Cambridge Stud’s shuttler Chaldean (Frankel) has been very well received on his first trip over to the southern hemisphere and that positive reception is being replicated by his sales prices on both sides of the Tasman, with a colt by the Classic-winning stallion selling for a top-priced $250,000 during Thursday’s New Zealand Bloodstock (NZB) National Weanling Sale.

Sent through the ring by Haunui Farm, Lot 3 kicked off the sale in explosive fashion as he was knocked down to Mike Fleming’s Bhima Thoroughbreds, Blue Gum Farm and Suman Hedge Bloodstock.

What's On

The final price came in as the highest paid at the National Weanling Sale since a Savabeel (Zabeel) colt out of Bohemian Lily (O’Reilly) went for $360,000 in 2022.

“I bought a couple here a few years ago and I’m always happy to come over for the right horse that’s forward and well-moving,” Australian-based Fleming said.

“This colt’s a lovely horse. I came in yesterday, and with the rain, I didn’t get out yesterday so I waited until this morning. He was right at the top of my list.

“A few other people have come in with us on him, and we’ll get him back to New South Wales and see where he heads over there next year.”

The colt is the second foal out of the Showcasing (Oasis Dream) mare Novashow, who won twice on the track and also ran fourth in the Matamata Breeders’ Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) as a juvenile. This female line is a strong one, with the mare herself being a daughter of Listed winner Bonaichi (Fusaichi Pegasus) and also a granddaughter of VRC Emirates Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) scorer Bonanova (Star Way).

He is also just the second offspring of English 2,000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1m) hero Chaldean to be sold at auction in the southern hemisphere, following on from a filly that made AU$180,000 at the Inglis Great Southern Sale earlier this month.

“This colt was only the second Chaldean that’s gone for auction in the southern hemisphere, and he had a very good filly that sold well at Great Southern in Melbourne,” Fleming said.

“If the sire is putting them together like that, I think the Aussie buyers will be into them next year as well, so that had a bearing for us too.”

On the price, Fleming said he felt the colt would always make in the region of $200,000 in Australian dollars.

“It’s always hard to know when you’ve got someone on the phone, but we were thinking that, with the horse he was and how he stacked up with the others, he was the sort of horse that was always going to make his 200,” Fleming said.

“I suppose, when you get to 200, you start converting it back to Aussie dollars. You know, in the end, he probably landed at about 200,000 Aussie.”

Haunui would also go on to have the equal-third top lot with a Super Seth (Dundeel) colt (Lot 121) out of unraced Per Incanto (Street Cry) mare Incanto Rose, who sold to Bleakley Bloodstock for $180,000.

“He was a really nice colt,” Libby Bleakley said. “We came here a few weanlings short at the end of the Australian series, so we just needed a couple of really nice standouts by good sires to fill out the draft for January. We are very happy to get our top-ranked one, very happy to get him.

“It’s also significant that he’s out of a Per Incanto mare. He’s having great success as a broodmare sire, obviously headed by Ka Ying Rising in Hong Kong, so I’m happy to add this colt to the band.”

Thursday’s second-top lot was Lot 141, a bay colt by another Classic-winning shuttler in Paddington (Siyouni) that was sold for $190,000.

Purchased by Byerley Bloodstock, the colt was put through the ring by Seaton Park as a supplementary entry to the catalogue and attracted plenty of support as a half-brother to Group 1 winner Lion’s Roar (Contributer).

“It was obviously a big point going into the sale, him being a supplementary entry and a half-brother to a Group 1 winner,” Byerley’s Liam Peters said.

“He’s out of a family that obviously throws plenty of black type. And I was always personally a big fan of Paddington as a racehorse. I was quite shocked that he ended up shuttling to New Zealand – I thought he was one of those top-class racehorses that they [Coolmore] might have thought too valuable to travel. But it’s great that we have access to him through New Zealand. I’m really happy to have secured this bloke today.”

Peters revealed he placed the winning bid online, and praised the media that was provided of the colt before the sale.

“The videos get you every angle and can give you a bit of confidence, but also a big thank you to Andrew Buick and Mike Kneebone at NZB for helping out and sending through their thoughts as well and making it all very easy,” he said.

The colt will now head over to Australia to join Peters’ grandfather, renowned Western Australian owner Bob Peters, and race in the familiar cerise and white silks.

“He likes trying to aim for those Guineas or Derby style of horses, and we really hope that this bloke ends up fitting that profile,” Peters added. “He definitely looks like he will.

“It’s great to be tapping into that Siyouni bloodline as well through Paddington. St Mark’s Basilica has had a red-hot start, so it’s definitely a proven formula. We’ve got a couple of those at home that we quite like. It’ll be interesting going forward to see how they mature.

“The exchange rate definitely helps when we’re buying in New Zealand. We saw that with the yearling sale earlier in the year as well. We bought up there – I think we ended up with six, and we’re very happy with all those purchases. So we just thought we might as well have a crack, and really glad that we were able to secure something, even though it was so late in the sale.

“We’ll bring him straight home now and put him out with a few of our other weanlings and see how he compares with them. Hopefully he’s one of the standouts going forward.”

As well as his colt out of Incanto Rose, Coolmore’s new acquisition Super Seth had the other equal-third top lot of the day courtesy of Lot 16.

Consigned by Waikato Stud, the colt is out of the dual-winning Savabeel mare Popular, whose three foals to race are all winners and include Flemington scorer Wolfy (Tivaci) along with The NZB Kiwi (Listed, 1500m) fourth placegetter Sought After (Tivaci).

He was purchased by Paul Pertab, who would also secure a Per Incanto filly (Lot 14) for $65,000 and a Hilal (Fastnet Rock) colt (Lot 100) for $100,000 on the day.

“I like the sire, but couldn’t afford one of his progeny until today,” Pertab said. “As well as being by such a good sire, this colt has good legs and nice balance.

“They change so much between now and when you put a saddle on them, but you’ve just got to go with your gut instinct. I thought this was a tidy horse.

“Whether he goes towards the Ready to Run Sale or whatever else we do with him, it’s just going to depend on what mould he fits into at the time.”

A total of nine of Super Seth’s penultimate Kiwi weanling crop went through the Karaka sale ring on Thursday, with eight of them selling for a total of $965,000 and an average price of $120,625. The stallion will stand his first season at Coolmore next spring for a fee of A$137,500 (inc GST).

At the end of selling Paul Pertab was the leading buyer with his trio of purchases, while the leading vendor by both aggregate and average was Waikato Stud, selling nine lots for $704,500 at an average of $78,278.

All of the sale’s key metrics increased, with a total aggregate of $3,593,000 for the 102 weanlings sold at Karaka marking an increase of 49 per cent.

The compact 143-lot catalogue also witnessed an increased average of $35,255 (up 23 per cent), an impressive 89 per cent clearance rate, and a strong buying bench from Australia, New Zealand, China, Hong Kong and Japan.

“The results today are very encouraging for the season ahead for both the Ready to Run and National Yearling Sale,” NZB managing director Andrew Seabrook said.

“The first season sires all sold very well, and the only disappointment was that we didn’t have enough horses to sell.

“Hopefully breeders will have a look at the results today and realise the wonderful opportunities that this Sale presents. It’s vital that this physical Weanling Sale continues, so NZB’s goal for next year is to increase the size of the catalogue.”

Portelli monitoring weather ahead of Rosehill

Trainer Gary Portelli will keep a close eye on the weather before deciding the makeup of his Rosehill team on Saturday, with several runners dependent on track conditions. Portelli has accepted with six horses, but said as many as four could come out if forecast rain arrives and the track deteriorates. Lightly raced three-year-old Performance (Snitzel) is among those likely to scratch if conditions worsen, with the filly set to resume in the Kia Ora Bloodlines to Headlines Handicap (1100m) only if the track remains around a Soft 5 or improves. Performance created a strong impression in her first preparation, finishing runner-up on debut before breaking through at Randwick. After two encouraging trials, Portelli believes the imposing filly has returned an even stronger horse. "I've always had a lot of time for her," Portelli said. "She had a few growing pains, but she's a big, strong filly and if the weather stays away, she's a nice chance first-up." Performane is the first foal out Rendition (Pierro), a stakes placed daughter of Surround Stakes (Gr 2 1400m) winner Chinchilla Rose (Lion Hunter). Mother Goose (Lonhro) is another whose start will depend on circumstances after drawing wide in the Midway Handicap (1300m), while Miss Hades (Hellbent) and Flying Trapeze (Trapeze Artist) also require firmer footing. Flying Trapeze resumes following a rig operation after an encouraging first-up effort at Canterbury. "He ran well first-up in a strong benchmark race at a track that doesn't really suit him," Portelli said. "He can sprint well, but like a few of ours, we need a dry track." Portelli said Godolphin mare Thames (Lonhro) shapes as one of the stable's better chances after excuses at her past two starts. The mare struggled on a Heavy 9 at Rosehill before working too hard in an unsuitably run race at Kensington last start. "Her run on the Kenso was enormous," Portelli said. "She got back, made a wide run when the tempo slackened and still finished off well. Back to 1200 metres at Rosehill, she can run a big race if the track isn't too heavy."

Gibbons chasing third Group 1 aboard Infancy

Dylan Gibbons will bid for his third Group 1 victory when he partners the Kris Lees-trained Infancy (Wandjina) in Saturday's Tattersall's Tiara (Gr 1, 1400m) at Eagle Farm. After rebuilding his career following a shoulder injury suffered at the end of 2024, Gibbons has enjoyed a consistent 2025/26 season and sits eighth on the Sydney metropolitan jockeys' premiership with 38 winners. "I wanted to re-establish myself, be a consistent city rider and keep chipping away at the winners," Gibbons said. "I've had a good provincial season, and those horses can eventually turn into city winners. Fortunately enough, I'm also getting near the forty metropolitan winners mark." Gibbons has previously claimed Group 1 success aboard Explosive Jack (Jakkalberry) in the 2023 Sydney Cup and Kalapour (War Command) in the 2024 Tancred Stakes (Gr 1, 2400m). He believes Infancy, despite being a $51 outsider, is capable of producing an upset if conditions suit. The daughter of Wandjina (Snitzel) was an eye-catching runner-up in the ATC Sapphire Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) a race she won the previous year, before midfield finishes in the Luskin Star Stakes (Listed, 1300m) and Bob Charley Stakes (Listed, 1100m), where race shape worked against her. "She has over-achieved her whole career and done a remarkable job," Gibbons said. "The 1400 metres is getting near her maximum distance, but in the Luskin Star they ran it like a mile race and she was there to the 50 metres before getting chopped out. If she can get the right run, she's got a wicked turn of foot." Infancy is one of seven stakes winners for Wandjina who now stands at Larneuk Stud in Victoria and would be the first Group One winner for the stallion.
Gibbons will also partner stablemate Brudenell (Russian Revolution) in the W J Healy Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m), hoping the honest sprinter can finally add a Group victory to his record. "He's one of my favourite horses," Gibbons said. "He's honest as the day is long and has only gotten better with age. If things go his way, he'll give one hundred and ten per cent and it would be nice to see him get a Group win." Brudenell has won two Listed events over a million dollars and placed in another seven blacktype races. Gibbons has a full book of eight rides at Eagle Farm, with Geemes (Grunt) among his leading hopes in the Tattersall's Gold Crown (Listed, 2100m).

Bazaball Rewarded chasing another city win at Caulfield

Trainer Kelvin Southey is confident Bazaball Rewarded (Reward For Effort) has taken the next step this preparation as the progressive mare targets another metropolitan victory at Caulfield on Saturday. The four-year-old will contest the Sportsbet More Places Benchmark 84 Handicap (1100m) after recording two wins from three starts this campaign, either side of a luckless fifth in the Bel Esprit Stakes (Listed, 1100m). Southey admitted he had considered bringing the daughter of Reward For Effort (Exceed and Excel) to town earlier but elected to keep her at Mornington last season, where she secured the Mornington Marvel title and its $100,000 bonus. "I would have brought her to town earlier, but that was a bit of a carrot there," Southey said. "She ran a track record at Mornington, so she's obviously got some gears. The two wins at Caulfield have been really good and I think she's improved this prep." Bazaball Rewarded has now won seven from sixteen all at 1000m, including five of six starts at Mornington. Her only defeat was when stretched to 1200m although Southey believes she is more than just a five furlong specialist. "I thought she was unlucky in the Bel Esprit," he said. "They just ran a bit quick early and she still sprinted well at the top of the straight, but was probably in the wrong part of the track. "If we can get her to settle a little better early, she'll finish off stronger." Rather than contest the mares' Benchmark 84 over the same distance, Southey has elected to take on the males over 1100m, allowing the mare to carry 59.5kg, two kilograms less than she would have in the fillies and mares race. Premiership-chasing jockey Jamie Mott retains the ride from barrier 12. "I just didn't want to put too much weight on her and Jamie rides her well," Southey said. "He's got a good feel for her."

Miracle Spin chasing hat-trick at Caulfield

Trainer Andrew Bobbin will look to continue Miracle Spin's (Pivotal) remarkable turnaround when the rejuvenated import chases a winning hat-trick at Caulfield on Saturday. The former European heads into the Sportsbet Caulfield Cup Carnival Hospitality Benchmark 78 Handicap (2000m) after consecutive victories at Caulfield Heath and in the Casterton Cup (2000m). The recent success is a far cry from last spring, when Miracle Spin failed to win in three starts and finished last, beaten 23 lengths, in the Penshurst Cup (2000m). Bobbin admitted he even questioned whether the gelding would have another preparation. "There were multiple times during the first six or eight weeks with this fellow that I thought maybe we might be looking at rehoming him as a pleasure horse," Bobbin said. The Stawell trainer believes identifying the key to the horse has sparked the turnaround. "Once the softer tracks came around I realised that all his work has to be either done on the heavy sand or in the swimming pool," he said. "We worked out the key is to keep the weight off his limbs. Tried horses all come with their battle scars and it's about trying to keep them together, but this horse is moving as well as I'm sure he has for a long time." Bobbin also credited apprentice Shayleigh Ingelse for the gelding's recent success, although she will miss Saturday's meeting through suspension. Harry Coffey takes over the ride, with Miracle Spin carrying 60.5kg after drawing barrier 13. "The wide gate isn't ideal, but he's a fairly tractable horse," Bobbin said. "If he can find a position somewhere on the back of the horses, he should be really strong late."

Snowden expects Touristic to bounce back in McKell Cup

Trainer Peter Snowden is confident Touristic (Frankel) can rebound from his last-start defeat when the seasoned stayer lines up in Saturday's McKell Cup (Listed, 2000m) at Rosehill. The seven-year-old will make his 10th start of a productive campaign that began in November and has included victory in the Canberra Cup (Listed, 2000m), along with placings in the January Cup (Listed, 2000m) and Gosford Cup (Listed, 2100m). Touristic finished well down the track in the Lord Mayor's Cup (Gr 3, 2000m) at Eagle Farm last start, but Snowden believes the result was more a product of race circumstances than fatigue. "Things didn't work out," Snowden said. "We've learned from that. It's all about riding him the right way. Ride him to his strengths and he'll run really well." The son of Frankel (Galileo) has won six races, with five of those victories coming on rain-affected ground, and Snowden is hoping forecast showers arrive before Saturday's feature. "I would like to see the track a little wetter, but they are forecasting a few showers," he said. "A Soft 5, 6 or 7 is perfect for him. He can turn this around on Saturday, no problem. He loves racing and he's in really good shape." Touristic shapes as one of the leading chances in the McKell Cup following the scratching of Rotagilla (All Too Hard), who will instead head to Brisbane. His rivals include defending winner Golden Path (Belardo), progressive stayer God's Window (Dubawi) and the in-form Tavros (Bull Point), trained by Tamworth horseman Craig Martin.

Future History chasing Tattersall's Cup to keep Melbourne Cup dream alive

A Melbourne Cup campaign is firmly on the agenda for Future History (Showcasing) if the accomplished stayer can deliver in Saturday's Tattersall's Cup (Gr 3, 2400m) at Eagle Farm. Trainer Greg Hickman has targeted the winter feature throughout the gelding's campaign and believes the eight-year-old is ready to peak after two encouraging runs for his new stable. Future History won three consecutive races over the summer for former trainer Ciaron Maher before joining Hickman following a change of ownership. Since then, he has finished a close fourth in the Chairman's Handicap (Gr 3, 2000m) at Doomben and third in the Lord Mayor's Cup (Gr 3, 2000m) at Eagle Farm. Hickman admitted it took longer than expected to bring the imposing gelding to full fitness. "We've just had to learn a little bit about him," he said. "When he came in, he was 600 kilos. I have worked him hard all week and he's put on six kilos, so he's a big boy. It has been a month between runs, but I did a fair bit with him Saturday week ago and his work was exceptional. Touch wood, everything has been perfect." A winner over distances up to 2800 metres, Future History is expected to relish stepping up to 2400 metres. Despite drawing the outside gate in the small field, Hickman is happy to leave tactics to Nash Rawiller. "This race has been the main target this campaign," Hickman said. "If he was to race well on Saturday and then come home, he would have a freshen up and then go to Melbourne." Future History opened a narrow favourite ahead of fellow stayer Pounding (Exceed and Excel), with victory set to strengthen his claims for a second Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) appearance. Recent history also offers encouragement, with the past three Melbourne Cup winners all using the Brisbane Winter Carnival as part of their spring preparation.

Collett back from break with stakes chance at Tauranga

A refreshed Samantha Collett returns to action at Tauranga on Saturday with a limited book of rides following an overseas break. However, the 36-year-old still looks to have a strong chance of celebrating her return with a black-type victory aboard the talented mare Churchillian (Churchill) in the Tauranga Classic (Listed, 1400m). “I’ve just come back from a three-week holiday in Europe, which was much needed,” Collett said. “I’d done a lot of travelling and cutting weight and that eventually takes its toll, but I’m feeling really good now and had my first morning back at the track this [Thursday] morning. The next month probably won’t be too busy for me, I’ll just pace myself with the intention of being full on for the new season.” Collett is in her first full domestic season back following a four-year stint in Queensland and has posted 85 winners, with her earnings reaching a personal best of more than $3.5 million. “Money-wise it’s obviously been good, I really wanted to get to 100 winners for the season and I’ll fall short of that unfortunately, but in the grand scheme of things it has been good and it’s nice to be home,” she said. “I left in October 2021 and I’ve been back for just over a year.” The Pam Gerard-trained Cork (Complacent) provided Collett with her first stakes win on her return when they successfully combined in the 2025 edition of the Tauranga Classic. “She [Churchillian] has won at Tauranga before so it would be fantastic to win it two years in a row,” Collett said. “I’ve had a couple of wins on her and she’s a fantastic little mare.”

International

11 for Pinatubo, 32 for Havana Grey

Darley shuttler Pinatubo (Shamardal) chalked up his 11th individual stakes winner and Whitsbury Manor Stud stallion Havana Grey (Havana Gold) was handed his 32nd when both Glorious Game (2 f ex Along Came Casey by Oratorio) and Havana Sprite (2 f ex Spright by Charm Spirit) dead-heated for first in Thursday’s Empress Fillies’ Stakes (Listed, 6f) at Newmarket’s July Course. Ridden by Oisin Murphy, the Hugo Palmer-trained Glorious Game ran on well inside the final furlong and joined the James Tate-trained Havana Sprite, under Hector Crouch, on the line to force the photo-finish. With the judge unable to split either rival, a dead-heat was called as the result for first, with a further half-length back to the third-placed The Can Can Queen (Zoustar). Closely related to Group 3 winner Feliciana De Vega (Lope De Vega) and a half-sister to three winners including the smart Matsuri (Sea The Stars), Glorious Game is the eighth foal out of the Listed-winning Oratorio (Danehill) mare Along Came Casey. Meanwhile, Havana Sprite is a half-sister to winner Polly Darling (Showcasing) being the second foal out of the winning Charm Spirit (Invincible Spirit) mare Spright, who is a half-sister to the Listed-placed winner Morning Post (Acclamation). Pinatubo is shuttling to Darley’s Kelvinside base for a fee of $27,500 (inc GST), while Havana Grey stood the 2026 northern hemisphere breeding season for a private fee.

166 for Lope De Vega

Fresh from a memorable Royal Ascot campaign, Joseph O'Brien returned to winning ways at home when Rebel Moon (3 f ex Purely Priceless by Galileo) captured the Jannah Rose Stakes (Gr 3, 1m 2.5f) at Naas on Wednesday. The daughter of Lope De Vega (Shamardal), racing in the colours of the race sponsors Al Shira'aa Racing, backed up the promise of her winning debut at Gowran in April, where the placegetter Johanna Walsh (Sea The Stars) had since franked the form by finishing runner-up in the Ribblesdale Stakes (Gr 2, 1m 4f) at Royal Ascot. Starting the 11-4 second favourite, Rebel Moon remains undefeated in two starts having produced a determined finish under Dylan Browne McMonagle to overhaul the Noel Meade-trained Caught U Sleeping (Cotai Glory) and score by a neck. Aidan O'Brien's Epsom Oaks (Gr 1, 1m 4f) fifth Cameo (Wootton Bassett) started favourite but could only manage third, beaten five and a quarter lengths by the winner. "We're delighted with her," O'Brien told Racing TV. "She did well to win on debut and the form has obviously worked out well. We just had a little hold up with her after that race, so we missed a little bit of time. This was an obvious target for her, given the ownership. It was a lovely ride from Dylan. She looked green still in the race and I think there is a lot more to come from her, hopefully. She has some nice options in France as well as in Ireland." Rebel Moon was a 500,000gns purchase by Al Shira'aa Racing at Book 1 of the 2024 Tattersalls October Yearling Sale. Regally bred, she is out of two-time winner Purely Priceless (Galileo), the dam of eight named foals for seven to race and six winners including a phenomenal five stakes horses, each by a different sire. Lope De Vega, who was handed his 166th individual stakes winner, stood the 2026 northern hemisphere breeding season at Ballylinch Stud for a fee of €200,000 (approx. AU$328,970).

RSA: Klawervlei Stud enters new era under new ownership

South Africa's six-time champion breeder Klawervlei Stud has been purchased by prominent businessman and leading owner Laurence Wernars.

The sale marks one of the most significant developments in South African breeding in recent years, with stewardship of one of the country's most successful thoroughbred operations passing from the Koster family after 45 years.

Klawervlei has bred some of South Africa's finest racehorses, including champion sire Captain Al, outstanding stallion One World, champion Vercingetorix, Group 1-winning mare Roland Song, international sprinter Shea Shea, Durban July winner Kommetdieding and champion filly Carry On Alice.

The transaction does not include the existing bloodstock, with the farm's stallions, broodmares and weanlings—around 160 horses—set to be dispersed at an on-farm sale on August 10.

Wernars said the appeal lay in the Bonnievale nursery's outstanding infrastructure and long-established reputation.

"We are purchasing a beautifully equipped farm with its assets and equipment, not the existing bloodstock," he said.

"We currently have 54 mares spread around the country and most of them will be relocated to Klawervlei. The farm will also remain a luxury boarding facility and continue to accommodate outside clients."

Although he had never planned to own a stud farm, Wernars said recent visits to Royal Ascot, Juddmonte Farms and Darley Stud inspired the move.

"I was hugely impressed by the excellence of their operations, and getting to touch the legendary Frankel and Dubawi was an unforgettable experience," he said.

"My visits to the studs reminded me of the horizons our wonderful sport continues to present. This feels like the next step in our journey."

A key factor in the purchase was the agreement for long-time studmaster John Koster to remain during the transition and assist with training a new stud manager.

Koster welcomed the change of ownership and praised Wernars' passion for the industry.

"Laurence is a man with huge energy and a deep passion for horses, racing, breeding and people," he said.

"For 45 years our family has taken this farm to magnificent success. Laurence has a firm commitment to the horses, the people and the traditions that have shaped that success.

"I'd like to thank all our staff, clients and friends who have supported us on this extraordinary journey. Most importantly, we thank our wonderful thoroughbreds, who have been at the heart of everything we have done and remain the enduring legacy of this farm."

Caspar Fownes stretches championship lead as Cody Mo posts a treble

Bidding for a fifth Hong Kong trainers’ championship, Caspar Fownes tightened his grip on the 2025/26 title after teaming with Joao Moreira for a winner at Happy Valley on Wednesday night ensuring a five-win buffer as Cody Mo took training honours on the night with a treble.

With only six meetings left in the season, Fownes (64 wins) leads Danny Shum (59), Mark Newnham (58), Francis Lui (54) and David Hayes (52) after Moreira piloted Sky Cap (Capitalist) to victory in the Class 3 Des Voeux Road Central Handicap (1000m) with a copybook ride.

Since returning to Hong Kong as Fownes’ retained jockey, four-time Hong Kong champion jockey Moreira has racked up 24 wins – 21 for Fownes – including Sky Cap, who earned a PP Bonus of HK$1.5 million.

“It's (every win) getting crucial at this stage. I'm very happy for the owners (Kwan Yui Man), they're one of my biggest supporters, the whole (Kwan) family. They're the most beautiful people to train for - they let me do my job and never hassle me,” Fownes said.

“I'm so happy to get the win for them and on top of that, to get the first win bonus, which is great. The horse has done a good job for us. We dropped the horse back to 1000m and I said to Joao just give him a chance to just get in behind the speed - one out, one back. That was the winning move. He just lasted so I'm very happy.”

Mo slotted a three-timer with Flying Fortune (Sweynesse), Meowth (Showtime) and Jumbo Treasure (Written Tycoon) to continue his rise through the trainers’ ranks. With 20 wins in his first HK season and 40 in his second campaign, Mo has tallied 45 wins so far in 2025/26.

“I’m very happy with the three wins,” Mo said after Jumbo Treasure sprinted hard late to land the Class 3 Leighton Road Handicap (1200m) to give Derek Leung a double.

“We freshened him up and we had a good barrier (one) and he got a good run. The freshen up worked.”

Mo combined with Vincent Ho to snare the second section of the Class 4 Morrison Hill Road Handicap (1650m) with Flying Fortune before teaming with Luke Ferraris and Meowth to win the Class 4 Racing World 50th Anniversary Cup Handicap (1200m).

Rosewood Fleetfoot (Proisir) made it two course and distance victories in a row with a tough staying performance to clinch the Class 5 Ice House Street Handicap (2200m) for Ricky Yiu and Karis Teetan before All Are Mine (New Bay) steamed home to land the Class 5 Westlands Road Handicap (1650m) under Alexis Badel to continue Brett Crawford’s excellent debut season in Hong Kong, delivering the trainer’s 23rd winner.

Manfred Man fired in a double when Blossomy (Love Conquers All) made it two wins from his past three starts when he ran on solidly to wear down Charming Legend (Deep Field) and snare the first section of the Class 4 Morrison Hill Road Handicap (1650m), as Danica’s Choice (Swiss Ace) broke through in the first section of the Class 4 Connaught Road Central Handicap (1200m) for Hugh Bowman.

Formerly known as Mallister when trained by Annabelle Johnson in New Zealand, Danica’s Choice surged powerfully late to down Cloud Nine (Tiger Heart).

“I told the owner I was confident he [Danica’s Choice] had a chance because last time, he was close. This time, I was just worried about the draw, but he still won,” Man said.

Hong Kong racing continues at Sha Tin on Saturday.

Hong Kong Champion Awards finalists announced

The finalists for the 2025/26 Hong Kong Jockey Club Champion Awards have been unveiled ahead of next month's presentation ceremony.

The final nominees were announced during Wednesday night's Happy Valley meeting, with Hong Kong Jockey Club Chief Executive Officer Winfried Engelbrecht-Bresges revealing the shortlisted contenders alongside Executive Director of Racing Andrew Harding, Executive Director of Sports Business Casper Stylsvig and Year of the Horse Ambassador Aaron Kwok.

The six-member judging panel comprises three Hong Kong Jockey Club representatives and three members from the Association of Hong Kong Racing Journalists.

Representing the HKJC are Engelbrecht-Bresges, Andrew Harding and Head of Racing Product Greg Carpenter, while the journalists' panel consists of Association chairman Carlos Wu, vice-chairman Cheung Kam Yau and committee member Toto Wong.

The judging panel acknowledged the outstanding performances of all finalists throughout the 2025/26 season and congratulated the connections of each nominated horse. The Champion Awards presentation will be held at the Rosewood Hong Kong on Friday, July 10.

Maiden Of The Week

The Chris Waller-trained sale topper Omolong (Extreme Choice) made the perfect start to his career on Wednesday when he landed an 1100-metre contest for juveniles at Warwick Farm.

Ridden by Tommy Berry following a trio of promising barrier trial performances, including a win in his most recent at Rosehill, the Extreme Choice (Not A Single Doubt) colt defeated stablemates Sanctum (Stay Inside) and Letters Patent (Wootton Bassett) by 1.2 and 1.4 lengths respectively.

Trainer: Chris Waller

Owner: Yu Long Investments (Mgr: Y Zhang) & G Harvey

Sale: 2025 Magic Millions Gold Coast National Yearling Sale V: Baramul Stud P: Yu Long Investments Pty Ltd, $850,000

Breeder: Gerry Harvey

Sent to the 2025 Magic Millions Gold Coast National Yearling Sale by Baramul Stud, Omolong was purchased by Yulong for a record-equalling $850,000, with breeder Gerry Harvey retaining a small share in the colt.

“They all ran super. Obviously, Omolong made it hard for himself, stepping a little bit slow away, but he was too good and the other two acquitted themselves nicely,” stable representative Charlie Duckworth said.

“We’ll get today out of the way. He's now no longer a maiden, so he'll have to step up in grade and things become much harder from that point on, but it was a brilliant first day at school.

“He's a little bit small, but that's Extreme Choice… he can throw them in any shape and size, and they've all seemingly got engines.

“Gerry Harvey kept a little share in him as well. He did the same with Campione D'Italia, so hopefully he's just as lucky with this colt.”

Berry was also excited with the performance, adding: “I loved his trials. He went past me in his last trial when I was second and I had a look and was like, 'Oh, who's that?’ Then you see yourself on him at acceptances and it’s a pretty good feeling.

“In the gates there were a couple playing up around him and he was too busy sort of concentrating on that, so he didn't leave the gates very well, but I just rode him to Plan B and asked him to switch off, which was very easy. He was in my hands when I asked him to go, and he rounded them up pretty quick. It's a nice feeling when you don't have to use the persuader.”

A rare early January foal, Omolong is the fifth winner from six foals to race out of the winning Northern Meteor (Encosta De Lago) mare Samarmeteors, who was covered last spring by Broadsiding (Too Darn Hot).

He became the sixth two-year-old winner this season from just nine runners for Extreme Choice, alongside Group-winning colts Paradoxium, Berzelius and Hidrix.
