'We owe him so much' – Coolmore Australia's 'much-loved' stallion Fastnet Rock dies

Fastnet Rock (Danehill), one of Australia’s most influential stallions, has died at the age of 24, Coolmore Australia announced on Monday morning.

“Sadly, earlier today our much-loved champion sire Fastnet Rock was humanely euthanized at Coolmore, his place of birth and home for the past 20 years. In that time, Fastnet Rock forged a legacy that will see him recognized as one of the greatest stallions Australia has ever produced,” said Coolmore’s Tom Magnier.

“Coolmore Australia would not be what it is today without Fastnet Rock and we owe him so much.

What's On

“Sadly, he suffered an injury over the weekend, which deteriorated rapidly and we did not want him to suffer. He was born and prepared as a yearling here at Coolmore and raced in the navy silks for Paul Perry and our ownership partners.”

Bred by Linley Investments and partners and raised at Coolmore, Fastnet Rock was out of Group 3-winning juvenile Piccadilly Circus (Royal Academy) and, after being led out of the ring unsold at the 2003 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale, he was retained to race by the Magnier family’s operation and their partners.

Sent into training with Paul Perry, Fastnet Rock ran seven times as a juvenile and while he completed that campaign as a maiden, he did produce some solid efforts to finish second in both the Skyline Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) and Pago Pago Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m), while he also ran third in the Sires’ Produce Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m).

After opening his three-year-old year with a runner-up finish in the San Domenico Stakes (Gr 2, 1000m), Fastnet Rock got off the mark with a victory in the Up & Coming Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m), which he duly followed up with a Roman Consul Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) triumph.

He won back-to-back Group races over the Flemington carnival later that spring and then returned in the autumn to announce himself as Australia’s champion sprinter of that year, winning both the Lightning Stakes (Gr 1, 1000m) and the Oakleigh Plate (Gr 1, 1100m) before finishing runner-up in the Newmarket Handicap (Gr 1, 1200m) and TJ Smith Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m).

He was retired to stud after travel sickness thwarted Coolmore’s plans to run him at Royal Ascot.

While his feats on the racetrack were impressive, they were quickly eclipsed by his ability in the breeding shed. Like his father Danehill (Danzig), Fastnet Rock went on to be crowned champion sire of Australia on two occasions, first in 2011/2012 then again in 2014/2015. He was pensioned last year.

Magnier added: “Residing in the stallion barn for 20 years, he was the kindest and smartest horse you would ever meet and I’m so glad that we got to parade him one last time at the open day two weeks ago, where he looked incredible.

“This is such a sad day for everyone who has worked at Coolmore and played a part in Fastnet’s life. Our thoughts today are with all the staff who cared for him over the past 24 years.”

Fastnet Rock’s global reach was secured when he began shuttling to Coolmore’s Irish base in 2010, a journey he would undertake for the next 11 seasons, standing his final year in Europe in 2021.

In the southern hemisphere, Fastnet Rock’s 1145 winners are headed by 140 stakes scorers, led by 35 Group 1 winners. The group is led by Australia’s newly minted Horse Of The Year, Via Sistina, who is one of his 11 elite-level winners bred in the northern hemisphere. The Chris Waller-trained mare will shoot for her 11th top-flight win in Saturday’s Makybe Diva Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) at Flemington.

Globally, he is responsible for 197 stakes winners, headlined by a record-breaking 44 Group 1 winners, the most of any Australian-bred stallion.

While able to sire top-class horses of either sex, he will perhaps be best remembered for his ability to produce top-class fillies with 88 of his total number of stakes winners being female and featured among them are household names such as a Avantage, Atlantic Jewel, Sea Siren, Catchy, winner of the Blue Diamond Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m), Irish Lights and Unforgotten to name a small few.

Peter O’Brien, who worked for Coolmore for over 35 years, said the stallion was very much like his father Danehill.

Fastnet Rock's best progeny

of

“It is very sad and it’s the end of an era. He was the closest thing in temperament to Danehill - that’s the best way to describe him,” he told ANZ News.

“Danehill was a puppy dog and Fastnet was the same. I was thinking about it this afternoon; I was there when they bought his mother, I was there when he was conceived, I was there when he was born and he’s not only been a large part of my life, but a lot of people's lives. Lots of people have fond memories of the horse.

“He was exactly what the farm needed when he came along. To have him and Encosta De Lago, that was the cement that was needed at the beginning of Coolmore Australia. He was born and bred on the stud so he’s a full life cycle horse and he’s the embodiment of the farm.”

O’Brien said he was a very relaxed horse, a trait he believes he has instilled into many of his progeny.

“Whenever he raced he was so relaxed and he would fall asleep in the tie ups. His appetite was also insatiable, I’ve never seen a horse eat like it, even to this day,” he said.

Expanding on what makes his progeny so successful, O’Brien said: “Temperament, substance, action and they are all just absolutely bombproof.”

Fastnet Rock’s legacy has been secured by his daughters, who have produced 150 stakes winners in total and these numbers are spearheaded by 16 Group 1 winners including Golden Slipper (Gr 1, 1200m) winner Lady Of Camelot (Written Tycoon), Zougotcha (Zoustar) and the northern hemisphere-bred Warm Heart (Galileo), winner of the Yorkshire Oaks (Gr 1, 1m 4f) and Prix Vermeille (Gr 1, 2400m).

Such is his influence, Fastnet Rock has been champion broodmare sire in Australia for the past two seasons, breaking records for the progeny earnings of his daughters.

O’Brien said: “He has already been champion broodmare sire twice, champion sire twice - he has done everything.

“When I first came to Segenhoe we tried to get as many Fastnet Rock mares as possible and a lot of them are now our best producers. It is a beautiful, fitting tribute to him that at 24 years of age, Via Sistina was horse of the year in Australia. When she got horse of the year I thought a lot of the younger people coming through the industry now probably wouldn’t realise what an important horse he is, but Via Sistina just really franks it for the younger generation.”

Coolmore were able to show off Fastnet Rock one last time at their annual stallion parade two weeks ago and O’Brien said he looked fantastic.

“I said to Tom [Magnier] that he is an absolute testament to the bedrock of Coolmore how they look after and care for them. I couldn’t believe how well he looked two weeks’ ago. It is a testament to the Magnier family and his owners and particularly all the lads through the years who have looked after him,” he said.

Treasurethe Moment suffers ‘very mild’ case of colic

Treasurethe Moment (Credit: Racing Photos)

Yulong's four-time Group 1-winning mare Treasurethe Moment (Alabama Express) will miss this weekend's Makybe Diva Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) after suffering what her trainer Matt Laurie has described as a 'very mild case of colic'.

The four-year-old daughter of Alabama Express (Redoute's Choice) - who landed the VRC Oaks (Gr 1, 2500m), Vinery Stud Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m) and Australian Oaks (Gr 1, 2400m) last season - returned with a brilliant first-up success in the Memsie Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) last month and was set to tackle this weekend's Group 1 over a mile.

"It has been decided that Treasurethe Moment will not compete in the Makybe Diva Stakes this weekend and the stewards have been duly informed," Laurie said on Monday.

"Unfortunately, this morning 'Treasure' had a very mild case of colic. This was identified very quickly and out of precaution she was taken to hospital for observation.

"I can report she is in the best of care, she looks bright and her prognosis is very good.

"We will look at other race alternatives in due course, always keeping her best interest as a priority."

Treasurethe Moment also has a further three Group 2 wins to her four at the elite level, with her winning total standing at ten wins from 12 starts and over $3 million in prize-money.

Yulong had only last week revealed that the mare was being set for a blockbuster showdown with ownermate Via Sistina (Fastnet Rock) in October's Cox Plate (Gr 1, 2040m), however that decision is now up in the air following Monday’s news.

“That’s obviously going to be down to Matt [Laurie],” Yulong’s chief operating officer Sam Fairgray told The Verdict podcast.

“She is a four-year-old mare with plenty of options. Obviously with Via [Sistina] already Cox Plate bound, it’s not a necessity to have her heading that way.

“We’ll just see how she comes through the next few days and Matt can make that call.”

Via Sistina back in Makybe nominations

Following the news of Treasurethe Moment's bout of colic on Monday morning, champion mare Via Sistina was reinstated to Saturday's Makybe Diva Stakes at Flemington having originally been withdrawn. Owners Yulong made the decision just after 9am on Monday morning, with the Chris Waller-trained mare having been set to trial at Rosehill on Tuesday instead of this weekend's Group 1. “Chris [Waller] will have a think about that today and decide what he’s going to do,” Yulong’s chief operating officer Sam Fairgray told The Verdict podcast. “Obviously she was going to have a trial in Sydney tomorrow, but Chris will have a think and see what he thinks the best plan is, going forward.” Just like her ownermate Treasurethe Moment, Via Sistina made a winning return to action last month when landing the Winx Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m).

North England camp to try again

Having missed his scheduled first-up run in the San Domenico Stakes (Gr 3, 1000m) last month, the Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott-trained North England (Farnan) is set to line up in Saturday's Run To The Rose (Gr 2, 1200m) at Rosehill. The dual Group 3 scorer produced a below-par trial effort prior to his planned comeback, prompting his trainers to make a change of plans. "He struggled a bit in that trial," Bott said. "It might have been the [heavy] track and the conditions that didn't have him entirely comfortable at Canterbury. It was a bit below par and we needed to see a bit more before we pushed on to the path we've got him on." North England was sent back to the trials for a third time and finished a much improved second to The Everest (Gr 1, 1200m) contender Private Harry (Harry Angel) over 1030 metres at Rosehill on August 28. "He came back and trialled nicely the other day so we'll most likely see him link back into the program we had for him and go to The Run To The Rose," Bott said. "I thought that was a good trial. He seemed right back on track. "

Maher to field two in Archer Stakes

Ciaron Maher is hoping he can have at least one more Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) contender after this weekend as he bids to line up a pair of runners in Saturday's ballot-free Archer Stakes (Gr 3, 2500m) at Flemington. New Zealand-bred six-year-old Jennivamoose (Vadamos) will tackle the Group 3 contest alongside UK import Sayedaty Sadaty (Anodin). The latter, who ran down the field in last year's Caulfield Cup (Gr 1, 2400m), has hit form in Australia with two wins from his last three starts. "I reckon he should be pretty spot on for it," Maher told Racing.com. "He was good here the other day. They went a bit quick. I've waited for this race." Meanwhile, Jennivamoose will be chasing a hat-trick of victories this weekend in what will be her maiden crack at a stakes contest. "Two runs have been obviously very good here [at The Valley], but she seems very genuine and building through the line," Maher said. "She's got confidence. I don't think the track will matter. It is a bit of a step-up for her, but she is a horse full of confidence and she won't get too much weight I don't think."

El Vencedor crowned NZ Horse of the Year

Rich Hill Stud’s standing as a centre of thoroughbred excellence has been further emphasised with El Vencedor (Shocking) named New Zealand’s Horse of the Year. A son of the Waikato farm’s sire Shocking (Street Cry), El Vencedor was acknowledged as the country’s premier performer for the 2024/25 season at New Zealand Thoroughbred Racing’s black tie function in Hamilton on Sunday evening. Trained by Stephen Marsh, El Vencedor is raced by breeders Mark Freeman and David Price and was the only New Zealand-trained horse to win three Group 1 races last term. He was a runaway victor in the Herbie Dyke Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m) and Otaki-Maori WFA Classic (Gr 1, 1600m) and completed a hat-trick in the New Zealand Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m). His dominance saw him secure 45 of the 55 votes cast for the sport’s ultimate honour and also claimed the Champion Middle Distance Horse. “It really was another remarkable season for Shocking, with El Vencedor now a four-time Group 1 winner, and the Hayes boys’ Here To Shock flying over to take out the Group 1 BCD Group Sprint at Te Rapa before being nosed out of the Group 1 Canterbury Stakes at Royal Randwick,” Rich Hill’s John Thompson said. “Let’s not forget Packing Angel storming home for third in the prestigious Hong Kong Derby, and Scary, an eye-catching second in the Group 1 Victoria Derby. In the current breeding environment, Shocking’s recognised as a proven Group 1 sire with 6.5 per cent stakes winners to runners, and at his fee of $10,000 + GST offers breeders the best value in Australasia.”

Season looking good for quality stablemates

Group 1 glory eluded Wexford Stables at Ellerslie, but trainers Lance O’Sullivan and Andrew Scott were nevertheless buoyed by the performances of their representatives. Tomodachi (Tarzino) fared best of the stablemates when third in the Proisir Plate (Gr 1, 1400m) while Checkmate (Mongolian Khan) and Waitak (Proisir) were less than four lengths off the winner and Grail Seeker (Iffraaj) had no luck in the running. The Sir Peter Vela-bred and raced Tomodachi produced a top effort in her elite level debut and first outing since she claimed the Rotorua Stakes (Gr 3, 1400m) in the autumn. “We were really pleased and she’ll get her turn and win a nice race,” O’Sullivan said. “She’s definitely got a future and we think she can be better than what she was at the weekend, she’s still very wintery at the present time. She’s come through the race well and she’ll have three weeks in the paddock now with the idea of running in some of the better races later on, the Telegraph etc.” Checkmate will also enjoy some time off after his midfield finish on Saturday. “He’ll go to the paddock for a bit, probably close on three weeks out, with the idea of getting him ready for a race like the Rich Hill Mile and the Karaka four-year-old Mile,” O’Sullivan. “There’s a lot of improvement in him and he blooms a bit later in the season, but we were very pleased with his performance and he’s certainly up to them.”

UK: Just eight runners remain in St Leger contention

Aidan O'Brien appears to hold the aces as he bids to win Saturday's English St Leger Stakes (Gr 1, 1m 6.5f) for the third year in a row and for a ninth time in total. As well as ante-post favourite Scandinavia (Justify) and dual Derby winner Lambourn (Australia), O'Brien left Stay True (Galileo) and Saratoga (Camelot) in contention at Monday's confirmation stage, where the possible field for the final Classic of the year in Britain was whittled down to eight. O'Brien's triple Oaks winner Minnie Hauk (Frankel) was taken out of the race as expected, while any hope of a Leger winner trained in Yorkshire have also evaporated, as Epsom Derby (Gr 1m 4f) runner-up Lazy Griff (Protectionist) was officially scratched after suffering a recent setback. Carmers (Wootton Bassett), runner-up in the Great Voltigeur Stakes (Gr 2, 1m 4f), was left in along with the unexposed Stay True. Furthur (Waldgeist), second to Carmers in the Queen's Vase (Gr 2, 1m 6f) at Royal Ascot and an impressive winner of the Geoffrey Freer Stakes (Gr 3, 1m 5.5f), Tarriance (Frankel) - who like Furthur is trained by Andrew Balding - and Roger Varian's Rahiebb (Frankel) complete the possible line-up.

11 for Gun Runner

Three Chimneys Farm stallion Gun Runner (Candy Ride) chalked up his 11th individual elite-level winner on Sunday when Brant (2 c ex Tynan by Liam’s Map) landed the Del Mar Futurity Stakes (Gr 1, 7f) at Del Mar. In what was just his second career outing, the Bob Baffert-trained colt doubled his unbeaten tally as he defeated Desert Gate (Omaha Beach) by a length. There was a further three and a quarter lengths back to Civil Liberty (Independence Hall) in third. Bred by PTK Llc, Brant was first purchased by St. Clair Stables for US$200,000 at the 2024 Keeneland September Yearling Sale before being resold to current owners Zedan Racing Stables Inc for a record US$3,000,000 at this year's Ocala March Sale Two-Year-Old Sale. He is the only foal out of the winning Liam’s Map (Unbridled’s Song) mare Tynan. Gun Runner stood the 2025 northern hemisphere breeding season for a fee of $250,000 (approx. AU$379,310).

77 for No Nay Never

Coolmore’s former shuttler No Nay Never (Scat Daddy) sired his 77th individual stakes winner on Sunday when the John Sadler-trained Hey Nay Nay (2 c ex Travel by Street Cry) scored in the Del Mar Juvenile Turf Stakes (Gr 3, 8f). Ridden by Hector Berrios, the juvenile colt ran out a length and a half winner over Plutarch (Into Mischief) with a further length and a quarter back to Proletariat (Raging Bull) in third. Out of the winning Street Cry (Machiavellian) mare Travel, Hey Nay Nay is a half-brother to Grade 2 winner Global Storm (Night Of Thunder) and the stakes-placed winner Where I Wanna Be (Camelot). No Nay Never, who shuttled to Coolmore Australia between 2016-2019, stood the 2025 northern hemisphere breeding season at Coolmore Stud for a fee of €125,000 (approx. AU$222,370).

21 for Blue Point

Elmonjed (Credit: John Grossick Racing)

Darley’s former shuttler Blue Point (Shamardal) chalked up his 21st individual stakes winner on Sunday when Elmonjed (4 g ex Naafer by Oasis Dream) landed the Garrowby Stakes (Listed, 6f) at York. Ridden by Cieren Fallon for trainer William Haggas, the four-year-old gelding ran on well inside the closing stages to beat Crestofdistinction (Kodiac) by a head. There was a further three-quarters of a length back to Prince Of India (Wootton Bassett) in third. Bred and races by Shadwell Estates, Elmonjed is a half-brother to the stakes-placed winner Pinafore and winner Khanjar being the third foal out of the winning mare Naafer (Oasis Dream), herself a sister to Group 2 winner Ertijaal. Blue Point, who has shuttled between 2020-2024, has not returned for the 2025 southern hemisphere breeding season. He stood the northern hemisphere breeding season at Kildangan Stud for a fee of €100,000 (approx. AU$178,300).

Kiwi Chronicles

Group 1 racing kicks off in New Zealand

Quintessa (Credit: Race Images)

Lloyd Jackson

Kiwi Chronicles observed some quite interesting results this week, a number of which almost prompted a name change to The Observer.

On the local front however, the spectacular finishes to the Proisir Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) and the Gold Trail Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) were most certainly the standout performances.

As commentator George Simon rightly observed, he committed the cardinal sin of giving Lollapalooza (El Roca) no chance when the field turned for home. Two races later, for the Proisir Plate, he, like all of us, was stunned when Quintessa (Shamus Award), from a clear last, sprouted wings from the 200 metres to clobber a high-class field.

Belies pedigree

When right, Quintessa is a force to be reckoned with and she caught punters by surprise with an outstanding straight-long finish in the Group 1 feature. Last before reaching the straight, Rory Hutchings pulled the five-year-old mare wide. Out in the middle of the track with 200 metres to run she still had all but one of the field to pass but with a giant head of steam grabbed the lead inside the 50 metres and was travelling so fast she had a length and a half to spare at the line.

This year’s first Group 1 brought together a strong field including Group 1 winners La Crique (Vadamos), El Vencedor (Shocking), Legarto (Proisir), Waitak (Proisir) and Grail Seeker (Iffraaj), one of the best line-ups for the season opener in some years.

Hindsight is 20-20 but this time last year Quintessa took out the Cockram Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) at Caulfield. That too was fresh up after a break of 20 weeks. Fast forward to Saturday and her situation was similar, the Proisir Stakes her first run since early April.

Her 35 to 1 odds were justified as the Cockram was her last win and in the meantime she had run seven times, admittedly all in group company, with just a third placing in the Mannerism Stakes (Gr 3, 1400m) as her best effort.

A $170,000 David Ellis purchase from Book 1 of the 2022 NZB Karaka Yearling Sale, Quintessa added win six to the win column and took her earnings beyond $1 million, about two thirds of which she has earned in New Zealand. The Proisir Plate was her second Group 1 as she scored in Trentham’s Levin Classic (Gr 1, 1600m) at three. Her next start after the Levin Classic was a top-class fourth against the older runners in the BCD Sprint (Gr 1, 1400m).

By a Cox Plate (Gr 1, 2040m)-winning sire from a High Chaparral (Sadler’s Wells) mare who won five times from 2000 metres to 2700 metres, Quintessa is bred to stay and was given her chance to prove her bloodlines in the 2024 Australian Oaks (Gr 1, 2400m) - in which she finished fourth. Yet to win beyond 1600 metres, she belies her pedigree. Fresh, she has brilliance. At three she was quite tenacious and showed a lot of grit when winning. In her three tries beyond 1600 metres her best effort was second (in a head bobber) in the Alister Clarke Stakes (Gr 2, 2040m), not helped by losing a plate when galloped on.

Chaquinta, her dam, has produced two winners from three to race and ranks as a half-sister to six winners. Another half-sister, the unraced La Quinta (Tavistock), is the dam of the good stayer Dionysus (Ocean Park), a dual Group 3 winner of the Queen Elizabeth II Cup (2400m) and the Waikato Cup (2400m).

Zig-zag brilliance

The Group 3 Gold Trail Stakes (1200m) was one of three Saturday stakes traditionally staged at the Hastings track in the Hawkes Bay but which is undergoing refurbishment. One similarity to the Proisir Plate was that the Gold Trail winner was also last into the straight but Lollapalooza achieved her win by diving between runners, zig-zag fashion, in a terrific finishing run.

Lollapalooza (Credit: Race Images)

Last into the straight, Vinnie Colgan switched the filly back to the inner soon after straightening, found a gap at the 300 metres and improved to be sixth at the 200 metres. Continuing her improvement she had three to beat at the 100 metres then launched hard from the 50 metres to overwhelm her opponents.

This was just her fourth start. Lollapalooza was tried twice last season at two and must have impressed her trainers as she lined up in the Sistema Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) at her second start for a better-than-it-looked eighth. This time in she arrived at Ellerslie, still a maiden, on top of a solid and close second placing at Taupo last month.

Purchased by her co-trainer Graham Richardson for $30,000, Lollapalooza is well into the black with her earnings of $105,500. On reflection, her purchase price was likely much less than expected as she has some nice bloodlines, beginning with her dam, Carnival (Showcasing), a Group 3 winner of four races including Riccarton’s Stewards’ Stakes (1200m). She joins ten other stakes by Westbury Stud’s El Roca (Fastnet Rock).

Carnival is from a half-sister to Melbourne winner Speedalot (Prized), in turn the dam of Mr Nevermind (Iffraaj), a Listed winner in Malaysia whose 11 wins realised more than Rgt900,000 in earnings. Fourth dam, Labasso (Bassenthwaite), is a half-sister to twice New Zealand Thoroughbred Breeders’ Stakes (Gr 2, 1600m) victress Waikiki (Crested Wave). New Zealand Filly of the Year (2020) and New Zealand Oaks (Gr 1, 2400m) winner, Jennifer Eccles (Rip Van Winkle), can claim Waikiki as her great granddam.

Denting reputations

Although the Sir Colin Meads Trophy (Listed, 1200m) was not won in as scintillating fashion as the other two stakes races, the winner, Affirmative Action (Yes Yes Yes) dented a few reputations when holding on well after assuming the lead from the 300 metres.

Attracting well-performed runners from last season, namely favourite Hostility (I Am Invincible), He Who Dares (Snitzel) and Landlock (Merchant Navy), Affirmative Action arrived at Ellerslie still a maiden, the Sir Colin Meads just his second start after a third placing at Taupo last month. Only He Who Dares made a race of it, trying hard to run the winner down but Affirmative Action deserved the win after sitting outside the pace until the straight.

The three-year-old gelding has twice been through the ring, firstly in Sydney at the 2023 Inglis Australian Weanling Sale making $40,000. The following January, as part of Wentwood Grange’s draft at the 2024 NZB Karaka Yearling Sale (Book 2), he fetched $115,000, found by bloodstock agent Paul Moroney who must have been impressed by the his conformation because his family is thin on black-type. Affirmative Action is the first stakes winner in three generations of his immediate family and is the only foal of his dam to race.

Under his fourth dam Fayfa (Slip Anchor) appear Group 2 winners Contessa Vanessa (Bullbars) and Shuffle Dancer (I Am Invincible). Influential sires I am Invincible (Invincible Spirit) and Kodiac (Danehill) are both from Rafha (Kris), a half-sister to Fayfa.

Quite interesting

Both the Gold Trail Stakes and the Sir Colin Meads Trophy were won by maidens, which is significant but that fact carried over to Australia. At Randwick, the Furious Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) went to Apocalyptic (Extreme Choice), having just her second start. She was impressive, driving between runners to become the 15th individual stakes winner for Extreme Choice (Not A Single Doubt) to maintain a fabulous stakes winners to runners ratio of 11.2 per cent.

Apocalyptic (right) (Credit: Sportpix)

Topping them all was Rosberg (Deep Field) who landed Moonee Valley’s McKenzie Stakes (Listed, 1200m) on debut with a bounding finish that saw him gobble up the leaders with apparent ease then go on to win decisively.

Also interesting are the results of the ten races on the Ellerslie card, although they might create a frown on the faces of New Zealand breeders because eight of the ten winners were sired in Australia, including two of the three stakes winners, four of the eight were foaled in New Zealand including Quintessa.

Worthy?

Two starts in quality company in Melbourne - including a slashing second in Saturday’s Moir Stakes (Gr 1, 1000m) - is the record of New Zealand-trained Alabama Lass (Alabama Express). Has she done enough to warrant a slot in The Everest (Gr 1, 1200m) next month?

Slotholders could do a lot worse and except for an exciting barging finish from Baraqiel (Snitzel), Alabama Lass had the measure of the remainder of a strong field, going down by a half-length, the winner running 57.82 secs for the 1000 metres.

Co-trainer Ken Kelso was keen to test the weight-for age waters and was satisfied that she passed the test. This honest filly does not know how to run a bad race. Her ten starts have yielded six wins (four stakes) as well as four second placings, three of which have been achieved at the elite Group 1 level. Two of her wins and a Group 1 second have taken place right-handed (Ellerslie) so the Randwick way of going should not be a concern.

In the meantime, the September 26 Manikato Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) is her immediate goal. Should she succeed, there should be a queue of slotholders lining up for a piece of the action.

No surprises

Voting was decisive regarding the annual NZTR Awards, held in Hamilton on Sunday with El Vencedor dominant, claiming the prestigious Horse of the Year title.

El Vencedor (Credit: Race Images)

Of the two-year-olds, La Dorada (Super Seth) garnered 53 votes, the highest of all the categories, 46 votes ahead of Return To Conquer (Snitzel). Savaglee (Savabeel) topped the three-year-olds with 37 votes, ahead of Filly of The Year Leica Lucy (Derryn) who captured ten votes.

Grail Seeker (Iffraaj) was named Champion Sprinter-Miler with 34 votes ahead of Alabama Lass receiving 12 votes while Champion Stayer Willydoit (Tarzino) scored 41 votes ahead of Wolfgang (Puccini) with six votes.

The remaining title as Champion Middle Distance performer went to El Vencedor, also crowned Champion overall, securing 51 votes courtesy of his three successive Group 1s.
