Mighty mares set to clash

Anytime is a good time for such things, but at a moment when racing could really use some horses to dominate the headlines, Saturday’s Winx Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) at Randwick looks set to provide a doozy.

As concerned parties continue waiting to see if former Minister Brad Hazzard’s review of NSW’s Thoroughbred Racing Act will be made public, by Tuesday it still hadn’t and there was no sign of smoke in the chimney, mouths began watering over a likely clash of wonder mares Autumn Glow (The Autumn Sun) and Sheza Alibi (Saxon Warrior).

What's On

Chris Waller’s five-year-old, who was unbeaten in 11 outings before her last-start third in her first attempt at the distance in the Queen Elizabeth Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m), versus Moody-Coleman’s astounding four-year-old, who started out with a couple of losses but has since streaked to five straight wins, the latest in Randwick’s Doncaster Mile (Gr 1, 1600m) with breathtaking ease.

It looks on.

Sydney mare Autumn Glow is a certain starter. Sheza Alibi is also nominated for Caulfield’s Memsie Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) closer to her Pakenham base on Saturday week, but her owner Fred Noffke on Tuesday told ANZ Bloodstock News he was “75 per cent” certain she’d contest the Winx.

A flood of money for Sheza Alibi after her trackwork on Tuesday morning suggested heavily that the first-up match race would take place. With Noffke at least confirming his corner would definitely accept before Wednesday’s 9am deadline, Sheza Alibi firmed from $3.80 to $2.50, as Autumn Glow held firm at $1.60.

Mind you, the Winx shapes as something more than a two-horse race. The 17 nominations included 14 Group 1 winners, from Ceolwulf (Tavistock) to Aeliana (Castelvecchio), Autumn Boy (The Autumn Sun) to Beiwacht (Bivouac), Green Spaces (Street Boss) to Barnavara (Calyx), and several more.

That number might dwindle at acceptances, especially with some of Waller’s nominated 11 horses likely to come out, but as a first Group 1 of the Australian season it will be a must-watch way to kick off, certainly answering doubts about the Winx Stakes’ right to elite status.

It’s also definitely a fitting vehicle for Autumn Glow to resume, as she looks to atone for that Queen Elizabeth blip at the start of what shapes as her final 12 months of racing, leading to a likely Royal Ascot mission in England and a possible first cover from Dubawi (Dubai Millennium) whilst there.

“It’s going to be some sort of race,” Autumn Glow’s chief owner John Messara told ANZ Bloodstock News. “Certainly the best edition of the Winx Stakes ever, if not one of the best races ever.”

Both mares seem bursting to race.

“James [McDonald] got off after her exhibition gallop between races on Saturday and said she felt as good as she’s ever felt, and probably even a little better than she felt in the lead up to previous campaigns,” Messara said.

“He seems to be very happy. Our trainer says he’s got her ready for Saturday. Everyone’s very positive.”

Sheza Alibi won her second of two Pakenham synthetic jump outs last week and completed a sparkling piece of trackwork on Tuesday morning with Luke Nolen in the saddle. While Jamie Melham rode her with her 49 kilograms in her 4.29-length Doncaster romp, Nolen, who’s ridden the mare to three wins at heavier weights, would regain the ride in the Winx.

“She’s pretty forward, pretty well,” co-trainer Peter Moody said in an update to Noffke, posted on social media. “The horse is in great order, a happy, healthy girl. Hardly a bead of sweat on her. Pleasing work, and also a very pleasing recovery.”

That was resoundingly seconded by Noffke, the Queensland grazier whose $10,000 purchase has so far earned him $3.7 million.

“She looked magnificent today,” Noffke told ANZ. “She pulled up like she was walking out to the track, not coming back.

“Everything just appears to be even better than normal and it’s always been pretty great.”

However,  the only question fans and many all-in pre-acceptances punters will be dying to have confirmed, will she head north to the Winx?

“I’ve been 50/50 until this morning. Now I reckon I’m 75 per cent,” Noffke said on Tuesday, after speaking with Moody. “I’d like to say it’s 80 per cent, because that’s a sure thing in my world.

“None of us really know whether we’re going to be running or not. But Peter said she’ll tell us, and everything she’s telling us says she wants to go racing.

“We would’ve preferred to stay in Melbourne and go to the Memsie. But Sheza Alibi is saying ‘I’m ready, I’m ready’.

“And if you don’t race her, you run the risk of something shitty happening. If she runs into something, trips arse over head or something happens, all of a sudden you miss the Memsie.

The Golden Eagle is the main goal, It has to be. I use money to pay my bills, you know?”

FRED NOFFKE

“And Peter’s mindful that we need to race because that’s what she wants to do. Plus, it’s not like we’re trying to protect a perfect record.”

He added: “Holding her up for a week for the Memsie won’t make her any faster. To me, you aim at the first race that suits.

“Going on Peter’s mannerisms, what I can see of the horse and what I understand - yeah let’s race.

“If the bloods look good tonight, we’ll be there.”

Autumn Glow’s camp is also no longer mindful of protecting an unbeaten record, and Messara said he looked forward to the prospect of a battle with Sheza Alibi.

The lone Australian stakes winner for the relatively obscure former Coolmore shuttler Saxon Warrior (Deep Impact), Sheza Alibi finished last season with a rating of 115 compared to Autumn Glow’s 121, which was bettered in Australia only by the 122 of the stallion who won that Queen Elizabeth, Sir Delius (Frankel).

“I welcome it if Sheza Alibi comes up. That creates interest in racing,” Messara said.

“They’re both very good mares. They were going to meet at some stage I suppose, so it can be now if it has to be. The good horses can’t duck other good horses. They’ve got to stand up and compete.”

As for the million-dollar question, Messara said it was “very difficult to tell” who would win. He did, however, make the point that Sheza Alibi would be rising to weight-for-age for the first time.

“They’ve never got close to each other in racing,” the Arrowfield boss said. “But I was very impressed with her Doncaster win. I can still see it in my mind. She made up an enormous amount of ground, but she had very little weight, so it’s difficult to get a line on it.

“But she’s outstanding, certainly a worthy opponent, and who knows which way it will go.

“We are proven at weight-for-age. Most of our racing has been at weight-for-age, so I’m comfortable from that point of view. It’s difficult to say how Sheza Alibi will cope with weight-for-age competition, but you’d think she could handle it. She’s very smart, really smart.

“So we’ll wait and see. The confrontation, if they do meet, will tell us on that day which was the best, but they’re both very, very good.”

Noffke revealed a couple of jitters, but was happy enough to be tackling Autumn Glow.

“I’d probably prefer it to be over 1600 metres and prefer to be second-up rather than first-up,” he said.

“And we would prefer not to race against Autumn Glow, but if it needs to be it needs to be. But Peter said a long time ago, we fear no horse in Australia.

“Even if Autumn Glow wasn’t in there there’d be a good chance we’d still be going there. We’re not going there to race Autumn Glow, she’s just a horse who’s going to be in the race. It’s the race we want.”

Sheza Alibi is heading to the obvious choice of targets - the $10 million Golden Eagle (Gr 1, 1500m) for four-year-olds at Randwick on October 31.

“The Golden Eagle is the main goal,” Noffke said. “It has to be. I use money to pay my bills, you know?

“And if you’ve got the best four-year-old filly in Australia, and maybe the best four-year-old horse in Australia, you’d be an idiot not to be there.”

Messara said, pending discussions with Waller and co-owners Hermitage, last year’s Golden Eagle winner Autumn Glow could be kept “in her comfort zone” of 1400-1600-metre weight-for-age races this spring, or revert to the shorter distance of the $20 million The Everest (Gr 1, 1200m), for which Waller owns a slot.

He also said another attempt at 2000 metres was not out of the question despite the mare’s Queen Elizabeth dethroning, arguing that race was run “at a fierce pace”.

“I think she could win at 2000 metres, if it was run in a regular time, but I don’t she’s an out-and-out 2000 metre filly,” Messara said. “I think she’s a sprinter-miler, as her pedigree indicates.”

Now blessed with the finest athlete of his long history of racehorse ownership, Messara said he’d like Autumn Glow to compete at Royal Ascot next year, expressing a preference for the shorter Queen Elizabeth Jubilee Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) over the other possibility of the Queen Anne Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m).

That would also likely cap off her career, aged five, before retirement.

“I don’t want to give her too much racing,” Messara said. “Most of those mares who’ve been champions and raced on and on because they’ve been so good and kept winning, they just haven’t been producers.

“She’s absolutely dominated on the track, and I’d like to see her dominate in the breeding barn and leave us some great fillies and colts.

“There may even be a stallion in Europe that can’t be accessed here, we might go to at the time.”

Sheza Alibi (Credit: Racing Photos)

Frankel (Galileo) could be one such candidate, but since him covering Autumn Glow would effect a 3f x 4m duplication of Danehill (Danzig), Messara mused the Danehill-free Dubawi would be a better choice.

“The ideal one would be Dubawi, but he’s getting to a fairly old age at 24,” he said. “He would be the ideal mating on paper. He’s not big, Autumn Glow’s big. It would be a good balance of physicals.

“The Autumn Sun likes Dubawi mares,” he added, noting his own $1.3 million earner Know Thyself was one such product. “So if we switched it and put Dubawi over an Autumn Sun mare, that would probably work as well.

“But there’s good sons of Dubawi now coming to Australia, and there are others in Europe. I’m not closing off any options.”

Darley pair Too Darn Hot and Ghaiyyath are proven sons of Dubawi at stud in Australia, while his unproven sons include Arrowfield shuttler Lead Artist, Coolmore’s Delacroix and Rosemont’s Henry Longfellow.

Morning Briefing

Australia

Overall noms for Caulfield Cup down but internationals rise

Overall entries for October's Caulfield Cup (Gr 1, 2400m) are down this year, with 124 horses having been nominated for the historic 150th running of the race, headed by last year's winner and subsequent Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) champion Half Yours (St Jean).

Boosted to hold prize-money of $6 million for 2026, the race sees its entries down from 147 last year, while in 2024 there were 173 overall entries.

Local entries make up 92 of the 124, while the remaining 32 are internationals - a number that is up 12 from 2025.

A total of 14 of the 23 Australasian-trained Group 1 winners among the nominations have already been successful at the highest level over 2400 metres or further, with the Tony and Calvin McEvoy-trained Half Yours bidding to emulate Rising Fast (Alonzo), winner of successive Caulfield Cups in 1954 and 1955.

One of the most intriguing elements of the nominations is the emerging four-year-old generation with six of the 12 Australasian-trained four-year-olds nominated already Group 1 winners.

Australian Derby (Gr 1, 2400m) winner Green Spaces (Street Boss) leads that charge for trainer Bjorn Baker and will have the opportunity this spring to emulate Murray Baker's Mongolian Khan (Holy Roman Emperor), the last horse to win the Australian Derby and Caulfield Cup in the same calendar year when successful in 2015.

Four-year-olds have a good recent history in the Caulfield Cup, winning the race 12 times in the 21 editions between 1996 and 2016, with winners including Might And Power (Zabeel), Ethereal (Rhythm), Mummify (Jeune), Elvstroem (Danehill), Mongolian Khan and Jameka (Myboycharlie).

The mares are headed by two of the most accomplished horses among the nominations. Chris Waller has nominated five-year-old Aeliana (Castelvecchio), whose elite-level 2400-metre record includes victories in the Australian Derby and Tancred Stakes, while Matt Laurie’s Treasurethe Moment (Alabama Express) is also among the nominees.

Waller has assembled the largest Australasian-trained team with 18 nominations, while Ciaron Maher has 15 entries.

Meanwhile, two-time Melbourne Cup-winning trainer Joseph O’Brien is responsible for 15 nominations with 2024 Criterium de Saint-Cloud (Gr 1, 2000m) winner Tennessee Stud (Wootton Bassett) the lone Group 1 winner within O’Brien’s entries.

“The 150th Sportsbet Caulfield Cup is a significant milestone for the Melbourne Racing Club and Australian racing, and we are delighted with the quality and depth of horses nominated for this historic running,” Melbourne Racing Club chief executive officer Tanya Fullarton said.

“With 24 Group 1 winners among the nominations, including reigning Caulfield and Melbourne Cups champion Half Yours and an exciting group of emerging four-year-olds, there is enormous quality already building towards October.

“We have made this year’s Sportsbet Caulfield Cup the richest in the race’s history at $6 million, and the strong increase in international nominations adds another dimension to what is shaping as an outstanding 150th running of one of Australia’s great races.”

Moir a chance for Natural Fling

Natural Fling (Credit: Racing Photos)

Recent Quezette Stakes (Gr 3, 1100m) scorer Natural Fling (Home Affairs) could be set for a run in next month's Moir Stakes (Gr 1, 1000m). The Tony and Calvin McEvoy-trained filly would be bidding to join the likes of previous three-year-olds Extreme Choice (Not A Single Doubt) (2016), She Will Reign (Manhattan Rain) (2017) and Coolangatta (Written Tycoon) (2022) as winners of the Group 1 weight-for-age. “She’d have 50 kilograms over the 1000 metres and there’s no Black Caviar around,” Tony McEvoy told Racing.com. “The highlight sprinter is Jigsaw, who is a star, as well as The Everest winner Giga Kick, who trialed the other day, but is an older horse now. Not that many [three-year-olds] have been able to pull it off but she’s better than many so we will consider it. It’s on the table. I went the conservative way with Sunlight from the Quezette [into the Thoroughbred Club Stakes] but this might just be an opportunity for the filly. If she happened to go to the Moir and win it, you’d run next in the Manikato and then you go to a Coolmore [Stud Stakes], so it all fits in.”

Precise Star bidding to continue winning run

Precise Star (Zoustar) will bid to land a hat-trick of recent wins when he lines up in Wednesday's The Lawn Shed Class 2 Handicap (1680m) at Ipswich. Trained by Tony Gollan, the four-year-old son of Zoustar (Northern Meteor) had gone winless from seven outings before breaking his maiden at the Sunshine Coast over 1200 metres, and backed that up with another win in a Benchmark 58 (1400m) at the Gold Coast. The gelding's 59-kilo impost will be negated by apprentice Bella Youngberry's three-kilo claim. "I think the mile suits him," Gollan said. "He comes off a dominant win at Gold Coast so he steps to that midweek grade which I don't think will be too much for him and he has improved. He gets in well with Bella Youngberry's claim and he's the right horse for this race. There wasn't much we had to do with him after he arrived but he is a nice horse though he does have some quirks. He definitely has metro racing ability."

Doyle happy to run Heroic Deed at Warwick Farm

Heroic Deed pictured as a yearling (Credit: Kia Ora Stud)

Newcastle-based trainer Nathan Doyle has opted to send Heroic Deed (Farnan) to Warwick Farm on Wednesday as he seeks a city success with the four-year-old. The gelded son of Farnan (Not A Single Doubt) landed an 1150-metre contest on debut at Beaumont before then running second back at the track a month later. He was last seen returning with a victory in a Class 1 1200-metre handicap at Newcastle on August 1 and Doyle is hoping to strike while the iron’s hot in this week's Benchmark 72 (1200m). “I don’t think I’ve had one be that impressive for a while,’’ Doyle told Racing NSW. “He had no luck being three deep no cover but he just idled into the race, he didn’t even slap him up, gave him one squeeze at the furlong and that was it. I’d rather give a horse an opportunity going to town while they’re still down in the weights. I felt now is probably the right time and he seems to be a horse that should aim up heading to town.”

Valilee to make city debut

The Jake Hull-trained Valilee (Adelaide) will make his return to action at Warwick Farm on Wednesday. A now six-year-old, the son of Adelaide (Galileo) has only made four starts but has managed three wins and a second from that quartet of outings - recouping $71,000 of his $80,000 purchase price in prize-money. “He’s probably not bred to be that brilliant but he’s got a very high cruising speed and he’s quite fast,’’ Hull told Racing NSW. “As a young horse he had his issues, fractured his skull and had time off there and then went in the wind. He’s had his trials and tribulations but we’ve always had a lot of time for him, he’s always showed us he could really gallop.” Valilee resumes in the Ole Kirk @ Vinery Stud Handicap (1000m) and has produced two trial wins at Hawkesbury and Rosehill prior to the return. “I like to keep them down in grade as long as I can but with his rating he’s got to go to town and he’s done well enough to give him his chance in Sydney,’’ Hull added.

Racing NSW and Pony Club NSW join forces

Young riders from more than 220 Pony Clubs across NSW will gain new career pathways into the NSW thoroughbred racing industry, thanks to a landmark partnership agreement announced by Racing NSW and Pony Club NSW. The partnership will connect the 10,000 Pony Club NSW members with the racing industry as part of a strategy that will also grow demand for retired thoroughbred racehorses. Racing NSW acting chief executive Graeme Hinton says the partnership reflects the industry's commitment to equine welfare and to building genuine pathways for the next generation of industry workers. “This partnership formalises the industry’s long-standing relationship with Pony Club and opens up new opportunities for exciting careers in racing. So many of our leading participants have come through the Pony Club system which is a testament to the vital foundation of skills they are taught. Importantly, this partnership will also see more young riders introduced to retired thoroughbred racehorses and provided with the education and experience necessary to
support them."

Promising three-year-old sold to Aus

Spill It (Credit: Race Images)

Christchurch trainer Anna Furlong will be keeping a keen eye on the progress of promising three-year-old Spill It (Noverre) after the talented youngster was sold to Australia following his impressive Riccarton victory earlier this month. The son of Noverre (Savabeel) broke through at his second start over 1200 metres at Riccarton and will now continue his career in Sydney with champion trainer Chris Waller. “He's going to Chris Waller's,” Furlong said. “He's obviously going to be better on top of the ground and over a bit more of a trip, he's just got that beautiful, clean, correct stride. He's got good stride length and he's certainly going to mature into a lovely three-year-old. He's been a pleasure. He's got a wonderful nature, just does his job. He's very easy to handle, and he's just a pet, really.”

Ellerslie gallop entries closing soon

Ellerslie will open the course proper on Thursday, August 27 for horses wanting to gallop that are racing at Ellerslie on Saturday, September 5. For any connections interested, please advise by noon on Monday, August 24 with the horse(s) and name and race on September 5. The gallops will start at 7am and will take place out wide around marker pegs.

HK: Ka Ying Rising returns on Friday

Hong Kong superstar Ka Ying Rising (Shamexpress) returns in a barrier trial at Sha Tin on Friday. The David Hayes-trained gelding is riding a 20-race winning streak, having gone unbeaten in eight starts last season, and remains joint leader of the Longines World’s Best Racehorse Rankings alongside Ombudsman (Night Of Thunder). Hayes believes the five-year-old has returned even stronger following his spell, with Ka Ying Rising weighing 1189lb compared with around 1160lb during his successful The Everest (Gr 1, 1200m) campaign last year. Hayes intends to follow a similar preparation to last season, with Ka Ying Rising set to have two barrier trials before resuming at Sha Tin in early September and then travelling to Sydney for his defence of the $20 million Everest at Randwick.

UK: Dwyer confident Asfoora has York chance

Asfoora (Credit: Racing Photos)

Henry Dwyer feels that Asfoora (Flying Artie) has a bigger effort in her this campaign as she bids to make what is almost certainly her swansong in Friday's Nunthorpe Stakes (Gr 1, 5f) at York. The star eight-year-old mare landed the Group 1 sprint last year, and ran her best race to date this season when a length fourth in the King George Stakes (Gr 2, 5f) at Goodwood. “Doing it again, one last time, I dare say,” Dwyer told Racing.com. “I dare say this will definitely be the last time. I know her performances don't show it, but I reckon she's been going every bit as well this year, and she's looked as good, and her soundness has been as good. There's been no reason. You just need so much to go right in these five furlong races. You need to draw right. You need to be following the right horse. You need to be drawn near the speed. You need not to be exposed too early. You need the right track conditions. She just hasn't had the rub of the green this year.”

FR: Wootton Bassett colt breaks Arqana August Yearling Sale record

A Wootton Bassett (Iffraaj) colt topped the Arqana August Yearling Sale and broke the sale record when going to Coolmore for €4.6 million (approx. AU$7.48 million). M V Magnier engaged in a bidding war with Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum’s Godolphin but came out on top, way surpassing the sale's previous record of €3 million paid by Amo Racing for a Night Of Thunder (Dubawi) half-sister to Diamond Necklace (St Mark’s Basilica) last year. This year's sale topper is out of a Justify (Scat Daddy) mare that is a sister to Ascot Gold Cup (Gr 1, 2m 4f) winner Scandinavia. “First of all, we’re the clowns that sold the mare!” Magnier told The Racing Post after signing the docket. “It’s important that we sell good mares though, and we’ll be doing it again this year. We want people who support us to do well, so well done to Monceaux. It’s fantastic for them as they’ve been big supporters of ours. He’s a lovely horse, to be fair. He has everything; he has the pedigree, he’s by the right stallion, he ticked the boxes. Like I said, we were the clowns who sold the mare, let’s hope we’re not the clowns again.”

UK: See The Fire to be offered at Tatts December Mares Sale

Group 2 scorer See The Fire (Sea The Stars) is set to be offered during the Sceptre Session of the Tattersalls December Mares Sale. Taking place from November 30, December 3, the sale will see Jeff Smith's homebred as one of the highlights. Smith sold his four-time Group 1 winner Alcohol Free (No Nay Never) to BBA Ireland for 5.4 million guineas in 2022, and See The Fire is also going to be highly sought after, being by Sea The Stars (Cape Cross) and out of Smith's International Stakes (Gr 1, 1m 2.5f) winner Arabian Queen (Dubawi). The five-year-old mare landed the Middleton Fillies’ Stakes (Gr 2, 1m 2.5f) at York by 12 lengths last season before successfully defending her crown in the Group 2 earlier this year.
