Bargain buys strike at the top level

In a market where seven-figure yearlings command much of the attention, the 2025-26 racing season has provided another reminder that high-class racehorses are not found only at the top of the sale ring. Increasingly, they are not always found in a physical sale ring at all, with the digital market now a proven source of top-quality bloodstock.
A number of this season’s stakes winners in Australia were bought for $100,000 or less, turning modest outlays into black-type returns and, in some cases, life-changing results for connections.

The results sit neatly alongside the wider value-sire conversation. If breeders are weighing up where to find value before a foal is even conceived, buyers face the same challenge when that horse reaches the market. The market may be a powerful judge, but it is not infallible, and this season’s better-performing bargain buys show there remains room for good eyes, patience and a willingness to look beyond the obvious.
The most compelling examples are the Group 1 winners, with Inglis proving an excellent source for price point and return on investment, having produced several Group 1 winners through its yearling, Ready2Race and online platforms for $100,000 or less.
Probably the most notable of them is Sheza Alibi (Saxon Warrior), a $10,000 Inglis Digital purchase, she has provided the clearest return, winning the Randwick Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) and Doncaster Mile (Gr 1, 1600m) at Randwick. Offered by Middlebrook Valley Lodge, a farm that has built a reputation for raising elite stock on its rolling hills, in the 2023 Inglis June (Early) Online Sale, she was bought by Fred Noffke and has since won seven of her ten starts, earning more than $3.7 million. The Peter Moody and Katherine Coleman trained, three-year-old filly has built a formidable record, giving the public a new cult horse to follow.

Her rise also brings the commercial volatility of families into sharp focus. Her dam Sheza Gypsy (Shaft), a six-time winner, passed in twice on Inglis Digital before selling for just $1,250 in 2025, while Sheza Alibi’s younger half-brother Nomadic (King’s Legacy), now placed in the TL Baillieu Handicap (Gr 3, 1400m), made $160,000 at the Inglis Classic Yearling Sale. Value can shift quickly once performance starts to reframe a page.
Spicy Martini (Justify) gives Inglis Digital another major flagbearer. Bought by Edmonds Racing for just $8,000 from Coolmore Stud, one of the defining sources of top-level racing and breeding stock, in the 2023 Inglis March (Early) Online Sale, the mare has turned that modest outlay into earnings of more than $2.69 million. Trained by Toby Edmonds on the Gold Coast, she has won six of her 12 starts, headed by the Stradbroke Handicap (Gr 1, 1400m).
She also brings a deep page to the discussion, being by Triple Crown winner Justify (Scat Daddy) and out of the Redoute’s Choice mare Extra Olives, with Group 1-winning champion Alinghi (Encosta De Lago) appearing as her third dam. A low purchase price does not always mean a light page.
Top farms and professional preparers continue to produce top horses, even when the market does not initially price them that way. Libertad (Russian Revolution), winner of the Winterbottom Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m), was a $40,000 Inglis Classic Yearling Sale purchase from the Rheinwood Pastoral draft, a farm that has become an undeniable source of stakes success in recent years, including the Galaxy Handicap (Gr 1, 1100m) winner Private Harry (Harry Angel). Libertad later made $210,000 to Annabel Neasham Racing at the Inglis Ready2Race Sale and has since won five races and almost $1.7 million, with his record including the Winterbottom, Victory Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m), San Domenico Stakes (Gr 3, 1100m) and Kindergarten Stakes (Gr 3, 1100m). He will stand his first season at stud at Blue Gum Farm in Victoria this year at a fee of $9,000.
Streisand (Magnus) has been one of the most exciting two-year-olds of the season and another powerful advertisement for the sub-$100,000 market. Bought for $22,000 by Northmore and Waterford from Yarran Thoroughbreds at the 2024 Inglis Great Southern Weanling Sale, she was later resold for $100,000 to Shane McGrath Bloodstock and Clinton McDonald Racing from Northmore Thoroughbreds’ draft at the 2025 Inglis Premier Yearling Sale. Now racing for Yulong, the filly has already earned more than $2.42 million, winning the Blue Diamond Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) and Blue Diamond Prelude (Gr 2, 1100m), also finishing runner-up in the Golden Slipper Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m). While there was already black type in the family, Streisand is clearly the horse who has done most to elevate the page, her juvenile Group 1 success changing the commercial profile of the pedigree, with her dam Zouper Star (Zoustar) subsequently purchased by Yulong Investments for $800,000 at the 2026 Inglis Chairman’s Sale.
Idle Flyer (Dundeel) adds another Inglis-sourced Group 1 winner to the list. Bought by Matthew Smith Racing and Randwick Bloodstock Agency for $70,000 from Torryburn Stud’s draft at the 2023 Inglis Classic Yearling Sale, the mare has developed into a high-class performer for trainer Matthew Smith. She has won eight of her 15 starts and earned more than $1.27 million, with her Queen Of The Turf Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) victory at Randwick following wins in the Emancipation Stakes (Gr 2, 1500m) and Angst Stakes (Gr 3, 1600m). Her page is littered with Group 1 performers, with close relations including Tom Kitten (Harry Angel), Desert Lightning (Pride Of Dubai), Gathering (Tale Of The Cat) and international elite-level mare In Italian (Dubawi).
They were joined at the top level by Sepals (Calyx), an $80,000 Inglis Classic Yearling Sale purchase for Cliff Brown Racing from Vinery Stud’s draft. The gelding’s Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) victory at Caulfield came from the first foal out of What’s New (Casino Prince), Singapore’s champion four-year-old and older mare of 2019, although the page may have appeared light to sections of the market at the time.
New Zealand has also played its part in producing bargain Group 1 winners. Wigmore (Sweynesse), winner of the South Australian Derby (Gr 1, 2518m), was bought by K T Myers for just NZ$25,000 at the 2024 NZB Karaka Book 2 Sale before progressing through New Zealand and joining Phillip Stokes in Australia. The gelding has earned more than NZ$64,000 and A$552,000, having also finished fourth in the New Zealand Derby (Gr 1, 2400m). His dam Del Mondo (More Than Ready) had already produced New Zealand Cup (Gr 3, 3200m) winner Mondorani (Burgundy), while his third dam is VRC Oaks (Gr 1, 2500m) and 1,000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) winner Arborea (Imperial Prince).
Globe (Charm Spirit) offered another striking example. Bought by J Naito for NZ$22,000 at the 2020 NZB Karaka Book 2 Sale, the gelding turned that modest yearling price into victory in the Might And Power Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m) at Caulfield, defeating Treasurethe Moment (Alabama Express) by three lengths. Trained by Mick Price and Michael Kent Jnr, he has now won six races and more than $1.2 million, with his record also including the Cranbourne Cup (Listed, 1600m). His unraced dam Bonnie Doon (Don Eduardo) is a sister to dual Group 1 winner Booming.
One clear theme is that quality bloodstock continues to come from quality sources and proper, deep pedigrees. The price point may have been modest, but many of the best performers were offered by proven farms, professional preparers and respected vendors, and came from families with the depth to support high-level performance. Value is not always found by looking away from quality, but by recognising it before the wider market does.
