Thursday morning’s official Caulfield trials offered the first public glimpse of some of Victoria’s most exciting juvenile prospects, with a strong field of two-year-olds stepping out on the Heath track.

What's On

The opening heat over 1000 metres for the older horses saw Tropicus (Too Darn Hot), a last-start winner of the Heath 1100 (Gr 3, 1100m), edge out a quality field in a blanket finish that included Group 1 winner Giga Kick (Scissor Kick) and Grahame Begg’s progressive mare Niance (Swiss Ace).

Bred and raced by Kia Ora Stud, the four-year-old entire is being aimed at the Schillaci Stakes (Gr 2, 1100m) back at Caulfield on Saturday week.

“We are very happy with him,” Kia Ora Stud’s racing manager Luke Wilkinson told ANZ News. “He is a horse that loves Caulfield and loves 1100 metres. We had an idea of maybe running him in the Manikato, and then we decided to just step through our grades.

“We won a Group 3 last start, so we're aiming to try to win a Group 2 in the Schillaci. He's a horse that races best fresh and spacing his runs, and Sam and Anthony are doing a fantastic job.”

The second heat, contested over 800 metres, was taken out by Profiteer (Capitalist) colt Commit for trainers Mick Price and Michael Kent Jnr.

A $90,000 purchase from the Lime Country Thoroughbreds draft at the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale in January, he stopped the clock at 48.44 seconds in a small field of three as he defeated Senza Nome (Yes Yes Yes) by 0.1 lengths, with Stomping Ground (Astern) a further 2.9 lengths behind in the final spot.

The juvenile fillies’ division began with a standout performance from Face The Wild (Wild Ruler), trained by Tony and Calvin McEvoy. The filly pinged the gates to score by 1.8 lengths in 47.56 seconds, leaving Lindsay Park-trained duo Torture, a $250,000 Karaka yearling by Cambridge Stud’s first crop sire Sword Of State (Snitzel) and a half-brother to Group 1 winner Ruthless Dame (Tavistock), and La Gitana, a $400,000 Inglis Easter Yearling Sale purchase by Coolmore freshman Home Affairs (I Am Invincible), chasing home.

Raced in the silks of First Light Racing, Face The Wild was purchased for $55,000 at the 2024 Inglis Australian Weanling Sale from the Alma Vale/Kitchwin Hills draft before then being bought by First Light and her trainers for $150,000 at the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale earlier this year.

“It was a really nice trial, she’s a nice filly, very professional, which she's shown all the way through,” Calvin McEvoy told ANZ News.

“We’ve been really pleased with the development she's taken physically and she's got a nice pedigree. She's really taking us all the way at the moment, so all going well, she'll be here in the Debutant Stakes.”

The filly is from the maiden crop of Newgate Farm’s exciting first-season sire Wild Ruler (Snitzel), who will be represented by The Wildling in the Gimcrack Stakes (Gr 3, 1000m) at Randwick on Saturday, and is out of a First Light-raced Charge Forward (Red Ransom) mare, Face Forward.

“Wild Ruler is a stallion that we, as a team, are very keen on, and being out of a Charge Forward mare has always been a plus. We had Sunlight, who's out of a Charge Forward mare,” McEvoy said.

First Light Racing director Tim Wilson echoed McEvoy's sentiment.

“She’s been very professional for a little while,” Wilson told ANZ News. “Calvin let us know a month ago that he worked up a dozen two-year-olds at Ballarat and she put her hand up to say she was as good as any of them.

“When you've got Tony and Calvin, who have got a two-year-old record the envy of any stable in terms of the quality of two-year-olds they produced from the numbers they have for their system, it gets you pretty excited when they tell you that yours is close to the best they've got.”

Wilson has long held ties to the filly’s family, having raced her dam Face Forward, who provided his operation with its first stakes-quality runner in its early stages a decade ago.

“We raced Mum, she was our first genuine, stakes-quality horse in our very early days. She won consecutive races down the straight at Flemington … Face Forward was our first proper stakes horse, even though she didn't win a stakes race, she did run fifth in a Listed race at Flemington, but she carried 60 kilos that day and got beat by a boy, carrying 56 [kilograms]. So she was the best horse in it at stakes level,” Wilson said.

“Given our connection with the family, she [Face The Wild] was just one that we had to have and we were delighted to get her. A few of the Face Forward owners from the day, ten years ago, have gone into ownership. Probably the only mistake we've made with her was we didn't keep a share for ourselves - we fully syndicated her, and she looks elite.”

Wilson was also taken by the stock of first-season sire Wild Ruler, and his confidence in the stallion has grown since, as with the filly.

“They seem to be nice horses,” he said. “We didn't go to Magic Millions specifically seeking out the stallion, but I did really like what we saw from his yearlings at the sales. So we ended up buying two. The other filly [out of Saratoga Treasure] goes really well too - she's jumping out on [Friday at Moe] for Mick Huglin.

“The two we've had through our system are both very professional, early running types. It was a bit of a punt, as it always is, when you go on a first-season stallion, but he was a son of Snitzel, so that's the main box ticked for him.”

Having impressed at home and at Caulfield on Thursday, Wilson is confident Face The Wild can make her presence felt when she steps out under raceday conditions, with the filly aiming to start in the Debutant Stakes (Listed, 1000m) at Caulfield on Wednesday, October 15.

“I know the boys were considering putting her down the straight at Flemington last week to get to the Maribyrnong Trial, which had a bit of nostalgia about it because I remember how much mum used to love the straight, but the Debutant Stakes would be a real feather in her cap so early in her career,” Wilson said.

“It's obviously a very good race historically, King’s Gambit won it, so it can certainly produce an elite two-year-old, but given she's been around Caulfield this morning, she's won her jump out really stylishly and ran really good time compared to the boys as well, you'd like to think she goes there and she's a terrific chance.”

The final heat of the morning clocked the fastest time of the day (47.23), with Free Flying (Snitzel) doing just that to score by a length over Tuzemak (Prague), with Dance The Boogie (Extreme Warrior) closely behind in third.

Raced in the bottle green silks of Yulong, Free Flying was a $750,000 purchase for James Bester from Coolmore at the Inglis Easter Yearling Sale and is trained by Ben, Will and JD Hayes.

Out of star mare Ennis Hill (Fastnet Rock), who was also trained by the Hayes camp, the filly hails from the family of Hips Don’t Lie (Stravinsky), Lake Geneva (Fastnet Rock), Acrobat (Fastnet Rock) and Learning To Fly (Justify).

“It was a really nice trial,” Ben Hayes told ANZ News. “It's a family that we know well. We actually trained Ennis Hill and she was an early type of horse as well. So to see her improve so much from her first to second and win her trial nicely, it gives us a lot of hope.

“We'll see how she pulls up and if she pulls up well, she'll put her hand up to look at maybe the Debutant, so we'll just monitor how she is and we'll go from there and hopefully she can get herself there.

“Yulong are in her and there's all the other people, good supporters of our stables, so if she's able to be fast and get some black type early, it's all a bonus and I'm really looking forward to seeing how she goes.”

Morning Briefing

Australia

71 for Zoustar

Multinational (7 g ex French Penn by Noverre) became the 71st individual stakes winner for Widden Stud’s flagship stallion Zoustar (Northern Meteor) when landing Thursday’s Hannans Handicap (Listed, 1400m) at Kalgoorlie. Ridden by Laqdar Ramoly for trainer Neville Parnham, the seven-year-old gelding defeated Secret Attraction (Savabeel) by 0.3 lengths with a further 1.3 lengths back to Cool Memory (Impending) in third. Out of the winning Noverre (Rahy) mare French Penn, Multinational is a half-brother to winners Jeilgosu (Barely A Moment), Francais (Not A Single Doubt), Off The Dial (Smart Missile) and Black Penn (Written Tycoon). Zoustar is standing for an unchanged fee of $275,000 (inc GST).

Sir Delius set for first Flemington foray

Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) equal favourite Sir Delius (Frankel) will have his first look at Flemington in Saturday’s Turnbull Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m), a key stop in his preparation towards Australia’s greatest race. The Underwood Stakes (Gr 1, 1800m) winner rallied strongly at Caulfield last start to extend his Australian record to two wins and a narrow second from three runs, but co-trainer Adrian Bott admitted the import didn’t appear completely comfortable around the tighter circuit. “He seems in really good shape,” Bott told Racing.com. “We kept the Turnbull open as an option, we wanted to give him a good look around at Flemington obviously with the main aim being the [Melbourne] Cup. He was good around Caulfield but he struggled a little around the track there, he didn’t seem completely at home so it was a great effort to win and pick himself up the way he did. It will be good to give him that experience around Flemington.” Drawn widest in barrier 14, Sir Delius was rated a $5 chance for the Turnbull on Thursday, behind Via Sistina (Fastnet Rock) ($2.45) and stablemate Aeliana (Castelvecchio) ($4.50). In the betting for the Cox Plate (Gr 1, 2040m) he sits on the second line behind Via Sistina. “He’s been consistent through the campaign and what we’ve seen from him, but he’s got amazing tenacity and was able to pick himself up and that’s going to take him so far this campaign,” Bott added. “Everything is done with the Melbourne Cup in mind, so the next two races are going to be tough for him, which we know of and are aware of. I think that’s the right path to be giving him that conditioning, the right races, the tough runs, the experience, the timing – it’s all with the Cup in mind.”

Gollan backs Antino to measure up in Turnbull Stakes

Queensland’s leading trainer Tony Gollan admits he’s surprised Antino (Redwood) has been overlooked in the betting for Saturday’s Turnbull Stakes at Flemington, with the gelding currently rated an $11 chance. Gollan, who this week learned he will be inducted into the Queensland Racing Hall of Fame, is confident his stable star is in the right shape to tackle the high-class field. “It is a bit amazing [Antino’s odds], but it’s such a good race, isn’t it?” Gollan told Racing.com. “It is a proper race. We’ve got the Cox Plate favourite, Caulfield Cup favourite and horses high up in the Melbourne Cup. It is a really, really good Turnbull Stakes. I think he should be a little bit shorter, but I train horses, I don’t frame markets. Market expectation won’t change how this horse is going to go, that’s for sure.” Winner of the Doomben Cup (Gr 1, 2000m) in May, Antino will again be tested against some of Australia’s premier weight-for-age horses on Saturday but Gollan believes the set-up plays into his strengths. “We feel he is as good as he was, Doomben Cup day,” he said. “If we are realistic about wanting to be competitive on Cox Plate day, then we need to be competitive this weekend, and I can’t see any reason he wouldn’t be. It’s a nice race, with good pressure in it, which really suits this horse. All of his best runs have been in races with good pressure in them.”

Half Yours ready for Turnbull test

If fate had played out differently, Half Yours (St Jean) might have been contesting The Metropolitan (Gr 1, 2400m) in Sydney this weekend rather than lining up in the Turnbull Stakes at Flemington. The Tony and Calvin McEvoy-trained gelding was initially set for the Randwick staying feature, but his spring path was disrupted when he missed a start as an emergency in the Kingston Town Stakes (Gr 3, 2000m) on September 20. Fortunately, the stable had also accepted for the Naturalism Stakes (Gr 3, 2000m) at Caulfield, and by winning that race he not only salvaged his campaign but booked his place in the Caulfield Cup (Gr 1, 2400m), for which he is now favourite. On Saturday he continues his build-up in the Turnbull, where barrier four gives jockey Jamie Melham the chance to give him an economical run. “We were relieved when we got into the Naturalism as he had to win to secure a [Caulfield] Cup start,” Calvin McEvoy said. “We were confident he could, but it was nice to see him do it.” The Turnbull presents a much sterner test, with Half Yours taking on some of Australia’s weight-for-age stars. “We don’t expect him to win, but we want to see him run well and hit the line. He’s very sound and very well, so he needs to run,” McEvoy said. Although connections briefly considered heading straight to the Caulfield Cup, history convinced them otherwise. “The Turnbull has been a good guide,” McEvoy said. “It’s the right lead-in to the cup.”

Bellazaine tough enough for quick turnaround in Edward Manifold

Bellazaine (Credit: Sportpix)

Tulloch Lodge’s promising filly Bellazaine (Zousain) will be asked to back up inside a week when she lines up in Saturday’s Edward Manifold Stakes (Gr 2, 1600m) at Flemington, having run a brave fifth in last weekend’s Thousand Guineas Prelude (Gr 2, 1400m) at Sandown. The three-year-old was beaten only half-a-length in the Prelude and her co-trainer Adrian Bott is confident she has the toughness to cope with the quick turnaround. “She’s tough,” Bott, who trains in partnership with Gai Waterhouse, told Racing.com. “You’ve only got to look at her two-year-old racing and the campaign and style of preparation she had to see that, so she should be able to handle that [seven-day back-up].” Bott was encouraged by the Prelude performance, noting that the daughter of Zousain (Zoustar) continues to improve with racing and is building towards a peak performance in the Thousand Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) later this month. “She wasn’t beaten far [last Saturday] and she was there for a long way. It was a really gutsy performance,” he said. “She got a bit lost up the straight [two starts ago], she was better last start and she’ll back up. She’s just starting to get fit now at this point of the preparation. She’ll appreciate getting out in trip and that will still set her up nicely to head on to the Guineas.”

Gilded Water bids to deliver King Charles III a Cup runner

King Charles III could yet have his first starter in the Melbourne Cup if promising stayer Gilded Water (Fastnet Rock) claims the golden ticket in Saturday’s The Bart Cummings (Gr 3, 2520m) at Flemington. The Ciaron Maher-trained gelding sits equal number 54 in the Cup Order of Entry and is currently unqualified, but victory in The Bart Cummings provides automatic entry into the $10 million feature. Bookmakers have him marked a dominant $2.15 favourite following his last-start Benchmark 84 win (2000m) at Caulfield. Gilded Water is among 14 runners needing to win to secure a Cup berth. A total of 11 others in the field are already qualified but remain well down the ballot order from the 66 still in contention. The presence of Robert Hickmott’s Revelare (So You Think) adds further intrigue. The lightly raced stayer has already guaranteed his Cup start after winning The Archer (Gr 3, 2500m) but will take his place on Saturday. Hickmott famously won The Bart Cummings in 2016 with Almandin (Monsun), who then progressed to victory in the Melbourne Cup at his next start. Revelare is one of three horses already exempt from the ballot, alongside Deakin (Australia) and American stayer Parchment Party (Constitution).

Knightsbridge to fly the Tulloch Lodge flag in Melbourne juvenile opener

The Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott yard again flexed its two-year-old muscle when winning six of the nine official trials at Randwick’s Kensington track last week, and one of those stars – Knightsbridge (Farnan) – will step out at Flemington on Saturday. While five of the trial winners will debut at Randwick in the Breeders’ Plate (Gr 3, 1000m) and Gimcrack Stakes (Gr 3, 1000m), Knightsbridge has been earmarked for the Maribyrnong Trial Stakes (Listed, 1000m) in Melbourne. “He was very honest in the trial, it was a good trial performance from him, very professional, so we just felt he was one that would handle that trip away and handle and conduct himself well up the straight,” Bott told Racing.com. “He’s settled in nicely. We’ve been able to take a few down previously and be successful in that race, so I thought he was probably the most suitable candidate out of our ones that trialled here [in Sydney]. He’s drawn well, James McDonald has taken the ride, so he’s got a lot of things in his favour.” A son of Golden Slipper (Gr 1, 1200m) winner Farnan (Not A Single Doubt), Knightsbridge showed his natural precocity when narrowly winning his 850-metre heat on September 22 over stablemate Our Emperor (Stay Inside). “He’s always been very natural and I think you saw that at the trials,” Bott said. “It was just a very professional performance and under pressure he kept rallying and kept finding, so there was a lot to like about it.”

Vauban out to bounce back in The Metropolitan

Co-trainer Adrian Bott believes Vauban (Galiway) can rebound from his below-par Kingston Town Stakes run when he lines up in The Metropolitan at Randwick on Saturday. The gelding carries top weight of 58.5 kilograms in the handicap, his third run this campaign after finishing a pleasing third first-up in the Chelmsford Stakes (Gr 2, 1600m) before a flat sixth in the Kingston Town. Stablemate Sir Delius, who beat him home in the Chelmsford, franked the form with his Underwood Stakes win and Bott is confident Vauban can strike back over a more suitable 2400 metres. “He’s training really well,” Bott, who trains in partnership with Gai Waterhouse, told Racing.com. “Naturally I was disappointed with his last run, purely based off how well I felt he was going. That was the first blemish this prep, but I think there were a few excuses. He might have just raced flat second-up, and getting to 2400 metres is more his trip. He’s got to carry the weight but he’s drawn well and he’s a class horse.” The Metropolitan serves as a key spring stepping stone, with the Caulfield Cup and Melbourne Cup the gelding’s ultimate aims.

Portelli confident Queen Of Clubs can capitalise in Tea Rose

A low draw has boosted Gary Portelli’s confidence that Queen Of Clubs (Maurice) can turn the tables on her Tea Rose Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m) conqueror Apocalyptic (Extreme Choice) when the pair clash again in Saturday’s Flight Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) at Randwick. The Maurice (Screen Hero) filly finished strongly for fourth in the Tea Rose after being forced back to last from a wide gate, but barrier four on Saturday presents a far kinder scenario. “We knew when the barrier draw came out we were no hope of winning the Tea Rose, so we just hoped to see her hit the line like she did,” Portelli said. “She passed everything we wanted to see. I think she’s got second and third covered. The winner’s the benchmark, but barriers win races and if she can be handier early, she’ll be in the fight.” A Rosehill winner over 1400 metres in June, Queen Of Clubs has built steadily towards the spring, flashing home for third in the Silver Shadow Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) before her Tea Rose effort. Portelli says the Flight Stakes trip is exactly what she has been crying out for. “She’s by a stallion who produces milers and 2000-metre horses, so the step up is ideal,” he said. “She’s flying and her gallop on Tuesday was fantastic.”

Willydoit ready for Epsom challenge

Willydoit (Credit: Race Images)

Last season’s New Zealand Derby (Gr 1, 2400m) winner Willydoit (Tarzino) returns to the big stage on Saturday, lining up in the Epsom Handicap (Gr 1, 1600m) at Randwick for trainer Ciaron Maher, with jockey Tommy Berry confident the gelding is ready to stamp himself at the elite mile level. While his Derby success underscored his staying ability, Berry believes the son of Tarzino (Tavistock) has developed into a sharper type, his genuine mile credentials on display when rapidly closing for eighth in the Tramway Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m) last start. “It [his Tramway run] was no surprise to the stable,” Berry told TABRadio. “Even though he has won a Derby, which horses can do at three and come back a little bit sharper at four, he had given the stable the indication he was a mile to 2000-metre horse. He was quite sharp and running good times. Another 200 metres first-up and he probably comes out and wins. The step up to a mile with a month between runs and a trial looks like it will suit him perfectly.” Drawn barrier two with 53 kilograms, Berry expects Willydoit to be ridden more positively than in previous campaigns. “He’s always had to be ridden too far back from bad alleys or sit wide and cover ground, and he’s been able to overcome that,” Berry said. “This is probably one of the first times he is going to have the opportunity to get into a rhythm and be happy.” With 14 engaged, Berry expects a more controlled tempo than usual in the Epsom, headed by unbeaten mare Autumn Glow (The Autumn Sun). “The favourite will be very hard to beat…but I am sure he will be snapping at her heels late,” he said.

Collett chases Australian Group 1 breakthrough

Group 1-winning New Zealand jockey Alysha Collett will chase her first Australian major at Randwick on Saturday, with two lightweight opportunities in the feature races. Collett partners Swiftfalcon (Exceedance) for Team Hawkes in the Epsom Handicap and Don Diego De Vega (Lope De Vega) for Annabel and Rob Archibald in The Metropolitan. Now based in Sydney, Collett has ridden in 17 Group 1s in Australia for two placings, and said persistence is starting to pay off. “The last four or five years I’ve fortunately had really good opportunities in Group 1s and been exposed to them, which is really nice,” Collett said. “It has been a slow battle but things are going really well. This year I’ve got really good support which is the main thing.” Swiftfalcon, who wears blinkers for the first time, was rated a $15 chance for the Epsom on Thursday, while Don Diego De Vega was rated a $34 hope for The Metropolitan. The Grafton Cup (Listed, 2350m) winner was luckless in the Newcastle Cup (Gr 3, 2300m) last time out, rearing at the start before running on late for sixth behind Soul Of Spain (Phoenix Of Spain). Annabel Archibald said the import took no harm from the run. “He only had a couple of weeks off after the Grafton Cup so there is loads of residual [fitness] there,” she said. “It was probably the ideal lead-up run into this.” Collett said of the gelding: “He got further back than anticipated but his work to the line was beautiful. With luck from the draw he can be competitive.” Collett also rides debutante Legaselli (King’s Legacy) for John Thompson in the Gimcrack Stakes.

Melody Belle filly set for debut

Lyrics ‘N’ Song (Written Tycoon), the first foal out of champion mare Melody Belle (Commands), will make her raceday debut at The Valley on Friday night. Raced by Fortuna Syndications, Melody Belle was trained by Stephen Autridge and Jamie Richards to win 19 races, including 14 Group 1s, earning more than $4 million and being crowned New Zealand Horse of the Year in successive seasons. Following her retirement, she was purchased by Yulong for $2.6 million at the 2021 Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale, with her first mating to Written Tycoon (Iglesia) producing Lyrics ‘N’ Song. Now in the care of Te Akau’s Cranbourne barn, the three-year-old has had three jump-outs, winning her most recent outing over 1000 metres. Trainer Mark Walker has been impressed with her progress. “She has jumped out nicely and she has inherited some of mum’s ability, I don’t know how much yet, but I think she is well above average at this stage,” Walker said. “We are very grateful Yulong gave us the first foal to train, and hopefully she is a good broodmare for them.” Lyrics ‘N’ Song will line up from barrier one in the Drummond Gold Plate (1200m). “It has come up quite a strong field, but she should acquit herself well,” Walker said.

Sulek surges to Sandown success

Progressive three-year-old Sulek (Super Seth) notched his first victory when landing the MRC Foundation Pin & Win Plate (1400m) at Sandown on Wednesday for trainer Dom Sutton. The gelded son of Super Seth (Dundeel) was having just his second start and after racing a little keenly early, settled midfield under jockey Billy Egan before comfortably reeling in the leaders and staving off the late challenge of runner-up Snitz Sonic (Snitzel) to score by 0.8 lengths. “He is still doing a little bit wrong. You could see in the home straight he just wanted to lug in slightly. I think it is just immaturity more than anything, but he definitely has a nice engine,” Sutton said. “He has done it in his trials, that is why we have put the winkers on to help him concentrate and make sure he is going as straight as possible, but with more experience under his belt, he will come good. It looked a little bit messy early, just trying to get a spot and he just got up on the bridle a tad. He just had to bring him back and get him into a rhythm halfway through. Once he found that spot and he dropped his head, it was a pretty painless watch from there. He has a contingent of UK owners in him, who are coming over for the carnival. It would be nice to be able to step him out for them when they arrive. But we will ultimately do what is best by the horse first. They are only three once, so we will just have a look at the calendar and see if there is a nice race for him over Melbourne Cup week.”

Lane to miss Derby Day as Japan calls again

Star jockey Damian Lane will be a notable absentee from Victoria Derby Day at Flemington, with the globetrotting rider instead booked to ride in Japan across that weekend. Lane, who has built an outstanding record during his regular stints in the country, will base himself there for much of November. His commitments begin at the Tenno Sho meeting in Tokyo on November 2, after which he will fly back to Melbourne for the Melbourne Cup, VRC Oaks (Gr 1, 2500m) and Champions Stakes Day programs at Flemington. He will then return to Japan for meetings on November 15 and 16, staying on until Japan Cup Day on November 30.

Milan Park treble shadowed by loss of top mare

Aromatic (Credit: Race Images)

Breeder-owner Tony Rider experienced the full spectrum of emotions on Wednesday, having celebrated a treble at Tauranga only to lose one of his best mares hours later. Rider’s Milan Park colours were carried to victory by Savvysuper (Super Seth), Just Call Me Jonny (Eminent) and Vickezzlastcall (Wrote), the latter emulating her multiple Group-winning half-sister Aromatic (Sacred Falls) by winning over a middle-distance. That evening Rider confirmed Aromatic had died after foaling complications. “We lost Aromatic last night, she foaled on Friday night with a dead foal and the foal put a foot through her bowel, so we lost the mare as well,” Rider said. “It is very, very sad for us, but animals, like humans, we live and die. It’s just life.” A Karaka purchase for Te Akau, Aromatic was repurchased by Rider after her racing career, which included wins in the Travis Stakes (Gr 2, 2000m) and Counties Cup (Gr 3, 2100m). Rider hopes Vickezzlastcall can continue the family legacy under Mark Walker and Sam Bergerson. “She just needs ground…hopefully she can step up to be like her half-sister,” he said. Craig Grylls guided all three Tauranga winners. Savvysuper, out of the Group 1-placed Savvy Dreams (Savabeel), was impressive fresh-up and remains for sale. “We took him to the sales but he didn’t sell as a yearling, so the idea was to race him and sell him from there,” Rider said.

Group 3 test for new Southland acquisition

Group 3 company beckons for Saint Bathans (Maurice), who has joined Ascot Park trainer Robert Dennis after a successful stint with Andrew Forsman. The gelding has won five races in New Zealand and Australia, with his best result at Group level being a runner-up finish to Habana (Zoustar) in last year’s Rich Hill Mile (Gr 2, 1600m). He has been leased to a group of Southland owners, with Dennis pleased at how he has settled in. “He arrived in terrific order from Andrew’s stable. He is a lovely, older gelding,” Dennis said. “We have leased him down here and put together a group to race him.” Saint Bathans debuted for the stable over 1100 metres at Gore and steps up to a more suitable mile in Friday’s Olphert Contracting Handicap (1600m). “His first-up run was more like a trial for him,” Dennis said. “Stepping up to the 1600 metres on Friday is a more suitable distance and he drops in weight too. The only concern is a Heavy 10 track. If he can get through that he will be competitive.” Stakes racing is the target if he fires. “We threw a nomination in for the TAB Racing Club Mile [Gr 3, 1600m], and if he does recapture his best form, that is certainly a race that he could be aiming towards,” Dennis said.

TAB Racing Club to wind down

The TAB Racing Club is set to wind down, with the business case for the experience-based programme no longer stacking up for operator Entain Australia & New Zealand. Modelled off sister company Ladbrokes’ popular Racing Club, the TAB Racing Club was launched last year and gives members the chance to experience the thrill of racehorse ownership without the cost. It has been well patronised, with around 18,000 New Zealand TAB customers joining the Club. They have experienced several highlights over the last year, starting with their first win at Ascot Park last November when Bella Ragazza (Tivaci) scored for trainer Robert Dennis. The Mark Walker and Sam Bergerson-trained In Haste (Snitzel) has been a standout for the Club, carrying their silks to victory in two of her four starts and finished runner-up in the Gold Trail Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) at Ellerslie last month. The TAB Racing Club’s latest victory came this past weekend when Transcend (So You Think) posted her second consecutive win for trainers Shaune Ritchie and Colm Murray at Te Rapa, much to the delight of several club members who got to experience the full raceday ownership experience. While the Club has been a hit, it requires a $2.5 million annual investment to operate, and Entain Australia & New Zealand has decided that business model is no longer viable. “This is a disciplined, responsible decision that allows us to get back to basics – selling bets and delivering strong returns to the New Zealand racing industry,” Entain ANZ chief executive Andrew Vouris said. “This decision is about discipline, focus, and doing what’s right for the long term – winning, but not at all costs.”

Faber scores first training win

Te Aroha horsewoman Emma Faber crossed over the Kaimai range to record her first training win at Tauranga on Wednesday, courtesy of Reckoning (Echoes Of Heaven) in the Tauranga Crossing Fashions In The Field November 1st (1400m). It was the second start for the Echoes Of Heaven (Encosta De Lago) four-year-old, having run seventh on debut over 1200 metres at Ellerslie last month, and Faber was confident of an improved performance. The gelding had shown plenty of promise at home and at the trials, winning his 1100-metre heat at Avondale prior to his debut, and Faber was thrilled he was able to realise that potential on raceday, running out a 2.3 lengths victor over Mission Complete (Ferrando) under jockey Samantha Collett. “It was very exciting,” Faber said. “He showed plenty and even before his first trial this campaign we knew we had a horse with plenty of ability. He has just been quite slow coming to it mentally, he is a bit of a difficult horse to handle and he is still very green. Even the race that he won, he still came around the corner on the wrong leg and was looking around. He is going to improve from that quite a lot, that’s the best part of it.”

17 for St Mark’s Basilica

Coolmore shuttler St Mark’s Basilica (Siyouni) supplied his 17th individual winner on Thursday when the Ralph Beckett-trained Lady Roisia (2 f ex Talent by New Approach) landed a fillies’ maiden over a mile and a half-furlong at Nottingham. Ridden by Hector Crouch, the juvenile improved upon a debut third to beat Enchanted Queen (Ghaiyyath) by a half-length. There was a further length and a half back to Harriet Quimby (Pinatubo) in third. Lady Roisia was purchased for 575,000gns by Jill Lamb Bloodstock and her owners Newsells Park Stud at the 2023 Tattersalls December Foal Sale. A half-sister to Group 2 winner Ambition (Dubawi) and further winners Harper's Ferry (Lope De Vega), Aerospace (Sea The Stars) and Pretty Fair (Dubawi), she is the seventh foal out of the Epsom Oaks (Gr 1, 1m 4f)-winning mare Talent (New Approach). St Mark’s Basilica is standing at Coolmore Australia for an unchanged fee of $38,500 (inc GST).

142 for Sea The Stars

Alzahir (red and blue silks) (Credit: Racing Post)

Gilltown Stud resident Sea The Stars (Cape Cross) sired his 142nd individual stakes winner when Alzahir (5 g ex Cup Cake by Singspiel) scored in the Prix de Bonneval (Listed, 1100m) at Chantilly on Thursday. Ridden by Darragh Keenan for trainer Jennie Candlish, the five-year-old gelding kicked four lengths clear two furlongs from home before holding on well from the fast-finishing Charibelle (Kodiac) to win by three-quarters of a length. There was a further length and three-quarters back to Kerkila (Too Darn Hot) in third. The seventh foal out of the winning Singspiel (In The Wings) mare Cup Cake, Alzahir is a half-brother to Grade 1 winner Suedois (Le Havre). Sea The Stars stood the 2025 northern hemisphere breeding season for a fee of €250,000 (approx. AU$444,500).

FR: Field of 18 confirmed for Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe as draws confirmed

Minnie Hauk (Frankel) is the clear 7-2 favourite for Sunday's Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe (Gr 1, 2400m) after being drawn in stall one as the final field of 18 was confirmed on Thursday for at Longchamp. Japan's leading contenders Byzantine Dream (Epiphaneia) and Croix Du Nord (Kitasan Black) were drawn in two of the four widest slots, while the David O'Meara-trained Estrange (Night Of Thunder) had the widest berth of all in 18. No Arc winner has come from stall one since Zarkava (Zamindar) in 2008. Minnie Hauk, the mount of Christophe Soumillon, was supplemented for the race by Aidan O'Brien on Wednesday at a fee of €120,000 (approx. AU$213,360) and is tackled in the betting by 2024 Arc runner-up Aventure (Sea The Stars), who drifted to 9-2 after being drawn in stall 12. Past winners Found (Galileo) (2016) and Torquator Tasso (Adlerflug) (2021) came from her stall in 12. O'Brien also runs the Wayne Lordan-ridden Los Angeles (Camelot), who is in stall 14. Byzantine Dream, the mount of Oisin Murphy, was handed stall 15, while the draw looks to be against Japanese Derby (Gr 1, 2400m) winner Croix Du Nord in 17 and Estrange in 18. No horse has won the Arc from those stalls since Racing Post records began in 1988. The third Japanese challenger, Alohi Alii (Duramente), was given a more favourable position in stall four while Leffard (Le Havre) was handed stall six, the berth which has produced the most winners in the last 40 years. The British contingent is headed by Kalpana (Study Of Man) in stall ten, representing Juddmonte who won the race 12 months ago with Bluestocking (Camelot). The Jessica Harrington-trained Hotazhell (Too Darn Hot) comes from stall 11, which has not produced an Arc winner this century.

UK: Elite Status to stand at Whitsbury Manor Stud

Havana Grey’s (Havana Gold) dual Group-winning son Elite Status has been retired from racing and will stand at Whitsbury Manor Stud for the 2026 breeding season. Purchased as a yearling by his trainer Karl Burke for 325,000gns, Elite Status justified his lofty home reputation with a facile debut win before easily landing the National Stakes (Listed, 5f) on his next start. He went on to defeat subsequent Group 1 winner Sajir (Make Believe) in the Prix De Cabourg (Gr 3, 1200m) as a two-year-old, before training on to break the six-furlong Newbury track record in the Hackwood Stakes (Gr 3, 6f) as a three-year-old. This performance gave him a Racing Post rating of 119, making him the highest rated performer by his illustrious young sire. Ed Harper, director of Whitsbury Manor Stud, said: “We have loved everything about Elite Status since the day he was born. He knocked our eyes out as a foal at home and it's fantastic we now get to support him with our mares that have already bred top runners by Havana Grey. He’s not only a stunning looking horse, but he was rated 4lbs higher than his sire and 6lbs higher than his grand sire, so he’s the full package.”

IRE: State Of Rest filly tops lively Goffs Orby Book 2 trade

A well-related filly from the debut crop of Newgate Farm shuttler State Of Rest (Starspangledbanner) took top billing during a notably solid opening session of Book 2 of the Goffs Orby Yearling Sale. Richard Ryan, talent scout to State Of Rest’s original owner Teme Valley Racing, made a determined play to secure the six-figure youngster, but it was ultimately Alanood Althani’s name who appeared on the docket at €150,000 (approx. AU$266,700). The filly, the fourth foal out of the Listed-placed Sea The Stars mare Duchess Of Danzig, was presented by The Castlebridge Consignment and bred by the chairman of Horse Racing Ireland, Nicky Hartery. State Of Rest, who won four top-level prizes in four different countries including the 2021 Cox Plate (Gr 1, 2040m), stands in the northern hemisphere at the Cashman family’s Rathbarry Stud, where he covered a 115-strong debut book and is currently priced at $22,000 (inc GST) for Australia's 2025 breeding season. Trade was brisk from the off in Book 2, and by the time 219 yearlings had been offered, 185 had found a home for a clearance rate of 84 per cent. Those transactions drove turnover up by 27 per cent year-on-year to €4,853,500 (approx. AU$8.62 million). The average price rose by 24 per cent to €26,235 (approx. AU$46,650), while the median climbed fully 33 per cent to €20,000 (approx. AU$35,560).

77 for Night Of Thunder

Ryka (3 f ex Tulip Field by Golden Horn) became the 77th individual stakes winner for Darley’s former shuttler Night Of Thunder (Dubawi) when landing Wednesday’s Prix Panacee (Listed, 2400m) at Toulouse. Ridden by Aurelien Lemaitre for trainer David O’Meara, the three-year-old filly came clear inside the final furlong to beat fellow UK raider Lady Vivian (Camelot) by two lengths. There was a further three-quarters of a length back to War Of Dance (Muhaarar) in third place. A 105,000gns purchase for Jason Kelly Bloodstock during Book 1 of the 2023 Tattersalls October Yearling Sale, Ryka races in the colours of Akela Thoroughbreds. She is the first foal out of the winning Golden Horn (Cape Cross) mare Tulip Field, herself closely related to Listed winner Valletta (Cape Cross) and a half-sister to Group 3 winner Veracity (Lomitas). Night Of Thunder, who shuttled to Darley Australia for one season in 2016, stood the 2025 northern hemisphere breeding season for a fee of €150,000 (approx. AU$266,700).

‘If we can’t get the old man, let’s go for Vandeek’ – Arrowfield’s bold new sprint bet

By Trevor Marshallsea

Vandeek (Credit: Cheveley Park Stud)

John Messara is a byword of Australian breeding, a man who founded Arrowfield Stud in the 1980s and built it into not only one of the thoroughbred powerhouses of the famed Hunter Valley, but this nation and indeed the world.

His reputation on stallions is unsurpassed, with the now 78-year-old having brought Danehill (Danzig) to Australia along with other highly successful imports in the South American Hussonet (Mr Prospector) and Japan’s Maurice (Screen Hero), while also standing local legends including Redoute’s Choice (Danehill), Snitzel (Redoute’s Choice) and, more lately, The Autumn Sun (Redoute’s Choice).

So when Messara - an Egyptian-born 1950s immigrant of Greek descent, who parlayed his stockbroking business into the horse world - talks stallions, it’s best to listen.

His latest play in the foreign stallion market is Vandeek (Havana Grey), who’s begun serving his first book at Arrowfield for AU$22,000 (inc GST). He shuttles on arrangement from Cheveley Park.

Vandeek, Messara says, fitted both the Australian profile and Arrowfield’s needs.

Bred in Wales by Maywood Stud, the flashy son of the sensational Havana Grey (Havana Gold) was a runaway success as a two-year-old, unbeaten in four starts capped by back-to-back elite six furlong successes in Deauville’s Prix Morny (Gr 1, 1200m) and Newmarket’s Middle Park Stakes (Gr 1, 6f).

Gallant third placings at three over six furlongs in Haydock’s Group 2 Sandy Lane Stakes and against older horses in Newmarket’s Group 1 July Cup followed.

Vandeek has already proven hugely popular in Australia, with his book full at a capped 150 mares even before southern breeders could clap eyes on him at Arrowfield’s Open Day, a week before breeding kicked off on September 1.

Anabaa (Credit: Phil Smith)

There were some hitches and changes of tack before it happened, but Messara was finally delighted when Arrowfield secured the four-year-old as one of six stallions to be standing there this spring.

The chase was precipitated by one near inevitability. The great Snitzel had been four times Australian champion sire - uninterrupted from 2017-20 - and has been crowned its leading two-year-old sire five times from to 2017 to the most recent season that finished on July 31.

But the son of Redoute’s Choice (by that nine-time Australian Champion sire Danehill) was growing long in the tooth, and his increasing health problems would eventually lead to him being euthanised three months ago, aged 23.

Arrowfield’s other stallions promised much in the way of class and stamina but were perhaps short on precocity, including Maurice - a six-time elite-level winner from a mile to ten furlongs - and The Autumn Sun, whose five elite victories comprised one at seven furlongs, three at a mile, and one at ten furlongs.

As any self-respecting Australian stud would, Arrowfield made enquiries about Havana Grey himself, who’d scorched up the stud charts as Europe’s champion first, second and third-season sire, from 2022-24. Unsurprisingly for a stallion this hot, Whitsbury Manor Stud wasn’t inclined to send him to Australia.

Arrowfield looked a generation lower - to Vandeek - and to their considerable excitement, discovered a chance had arisen to buy into the new sire, with a stake Messara recalls as around 25 per cent being put up for tender.

“We thought he was the best son of Havana Grey, and if we can’t get the old man, let’s go for Vandeek,” Messara said.

“He was a champion sprinter, and with a nice pedigree. And, while we’ve got stallions who would get a two-year-old, we didn’t really have an obvious, or a specialist, two-year-old getter, with Snitzel starting to look like he might be on the way out.

“We thought Vandeek would fit well into our roster.”

Aside from his two-year-old racing record being suited to Australia’s near obsession with that caper, Vandeek’s pedigree contained a major lure for the country’s market.

Vandeek’s dam Mosa Mine (Exceed And Excel) is out of Baldemosa (Lead On Time), whose half-sister, French Group 1 winner Balbonella (Gay Mecene), is the dam of champion sprinter and leading dual hemisphere sire Anabaa (Danzig) (as well as French 1,000 Guineas Group 1 winner Always Loyal).

Anabaa, by Danehill’s sire Danzig (Northern Dancer), enjoyed much success in 11 seasons of shuttling to Australia, siring 30 stakes winners at 7.1 per cent of runners, with seven Group 1 victors in Australia and New Zealand.

“Having Anabaa in the third dam was another attraction,” Messara said. “He’d been a really good stallion in Australia over the years.

“Plus, I always get a bit of comfort by seeing a stallion in the family, when I’m looking for stallions. It shows the pre-potency of the family.”

Another enticement was the cross that produced Vandeek - by a Galileo (Sadler’s Wells)-line stallion out of a Danehill-line mare in Mosa Mine, who packs a highly successful Australian flavour.

She’s by a son of Danehill in Exceed And Excel, Australia’s champion sire of 2013, an enduring shutter to Britain and Ireland over many seasons, and now a successful broodmare sire.

And Mosa Mine is now the producer of two stakes winners from six (all winning) runners. Gstaad - son of Australian shuttler Starspangledbanner (Choisir) - this year joined Vandeek as a black-type winner by taking the Coventry Stakes (Gr 2, 6f) at Royal Ascot, before Group 1 seconds in Deauville’s Prix Morny and Curragh’s National Stakes (Gr 1, 7f).

That cross was attractive to Arrowfield as it reversed that of The Autumn Sun, who’s by a Danehill sire (the aforementioned Redoute’s Choice) out of a Galileo mare. Again, The Autumn Sun hasn’t set the two-year-old world alight - his three elite winners have been Oaks and Derby horses - but you can’t deny quality.

And so Arrowfield moved to buy that stake in Vandeek that would hopefully help them secure him as a shuttler.

And they missed.

Fortunately, an old friend hit.

“The farm that won the tender was Cheveley Park, and one of our favourite people runs it in Chris Richardson, an old friend from way back,” Messara said.

An approach would be made to have Vandeek shuttle. But before that, Messara’s right-hand man, Arrowfield’s bloodstock manager Jon Freyer, was dispatched to Newmarket.

“We’d seen videos and photos of course, but there’s no substitute for having an in-person look,” Messara said.

“I have a lot of faith in Chris as a judge, but when you’re going to stick your neck out and recommend a stallion to clients, and when we’re going to send 30 or 40 of your own mares to a stallion, you have to do your due diligence.

“We heavily support our stallions. We don’t ask others to support them if we don’t support them.

“Jon had a look and said to me: ‘You’re gonna love him. He’s good looking, well-balanced, is a lovely horse with a deep grey colour, and has athleticism beyond doubt’.”

Negotiations unfolded and Vandeek arrived in Australia on July 17, armed with a ballistic fertility rate from his first season in Britain exceeding 90 per cent.

One aspect of Vandeek’s pedigree catching the eye is that he carries double Danehill, at 5f x 3m. Through the top line, he’s the damsire of Havana Grey’s grandsire Teofilo (Galileo), while, as mentioned, he’s the sire of Mosa Mine’s father, Exceed And Excel.

This is interesting since merely doubling Danehill can be a tricky business, and so many Australian broodmares have the great stallion somewhere in their pedigree, meaning triplications will likely ensue. (At one point a few years ago, a study found 55 per cent of all Australian thoroughbreds carried Danehill).

But at least Vandeek has statistically the best way of doubling Danehill - gender-balanced, with two sons being the worst. Mercifully, three sons won’t be happening in matings with Vandeek.

Furthermore, Danehill’s influence, and potential pitfalls of repetition, are these days being diluted as we all grow older and he recedes deeper into pedigrees - in Vandeek’s sireline’s case, into the fifth remove.

“That’s a fair way back, so it shouldn’t be an issue,” Messara said. “Plus some of the best mares in Australia are daughters of Danehill-line stallions.”

All told, Messara said, Vandeek “ticked all the boxes for us”.

“I think he’s a horse who suits our local conditions,” he said. “If I didn’t think that, I wouldn’t have chased him.

“He’s good looking, sound looking, a very classy-looking individual. He’s athletic and was an early goer.

“And at his price he’s great value, and the market has franked that now. He’s filled up completely, with 150 mares.”

Messara says definitively that’s “the maximum we’re going to take”, before pausing for a moment and adding: “Oh, I might get down on bended knee and see if they’ll give me another ten.”

Maiden Of The Week

Shangri La Boy (AUS)

Shangri La Boy (Pierro), a half-brother to Group 2 winner-turned-stallion Storm Boy (Justify), registered an all-the-way win in the TAB Maiden Plate (1400m) at Rosehill on Wednesday.

The three-year-old made amends for his defeat as favourite on debut at Canterbury last month, scoring by 2.2 lengths over Nordic Viking (So You Think) with race favourite Providence (Wootton Bassett) a further 0.9 lengths back in third.

Winning jockey Adam Hyeronimus, who partnered Storm Boy to three of his five career wins, said Shangri La Boy was a talent in his own right.

“He was a very beautiful horse, Storm Boy. It's hard to find horses that look like him,” Hyeronimus said.

“But he's [Shangri La Boy] got his own good attributes, this horse. He is [by] Pierro, which might need blinkers in time. But what he's doing at the moment is very nice and I like the way he handles himself.

“He's so casual, so relaxed, nothing ever bothers him and I'm sure he will build off the back of today's win.”

Adrian Bott, who trains the colt in partnership with Gai Waterhouse, said he had been a work in progress, requiring five barrier trials before racing, but was beginning to put it all together.
