Camilleri set for a double shot at Group 1 glory

Chicken king John Camilleri is a multi-millionaire accustomed to equine success, having bred a handy one named Winx (Street Cry) at one point, but he’s hoping to win two Group 1s as a battling underdog against a pair of raging favourites on Saturday.

At Caulfield, Camilleri will take on exciting $1.80 chance Apocalyptic (Extreme Choice) with a filly he bred in Britain in Chateau Eze (Frankel) in the Thousand Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m).

And at Randwick, Camilleri’s Fairway Thoroughbreds’ slot will deploy Lady Shenandoah (Snitzel) in The Everest (Gr 1, 1200m), as she and 11 others seek to somehow overcome Hong Kong star Ka Ying Rising (Shamexpress), who’s drifted to as much as $1.75 for the world’s richest turf race.

Third-starter Chateau Eze is on the sixth line of betting at $15, and Lady Shenandoah on the fifth at $13.

At the risk of stating the obvious, Camilleri says Apocalyptic, winner of her past three from four capped by the Flight Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m), and the 14-from-16 Ka Ying Rising will be “incredibly hard to beat”.

What's On

But, much like many an owner who came up against Winx, Camilleri will be out to enjoy the occasion, and won’t abandon the notion that anything can happen in a horse race.

“I feel absolutely fine on both fronts, because it’s a privilege to have a runner in these big races,” Camilleri told ANZ News.

“So I’ve got no problem whatsoever. You can’t run and hide and avoid these good horses, and it’s just great to be a part of it.”

With his triple Group 1 winner Sunshine In Paris (Invader) having been retired injured in August and covered by Wootton Bassett (Iffraaj) soon before his death at Coolmore Stud, Camilleri will be hoping Chateau Eze can fill the void.

She’s the product of a breeding project in which Camilleri sent four mares to Frankel (Galileo) in Britain, to each bring back a foal while carrying another. In what many breeders would see as a bonanza, Camilleri reports that project has produced an overwhelming majority of fillies.

“You’re always happy with fillies, because you’ve got some residual value there,” he said, “but as long as they come out the right way, you’re happy either way.”

Chateau Eze’s dam is the unraced Antibes (Lonhro). She’s an eight-year-old daughter of the Fairway-bred A Time For Julia (Redoute’s Choice) - a dual stakes winner who Camilleri sent to Japan to create Listed winning filly As Time Goes By (Deep Impact).

“Antibes was with Anthony and Sam Freedman and she showed a little ability, but she had some stifle issues so we retired her,” Camilleri said of Antibes, who’s second southern-timed visit to Frankel - standing at Juddmonte Stud for £350,000 ($A716,000) has now yielded a yearling colt.

“I liked the mating, and secondly, you don’t get many opportunities to go to a world class stallion. They’re often not available.”

The mating has given Chateau Eze a duplication of Danehill (Danzig) in the most optimal gender-balanced manner, at 3f x 4m via Frankel’s dam Kind and Antibes’ damsire Redoute’s Choice. Mr. Prospector (Raise A Native) is at 5m x 5m, 5m through Miswaki, Straight Strike and Jade Hunter.

Born on August 6, Chateau Eze was sent by Camilleri to Mark Walker at his Cranbourne base, as one of a minority of horses the New Zealander trains outside of the Te Akau operation.

“Te Akau have been good supporters of mine at the sales, and I have a very high regard for Mark as a trainer,” Camilleri said.

After two trials, Chateau Eze had her turn at odds-on when she debuted with an easy win in a 1212-metre Benalla three-year-old fillies’ maiden on September 2.

Stepped up to black type in Caulfield’s Jim Moloney Stakes (Listed, 1400m), she made good ground for a 0.75-length second at $9 behind Yum (Ghaiyyath). Bookmakers now have Yum longer than Chateau Eze for the Thousand Guineas, at $26.

“She’s only had two starts for a win and a second at stakes level, so her performance to date has been exceptional,” Camilleri said of Chateau Eze. “Mark and [assistant trainer] Ben Gleeson are very happy with her, so hopefully she runs well.

“It’s a Group 1, it’s going to be a hard race - they’re all hard to win. But Michael Freedman’s filly, Apocalyptic, seems an absolute stand-out. No doubt she’s the one to beat. She’s probably got an edge over the Melbourne fillies.”

Among the other three mares Camilleri sent to Frankel was the Fairway-bred Group 3-winner Fireworks (Snitzel), dam of stakes victor Millane (Zoustar). Fireworks was in fact covered by the great stallion three times, producing the Michael Freedman-trained Magenta Skies - a Newcastle maiden winner last month before running seventh in the Flight Stakes - plus two-year-old filly Beachside and a yearling colt.

Camilleri was left looking for a runner for Fairway’s Everest slot after the retirement of Sunshine In Paris, who ran a fine 1.54-length fifth in last year’s edition. He negotiated an superb replacement in the Chris Waller-trained, Hermitage Thoroughbreds-owned Lady Shenandoah.

The four-year-old mare was a star of last season, going unbeaten in five starts including three Group 1s in the Flight Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m), the Surround Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) and the Coolmore Classic (Gr 1, 1500m). She still missed the Australian Champion 3YO Filly title, but only due to the presence of another triple Group 1 winner of the last season, Treasurethe Moment (Alabama Express).

Switched to shorter trips in this Everest campaign, Lady Shenandoah has blotted her copybook somewhat - similar to, but not as dramatically as, Treasurethe Moment.

Lady Shenandoah resumed with a 0.1-length second as a $2.60 favourite to Headwall (Dream Ahead) in Randwick’s Concorde Stakes (Gr 3, 1000m), but would have won had jockey James McDonald found clear running earlier.

The mare was then sent out a $2.35 favourite in Moonee Valley’s Manikato Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) but managed only fourth, 2.7 lengths off winner Charm Stone (I Am Invincible). McDonald had more excuses, however, with the mare trapped wide and back from gate ten and buffeted about in a roughly run race, before making decent ground in the short straight.

“It was a forget run,” Camilleri said. “She drew badly, it was a messy race, she got bumped, nothing went right for her. It was always going to be sticky from that wide gate. You wouldn’t think she’d find that much trouble but she did, and she ran a gallant fourth.

“In my mind I’ve put a line through it, and I have a feeling she’ll really show her true colours on Saturday.”

But with the world’s highest rated sprinter in the field, will Lady Shenandoah and the other 11 be running for second place?

“Obviously Ka Ying Rising will be very hard to beat,” Camilleri said.

“But Lady Shenandoah’s a chance. I wouldn’t have submitted to Chris Waller and Hermitage if I didn’t think she had a chance. Thankfully they looked upon our submission favourably. I’m more than happy to have her as our slot runner.”

Ciaron Maher’s TAB slot runner Jimmystar (Per Incanto) was second-favourite for the Everest on Monday at $7, ahead of $8 shot Joliestar (Zoustar) in Waller’s own slot, and $9 chance Briasa (Smart Missile) for the slot of Max Whitby, Steve McCann, Col Madden and Neil Werrett.

Morning Briefing

Australia

Hayes happy with Ka Ying Rising ahead of The Everest

David Hayes has put to rest any fears over the health of his star sprinter Ka Ying Rising (Shamepxress) as the Hong Kong superstar took in his final piece of work leading into Saturday's The Everest (Gr 1, 1200m) at Randwick. The four-time Group 1 winner, and highest rated sprinter in the world, produced a strong gallop at Canterbury on Monday and Hayes was on hand afterwards to set the record straight about his stable flagbearer. "I got a call yesterday at lunchtime from JD, my son, and [SEN host] Gareth Hall had rung him and said his Twitter account had been hacked and sent out some false information and basically had him scratched, lame behind and not eating," Hayes said. "That's not the horse I've been training anyway. The phone went into meltdown for probably six hours, but to use a Donald Trump-ism, it was fake news. We're really happy with him. He just went out on the beautiful Canterbury track this morning and ran home in 38 [seconds] under a nice hold. His recovery was excellent and I think he's really improved from that trial. The idea of the trial was to bring him on and I think it has and we're very happy with him. I think he's ready to rumble."

Yulong locks in Mazu for The Everest

Yulong have announced that they will again partner up with Triple Crown Syndications for The Everest, with Mazu (Maurice) set to represent their slot in Saturday's $20 million showpiece. Yulong also joined forces with the syndication back in 2018 for Redzel's (Snitzel) second Everest victory. The seven-year-old Mazu is no stranger to The Everest having raced in the Sydney spectacle twice previously, with his best effort a third-placed finish behind Giga Kick (Scissor Kick) in the 2022 edition. The move to secure Mazu has been made following last week's news that Yulong's original runner, Private Harry (Harry Angel), was to be spelled following an injury. “Obviously, it’s disappointing that injury forced Private Harry’s withdrawal from the Yulong slot, but to secure a seasoned sprinter like Mazu is a huge bonus, particularly at this late stage,” said Yulong COO Sam Fairgray. “Mr Zhang has already tasted success in The Everest previously with Triple Crown Syndications thanks to Redzel’s phenomenal run in 2018, and it’s extremely exciting to be partnering with the team again for another tilt.” Mazu joins the Yulong-owned Angel Capital (Harry Angel) and Magic Time (Hellbent) at Randwick this Saturday, who will run in the slots of James Harron Bloodstock and Inglis respectively. “There aren’t many who can say they have three genuine chances in the world’s richest turf race,” Fairgray added. “We’re in a very fortunate position this year and looking forward to watching how it plays out on Saturday.”

War Machine faces vet inspection

Racing NSW have advised that The Everest hopeful War Machine (Harry Angel) will be inspected upon his arrival in Sydney. A final examination of all runners will be conducted by Racing NSW veterinary officers on Friday morning, while all declared runners that are currently in Sydney have been the subject of official veterinary scrutiny with no significant issues of concern identified. Flemington-based War Machine has won his last four starts, including in the Stradbroke Handicap (Gr 1, 1400m) and Gilgai Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m).

Maher sweats on Caulfield Cup make-up

Champion trainer Ciaron Maher could be left sweating on whether two of his potential four Caulfield Cup (Gr 1, 2400m) hopefuls make the final field, with Royal Supremacy (Make Believe) and Zardozi (Kingman) both currently sitting in the emergency slots. Royal Supremacy was a last-start winner of The Metropolitan (Gr 1, 2400m) on October 4 and was elevated to 19th in the order of entry following the news that Changingoftheguard (Galileo) would not run in this Saturday’s Caulfield showpiece. "I thought he would just win the Newcastle Cup, but it turns out the form from that is very good, and it all lined up in the Metrop," Maher said, with Royal Supremacy having run second in the Newcastle Gold Cup (Gr 3, 2300m) prior to his Metropolitan success. "He's improving all the time. He grabs the bit and with each run he races better. He was quite strong on the line [in The Metropolitan]." Berkshire Breeze (Mastercraftsman), who sits two places below Royal Supremacy, is the other Maher runner not guaranteed a slot. Meanwhile, Zardozi, who finished fourth in last year's Caulfield Cup, is is a certain runner and has produced a fifth placing in the So You Think Stakes (1500m), seventh placing in the Underwood Stakes (Gr 1, 1800m) and an 11th in the Turnbull Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m) so far this campaign. "Her first run was good and you'd say her next two have been under [par]," Maher said. "Last week I expected more. I didn't think she could win, but I expected more. I might just try some head gear on her, possibly. [In] a mile-and-a-half handicap, we'll roll the dice with her. She used to pull and tug a bit, but she seems different now, so maybe the shades might be the key that she needs." Maher will also have Middle Earth (Roaring Lion) in the cup, who gets out to 2400 metres for the first time in Australia. "He won't be far away as a mile-and-a-half is certainly a lot different to those 2000-metre races he's been running in," Maher said.

Back-up unlikely for Buckaroo

With trainers such as Ciaron Maher sweating on whether some of their runners will gain a spot in Saturday's Caulfield Cup, prominent owner Ozzie Kheir has revealed that Buckaroo (Fastnet Rock) is unlikely to make a quick back-up in this weekend's Group 1. The Chris Waller-trained seven-year-old gelding finished third in last Saturday's four-runner Might And Power Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m), a run that left his owner disappointed. “I thought he was disappointing, myself,” Kheir told Racing.com. “But when you dive into it, you can make excuses. We’ve got a decision to make. My view would be the back-up wouldn’t suit him, on that track. He just didn’t enjoy that firm track at all. I was very, very confident, as you should be going into those races. After the race, my lip was down. I was probably a bit sooky, Saturday and even Sunday.”

Lake Forest ready to go in King Charles III Stakes

Last year's Golden Eagle (1500m) victor Lake Forest (No Nay Never) will make his return to Australian racing on Saturday when he lines up in Randwick's King Charles III Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m). The William Haggas-trained five-year-old came from the very rear of the field to land the Golden Eagle under Cieren Fallon and Haggas’ stable representative Issy Paul feels a similar winning attempt from down the run is likely this weekend. “We know he’s never going to jump well, and he’s never going to chase them early, so a good tempo will suit him,’’ she told Racing NSW. “He can sometimes do it to himself, he’s a little bit lazy and takes a while and when he does get rolling he’s really fast. If he can do what he did in the Golden Eagle and pick them off late that’s ideal for him.” Having begun the season a little slowly, Lake Forest has sprung back into life with two second-placed runs in the Lennox Stakes (Gr 2, 7f) at Goodwood and City Of York Stakes (Gr 1, 7f) at York on his last two outings. “He’s run some really nice races, I thought he was pretty unlucky in the City Of York,’’ Paul said. “He had a freshen-up before the Lennox and that seemed to really help him. He’s in really good order, he’s an easy horse to travel because he’s so laid back. Sometimes I think he can be too laid back in his races which is what can get him beaten.”

Expensive Wootton Bassett colt wins trial

The Chris Waller-trained Defenseman, a $1.4 million colt by the late Coolmore shuttler Wootton Bassett (Iffraaj), produced an eye-catching trial display at Rosehill on Monday when scoring by a length and a half in his 900-metre heat. Ridden by James McDonald, the two-year-old defeated Short Sea (Ole Kirk) with a further 0.2 lengths back to Keystrike (Profiteer) in third. Defensemen was purchased by Coolmore's Tom Magnier out of Yarraman Park at this year's Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale - where he was the most expensive yearling by his sire at the sale. He is a half-brother to Silver Slipper (Gr 2, 1100m) placegetter Direct (Siyouni) being out of the imported American mare Upfront (War Front), herself a half-sister to Group 2 winner Aspray (Quality Road) being out of the Group 2-winning Galileo (Sadler’s Wells) mare Up.

Nepotism Cox Plate call imminent

Co-trainer Wayne Hawkes has revealed that a decision on whether Nepotism (Brutal) will contest the Cox Plate (Gr 1, 2040m) is to be made imminently following the colt's seventh-placed finish in last weekend’s Caulfield Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m). “Do we run in the Cox Plate, do we run in the AAMI Vase, do we go to the Spring Champion or do we go to the paddock? Every one of those, in theory, is alive,” Hakes, who trains in partnership with his brothers Michael and John, told Racing.com. “At the end of the day, you’ve got to make the right decision. It’s not an easy decision.” Questioned on how Nepotism has come through his Guineas run, Hawkes said: “Straight away, you look and see how the horse pulls up, then the next morning, Sunday morning, you see how bright they are, how much [food] they left. He left a double handful of feed Saturday night. Then, you see how he is this morning [Monday], he licked the bottom of the [feed] bin this morning, which is always a good sign. Now, that you’ve ticked those boxes… if he had left four or five dippers [of feed], well, there’s your answer. He ran the fastest [final] 800 [metres], the fastest 600 and the fastest 400 of the race and he’s still trying to get out. I know everyone will say Observer was the [unlucky] one, but he [Nepotism] was the best horse in the race and he just had no luck.”

Well-bred Chains Of Love impresses at Scone

Having run second on debut at Scone last month, the Paul Messara and Leah Gavranich-trained Chains Of Love (I Am Invincible) went one place better back at the track on Monday as she took out a 1200-metre contest. Ridden by Andrew Adkins, the three-year-old I Am Invincible (Invincible Spirit) filly proved a cut above her 11 rivals as she defeated Speed Of Gold (Per Incanto) by 2.7 lengths with a further 0.3 lengths back to Bawnaglen (Headwater) in third. Retained to race by her breeders, John Messara, John Leaver and Alan Jones, Chains of Love is a full-sister to stakes scorer Waltz On By and a half-sister to the Group 2-placed winner Duvana (Dundeel). She is the fifth winner from five foals to race out of the Thousand Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) winner Stay With Me (Street Cry), who is in turn the best of seven winners to come out of Champion 2YO and 3YO Filly Miss Finland (Redoute’s Choice).

New Zealand

Berge on the board in New Zealand

Corentin Berge (Credit: Race Images)

French jockey Corentin Berge had to wait longer than anticipated to partner Sicillian (Magna Grecia) at the races, but he made that opportunity count at Arawa Park on Sunday, earning his first win on New Zealand soil. Berge arrived in New Zealand last month and had five raceday rides prior to the Arawa Park Hotel Rotorua (1400m), a take two aboard the Wexford-trained mare having been scheduled to ride her at Matamata last Saturday before the late abandonment. He retained the ride for the following weekend and had confidence that she could produce a winning result, and so it proved as the mare defeated Sneak Peek (Almanzor) by 1.3 lengths. “I thought she could be my first winner so it’s really nice to get that done," Berge said. "I didn’t have any clear instructions, her trainers [Lance O’Sullivan and Andrew Scott] gave me a free card, but she probably started a bit slower than I expected. In saying that, we didn’t end up too far from the leader and it all worked out well.” Originally from Toulouse, Berge rode 86 winners in his homeland before seeking further opportunities in Germany where he added another six wins to his tally, including success at Listed and Group 2 level. Now plying his trade in Matamata, Berge is working for Te Akau Racing, having been in contact through a French association with Cambridge Stud. “There wasn’t a real connection between France and New Zealand, but I was lucky because a French trainer, Nicholas Clement, trained for Cambridge Stud a few years ago so he got in contact with them, which led me to Te Akau," he said. “Te Akau have given me a few trial rides over the last few weeks and are really open to giving me the opportunity to ride for other stables in the mornings, so I try to ride for Wexford, Pam Gerard and Graham Richardson as well.”

JPN: Off Trail doubles Graded tally

Godolphin homebred Off Trail (4 c Farhh - Rose Trail by Kingmambo) added a second career Graded win to his CV when narrowly scoring in Monday’s Sho Swan Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m) at Kyoto. Ridden by Akira Sugawara for trainer Keiji Yoshimura, the four-year-old entire defeated Wide Latour (California Chrome) by a neck with a further half-length back to Lance Of Chaos (Silver State) in third. Monday’s Grade 2 victory added to Off Trail’s win in the 2024 Nikkei Sho (Gr 3, 1800m) at Fukushima.

24 for Blue Point

Darley’s former shuttler Blue Point (Shamardal) chalked up his 24th individual stakes winner when Love Words (3 f ex Victoria Regina by Mastercraftsman) landed Sunday’s Premio Elena & Sergio Cumani Stakes (Listed, 1600m) at Milan. The Endo Botti-trained filly defeated Sadora (Amaron) by a head, with a further three-quarters of a length back to Rhapsody in third. A half-sister to the Listed-placed winner Irish Lullaby (Nathaniel) and winner Toora Loora (Nathaniel), Love Words is out of the Mastercraftsman (Danehill Dancer) mare Victoria Regina, who also landed the Premio Elena & Sergio Cumani Stakes when it held Group 3 status. Blue Point has not returned to Darley’s Northwood Park for the 2025 breeding season, and stood the 2025 northern hemisphere breeding season at Kildangan Stud for a fee of €100,000 (approx. AU$177,700).

11 for Profitable

Rogue Enforcer (4 h ex Skip To My Lou by Foxwedge) became the 11th individual stakes winner for Profitable (Invincible Spirit) when he took out Sunday’s Premio Omenoni (Listed, 1000m) at Milan. The Laura Vanska-trained four-year-old ran out a length and a quarter winner over Free Nation (Siyouni), with a further three-quarters of a length back to the third-placed Opulent Restraint (Dubawi). Rogue Enforcer is the only winning foal from five out of the winning Foxwedge (Fastnet Rock) mare Skip To My Lou.

US: Time To Dazzle takes the Franklin Stakes

The Mark Casse-trained Time to Dazzle (4 f Not This Time - Staria by Unbridled’s Song) doubled her stakes tally on Sunday when she landed the Franklin Stakes (Gr 2, 5.5f) at Keeneland. Ridden by Jose Ortiz, the four-year-old filly defeated In Our Time (Not This Time) by three and a quarter lengths with a further head back to Pondering (Hard Spun) in third.

UK: Shadow Of Light to join Darley’s roster for 2026

Shadow Of Light (Lope De Vega), the champion two-year-old of last year and just the third horse to complete the Middle Park Stakes (Gr 1, 6f) and Dewhurst Stakes (Gr 1, 7f) double since the Pattern began, has been retired from racing and will stand at Darley's Kildangan Stud next year. Godolphin's homebred son of Lope De Vega (Shamardal) won four of his five starts at two, including a brace of Group 1 wins in the Middle Park and Dewhurst for Charlie Appleby. Shadow Of Light returned at three to finish a length-third in the English 2,000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1m) behind stablemate Ruling Court (Justify), while he was also a half-length fourth in the Prix Jean Prat (Gr 1, 1400m). Shadow Of Light is also in possession of a top-class pedigree, with four European Group 1-winning juveniles under his first two dams. He is out of the Group 1-placed winner New Approach (Galileo) mare Winters Moon and therefore a three-parts brother to Prix Morny (Gr 1, 1200m) and Middle Park scorer Earthlight (Shamardal). Another sibling, the Too Darn Hot (Dubawi)-sired Wild Desert was a neck second in the Summer Stakes (Gr 1, 8f) at Woodbine last month. Sam Bullard, Darley’s director of stallions said: "Shadow Of Light hails from an extraordinary family packed with precocious Group 1 performers and his own record at two is simply outstanding. We are very excited to show him to breeders in the coming weeks."

Challenge of the suffixes

ANZ News

Wet weather again impacted New Zealand racing this past weekend. Yet more spring rain caused the northern meeting, at Otaki, to be postponed until later in the week. However, down south, in mid-Canterbury, Ashburton presented a great surface (rated a Good 4) and for once clods of earth were not being showered into the air during the running of races.

Evidence of the welcome conditions was found in the winning time of 1.22.71 for the feature, the Barneswood Farms Stakes (Gr 3, 1400m).

A traditional lead up for the next month’s Group 3YO Classics, the New Zealand Two Thousand (Gr 1, 3200m) and One Thousand Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m), the 2025 Barneswood went to Te Akau Racing’s Cool Aza Rene (Cool Aza Beel), one of three runners for the stable. Pre-race, pundits were skeptical that Cool Aza Rene would see out the 1400 metres as all four of her previous wins were at 1000 metres or less. Consequently, she started as fifth favourite with her stablemates rated as better chances.

Third approaching the home straight, Cool Aza Rene was beautifully poised to challenge but upon straightening her rider, Bruno Queiroz, elected to dive through along the inner. There was a gap but it soon closed forcing the rider to tug on the right rein. They emerged from the pocket, found a lane three off the fence and levelled up to the leaders. Nothing was going better at the 100 metres and she was never going to relinquish the lead despite a late run from Alottago (Tagaloa). There was not much between the next four to the line.

Cool Aza Rene’s eight starts have yielded five wins and the daughter of Diamond Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) winner, Australian-based Cool Aza Beel (Savabeel), has banked $171,100, a more than healthy return on the A$55,000 Te Akau’s David Ellis outlayed for her out of Book 2 at the 2024 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale.

She is her sire’s second stakes winner and the sole winner from her unraced dam, Irene (Xtravagant), herself a half-sister to Melbourne Group 3-placed Mintha (Redoute’s Choice). Her granddam Hades (Encosta De Lago) won in Sydney while her great granddam Hasna (Snippets) was the top Australian 2YO filly of her year, landing six wins as a juvenile and seven in total. Those victories included the second and third legs of the Triple Crown, namely the AJC Sires’ Produces Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) and the Champagne Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m). She also ran third in the Golden Slipper Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m), that year won by Polar Success (Success Express).

An intriguing question is: Which son of Champion Sire Savabeel (Zabeel) will continue the Sir Tristram (Sir Ivor) line? At this point, Embellish (Savabeel) has sired four stakes winners. Embellish’s oldest crop are now five whereas Cool Aza Beel went to stud two years later and is also represented by this past winter’s Brisbane star Cool Archie, a $1.6 million earner who claimed the JJ Atkins Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m), the last of his five successive wins.

Although Cool Aza Rene carries the AUS suffix, her sire and her maternal grandsire, Xtravagant (Pentire), are both New Zealand bred and both are domiciled at Newhaven Park in New South Wales.

A slightly alarming statistic to emerge from the Barneswood Stakes is that the first five home were all sired in Australia. Four of the five were foaled in Australia. Third-placed Miss Ziggy (Brazen Beau) was foaled in New Zealand.

This trend is apparent in the upcoming NZB Ready To Run Sale where 114 sires are represented, 72 of which stand in Australia. Of the 480 lots catalogued, 162 (34 per cent) were foaled in Australia. The shrinking New Zealand foal crop is a reality.

Not new

Years and years of inferior stakes money (compared to the riches on offer in Australia) had to have an effect on the local breeding industry. In a double-edged sword, breeders have relied heavily on Australian buyers for their livelihood. This is nothing new. It began nearly 100 years ago, the Australians plucking the plums of the National Yearling Sale.

It is one thing to snare the good colts but the industry cannot survive without breeding stock. Buying the best bred fillies as yearlings is a given. Added to that, the best performed race fillies and race mares also find their way across the Tasman, further weakening the pool. Local owners, trainers and bloodstock agents need to eat too and the tempting offers cannot be ignored.

It is only a snapshot but this past weekend’s Australian Group 1 results provide further proof of the one-way traffic of New Zealand breeding stock.

Autumn Boy (Credit: Racing Photos)

Caulfield Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) winner, Autumn Boy (The Autumn Sun), is from New Zealand-bred Rosegarden (Savabeel), a passed in lot at the 2018 NZB Karaka Yearling Sales (Book 1). Rosegarden, bred by Beltana Stud’s Richard Rutherford never made it to the races. At stud she produced Merchant Navy foals in 2020 and 2021 prior to Autumn Boy. She has since visited Hellbent (I Am Invincible) twice for a colt in 2023 and a filly this spring.

Rosegarden’s dam is the Group 3 and three-times Listed winner O’Reilly Rose (O’Reilly) who ranks as a three-quarter blood sister to Newmarket Handicap (Gr 1, 1200m) victor Shamexpress (O’Reilly), now standing at Windsor Park Stud and who is currently basking in the limelight as the sire of the world’s top sprinter and favourite for this week’s Everest (Gr 1, 1200m), Ka Ying Rising.

Toorak Handicap (Gr 1, 1600) winner Transatlantic (Snitzel) is a son of New Zealand bred Gust Of Wind (Darci Brahma), a graduate of the 2013 NZB Premier Yearling Sale. Gust Of Wind’s premier performance was her Australian Oaks (Gr 1, 2400m) in which she took the lead long before they straightened then had the audacity to run clear of the great Winx (Street Cry). Winx won her next 33 starts.

Gust Of Wind’s produce record started patchily, foaling to Snitzel twice in her first four years at stud, Transatlantic, the second of those in 2020. In 2021 she foaled a winning I Am Invincible (Invincible Spirit) filly named Sensational Wind, so is three from three on the winners. Her colt by Stay Inside (Extreme Choice) came along in 2023 and a Dundeel (High Chaparral) filly followed in 2024. A more appropriate name for Transatlantic might have been Transtasman.

Bubble burster

The third Group 1 of the weekend fell to New Zealand-bred Globe (Charm Spirit), the big boy who burst the bubble of Treasurethe Moment (Alabama Express) in Saturday’s Might and Power Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m). Considering there were just four runners, there was much anticipation simply due to the size of the field and Blake Shinn used all his cunning to get the win.

Globe (Credit: Racing Photos)

Globe was expected to lead but his chasers did not expect the pace to drop past the 1000 metres. That was the genius of Shinn who gave his charge a brief rest until the 600 metres where he pushed the button, catching his opponents flat-footed as they rounded into the straight. For a stride or two Treasurethe Moment appeared ready to challenge but Globe shot clear, was full of running and simply too strong.

The seven-year-old Globe took his record to six wins in only 15 starts. He is a graduate of Book 2 of the 2020 NZB Karaka Yearling Sale. Buyers had two opportunities to buy him as he first appeared as a weanling in Cambria Park’s 2019 NZB May weanling sale draft but was passed in. The following January he fetched $22,000 and as a three-year-old landed a trial by more than six lengths before his sale to Australia.

Unbeaten in his first four starts, Globe then experienced minor cardiac arrhythmia. A couple of good spells saw him return to winning form in the Cranbourne Cup (Listed, 1600m) last November. Two seconds and a fourth in open handicaps were his lead ups into Saturday’s upset in which he doubled his previous earnings to $1.2 million. One placing was at Moonee Valley, good experience for what’s next, a possible tilt at the Cox Plate (Gr 1, 2040m) on October 25 should connections decide to front up with the late fee. Hasn’t the Cox Plate picture changed in just a few weeks?

He is from the third crop of Charm Spirit (Invincible Spirit) who shuttled to Windsor Park Stud for six seasons before breeders lost interest. The stallion is now domiciled in France but since his last visit to the southern hemisphere he sired dual Group 1 sprinter Shaquille. However, even that has not made much difference as his stud fee is a modest €4,000.

Apart from Charm Spirit, Globe really is an all-New Zealand product because his first three dams are all by New Zealand-bred sires. First dam Bonnie Doon is a daughter of $3.6 million yearling Don Eduardo (Zabeel). His granddam is by the top class racehorse and sire Grosvenor (Sir Tristram) while his great granddam is by another top class runner and leading sire Vice Regal (Bismark II).

The dam of three winners, Bonnie Doon ranks as a sister to Zabeel Classic (Gr 1, 2000m) and Thorndon Mile (Gr 1, 1600m) winner Booming (Don Eduardo) while his great granddam Syrian Sea (Vice Regal) was a Trentham Group 3 winner.

Bonnie Doon’s sixth foal, a colt by Ace High (High Chaparral) is Lot 248 among the draft of Barry Donoghue’s BMD Bloodstock at next month’s NZB Ready To Run Sale.

Honesty rewarded

Sunday’s Rotorua meeting featured the Sweynesse Stakes (Gr 3, 1215m), from which proved that honesty is often rewarded, fittingly in this case to Twain (Per Incanto) whose record is a model of consistency. In 13 starts Twain has recorded seven wins, two seconds, two thirds and two fourths.

Twain (Credit: NZB)

Settling sixth, one out, Twain was right behind the leaders rounding into the home straight but took a while to accelerate. From the 200 metres he launched and although he didn’t level up until the 50m he was doing better than anything in the race and the neck advantage at the line did not indicate the ease of his win.

From day one, when he bolted clear on debut at Tauranga in July 2024, we knew that Twain had a future, and so it has proved. Wins at Te Rapa, again at Tauranga and at Ellerslie followed. A five month spell saw him return for two more wins at Te Aroha and Te Rapa where at start four this campaign he started favourite for the Foxbridge Plate (Gr 2, 1200m) resulting in a game fourth. The $80,500 first prize of the Sweynesse Stakes took his earnings to $247,970 and brought to 35 the number of individual stakes winners by Little Avondale Stud’s Per Incanto (Street Cry).

Twain was offered at the 2022 NZB Ready To Run Sale but failed to reach his $200,000 reserve. His dam, Railway Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) winner Fleur De Lune (Stravinsky), won six times and was five times Group 1 placed so she had plenty of ability, which has been passed on to Twain, one of her two winners.
