Maiden Of The Week

Osorno (AUS) 2 c Exceed And Excel – Antillanca by Street Cry

Osorno justified 3-1 favouritism to score an impressive first-up win in 1200 metre juvenile sprint at Warwick Farm on Wednesday – his first success in six starts to date. He settled in second last place, wide with cover, in the 11-horse field from barrier ten before improving deep nearing the hometurn.

The James Cummings-trained colt then came with a strong late bid, seemingly with something in hand, to score by a neck from Echo Gem (Squamosa), with the same margin back to Onthetake (Krupt) in third, becoming the 16th juvenile winner for Exceed And Excel (Danehill) this season.

A Godolphin homebred, Osorno is the first foal out of the unraced Street Cry (Machiavellian) mare Antillanca, a half-sister to Ghisoni (Lonhro), who emulated her dam Portillo (Red Ransom) by winning the 2016 Surround Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m) – a 1400 metre contest for three-year-old fillies which has since been upgraded to Group 1 status.

The Peter Snowden-trained Portillo was also second to subsequent VRC Crown Oaks (Gr 1, 2500m) winner Samantha Miss (Redoute’s Choice) the same season.

Portillo is one of two elite winners together with Group 1-winning sprinter Snowland (Snippets) out of Snowdrift (Polish Precedent), who also produced dual Listed winner and sire Snippetson to Snippets (Lunchtime).

Snowdrift is in turn a daughter of Irish Listed handicap winner Snowtop (Thatching), who is also the ancestress of Group 1 juvenile winner and sire Myboycharlie (Danetime) and the Group 1-placed pair Asset (Marju) and Kendam (Kendargent).

Antillaca has also produced a rising two-year-old colt by Medaglia D’Oro (El Prado) named Stubai, who is yet to debut, and an unnamed foal brother to Osorno. The mare missed this year.

Osorno currently has no future entries.
