Charm Stone (I Am Invincible) delivered on her immense promise under the lights at Moonee Valley on Friday night, powering home in the $1 million Manikato Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m), securing her second elite-level win in commanding fashion.

Having won the Sangster Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) against her own sex in Adelaide last season, the daughter of I Am Invincible (Invincible Spirit) took the leap into open company in her stride on her seasonal debut and entered the conversation for some the country’s leading sprints this season.

The mare’s managing owner Sheamus Mills told ANZ News that the result was an extremely satisfying one, both for the ownership group and the mare herself, who has had her fair share of bad luck along the way.

“When you win a Group 1 against your own sex that’s good – but winning against all-comers in what would be widely regarded as a pretty hot field, I was very happy,” he said.

“It was a pleasure for me because I felt it was justified for her,” he said. “She’s been top class since she was two. Obviously as a two-year-old she had pharyngitis, and then chipped a knee as a three-year-old and missed a year of racing. So I just felt happy for the horse. She deserved to win at that level.”

Mills bought the mare from her breeders Emirates Park for a whopping $1.55 million at the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale in 2022, with the agent having rated her not only physically, but mentally.

He said: “She looked like an adult among children even at that stage and showed all the signs of dominance I like to see in a filly.

What's On

“Physically you do your best to split hairs, but I think the psychology is underplayed. At the end of the day they are athletes, and I think sport’s psychology extends to the equine. They’re herd animals, and if I see a horse who looks to display dominant behaviour – it’s something I try to decipher.”

Before Friday’s race a ten per cent of the mare was offered on Inglis Digital and sold for $310,000 which valued the mare at $3.1 million.

“There was one other ten per cent owner and he’s got other business interests and decided he thought it was good timing…whether that’s right or wrong you can argue both ways,” Mills explained. “He might have got the upside because she was about to run in a Group 1.

There has never been any doubt of Charm Stone’s talent, but the mare has had to overcome some significant bumps throughout her sometimes frustrating career.

A winner of the Ottawa Stakes (Gr 3, 1000m) as a juvenile, propelling into early contention for the Blue Diamond Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m). The filly then went on to finish sixth in the Blue Diamond Prelude (Gr 2, 1100m) and then pharyngitis brought her juvenile campaign to a premature finish.

She returned as a three-year-old with a victory in the Quezette Stakes (Gr 3, 1100m), backing up that win with a triumph in the Atlantic Jewel Stakes (Listed, 1200m). After finishing fifth in the Golden Rose Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m), she was found to have a bone chip in her knee, which required surgery, leading her to miss the Coolmore Stud Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) and signalled another early end to a campaign which presented bundles of promise

Charm Stone’s consistency last season, which included a third place in the Rising Fast Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) and a runner-up spot in the Magic Millions Cup (RL, 1400m), was well-rewarded when she broke through for her first win in the highest company in the Sangster in Adelaide.

With a second Group 1 now safely on her growing CV, Charm Stone’s spring campaign is being meticulously considered by her trainers Mick Price and Michael Kent Jnr.

Mills said they have received ‘a fleeting enquiry’ from a slot holder for The Everest (Gr 1, 1200m) at Randwick on October 18, but no plans have been set in stone for the mare, with the ownership preferring to let her dictate the best path this spring, a preparation which will likely finish in the Champions Sprint (Gr 1, 1200m) at Flemington on October 8.

“There’s a race for her in Sydney [Sydney Stakes on Everest day] in three weeks, then in four weeks there’s the race at Moonee Valley [McEwen Stakes]— which is the path Imperatriz took when she resisted the offer to go to the Everest,” Mills said.

“Then three weeks after that it’s the Champion Sprint. Whether we see her again before that remains to be seen — it will be up to her pretty much. Her body language is quite expressive as to when she’s on song, so my conversation with Mick was: let’s wait until she’s bouncing around and feeling well. We’re not too worried about the calendar.

“The Sydney Stakes is a genuine good option on the same day that won’t have Ka Ying Rising in it, so that’s certainly there to look at. At the most we were going to have three runs for the prep, but she may only have two if she goes straight to the Champion Sprint.”

The fact that some of the best mares from recent times and yesteryear have won the Manikato is not lost on Mills. The race’s roll of honour includes Te Akau’s multiple Group 1-winning champion Imperatriz (I Am Invincible), subsequent Everest winner Bella Nipotina (Pride Of Dubai), Loving Gaby (I Am Invincible) as well as Miss Andretti and Sunline.

“It’s not a bad list. History only paints that picture. Often I’ll look at the history of a race and think my horse isn’t up to that level rather than trying to look at the present and see if you can beat the field. It’s often more of an advantage to go back and see what class of horses win the race.

“It’s been very satisfying. It’s a race that is steeped in history and quality,” he said. “All Group 1s are exciting, but I would put the Manikato in that class. I suppose at this stage it’s our crowning achievement.”

Charm Stone’s rise has been the textbook example of the investment model that Mills has championed: source well-bred fillies with athleticism and scope, then campaign them to add Group success to their value.

“Her future career will hopefully be on ice for at least 12 months,” he said. “That’s the archetype of our program. We’re trying to buy nice fillies with good pedigrees and increase their value. I guess she’s the pin-up for that.”

11 for Ribchester

Haunui Farm sire Ribchester (Iffraaj) sired his 11th individual stakes winner on Sunday when import Whisky On The Hill (6 g ex Ninja Lady by Nayef) landed a deserved first black-type win in the R M Ansett Classic (Listed, 2415m) at Mornington. Well supported after a close-up fifth in the Heatherlie Stakes (Listed, 1700m), the Glen Thompson-trained gelding enjoyed a soft run in transit before Declan Bates angled clear and the pair powered down the outside to beat Scary (Shocking) by 0.3 lengths, with Bankers Choice (Mongolian Khan) another 0.2 lengths back in third. “He’s a horse on the way up,” Thompson told Racing.com. “I thought he was in trouble when pocketed, but once he got out, the best horse won. It’s great to reward a loyal group of owners who have backed me all the way.” Bred by the Ninja Lady Partnership, Whisky On The Hill was a €50,000 Arqana yearling who later re-sold to Armando Duarte, Paul Moroney and Ballymore Stables for 135,000gns at the Tattersalls July Sale in 2023. He is the first stakes winner out of unraced Nayef (Gulch) mare Ninja Lady, herself a half-sister to seven winners including the Group 2-placed Oklahoma City (Oasis Dream).

Autumn Glow primed for maiden Group 1 tilt

Autumn Glow (Credit: Sportpix)

Unbeaten mare Autumn Glow (The Autumn Sun) will line up as a dominant $1.90 favourite in next Saturday’s Epsom Handicap (Gr 1, 1600m) at Randwick, and she might be scaring off more than just her rivals. No stranger to sending in large contingents to Randwick’s feature miles, Chris Waller admitted he may saddle only “two or three” Epsom runners this year, wary of pitching too many of his own against the top seed. “We’ll work that out on Monday but we will be less than normal,” the trainer said. “I think the top seed is going to be hard to beat.” Autumn Glow tuned up with a solo gallop between races at Rosehill on Saturday, where Kerrin McEvoy guided her over 1000 metres in 1:06.92, her final 600 metres in 36.94 seconds. The mare, who has won all six starts, is chasing a maiden Group 1 after dominant carnival victories in the Toy Show Quality (Gr 3, 1100m) and Theo Marks Stakes (Gr 2, 1300m). “Her preparation has been perfect,” Waller said. “Since her good last-start win she’s ticked over nicely at home. Today was about giving her a race day experience and making sure we were on track.”

Magic Time a live chance for The Everest

Cranbourne trainer Grahame Begg has not given up hope of securing a slot in the $20 million The Everest (Gr 1, 1200m), with star mare Magic Time (Hellbent) looming as one of the most credentialled contenders still in play. Just three vacancies remain for the October 18 Randwick feature, and the six-year-old’s CV stacks up strongly. The dual Group 1 winner has won five races at 1200 metres and has finished in the top three in 14 of her 22 starts. “There have been no offers but you wouldn’t rule it out,” Begg told Racing.com. “She’s in line. If something was to come, she’s in line because there’s a three-week buffer to that race, it gives us time to get her up to Sydney. She never runs a bad race.” Fresh from an eye-catching third in the Manikato Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) at The Valley on Friday night, Begg noted Magic Time didn’t quite handle the tight circuit but still closed well behind Charm Stone (I Am Invincible). “She went super … she’s going in the right direction,” he said. “I just reckon the last ten days she’s really started to hit her straps.” With Coolmore, Godolphin and new slot-holder Mulberry Racing yet to confirm their runners, Magic Time’s chance remains alive. Mulberry Racing’s racing manager Lachlan Sheridan acknowledged she’s firmly on their radar: “She’s definitely got the credentials, she’s a very good mare … everything is on the table,” he said.

Golden Path under Caulfield Cup consideration

Mick Price and Michael Kent Jnr are giving serious consideration to rolling the dice with Golden Path (Belardo) in next month’s Caulfield Cup (Gr 1, 2400m), believing the handicap conditions could provide their gelding with his best chance to land a Group 1. The stable confirmed that a start in Saturday’s Turnbull Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m) is the likely next step if they commit to the Cup on October 18. “We’ve had lengthy discussions with the ownership group, and we might have a throw at the Caulfield Cup,” Kent Jnr said. “If we are going that way, and I think we are, then the Turnbull is the likely lead-in.” Golden Path has built a strong foundation this spring, with a Flemington handicap victory sandwiched between a pair of Group 1 placings at Caulfield, most recently finishing third behind Sir Delius (Frankel) in the Underwood Stakes (Gr 1, 1800m). “Our opinion is he’s probably a couple of lengths shy of the best horses in weight-for-age races over 2000 metres,” Kent Jnr said. “His chance of winning a big race is in a handicap like the Caulfield Cup. He’s got 54.5 kilos, he’s in form, and I think he’ll enjoy 2400 metres.” While untested beyond 2000 metres, the stable is confident his racing style will suit the Caulfield Cup and that the $5 million opportunity is worth taking. “It’s a bit of a gamble, but we may not get the same opportunity next year,” Kent Jnr said.

Parchment Party poised to make Melbourne Cup history

Parchment Party (Credit: Supplied)

The likelihood of a first-ever American-trained runner in the Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) surged over the weekend, with Parchment Party (Constitution) among six internationals cleared to begin quarantine ahead of the $10 million Flemington showpiece on November 4.

Winner of the Belmont Gold Cup (Gr 2, 16f) in New York in June, Parchment Party carries the unique distinction of being prepared by US Hall of Fame trainer Bill Mott and ridden by world-renowned jockey Johnny Velazquez. The five-year-old recently shifted base to the UK to comply with Australian quarantine protocols and passed Racing Victoria’s mandatory distal limb scan, allowing him to enter pre-travel quarantine.

He is joined in quarantine by Joseph O’Brien’s pair of Al Riffa (Wootton Bassett), the Irish St Leger (Gr 1, 1m 6f) winner and equal $6 favourite for the Cup, and Goodie Two Shoes (Fastnet Rock), along with Japan’s Chevalier Rose (Deep Impact), Germany’s Flatten The Curve (Zarak), and Andrew Balding’s UK-trained Furthur (Waldgeist). All six are scheduled to fly to Melbourne between October 13–14, pending a final veterinary inspection.

Meanwhile, five more internationals – including Absurde (Fastnet Rock), Golden Snap (Gold Ship) and Meydaan (Frankel) – arrived in Melbourne on Sunday night to target the Caulfield and Melbourne Cups. They will complete post-arrival quarantine at Werribee.

Racing Victoria also confirmed that William Haggas’ Lake Forest (No Nay Never) will campaign in Sydney this spring, targeting the King Charles Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) at Randwick on October 18 before a possible tilt at Flemington’s Champions Mile (Gr 1, 1600m).

Shameless Star tops milestone week for Didhams

Shameless Star (Shamexpress) continued a week of milestone successes for the Didham family at Waverley on Sunday as the promising three-year-old delivered her co-trainer Peter Didham his 100th training victory when she landed the NZB Mega Maiden Series (1200m). This came just two days after he got his first win in partnership with his son, Trent Didham, courtesy of Danjuro (Saxon Warrior) at Otaki. Having run three times as a juvenile, Shameless Star was following on from a close-up second at Wanganui on her first start at three. Running again over 1200 metres, the filly travelled strongly in soft conditions under Kelly Myers and picked off her rivals turning for home to win by a length. Peter Didham said: “She’s a lovely horse but just very weak, she’s a picky eater and doesn’t carry much condition which makes her harder to train. She’s always had a tonne of ability, but just with her light frame she may be one of those horses who takes another six months to a year.
‘’Her last run was unlucky, she got a bit unbalanced and missed by a head, but Kelly did a beautiful job from a wide gate today and got her into the one-one on a fast pace. “She got to the front and wandered around a bit, but she was going away again at the line so it was a good, strong win. When she comes home, she can have a week in the paddock and she seems to enjoy being trained out of the paddock more so than the boxes, so we’ll be conscious of that.” Shameless Star was a $55,000 purchase by Exempt Bloodstock out of Woburn Farm’s draft at the Karaka Yearling Sales.

Notabad performance by New Zealand Cup hope

Notabadspillane (Credit: Trish Dunell)

Connections of Notabadspillane (Time Test) are eying up some Cup targets for their smart prospect after he ran out a comprehensive winner of the Inspire Racing St John’s Old Boys Syndicate (2100m) at Te Rapa on Saturday. The Shaun Phelan-trained son of Time Test (Dubawi) had run out a comfortable winner over a similar distance at the track a fortnight ago, and with regular rider Elen Nicholas in the saddle, he started favourite for the $65,000 contest. Racing prominently after a smart break, the big-striding stayer powered through the line to land victory by two and a half lengths. Phelan added: “Six months ago, if you lit him up early, he lost it at the end of the race. Now he’s so much more tractable, hopefully we’ve got a big Cup race in us somewhere. There’s one down south if we could get down there alright, but if not, there’s plenty around here and he loves Te Rapa.” Notabadspillane was bought by Phelan for $50,000 out of breeder Ardsley Stud’s draft at the Karaka Yearling Sales in 2022. He is a half-brother to New Zealand Oaks (Gr 1, 2400m) and Australian Oaks (Gr 1, 2400m) winner Pennyweka (Satono Aladdin).

Freebelle fires first-up at Waverley

Trainer Robbie Patterson was relieved to see the talented, but sometimes mercurial, Freebelle (Belardo) come out on top when landing the Murdoch Contracting 1400 at Waverley on Sunday. The mare had only debuted as a four-year-old last December but has notched up three wins and a placing from just six starts after her latest victory. Two of those came over a mile, so Patterson was pleasantly surprised when Freebelle powered on to win by a length and a half over Vibration (Proisir). Patterson said: “She’s a real staying type and not a big horse, so over the 1400 metres, I would’ve been very happy if she ran into about fifth. The pace in the race showed she’s got some real stamina inside her, she was flat to the boards the whole way so to round it off like that, she’s shown she’s above average. “I was never worried about the better track, she’s a very good-actioned horse and comes from a very good family over a few generations. I didn’t expect that over 1400 metres, so it’s a sign of a good stayer if they can do that fresh-up over 1400 metres. “We’ll find a nice race around three weeks’ time for her, I think there’s a 75 mile back at Waverley on their Cup day so I’ll take her back there for that. I’ll be patient with her and hopefully she’ll go to another level.”

Four for Screen Hero

Screen Hero (Grass Wonder), the sire of Arrowfield Stud shuttler Maurice, scored his fourth elite-level winner when Win Carnelian (8 h ex Cosmo Crystal by Meiner Love) took the Sprinters Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) at Nakayama on Sunday. The eight-year-old defeated June Blair (American Pharoah) by a head with Namura Clair (Mikki Isle) finishing a further length and a half further back in third. In winning the Grade 1, Win Carnelian becomes the first stakes winner in three generations of his family. Further down the pedigree the horse hails from the same family as Irish Oaks (Gr 1, 1m 4f) winner Colorspin (High Top), the dam of Group 1 winners Opera House (Sadler’s Wells), Kayf Tara (Sadler’s Wells) and Zee Zee Top (Zafonic).

International

Seven for Blame

The evergreen Claiborne Farm resident Blame (Arch) scored his seventh elite-level winner courtesy of Sibayan’s (4 g ex Sirrin by Sea The Stars) victory in Sunday’s Preis Von Europa (Gr 1, 2400m) at Cologne. Trained by Francis Graffard and bred and owned by the Aga Khan Studs, the gelding came into the race off the back of a pair of Group 2 wins in France and he justified his rise to the highest level when beating Tiffany (Farhh) by two and a half lengths with another nose back to Columbus (Oasis Dream) in third. Out of dual Listed winner Sirrin (Sea The Stars), Sibayan is brother to one other winner. Sirrin herself is a half-sister to the dam of Group 3 scorer Sonaiyla (Dark Angel).

28 for Havana Grey

Whitsbury Manor-based sire Havana Grey (Havana Gold) scored his 28th individual stakes winner when the Paddy Twomey-trained Black Caviar Gold (2 f ex Perfect Outing by Outstrip) landed the Weld Park Stakes (Gr 3, 7f) at the Curragh on Sunday. Ridden by Billy Lee, the filly followed up her recent maiden win when she defeated Pivotal Attack (Pinatubo) by two and three-quarter lengths. Minerva (Frankel) was another short-head away in third. Bought a foal at Tattersalls by Richard Knight for 140,000gns, Black Caviar Gold was then secured by Jason Kelly from Book 1 of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale for 270,000gns. Black Caviar Gold is out of the unplaced mare Perfect Outing (Outstrip), who is herself a half-sister to Listed winner Fourpenny Lane (Efisio), the dam of fellow stakes winner The Unicorn (Verglas). Havana Grey is represented in Australia this season by his dual Group 1-winning son Vandeek, who is standing his first season at Arrowfield Stud for a fee of $22,000 (inc GST).

154 for Lope De Vega

Ballylinch stalwart Lope De Vega (Shamardal) was provided with this 154th individual stakes winner when Saidi El Fal (4 c ex Storm To The Sea by Siyouni) landed the Prix Haras De Beaumont (Listed, 1650m) at Craon on Sunday. Trained by British-based Marco Botti, the colt defeated Excellent Believe (Make Believe) by two lengths with another five lengths back to Alem (Golden Horn) in third. The colt holds an entry for next week’s Arqana Arc Sale.

54 for Areion

The Henk Grewe-trained Shootout (4 g ex Saloon Sold by Soldier Hollow) landed the Sprint Trophy (Gr 3, 1400m) at Cologne on Sunday and in doing so provided Areion (Big Shuffle) with his 54th individual stakes winner. The gelding defeated Duty First (Showcasing) by a length and a half with another length and a quarter back to Schutzenzauber (Amaron) in third. An €80,000 BBAG-buy, Shootout is a half-brother to German Derby (Gr 1, 2400m) winner Sammarco (Camelot). Areion was euthanised in 2022 at the age of 27. Also at Cologne, Believe In Me (2 f ex Bravo Girl by Lord Of England) supplied the Haras de Beaumont resident Intello (Galileo) with his 28th individual stakes winner when she won the The juvenile is out of the multiple stakes-placed winner Bravo Girl (Lord Of England), a half-sister to Group 2 scorer Ajazxana (Rock Of Gibraltar).

Globetrotting Rebel’s Romance dominates Joe Hirsch Turf Classic

Godolphin’s globetrotting superstar Rebel’s Romance (7 g Dubawi – Minidress by Street Cry) added a remarkable ninth Group/Grade 1 victory to his CV on Saturday when he proved far too classy for his rivals in the US$275,000 Joe Hirsch Turf Classic (Gr 1, 12f) at Belmont At The Big A. Sent off the 13/20 favourite under Frankie Dettori, the Charlie Appleby-trained seven-year-old assumed the lead with a circuit to go and was never headed from there. After swinging into the home straight the last-start Grosser Preis von Berlin (Gr 1, 2400m) winner quickly asserted his dominance over the field, running out a three and a half-length winner and taking his record to 20 wins from 29 starts and over £11,269,144 (approx. AU$23,064,557) in prize-money. Redistricting (Kingman) filled the runner-up spot, while the winner’s stablemate El Cordobes (Frankel) finished another two and a half lengths back in third.

78 for Constitution

WinStar Farm stallion Constitution (Tapit) registered his 78th individual stakes winner when Patriot Spirit (4 c ex Mistical Plan by Game Plan) won the Vosburgh Stakes (Gr 3, 7f) at Belmont At The Big A on Sunday. Ridden by Javier Castellano for trainer Michael Campbell, the four-year-old colt was prominent throughout the seven-furlong contest and came away in the final furlong to score by a length and a half over Crazy Mason (Coal Front). Scotland (Good Magic) finished a neck further away in third. Bred by Blue Heaven Farm, Patriot Spirit is a half-brother to six winners, being the ninth foal out of Grade 1-winning mare Mistical Plan (Game Plan). He was a US$235,000 purchase for owner George Mellon at the 2023 Ocala March 2YO in Training Sale. Constitution stood at his Kentucky base for US$110,000 in 2025.

Third for Awesome Slew

Ocala Stud resident Awesome Slew (Awesome Again) sired his third individual stakes winner on Saturday when R Disaster (4 f ex Making Havoc by Gottcha Gold) landed the Gallant Bloom Stakes (Gr 2, 6.5f) at Aqueduct. The Saffie Joseph-trained four-year-old filly set the pace under Jose Ortiz and was not for catching, striding out in the stretch to win by three and a half lengths over Patricia Ann (Enticed), with another two lengths back to Sterling Silver (Cupid) in third. Bred by Ocala Stud & J. Michael O'Farrell Jr, R Disaster is the second foal out of winning mare Making Havoc (Gottcha Gold), also the dam of winner Dragging Main (Greenpointcrusader) and herself a half-sister to stakes winner Radios Jersey (Adios Charlie).

Locked extends perfect track record in Woodward

Locked (4 c Gun Runner – Luna Rosa) landed his second big-race win of the year when grinding out a victory in the Woodward Stakes (Gr 2, 9f) at Aqueduct. Winner of the Santa Anita Handicap (Gr 1, 10f) back in March, the son of Gun Runner (Candy Ride) aded Grade 2 honours to his CV when ultimately out-staying Phileas Fogg (Astern) to win by three quarters of a length. Post Time (Frosted) was another three and a half lengths back in what was a three-runner affair.

Mystik Dan adds fourth Graded win in Lukas Classic

Last year’s Kentucky Derby (Gr 1, 10f) winner Mystik Dan (4 c Goldenscents – Ma'am by Colonel John) was once again victorious at Churchill Downs when he landed the Lukas Classic Stakes (Gr 2, 9f) on Saturday. Trained by Kenneth McPeek, the four-year-old colt was behind a wall of horses at the top of the straight but was brave to take the gap when it came and went on to score by three-quarters of a length over Disarm (Gun Runner). Banashing (Ghostzapper) was another three and three-quarter lengths back in third.

Ten for Complexity

Airdrie Stud’s second-season sire Complexity (Maclean’s Music) notched up his tenth individual stakes winner when the Philip D'Amato-trained Innovative (3 f ex Lantiz by Tizway) took out the John C. Harris Stakes (Gr 3, 6.5f) at Santa Anita. The three-year-old was wide coming around the final bend but made rapid headway in the final stages to win by a neck over Lee’s Baby Girl (Malibu Moon), with Warming (Global Campaign) another half-length back in third. Bred by Hartmut Malluche and Silesia Farm, Innovative was initially a US$50,000 purchase for Thomas & Mitchell Bloodstock at the 2023 Keeneland September Yearling Sale and resold to owners Little Red Feather Racing for US$230,000 at the Ocala Spring 2YO Sale last year. She is the second foal and second winner out of stakes-placed mare Lantiz (Tizway).

Third for Omaha Beach

Spendthrift Farm sire Omaha Beach (War Front), who shuttled to Australia in 2020 and 2021, was supplied with his third individual Grade 1 winner on Saturday courtesy of Nevada Beach (3 c ex Morrow Cove by Yes It’s True) who landed a thrilling rendition of the Goodwood Stakes (Gr 1, 9f). Justify (Scat Daddy) colt Privman finished another three and a quarter lengths back in third. Bred by Paul, Phil and Christy Tackett, Nevada Beach was a US$260,000 purchase for The Three Amigos at the 2023 Keeneland September Yearling Sale. He is a half-brother to four winners and the fifth foal out of Listed winner Morrow Cove (Yes It’s True), herself a half-sister to Grade 1 winner Decked Out (Street Boss). Omaha Beach stood the 2025 northern hemisphere breeding season for US$35,000.

Reef Runner takes out Eddie D Stakes

Reef Runner (4 g The Big Beast – Paradise Bay by Blame) added a first Graded victory to his CV when claiming the Eddie D. Stakes (Gr 2, 6.5f) at Santa Anita on Saturday. Ridden by Armando Ayuso for trainer David Fawkes, the gelding ran out the half-length winner over Yellow Card (Lost Treasure), with Sorrento Sky (Prince Of Lir) another three lengths back in third place.

Gold Phoenix continues good form

The Philip D'Amato-trained Gold Phoenix (7 g Belardo – Magnifica by Mizzen Mast) made it back-to-back Grade 2 victories when he proved too good for his rivals in Saturday’s John Henry Turf Championship Stakes (Gr 2, 10f) at Santa Anita. Winner of the Del Mar Handicap (Gr 2, 11f) last time out, the gelding came from behind and kicked clear impressively in the final furlong to win by a length and a quarter over Stay Hot (Summer Front). Spy Catcher (Noble Mission) finished just a neck further away in third.

Ridden by Umberto Rispoli, the five-year-old entire sat in behind runners throughout the Grade 2 and made his challenge out wide off the final bend, blitzing to the front and going on to score by a length and a quarter. Cabu Spirit (Pioneerof The Nile) was second, with Almendares (Havana Grey) just a head further back in third.

My Wish’s star continues to rise with Celebration Cup success

My Wish (Credit: HKJC)

By Leo Schlink

ANZ News

My Wish (Flying Artie) remains on course for a tilt at the Hong Kong Mile (Gr 1, 1600m) in December after sweeping to an emphatic victory in the Celebration Cup Handicap (Gr 3, 1400m) at Sha Tin on Sunday.

Held up in the straight as jockey Luke Ferraris searched for clear running, My Wish (130lb) eventually weaved between runner-up Copartner Prance (Epaulette) and Pray For Mir (Justify) and powered to a length and a quarter margin in 1m 20.79s. Happy Together (Dragon Pulse) finished strongly for third, a short head further away.

Winner of the Hong Kong Classic Mile (1600m) and second in the Hong Kong Derby (2000m) last season, My Wish enhanced his overall record to five wins and five minor placings from 12 starts and prize-money of HK$22.7 million.

Ferraris believes My Wish is untapped.

“The sky is the limit with him and whatever we throw at him, he takes and does better so it’s really exciting going forward,” the South African said.

“[Last season] he’s finished a length behind Voyage Bubble and it probably wasn’t his best performance when beaten by Red Lion at the end of last ‘prep’ – which was a tough ‘prep’ – but with a freshen up and now that he’s filled out a bit, I don’t know where the ceiling is.”

Settling fourth behind the leaders, My Wish was poised to strike as the field entered the home straight but initially had nowhere to go.

“It just seemed like nothing was moving and then half a gap opened – and he’s as gutsy as ever – and I put him in it and he did the rest. He got me out of trouble,” Ferraris said.

Newnham said: “He’s a really good, tenacious little horse. He certainly showed today that he’s made improvement from last season and he’s going to be a force the rest of the season. It was actually one of the last things I said to Luke. I said ‘just trust the horse – you know when you need him, he’ll be there’.

“It did look a little complicated there for a few strides but once he got the gap, he put them away quite well. He’ll have the Group 2 miles – one next month (G2 Sha Tin Trophy Handicap) and one in November (G2 BOCHK Private Wealth Jockey Club Mile) – leading into December.”

“It’s a good way to start the season but we’ve still got the A-graders to come yet, so he’s got to improve a little bit more. But I think it’s there.”

Newnham also struck with Lucky Sam Gor (Press Statement), who was given a patient ride by Jerry Chau in landing the Class 4 Tailorbird Handicap (1400m).

Brett Crawford broke through in spectacular fashion for his first Hong Kong wins, slotting a double when Speedy Smartie (Satono Aladdin) triumphed in the Class 5 Tropicbird (1200m, dirt) and Ninja Derby (Ocean Park) prevailed in the Class 5 Woodpecker Handicap (1600m).

Fittingly, Crawford shared the milestone success with Karis Teetan (Speedy Success) and Lyle Hewitson (Ninja Derby), both of whom had forged strong links with Crawford in South Africa.

“It’s amazing, he’s [Crawford] been a great help to my career. When I was in South Africa, he gave me a chance to put my name up there when I was back in Cape Town and he trusted me and put me on a lot of good horses,” Teetan said.

“Hong Kong is a different place and I’ve been here for so long now and I just let Brett know that you just have to keep your head up and persist.”

Crawford, 54, saddled more than 1,400 winners in South Africa, landing many of the country’s major races.

He said: “Amazing day. I couldn’t be happier. I’m obviously very pleased. We’ve had a few horses run really good races so far. As long as we can keep horses running to their form – it’s nice to see a horse like this first run second and then build on that – that’s the goal for us.

“Obviously, we [Crawford and Teetan] go back a long time and I think it was over 12 years ago when he had a winner for me, so it’s a fantastic feeling. He’s put in a lot of work and he’s helped me a lot, so for me it’s like a milestone to see him back in the saddle and winning for me. A big thanks to him and his family.”

Reflecting on Ninja Derby’s performance, Crawford said: “Obviously from gate 14 it was a bit of a concern but I must give full credit to Lyle. I thought he rode an absolutely perfect race and gave the horse every chance.”

Tomodachi Kokoroe (Written Tycoon) blasted to victory in the Class 2 Magpie Handicap (1200m), setting a Class record of 1m 07.79s in the process while easing to a two-length win for David Hayes and Harry Bentley.

Covering the final 800m in 43.93s, the gelding eclipsed Thanks Forever’s (Duporth) Class record gallop of 1m 07.89, set in 2019, prompting Hayes to compare the effort to course record-holder Ka Ying Rising (1m 07.20s).

“This season, he’s given me the feeling that he’s really improved and can win in Class 1 now,” Hayes said. “That time and with the ease he won, is very impressive – that’s Ka Ying (Rising) time. He’ll keep going up in rating. He’s a good horse.”

Jimmy Ting and Keith Yeung combined for their first wins of the campaign when Flowing Riches (Denman) edged to victory in the Class 4 Parrot Handicap (1000m) before Zac Purton snapped a rare 40-ride run of outs when Frankie Lor’s Fun N Fun Together (Charm Spirit) scrambled to victory in the Class 4 Swallow Handicap (1200, dirt).

The eight-time Hong Kong champion sealed a race-to-race double when Packing Phoenix (Starspanngledbanner) scored on debut in the Class 4 Shrike Handicap (1200m) for Francis Lui and completed a treble on Ting’s Little Paradise (Toronado) in the Class 3 Cuckoo Handicap (1200m).

James Orman and Me Tsui also notched their first wins when Pope Cody (Showtime) clinched the Class 3 Mesia Handicap (1600m) and earned a PP Bonus of HK$1.5 million.

Hong Kong racing continues at Sha Tin on Wednesday with the National Day Raceday.
