Wigs out to make a Big impression in the Vain Stakes

A pair of three-year-old colts harbouring Group 1 ambitions will headline Team Stokes’ spring assault, with Big Wigs (Gold Standard) forming an advance party when he contests Saturday’s Vain Stakes (Gr 3, 1100m) at Caulfield.

Big Wigs rose to prominence as a juvenile when he carried the famous Makybe colours to victory in The VOBIS Platinum Showdown (1200m), sparking scenes of cathartic joy in the mounting yard for Tony Santic and his team who had lost the eponymous farm’s mighty mare a matter of days before the $1 million contest.

Big Wigs’ stablemate Stretan Ruler (Wild Ruler) scaled even great heights last season, winning the Silver Slipper (Gr 2, 1100m) and registering a pair of stakes placings to ride on the coat-tails of his big sister Stretan Angel (Harry Angel), whose formidable feats on the racetrack persuaded Arrowfield to acquire her for $1.6 million at the Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale.

What's On

Stretan Ruler will campaign predominantly in Sydney this spring with a view to peaking in the Golden Rose Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) at Rosehill, where victory would secure his future at stud.

That primary aim is the same for Big Wigs but he is more likely to remain at home in Victoria, with his potential grand final options headlined by the Caulfield Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) – a race which marked his sire’s swansong before he was whisked off to stud.

The Guineas is a lofty target for a colt whose sole win to date came in a juvenile race restricted to the progeny of VOBIS Sires stallions, but the way he cruised to the line under a hold in a recent jumpout behind Lindsay Park’s hard-ridden stakes winner Machine Gun Gracie (Maschino) would indicate that he is in for a profitable preparation.

Tommy Stokes, who officially joined his father Phil on the training ticket at the start of the season, was taken with that performance and believes that the unassuming colt – who is on the third line of Vain Stakes betting at $6.50 – has returned from his winter spell a much more switched-on character.

“He’s come back in really good order and that trial would suggest that he’s going super,” Stokes told ANZ News.

“He’s matured in every way during his time off, even though he’s still not a big colt he’s definitely strengthened up physically, and his riders at home have recently noticed that he seems much more focused now. It’s a fairly big ask to kick him off in a Group 3 race first-up, but we were pretty keen to find out at the start of his prep what sort of heights he might reach.

“We threw a nomination in for the Golden Rose, because like Stretan Ruler he’s up and ready at the right time. If he was to come out and win or even run really well on Saturday, it’s a path we might take with him but he’s more likely to race in Melbourne this spring and hopefully we can get him to the Caulfield Guineas.

“If he keeps progressing and doing the right things, then we’d like to think he could be competitive in those sorts of races. We had planned to run him in the Sires’ Produce after his win in The Showdown, but he came down with a bit of a virus so we had to pull up stumps and send him to the paddock.

“It was obviously disappointing at the time, but in hindsight it may have been a blessing in disguise as you can sometimes push these two-year-olds too hard and come unstuck. He’s had a good long break and has come back in with a real spring in his step, so we’re looking forward to seeing what he can do.”

Widden’s proprietor Antony Thompson and his team will also be closely monitoring Saturday’s action at Caulfield, in the hope that Big Wigs can give his sire Gold Standard (Sebring) a very timely boost. With all due respect to the Riddells Creek resident, despite flying out of the blocks with a Group 1 winner from his first crop in Sheeza Belter, Gold Standard is yet to fully live up to his name in the breeding barn.

However, he enjoyed some resurgent results at the sales in 2025 and now has a bumper batch of three-year-olds set to hit the racetrack including Alkira, the half-sister to stakes winner Zany Girl (Needs Further), who was acquired by Denise Martin’s Star Thoroughbreds for $80,000 from the Armidale Stud draft at the Magic Millions Tasmanian Yearling Sale.

Big Wigs’ part-owner Daniel Gangi was unaware of the striking black colt’s relatively modest pedigree – the dam Nooks And Crannies (Denman) won three of eight starts for Toby Edmonds – when he first clapped eyes on him as a weanling during the course of a boozy barbeque at Makybe Stud just over two years ago.

But it was love at first sight for the hobby breeder, and after brokering a deal that night with Santic and syndicating him to some friends and family, Gangi has since jumped into the ownership of the colt’s juvenile half-sister by Yulong’s shuttler Lucky Vega (Lope De Vega). The filly, who has been named Miss Big Wigs, has been broken in and is currently spelling at Makybe ahead of her first preparation with the Stokes stable.

Having missed Big Wigs’ rampaging defeat of subsequent Group 1 placegetter Miss Chanel (Tagaloa) in The Showdown, due to a pre-planned trip to check in on some of his broodmares at Waikato Stud, Gangi made certain he would be available for the colt’s return to action. Up to 40 owners – including Santic – are set to descend on Caulfield, with Gangi vowing to celebrate in style if the colt can kick off his campaign with another bold display under Lachie Neindorf.

“I’ve got a flight to New Zealand early on Sunday morning so if Big Wigs can win again, I might be going straight from the celebrations to the airport,” said the 50-year-old, who runs the Gangi family’s large-scale electrical business in Melbourne.

“I know Tony is very excited and we all are, because his win in The Showdown was pretty electric. We should probably keep a lid on our expectations since he’s first-up from a spell against a pretty hot field, but I’ve never had to pay a bill for a dream.

“If we’re dreaming big, then the Caulfield Guineas is the main target. Obviously at this stage we don’t know whether or not he’ll get a mile, but he relaxes well and his pedigree would suggest that he might.

“It’s been unbelievable to share the experience with friends and family, and it’s a privilege to race a horse in the Makybe colours. Hopefully we can have some more fun with the colt over the spring, and then with the half-sister when she makes it to the track as a three-year-old.”

Forest View dispersal features in Magic Millions Digital Sale

Stakes-winning mares and an unreserved draft of yearlings from Forest View Farm headline the Magic Millions Digital Sale, which opened for bidding on Friday. Breeding prospects include stakes winners Twain’s Angel (Toronado) and Mission Of Love (The Mission), alongside multiple city winner and Group performer Emmadella (All Too Hard). Among the broodmares is Pellicle (Sepoy), whose first foal Live To Tell (Territories) won at Group 3 level and finished runner-up in the Karrakatta Plate (Gr 2, 1200m). Pellicle is offered in foal to Darley stallion Broadsiding (Too Darn Hot) and comes from the family of Group 1 winners Tentyris (Street Boss), Baraqiel (Snitzel) and Autumn Angel (The Autumn Sun) Emmadella, offered as Lot 18, is a multiple metropolitan winner who finished fourth in the Winx Guineas (Gr 3, 1600m). The Forest View Farm Unreserved Dispersal also features 13 yearlings by stallions including Toronado (High Chapparal), Playing God (Blackfriars), Spirit Of Boom (Sequalo) and State Of Rest (Starspangledbanner), offering potential pinhooking prospects for the 2027 yearling sales. All Forest View yearlings will have x-rays available with summary reports on request. The draft also includes four two-year-olds by Capitalist (Written Tycoon), Splintex (Snitzel), Long Leaf (Fastnet Rock) and Lightsaber (Zoustar). Bidding closes from 12pm AEST on Wednesday, August 19.

Pinstriped bidding to go one better in P.B. Lawrence

Pinstriped (Credit: Racing Photos)

Having had three previous attempts at the race, including for a pair of second-placed finishes, the Enver Jusufovic-trained Pinstriped (Street Boss) will bid to make it fourth time lucky in Saturday's P.B. Lawrence Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) at Caulfield. Mr Brightside (Bullbars) defeated Pinstriped in the 2023 edition, while Gentleman Roy (So You Think) got the better of him in 2024, and he ran seventh in the contest last year. The now eight-year-old gelding returned with a fourth placing at Caulfield on July 11 behind Coeur Volante (Proisir). "It was encouraging that it was the first time, for a while, that he's really hit the line and gone through the line," Jusufovic said. "He had 62 kilos, first-up after a long break. I thought his run was definitely a passmark. Rather than give him three jump-outs like I normally do and go first-up over 1400 metres, I thought this was a good time to give him a start in restricted class and see how he performed. The pace was moderate as he usually needs a good tempo like when he won the Memsie he had Pride Of Jenni leading. That's advantageous for him, but it was a good starting point for him and importantly he came through it well."

Confederation to begin season at Caulfield

Chris Waller has decided to start the campaign of Confederation (Wootton Bassett) in Melbourne, with the champion trainer having a bunch of three-year-olds to kick off. Hidrix (Extreme Choice), Central Europe (Frankel) and Striking Alibi (Hanseatic) will represent the stable in The Rosebud (Listed, 1100m) at Rosehill on Saturday, so Waller has opted to run Confederation in the Vain Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) at Caulfield. The three-year-old colt had a jump-out at Flemington last Friday, finishing at the tail of a five-horse field, but had shown previous promise when a debut second in the Canonbury Stakes (Gr 3, 1100m) at Rosehill in January. "He doesn't like the Rosehill 1100 [metres]," Waller said. "He had a couple of runs out of the shute and he used to get a bit aggressive and run out to the left, and it cost him a couple of times. We go by feel. He looks like he's come back well, and Damian Lane rode him on Friday, and he was pretty happy with him."

Black type the plan for Lady Catalina

The Ciaron Maher-trained Lady Catalina (Written Tycoon) will bid to add more black type to her CV when she heads to Caulfield for the Quezette Stakes. Already stakes placed in Scone's Woodlands Stakes (Listed, 1100m), the first foal out of Away Game (Snitzel) went for $1.8 million as a yearling and looks to enhance her value further on Saturday. "She's a winner and is Stakes placed and had a gallop at Ballarat on Tuesday, and she seems to be in very good form," Maher's assistant Jack Turnbull said. "It's usually a good form line type of race [the Quezette]. It could be a Coolmore preparation for some, or they could go down the filly's path."

Romeo to get another trip chance

Romeo's Choice (Choistar) will head to Rosehill on Saturday but will not run over his usual 1200-metre distance, with trainer Richard Litt opting instead to send the gelding to the Racing And Sports Handicap (1400m) in a final crack at deciding whether he can stay the trip. The seven-year-old gelding won a Benchmark 88 contest over 1300 metres two starts ago before a last-start fifth up to Benchmark 94 grade over the same distance, and Litt is hoping Romeo's Choice can have better luck at 1400 metres this time around – having placed twice at the trip before. "We haven't had a lot of luck at the 1400 [metres], but we want to give it a go," Litt said. "He's going wonderful, and he's a lovely horse. It is tempting, and it opens up a lot more races going forward next 'prep' if we know he can run a strong 14."

Bain confident with ex-Waller gelding

Officiate (Credit: Racing Photos)

Angaston-based trainer Aaron Bain is hopeful that Officiate (Justify) can recoup some of the $60,000 outlayed to secure him when he takes on Saturday's Hahn Handicap (1569m) at Morphettville. The former Chris Waller-trained four-year-old was purchased by Bain via the 2026 Inglis May (Early) Online Sale and will be looking for his first success since moving south. A son of Justify (Scat Daddy), he has earned just over $16,000 for minor placings at his first two runs for Bain and training partner Ned Taylor. "We probably didn't think we'd be able to get him for that, to be fair," he said. "I knew a few people from Chris's and reached out and they said he was sound, happy and healthy and he's been all of that. The way he's performed in a lot of those class races was going to be good enough to measure up in Adelaide for a couple of seasons and target some better races. There was a lot of upside from our perspective."

Half Yours goes well at jumpouts

Last year's Caulfield Cup (Gr 1, 2400m) and Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) hero Half Yours (St Jean) pleased his trainers Tony and Calvin McEvoy with his workout at Flemington on Friday morning as the six-year-old gelding continues his preparations for a spring comeback. Eased back initially under Harry Coffey, Half Yours hit the line well in a bunched finish to the hit-out. “He was really good,” Calvin McEvoy told Racing.com. “He cruised around, 1000m, under very little pressure and I thought he trialled super. He hasn’t had a long time off from his Queensland campaign, so he’s got good base fitness. We haven’t done a lot of work with him going into today and for that reason, we gave him a nice, soft trial but he was fantastic late and did everything we wanted to see.”

New Zealand

Taupo test awaits promising filly

Taranaki filly Shamelia Kirk (Shamexpress) showed plenty as juvenile and trainer Robbie Patterson is hopeful she can bring that form into her three-year-old season, with her first test being the Chittick Family Fillies' Classic (Listed, 1100m) at Taupo on Sunday. The daughter of Shamexpress (O’Reilly) had three starts last season for a win and two seconds, including a runner-up performance behind Actionbelle (Bivouac) in the Castletown Stakes (Listed, 1200m) at Otaki. Patterson was pleased with her effort on the testing Heavy 10 track and said she has thrived after being freshened, with her barrier being his only concern heading into Sunday. “She is very well, she has done super since the Castletown,” Patterson said. “She had a little break after that and has come back and is looking great. Just the sticky draw [12] is the only problem on Sunday, and a good field.” Further stakes targets await Shamelia Kirk, with the ultimate aim being the New Zealand 1,000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) at Riccarton in November if she indicates she can handle a mile.

Nicconi County shooting for four straight

Nicconi County (Nicconi) has been in a purple patch of form over winter and will bid to extend his winning streak to four when he heads to Ruakaka on Saturday. The Bob and Jenny Vance-trained eight-year-old kicked off his winning run at Ellerslie in June before posting back-to-back victories at Ruakaka, all over 1200 metres. Bob Vance said his charge has appreciated the forgiving footing at the Northland venue, which has been reflected in his recent performances. “He has done everything right and we are quite happy with him,” he said. “He really needs the sting out of the track. Over the summer he was just jarring up a bit on the firm tracks. We gave him a break and the give in the track up there is perfect for him.” The son of Nicconi (Bianconi) is a dual acceptor for the Gallagher Insurance Bream Sprint (1100m) and Shane Batten Electrical Bream Bay Cup (1400m), and Vance is leaning towards the latter, where he will carry 4.5 kilograms less and jump from an inside alley.

Ronaldo set on 2000 Guineas path

Trainer Robbie Patterson has the New Zealand 2,000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) firmly in mind for promising three-year-old Ronaldo (Ribchester), a winner of two from three starts. “Ronaldo is coming up super, he looks amazing,” Patterson said. “He is a big, strong colt now and he is definitely heading to Christchurch for the 2000 Guineas.” Out of seven-time winner Miss Daisy (Any Suggestion), Ronaldo is expected to have two starts leading into the Riccarton feature in November.

Regional Stablehand of the Year winners announced

The regional winners of the 2025–26 New Zealand Stablehand of the Year Award have been announced, with Pratap Singh (Wexford), Casey Gilbert (Oulaghan) and Zac Harkess (Prendergast) progressing to the national final. Sponsored by Saddlery Warehouse Cambridge & Tauranga, the awards recognise the skill, commitment and behind-the-scenes contribution stablehands make to New Zealand’s thoroughbred racing industry. The trio will now contest the overall New Zealand Stablehand of the Year title, which will be announced at the 2025–26 New Zealand Thoroughbred Horse of the Year Awards to be held at the New Zealand International Convention Centre in Auckland on September 6.

UK: Vandeek and Gstaad relatives set for Tattersalls

Maywood Stud will offer three close relations to Group 1-winning half-brothers Gstaad (Starspangledbanner) and Arrowfield shuttler Vandeek (Havana Grey) at Tattersalls later this year. The latest addition is a Wootton Bassett (Iffraaj) half-sister to the pair, who will be offered at the Tattersalls December Foal Sale. She will be joined in the December catalogue by a Havana Grey (Havana Gold) colt out of Lady Kheleyf (Kheleyf), a half-sister to Gstaad and Vandeek. The colt is therefore closely related to dual Group 1-winning juvenile and Arrowfield and Cheveley Park Stud stallion Vandeek, who is also by Havana Grey. Maywood Stud will first offer a Starspangledbanner (Choisir) yearling out of Lady Kheleyf as Lot 74 during Book 1 of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale.

US: Grade 1 winner Seismic Beauty retired

Grade 1-winning mare Seismic Beauty (Uncle Mo) has been retired from racing and will join the broodmare band of owners Randy and Jenny Boyd’s Boyd Racing. The five-year-old established herself among the leading US distaff performers last season, winning the Santa Margarita Stakes (Gr 2, 9f) at Santa Anita before claiming the Clement L. Hirsch Stakes (Gr 1, 8.5f) at Del Mar. She subsequently finished unplaced as favourite in the Breeders’ Cup Distaff (Gr 1, 9f) before being purchased by Boyd Racing for US$2.5 million from the Gainesway draft at the 2025 Fasig-Tipton November Sale. Seismic Beauty retires with four wins and four placings from ten starts and earnings of US$501,340. Bred by Determined Stud, she was sold for US$400,000 as a weanling before MyRacehorse and Peter Leidel purchased her for US$550,000 at the 2022 Keeneland September Yearling Sale.

US: Goffs strengthens US presence with Dubois appointment

Goffs has strengthened its presence in the United States with the appointment of French-born Louis Dubois as US agent. Dubois will work alongside existing US representative Jacob West, while Tom Taaffe will continue to focus on the American market through his international client relations role. The appointment is aimed at increasing US participation across Goffs sales in Ireland, particularly the Orby Sale and the newly launched Chicquita Session at the November Breeding Stock Sale. Dubois brings considerable international experience to the role, having worked in the breeze-up sector in New Zealand before joining Kirkwood Stables in the US. He subsequently spent several seasons with Godolphin in Australia and Dubai, while remaining active in the American sales market, before joining trainer Wesley Ward. American participation at Goffs has been growing, with spend by US buyers at last year’s Orby Sale increasing by 46.3 per cent.

KSA: Saudi Derby upgraded as Riyadh season dates announced

The Saudi Derby has been upgraded from Group 3 to Group 2 status by the Asian Pattern Committee ahead of the 2026–27 Riyadh Racing Season. The race will be staged on Saudi Cup Day on February 6, forming part of the two-day Saudi Cup meeting on February 5 and 6. The Jockey Club of Saudi Arabia has also confirmed the wider Riyadh season will begin on October 16 featuring 50 race days across six months, with racing conducted on Fridays and Saturdays. 21 feature race days will be staged, including The King Abdulaziz Cup on March 12. Two new series for locally bred horses have also been introduced. The Riyadh Crown Series will be staged across December 4, January 22 and March 12, while the Riyadh Sword Series for locally bred fillies will take place on December 5, January 8 and February 6. The final leg of the latter will also be open to imported fillies. HRH Prince Bandar bin Khalid Al Faisal said: “This support has contributed to consolidating The Kingdom's position on the global horseracing map and the Riyadh Season 2026/2027 comes as an extension of this journey, with a program that carries measurable initiatives that reflect our ambition to provide a stronger and more competitive season, and to continue to raise the level of racing in line with the position that The Kingdom has reached globally.”

Ka Ying Rising and Ombudsman retain world rankings lead

Ka Ying Rising (Credit: HKJC)

Ka Ying Rising (Shamexpress) and Ombudsman (Night Of Thunder) remain joint leaders of the sixth edition of the 2026 Longines World’s Best Racehorse Rankings with ratings of 131. Hong Kong star Ka Ying Rising has resumed training following a scheduled break, while Ombudsman is being prepared for the International Stakes (Gr 1, 1m 2.5f) at York. Recently retired Bow Echo (Night Of Thunder) improved from 126 to 127 following his victory in the Sussex Stakes (Gr 1, 1m) and now sits alone in third. Goodwood Cup (Gr 1, 2m) winner Scandinavia (Justify) improved from 123 to 125 following his eight-and-a-half-length victory, while US Horse of the Year Sovereignty (Into Mischief) also rose to 125 after winning the Whitney Stakes (Gr 1, 9f) by four and three-quarter lengths.
