The second and final session of NZB’s Ready To Run Sale propelled the auction to another record-breaking conclusion, with the aggregate soaring past $41 million and both the average ($156,255) and median ($100,000) reaching all-time highs.

The results underscored the sale’s continued growth as one of the world’s most successful two-year-old auctions.

What's On

“It’s quite remarkable, another record-breaking sale,” NZB’s bloodstock sales manager Kane Jones said. “The whole team have put in a massive shift, not just over the last few days, but months out, and even years building relationships for this sale. I’m very proud of the entire team.

“It’s just a magical number hitting that $41 million in turnover, but the average is up, median is up as well which indicates that the middle market was particularly strong.

“This sale has gone from strength-to-strength in the last five years. The horses breezed phenomenally, and the type of horses that are brought to this sale improves year on year.

“It’s just a credit to the vendors who continue to support this sale and make it what it is.”

Hong Kong buyer Yeung Kin-Man emerged to once again finish leading buyer, the second half of the catalogue inspiring 82.8 per cent of his $3.57 million total spend across 16 lots, the lion’s share going on the sales-topping $825,000 son of Australia’s champion sire Zoustar (Northern Meteor).

Sam Beaton’s Riversley Park finished as leading vendor for the eighth consecutive year, selling 33 of its 39 lots for $6,525,000, the highlight being the Satono Aladdin (Deep Impact) colt who sold for $675,000 to Sanxiong Gao.

Of the 353 lots offered, 265 were sold to produce a strong clearance rate of 75 per cent, in line with recent years.

Consigned by Kit Brooks’ KB Bloodstock as Lot 374, the sale-topping Zoustar is the fourth foal out of stakes-winning Hussonet (Mr Prospector) mare Hijack Hussy, from the family of Hong Kong Sprint (Gr 1, 1200m) winner Inspiration (Flying Spur), Australian Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) winner Wandjina (Snitzel) and fellow Group 1 scorers Masked Party (Marscay) and Festal (Vain).

“Mr Yeung was looking for another Zoustar. This one looks big and strong and is an early type, so it’s likely we will bring him to Hong Kong earlier,” bloodstock agent Willie Leung said.

“Last year we bought more and we are already about to bring ten new horses to Hong Kong. He wanted to stock up a little bit more and then pick the quality ones to go to Hong Kong.”

Brooks said he couldn’t have been happier with how the $200,000 Inglis Easter Yearling Sale purchase presented throughout the preparation, and was pleasantly surprised by the figure he returned.

“He’s a beautiful-natured colt who was the stable favourite,” he told ANZ News. “Gee I wish we could find a few more like him. He was a pleasure to have around. He made our job real easy.

“He’s big and strong, perfect for Hong Kong, and he handled the preparation in his stride. I thought he'd make around $500,000, but I was a little surprised at the $825,000.”

Hong Kong-bound trainer James Cummings had said he might well spend more at the auction after forking out a combined $655,000 for two lots on Day 1 – including the fastest breezer of the sale (Lot 110) by Bivouac (Exceed And Excel) – and that proved the case when he went to $775,000 for the second top lot, a son of Written Tycoon (Iglesia).

Prepared by Prima Park on behalf of Yulong, Lot 371 is out of winning Poet’s Voice (Dubawi) mare Hersigh, the dam of SA Australasian Oaks (Gr 1, 2000m) placegetter and triple Group 3 winner My Whisper (Frankel), and was another one quick on the clock (10.36s) at the breeze-ups.

“The colt is physically strong and looks like he has the constitution to stand up to the pressure of Hong Kong racing,” Cummings told ANZ.

“He went about his work well and is the right type of candidate for what we have in mind. We are very happy to land him for our client and also very pleased to get one from a professional preparer such as Prima Park.

“He’s also from a great farm in Yulong and he is by a top sire, whose stock have won nearly 100 races in Hong Kong.”

Having added a new dimension to her operation through a partnership with one of Australia’s leading breeders, Prima Park manager Kelly Van Dyk was delighted to see the collaboration quickly bear fruit in the ring.

“The Written Tycoon colt is one of four that we prepared on behalf of Yulong,” Van Dyk told ANZ. “I have had an association with their racing manager Troy Stephens for a few years, and he approached me with the prospect of doing some business. It’s a wonderful opportunity.

“The colt himself has a flawless temperament and did a super breeze up. The fact that James Cummings and his father Anthony identified him is testament to us being on the right track.”

Prima Park sold nine of its ten lots on Wednesday for a combined $1.34 million, while Thursday saw the operation sell all nine of its remaining draft for a total $2.33 million, other highlights including an I Am Invincible (Invincible Spirit) filly who sold to Bjorn Baker and Jim Clarke for $360,000, while their Home Affairs (I Am Invincible) gelding went to Ryan Fownes for $330,000. Both horses were bought at Inglis Easter for $200,000.

“Today has been stronger than Day 1 but it's just the way the catalogue fell,” Van Dyk said. “The I Am Invincible filly and the Home Affairs gelding have been very good pinhooking results for us too.”

Little Avondale Stud’s Per Incanto (Street Cry) sired Wednesday’s $750,000 top lot and went close to replicating that figure when his Trelawney Stud-consigned colt (Lot 398) was knocked down to China’s Shijiazhuang Hongtao Horse Breeding for $700,000.

The colt is from the family of Group 1 winners Tivaci (High Chaparral) and Allez Wonder (Redoute’s Choice) and Trelawney Stud’s Cherry Taylor told ANZ that he should be ideally suited to Hong Kong racing.

“He has the best nature and the right sort of temperament for Hong Kong,” she said. “We hope he can win the Hong Kong Derby.

“He was in and out of the box a lot but never played up once. We would have been happy with $250,000, which was his reserve, but we like to let the market decide.”

Barry Donoghue enjoyed an excellent Day 1 and the money kept coming for his draft on Thursday, with Lot 283 by Hello Youmzain (Kodiac) proving his top lot when selling to China’s Mr Hongwei Chen for $700,000.

While his dam is a three-quarter sister to Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) and Victoria Derby (Gr 1, 2500m) winner Efficient (Zabeel), the $90,000 NZB National Yearling Sale buy clearly has some speed, breezing up in 10.57s, and Donoghue was full of praise for the youngster’s temperament and professionalism.

“Just an outstanding colt in every way,” he told ANZ. “Outstanding temperament, outstanding brain and bombproof. One of the nicest colts I have put my leg across.

“We had him on the market at $150,000 but were confident he would make north of $300,000. The $700,000 was a blowout.”

That big result earlier in the day was swiftly followed by another when Ohukia Lodge’s Lot 285 – a colt by first-season sire Armory (Galileo) – sold for $625,000 to agent Cameron Cooke and Cranbourne trainer Trent Busuttin.

The Mapperley Stud-based Armory – a son of Galileo (Sadler’s Wells) – sired his first winner from his first runner late last month, and his colt’s slick 10.52-second breeze backed up the attributes his buyers said made him one of the standouts of the sale.

“As an individual he was one of the picks of the sale,” Busuttin, who trains in partnership with Natalie Young, told ANZ.

“He was always going to be expensive but you’ve got to buy the ones you like. Cameron Cooke selected him, he’s a great judge, and lucky enough we’re going to get to train him.

“We loved him – Armory has obviously already had a winner and it’s good to buy off New Zealand farms and support New Zealand stallions. We’re very excited.”

Busuttin said the price was unexpected given Armory’s fledgling stud career, but he was nonetheless happy to go over budget for the colt.

“We didn’t expect that price but at the same time, for those horses that stand out and everyone sees them, he was a cracking horse so we knew we were going to pay plenty. We went over our budget a bit but hopefully he will repay us,” he said.

“We’ve put a lot into breeze-up sales. Hoping to get one or two more but it’s tough out there so we’ll see.”

Ohukia’s Jamie Beatson was thrilled with the result, confessing he would have been happy with half the selling price.

“He’s a cracking colt who hasn't put a foot wrong all preparation,” Beatson said. “We knew we had a lot of people interested but Rod [Schick] and I were undecided whether to set the reserve at $120,000 or $150,000, but we thought he could make $300,000. We were both very surprised but rapt.”

One of the biggest smiles on the complex was on the face of Simms Davison, the Mapperly Stud owner who stands Armory in conjunction with Windsor Park Stud.

"It is just fantastic exposure and publicity for the sire,” he told ANZ. “We had some bad news losing Contributer recently but this offsets some of that. Armory has made a very promising start, but this sale lets people know that there is both a commercial and racing component with the stallion."

Darley’s leading second-season sire Ghaiyyath (Dubawi) was represented by two lots across the two sessions and both made handsome returns when selling on Thursday.

The first to go through the ring was Lot 335, a gelding who breezed a strong 10.49s out of winning Nicconi (Bianconi) mare Final Choice, herself a half-sister to 2016 Debutant Stakes (Listed, 1000m) winner Wait For No One (Lonhro).

It was a first foray into the Ready To Run Sale for his consignors Landsdowne Park Stud, owned by Dave Duley and Jude Latimer, and they finished leading vendor by average, selling four lots for an average of $277,500.

A $70,000 Inglis Melbourne Premier yearling, their Ghaiyyath gelding realised $480,000 to the bid of Hong Kong buyer Ms B Yim. It was a second three-figure sum for the Cambridge operation after they sold a son of Blue Point (Shamardal) to Hong Kong on Day 1 for $375,000.

“A good result,” Duley told ANZ. “The Darley stallions have been good for us this week. The gelding is a lovely individual who’s been popular all week, so we thought he might make some good money but that’s really good money so we’re happy with that.”

Reflecting on the broader market trends as the session unfolded, Duley said trade appeared selective in places but highly competitive for the right horses.

“If the market’s on it, everyone’s on the same horse,” he said. “It seems to be going quite well.”

Lot 365: Ghaiyyath ex Hampton Classic colt (Credit: NZB)

Soon to follow was the Ghaiyyath colt out of Ohukia Lodge (Lot 365) who sold to Hong Kong trainer Mark Newnham for $420,000. The juvenile had Hong Kong appeal, being out of Exceed And Excel (Danehill) mare Hampton Classic, a sister to Al Quoz Sprint (Gr 1, 1000m) winner Amber Sky, a six-time winner in the jurisdiction.

Newnham, who put his hand up to secure three six-figure lots on Day 1, had earlier signed the docket for Lot 263, a gelding by Castelvecchio (Dundeel) out of unraced Exceed And Excel mare Cash First, herself a sister to the dam of three-time stakes winner She’s So High (I Am Invincible).

He was Gosford Park’s sole lot to go through the ring across both days and brought a smile to manager Richard Otto’s face when turning his initial $95,000 Inglis May Yearling Sale price tag into $325,000.

“I thought about buying him at the Inglis Sale and had a friend look at him but didn't pull the trigger,” Newnham told ANZ.

“I was keen to see him again. He’s furnished in the meantime and after a short prep has come on nicely. I expect he will furnish further. I think he will suit Hong Kong and I see him as a miler when he is three and four.”

Otto told ANZ: “I work closely with agent Paul Willetts and we’ve had some good successes in the past. Paul found him at the yearling sale earlier in the year. He has that classic look and we both like the High Chaparral influence in his pedigree. We had a couple of hiccups, but he emerged from them and handled the prep really well.”

Next on the New Zealand sales calendar is the much anticipated 100th National Yearling Sale, kicking off with the TAB Karaka Millions Raceday at Ellerslie on January 24, Book 1 at Karaka on January 25-26, Book 2 on January 27 and the Karaka Summer Sale on January 29.

Morning Briefing

Australia

Evaporate to tackle C F Orr

Last-start Golden Eagle (1500m) third Evaporate (Per Incanto) will be given a crack at Saturday's C F Orr Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) at Caulfield. The Ben, JD and Will Hayes-trained gelding will be taking on star sprinters such as Jimmysstar (Per Incanto) and Angel Capital (Harry Angel) in this weekend's $1 million contest, having impressed his trainers with his latest effort behind unbeaten mare Autumn Glow (The Autumn Sun). "That's the reason we've decided to run, he came back from Sydney and trotted up 100 per cent sound and looked a million dollars, so we had no hesitation at all," Ben Hayes said. "It's a small but very good field, but we've always had a high opinion of him." Evaporate will be dropping back to 1400 metres for the first time since finishing fifth in the P B Lawrence Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m) on August 16, and has barrier six in the seven-runner field. "I actually like it, I think the wide draw will work in his favour in the small field," Hayes said. "Being one of the last to load will help him. It's going to be a really tactical race. If he can jump well and, as long as he can get galloping room and get himself in a good rhythm, I think he'll be very competitive."

CORRECTION: Error in ANZ News on Thursday

In Thursday’s edition of ANZ, we reported that Yulong had purchased a recent Group 1 winner, which, as it turned out, was picked up from a fake press release circulating online. We are sorry for the mistake and any confusion it caused to our valued readers and clients. We will aim to be more vigilant in the future.

Waller readying Guineas assault

Chris Waller will send a pair of runners to Saturday's Sandown Guineas (Gr 2, 1600m) at Caulfield, with Godolphin runner Burma Star (Exceed And Excel) and Yulong's Written Tycoon (Iglesia) colt Pictor lining up in the $400,000 contest. Burma Star ran out a narrow winner of The Amanda Elliott (Listed, 1400m) last time out, while Pictor ran fourth in that contest, beaten 1.4 lengths by his stablemate. Waller has landed the Sandown Guineas once, with Pressday (Domesday) in 2010, but Godolphin owner Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum's record in the race includes wins from the likes of Caymans (Secret Savings), Kidnapped (Viscount), Tatra (Hussonet), Paximadia (Commands) and Morton's Fork (Ad Valorem). "His [Sheikh Mohammed] record is better than mine, so it's good to link up with him," Waller said. "I remember we won one once many years ago with a horse called Pressday, but that team's going great and it's good to be part of it." Waller said Burma Star had come out of his last-start Listed win in good order. "He's come through that well, he's a really neat horse with a great action and is very professional," Waller said. "He just goes to sleep in his races and likewise trackwork, so he looks after himself and turns up on raceday."

Barrier a challenge for My Gladiola

Mornington-based trainer John McArdle has admitted that a draw in barrier one for his filly My Gladiola (I Am Invincible) in Saturday's Thoroughbred Club Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) at Caulfield is less than ideal, but also revealed that he was delighted with the way the last-start Coolmore Stud Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) runner-up is ahead of the Group 3 contest. “I don’t think it is fit for publication,” McArdle told The Verdict podcast. “It’s not ideal. In saying that, I was standing at the jumpouts with Jamie Mott when the fields came out and he said ‘it’s ok, mate, I’ll get her out’. So, he’s confident, which is good. If she gets daylight and she can produce the turn of foot she has in her other starts, this prep, then the opposition are going to have to run to their best, I would have thought,” McArdle said. My Gladiola will head to the paddock following this weekend's run, before being set for a return in the Lightning Stakes (Gr 1, 1000m) at Flemington in February. “It looks like the right kick-off point for her,” McArdle said.

Dilmi and Lloyd to team up in Spring Stakes

Former Godolphin teammates Zac Lloyd and Nacim Dilmi are set to team up in Saturday's Spring Stakes (Gr 3, 1600m) at Newcastle with Probability Theory (Microphone). Dilmi took over from Sara Ryan as Domeland's private trainer this season having worked as the second in command for outgoing former Godolphin trainer James Cummings, and will bid for his maiden feature race outright with the dual-winning daughter of Microphone (Exceed And Excel). "I'm excited to team up with him [Nacim Dilmi] in a feature race," rider Lloyd, who served the latter part of his apprenticeship with Cummings and Dilmi, said. "He's a good friend of mine and he has improved this horse quite quickly. It has strung together two nice wins. I rode his first winner which was quite exciting so I'm looking forward to seeing what we can do on Saturday. She is stepping up drastically in grade but in saying that, the majority of the field are beside Grand Prairie. The horse will acquit herself well." Lloyd's full book of mounts on Saturday will also include a ride aboard Yorkshire (Snitzel) in The Hunter (1300m). "That is his target race, but when a horse doesn't really know how to lose like he does, he's definitely in with a good chance," Lloyd said.

‘D-day’ for Golden Mile in Hunter

Joe Pride is hoping to reignite the career of former star colt Golden Mile (Astern) when the now gelding lines up in Saturday’s The Hunter (1300m) at Newcastle. A Caulfield Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) winner at three, Golden Mile was retired to stud in 2024 but sustained an injury after covering just a handful of mares, leading to his gelding and return to racing earlier this year. He has since mixed his form, showing flashes of his old ability with a Group 1-placing behind Joliestar (Zoustar). Pride took over his training at the start of the current season and concedes he has been disappointed by the horse’s two unplaced runs so far, but remains optimistic the six-year-old can turn things around with added fitness and the application of blinkers. "He's a good horse. He has been to stud, he's come back, he's been gelded. He has had a pretty full life, and I hope that hasn't taken its toll on him because everything I've seen at home suggests it hasn't and I've got a racehorse right there ready to go," Pride said. "He's had two runs back now, he's a big gross boy – his stable name is Sumo, that's what he's built like – and Sumo has needed a couple of runs, as you can imagine. He's had them now so I'd like to think he can go on with it. Blinkers go on. I'm not going to say it's D-day, but it's close. He's got to show he's still got it there and I can't imagine he will have an excuse on Saturday." Jean Van Overmeire is booked to ride from barrier six.

Dylan Gibbons targets Beauford glory on home turf

For jockey Dylan Gibbons, Newcastle’s annual Saturday meeting is more than just a fixture on the racing calendar, it’s a return home. Born and raised in Newcastle, Gibbons began his apprenticeship under leading local trainer Kris Lees. "I love it there,” Gibbons said. The other boys don't because it's two hours down the freeway, but I used to do that all the time. It is one of my favourite tracks. Not because I grew up there but it's a spacious track. It's a beautiful area and it's good to get back and see some family and friends." Gibbons has rides in eight of the ten races on Saturday, including the three features, with Queensland Derby (Gr 1, 2400m) hero Maison Louis (Super Seth) representing his best chance of another stakes win in The Beauford (2300m). The six-year-old closed well for third behind Lindermann (Lonhro) in the Hill Stakes (Gr 2, 1900m) two starts ago but disappointed in the Rosehill Gold Cup (Gr 3, 2000m) where Gibbons attributed the effort to soft, shifty conditions. "He was a little bit disappointing the other day, but I put that down to the rain on the day," Gibbons said. "He travelled so well in the run. He travelled on the back of the winner and the moment I clicked him up he just completely lost his way. If you watch the replay, he gets himself on a weird angle and he was floating. I thought he didn't handle the track and visually, it looks the same way. His work suggests he has gotten over that run and I'm very happy with where he's at."

Pre-race key for debutant Seeiaye

Debutant Seeiaye (Russian Revolution) is the early favourite for the Max Lees Classic (900m) at Newcastle, but trainer Peter Snowden will reserve an opinion on his chances until the colt enters the mounting enclosure. The youngster has twice trialled nicely in preparation for Saturday's sprint, finishing runner-up at his initial hitout and taking out his latest 900-metre heat at Rosehill stylishly. However, while there are no question marks over his ability, Snowden warns Seeiaye is easily distracted and his behaviour pre-race will determine how he performs. "He can gallop," Snowden said. "He worked terrific on Tuesday, but he's just got to take that quiet attitude to the races. If he gets there and he's showing his anatomy off to everyone that's not going to be good. If he holds it together in the mounting yard, you'll know how he will run and if he does hold it together, he will run really well." A $65,000 Magic Millions purchase, Seeiaye remains a colt for now and will be among a field of 12 first starters lining up in the Max Lees Classic, named in honour of the late legendary Newcastle trainer.

Capitalist and I Am Invincible juveniles score at Warwick Farm

There were two juvenile trials conducted at Warwick Farm on Thursday, with the Gary Portelli-trained Regal Profit, a colt by Capitalist (Written Tycoon), winning one, while the other was taken out by I Am Invincible (Invincible Spirit) filly, I Am Dirty, trained by Bjorn Baker. The filly looked smooth throughout crossing the line 2.5 lengths ahead of Frostline (Blue Point). She was a $600,000 buy for her trainer and Jim Clarke from the Ridgmont draft at the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale earlier in the year and she is out of Group 3 scorer Dirty Thoughts (So You Think). Newgate will offer the filly’s sister at the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale next year. She is catalogued as Lot 220. The colt, meanwhile, crossed the line 1.4 lengths ahead of Hellish Charm (Hellbent). He was an $100,000 purchase for trainer from Newgate Farm’s 2025 Gold Coast draft. Regal Profit’s is one Portelli knows a lot about, having trained his dam’s half-sister, She Will Reign (Manhattan Rain), to two Group 1 victories, including the Golden Slipper (Gr 1, 1200m).

Delayed return for Kennedy

Leading apprentice Jaylah Kennedy’s racing return has been delayed, with confirmation injury will keep her sidelined until at least the new year. Having battled excruciating knee soreness for most of 2025, Kennedy elected to have surgery in September and had been hoping to be back race riding by the early summer. The setback means the 24-year-old will definitely miss the chance to defend her hometown Ballarat Cup (Listed, 2000m) crown on December 6, after she saluted in the race last year with Berkeley Square (Territories). “Doctors are now saying I won’t be back racing until at least the end of January,” she said. “I’ve been doing the full rehabilitation, but just the way my knee is still swelling up and the movements I’m unable to do without pain has pushed back my return, unfortunately.” Kennedy admits it’s been an extremely frustrating year battling the painful knee soreness and now delayed recovery, but says her disappointment was put into perspective after one of her good friends and fellow fourth-year apprentice Tom Prebble suffered a life-changing spinal cord injury two months ago.

Gerard confident pair can feature in 2,000 Guineas

Pre-post favourite Affirmative Action (Yes Yes Yes) will need to overcome a wide gate and a lighter than ideal preparation in his bid to defend the stable’s title in Saturday’s New Zealand 2,000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m). Trainer Pam Gerard, who prepared Savaglee (Savabeel) to an emphatic victory in last year’s Riccarton Classic, will be represented by both Affirmative Action and Romanoff (Belardo) in this year’s renewal. Their southern journey was briefly delayed, but both arrived in Christchurch on Thursday morning in excellent order. “They both travelled well, so we’re happy they got there safe and sound and they’re both in good form,” Gerard said. Regular rider George Rooke will again partner Affirmative Action, who has drawn barrier 15. The gelding has already proven his ability to overcome tough draws, having won the Sir Colin Meads Trophy (Listed, 1200m) from the outside gate two starts ago before scoring again at Ellerslie. “He doesn’t know much different with a wide gate, so if we don’t tell him he won’t know,” Gerard said. “I’m still learning a bit about him really, it’s hard to get a line on him as he’s such a laid-back fellow that you might think hasn’t got any more in the tank, but George (Rooke) assures me there’s plenty left. He just jumps and puts himself there in his races and completely buttons off.” Stablemate Romanoff (Belardo) has emerged as a genuine contender after two solid lead-ups, including a third on heavy ground at Rotorua and another placing in the James & Annie Sarten Memorial (Gr 2, 1400m).

Ritchie confident Tajana can measure up in Guineas test

Shaune Ritchie is optimistic his bold decision to sidestep the fillies’ feature at Riccarton will pay dividends when Tajana (Darci Brahma) tackles the boys in Saturday’s New Zealand 2,000 Guineas. The filly has been a standout among her age group this spring, with victories in the Northland Breeders’ Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) and Sunline Vase (Gr 3, 1400m) before finishing third to Well Written (Written Tycoon) in the Soliloquy Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m). While the New Zealand 1,000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) had been her likely target, Ritchie and training partner Colm Murray opted to avoid another clash with Well Written, a move the trainer now feels was vindicated. “I think the decision to run her against the colts was justified by the emphatic way that Well Written buried them in the 1000 Guineas,” Ritchie said. “I very much doubt we would’ve been able to beat her, especially from the draw she had in the race. We compare ourselves with Lollapalooza who ran a good second, so I think we’ve made the right call to take on the colts. In saying that, we’re walking into the unknown with the colts.” Tajana will be ridden by Craig Grylls from barrier three, with side winkers added for the first time. “We’re adding side winkers to sharpen up that turn of foot that she’s got, it would be nice if she could race a little bit handier, but the Riccarton straight allows you to be able to relax back in the field,” Ritchie said.

Nereus and Alaskan step out at Tauranga

Shaune Ritchie will have a strong hand at Tauranga on Saturday, with multiple Group winner Nereus (Savabeel) resuming in the Happy Hire Cup (1400m) and Alaskan (Niagara) looking to bounce back in the Devan Plastics 1600. “He’s carrying a lot more condition than he has at any point in time… he’s always been relatively athletic,” Ritchie said of Nereus. “He has run cheeky races fresh… so with a stronger version of himself, he can go a cheeky sort of race here. We’re getting three kilos off with Sam McNab as well because the 60 kilos is an impost. He’s been a great flagbearer for the stable and his best trips are around that 2000 to 2400m mark, so his main targets will be some of those summer cups.” Ritchie is also hoping to see a lift from Alaskan, who finished sixth in last season’s New Zealand Oaks (Gr 1, 2400m) but failed to fire first-up. “She’s the sort of horse that we thought could be a New Zealand Cup hope this time last year… her trials and first up run were sub-standard at best,” he said. “We just backed off her a bit and took our time and she seems to be working on the training tracks with a lot more willingness… If she does return to that late three-year-old form we expect her to get through the grades over ground, but we need to see a vast improvement from that run which was some time ago.”

US: Grade 3 winner Bishops Bay fetches US$1.3 million at Keeneland

Bishops Bay (Credit: Keeneland Photo)

Bishops Bay, a five-year-old son of Uncle Mo (Indian Charlie), was the headline act of Wednesday’s Keeneland November Horses of Racing Age Sale when Pedro Lanz, agent for KAS Stables, purchased the five-year-old for US$1.3 million (approx. AU$), a record price for the sale. Consigned by Elite, agent, which sold six horses for US$200,000 (approx. AU$) or more, Bishops Bay also captured the Salvator Mile (Gr 3, 8f) and the Westchester Stakes (Gr 3, 8f) this year and has posted five wins in seven starts with earnings of US$468,600 in 2025. In his career, Bishops Bay has won eight races in 12 starts and has earned US$702,800. Keeneland sold 108 horses through the ring for US$10,455,000 (approx. AU$15.95 million), an increase of 21.39 per cent from last year’s gross of US$8,613,000 for 105 horses sold through the ring. The average of US$96,806 (approx. AU$147,760) increased 18.01 per cent from US$82,029 in 2024. The median declined 20 per cent from $50,000 to US$40,000 (approx. AU$61,050).

Two-year-old filly Calamari Ring (Street Boss) made the perfect start to her career on the final day of the Flemington spring carnival when scoring an impressive debut win in the Inglis Banner (RL, 1000m).

Ridden by Ethan Brown, the Ciaron Maher-trained filly showed great maturity to head up the centre of the Flemington straight in driving rain and lead in ten male and female rivals by 0.2 lengths on debut in the Banner as she defeated Streisand (Magnus).

The victory comfortably eclipsed her purchase price in one hit with the $240,000 first prize.

Maher was delighted with the filly’s debut performance, tipping she had “a bright future”.

“God I thought she’s done a great job,” the winning trainer told Racing.com. “She came up the middle of the track, had never seen the straight.

“She’s always shown ability. I didn’t think she’d get to the races this early, but as good horses do, they do well in training, and every time we’ve asked a little bit of her it brought her on.”

Calamari Ring lined up off the back of two jump-outs, the latest a victory at Cranbourne on October 20 as the only two-year-old in the field against ten older males and females.

“Ciaron thought enough of her to trial against three-year-olds and she held her own in what looked wet enough ground,” Brown told Racing.com.

“I was always confident she was going to handle it today. She’s just prepared so well. She was very professional and made my job easy, for a young horse. She’s nice and fit for a heavy track first up, and you can’t kick your career off in much better fashion than that.

“I did have a look at the track and I thought anywhere up the middle was fine. Once she let down, she let down nice.”

Bred and sold by Victoria’s Two Bays Farm, Calamari Ring was purchased by Hall Of Fame and Shane McGrath Bloodstock for $140,000 at the 2024 Inglis Great Southern Weanling Sale.

She is the fourth foal - all fillies - out of Excelsior Island (Exceed And Excel), a two-time winner in New Zealand and half-sister to that country’s Champion 2YO of 2011-12, Warhorse (General Nediym). Excelsior Island now has a fifth filly foal, by Rubick (Encosta De Lago), and was covered last season by Dirty Work (Written Tycoon).
