Australian Connections to the European Stallion Ranks

Night of Thunder (Credit: Darley)

Look through Europe's leading stallion ranks and, from an Australian perspective, there is considerably more familiarity than might first appear.

The names may belong to the European stallion landscape, but many of the bloodlines certainly don't feel foreign to Australian breeders.

Dubawi (Dubai Millennium), Shamardal (Giant's Causeway), Iffraaj (Zafonic), Galileo (Sadler's Wells), High Chaparral (Sadler's Wells) and Scat Daddy (Johannesburg), along with our own Choisir (Danehill Dancer), are all represented through stallions prominent in the European ranks, with their bloodlines having established important connections to Australia and New Zealand.

What's On

Rather than simply telling us which stallions are succeeding in Britain, Ireland and Europe, the rankings provide another way of looking at bloodlines Australian and New Zealand breeders have been trying to access for years.

Some were identified early and succeeded here. Others came and went before their full value was apparent. Some have returned through sons, while others are now being pursued through the next available branch of the sire line.

That connection is perhaps most obvious through Dubawi.

His sons are increasingly important internationally and Australia has been attempting to tap into that influence through horses including Too Darn Hot (Dubawi) and Ghaiyyath (Dubawi).

Then there is Shamardal.

His influence has reached Australasia directly and indirectly through horses including Lope de Vega, Blue Point and Pinatubo, while Lope de Vega's son Lucky Vega now stands at Yulong and his WA-based son Gingerbread Man stands at Yarradale.

Iffraaj provides another connection. He himself shuttled to New Zealand, while his outstanding son Wootton Bassett later shuttled to Australia.

High Chaparral is an even more established example. His Australian legacy can now be seen through significant sires including So You Think, Dundeel, Ace High and Toronado.

The Scat Daddy line provides another fascinating comparison. No Nay Never spent four seasons covering substantial books in Australia and produced a 63.7 per cent winners-to-runners ratio, including Group 1 winner Madame Pommery, while Justify subsequently demonstrated just how potent that sire line could be in this hemisphere, with a 64.3 per cent winners-to-runners ratio and a strong list of stakes winners that includes Group 1 heroine Spicy Martini.

The pattern shows how consistently the many Australian and New Zealand stallion farms have looked towards the leading international sire lines for blood that might work here. Coolmore, Godolphin, Arrowfield, Swettenham, Woodside Park and leading New Zealand studs such as Cambridge Stud and Windsor Park have repeatedly gone back to these families, trying different sons and different branches of sire lines whose performance suggests they have something worth pursuing.

There is also traffic in the opposite direction, although not much.

Starspangledbanner (Choisir), the Australian-bred son of Choisir (Danehill Dancer), continues to make his mark on the European stallion ranks, highlighted this season by Precise, winner of the Coronation Stakes (Gr.1, 1m), and Gstaad, winner of the Irish 2,000 Guineas (Gr.1, 1m). His success is an important reminder that the connection between the two breeding industries is not simply a story of Australia searching Europe for stallions. Australian speed has also travelled north and left its mark on the European stallion ranks.

Identifying the right bloodline is one thing. Giving it enough opportunity to establish itself is another.

Dark Angel (Acclamation) is an interesting example. He was already well into his stud career in Europe before a son was sent south specifically to test the line in the Australian market. Harry Angel (Dark Angel) has since demonstrated its compatibility with the Australian racing environment, and another opportunity arrives in 2026 through Charyn at Cambridge Stud.

The shuttle system has given Australian and New Zealand breeders extraordinary access to stallions that otherwise would have been beyond the reach of the vast majority, often providing access to elite international performers at a considerably lower price point than many of our own retiring first-season stallions.

But it has also compressed the period in which those stallions are expected to prove themselves commercially. Breeders may gain access to world-class bloodlines, but the market can begin passing judgement before their first Australian-bred progeny have had the opportunity to fully establish themselves on the racetrack.

A stallion can cover several Southern Hemisphere books before his first runners have provided meaningful evidence. His first European runners may have appeared, but commercially that evidence can be largely immaterial to the Australian yearling market. Breeders, stallion farms and buyers are therefore making decisions with incomplete information and the market can make those decisions particularly unforgiving.

Ghaiyyath (Dubawi) is a timely example.

The son of Dubawi covered 103 mares in his first Australian season in 2021, followed by 98 in 2022, 97 in 2023 and 79 in 2024. With support gradually declining, he did not return to Australia for the 2025 season.

Yet while his commercial momentum was heading in one direction, his runners were beginning to take him in another.

Ghaiyyath currently sits prominently among Australia's leading sires by stakes wins, with five stakes winners and eight stakes victories from 58 runners in the 2025-26 season. That performance has helped spur his return to Australia for 2026, when he is advertised at $88,000.

A stallion who left Australia following a season at $27,500 returns at more than three times that fee after his progeny demonstrated their ability on the racetrack.

It doesn't necessarily mean breeders were wrong to move away from him. They operate in a commercial environment and have to respond to what buyers are prepared to purchase. But it does expose one of the tensions within the shuttle system: what the yearling market wants from a stallion at one point in time and what that stallion ultimately delivers on the racetrack are not always the same thing.

Night Of Thunder (Dubawi) is perhaps the most striking example when Australia's former shuttle stallions are compared with the current European sire rankings.

He stood just one season in Australia, covering 96 mares in 2016 at $16,500, before returning to Ireland. He arrived early in his stud career, well before the scale of what he would become in Europe was apparent.

What he left behind was remarkably effective.

Night Of Thunder has had 73 runners for 59 winners in Australia, a truly phenomenal 80.8 per cent winners-to-runners rate, producing nine stakes winners, including four Group winners, and more than A$13 million in earnings. His Australian-bred performers include Queensland Derby winner Kukeracha, Cherry Tortoni, Rumbled Again, A Beautiful Night and Rockribbed.

Our research uncovered 15 individual Night Of Thunder yearlings across the Australian and New Zealand sales from his 2016 season. They averaged approximately $47,700 with a top price of $130,000. There was little in those figures to suggest Australian breeders had briefly possessed access to a stallion who would eventually become one of Europe's elite sires.

Night Of Thunder leads the 2026 European sire standings by prizemoney and sits second by black-type winners. He now stands at a 2026 fee of €200,000.

His unbeaten three-year-old son Bow Echo (Night Of Thunder) has emerged as one of Europe's defining horses of 2026, completing a remarkable Group 1 sequence through the 2000 Guineas, St James's Palace Stakes and Sussex Stakes.

Australia had direct access to Night Of Thunder before his true value as a stallion was apparent; by the time the evidence arrived, he was gone.

Invincible Spirit (Green Desert) shuttled to Chatswood Stud in Victoria before his rising Northern Hemisphere reputation made him increasingly valuable and ultimately brought his Australian shuttle career to an end. Among the Australian horses conceived during that period was I Am Invincible (Invincible Spirit), whose extraordinary importance to Australian breeding was still years from becoming apparent.

No Nay Never provides another variation. The son of Scat Daddy covered four substantial Australian books; 101 mares in 2016, 109 in 2017, 98 in 2018 and 83 in 2019. while his fee climbed from $11,000 to $44,000 over the same period.

There was evidence his progeny could work in this part of the world, too, although the results differed markedly on either side of the Tasman. In Australia, No Nay Never has produced three black-type winners from 152 runners, headed by Thousand Guineas (Gr.1, 1600m) winner Madame Pommery. In New Zealand, his Southern Hemisphere-bred progeny produced 16 winners from just 22 runners, including four stakes winners and two Group winners.

No Nay Never ceased shuttling after 2019 and has since developed into one of Europe's significant sources of speed. This season alone he has produced 1000 Guineas (Gr.1, 1m) winner True Love and King Charles III Stakes (Gr.1, 5f) winner Mission Central, alongside Coventry Stakes (Gr.2, 6f) winner Great Barrier Reef and Albany Stakes (Gr.3, 6f) winner Libertango at Royal Ascot.

Unlike Night Of Thunder, Australian breeders gave No Nay Never meaningful opportunities across four seasons. His emergence as one of Europe's most important sources of speed simply came later.

There are examples in the other direction as well.

Perugino (Danzig) was brought back to Australia after the emergence of Testa Rossa (Perugino), but his return did not produce another horse of comparable influence. A second opportunity doesn't necessarily guarantee the same result.

That makes Ghaiyyath's return particularly interesting. Australia is receiving something it has not always had with these stallions: a second chance. But will the market be forgiving of the season away, or will the gap test just how short commercial memory can be?

Maurice (Screen Hero) offers an imperfect but useful recent comparison. A break in his shuttle pattern interrupted the flow of Australian-bred progeny at a point when, commercially, every runner counts. Each crop provides another opportunity for winners and stakes horses to reinforce a stallion's reputation in the sales ring, and a missing season means fewer of those reminders. Maurice's subsequent recovery suggests that momentum can be rebuilt, but it also illustrates what is at stake when that continuity is broken.

The incoming group is not short on credentials. Delacroix won the Eclipse S. (Gr.1, 1m2f); Charyn swept the Queen Anne S. (Gr.1, 1m), Prix Jacques le Marois (Gr.1, 1600m) and Queen Elizabeth II S. (Gr.1, 1m); Laurel River won the Dubai World Cup (Gr.1, 2000m) by eight lengths; Diego Velazquez won the Prix Jacques le Marois (Gr.1, 1600m); and Lead Artist took the Lockinge S. (Gr.1, 1m).

There are some familiar names sitting behind them.

Two sons of Dubawi, a son of Wootton Bassett, and representatives of Dark Angel, Into Mischief and Frankel will be available to breeders in this part of the world. They arrive at a time when many of those same bloodlines are prominent in the European stallion ranks that prompted this discussion in the first place.

Nobody can suggest one of them will become the next Night Of Thunder, Lope de Vega or No Nay Never. Stallion selection has never been that simple, and the Perugino example is a useful reminder that hindsight can make the process appear much easier than it really is.

But history does provide a warning about judging them too quickly.

Breeders have to produce a horse the market wants, stallion farms have to fill books for their next generation and buyers inevitably move towards what is fashionable. Those commercial realities are genuine.

So too is the evidence sitting in the European sire tables: Australia has already encountered many of these bloodlines and, in some cases, had only brief access to the stallion before understanding what it had.

In 2026 another group have just arrived on the scene.

Not all will necessarily succeed, and history tells us there is no simple way of knowing which will. The more interesting question is whether Australia will still have access to the ones that do.

Morning Briefing

Immortal Bliss claims Belmont Newmarket

Immortal Bliss (I Am Immortal) continued his strong winter campaign with a dominant victory in Saturday’s Belmont Newmarket (Listed, 1200m), defeating Snowdome (Rommel) by almost three lengths. The Dan Morton-trained five-year-old handled the testing conditions to record his eighth career victory and second at stakes level, having also won the Beaufine Stakes (Listed, 1000m) when resuming in July. Immortal Bliss has now won eight of his 21 starts, with a further seven placings and earnings of over $400k. He is the third stakes winner for Swettenham Stud-based stallion I Am Immortal (I Am Invincible). A homebred for owner Sam Scuderi, Immortal Bliss began his career in South Australia with Peter Hardacre, winning twice as a two-year-old before later transferring to Morton in Western Australia. He has continued to progress through the grades for his new stable and shapes as a potential contender for the $1 million Golden Saddle later in the preparation. Immortal Bliss is the second foal and only runner from his dam, who was purchased for $5,000 through a Magic Millions Online Sale in July 2021.

Revengeance return hinges on Tuesday gallop

Golden Gift (1100m) winner Revengeance (Hellbent) will be nominated for Saturday’s Rosebud (Listed, 1100m) at Rosehill. The Tulloch Lodge three year old has completed two trials, having missed the autumn after surgery to remove bone chips from a knee. Should connections bypass the Rosebud, Revengeance may instead trial at Randwick on Friday before resuming in the San Domenico Stakes (Gr 3, 1100m) on August 29. A $100k purchase by Darby Racing from Davali Thorughbreds at the 2025 Classic Yearling Sale. Revengeance finished third in the Breeders’ Plate (Gr 3, 1000m) on debut before winning the Golden Gift at his second start and emerging as an early Golden Slipper (Gr 1, 1200m) contender. Bott indicated the Golden Rose Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) would be a spring target for the colt. Stablemate Eviction Notice (Stay Inside), runner up in the Silver Slipper Stakes (Gr 2, 1100m) as a juvenile, will also be nominated for the Rosebud. He has placed in two starts this preparation.

Oliveanotherday builds towards spring return

Oliveanotherday (Credit: Racing Photos)

Wangoom Handicap (Listed, 1200m) winner Oliveanotherday (Nicconi) will jump-out at Casterton on Monday. The gelding has not been seen publicly since winning the Warrnambool feature in May, taking his record to five victories from seven starts. A homebred for Andrew Harrison, Oliveanotherday has attracted interest from Everest (Gr 1, 1200m) slot holders, although Dabernig is keen to assess the promising sprinter’s early spring form before considering loftier targets. Following Monday’s jump-out, Oliveanotherday is expected to have another hit-out at Caulfield Heath on August 19 before a likely return to racing at Caulfield on August 29.

Shadhavar set for Regal Roller

The Tom Dabernig-trained mare Shadhavar (Pride Of Dubai) will begin her spring campaign in Saturday’s Regal Roller Stakes (Listed, 1200m) at Caulfield. The five year old was unbeaten in two starts during the autumn, winning first-up at Murray Bridge before claiming The Matrice S. (Listed, 1200m) at Morphettville. Connections considered extending that campaign to the Robert Sangster Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) but elected to spell Shadhavar rather than make a third trip to Adelaide during the preparation.

Wild Ruler filly returns in Rosebud

Hawkesbury trainer Blake Ryan will use Saturday’s The Rosebud (Listed, 1100m) at Rosehill as a guide to Queen Regent’s (Wild Ruler) spring ambitions. The three year old filly resumes after winning the Woodlands Stakes (Listed, 1100m) at Scone at her second career start. Queen Regent spent just three weeks in the paddock and has had one trial ahead of her return, finishing sixth over 800 metres at Warwick Farm behind fellow Rosebud contender Hostwin King (King's Legacy). Purchased by Ryan for $40,000 at the 2025 HTBA Yearling Sale, the filly went back through the Inglis Ready2Race Sale last October. Queen Regent has won one of her two starts and will attempt to further enhance her black-type credentials in a strong renewal of The Rosebud.

Profoundly retired after suspensory injury

Australian Oaks (Gr 1, 2400m) runner-up Profoundly (Farnan) has been retired after suffering a serious suspensory injury last week. A $65k purchase by Freedman from the Sledmere draft at the 2024 Classic Sale. Profoundly enjoyed a breakthrough autumn campaign, winning the Adrian Knox Stakes (Gr 3, 2000m) before finishing runner-up to Ohope Wins (Ocean Park) in the Australian Oaks at Randwick. She will now head to stud.

Williams claims sixth Scobie Breasley Medal

Champion jockey Craig Williams has claimed his sixth Scobie Breasley Medal at the 2026 Victorian Racing Awards, completing a late-season surge to defeat Jamie Mott. Williams trailed Mott by one vote entering the final month of the 2025–26 season but collected 11 votes in July to finish on 52, five clear of Mott. Damian Lane was third on 37. The success comes 20 years after Williams won his first Scobie Breasley Medal in 2006 and adds to subsequent victories in 2007, 2008, 2009 and 2017. Williams also secured his tenth Victorian Metropolitan Jockeys’ Premiership, equalling Damien Oliver’s record. Alabama Lass firms for Foxbridge

Group 1 performer Alabama Lass (Alabama Express) strengthened her claims for the Foxbridge Plate (Gr 2, 1200m) with a comfortable trial victory at Te Rapa on Saturday. The Ken and Bev Kelso-trained mare led throughout under Michael McNab in the 1050-metre heat. Alabama Lass endured a frustrating campaign last season despite beginning with a runner-up finish in the Moir Stakes (Gr 1, 1000m) at The Valley. She subsequently finished last in the Manikato Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) and seventh in the Railway (Gr 1, 1200m), before dislodging Samantha Collett after striking the rail during the King’s Plate (Gr 3, 1200m). The four-year-old will resume in the Foxbridge Plate at Te Rapa in a fortnight with connections likely to target the Proisir Plate (Gr 1, 1400m) at Ellerslie on September 5.

Dusty Road back to winning form at Te Rapa

Dusty Road (Shamexpress) returned to winning form at Te Rapa on Saturday, strengthening his prospects of another tilt at the Foxbridge Plate (Gr 2, 1200m) a race in which Dusty Road finished third last season. The Graeme Cameron-trained seven-year-old took out the Cambridge Stud Proud Horse Ambulance Supporters Open (1200m), defeating Bella Timing (Time Test) and Little Bit Of Love (Time Test). The gelding won an 1100-metre trial at Te Rapa on Tuesday before backing up four days later. Cameron will now consider returning to the Foxbridge Plate at Te Rapa on August 22.

22 for Bolt d’Oro

Former Spendthrift Australia shuttler Bolt d’Oro (Medaglia D’Oro) sired his 22nd stakes winner when From Dusk landed the CBC Sho (Gr 3, 1200m) in Japan on Sunday. The six-year-old entire, who is out of Foolish Cause (Giant’s Causeway), recorded his third victory from 27 starts when completing the 1200 metres in 1:06.5. From Dusk provided jockey Yuji Nakai with his first win at Group level. Bolt d’Oro shuttled to Spendthrift Australia for three seasons between 2019 and 2021.

Mosheen filly adds second win in Japan

Moreton Island (Maurice), a daughter of four-time Group 1 winner Mosheen (Fastnet Rock), recorded the second victory of her career when successful in an Allowance race (2000m) at Niigata on the weekend. Bred by Northern Farm and trained by Takahisa Tezuka for Silk Racing Co, the three-year-old filly has now won twice from five starts. Moreton Island had already earned black type earlier this season when finishing runner-up in the Sweetpea Stakes (Listed, 1800m) in May. She is out of former Joint Top Filly on the 2010–11 Australasian Two-Year-Old Classification Mosheen. A $250,000 as a yearling, Mosheen won on debut before finishing runner-up to Sepoy (Elusive Quality) in the Golden Slipper Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) at her second start. She subsequently won the VRC Oaks (Gr 1, 2500m), Australian Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m), Randwick Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) and Vinery Stud Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m).

SA: Vercingetorix shares headline Klawervlei dispersal

Eight shares in champion sire Vercingetorix (Silvano) headline Monday’s landmark Klawervlei Stud Dispersal Sale, which shapes as one of the most significant bloodstock auctions staged in South Africa. The stallion shares will open the sale, with Vercingetorix expected to attract significant interest given his limited availability and consistently strong demand from breeders. Shares in several other leading stallions will also be offered. Following the stallion shares, 89 broodmares from prominent South African families will go through the ring. The catalogue reflects Klawervlei’s considerable influence on South African breeding. Most are in foal and due to produce shortly after the auction, providing buyers with immediate breeding prospects. Klawervlei Stud, South Africa’s six-time champion breeder had been acquired by prominent businessman and leading racehorse owner, Laurence Wernars. “We are purchasing a beautifully equipped farm with its assets and equipment, not the existing bloodstock," Wernars said at the time, “We currently have 54 mares spread around the country and most of them will be relocated to Klawervlei. We hold stallion shares in many of the leading Cape-based sires, so our mares will be kept busy. Klawervlei will continue operating as a boarding facility following the sale, with broodmares belonging to outside clients remaining on the property.

US:Pletcher reaches 6,000-win milestone

Hall of Fame trainer Todd Pletcher recorded his 6,000th North American victory when Versailles Road (Quality Road) won the final race at Saratoga on August 8. The milestone made Pletcher just the seventh trainer to reach 6,000 wins, joining Steve Asmussen, Jack Van Berg, King Leatherbury, Dale Baird, Jerry Hollendorfer and Scott Lake. Pletcher is North America’s all-time leading trainer by prize-money, with his runners having earned approximately US$526 million.

US: Sovereignty back to best in Whitney

Reigning US Horse of the Year Sovereignty (Into Mischief) returned to his brilliant best with a dominant victory in the Whitney Stakes (Gr 1, 9f) at Saratoga. The Godolphin homebred entered the US$1 million feature having finished runner-up in the Oaklawn Handicap (Gr 2) before running third in the Stephen Foster Stakes (Gr 1, 1 ⅛ m). The four-year-old rediscovered the form that carried him to victories in last year’s Kentucky Derby (Gr 1, 1 ¼ m), Belmont Stakes (Gr 1, 1 ½ m) and Travers Stakes (Gr 1, 1 ¼ m), producing a powerful finish to defeat top-class mare Nitrogen (Medaglia d'Oro) by four and three-quarter lengths. The victory was Sovereignty’s seventh from 12 starts and lifted his career earnings to US$6,876,550. Whitney success also secured Sovereignty an automatic berth in the Breeders’ Cup Classic (Gr 1, 1 ¼ m) at Keeneland on October 31. Trainer Bill Mott indicated Sovereignty is likely to have one more start beforehand in the Jockey Club Gold Cup Stakes (Gr 1, 1 ¼ m), where he could clash with reigning Breeders’ Cup Classic winner Forever Young (Real Steel).

US: 35 for Too Darn Hot

British-trained Glacius (Too Darn Hot) provided trainer Hugo Palmer with his first North American victory when landing Saturday’s Saratoga Derby (Gr 1, 1m 1½f) at Saratoga. Sent out at 9-1 for his first start outside Britain, the Ibrahim Araci homebred raced prominently before defeating West End Kid (Twirling Candy) by a length and a quarter. Belmont Derby (Gr 1, 1 ½ m) winner Title Role (Too Darn Hot) finished third, with favourite Remember Mamba (Kitten’s Joy) fourth. The victory was Glacius’ second from six starts, having won on debut at Newmarket as a juvenile. He had subsequently earned Group black type at Royal Ascot in June before finishing third in the Gala Stakes (Listed, 10f) at Sandown last month. Glacius will now return to Palmer’s Cheshire stable, although connections are considering another trip to the United States for the Nashville Derby Invitational Stakes (Gr 2, 1 5/16 m) at Kentucky Downs on September 5. The colt is the eighth Group One winner by Darley stallion Too Darn Hot (Dubawi) and out of the Fastnet Rock (Danehill) mare Predawn.

US: Explora lands first Grade 1 in Test Stakes

Explora (Blame) secured the first top-level victory of her career with a dominant five-length success in Saturday’s Test Stakes (Gr 1, 7f) at Saratoga. Trained by Bob Baffert, the three-year-old filly recorded her sixth victory from ten starts and enhanced her credentials for the Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Sprint (Gr 1). Explora finished runner-up in last year’s Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies (Gr 1) before running fourth in the Kentucky Oaks (Gr 1, 9f) earlier this season. Percy’s Bar (Upstart) finished five lengths away in second, with Goodall (Yaupon) another length and three-quarters back in third. Explora was purchased for US$350,000 from the Crane Thoroughbred Services draft at the 2025 Fasig-Tipton Midlantic May Two-Year-Olds in Training Sale and has now earned US$1,534,415. Explora is the eighth indiviual Group One winner for Blame (Arch) and is the fifth foal and and first stakes winner out of Collections Choice (Bernadini).

FR: 122 for Frankel

Mazzala (3 g ex Celtic, by Speightstown) became the 122nd individual Group winner for Frankel when maintaining his unbeaten record in the Prix de Reux (Gr 3, 2500m) at Deauville on Saturday. Trained by Yann Barberot and ridden by Alexis Pouchin, the Wertheimer brothers’ homebred raced prominently before taking the lead inside the final 200 metres and defeating Parachutiste (Dubawi) by a length and a quarter, with fellow Frankel gelding Tenability third. Mazzala has now won all four of his starts, having already earned black-type with victory in the Prix Frédéric de Lagrange (Listed, 2400m) at Vichy on his previous appearance. He is out of the Speightstown mare Celtic and descends from dual Grade 1 winner Lady Of Shamrock (Scat Daddy). Frankel (Galileo) stands at Juddmonte’s Banstead Manor Stud in Newmarket.

FR: 25 for Sioux Nation

Drazinda (2 f ex Darbanza, by Siyouni) became the 25th individual stakes winner for Sioux Nation when landing the Prix de la Vallée d’Auge (Listed, 1000m) on Saturday at Deauville. Trained by Francis-Henri Graffard and ridden by Mickaël Barzalona, the grey filly was held up at the rear before making smooth progress inside the final 400 metres. She struck the front inside the final 100 metres and ran on to defeat fellow Sioux Nation filly Vollering by three-quarters of a length. The victory was Drazinda’s second from four starts, having won on debut at Chantilly before finishing second in the Prix Yacowlef (Listed, 1000m) on her previous start. Bred and owned by Princess Zahra Aga Khan, Drazinda is out of the Siyouni mare Darbanza. Former shuttle stallion Sioux Nation (Scat Daddy) stands at Castlehyde Stud in Ireland for €37,500 (approx. A$66,000).

FR: First for Victor Ludorum

Victoire Magique (3 c ex Purple Magic, by Rip Van Winkle) provided Victor Ludorum with his first stakes winner when landing the Prix Michel Houyvet (Listed, 3000m) at Deauville. Trained by Amy Murphy and ridden by Cristian Demuro, the three-year-old made his challenge on the outside before taking a narrow lead inside the final 100 metres and staying on to defeat Aeronef (Sea The Stars) by a neck. The victory was Victoire Magique’s second from nine starts and followed his runner-up finish in the Prix du Lys (Gr 3, 2400m) at Chantilly. He is out of the four-time-winning Rip Van Winkle mare Purple Magic and comes from the family of Summer Mile (Gr 2, 1m) winner Cesare. Victor Ludorum (Shamardal), winner of the Poule d’Essai des Poulains (Gr 1, 1600m), is a former Australian shuttler. He first shuttled to Australia in 2022 and stood for four consecutive seasons at Darley’s Kelvinside Stud, NSW, covering his final Australian book in 2025 at A$11,000. He will not return to Australia for the 2026 breeding season.

FR: 96 for Siyouni

Canneza (4 m ex Canndera, by Dalakhani) became the 96th individual stakes winner for Siyouni when causing a 50-1 upset in the Prix Isola Bella (Listed, 1500m) at Deauville. Trained by L Blanchet and ridden by Pierre-Charles Boudot, the four-year-old defeated Abbey Road (Zarak) by a short neck, with Just A Girl (Bobby’s Kitten) another length and a quarter away in third. Bred by Haras de S.A. Aga Khan, Canneza is out of Listed-winning Dalakhani mare Canndera, whose two victories included the Prix Scaramouche (Listed, 2800m). The family has considerable depth, with Canndera a sister to dual Group 2 winner Candarliya, while her half-brother Candelari (Frankel) won the Prix Vicomtesse Vigier (Gr 1, 3100m) in 2025. Siyouni (Pivotal), stands at Haras de Bonneval in France for €150,000 (Approx A$245,000).

FR: Japanese pair arrive in Deauville for Jacques le Marois

Japanese-trained pair Sixpence (Kizuna) and Strauss (Maurice) arrived at Deauville on Sunday ahead of their intended starts in the Prix Jacques le Marois (Gr 1, 1600m) on Sunday, 16 August. Sixpence heads to France as a top-level winner, having landed the Yasuda Kinen (Gr 1, 1600m) in Tokyo earlier this season.

Unbeaten Behrayna likely to be retired

Unbeaten multiple Group winner Behrayna (Sea The Moon) is likely to be retired after suffering a setback following her victory in the Prix de Malleret (Gr 2, 2400m) at ParisLongchamp. The Aga Khan Studs-bred filly won all four starts for trainer Francis-Henri Graffard, beginning with a debut success at ParisLongchamp in April before progressing through the Prix de la Seine (Listed, 2200m), Prix de Royaumont (Gr 3, 2400m) and Prix de Malleret. Behrayna is out of Behnasa (Dansili), a half-sister to Grand Prix de Paris (Gr 1, 2400m) winner and sire Behkabad (Cape Cross) and the dam of three stakes horses from three to race.
