Ipswich on Saturday. The victory capped a remarkable comeback for the six-year-old, who spent almost three years on the sidelines after suffering a serious tendon injury. Stakes placed as a three-year-old in the Gold Coast Guineas (Gr 3, 1200m) and Gunsynd Classic (Gr 3, 1600m), Soothsayer resumed in April and has now won two of his three starts this preparation. Ridden by Daniel Moor, Soothsayer settled near the tail from a wide draw before unleashing a strong finish to overhaul La Roja (I Am Invincible) and Esjay (Rothsay) late, scoring by just under half a length. Stable representative Lee Freedman said the gelding could now be aimed at higher targets in the spring. “I always thought he'd be a good horse for a race like the Epsom, so that may be the race you see him in,” Freedman said. “We wanted to try to qualify him for The Big Dance, but that might go out of the window because he'll probably have too much weight.” Moor praised the training effort behind the horse's return. “He's flying this horse, and what an achievement by the team to get him back in such good order,” the jockey said. Purchased for just $20,000 from Alexia Fraser Bloodstock at the 2021 Magic Millions Gold Coast March Yearling Sale by Dream Thoroughbreds and Lee Freedman Racing, Soothsayer has now won seven of 19 starts and earned more than $580,000. A full brother to leading New Zealand sire Proisir, Divine Prophet relocated to Highview from Australia in 2023. His oldest New Zealand-bred progeny will race as two-year-olds in the 2026-27 season. His stakes winners are headed by Group 2 winners See You In Heaven, Generosity and Promitto, along with Listed winners Fortunate Kiss and now Soothsayer. Divine Prophet stand at Highview Stud this season for NZ$5,000.

82 for Zoustar

Chris Munce added another chapter to his Ipswich Cup story on Saturday when he combined with son Corey to win the $250k Ipswich Cup (Listed, 2150m) with Kaluakoi (Zoustar). Munce first claimed the race as a jockey aboard Oompala (Kampala) in 1994 before training Smart Meteor (Smart Missile) to victory in 2022. Saturday’s success marked his second victory as a trainer and first in partnership with Corey. “To be able to ride a winner and now train two, one with Corey, it's a great thrill,” Munce said. Kaluakoi led throughout under apprentice Emily Lang and fought strongly to defeat Encoder (Encryption) by three-quarters of a length, with Sun Worshipper (Sun City) a further 1.5 lengths away in third. Munce admitted he had concerns about the gelding stepping straight to a staying trip without a middle-distance run this preparation but was reassured during the race. “When he got past the winning post the first time, I thought he was going to be hard to beat because he relaxed lovely,” he said. Lang celebrated her fifth stakes success and credited Munce’s instructions to ride positively. “He didn't want the horse ridden pretty,” Lang said. “When you get opportunities from a stable like Chris and Corey Munce, it makes all the difference.”
Passed in at the Inglis Easter Yearling Sale, Kaluakoi had three previous trainers before arriving at the Munce stable in Queensland last year. Even then, he was offered through Bloodstockauction in early February this year and sold for $137,500. Racing in the colours of Flying Start Syndications, the gelding has rewarded his various connections with seven wins, five placings and more than $445,000 in prizemoney from 25 starts. Bred by Emmanuel Bloodstock and raised at Newhaven Park who took him to Easter, Kaluakoi is the first stakes winner amongst 10 winners produced by the stakes-placed US import Fantasy Gal (USA) (Saarland). He was the eleventh foal out of the mare. Kaluakoi is the 82nd stakes winner for champion sire Zoustar (Northern Meteor), who will stand the upcoming breeding season at Widden Stud for a fee of $275,000 (inc GST).

Naifah adds second stakes win in Gai Waterhouse Classic

Progressive filly Naifah (I Am Invincible) continued her rise through the ranks when she led throughout to win Saturday’s Gai Waterhouse Classic (Listed, 1200m) at Ipswich. A three-quarter sister-in-blood to dual Group 1 winner Charm Stone (I Am Invincible), Naifah was purchased by Silverdale Farm and Andrew Williams Bloodstock for $400,000 from the 2025 Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale after being offered by her breeder, Emirates Park. Trained by Tony and Calvin McEvoy for her first three starts where she picked up black type, Naifah was transferred to Mick Price and Michael Kent Jr post sale and has flourished under their care. After capturing the Proud Miss Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) in Adelaide last month, she backed up with a dominant display in Queensland. Ridden by Emily Lang, Naifah crossed from a wide draw to take up the running and was never headed, kicking clear in the straight to score by a length from Manolo Bling (Grunt), with Silver Wedding (Zoustar) claiming valuable black type for the first time in third. The victory capped a memorable day for Lang, who earlier won the Ipswich Cup aboard Kaluakoi (Zoustar). “I couldn't have pictured a better day,” Lang said. “It's hard to get those opportunities but when you do, you hope to keep the ball rolling. I thought I might've fired her up a touch too much, but at the end of the day she had the class edge over her rivals and was just too good.” Naifah has now won three races and been placed four times from 13 starts, with earnings surpassing $300,000. She is the first foal from Najmah (Snitzel), a metropolitan-winning half-sister to Group 1 winner Charm Stone (I Am Invincible) and stakes winner Najmaty (I Am Invincible), from the Group 3 winner Najoom (Northern Meteor). Naifah is one of 11 stakes winners this season for champion sire I Am Invincible (Invincible Spirit), who will stand at Yarraman Park this spring for $220,000 (inc GST).

Kosciuszko beckons for progressive Chains Of Love

Promising filly Chains Of Love (I Am Invincible) is on track for a spring tilt at the $2 million The Kosciuszko after producing an impressive victory in the Highway Handicap (1200m) at Randwick on Saturday. Prepared by Paul Messara, the daughter of Thousand Guineas (Gr 1 1600m) winner Stay With Me (Street Cry) herself a daughter of Miss Finland (Redoute’s Choice), was having just her fifth start and bounced back from a midfield finish in the Queensland Day Stakes (Listed, 1200m) at Eagle Farm. Despite drawing wide, Chains Of Love overcame the obstacle with the aid of a well-judged ride from Aaron Bullock before proving too strong late. “He put her in a position to win the race, and she was too good late,” Messara said. “She’s still learning her craft, but she’s progressive.” Messara said the filly is likely to head to Victoria for next month’s Creswick Sprint Series Final (Listed, 1200m) at Flemington before being freshened for a Kosciuszko campaign. “There is a stakes race for three-year-olds in Melbourne in two weeks down the straight, so that could be a possibility,” he said. “Then we’ll probably give her a little let-up and go for the Kosi. I thought she was a Kosciuszko type.” Messara also provided an update on talented juvenile Cormier (Maurice), who finished runner-up to Tron Bolt (Toronado) in the JJ Atkins Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) at Eagle Farm last weekend. “He’s great. He’s having a little break, and he will be back for a Golden Rose prep,” Messara said.

Ice Kool continues rise through the grades

Promising sprinter Ice Kool (Zoustar) maintained his impressive record at Randwick on Saturday, overcoming his inexperience to claim the Ensure Workplace Risk Solutions Handicap (1000m). The three-year-old was slow to begin before being forced to work early to settle on the speed, but still proved too strong under 60kg, defeating Petticoat (Better Than Ready) by half a length, with Teylu (D’Argento) a long head away in third. The victory was Ice Kool’s fourth from five starts taking his earnings to almost $450k and further underlining the talent trainer David Pfieffer believes the gelding possesses. “He makes it hard for himself,” Pfieffer said. “He's slow out of the gates and then has to use himself to muster speed. He's still ironing out his race craft and has to get those one-percenters right. When he does that, he's going to keep improving.” Pfieffer believes Ice Kool has the potential to develop into a carnival-class performer and is considering a spring campaign in Melbourne after a short break. “We might give him a let-up and then poke around at carnival time,” he said. “I’m contemplating going to Melbourne because he’s not at the level of those Sydney lead-up races yet. Testing him down the straight or targeting some of those second-tier stakes races around Caulfield or Sandown could be ideal. Hopefully we’re talking about those major Sydney races this time next year.” Ice Kool was one of five winners for his sire Zoustar on Saturday.

Fontein Jewel delivers landmark Flemington win for Brisbourne

Fontein Jewel (Lucky Vega) provided trainer Ben Brisbourne with a memorable victory at Flemington on Saturday, giving the young horseman his first winner at the track since establishing a base at the famous racecourse in May. The two-year-old colt produced a tough performance to capture the TAB We’re On Handicap (1420m), defeating Insolence (Street Boss) by three-quarters of a length, with Star Of Macedon (Zoustar) flashing home for third. Brisbourne, who continues to operate from Wangaratta while expanding his Flemington presence, said the result was an important milestone for the stable. “It’s the third Flemington winner for us, but the first since we’ve had a base down here,” Brisbourne said. “That’s a big tick and hopefully it gets us noticed a little bit more, especially with these younger horses. It proves that what we’ve put in place so far is working.” Fontein Jewel was recording his second win from five starts after finishing runner-up in the Elvstroem Classic (1300m) at his previous outing. The victory was particularly significant for Brisbourne, with the colt being the first foal from his former stable star Fontein Diamond (Turffontein), winner of the Country Mile Final at Moonee Valley in 2021. “He’s the first foal out of Fontein Diamond, who was my first big winner as a trainer,” Brisbourne said. “She’s put the toughness into him and the stallion has added a bit of class. “It’s brilliant for Chris Morey and Terry Hurford, who bred him and have supported me for years, to get a result like this.”

Vegas Jack continues winning streak at Flemington

Former trainer Craig Conron celebrated a memorable return to Flemington on Saturday when in-form gelding Vegas Jack (So You Think) extended his winning sequence in the Country Racing It's Got It All Trophy (2540m). Ridden by Dean Yendall, Vegas Jack defeated The Western Front (War Decree) by 1.25 lengths, with Bold Soul (Embellish) a further half-length away in third. The victory was Conron’s first Flemington winner in almost 20 years, since Distant Melody (Distant Music) landed a black-type success during the 2007 Melbourne Cup Carnival. “It’s great to be back here and it’s great to be having a winner here,” said Conron, who returned to Victorian ranks 12 months ago after a six-year hiatus. “When it’s a Saturday at Flemington it’s a much bigger kick.” Conron purchased Vegas Jack on Inglis Digital for $13,000 in January last year after the gelding had been unplaced in two starts for Peter Moody and Katherine Coleman. Since joining the Geelong based trainer, the four-year-old has won six of nine races, including his past four consecutively. “I still think he’s six or 12 months off doing what he’s going to do,” Conron said. Earlier on the card, Cranbourne trainer Alex Rae ended an eight-year Flemington drought when I’mateez (Capitalist), a half-brother to champion mare Imperatriz (I Am Invincible), captured the Rod Johnson 3YO Handicap (1100m). The gelding scored by 1.75 lengths over La Astro Chat (Star Turn), with Prestar (Zoustar) third. “I trained my first winner here with my first runner in 2018 and it’s been eight years between drinks,” Rae said. “This is a great result.”

Alice Mae shocks at Randwick for Smith

Unheralded mare Alice Mae (Kermadec) delivered a major upset at Randwick on Saturday, giving trainer Matt Smith one of the longest-priced winners of his career when scoring at $101. The five-year-old settled midfield before finding clear running in the straight and finishing strongly to claim the B\&J Guttering & Metal Roofing Handicap (1800m) by three-quarters of a length over Shangri La Impact (Staphanos). Smith said he could not recall training a metropolitan Saturday winner at longer odds. “That might be the first,” Smith said. “But I’ve had a run of 100-1 shots running second and third in the last 12 months, so it’s good to get one up. It was a bit of a shock, but we’ll take it.” Having her seventh start of the preparation, Alice Mae was in her first campaign for the Warwick Farm-based trainer, who said the mare had steadily improved as her fitness increased. “It was just a matter of getting the miles into her,” Smith said. “She’s an older mare and has taken a while to get fit. She has never had a staying preparation before. We’re training her differently to what she would have been trained previously and giving her a chance to get over a bit of ground.” Smith was also encouraged by the performance of stablemate Hammoon Heroine (Zoustar), who finished sixth and is expected to appreciate a step up in distance at future starts. Alice Mae’s victory capped a breakthrough performance for the mare and provided Smith with a rare and memorable winner at triple-figure odds.

Sunshineinmypocket strikes again ahead of Karaka sale

Progressive gelding Sunshineinmypocket (Proisir) enhanced his record with a powerful victory in the Cactus Imaging Handicap (1200m) at Randwick on Saturday, just days before his half-sister is offered at the NZB National Weanling Sale. Trained by Ciaron Maher for a syndicate headed by Ozzie Kheir, the six-year-old has now won seven of 17 starts and more than $465,000 in prizemoney. Fresh from ending a 12-month winning drought on the Gold Coast in May, Sunshineinmypocket was heavily backed into $2.50 favouritism and produced a brilliant late surge under Nash Rawiller. After settling near the rear, he was forced to wait for clear running before charging home to defeat Eye Of The Fire (Epaulette) and Romeo’s Choice (Choistar) by half a length. “I’m glad we had Nash on today,” assistant trainer Johann Gerard-Dubord said. “This horse has always shown a lot of talent and we’ve been waiting for him to take that next step. I think he’s a horse that will continue to go through the grades.” Rawiller was equally impressed. “He gives you a great feel, very professional,” he said. “I think the penny is starting to drop with him.” Bred by Daniel Nakhle, Sunshineinmypocket is out of the Jimmy Choux mare Sunrise Ruby, a daughter of Group 1 winner A Touch Of Ruby (Pins). A half-sister to Sunshineinmypocket by The Chosen One will be offered by Leanach Lodge as Lot 42 at Thursday’s NZB National Weanling Sale at Karaka.

Hostwin King impresses on debut for King’s Legacy

Without a two-year-race in Sydney, a strong field assembled for the juvenile 1000-metre maiden at Kembla Grange and it was first starter Hostwin King (King's Legacy) who stamped himself as a colt to follow.

Prepared by Tommy Wong, Hostwin King had hinted at ability with placings in both of his Warwick Farm lead-up trials and produced an eye-catching performance under Louis Beuzelin.

Settled off the speed, the bay colt travelled strongly before looming inside the final 150 metres and quickly putting the race beyond doubt. He surged clear to score by a length, running away from his rivals.

A $210,000 purchase from Eureka Stud's draft at the 2025 Inglis Classic Yearling Sale, Hostwin King was the second highest-priced yearling by King's Legacy sold that year.

Bred on a proven cross, Hostwin King is the third winner from as many foals produced and raced out of the stakes-placed mare Prada Miss (Northern Meteor).

The victory provided a timely boost for Coolmore stallion King's Legacy (Redoute's Choice), who continues to build momentum with his second crop. The dual Group 1-winning stallion has now sired 34 Australian winners this season putting him fifth on the second season sires table by winners. King’s Legacy has produced 6 stakes horses from 112 runners headed by stakes winners Regeneration and Steel Trap..

King's Legacy will stand at Coolmore Australia this spring for a fee of $11,000 (inc GST).

Glorious Moments continues rise with Randwick victory

Lightly raced four-year-old Glorious Moments (Brutal) strengthened his spring credentials with a determined victory over 1400 metres at Randwick on Saturday. Prepared by Jim and Greg Lee, the gelding carried topweight of 60.5kg in the Benchmark 78 and justified strong market support, producing a well-timed finish under Chad Schofield to score by a head. A winner of four of his seven starts, Glorious Moments has now earned more than $280,000 in prizemoney and shapes as a horse with black-type potential. Purchased for $85,000 by Shinkansen Bloodstock from Kirks Bridge Farm at the Inglis Classic Yearling Sale, Glorious Moments is a half-brother to Group 2 winners Stretan Angel (Harry Angel) and Stretan Ruler (Wild Ruler), the latter successful in this season’s Silver Slipper Stakes (Gr 2, 1100m). Their dam Stretan (Bernardini) has produced three winners from four runners and continues to enhance a rapidly emerging family. Stretan Angel was sold for $1.6 million at this year’s Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale to Arrowfield Stud and Stretan's yearling colt by Harry Angel realised $540,000 at the 2025 Inglis Classic Sale. Brutal completed a Randwick double when Bird Whistle (Brutal) claimed the Benchmark 72 over 1600 metres for Brett and Georgie Cavanough. The homebred mare, raced by Rob and Pam Crosby, took her record to three wins from 10 starts and earnings in excess of $200,000. She is the second winner from So You Think mare Think Like A Bird, a half-sister to Caulfield Cup winner Southern Speed (Southern Image). A sire of 82 winners, 5 at stakes level, including Nepotism, winner of the ATC Champagne Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) from his first two crops to race, Brutal is proving a prolific source of quality runners. Brutal will stand at Newgate Farm this spring at a fee of $16,500 (inc. GST).

Boxmoss claims Winter Series Final at Ellerslie

Progressive stayer Boxmoss (Vadamos) continued his rise through the grades with an impressive victory in The Lawn Shed Winter Series Stayers Final (2100m) at Ellerslie on Saturday. Trained by Chris Wood, Boxmoss settled beyond midfield along the rail under Warren Kennedy as Drop Of Something (Telperion) and Khan Huner (Mongolian Khan) set the pace. Kennedy was forced to wait for clear running approaching the home turn, but once a gap appeared behind eventual runner-up Hezashocka (Shocking), the favourite unleashed a powerful turn of foot to score by a length. Pacifico (Ardrossan) finished third. Wood admitted there were anxious moments as the field turned for home but was confident in the gelding’s acceleration. “I would have liked to see him get to the outside, but he has to learn when he gets amongst them,” Wood said. “He has got a superb finishing burst and Warren seems to have the knack of getting him to the front.” The trainer confirmed Boxmoss would now head to the spelling paddock before returning for a spring campaign. “He is untapped and he is only going to get better,” Wood said. Kennedy was impressed with the gelding’s performance, particularly after he appeared unusually relaxed before the race. “I was worried as he was really, really quiet before the race,” Kennedy said. “In the end he just glided through and won easily. “He settles well now, stays well and has a good turn of foot, and I think he can be a real contender next prep.” Bred and raced by Ian Farrelly, Boxmoss is out of the Stravinsky mare Pokuru Boxer. The victory was the sixth of his 28-start career and took his earnings beyond NZ$159,000.

Tomasina returns to winning form at Riccarton

Southland mare Tomasina (Darci Brahma) returned to the winner’s list with a determined victory in the Greenwood Amberley Cup (1400m) at Riccarton on Saturday. Ridden positively by leading apprentice Amber Riddell, Tomasina settled outside leader Lombardi (Verdi) before ranging alongside turning for home. The mare showed plenty of grit in the straight, holding off her rivals and the blustery conditions to score by three-quarters of a length. Trainer Sabin Kirkland was delighted to see the mare bounce back after a run of unplaced efforts dating back to April. “We had a few issues with her and we sorted them out,” Kirkland said. “To be honest, I was quite confident with her today from the way she had been working. “I was hoping for a bit of rain, but she ran well on top of it. She is a smart wee horse.” Kirkland noted the drop back to 57kg played a key role after the mare carried 60kg at her previous outing. Earlier on the card, fellow Southland visitor Riviera Rebel (Pure Champion) returned to winning form in the Sonia & Garry Thompson Open Handicap (2000m) for trainers Graham Eade and Brooke Kincaid. Meanwhile, Timaru-trained Undisputed (Contributer) continued his impressive run of form with a third straight victory in the Daphne Bannan Memorial Rating 75 (1200m). Formerly trained by Roger James and Robert Wellwood, the four-year-old has flourished since joining Bruce Tapper’s stable, following wins at Ascot Park and Wingatui with another dominant performance at Riccarton. Despite having won his previous two starts on heavy ground, Undisputed handled the Soft 5 conditions comfortably, sprinting clear to score by a length and a half. “He is doing everything right,” Tapper said. “I think he has just matured a bit more and his head is pretty good now.” Tapper indicated the gelding would likely have one more start before a spell, with New Zealand Cup Week a possible target later in the year.

Forsman celebrates Ellerslie double

Cambridge trainer Andrew Forsman enjoyed a successful day at Ellerslie on Saturday, securing a winning double on The Lawn Shed Winter Finals Day. The highlight came in The Lawn Shed Winter Series - Sprinters Final (1400m), where stablemates Yaldi (Ardrossan) and Mr Mojo Risin’ (Deep Field) quinellaed the event. Yaldi, ridden by Matt Cartwright, settled near the rear before unleashing a strong finish to score by a short head over Mr Mojo Risin’, who stormed home after finding clear running late. Pokuru Gold (Darci Brahma) was a further head away in third. “It was a great ride from Matty,” Forsman’s racing manager Joe Walker said. “He is becoming more tractable and the penny is finally starting to drop.” Walker was also pleased with Mr Mojo Risin’, who was backing up just a week after winning at Wanganui. “He can mix his form, so to see him put two together like that was a fantastic effort,” he said. Forsman completed his double later on the card when Orson Stone (El Roca) claimed The Lawn Shed Winter Series Progressive Final (1600m). Ridden patiently by Elen Nicholas, Orson Stone settled towards the rear before producing a powerful late burst to score. “He has been building all preparation and has been very consistent,” Walker said. “He just needed some clear air.” Nicholas described the gelding as “as honest as they come”. Walker indicated Yaldi and Mr Mojo Risin’ were likely to head for a spell, while Orson Stone could have one more winter start if suitable track conditions arise.

Getaway stakes spring claim with Ellerslie victory

Lightly-raced filly Getaway (Shamexpress) enhanced her spring prospects with a determined victory in The Lawn Shed Winter Series 3YO Final (1600m) at Ellerslie on Saturday. Prepared by Kurtis Pertab, the filly was having just her fourth start after a debut win at Rotorua and a runner-up finish at Te Rapa last month. Courtney Barnes overcame a wide draw to secure a handy position behind the speed before easing Getaway into the clear in the straight. The Windsor Park Stud homebred surged to the lead and dug deep to hold off the late challenges of Savvy Donna (Savabeel) and Anora (Swiss Ace). “She is still very green and doing a lot wrong, but it was nice that we got out into a good position early and then had some soft sectionals,” Pertab said. “It’s what you want to see from a three-year-old. She is going for a spell now and then back for the spring as a four-year-old. “She has done a great job and hopefully there is a stakes race for her next campaign.” Barnes said the race unfolded as planned and praised the filly’s toughness. “The plan was to sit outside the leader where she could get it easy and it worked out well,” Barnes said. “It was a really tough effort after the speed went on mid-race. She was very brave.” Getaway is third winner from as many foals to race out of the High Chaparral mare High Tail It.

Back Of The Bus breaks through in Ellerslie juvenile final

Promising juvenile Back Of The Bus (Hello Youmzain) continued her progression with a determined victory in the Lawn Shed Winter Series 2YO Final (1200m) at Ellerslie on Saturday. Prepared by Cambridge trainer Tony Pike, the filly settled outside pacemaker Tardis (Time Test) before taking control shortly after straightening. Under Jasmine Fawcett, she found a strong kick in the closing stages to hold off the fast-finishing Russian Prime (Russian Revolution) by a head, with Tardis a further head away in third. Stable representative Ryan Stacey said the filly had improved with each start and benefited from her recent raceday experience, although the Soft 5 surface may have been firmer than ideal. “She has improved from run to run, although to be honest we thought we might see the best of her on a wet track,” Stacey said. “Today we just told Jasmine to be positive, she got her into a beautiful rhythm, and she whacked away really well.” The victory came at just her third start after finishing fourth behind Tardis at her previous outing. Stacey also reported mixed fortunes for the stable’s other runners, with Pellargo (Better Than Ready) finishing fifth and race favourite Intan (Shamexpress) failing to feature after missing the start. Fawcett credited the filly’s ability to relax mid-race as a key factor in the result. “She got a breather mid-race and balanced up nicely around the corner,” Fawcett said. “When I asked for an effort she gave it to me.” Back Of The Bus was purchased by Pike for NZ$25,000 through the National Online Yearling Sale on Gavelhouse Plus last year. She is out of the Medaglia d’Oro mare Luce Del Sole, a half-sister to Listed Hazlett Stakes (L, 1400m) winner Witz End (Savabeel).

HK: Savabeel tops breeze for Hong Kong International Sale

The sad passing of Kiwi sensation Savabeel (Zabeel) rocked the bloodstock world this week and as condolences flowed, his progeny simply continue to do what they’re renowned for, with a Waikato Stud sold three-year-old one of only two lots to break 11 seconds for the Sha Tin breeze.

Lot 4 in the July 3rd Sale, last went through a sale ring as a yearling at the 2024 New Zealand Bloodstock National Yearling Sale making $620,000 to the bid of the Hong Kong Jockey Club (HKJC).

Recording a time of 10.91, the gelding out of Simply You (O’Reilly) is a brother to MVRC Bill Stutt Stakes (Gr 2, 2040m) winner Forgot You and was the fastest of the 21 lots to breeze with Lot 1, a Per Incanto (Street Cry), running 10.94.

The Hong Kong International Sale (HKIS) was first introduced by the HKJC in 1995, and continues to be a proven source of elite performers, with graduates including Good Ba Ba (Lear Fan), Pakistan Star (Shamardal) and more recently Romantic Warrior (Acclamation).

International Sale Griffins are sourced from yearling sales around the world before being pre-trained and prepared for racing in Hong Kong. There are currently 35 HKIS graduates in training and, this season alone, they have combined for 39 wins from 20 individual horses.

Executive manager of Hong Kong International Sale and owner advisory services Danny Rolston was pleased with the outcome of the breeze-up session despite concerns earlier in the week about the weather.

“We were a bit worried with the black rain coming through on Thursday, but that just put a little bit of juice in the ground and we ended up with perfect conditions as the weather cleared,” Rolston told HK Standard.

“The breeze-ups took place in really good conditions and all the horses went particularly well. Everything hit the line comfortably under its own steam.”

Rolston highlighted Lots 1, 2, 4, 5, 8, 17, 20 and 21 among the standout performers of the session. Lots breezed in pairs with the exception of Lot 21.

“Having an odd number is always a challenge because you need one horse to breeze on its own, but Lot 21 did a pretty good job. He ran a nice, slick time without having any company,” he said.

Lot 21 is a three-year-old Starspangledbanner (Choisir) out of Formidable Kitt (Invincible Spirit) sourced from the 2024 Tattersalls October Yearling Sale. Breeze Up times can be viewed here: https://campaigns.hkjc.com/hkis/en/index-of-lots
