Hard Kick set for winter launch as spring riches await

With three winners from their last four juvenile runners, the Lindsay Park team is enjoying a late season baby boom and connections are supremely confident that Hard Kick (All Too Hard) can extend the stable’s red-hot streak by maintaining the unbeaten start to his career at Flemington this Saturday.

Over the past four days, Team Hayes’ two-year-olds My China Plate (Exceedance), Defarzio (Zousain) and Baby Blue (Blue Point) have all registered dominant wins – by a combined ten lengths – and that momentum will now be carried by Hard Kick into his highly anticipated return to action in the 2YO Handicap (1000m) on his home track.

The son of Vinery Stud’s ultra-consistent All Too Hard (Casino Prince) got his career off to a stunning start with an effortless debut win in the Talindert Stakes (Listed, 1100m) in mid-February, and he was immediately installed as one of the favourites for the Blue Diamond Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) the following week.

Despite the temptation to press on to Victoria’s premier race for juveniles, the Hayes camp ultimately elected to divert the gelding to a pristine paddock at their Euroa base with a view to unleashing him as a more furnished product in the late winter and early spring months.

Judging by his recent trial outing at Werribee, where he comfortably accounted for his highly regarded stablemate Cruiserweight (Hello Youmzain), the spell has served Hard Kick exceedingly well and despite having to concede weight to all eight of his rivals on Saturday, co-trainer Will Hayes believes the youngster will again prove hard to beat down the famous Flemington straight.

“He’s naturally strengthened and developed and he’s definitely ready for his three-year-old season,” Hayes told ANZ News from Port Douglas, where the entire clan is currently enjoying a winter holiday.

“We weren’t 100 per cent happy to do the back-up [into the Blue Diamond] with a two-year-old, even though he looked a great chance in the race. In the end we decided to follow the advice of our vet team and put the horse first. Although it definitely wasn’t an easy decision at the time, hopefully we can now reap the rewards of it.

“Hard Kick was one of our most exciting juveniles this year, and we’ve been really happy with how he’s prepped up. We’re excited to see him back down the Flemington straight and we were already pretty confident about how he’d come back even before his recent trial win over Cruiserweight, who franked the form nicely over the weekend.

“As Dad [David] picked him out at the sales and owns him, there’s obviously a very good chance that he’ll end up in Hong Kong one day. But hopefully we can put some more black type on his CV before he leaves us. We know he handles the Flemington straight so if we’re dreaming big, then a race like the Coolmore would be a very nice option. But we’ll get through Saturday first before mapping out his full spring program.”

In the more immediate term, Hard Kick is likely to be aimed at the Vain Stakes (Gr 3, 1100m) next month before stepping up to 1200 metres for the first time in the Group 3 McNeil Stakes, which like the Vain is also run at Caulfield.

Should he add a Group victory or indeed two to his Listed success on debut, it would certainly validate the potential Jimmy Unwala saw in him as a yearling when he purchased the then-colt for $30,000 under his Avesta Bloodstock banner at the 2025 Adelaide Magic Millions Sale.

Unwala subsequently re-offered the Macquarie Stud graduate as part of the Hannover Lodge draft at the Inglis Ready 2 Race Sale, with Lindsay Park acquiring Lot 19 for $140,000 after being suitably impressed by his slick 200-metre breeze-up time of 10.10 seconds.

The $110,000 profit (minus Hannover Lodge’s preparation fee) brought about a highly satisfactory result for Indian expat Unwala, a Flying start graduate who initially earned his stripes at Aquis before venturing out on his own.

Unwala is naturally excited to see Hard Kick step out for his second start in the hope that he can become the poster boy for his burgeoning business, which to this point has predominantly been built on pinhooking weanlings.

“I’m very excited about seeing Hard Kick return,” Unwala told ANZ News from his native India, where he spends the off season each year.

“He won the Talindert so well and then I heard a rumour that he had been sent over to Hong Kong, so I was very pleased to see some back at the trials recently. If you analyse the form from the Talindert, it has held up very well and Daniel O’Sullivan rated his win very highly. The horse is still very untapped and I believe that if all goes well they may be heading to the Coolmore with him, which would be very exciting.

“Obviously I don’t own the horse, but he’s still been good for my business. I don’t usually buy many yearlings, my main business is pinhooking weanlings and breeding from mares to sell their weanlings. So with the limited opportunities I get to trade yearlings at the Ready to Run sales, it gives me a lot of confidence to know that I’m buying the right product when one of my purchases performs so well on debut.

“I wouldn’t say he was a perfect-looking yearling by any means, but to me he just looked like a horse that could run. I’ve always been taught to be a little bit forgiving of horses, and it’s definitely worked out pretty well in this instance. Hopefully Hard Kick’s early success gives other people the confidence to buy a horse from me in the future, and if he can win again on Saturday I’ll be very happy.”

Newgate Farm’s first-season sire Profiteer (Capitalist) sired his fifth individual winner on Wednesday when the Paul Shailer-trained Profit In Paradise (2 g ex Gobelin by Dawn Approach) left it late to land a 1000-metre maiden at Eagle Farm. Ridden by Jag Guthmann-Chester, the gelding was scoring at the fourth time of asking as he defeated Xtravagant Johnny (Xtravagant) by 0.1 lengths, coming from last to first in the home straight before holding on well. There was a further 0.9 lengths back to Tommy Tie (Heroic Valour) in third. Purchased by Peter Kwan for $35,000 at the 2025 Magic Millions Gold Coast National Yearling Sale from Bowness Stud, Profit In Paradise is the first winner out of the winning Dawn Approach (New Approach) mare Gobelin, herself from the family of Group winners Folding Gear (Johar) and Royal Success (Savabeel). Profiteer is standing for a fee of $11,000 (inc GST).

Band Of Brothers goes pillar-to-post in Ramornie Handicap

Band Of Brothers (4 g Omaha Beach - Medgrinda by Medaglia D’Oro) bagged his second career stakes success on Wednesday when leading all the way in the Ramornie Handicap (Listed, 1200m) at Grafton. Ridden by Dylan Turner for Murwillumbah-based trainer Matthew Dunn, the four-year-old gelding was sent forward from barrier six and, having kicked at the 200 metres, held on well from Pereille (Fastnet Rock) to score by 1.2 lengths. Irish import Givemethebeatboys (Bungle Inthejungle) finished a further 0.3 lengths behind in third. “It's the first time we've been able to get one of the two big ones here with the [Grafton] Cup or the Ramornie,” said Dunn. “We went to the Glasshouse second-up and he was a little bit disappointing [in ninth], but he probably got into the wrong part of the track from the wide gate. He improved today and when he finds himself in front, he really fights and they had their opportunity to get to him a few times in the straight but he really dug deep. He's a great horse. All surfaces it doesn't matter with him being wet, dry or heavy so I'm just really stoked.” Wednesday’s win added to Band Of Brothers’ previous stakes success in the Vain Stakes (Gr 3, 1100m) as a three-year-old in 2024.

Castillo King impresses on debut

The Michael Freedman-trained Castillo King (Farnan) could be set for a step up to stakes class after making an impressive winning debut at Warwick Farm on Wednesday. Having shown plenty of promise in a pair of trials prior to this week's contest, the Farnan (Not A Single Doubt) colt proved even better on the racetrack as he downed Group 2-placed colt Eviction Notice (Stay Inside) by a taking 3.2 lengths under Tommy Berry in the 1100-metre maiden. There was a further 0.8 lengths back to Maritime Magnate (Capitalist) in third place. "We knew Eviction Notice was going to be a bit tricky. Being one of Gai's [Waterhouse's] and with Rachel [King] on board, it's speed all the way, and a few others had some runs under their belts as well," Freedman's stable representative Sophie Johnson said. "It was really good to see. He's been a professional horse from day one. He's not a problem being a colt, and he handles himself really well." Johnson confirmed The Rosebud (Listed, 1100m) at Rosehill on August 15 would be considered for Castillo King. "All being well. It's definitely a race that's on the cards for him but it can go any way with horses," she said.

Oh Yes She Did breaks maiden

Having run down the field in the Inglis Millennium (RL, 1100m) when last seen in February, the Peter Snowden-trained filly Oh Yes She Did (Yes Yes Yes) was another who broke her maiden at the fourth time of asking on Wednesday, taking out the Robrick Lodge Maiden Plate (1100m) at Warwick Farm. Ridden by Chad Schofield, the daughter of Yes Yes Yes (Rubick) worse down odds-on favourite Chanterelle (Ole Kirk) late in the race to score by 0.6 lengths. There was a further one and a half lengths back to Coco Affair (Home Affairs) in third place. "It was good to see her do what she did today because she's been showing us quite a bit at home," Snowden said. “A beautiful physical type that's a great mover and there was a lot to like about what she did today. She can be in a bit of a hurry to do things. She got a bit keen mid race today but then relaxed again and found plenty in what I think was a good race. If she comes through today there's no reason why we can't push on and give her another run or two." A $240,000 Inglis Classic purchase for Kearney Racing and D Springfield from the Tyreel Stud draft, Oh Yes She Did is a full-sister to the stakes-placed winner Maili and a half-sister to stakes scorer Kalino (Pierro) being the fourth winner from five foals to race out of Lanikai (I Am Invincible).

Mott predicts bright future for American Eagle

Too Darn Hot (Dubawi) youngster American Eagle impressed his rider Jamie Mott when making a winning debut at Sandown-Hillside on Wednesday. The Clayton Douglas-trained colt lined up in the Sportsbet Jockey Watch Handicap (1200m) as the $3.50 second-elect having run sixth in a trial at Randwick last month but proved too strong for the $2.80 favourite Judas Tree (Blue Point), swooping late to score by 0.8 lengths. There was a further 0.4 lengths back to the third-placed Commit (Profiteer). "I was really looking forward to riding this guy," Mott said. "He came down here with some nice raps on him and he gave me a really good feel on what was a really testing track at the Mornington jump-outs. Today the track conditions were a little bit better than what they were there and I was confident, even though he's a horse that will be better on top of the ground, but I was confident he would get through it today. I think he's got a lot of class and a bright future." Douglas echoed his rider's thoughts and feels the colt will get further in time. "He's got a great temperament and that's going to take him a long way," Douglas said. "He's a big strong horse that is going to keep on developing and I think there will be some nice races for him in the future. We think that he will get out over further so we wanted to make sure that he raced in a good manner today and we felt the Sandown track would suit him, a big spacious track, where we could let him balance up. He hit the line nicely and I think he will improve off the run as I think he's a bit away fitness wise."

King Pedro on spring trial in Grafton Cup

Last-start Stayers Cup (2400m) winner King Pedro (Eminent) will be on trial for a spring campaign when he lines up in Thursday's Grafton Cup (Listed, 2350m). A $1.90 favourite in pre-post markets, King Pedro will again be ridden by Kerrin McEvoy, who has adjusted his holiday plans to ride the Tom Charlton-trained gelding. "He was very keen as soon as the horse won last start," Charlton said. "He had holiday plans up north and tied it in. He knows the horse and he's an extremely good staying rider, so that gives us confidence. It's the right race for him. It has been on his agenda for a while. He's building a good record, and he should enjoy a mile-and-a-half around there. It was a rewarding victory last time. He deserved it and there's no reason he can't make his presence felt at stakes level here and in the future." Should King Pedro win the Listed contest, a move for races such as The Metropolitan (Gr 1, 2400m) or even the Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) could be considered. "All options are on the table at this stage," Charlton said. "His performance here and in the early spring will be indicative of where we get to, whether it's a Metropolitan or it's a bit less than that. Or whether he may stay further, and we could think about a Melbourne Cup."

Everybody Rise bidding to maintain unbeaten run for Bruce

Having been unbeaten in three starts since moving to new trainer Jack Bruce, Everybody Rise (Snitzel) will bid to make it four on the spin when he heads to Ipswich for a Class 4 Handicap (1100m). The Snitzel (Redoute’s Choice) four-year-old, who cost $1.4 million as a yearling, began life with Peter Snowden before then moving to Matt Vella after being purchased by Blueblood Thoroughbreds for $75,000, and has been with Bruce since earlier this year. With back-to-back wins registered on the Sunshine Coast Polytrack, he then headed for Ipswich where he won over 1100 metres. "Sometimes horses have the talent but just need to win one and they can string a couple together," Bruce said. "He won a modest maiden fresh up, but has gained confidence from that and has improved at each subsequent start. He is a happy horse in a good headspace at the minute and is really finding the line in his races."

Start the key for Seeiaye

Peter Snowden is hoping that Seeiaye (Russian Revolution) can start well in Saturday's Kia Ora Bloodlines to Headlines Handicap (1200m) at Rosehill, and if he does the trainer reckons he could be hard to beat. A debut winner of the Max Lees Classic (900m) back in November, the gelded son of Russian Revolution (Snitzel) has failed to score since but was a 0.6 lengths second to Omolong in an 1100-metre handicap at Rosehill last time out. Given the juvenile's recent slow starts, Snowden is content with barrier eight of 12 for him this weekend. "It's better because if he blows the start drawn inside, they get across him and it's no good," Snowden said. "The wider the better. If he makes a mistake, he gets a second chance. He likes to race right on speed. He stepped better the other day and he raced better, so it's imperative that he begins well and puts himself there. His effort was good. He ran at a really fast pace and was up on speed doing most of the work. The horse that won was backed for a fortune, and he did well to stick on and run as close as he did."

Sugawara enjoys first Aussie winner

Japanese rider Akira Sugawara was delighted to get his first Australian winner on Wednesday, riding out the Clayton Douglas-trained Final Moment (Hanseatic) to success in the Benchmark 64 (1000m) at Sandown-Hillside. The three-year-old Hanseatic (Street Boss) filly scored her second win as she defeated Saluted (I Am Immortal) by 1.3 lengths. “This is my first win here in Australia. I love it here,” Sugawara told Racing.com. “I am pleased to ride this filly and get the win.” Sugawara’s name may be familiar to Australian racing fans, with the 25-year-old partnering Japanese stayer Warp Speed (Drefong) to second in the 2024 Melbourne Cup behind surprise victor Knight’s Choice (Extreme Choice). “I have good memories here, having ridden in the Melbourne Cup. That was a great experience,” he said.

Siggy Carr announces retirement

Siggy Carr, one of Tasmania’s most successful jockeys, has called time on her career due to the physical and mental toll stemming from a fall at the Hobart trials two years ago. “The decision has sunk in. It’s still bittersweet. I’m proud of what I achieved, but I didn’t feel like I was finished. I had to look at things realistically,” Carr, who holds a dual licence, told Racing.com. “I’ll now be focusing 100 per cent on training. I’ve still been on and off in pain and it kept reminding me of things. It’s been hard to move on. The pain in my neck stuck around for about 18 months and having that pain reminds you of the fall itself. My confidence really got shot through it all, which was jarring because I’ve always been quite confident in my riding. I was never the same on a horse [after the incident]. I always told myself that if I ever felt like it, then I shouldn’t be out there. I’ve worked really hard on the mental demons and I’ve certainly come a long way, but the PTSD took a long time to get on top of. I’ve never dealt with anything like that. Dealing with that was the hardest part of it all. Now the decision has been made, I can move forward without putting myself under pressure, mentally. I now feel a lot more comfortable riding trackwork.” Having had her first ride in 2012, Carr chalked up nearly 600 wins and 13 at stakes level as a jockey.

Racing NSW reaches agreement with Tabcorp to approve National Tote

Racing NSW has announced that it has reached agreement with Tabcorp on a series of important initiatives that future proof the industry. They include the extension of certain key agreements through to 2031. This includes international pooling, free to air rights for 52 Saturdays and the continued funding of the newly upgraded Golden Eagle (Gr 1, 1500m). The approval for the implementation of the National Tote, which has the potential to further grow revenues and provides more opportunities for punters through larger totalisator pools. And also for Racing NSW to manage Sky Thoroughbred Central, which will see new programs and initiatives to promote the NSW thoroughbred racing industry and make the channel more appealing to new audiences. Racing NSW chief executive Peter V’landys AM said: “These announcements future proof the industry and ensure that our participants and clubs can continue to benefit from these important revenue streams. Further to this, more revenue for the NSW Thoroughbred Racing Industry is expected to be generated from the introduction of a National Tote. The totalisator is an important part of the wagering market, and the National Tote can further stimulate tote betting through larger pools which make the pools more elastic. This ensures better value and more opportunities for punters. The innovations with Sky Thoroughbred Central are also significant. Racing is competing in a modern media environment, and we need to keep improving how the sport is presented, promoted and consumed. This agreement ensures that the NSW Thoroughbred Racing Industry has a platform to promote not just the races themselves, but also the horses and participants to showcase the sport to new audiences.”

Stablemates in good touch for Taranaki return

Peter Lock’s trio of weekend representatives will be back in familiar territory at New Plymouth where they have all performed well on previous visits. The Te Aroha trainer will have Pick Of The Litter (Vadamos), Jungle Love (Ace High) and No More Pennies (Proisir) in action on Saturday with all three in good form ahead of their respective engagements. Pick Of The Litter will drop back in trip for the Sinclair Electrical & Refrigeration (1800m) following a middle-distance victory on her home track two runs back and a solid last-start fourth at Waverley. “I have been tossing up whether to run her in the Taumarunui Cup, but I was worried she might not get in that so we’ve paid up for Saturday and her work on Tuesday morning was probably her best for months,” Lock said. “Masa Hashizume is coming down to ride her, he thinks a bit of the mare and she is very genuine and going extra well.” Taranaki Building Ltd (1400m) contender Jungle Love is a two-time winner at New Plymouth and due another major reward following consecutive runner-up finishes at Otaki, Matamata and most recently at Waverley. “I couldn’t be happier with her, and she really deserves to get another one," Lock said. Meanwhile, No More Pennies, who has twice placed at New Plymouth, was a dominant last-start winner at Waverley and has trained on well ahead of the Seaton Park MAAT (1800m). “The race on Saturday looks a good one for him, it’s a nice step up in distance,” Lock said.

HK: Greenham Stakes winner Alparslan purchased by Whyte

Greenham Stakes (Gr 3, 7f) winner Alparslan (Dandy Man) will continue his career in Hong Kong following a private sale of the colt. The son of Dandy Man (Mozart) had won three of his five starts for trainer Karl Burke and owner Mohammad Saeed Al Shehhi, and was last seen running fifth of nine behind Gstaad (Starspangledbanner) in the Irish 2,000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1m) in May. The three-year-old was purchased by agent Federico Barberini for €75,000 from the 2024 Tattersalls Ireland September Yearling Sale. The private deal was brokered by Mark McStay, who told the Racing Post: “He’s been purchased on behalf of trainer Douglas Whyte for his stable syndicate. We’d been interested in the horse since the Greenham and, when I looked at him at the Curragh, I thought he was a beautiful individual. He ran very well in the Guineas too. We were on his trail in advance of the London Sale but didn’t manage to get a deal done. After he failed to sell there we made an approach to Federico Barberini and Karl Burke and managed to secure the horse. I want to thank them for facilitating the deal because I think he’s a horse that’ll do really well in Hong Kong.”

HK: Hampton Court winner Generic another added to HK ranks

Last month's Hampton Court Stakes (Gr 3, 1m 2f) winner Generic (Kameko) has also been sold to Hong Kong. The three-year-old gelding has run four times in his career to date and is yet to finish outside of the top two, with him also being runner-up behind subsequent Prix du Jockey Club (Gr 1, 2100m) and Coral-Eclipse (Gr 1, 1m 2f) winner Constitution River (Wootton Bassett) in the Dee Stakes (Listed, 1m 2.5f) at Chester in May. The sale was confirmed by bloodstock agent Will Douglass. "I'm always looking for horses for Hong Kong, that's a large part of my business, and leading into Ascot it's always hard to get good people to part with them," Douglass told the Racing Post. "Once Ascot's been, the market opens up and the Hampton Court and Britannia are the two races that have horses who will suit Hong Kong and their programme. There's their Classic Series, with the Classic Mile, the Classic Cup and then the Derby. The Hampton Court is obviously a very nice race to win and it's generally won by a horse who goes on and can compete at the top table. Generic's a really exciting horse and Andrew Balding [trainer] has done a fantastic job with him, while Jeff Smith [former owner] and [Littleton manager] David Bowe were great to deal with as well."

25 for Sea The Stars

Gilltown Stud stalwart Sea The Stars (Cape Cross) chalked up his 25th individual elite-level winner on Tuesday when the William Haggas-trained Maltese Cross (3 c ex Nabatea by Camelot) narrowly landed the Grand Prix de Paris (Gr 1, 2400m) at Longchamp. Ridden by Tom Marquand, the three-year-old colt came from the rear of the field and squeezed between rivals before collaring Ancient Egypt (Frankel) on the line by a head. There was just a neck further back to Alam (Zelzal) in third. Bred by Ecurie Du Sud and Ecurie Gribomont, Maltese Cross has been through the sales ring on two occasions, latterly when selling to Hurworth Bloodstock for 350,000gns during Book 1 of the 2024 Tattersalls October Yearling Sale. A half-brother to the stakes-placed winner Namouria (Adlerflug), he is the third foal out of the winning Camelot (Montjeu) mare Nabatea, herself a half-sister to German Group 1 winners Nymphea (Dylan Thomas) and Nutan (Duke Of Marmalade) being out of the Group-placed winner Neele (Peintre Celebre). Sea The Stars stood the 2026 northern hemisphere breeding season for a career-high fee of €300,000 (approx. AU$490,250).

FR: Behrayna stretches unbeaten run to four

Aga Khan Studs filly Behrayna (3 f Sea The Moon - Behnasa by Dansili) extended her unbeaten record to four on Tuesday when leaving it late to land the Prix de Malleret (Gr 2, 2400m) at Longchamp. Ridden by Mickael Barzalona for trainer Francis Graffard, the daughter of Sea The Moon (Sea The Stars) pressed leader Pink Panthera (Chachnak) inside the final furlong and narrowly denied that rival by a neck at the line. There was a further three lengths back to Dispatches (Frankel) in third place. Tuesday’s win means Behrayna has now won a maiden, Listed, Group 3 and Group 2 from her quartet of outings to date.

FR: Sons And Lovers makes all in Prix Maurice de Nieuil

Irish raider Sons And Lovers (5 g Study Of Man - So In Love by Smart Strike) racked up his third Group-race success on Tuesday when making all in the Prix Maurice de Nieuil (Gr 2, 2800m) at Longchamp. The Joseph O’Brien-trained gelding was sent to the front under Dylan Browne McMonagle and set slow fractions before being pushed all the way to the line by eventual runner-up Parachutiste (Dubawi). The winner prevailed by a head, with just a neck further back to the third-placed Double Major (Daiwa Major).

US: Our Moneyman hits record $2 million at Fasig-Tipton

Our Moneyman (Mr. Money) topped the Fasig-Tipton's July Selected Horses of Racing Age Sale on Tuesday, setting a sale record of US$2 million (approx. AU$2.85 million) when purchased by agent Pedro Lanz on behalf of KSA Stables. The three-year-old Mr. Money (Goldencents) colt ran a neck second in last weekend's Indiana Derby (Gr 3, 8.5f) for owner-breeder Chester Thomas’s Allied Racing Stable and will remain with current trainer Bret Calhoun under the ownership of KSA, which is run by King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz and sons. "I come here every year, and it's always hard to find a horse, because nobody wants to sell. When someone brings a horse, you have to pay," Lanz told BloodHorse. "I was watching his replays, and I was wishing this horse would come [to this sale]. When I saw this horse, and I saw that race, I said, 'Wow, this is the horse who will be perfect for Saudi Arabia’. The next day, Anna [Seitz of Fasig-Tipton] came to me and told me, 'I have a horse who could be interesting for you.' And, I was like, 'Wow, that was my wish.' I'm very happy. This is a very good horse."

And sometimes it comes in handy, as with the creation story of exciting two-year-old Angels Fury (Harry Angel), who showed an earlier mishap was well and truly behind her with a second straight win at start three on Saturday at Caulfield.

The Ciaron Maher-trained filly was put together by a gang of five including breeding industry byword Duncan Grimley and his old mates John Johnstone and Alan Orr.

That trio had bred her dam, Ashra Jahre (Headwater), which came about because they’d followed the family from her third dam, Procrastinate (Jade Hunter), the obvious star of this female line.

Foaled in 1990, Procrastinate was a daughter of Mr. Prospector (Raise A Native) stallion Jade Hunter, who sired four American Grade 1 winners but did little in three shuttle seasons here.

Procrastinate, who carried the “tuxedo” colours of another of Grimley and Co’s friends, David Fitzgerald of India Pacific Bloodstock, was Jade Hunter’s best southern progeny. That was only by virtue of her one black type success in Caulfield’s Tristarc Stakes (Gr 3, 1400m) in 1994, for a young Adelaide trainer in David Hall.

But at stud she was colossal. She threw five stakes winners, and 12 winners, from 15 runners, most of whom have kicked on at stud themselves.

Filly first foal Laisserfaire (Danehill) went to South Africa and won three Grade 1s, becoming the country’s Champion Older Female Sprinter for two years running.

Her full-brother Foreplay won a Melbourne Listed and was Group 1-placed to earn a stud deal, though he left only four stakes winners.

Personify (Galileo) won an Adelaide Listed and put the genes into 2020 VRC Oaks (Gr 1, 2500m) queen Personal (Fastnet Rock), among four stakes horses.

Time Thief (Redoute’s Choice) also won a Melbourne Listed and was twice placed at the top level - including a second in the Caulfield Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) - before also going to stud and siring elite victor In Her Time among eight stakes winners.

And Procrastinate’s stakes quintet rounds out with A Time For Julia (Redoute’s Choice), a dual stakes winner who’s carried things on by leaving Adelaide Listed victor As Time Goes By (Deep Impact), as well as a $1.9 million 2022 yearling colt who died before he could race.

It was because of following Procrastinate through good friend Fitzgerald that had Johnstone keen to make a splash under the old oak tree at Inglis Easter in 2009.

A Hunter Valley winemaker and bon vivant - the two usually do go together - Johnstone delved into horses and teamed up with Grimley in the 1980s.

Amongst this particular posse of mates, Grimley no doubt holds sway when it comes to pedigree matters - he’s a breeder of Fastnet Rock (Danehill) and Gytrash (Lope De Vega) after all. But on this occasion, Johnstone spurned Grimley’s advice as he sought to buy a granddaughter of Procrastinate.

She was Lot 318, co-bred by Indian Pacific and offered by Edinglassie Stud. A roomy filly, she was by the keenly sought Encosta De Lago (Fairy King) and out of one of Procrastinate’s lesser lights, a mare rather fittingly named Whatever (Danzero), since she did nothing memorable and had only one, ordinary, start.

Johnstone at least liked what he saw. No one else did.

“She was such a large filly, and she had big open knees,” Johnstone tells It’s In The Blood. “But, in my mind at least, she walked with great balance. She was a very quiet walker, didn’t clunk along, and I loved the way she carried herself over the ground.

“Every sale, I’d go looking at progeny out of Procrastinate’s family. We’d tried to buy Procrastinate many moons ago earlier, when she’d had one or two winners, but we didn’t.

“But this filly was one who caught my eye, and I was determined to get something out of the family. I thought if she runs, she runs, if she doesn’t I’ve got a filly from the family. And this would be the only way I could afford to get into the family.”

Grimley wondered if they were looking at the same filly.

“John fell in love with her at the yearling sales, and he was one of one,” he says with a laugh. “She didn’t have an athletic bone in her body, I wouldn’t have thought, but John was determined. We had some fun while he was bidding on her, I know that much.”

That’s Grimley now. On sale day 17 years ago, he was less diplomatic.

“Duncan said, ‘You can’t buy that - it’s a boat!’” Johnstone says. “I said ‘She’s a beautiful horse!’

“So every time I bid, Duncan was there next to me - ‘Arooga! Arooga!’ - making noises like a tugboat horn. It was pretty funny, but I got her in the end.”

Johnstone, unsurprisingly, didn’t have to stretch too far, securing the filly for $100,000.

Once he did, probably fearing one of those improbable stories, his mates came along and bought in.

“So everyone was making fun of me, and I said, ‘Ok - I’ll keep her myself’,” Johnstone says. “That’s when they all came in.”

The filly went to Anthony Cummings, was named Jahre, and providing Johnstone with a large dose of the “I told you so’s”, she indeed became a winner. Of a Wyong maiden. Over 2000 metres. On a Heavy 9.

And that’s it.

“Her claim to fame was running the Queensland Oaks,” Johnstone says of a wild 100-1 throw at the black type stumps, which resulted in a 14th of 17.

He also laughs on recalling that Wyong Heavy 9, saying: “She had such huge feet!”

Still, the team started breeding from her, and here’s where Johnstone can really claim the last laugh.

Her first three foals were city winners, the second of them the speedy Miss Amajardan (Hinchinbrook). Though sold rather humbly herself - for $6,500 at the old Inglis Scone sale - she bolted home with the season’s first two-year-old race, at Armidale, and won at Randwick one start later.

Injury curtailed her career, but she became the dam of Sejardan (Sebring), a dual Group winner of more than $1.2 million for Gary Portelli, and an unlucky third-favourite in the 2022 Golden Slipper (Gr 1, 1200m), before a stud deal and - sadly - a premature demise.

Jahre’s fourth foal was Blazing Miss (Sizzling), another city victor who was four times stakes-placed, while her sixth was Tristate (Headwater), also black type placed.

Two more city winners came from Jahre including Motoscafo (Castelvecchio), who’ll seek a second city win this Saturday at Rosehill for John Thompson, with his breeders Johnstone, Grimley and Orr in the ownership.

And between Blazing Miss and Tristate came the latter’s full-sister Ashra Jahre who, after winning three NSW country sprints, looks to have continued the class of this family in exciting style, as Angels Fury’s dam.

Sold for $80,000 to Darby Racing at Inglis Classic, Ashra Jahre was bought back off the track by her three breeders, along with Yvonne and Mark Clerke - who care for the mare and Jahre at their Glastonbury Farms property. Jodi Woodbury, who’d co-owned Ashra Jahre through her racing days, kept her share and is thus another co-breeder of Angels Fury.

Ashra Jahre first had a Spirit Of Boom (Sequalo) filly who died after birth, then went to Darley’s impressive shuttler Harry Angel (Dark Angel) to produce Angels Fury, who was bought by Astute Bloodstock for $270,000 at Magic Millions Gold Coast from Bell River Thoroughbreds’ draft. A colt by Spirit Of Boom was bought by Angels Fury’s trainer Maher at the same sale last January, for $200,000.

Such was the buzz around the young Angels Fury, the breeding team are now keenly awaiting another foal by Ashra Jahre out of Harry Angel.

The British dual Group 1-winning sprinter continues to make great strides in Australia, earning a fee bump from $66,000 to $88,000 (inc GST) this year, with Darley reporting continued strong demand.

The 12-year-old currently sits 13th on the Australian general sires’ table - after finishing seventh last term in only his third season of runners - but is equal-eighth by stakes winners, with seven.

“I’ve always liked Harry Angel,” Grimley says of the compact, 15.3-hand stallion. “I’ve sent three or four mares to him ever since he’s been at stud.

“He was a genuine champion sprinter. He had a few quirks, but he would’ve been able to hold his own against any of our sprinters. He was a bargain price at the time ($16,500), so I thought - why not? We sent a few mares to him, and Ashra Jahre was one of them.

“She’s a big strong mare, so I thought they’d suit each other physically. That was the main thing.”

There’s no in-breeding and not a lot happening in the pedigree in terms of nicks and clicks, but there is an 8f x 7f of the great blue hen Best In Show (Traffic Judge). Her daughter Sex Appeal (Buckpasser) is the dam of Harry Angel’s fifth sire Try My Best (Northern Dancer), while Show Lady (Sir Ivor) is the second dam of Hurricane Sky (Star Watch), the damsire of Ashra Jahre’s sire Headwater (Exceed And Excel).

There’s also an interesting 6m x 8f of Reine-de-Course Canadian mare Ciboulette (Chop Chop). She’s the dam of Night Shift (Northern Dancer), Dark Angel’s second damsire, and comes into the bottom half via her phenomenal daughter Fanfreluche (Northern Dancer), the fourth dam of Encosta De Lago, the sire of Jahre.

Such appearances so deep in a pedigree don’t tick many boxes in the Book of Grimley, who’s more into modern than ancient history.

“What colour eyes did your great, great, great, great, great, great grandfather have?” he asks with a laugh, though he does respect the famously influential mares.

“I love Fanfreluche, there’s no doubt about that,” he says. “She basically doesn’t miss. She’s a bit like Denise’s Joy or Best In Show or Urban Sea. If you get on that tree somewhere, you’ve got a great chance of getting a black type horse. Genuine blue hen mares.”

The most common sires in the pedigree are Native Dancer (Polynesian) and Hyperion (Gainsborough), with 15 spots each, while Natalma (Native Dancer) and her dam Almahmoud (Mahmoud) have 12 apiece.

Meanwhile, that brave buy of Johnstone’s - Jahre - is still breeding at 19, carrying a Wild Ruler (Snitzel) foal and with a State Of Rest (Starspangledbanner) weanling filly at foot. Angels Fury is her first granddaughter to race, and carries on the speed factor that’s in most horses in the family, except Jahre herself.

“Jahre’s had nine foals to race and they’ve all won, and now it’s just so good to see her daughters producing horses. And she’s proved to be the most beautiful mare in the paddock and really looks after her foals. Yvonne [Clerke] says she’s her favourite,” says Johnstone, who credits two factors in what’s been “quite an amazing story”.

“I think it was luck,” he says. “Luck and stubbornness.”

David Eustace claims season finale honours with Happy Valley treble

David Eustace slotted a treble at Happy Valley on Wednesday night to equal his career-best haul in Hong Kong as the 2025/26 racing season closed in spectacular style with Caspar Fownes and Zac Purton taking overall individual honours.

Fownes completed the 88th and final meeting of the season with 69 wins to snare his fifth Hong Kong trainers’ championship from Danny Shum (65) and Mark Newnham (61), while Purton finished with 143 victories – 80 clear of nearest rival Hugh Bowman (64), with Andrea Atzeni third on 63 wins.

Shum concluded an outstanding campaign in style as three-year-old Winning Champion (Alabama Express) triumphed in the Class 4 Star Shine Handicap (1200m). Achieving his best finish in the Hong Kong trainers’ championship with second overall, Shum also posted a career-high seasonal tally, easily surpassing his 57 wins in 2020/21.

“It’s been an amazing season for me and my stable. I’d like to thank my owners who support me, my staff who have done a great job, and my wife too. I really appreciate it all,” Shum said.

“We’ve kept him [Winning Champion] a bit fresh and the ground was a little bit soft today, which probably helped him. He deserved to win a race this season.”

Newnham also completed the season on a high – saddling a winner with his last runner of the campaign when Crimson Flash (Showtime) clinched the Class 2 Lucky Patch Handicap (1200m), edging out Lucky With You (Artie Schiller) after a thrilling battle.

“A good way to finish the year. It’s been a great season – it’s gone better than I expected the whole way through,” said Newnham, who won the Hong Kong Derby (Listed, 2000m) with Invincible Ibis (Hellbent) and the Champions Mile (Gr 1, 1600m) with My Wish (Flying Artie).

“He’s [Crimson Flash] building a really good record here [six wins from 16 starts]. He’s shown enough versatility – he’s won a couple times at Sha Tin as well, but he’s just a genuinely good horse.”

David Hayes finished the term with 56 wins – fifth overall behind Fownes, Shum, Newnham and Francis Lui (56) – after three-year-old Starry Show (Brave Smash) broke through for his first victory in the Class 4 Fast Most Furious Handicap (1200m) for Richard Kingscote and the remarkable Harmony N Blessed (Magnus) landed the Class 3 Sun Jewellery Handicap (1200m).

Nine-year-old Harmony N Blessed tigerishly outlasted Danica’s Choice (Swiss Ace), prevailing by a nose, to notch his 11th win at his 80th start and take his career prize-money to HK$19.3 million (approx. AU$3.51 million).

But it was Eustace who took centre stage with a three-timer, eclipsing last season’s haul of 36 wins with a treble to finish the term with 38 wins, striking with Fashion Legend (Deep Field) and Kyrus Treasure (Smart Missile), both for Joao Moreira, and also Gratifide (Shamus Award) under Kingscote.

Veteran Fashion Legend prevailed in the Class 5 Silver Grecian Handicap (1650m) before Kyrus Treasure clinched the Class 4 Turin Warrior Handicap (1800m).

“He [Fashion Legend] is a horse who likes a bit of soft ground and he literally hasn’t had a wet track since he has been in Hong Kong, hence he’s been handling the dirt and doing his winning on the dirt,” Eustace said.

“We were happy to see the rain come and I thought he could run well tonight. I thought it was a very good ride from Joao. He’s hard to get off Caspar, but he’s been very kind and offered his services a few times for me, so it’s nice to get a winner with him.”

Kingscote, who tallied 16 wins for the campaign after piloting Gratifide to success in the Class 4 Super Oasis Handicap (1200m), said: “It’s nice to have a winner for both Mr Hayes and Mr Eustace. Obviously, Mr Eustace is having a good night, and I’m grateful that he’s helped me out this year.

“He’s [Eustace] done a great job with that horse [Gratifide]. Obviously, the blinkers have helped, so very happy on the last night to get a double.”

Kyrus Treasure made it two course and distance wins from two starts.

“He’s a horse who took a while to work things out and sort of understand the racing. But he’s found his niche here at the Valley, and he’s had two good draws and good rides, and things just worked out well,” Eustace said.

Luke Ferraris closed the term in triumphant fashion, combining with Tony Cruz to win the Class 4 Sweet Orange Handicap (1650m) on Shamz (The Autumn Sun), who ran third in the 2025 Waikato Guineas (Gr 2, 2000m) in New Zealand when he raced as Amazing Fluke for Tony Pike.

“It’s very nice, good to get one for Tony,” Ferraris said. “We haven’t teamed up much this season but hopefully that leads well into next season and I get a bit more support and I can ride a few more winners for him.”

Karis Teetan teamed with trainer Dennis Yip to claim the Class 3 Encountered Handicap (1650m) with Thriving Brothers (U S Navy Flag).
