O’Neill fillies are firing

After another profitable weekend extended Prime Thoroughbreds’ flying start to the season, the successful syndicator’s founder Joe O’Neill is hopeful that hot streak can continue when Cavalry Girl (Bivouac) lines up in Saturday’s Carlyon Stakes (Gr 3, 1000m) as the prelude to a potential tilt at the Moir Stakes (Gr 1, 1000m).

The diversity of O’Neill’s operation was ably demonstrated in the space of 24 hours, as lightly-raced mare Shadhavar (Pride Of Dubai) sealed back-to-back stakes wins in the Regal Roller Stakes (Listed, 1200m) at Caulfield on Saturday before evergreen eight-year-old The Cunning Fox (Reliable Man) carried the Prime colours to a valiant victory in the JJ Houlahan Hurdle (3250m) at Ballarat on Sunday.

That latter triumph, achieved with a late turn of foot which even Shadhavar would have been proud of, took Prime Thoroughbreds’ overall tally of wins to 1,150 since O’Neill initially joined forces with former trainer Bill Mitchell to start syndicating horses in the late 1990s.

What's On

Throw in a minor placing in Saturday’s Quezette Stakes (Gr 3, 1100m) for filly Oh Yes She Did (Yes Yes Yes), whose half-sister Rubikai (Rubick) is a member of O’Neill’s select broodmare band, and it is easy to see why the 70-year-old is looking to the future with a fair degree of optimism.

On the immediate horizon is Cavalry Girl’s upcoming reconnaissance mission to Sandown, which in Moonee Valley’s absence also plays host to the Moir Stakes this year.

With three wins and a pair of placings from her five starts this prep for trainer Tom Dabernig, including a maiden black-type triumph by 4.5 lengths which will ensure a bumper payday for her owners when she is eventually auctioned as a broodmare prospect, Cavalry Girl’s scintillating form has seen her installed by bookmakers as a $10 chance for the sprint feature.

The daughter of Darley’s Bivouac (Exceed And Excel) was acquired for $110,000 at the 2024 Inglis Classic Yearling Sale by O’Neill, who primarily targets reasonably-priced fillies and seemingly has an uncanny knack of knowing which first-season sires to hitch his wagon to.

From the same extended family as Newgate’s stallion-in-waiting Campione D’Italia (Snitzel) as well as the Group 3 victor Espionage (Zoustar), who is standing his first season at Lovatsville, Cavalry Girl is already worth a pretty penny; but if she could add a topline triumph to an already glowing CV, the four-year-old would likely command more as a broodmare than the $1.4 million Prime’s former flagbearer Rubisaki (Rubick) realised in 2024.

That, of course, is purely hypothetical but what is certain is that, with her natural early speed and ability to handle on-pace pressure, Cavalry Girl appears tailor-made for a race like the Moir Stakes – provided she shows a liking for Sandown on her first visit to the venue.

“We’ll know more after Saturday but if she could win the Carlyon Stakes, then we’d obviously have to seriously consider having a crack at the Moir,” O’Neill told ANZ News.

“She’s only just turned four and it can be a difficult adjustment for fillies coming out of their three-year-old season, so to do what she did last time was very impressive because she absolutely brained a pretty handy field [by 3.75 lengths].

“She’s in great form and she’s still only lightly-raced, but we won’t push her if we don’t think she’s ready for it. Tom’s very patient with his horses, so we’ll take it slowly with her but she’s already won a stakes race and the way she won that day at Caulfield, I don’t see any reason why she can’t take the next step.”

As for Shadhavar, who was purchased for $25,000 less than her stablemate Cavalry Girl, O’Neill is hopeful that – like two other celebrated daughters of Pride Of Dubai (Street Cry) in Bella Nipotina and Pride Of Jenni – the lightly-raced mare can continue to improve with age.

With just 15 starts on her racing resumé, Shadhavar has been conservatively managed by Dabernig who also prepares another potentially precocious product in Hellfire Jess (Hellbent), Prime’s leading Thousand Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) hope whose dam Flying Jess (Hinchinbrook) won the 2017 Magic Millions 3YO Guineas (RL, 1400m) for O’Neill.

Shadhavar will go in search of her fourth win in succession in the Courtza Stakes (G3, 1200m) – formerly known as the Cockram Stakes – at Caulfield in a fortnight’s time, with a myriad of options available to connections thereafter.

“She’s so big and strong that if you didn’t know any better, you’d think she was a colt,” O’Neill told ANZ News.

“She’s very typical of the breed, we’ve seen that Pride of Dubai mares just seem to get better with age so that’s very exciting because she’s already a highly-quality race mare. The Memsie looks a very strong edition so we’ll look at a slightly weaker race that day, and it would be lovely if she could add another stakes win to her page because she’s very well bred – her third dam Helen Street is the mother of Street Cry.

“She was a beautiful type when we bought her at the sales as a filly, and we managed to pick her up for a pretty decent price. I work closely with Bill [Mitchell] and if we both find a horse that we like, we’ll then look at how deep its pedigree is to work out what we think it’s worth and how much we’re willing to spend. Cavalry Girl cost us $110,000 and I don’t usually go any higher than $150,000 at the sales, unless I really like one.

Joe O’Neill

“We stick to our processes, and we’ve got a pretty good track record with our purchases – of the 360-odd horses we’ve syndicated, I think only around 12 or 13 haven’t made it to the races. We’re very meticulous and our clients trust us, but we still have to make it affordable for them and if the fillies can perform well on the racetrack, the owners will make a bit of money when they’re sold as broodmares.”

O’Neill will again be shopping extensively at the yearling sales next season, and he has identified Twin Hills Stud’s Daumier as a stallion who might emerge as a force to be reckoned with in 2027 and beyond.

On his recent visit to Darley Stud, O’Neill was particularly taken with the poise and presence of Tentyris (Street Boss), but he believes that another former Godolphin galloper offers excellent value for money at a current service fee of just $16,500.

“I bought the best two Daumier yearlings at the Magic Millions in January,” he told ANZ News.

“We bought a filly out of Dominant Lady for $85,000 and another filly out of Arizona Night for $40,000, they were both from the Twin Hills draft and both have broken in beautifully. I really rate him as an up-and-coming stallion, and I also think Brave Smash will have a good season with his first crop out of the Yarraman mares. I would expect him to be kicking goals and I also think Tiger Of Malay is going to start making his mark, especially if he can get some better mares.

“Tentyris is also a really beautiful horse, I saw him last week and I was so impressed. He’ll get every opportunity to make it with the nice mares that Darley will be sending him, but I suspect his yearlings might be out of our price range so we may have to shop around the edges a bit more. I’d love to buy more of the Bivouacs next year if we can afford them, we’ve got three by him and I really like them.”

Morning Briefing

Australia

Mares set to dominate Winx Stakes

Mares are set to play a major role in Saturday’s Winx Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) at Randwick, a race won by a mare in five of the past eight seasons, multiple times with Winx (Street Cry) and Via Sistina (Fastnet Rock). Chris Waller’s unbeaten star Autumn Glow (The Autumn Sun) is set to resume in the $1 million feature, where she could clash with Peter Moody and Katherine Coleman’s Golden Eagle favourite Sheza Alibi (Saxon Warrior). Waller, a nine-time winner of the race, has also nominated Group 1 mares Aeliana (Castelvecchio), Fangirl (Sebring) and Lady Shenandoah (Snitzel), alongside the males Beiwacht (Bivouac), Lindermann (Lonhro), Autumn Boy (The Autumn Sun) and Angel Capital (Harry Angel). Several members of the Waller team also hold the option of heading to Caulfield for the Memsie Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) a week later.

Unit Five begins Coolmore path at Sandown

Magic Millions 2YO Classic (RL, 1200m) winner Unit Five (Supido) will begin his spring campaign at Sandown on Saturday as the Ciaron Maher trained colt builds towards the Coolmore Stud Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m). The three-year-old has not raced since finishing tenth in the Blue Diamond Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) in February, with three months away from the stable helping him strengthen ahead of his spring preparation. Unit Five has pleased in two Cranbourne trials and is nominated for Saturday’s three-year-old handicap over 1000 metres. He is then expected to head to Flemington for the Poseidon Stakes (Gr 3, 1100m) on September 12, giving him experience down the straight ahead of a potential Coolmore Stud Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) appearance. Unit Five won on debut at Caulfield Heath in December before securing the Magic Millions 2YO Classic and has already earned just shy of $1.9 million. He was purchased by Ciaron Maher for $80,000 from the draft of Widden at the 2025 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale.

Pembrey returns in Silver Shadow

Pembrey (Credit: Sportpix)

Magic Night Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) winner Pembrey (Prague) will begin her spring campaign in Saturday’s Silver Shadow Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) at Randwick, with James McDonald reunited with the Tony Gollan trained filly. McDonald partnered Pembrey to her Magic Night victory at Rosehill in February before Tim Clark took the ride in the Golden Slipper Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m), where she endured a difficult run after drawing the outside barrier. Gollan gave the three-year-old an extended break following the Slipper and believes she has returned a stronger filly. Pembrey has pleased in a jump out and trial ahead of her return and has been based at Randwick for the past week. The filly had impressed Gollan prior to winning on debut at Eagle Farm and confirmed that promise when stepping into stakes company to win the Magic Night at her second preparation.

September Born returns with Belmont trial win

September Born (Playing God) took an encouraging step towards his racetrack return with victory in a 1000-metre trial at Belmont on Monday morning. The five-year-old entire emerged as a promising three-year-old when winning the Fairetha Stakes (Listed, 1400m) before starting favourite in the WA Guineas (Gr 2, 1600m). He returned lame from the Guineas and subsequently struggled to recapture form, before being placed under a bleeding embargo in April. Those embargoes were lifted on Monday, with Parnham reporting that hoof issues identified with September Born are now under control. September Born narrowly defeated Yougivemechills (Frosted) in his trial heat as he builds towards a return to racing. Bred on the successful Playing God–Blackfriars cross, September Born is out of Flirt ’N’ Hope (McFlirt), making him a full-brother to Kingston Town Classic (Gr 1, 1800m) winner Kay Cee.

Ryan appointed head trainer at Macedon Lodge

Sara Ryan will expand her operation into Victoria after being appointed head trainer at the historic Macedon Lodge training facility at Mount Macedon from September 1. The 31-year-old will retain her existing Wyong stable in New South Wales while establishing a second base at Macedon Lodge, with Stephen Farley continuing to play an important role in the Wyong operation. Ryan rose to prominence with Attractable (I Am Invincible) winning the $3 million Big Dance in 2023 before Matcha Latte (Maurice) landed the $1 million Provincial-Midway Championships in 2025. Ryan had also broken in and educated both horses before they joined her stable. Macedon Lodge has a rich history in Australian racing, having produced six Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) winners since the property was developed in 2000. Existing Macedon Racing trainers John Symons and Sheila Laxon will continue to train a small team from Macedon Lodge.

New Zealand

Well Written impresses in Taupo trial

Yulong’s Group 1-winning mare Well Written (Written Tycoon) continued her build-up towards the Proisir Plate (Gr 1, 1400m) with an impressive 1100-metre trial victory at Taupo. The Stephen Marsh-trained four-year-old was having her second trial and scored by two lengths from Twain (Per Incanto) and Wolfgang (Puccini). Marsh has pencilled in the Proisir Plate (Gr 1, 1400m) at Ellerslie on September 5 for Well Written’s return.

Hello Youmzain mare ready to return

Promising four-year-old mare Drops Of God (Hello Youmzain) produced an emphatic performance to claim the other black type trial at Taupo. A last-start winner of the Cambridge Breeders’ Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) at Te Rapa in April, Drops Of God has built an imposing record of three wins from four starts. Her sole defeat came behind stablemate Belle Cheval (Savabeel), who subsequently franked the form with victory in the Vinery Stud Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m) in Sydney after narrowly defeating Well Written (Written Tycoon) in the NZB Kiwi (1500m).

Phillyjean on path towards 1000 Guineas

Phillyjean (Credit: Loveracing.NZ)

Promising filly Phillyjean (Hello Youmzain) could be set for an exciting spring after finishing runner-up to Hawea (Hellbent) in Sunday’s Chittick Family Fillies’ Classic (Listed, 1100m) at Taupo. The Samantha Logan-trained three-year-old has now finished second in each of her three career starts, with Sunday’s performance securing valuable black type. The Gold Trail Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) is likely among her next targets with The New Zealand 1000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) at Riccarton in November on the radar. Bred and raced by John Newman, Phillyjean is out of stakes placed Mastercraftsman (Danehill Dancer) mare Dreamcatcher and joined Logans stable after Carlaw Park’s Nick Fairweather and Nicole Brown recommended the Cambridge trainer for her early education.

Diktaean seeks back-to-back Korea Cup wins

Japanese dirt star Diktaean (King Kamehameha) will bid to defend his Korea Cup (Gr 3, 1800m) title after accepting an invitation for the feature at Seoul on September 6. The eight-year-old gelding, followed last year’s Korea Cup success with victory in the Tokyo Daishoten (Gr 1, 2000m) at Oi in December. He was subsequently crowned the NAR Horse of the Year for 2025. Bred by Oiwake Farm, Diktaean is raced by G1 Racing. Japan will also be represented in the Korea Sprint (Gr 2, 1200m) by U.S bred Dragon Welds (Frosted), who is unbeaten in three starts this year for trainer Hideaki Fujiwara, including victory in the Tokyo Sprint (Listed, 1200m) at Oi in April. The four-year-old was purchased by T B Bloodstock for US$150,000 at the OBS Spring Two-Year-Olds in Training Sale. The Korea Cup carries prize-money of KRW1.6 billion (A$1.5m), while the Korea Sprint is worth KRW1.4 billion (A$1.4m).

Rayif doubles Group 1 tally in Jacques le Marois

Rayif (Sea The Moon) returned to his best to land Sunday’s Prix Jacques le Marois (Gr 1, 1600m) at Deauville, adding a second top-level success to his victory in the Poule d’Essai des Poulains (Gr 1, 1600m). The Francis Graffard-trained three-year-old had finished fifth in last month’s Prix Jean Prat (Gr 1, 1400m), his only unplaced result, but bounced back emphatically to defeat Zeus Olympios (Night Of Thunder) with Irish 1000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1m) and Coronation Stakes (Gr 1, 1m) winner Precise (Starspangledbanner) finished another half-length away in third. Rayif is one of six Group 1 winners by Sea The Moon (Sea The Stars) and is out of dual stakes-placed Rayisa (Holy Roman Emperor). He is a half-brother to Group 3 winner Rayevka (Blue Point), who was runner-up in the King Charles III Stakes (Gr 1, 5f) and third in the Commonwealth Cup (Gr 1, 6f).

Five million-euro yearlings drive Arqana Day 2

Strong trade continued on the second evening of the Arqana August Yearling Sale, with turnover rising 34 per cent year-on-year to €20.467 million. The average climbed 30 per cent to €319,797, with a 86% clearance. Five yearlings sold for €1 million or more, with Godolphin securing four of them through Anthony Stroud. The session-topper, a Wootton Bassett (Iffraaj) colt offered by Haras de l’Hotellerie, sold to Godolphin for €2.4 million (A$3.9m) following a prolonged bidding battle with Coolmore. He is a brother to multiple Group winner Topgear. Godolphin also paid €2.3 million (A$3.75m) for a Frankel (Galileo) colt out of Group winner Rumbles Of Thunder (Night Of Thunder), offered by Baroda Stud. Écurie des Monceaux was another vendor to sell to Godolphin with a Frankel filly out of Group winner and Prix de Diane (Gr 1, 2100m) runner-up Philomene (Dubawi) for €1.7 million (A$2.7m). The filly descends from leading producer Prudenzia (Dansili), dam of Chicquita (Montjeu) Diamond Necklace (St Marks Basilica) and VRC McKinnon S. (Gr 1, 2000m) winner Magic Wand (Galileo). Stroud also went to €1.6 million (A$2.6m) for a Wootton Bassett colt out of Group winner Paix (Muhaarar). The fifth million euro lot was a Siyouni (Pivotal) colt out of Prudenzia, making him a half-brother to Chicquita, Diamond Necklace and Magic Wand. Japanese trainer Yoshito Yahagi secured the colt for €1 million on behalf of Susumu Fujita.

Chaldean filly sells for €650,000 at Arqana

Cambridge Stud shuttler Chaldean (Frankel) recorded a strong result from his first crop of yearlings when Amanda Skiffington paid €650,000 (A$1.05m) for a well-related filly offered by Haras de Saint Pair at the Arqana August Sale. The filly is out of Listed winner Pearly Steph (Oasis Dream), whose three winners include Eternal Pearl (Frankel), winner of the Princess Royal Stakes (Gr 3, 2400m) and Prix Minerve (Gr 3, 2500m) for Godolphin. “I loved Chaldean’s foals last year," Skiffington said, "they were beautiful, and she’s lovely too.” The filly was purchased for Fiona Carmichael, with her future trainer yet to be decided.

Fasig NY Bred Sale on par Day 1

A total of 63 yearlings sold at the Fasig-Tipton New York Bred Yearlings Sale for US$7.622 million at an average of US$120,984 and median of US$100,000, with the clearance rate just under 80 per cent. “Excellent opening session of the 2026 New York Bred Sale,” Fasig-Tipton President Boyd Browning said. “Statistically, right on par with the overall sale last year, which is a record-breaking sale." A colt from the first crop of Horse of the Year Cody’s Wish (Curlin) topped the opening session at US$360,000, as more than half of the yearlings sold realised six figures. Offered by Sequel on behalf of Chester Broman, the colt is out of stakes-winning More Than Ready (Southern Halo) mare Hard To Stay Notgo, whose five winners from five runners include stakes winners Makin My Move (Carpe Diem) and Mommy’s Turn (Mendelssohn). Six yearlings sold for US$300,000 or more during Sunday’s session. The second-highest price came for the final lot through the ring, a colt from the first crop of champion Forte (Violence), who sold to trainer Saffie Joseph Jr for US$350,000. The Fasig-Tipton New York Bred Yearlings Sale concludes with its second session on Monday.

OTT goes clear at FEI World Championship

Australia’s Sophia Hill and her thoroughbred, Humble Glory (Bernardini), were the first to beat the clock and went double clear at the FEI Eventing World Championship at Aachen, Germany. Both rider and horse were on debut at the Championships and jumped clear to finish 14th in the world, finishing on their dressage score of 37.6. “Huey (Humble Glory) was incredible out there. It was a really intense course and it felt like it was coming up super quickly,” reflected Hill. “I was just telling myself to really take my time at the combinations and ride everything properly, and obviously go fast on the straight bits in between where I could.” Humble Glory carries the familiar MVL on his shoulder and raced as Camon Houdini for Gai Waterhouse.

A Hint of spring

She's No Saint (Credit: Loveracing.NZ)

Lloyd Jackson

While most of the country is ensconced by the gloom of winter, a hint of spring broke through at Ruakaka last Saturday in a region sometimes known as the Winterless North.

The seaside track is the country’s best natural winter surface (as distinct from Ellerslie’s StrathAyr surface) and Saturday presented a Soft 6 rating, ideal for providing a window into early Spring form. Both 1200m events were run in less than 1:12. Refreshingly, the feature was run in bright sunshine.

Although the premier Group 1 Guineas races are a little less than three months away, a number of three-year-olds are gearing up, initiated by the Northland Breeders’ Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) which drew several promising contenders.

Punters needed only to look back two weeks to Ruakaka’s August 1st meeting, held on an identical Soft 6 track, to find the quinella. That day, She’s No Saint (Prague) took out the Breeders’ Stakes Prelude (1100m) by three lengths while Shalabiya (Brazen Beau) won on debut over 1200m by a widening five lengths, both fillies franking that form in the Group 3 event.

She’s No Saint brought back-to-back wins to the party and left with a hattrick, having scored at Ellerslie as a late two-year-old prior to her August 1st Ruakaka success. Those were starts five and six. In January the filly was a sound sixth in the Karaka Millions 2YO (Listed, 1200m).

The Prague (Redoute’s Choice) filly is proving somewhat versatile. She led all the way at Ellerslie but finished strongly from third last in her August 1st win. Saturday, she was pressured in the lead until the top of the straight but, comfortable on her home track, she bounded away from the 200m to launch her black-type career, taking her bank to $132,475.

Longer term, the goal is likely the New Zealand One Thousand Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m). “From 1200m to a mile is a big step up,” said trainer Michelle Bradley. “To get today ticked off the bucket list is fantastic. We will see how she comes through it and on to the next race, which will be over 1400m, and we will go from there. One thing I would take out of today is that I would like her to settle a little bit,” said.Bradley.

As a weanling, She’s No Saint fetched $65,000 at the 2024 Wm Inglis Australian Weanling Sale, purchased with a view to pinhooking by Highline Thoroughbreds’ Cam and Eva Heron in conjunction with highly respected agent Paul Moroney. However, at Karaka the filly sold for $55,000.

Her dam Poetic Diva (Poet’s Voice) has been shuffled around from owner to owner. In 11 years she has been offered for sale seven times, first as a yearling at the Magic Million Gold Coast Yearling Sale, realising $80,000. In April this year, weeks before She’s No Saint broke her maiden, Poetic Diva fetched just $600 via Wm Inglis’s April On Line Sale.

From four foals to race She’s No Saint is her sole winner and the sole stakes winner within her first two generations. Poetic Diva’s grandam is Anne Of Saxony (Ela-Mana-Mou), a Group 3 winner at Doncaster whose half sister Accessories (Singspiel) foaled three Australian Group 1 winners: Pericles (Street Boss), sires Helmet (Exceed And Excel) and Epaulette (Commands) plus Mr Brightside’s sire Bullbars (Elusive Quality).

A few firsts

Favourite for the Group 3, second placed Shalabiya (Brazen Beau), took an ambitious step from maiden class to Group 3 level yet handled the jump quite well. While no match for the more experienced winner, Shalabiya did not lose any admirers, finishing doggedly out of the pack to claim her first black-type. A half-sister to dual Group 1 winner Crocetti (Zacinto), himself a winner of this race in 2023, did enough to suggest that she is the real deal, enhancing her value in the process.

At just her third start and fresh up was third placed Silhouette who provided the first black-type for her sire, Mapperley Stud’s Armory (Galileo). The same filly provided Armory his first winner. Silhouette, one of a handful of Armory’s runners, was seen putting in some big strides late and it will be interesting to follow her when the three-year-olds are stretched to 1600m and beyond.

On the Ruakaka undercard Sneaking To Win (Snitzel), domiciled in the Hawke’s Bay region, sired his first winner, Sneaky Cyclone, who landed the Tree Wise Northland Maiden (1600m). The four-year-old gelding had battled away in 13 previous starts which included three placings before his breakthrough. In a tough effort, he took over the lead three deep at the 600m and led the entire straight to score by a length and three-quarters.

Sneaking To Win stands at Te Aute Stud near Hastings. He placed once in three starts, is a son of Champion Sire Snitzel (Redoute’s Choice) and ranks as a half-brother to the outstanding four times Group 1 mare Appearance (Commands).

Moore success

A more typical chilly winter day at Taupo, for the weekend’s second stakes for three-year-olds, was brightened considerably with the addition of Hawea (Hellbent) to the ranks. Starting as a maiden against opponents with some very worthwhile exposed form, the Graham Richardson/Rogan Norvall trained filly made an emphatic statement when taking out the inaugural Chittick Family Fillies Classic (Listed, 1100m).

A clear last at the 600m and last when they made the last corner, Hawea was pulled to the outside by rider Wiremu Pinn. Once balanced she gathered in most of the field but at the 100m she was low flying. Going two-to-one she raced away to a most impressive maiden win and maiden stakes win at just her fourth start. From last to first, her opponents had no excuses. This was special.

“I didn’t expect her to quicken like she did. It did surprise me,” said Pinn, adding: “I thought it was a very dominant win.” Co-trainer Graham Richardson commented: “She came from last and has beaten a good field. She is a very good filly that has had a few problems,” Richardson referring to the filly’s now resolved barrier issues.

Her three starts at two culminated with a distant third behind Lara Antipova (Russian Revolution) in February’s Matamata Breeders’ Stakes (Gr 2, 1200) before being put aside. Fourth in an August 4th Te Rapa trial was her only outing leading to Taupo.

Soliloquy Lodge has developed a wonderful family descending from Blue Hen Soliloquy (Sobig)

Richard Moore of Soliloquy Lodge has developed a wonderful family descending from Blue Hen Soliloquy (Sobig), two of which, Natural Fling (Home Affairs) and Hawea, are individual stakes winners 41 and 42 directly connected to Soliloquy. Saturday’s dominant Quezette Stakes (Gr 3, 1100m) winner Natural Fling is a great granddaughter of Cross Words (Grosvenor). Hawea is a great-granddaughter of Momentie (Grosvenor).

Cross Words and Momentie are three-quarter sisters, the former from Listed winner Quibble (Ruling) while the latter is from the top class triple Group 1 filly/mare Solveig (Imposing). The next dam is the great Soliloquy. Hardly a year goes by without a new stakes winner from this outstanding line. Including Group 1 winner Soliloquy herself there have been 10 further individual Group 1 winners trace directly to her.

Hawea, a $300,000 graduate of NZB’s 2025 Karaka Yearling Sale (Book 1), is the fourth winner from four to race from Idlewild (Lonhro). The latter’s three quarter sister is Sydney Listed winner Adroitly (Octagonal). A half-sister is Group 2 Sandown Guineas (1600m) victor Caymans (Secret Savings).

Natural Fling, a $550,000 purchase out of the 2025 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale, is the second of two winners from The Natural (Fastnet Rock), a sister to the dam of 2024 Spring Champion Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m) winner El Castillo (Castelvecchio). The Natural’s half-brother is dual Group 1 winner Fiveanahalfstar (Hotel Grand) while her dam Cryptic Miss (Snippets) was an only foal.

Across the pond

In separate cities, three Kiwi-breds saluted, at Rosehill in Sydney, Caulfield in Melbourne and Belmont Park in Perth. Rosehill’s opener went to Attractiveness (Hello Youmzain) who took her growing record to four wins in nine starts. Unlike her prior win, Saturday’s was hard fought, taking the lead at the top of the straight and refusing to buckle under intense pressure. The $120,000 2024 NZB Karaka Yearling Sale (Book 1) purchase is now a back-to-back Rosehill winner and has banked $193.950. Her August 1st win was covered in detail in Kiwi Chronicles’ August 4th issue.

At Caulfield Taka Speed (Savabeel) did best in a good finish to the Benchmark 78 Remembering Diatribe Handicap (2000m). He sat midfield past the 600m and rounding five deep into the 300m straight was ready to pounce. With two to beat at the 200m he grabbed a narrow lead at the 100m then held on well for win five in 15 career starts, banking $200,225.

Unraced at two but a winner on debut at three, Taka Speed landed a hattrick of wins last December and January including at Sandown. Since then his form has been fair if patchy. Now five, he certainly ran out the 2000m now that he has matured.

Taka Speed was catalogued but withdrawn from NZB’s 2023 Karaka Yearling Sale, instead showing up at the 2023 NZB Ready To Run Sale, where he made $300,000 from Gordon Cunningham’s Curraghmore Stud draft. Taka Speed is one of two winners from Group 3 placed Melbourne winner Toffee Nose (Toorak Toff), The other is also by Savabeel, namely Morphettville winner Savatoff.

He descends from a famous Australian family as his great grandam is a half-sister to $3.2 million earner and four times Group 1 winner Tuesday Joy (Carnegie) as well as Australian Oaks (Gr 1, 2400m) winner Sunday Joy (Sunday Silence). The latter foaled perhaps the best in the family, More Joyous (More Than Ready), an eight-times Group 1 winner.

Over in Perth Starwalker (Sweynesse) took out win four and his earnings beyond $128,000 after a patient ride from Chanel Cooper who, from worse than midfield on the fence, waited for the false rail before diving through from the top of the straight. Once in front, the 6YO then showed great courage to hold out two stiff challengers. Starwalker is the fifth winner and second city winner from Wonderful Mak (No Excuse Needed) who was named Stars Colliding in New Zealand. Skydance (Makfi) also won in Perth, at Ascot.
