John McArdle is hoping his star filly My Gladiola (I Am Invincible) can upstage the boys when she lines up as the sole filly in Saturday’s Coolmore Stud Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) at Flemington.

The striking grey will be out to join an illustrious honour roll of fillies to have conquered the ‘stallion-maker’ in recent years, including electric sprinter September Run (Exceed And Excel), Godolphin superstar In Secret (I Am Invincible) and Tony McEvoy’s champion mare Sunlight (Zoustar), and McArdle believes she’s on the right path to add her name to that list.

What's On

My Gladiola burst onto the scene in January with an eye-catching debut victory in the Blue Diamond Preview (F) (Gr 3, 1000m) at Sandown, a performance that immediately marked her as one to watch. She went on to finish eighth in the Blue Diamond Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) – the only time in her six-start career she has finished outside the top two – before returning this spring with a bang.

She resumed with victory in the Cap D’Antibes Stakes (Listed, 1100m) and was narrowly beaten in the Danehill Stakes (Gr 2, 1100m) by one of Saturday’s opponents, McGaw (I Am Immortal), last time out.

It's a $2 million Group 1 [the Coolmore], so it'd be the biggest assignment she's had so far

John McArdle

McArdle is confident she can make her presence felt again as she steps up to the elite level for just the second time.

“She ran in the Blue Diamond where the race probably didn't pan out as we wanted it to, and she was probably coming to the end of it,” McArdle told ANZ News.

“It's a $2 million Group 1 [the Coolmore], so it'd be the biggest assignment she's had so far.

“In the Danehill, the race probably didn't pan out exactly as we wanted it to either. She got a bit of a bump at the start and she ended up probably without cover for a bit longer than what we wanted to, but probably the part that I most liked about the race was that Jamie [Mott] had to produce her earlier than what we'd wanted to and what we had done previously, and she sustained the gallop the whole way, so I was really happy with her.

“Obviously Tentyris will improve fitness-wise and will be in a better part of the track and Legacy Bound and horses like that, but it's always good to have beaten some of your key rivals.”

The Coolmore has been the plan from the outset for My Gladiola, with the filly’s entire spring campaign built around gaining experience down the Flemington straight.

“The Coolmore has been the plan the whole way along. We aimed at the Cap D'Antibes and the Danehill to give her as much experience down the straight as we possibly could, and she won one of those and got beaten in a lip in the other one. So I am confident that she's happy down the straight,” McArdle said.

Since the Danehill, it has been business as usual for the filly, who tuned up with a sharp Caulfield jump-out win and a strong track gallop on Tuesday morning.

“She went to Caulfield and had a good, strong trial. She did it on the bit, but she ran a very fast time,” the trainer added.

“She had a nice hit-out over 1000 metres Tuesday morning and she seems to be in good order.”

Come 3:40pm on Saturday, My Gladiola will have to overcome barrier one under regular partner Jamie Mott, a draw that left McArdle less than thrilled.

“It’s terrible,” he said with a laugh. “When we were racing around the corner, we managed to draw pretty much the outside gate all the time, and racing down the straight in the Cap D'Antibes we drew 20, but it put us on the right side of the track. Last start she was second from the outside, which, again, didn't phase us too much. But barrier one, it's up to her and Jamie now as to where she heads to.

“Obviously, we would have preferred to draw wider and closer to the speed horses, so we could have gotten on their backs nice and easily, but that's up to Jamie now and having spoken to him yesterday, after the barrier draw, he was confident to be able to find the right place. So that's for them to work out.

“Jamie is our stable rider and he rides the majority of our horses and he's ridden her since she was a two-year-old in track work in jump-outs and stuff like that, so they know each other very well.”

Victory on Saturday would not only add My Gladiola to the history books but confirm her value as one of the elite broodmare prospects of her generation.

By leading sire I Am Invincible (Invincible Spirit), she is out of Villa Verde (Not A Single Doubt), who finished fourth behind champion sire Zoustar (Northern Meteor) in the 2013 renewal of the Coolmore.

McArdle’s Redgum Racing purchased the filly for $550,000 from breeders Kia Ora Stud at the Inglis Easter Yearling Sale last year.

I Am Invincible (Credit: Yarraman Park)

“She'll be a very valuable broodmare when we sell her now. They do love two-year-old speed and she's a Group winner and Group-placed as a two-year-old. She's run in Group races all her career and has run worse than second once in her life. So she's already a valuable broodmare, but if she was to win a classic race like the Coolmore, then she'd be a very, very valuable mare,” McArdle said.

Not only would the win be significant for the filly and her ownership group, it would also bring McArdle’s first Group 1 success in 20 years, since Hollow Bullet (Tayasu Tsuyoshi) captured the Arrowfield Stud Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m) in 2005.

“It'd be good. I’ve trained a Group winner every year I’ve had my licence. And I’ve placed in a couple more Group 1s, but to win another one, that'd be great,” he said.

Oaks-bound filly headline act in Inglis Digital November Sale

Morisu Ojo (Credit: Inglis)

A stake in VRC Oaks (Gr 1, 2500m)-bound filly Morisu Ojo (Maurice) is among the headline offerings for the Inglis Digital November (Early) Online Sale, which is now open for bidding.

The Ciaron Maher-trained daughter of Maurice (Screen Hero) announced herself with a brilliant maiden win in September before a bold sixth against the colts and geldings in the Super Impose Stakes (Listed, 1800m) at Flemington, finishing only 1.7 lengths behind winner Options (Impending), a $12 chance in Saturday’s Victoria Derby (Gr 1, 2500m).

She then made strong late ground in the Ethereal Stakes (Gr 3, 2000m) last start and is rated a $15 prospect for Thursday’s $1 million VRC Oaks which comes just 24 hours after the sale concludes.

“This is new ground for Inglis Digital and very exciting,” said Inglis Digital business manager Nick Melmeth.

“We’ve offered shares in a Melbourne Cup runner before, but never an Oaks contender in this fashion. Ciaron Maher has a strong opinion of Morisu Ojo, so to have the opportunity to buy in literally a day before she runs in the VRC Oaks is an incredible scenario.”

Morisu Ojo features among a diverse catalogue featuring 302 lots, including 173 racehorses (76 fillies), 61 racehorse shares, 31 broodmares, 27 yearlings, five two-year-olds and five unraced horses.

Other notable racehorse share listings include Farnan (Not A Single Doubt) colts Farcited – a Black Opal Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) runner-up and Golden Slipper (Gr 1, 1200m) runner – and Farnicle, who was a Group 2-placed juvenile and finished second at his most recent start in the $500,000 Tapp-Craig (1400m).

Also on offer are five per cent shares in the Group 1-placed Strait Acer (Headwater) and stakes winner Statuario (D’Argento).

Lindsay Park chase maiden Coolmore win

The Lindsay Park training trio of Ben, Will and JD Hayes will look to emulate a slice of family history on Victoria Derby Day, with Tycoon Star (Written Tycoon) set to fly the flag in the Coolmore Stud Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) at Flemington. While their father David Hayes famously trained six winners on Derby Day in 1989, including two Group 1s, the next generation is chasing a trophy that has so far eluded the stable since the Coolmore was elevated to Group 1 status in 2006. Ben Hayes said the Coolmore had been the long-range target for Tycoon Star since the start of his spring campaign. “It’s been the race we’ve wanted to end up at,” Hayes said. “From his past couple of starts, punters have probably gone from him being a chance to thinking he’s not good enough, but he’s better than that. He trialled really well last week and should appreciate a bit more give in the track.” The Maribyrnong Plate (Gr 3, 1000m) winner and Blue Diamond (Gr 1, 1200m) placegetter has been a model of consistency in elite company this prep, finishing fifth most recently behind McGaw (I Am Immortal), My Gladiola (I Am Invincible), Tentyris (Street Boss) and Legacy Bound (Ole Kirk) – all Coolmore rivals again. With four weeks between runs and the adoption of visors, the Lindsay Park team is confident the colt can produce his best. “We always wanted to go a month into the race with a trial, and that’s exactly what we’ve done,” Hayes said. “He’s a straight-course winner, and I’ve seen plenty win at big odds down the straight – he could certainly surprise.”

Ryan launches two at Victoria Derby

Nick Ryan heads to Flemington on Saturday with two live Victoria Derby (Gr 1, 2500m) contenders in the shape of Miewa (Maurice) and Highvol (Microphone). “For a small stable, it’s a great effort by the team,” Ryan said. “We went out a few years ago to find young horses that could stay, and this year we’ve got two in form and genuine chances.” Miewa has taken the traditional path through the Super Impose Stakes (Listed, 1800m) and Caulfield Classic (Gr 3, 2000m), finishing runner-up in both. “He’s had the perfect prep,” Ryan said. “He gets back and runs on, so from barrier eight if he can settle a touch closer, that’ll help. You’ve got to get the first half right in a Derby.” Stablemate Highvol’s campaign has been less conventional. The Anzac Day Stakes (Listed, 1400m) winner was once earmarked as a Caulfield Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) horse before a strong effort in the Geelong Classic (Listed, 2200m) convinced Ryan to stretch him out. “He ran well [when fourth] in the Stutt Stakes and then did a great job stepping up in trip at Geelong,” Ryan said. “He’s come through it super and can improve again.” Ryan concedes Miewa’s pedigree leans more toward staying, while Highvol might find the 2500 metres a test, but both head to the race thriving. “They’re both well, both eating up and bright,” he said. “Miewa has the class and the breeding, but Highvol wouldn’t shock me either.”

Busy day for Walker at Flemington

Kiwi-based trainer Mark Walker will also launch a two-pronged assault on Saturday’s Victoria Derby at Flemington, with Azazel (Shocking) and McWoody (Alabama Express) set to fly the Te Akau Racing flag. A dominant last-start winner of the Geelong Classic, Azazel has thrived since his victory and looks ideally suited to the step up in trip. “He’s pulled up really well. He’s a very fit horse and everything’s gone to plan,” Walker told SEN. “If any horse will get the 2500 metres, it’s him – both on pedigree and the way he races. I’ve got no doubts he’ll stay.” The gelding is rated a $23 chance, while McWoody sits at $61 following his encouraging fifth in the Caulfield Classic. Walker acknowledged the challenge posed by Observer (Ghaiyyath), who heads the Derby market. “Obviously, that Godolphin horse will be awfully hard to beat – he was very impressive the other day, that’s for sure,” he said. Te Akau will also feature in the Empire Rose Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m), where Damask Rose (Savabeel) seeks her first Group 1 victory. The mare endured a luckless run in the Toorak Handicap (Gr 1, 1600m) but reunites with Blake Shinn, who guided her to success in the Karaka Millions 3YO Classic (RL, 1600m) and NZB Kiwi (Listed, 1500m) earlier this year. “Everywhere we went in the Toorak, we had no luck,” Walker said. “Blake’s got a great record on her and plenty of confidence. From barrier nine, she shouldn’t get locked away.” With Pride Of Jenni (Pride Of Dubai) expected to ensure a solid tempo, Walker believes the race shape will play to Damask Rose’s strengths. “I think it’ll be run at a genuine tempo, and Blake’s in great form – he’ll have it worked out,” he said.

Allen confident in longshots ahead of Cup week

Jockey John Allen is hoping to keep his winning momentum rolling into Flemington’s Cup week, confident his outsiders Strictly Business (Grunt) and Arcora (Justify) can outperform their odds in Saturday’s Wakeful Stakes (Gr 2, 2000m) and Victoria Derby respectively. Fresh off a four-win haul at Swan Hill on Tuesday, Allen will partner Strictly Business ($21) in the Wakeful for Ballarat trainers Thomas and Monique Carberry. The filly steps sharply in class after breaking her maiden last week, but Allen believes the timing is right. “It’s a big step-up in class and trip quite quickly, but it’s probably the right year to be doing it,” he told Racing.com. “It doesn’t look the strongest crop of three-year-olds, so it’s nice to have a crack. She’s definitely got ability – if she handles the occasion and does everything right, she’ll run well.” Allen will also reunite with Arcora ($61) in the Victoria Derby, having guided the Justify (Scat Daddy) colt to victory at Flemington in July’s Byerley Handicap (1800m). The Irishman felt the colt was unlucky in the Geelong Classic, where he finished close-up behind Azazel. “I’m a bit surprised at his odds – I don’t think he’s had much luck this prep,” Allen said. “I wouldn’t be surprised if he ran a good race over the Derby trip.”

Zahra primed for powerhouse Derby Day book

Mark Zahra heads into the opening day of the Melbourne Cup Carnival with arguably the strongest book of rides of his career, boasting leading chances across all three Group 1 features at Flemington. The in-form jockey partners Observer in the Victoria Derby, Tentyris in the Coolmore Stud Stakes, and Leica Lucy (Derryn) in the Empire Rose Stakes – all prominent in early markets. “I’ve got three good chances in the Group 1s,” Zahra said. “I’d be happy with one and even happier with anything above that.” Zahra also takes the reins on Getta Good Feeling (So You Think), the short-priced favourite in the Wakeful Stakes, and Vinrock (I Am Invincible), the second elect in the Carbine Club Stakes (Gr 3, 1600m). Sitting atop the Melbourne Jockeys’ Premiership, Zahra said the ride he’s most anticipating is Godolphin colt Tentyris, who he believes is peaking perfectly for the Coolmore. “He seems to be coming good at the right time,” Zahra said. “It’s a massive race, especially for these colts and especially for Godolphin. You have to ride him cold, and the punters will have their hearts in their mouth – but you watch his turn of foot late.” Zahra was fined $1500 for easing down late on Observer at Moonee Valley last week, but the jockey said it was all part of the plan. “He’s not a massive horse and didn’t need a gut-buster. I wanted to save something for Saturday,” Zahra said.

Forgotten Feroce ready to soar in Eagle

Trainer Dom Sutton believes Feroce (Super Seth) can silence his doubters in Saturday’s $10 million Golden Eagle (1500m) at Randwick, where the emerging horseman will chase his biggest payday yet. Barely two years into his training career, Sutton already boasts an Australian Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) title with Feroce and said the gelding has been aimed at the Golden Eagle since his three-year-old campaign ended in March. “It’s been the plan since he ran sixth in the Australian Cup,” Sutton said. “We thought the Golden Eagle would really suit him.” After two encouraging Caulfield runs, Feroce was below par in the Toorak Handicap on October 11, but Sutton said the result came down to tactics. “We probably got it wrong from barrier eight,” he said. “He had to do too much early, ran the quickest sectionals from the gates and just didn’t get the cover he needs in high-pressure races. But we learned from it.” A sharp Flemington jump-out win on October 24 confirmed Feroce had regained his spark, and Sutton said he’s thriving ahead of the Sydney assignment. “He’s the forgotten horse at $61,” Sutton said. “He’s rock-hard fit, he’s worked the Sydney way a few times and his rider says he actually goes better that way. On his day, he’s a genuine Group 1 horse.” With regular jockey Billy Egan suspended, Josh Parr takes the ride, a switch Sutton welcomes. “Josh knows the Sydney horses and how the races are run up there,” he said. “He’s patient and tactically smart, the right fit for Feroce.”

Go Racing chasing Golden riches at Randwick

New Zealand syndicator Go Racing will have a strong hand at Randwick on Saturday, with their navy and white silks set to contest two feature races. Leading the charge is the Chris Waller-trained Lord Penman (Contributer), who lines up in the $10 million Golden Eagle under Joao Moreira. Formerly trained in New Zealand by Stephen Marsh, the gelding impressed early with four wins and two seconds from seven starts, his only miss coming in the $3.5 million NZB Kiwi at Ellerslie. Since joining Waller’s Sydney stable, he’s been a model of consistency, including a last-start second in the $1 million Silver Eagle (1300m) to fellow Kiwi-bred Linebacker (Super Seth). Go Racing general manager Matt Allnutt said the team remains grounded after Lord Penman drew barrier 16, though the presence of Moreira offers a boost. “We’re realistic with our expectations,” Allnutt said. “Barrier 16 certainly makes it tough, but having Joao on is a big positive. He’s had great success for Bruce Marsh in Singapore, and we’re hoping he can weave some of that magic again.” Adding further significance, ten per cent of Lord Penman’s Golden Eagle prize-money will be donated to The Sony Foundation Australia. Go Racing will also be represented by Queensland Derby (Gr 1, 2400m) winner Maison Louis (Super Seth) in the Rosehill Gold Cup (Gr 3, 2000m). The John O’Shea and Tom Charlton-trained four-year-old impressed last start when finishing third behind Lindermann (Lonhro) and Attrition (Churchill) in the Hill Stakes (Gr 2, 1900m) and is a $4.20 second favourite for Saturday. “He’s trained on beautifully and drawn ideally in barrier two,” Allnutt said. “If the breaks come, he’ll be right in the finish.”

Rothfire ready for Russell Balding

Trainer Robert Heathcote says evergreen sprinter Rothfire (Rothesay) is thriving ahead of Saturday’s $3 million Russell Balding Stakes (1300m) at Randwick, declaring the eight-year-old looks “better than ever.” Fresh from his Sydney Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) win on Everest day, Rothfire has spent the past fortnight enjoying a mix of paddock time and light training in Victoria. “He looks fantastic –- better than he did two weeks ago,” Heathcote said. “He had three days at Lindsay Park in Euroa running around a paddock, then went down to Flemington where John Bunting, a master farrier, looked after his feet. He doesn’t have the best hooves, so that’s been important.” Despite facing a hot field that includes six Everest runners, headed by favourite Jimmysstar (Per Incanto), Heathcote believes Rothfire ($23) can hold his own. “He’s run second in two Stradbrokes at 1400 metres,” he said. “He’ll be up on the speed, if Jason [Collett] can get a bit of cover and time it right, he’ll be strong late.” Heathcote remains in awe of his stable star’s longevity after overcoming career-threatening injuries. “I’m unbelievably proud of him. What he’s achieved, given what he went through as a three-year-old, is quite extraordinary.” The Queensland trainer could enjoy a big interstate double, with Abounding (Rich Enuff) set to contest the Empire Rose Stakes at Flemington. “Drawing the inside [barrier one] will help her get the mile,” Heathcote said. “Jamie [Melham] can be conservative, maybe three pairs back on the paint. She’s in super form – I didn’t even come down planning to run in the Empire Rose, and now she’s on the third line of betting.”

Melody Belle’s first foal scores at Cranbourne

The first foal out of Te Akau Racing’s dual Horse of the Year and Hall of Fame inductee Melody Belle (Commands), Lyrics ‘N’ Song (Written Tycoon), easily won the $45,000 Challenge Plate 3YO (1200m) at Cranbourne on Friday. Ridden by Kiwi jockey Michael Dee, Lyrics ‘N’ Song began well from barrier six to sit second, went forward to level turning for home, and raced away to score by 2.3 lengths over Hi Val (Frosted), improving on a debut second on October 3. “She took benefit from the first run, fitness wise, and she faced lesser company here tonight,” Dee said. “She’s always brilliant from the gates, travelled lovely, and she won with plenty in hand. She is still green, but she’ll get there eventually.” Melody Belle was mated with Yulong’s nine-time champion sire Written Tycoon (Iglesia), with Lyrics ‘N’ Song the resultant foal. “It’s terrific to get that win tonight for Mr Zhang and the Yu Long team,” said trainer Mark Walker. “Obviously, Melody Belle meant a lot to the stable and to be entrusted with training her first foal is a great honour. She’s definitely inherited some of mum’s ability and it was a really emphatic win. It was very satisfying and I think a lot of the Te Akau team, over the years, that had anything to do with Melody Belle will be really proud of the result.”

Antino set for spell

Trainer Tony Gollan has confirmed that Antino’s (Redwood) spring campaign has come to an end following his below-par performance in last Saturday’s Cox Plate (Gr 1, 2040m). The Queensland star finished almost eight lengths behind winner Via Sistina (Fastnet Rock) and Gollan revealed on X that the gelding has since undergone a full suite of X-rays and veterinary checks, with no abnormalities detected. The six-year-old enjoyed another consistent campaign leading into the Cox Plate, highlighted by his second-place finish in the Turnbull Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m) in early October.

Mott cautious but proud as Parchment Party flies US flag

Hall of Fame trainer Bill Mott admits he remains unsure how Parchment Party (Constitution) will handle Flemington’s turf surface when he becomes the first American-trained runner to contest the Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) on Tuesday. “We’d feel good if the race was on dirt,” Mott told FanDuel TV. “But it’s run on the turf, and while he’s moved well on the grass in his work, he’s never won on it. He’s a true stayer – it’s just a matter of how he gets along with the surface.” The five-year-old’s unlikely journey began when June’s Belmont Gold Cup (Gr 2, 16f) at Saratoga was switched from turf to dirt due to heavy rain – a condition of his entry. Parchment Party duly romped home by 8.5 lengths to secure a ‘win and you’re in’ golden ticket to Melbourne. He quarantined in Newmarket before flying to Australia, adapting impressively to unfamiliar conditions. “We had to change our training approach from ovals to uphill gallops at Newmarket but he’s taken it well,” Mott said. “He looks good, seems happy, and we’ve maintained a good level of fitness.” Mott cannot travel to Melbourne but has been following his horse’s progress remotely and remains proud to see the US represented on racing’s biggest staying stage. However, the forecast of rain before Tuesday is a concern.
“That won’t be in our favour,” Mott said. “We’d prefer the turf to be real firm, something that emulates dirt, but we’ll roll with the punches.” Parchment Party will be ridden by fellow Hall of Famer John Velazquez, who will also make history as the first American jockey to ride in the Melbourne Cup.

Trapeze Artist filly shines at Warwick Farm juvenile trials

Zunesha pictured as a yearling (Credit: Magic Millions)

The Matthew Smith-trained Zunesha (Trapeze Artist) impressed in Friday’s Warwick Farm juvenile heats, producing the quickest time of the morning among four two-year-old trials over 818 metres.

The filly jumped cleanly from an outside gate, mustered speed to sit outside the leader and drew clear to win by 1.2 lengths over Promenade (Pinatubo), with Farcolo (Farnan) the same margin further back in third.

A $300,000 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale purchase from Widden Stud, Zunesha is the first foal out of winning Zoustar (Northern Meteor) mare Zou Island, herself a half-sister to the stakes winner So You Win (So You Think) from the family of US dual Group 1 winner Habibti (Tabasco Cat).

The Michael Freedman-trained runner-up Promenade was a standout on pedigree, being a half-sister to Group 1 stars Alizee (Sepoy) and Astern (Medaglia D'Oro), as well as sire Tassort (Brazen Beau).

The Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott stable struck in the next heat with Tassort filly Palmanova, who carried the Yulong colours. A $350,000 Magic Millions buy, she led throughout for a comfortable 0.1-length win over Mystical (Exceed And Excel).

Annabel and Ron Archibald’s Wild Ruler (Snitzel) colt Threesome also broke through, showing improved tractability to take a 0.2-length victory over Elio (Ole Kirk) at his second trial. A $50,000 Inglis Classic Yearling Sale purchase for Pure Bred Thoroughbreds, he is out of US stakes winner Triple Chelsea (Hat Trick).

Rounding out the juvenile heats, the Ciaron Maher-trained Artemex (Exceed And Excel) charged home from last to score by 0.3 lengths over Bold Bucks (Capitalist). Bought by Dynamic Syndications and Dean Watt Bloodstock for $120,000 at Magic Millions Gold Coast, he is out of Lonhro (Octagonal) mare Artemis Rose, from the family that produced Golden Slipper (Gr 1, 1200m) winner Forensics (Flying Spur).

Douglas upbeat as Giga Kick eyes third Group 1

Trainer Clayton Douglas said Giga Kick (Scissor Kick) is right where he needs to be ahead of next week’s Champions Sprint (Gr 1, 1200m) at Flemington. The Mornington-based horseman was full of praise for his stable star after the six-year-old finished third in a 1000-metre trial at Caulfield on Thursday. “I couldn’t be happier with him,” Douglas told Racing.com. “It’s nine days out from the Champions Sprint and we’re in really good shape. He’s come through his first-up run in really good order and this morning was just a bit of a tick-over trial.” The 2022 Everest (Gr 1, 1200m) and 2023 Doomben 10,000 (Gr 1, 1200m) winner returned to the track in style earlier this month, producing a barnstorming performance to take out the Schillaci Stakes (Gr 2, 1100m) – his first win in more than two years. “This has been a really good approach into the Champions Sprint,” Douglas said. “He’s definitely fitter, he’s moving really well and he’s improved off his first-up run. It’s pretty exciting to think, given what he did first-up, what he might deliver in nine days’ time.”

MRC announces two appointments

The Melbourne Racing Club (MRC) has announced two major leadership appointments, naming Jonathan Munz as vice chairman and confirming Tanya Fullarton as chief executive officer (CEO). Fullarton steps into the permanent role after four months as acting CEO, following the departure of Tom Reilly. Munz, a prominent owner, breeder and businessman, was endorsed by the MRC committee on Thursday to fill a casual vacancy. MRC chairman Cameron Fisher praised both appointments. He highlighted Fullarton’s stewardship of a successful Caulfield Cup Carnival, which saw sell-out crowds and strong corporate demand. “Tanya has done an exceptional job leading the club through one of its most successful Caulfield Cup Carnivals in years,” Fisher said. Fullarton brings more than 30 years’ experience in the racing industry, including senior and board positions across multiple organisations. She said her focus will be on growing membership, elevating race-day experiences and ensuring the MRC continues to innovate. Munz, founder and former executive chairman of Reliance Worldwide Corporation, now heads GSA Capital, a global investment company. “Having someone of Jonathan’s calibre join the committee is a tremendous benefit for the club,” Fisher said. A long-time Thoroughbred Racehorse Owners Association chairman and major owner-breeder, Munz praised the MRC’s recent direction and reaffirmed his commitment to the club’s progress. “The club has a strong platform for growth and I’m looking forward to helping ensure its continued success and contribution to the wider industry,” Munz said.

Yulong buys into unbeaten Well Written

Yulong has purchased a 50 per cent share in outstanding New Zealand filly Well Written (Written Tycoon), who will remain under the care of Cambridge trainer Stephen Marsh for the rest of her racing career. The deal follows the filly’s explosive win in the Soliloquy Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m), which came on the back of a runaway maiden victory. Marsh confirmed all original owners had retained their interest, with the transaction facilitated by his stable’s bloodstock agent Dylan Johnson. “All the original owners have stayed in, it’s been an easy transition and if she’s as good as what we think, she’ll campaign in Australia as a four-year-old,” Marsh said. “It’s great for our stable and for New Zealand racing to see Yulong substantially investing in our industry.” Well Written is the $2.60 favourite for next month’s New Zealand 1,000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) at Riccarton and continues to please her trainer. “She breezed through her last run and galloped beautifully with Matt Cartwright in the saddle on Tuesday morning,” Marsh said. “The 1,000 Guineas and The NZB Kiwi have massive appeal to Yulong – it’s very exciting to have them in the stable.” Marsh will also start Little Black Dress (Snitzel) in the Guineas following placings in the Soliloquy Stakes and Sunline Vase (Gr 3, 1400m).

Mynott eyes more success with strong Tauranga team

Cambridge trainer Sam Mynott will look to continue her stable’s winning form when she saddles a strong team at Tauranga on Saturday. The in-form horsewoman was buoyed by Cirque Du Rose’s (Circus Maximus) breakthrough win at Pukekohe on Wednesday, where the mare claimed the Entain/NZB Insurance Pearl Series (1600m) under a well-timed Joe Doyle ride. “Joe gave her a beautiful ride and it was nice to see her get that win over a mile,” Mynott said. “We always knew she would want that sort of trip. She’s only going to improve.” Attention now turns to Too Darn Hot (Dubawi) filly Too Darn Sweet, who tackles her first stakes race in the rescheduled James and Annie Sarten Memorial (Gr 2, 1400m). She caught the eye when finishing runner-up on debut at Taupo earlier this month. “She’s a really smart little filly,” Mynott said. “It’s a big step-up in class and a big ask for just her second start, but she’s improved off her debut and she’s happy.” Electron (Turn Me Loose) resumes over 1300 metres, having missed Te Rapa’s abandoned meeting earlier in the week. The mare instead trialled at Pukekohe on Wednesday to stay up to the mark, and while originally bound for the TAB Mile (Gr 3, 1600m) at Riccarton, Mynott said those plans have been shelved due to missed work.

Te Akau duo out to turn luck around ahead of 2,000 Guineas

Almost nothing has gone to plan this spring for Te Akau Racing’s He Who Dares (Snitzel) and Hostility (I Am Invincible), but trainers Mark Walker and Sam Bergerson are hoping their fortunes shift ahead of next month’s New Zealand 2,000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) at Riccarton. When He Who Dares lines up in Saturday’s rescheduled James and Annie Sarten Memorial at Tauranga, it will mark 56 days since his last start; a strong-finishing second in the Sir Colin Meads Trophy (Listed, 1200m) at Ellerslie on September 6. “It’s been a frustrating spring to say the least,” Bergerson said. “It’s nearly two months since he raced with all the wet weather and abandonments, but he’s in good order and his work has been great. Hopefully he gets reasonable footing on Saturday and we can then head to Christchurch for the Guineas.” Stablemate Hostility, the $1.65 million Ready to Run Sale record-breaker, has endured even more misfortune. The colt was desperately unlucky at Taupo when carried off the track as a $1.30 favourite, and subsequent attempts to give him a Guineas lead-up run have been thwarted by abandonments and cancelled flights. “We’re definitely due a bit of luck,” Bergerson said. “He’s still stuck up north after two cancelled flights. He’s on the ballot for Tauranga and nominated for Ellerslie on Tuesday – hopefully one of those options comes through.”

Queen Of Kings wins Ashburton thriller

The step up from Rating 65 to open company proved to be no obstacle on Friday for Queen Of Kings (Prince Of Brooklyn), who snatched a thrilling photo-finish victory over the mile. The five-year-old mare went into Friday’s contest with only one previous win to her name in her 34-start career, but had run strong placings in three of her four previous starts to give trainers Leonard and Lacy Stewart the confidence to raise the bar at Ashburton. Ridden by Gosen Jogoo, Queen Of Kings settled well back and had only a couple of rivals behind her as she straightened for home, but Jogoo angled her into clear air down the outside of the track to launch her run. Queen Of Kings ran on strongly out wide, joining up with Sacred Dream (Sacred Falls), Iffididit (Iffraaj), Quintabelle (Embellish) and Harlech (Darci Brahma) in a five-way battle to the finish. Less than a length separated that quintet at the line, with a last-minute lunge by Queen Of Kings carrying her to a 0.1 lengths victory over Sacred Dream. Iffididit was the same distance further back in third. “That was a good win today,” Leonard Stewart said. “The horse has been racing consistently and running good races despite not quite winning. It was a step up in class today, but she handled it well. I’m really happy for ‘Gos’ too, who’s been a bit crook lately but gave the horse a great ride today. We’ll see how she comes through this before deciding what we do next. I thought a Good 4 track might be a bit too firm today, but that ground had a bit of give in it and she handled it well.”

HK: Eustace targets Valley breakthrough as Romantic Warrior sharpens for Cup

Trainer David Eustace will turn to promising sprinter Colourful King (Blue Point) as he looks to revive his stable’s fortunes when Hong Kong racing makes a rare weekend stop at Happy Valley on Sunday. Eustace has endured a luckless start to the 2025/26 season, with just one win from 15 meetings following an impressive debut term that yielded 36 victories. His best chance to rebound comes in the Class 2 Guangzhou Handicap (1200m), where Colourful King backs up just ten days after a brave second placing. “I’d have loved a bit more time between runs, but he’s pulled up great,” Eustace said. “We wouldn’t be going if we weren’t happy with him.” The gelding has won four of 12 career starts, including two in Hong Kong, though all his victories have come over 1000 metres. Eustace believes the extra distance could now play to his advantage. “He’s not a winner over 1200 metres at all, but I think the step up in trip will suit,” he said. “With him and a couple of others in the race, there’ll be a strong tempo, and that’ll help Colourful King.” The four-year-old renews his rivalry with Mark Newnham’s Youthful Spirits (Shamus Award), the pair having fought out the quinella three times – with Colourful King leading the head-to-head by two to one. “He ran great from the back last start, and the winner put in an excellent performance,” Eustace said. “I couldn’t be happier with him, really.” Meanwhile, champion Romantic Warrior (Acclamation) continued his preparation for a record fourth Hong Kong Cup (Gr 1, 2000m) with a smooth 1200-metre barrier trial win at Sha Tin on Friday. Regular partner Hugh Bowman reported the ten-time Group 1 winner was thriving ahead of his planned return in the Jockey Club Cup (Gr 2, 2000m) on November 23.

59 for Starspangledbanner

Spicy Marg (2 f ex Main Desire by High Chaparral) became the 59th individual stakes winner for Coolmore’s long-time regular shuttle stallion Starspangledbanner (Choisir) when taking out Friday’s Bosra Sham Fillies’ Stakes (Listed, 6f) at Newmarket. Ridden by Hector Crouch for trainer Michael Bell, the juvenile filly scored by two lengths over Azleet (Tasleet) with a further length and three-quarters back to Splish Splash (Wootton Bassett) in third. Bred by Branton Court Stud, Spicy Marg was purchased by Nick Bell for 50,000gns during Book 2 of the 2024 Tattersalls October Yearling Sale and races in the colours of Elb Bloodstock. A half-sister to winners Radiant Beauty (Churchill) and Urban Decay (Frankel), she is out of the Listed-winning High Chaparral (Sadler’s Wells) mare Main Desire and from the family of Grade 1 winner Easy Goer (Alydar). Starspangledbanner has not returned to Coolmore Australia for 2025, and stood the 2025 northern hemisphere breeding season at Coolmore Stud for a fee of €45,000 (approx. AU$79,290).

UK: Australians spend 3,369,000gns at Tattersalls

As has become the custom over the last few years, Australians made their presence felt at the Tattersalls Autumn Horses in Training Sale in Newmarket. Over four days of trade, Australians spent 3,369,000gns (approx. AU$7,098,390) on 22 lots, with 360,000gns (approx. AU$758,510) given by Archibald Racing and Blandford Bloodstock for Coolmore-consigned Classic-placed colt Stay True (Galileo), the most expensive of the horses destined for Australia. McKeever Bloodstock and Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott were responsible for shelling out the most, spending 780,000gns (approx. AU$1,643,440) on three lots. The sale concluded on Friday.
