Inglis release sparkling catalogue for Classic Yearling Sale

A half-brother to Private Harry (Harry Angel) and a brother to Stretan Angel (Harry Angel) are among the highlights of a sparkling catalogue for a Classic Yearling Sale which Inglis expects to enhance the auction’s reputation for quality at bargain prices.

A total of 798 lots have been catalogued - eight fewer than in 2025 - for the sale at Riverside from February 8-10.

What's On

And Inglis Bloodstock CEO Sebastian Hutch said buyers could expect a wide range of attractive offerings from what he feels could be the best crop of yearlings seen in Australia for several years.

Among those likely to turn heads is Lot 56, a colt by Zousain (Zoustar) who’s the seventh foal out of Happy Pilgrim (Congrats), the dam of Nathan Doyle’s star sprinter Private Harry. The colt is offered by NSW Southern Highlands farm Rheinwood Pastoral, who also bred Private Harry.

Also sold at Classic, for $115,000, Private Harry went through his first five starts unbeaten last season, culminating in Randwick’s The Galaxy (Gr 1, 1100m), before a multi-million dollar buy-in from Yulong.

Also sure to be in demand is Lot 462, a colt from NSW’s Kirks Bridge Farm by Harry Angel (Dark Angel) out of Sretan (Bernardini), who’s a brother to Stretan Angel.

That Phillip Stokes-trained mare is a winner of three stakes races and has been placed in three of Australia’s most important sprints, with seconds in the VRC Lightning Stakes (Gr 1, 1000m) and the SAJC The Goodwood (Gr 1, 1200m), and a third in the VRC Newmarket Handicap (Gr 1, 1200m).

Much is expected also of Lot 158, Glenlogan Park’s son of the late Snitzel (Redoute’s Choice) and Group 3-winning mare Madotti (Falvelon), and of Waikato Stud’s Lot 480, a son of their ten-time New Zealand champion sire Savabeel (Zabeel) who’s the second foal of three-time stakes winner Supreme Heights (Jimmy Choux).

A total of 74 vendors will present stock from 113 sires including such proven stallions as I Am Invincible (Invincible Spirit), Extreme Choice (Not A Single Doubt) and Snitzel, up-and-comers including The Autumn Sun (Redoute’s Choice), Ole Kirk (Written Tycoon) and Too Darn Hot (Dubawi), and 14 debutants such as Anamoe (Street Boss), Artorius (Flying Artie), Hitotsu (Maurice) and Jacquinot (Rubick).

Hutch was able to reflect on an “excellent” catalogue he feels represents the vast depth of yearlings on the ground for the 2026 sale season.

“My observation is it’s a better yearling crop than the year prior,” Hutch told ANZ News.

“A lot of people might say a sales company would say that, but that’s based on what we’ve seen and the information we’ve collected. We feel we’ve seen more nice horses than at any similar stage of the past number of years.

“It may well be that people are just showing us more horses, and thus we’re seeing more nice horses, but it just felt like earlier this year we had a fantastic round of yearling sales, and the market’s recognised that, and consequently it feels like more people want to sell nice horses.

“In general, we feel like it’s an exceptionally good crop of yearlings.”

Inglis statistics show Classic has produced 24 Group 1 winners since 2018, 13 of whom could have been bought for $100,000 or less. Classic has produced 41 millionaires in that period, while the average price for an Australian stakes winner out of the sale is $113,594, or 63 per cent less than the Gold Coast January Yearling Sale, Inglis said in a press release.

Those 24 elite winners include Pride Of Jenni (Pride Of Dubai), bought for $100,000, Sepals (Calyx), who was an $80,000 buy, Skybird (Exosphere), bought for $110,000, and Hong Kong star Voyage Bubble (Deep Field), who cost $380,000.

More lately, the past two winners of the $1m Golden Gift (1100m) - Revengeance (Hellbent) and North England (Farnan) - were also bought at Classic, for $100,000 and $280,000 respectively.

Such outcomes have helped boost Classic’s reputation as “a trainers’ sale”, for its knack of producing quality horses at reasonable prices.

“I think we work with vendors very carefully to identify the right horses for the sale,” Hutch said.

“There’s nothing flashy about the sale - there are more high-profile sales in Australasia - but the sale has consistently produced good racehorses.

“We consistently try to put horses in the sale we think can go on and be good racehorses, and look to try and have people represented in the catalogue with a reputation for breeding and selling good racehorses. It’s not rocket science.

“I think buyers like the sale. There’s a perception in the market which means you can secure good value at the sale, which means buyers approach the sale in a good mindset. They go there with the expectation of trying to buy nice horses at value.

“If it’s borne out on the racecourse that people are doing that and doing that well, then people get more enthusiastic about the sale.

“It feels like the sale’s got genuine momentum built up over a number of years. A lot of very significant horses of the last 12 to 36 months have come out of the sale, and that’s given people confidence to go and support the sale with more and more nice horses.”

Home Affairs (I Am Invincible) - Coolmore’s sale-topper of both Magic Millions Gold Coast and Inglis Easter as a first-season sire in 2025 - has a strong selection of 22 yearlings at Classic next year.

They include Lot 284, Lynton Farm’s daughter of Panegyria (Exceed And Excel), a winning daughter of dual Group 1 scorer Virage De Fortune (Anabaa) and Lot 491, Berkeley Park Stud’s filly out of dual Melbourne Group 3 winner Sylvia’s Mother (Snitzel).

There’s also Lot 592, Mullaglass Stud’s filly out of You Rang (Sebring), a half-sister to Group 3 winner Rise Of The Masses (Russian Revolution) out of Ruud Awakening (Bernardini), New Zealand’s Champion 2YO of 2012-13.

And Lot 706 is a Coolmore colt from dual stakes winner Celts (Lonhro), dam of two black type victors in La Tene (Helmet) and Gaulois (Street Cry).

Home Affairs’ sire, triple champion stallion I Am Invincible, has five offerings including Lot 367, Yarrman Park’s colt out of Royal Missile (Smart Missile), a stakes-placed half-sister to dual Group 1 winner Turffontein (Johannesburg).

Keenly awaited first season sire Anamoe has eight yearlings including Lot 12, Widden Stud’s son of three-time Perth stakes winner Flirtini (Artie Schiller), Lot 75, Tyreel Stud’s filly by Melbourne stakes winner and twice stakes placed I Am Eloquent (I Am Invincible), and Lot 539, Eureka Stud’s son of the Group 3-winning Tycoon Evie (Written Tycoon).

From the third-last crop by Snitzel comes four yearlings at the sale, including Lot 365, Arrowfield Stud’s colt second foal out of Royal Collection (Munnings), a three-time winner in the US whose dam My Princess Jess (Stormy Atlantic) won four stakes races there.

Darley’s much anticipated sire Pinatubo (Shamardal) - whose oldest progeny are just hitting the tracks - has 18 yearlings at the sale. They include Lot 178, Yarraman Park’s daughter of Meliora (Ad Valorem), winner of the Angus Armanasco Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m) and dam of two stakes winners in current Swettenham Stud sire I Am Immortal (I Am Invincible) and his brother Godfather.

Pinatubo also has Lot 497, Fairhill Farm’s filly first foal of an unraced daughter of Sistine Angel (Testa Rossa), who won two Group races in Melbourne and was Group 1 placed.

Champion first season sire Ole Kirk has 17 offerings including Lot 715 from his home stud Vinery, a filly whose third dam Alizes (Rory’s Jester) threw Group 1 winners in Alizee (Sepoy) and Astern (Medaglia D’Oro) and current Newgate Farm stallion Tassort (Brazen Beau).

Ole Kirk is also represented by Lot 92, Kia Ora Stud’s son of the Group 3 winner Jal Lei (Sebring).

The late Wootton Bassett (Iffraaj) has two yearlings entered including Lot 376, a daughter of the stakes-placed Sacred Valley (Fastnet Rock), whose brother Age Of Fire was the Equal Head of the 2017-18 New Zealand 3YO Free Handicap.

Arrowfield’s Japanese shuttler Maurice (Screen Hero) has 17 offerings, including Torryburn Stud’s Lot 744, a filly out of a half-sister to Hot King Prawn (Denman), Hong Kong’s Group 1-winning Champion Sprinter of 2020-21.

Despite pre-sale jitters based on relatively flat results in Australasia earlier in the year, Classic 2025 cleared 82 per cent at an average of $92,514 - just $42 less than the average for 2024, which achieved an 84 per cent clearance.

Hutch is wary of predicting market conditions for next February, but is reassured by the results of Classic 2025 - and other Inglis sales this year.

“Before the 2025 sale, we were prepared for a very challenging sale season, but I would say our Inglis sale season defied our expectations and market trends,” he said.

“I don’t feel the success of recent sales in the northern hemisphere, particularly in the US, have any bearing on our market whatsoever, except to remind people there’s still a strong demand around the world.

“But I will say that it feels like racing has had a good spring. The carnival in Sydney was successful. Melbourne felt particularly successful. Early summer racing has been very positive. There’s no disguising that the sport has its challenges, but people are enjoying racing.

“Our market this year was in defiance of the broader economy. We’ll probably have to be in defiance of the broader economy again in 2026, but the industry is very resilient and I imagine there are plenty of people looking forward to the sale season in 2026 off the back of what’s been a very positive spring and early summer in terms of racing.”

Hutch added: “You can talk the talk about a sale, but a sale has really got to walk the walk, and the Classic sale has.

“Classic is really putting its best foot forward in terms of its graduates. That gives people confidence in selling nice horses at the sale and that in turn encourages buyers to want to be more engaged with the sale.”

Morning Briefing

Gringotts set to hit The Gong again

Gringotts (Credit: Racing Photos)

The Ciaron Maher-trained Gringotts (Per Incanto) will be out to make a bit of history on Saturday when he bids to land The Gong (1600m) for the second year running. Having already scored in the Big Dance (1600m), the now six-year-old gelding went on to take The Gong by 0.8 lengths last year and, having again landed the Big Dance at Randwick on November 4, he will be aiming to repeat the feat this weekend. "He's come out of The Big Dance super," Maher said. "He's probably in career best form." Gringotts is rated the $2.50 favourite for The Gong while he could be joined in the $1 million race by stablemates nominated Vivy Air (Hellbent), who heads to Perth, and 2024 Caulfield Cup (Gr 1, 2400m) winner Duke De Sessa (Lope De Vega). Lugh (Snitzel), who finished third in the Big Dance, could also take his place in The Gong. "He felt the run in the Big Dance and we are still leaving the door open for him to start with Gringotts but a decision is still to come," Maher's assistant Jack Turnbull said.

Rey Magnerio to head West for Winterbottom

Group 2-winning sprinter Rey Magnerio (Magnus) is set to head to Perth for the Winterbottom Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m), with his trainer Robbie Griffiths favouring the Group 1 contest over a second crack at The Meteorite (1200m). "He leaves Sunday [16th] to go to Sydney, and then he flies from Sydney to Perth, and he should be there late Monday night," Griffiths said. A winner of the Caulfield Sprint (Gr 2, 1000m) first up for the campaign, Rey Magnerio finished an unlucky third in the Century Stakes (Listed, 1000m) at Flemington last time out, where his trainer felt he should've won comfortably. "He should have won easily," Griffiths said. "He just got into awkward spots, and in a 1000-metre race, you can't have anything go wrong. He's ended up sort of zigzagging everywhere, which is a shame. But the horse's performance was very, very good. We actually think the bigger track suits him a bit better than Cranbourne. Cranbourne, you've got to be sort of in a key spot, and last year we thought, because he raced forward, it took away a little bit of his sort of finish. Plus, we were going to go [to Perth] last year but we ended up electing for The Meteorite, so this year we thought we'd give it a crack. We kept him at the 1,000 [metres] so he didn't have too many hard runs. He had a pretty solid run at Caulfield first up, so we thought the 1,000 would be a lot easier than trying to take on the Champions Sprint. That way it gives him an extra couple of days to recover, knowing that he's got to travel for the first time, so we thought that was a better lead into the Winterbottom."

Railway plan for Storyville

A crack at the Railway Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) looks likely for Storyville (Overshare) after the Grant and Alana Williams-trained mare's victory in Saturday's RJ Peters Stakes (Gr 3, 1500m) at Ascot. Storyville had already cemented her place in the Railway field courtesy of her WA Guineas (Gr 2, 1600m) and WA Champion Fillies Stakes (Gr 3, 1600m) double last season, and the daughter of Overshare (I Am Invincible) seems to have hit form at the right time with the Railway soon approaching. “We were just trying to keep people out of the Railway!” Grant Williams said post-race. “No, all jokes aside - she is a handful - she's silly to get on, we had to put [William] Pikey on up there [outside the mounting yard] and we do need to take the edge off her. Next week will be the hardest race she's ever been in, we've just got to do the best we can and I think the best thing we can do for them is race them. Last season we put her into the Kingston Town [after the Guineas / Champion Fillies] and it flattened her - that showed in her winter prep.”

Australian Guineas target for Sheza Alibi

A crack at the Australian Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) could be on the radar for Sheza Alibi (Saxon Warrior) following her win in last Saturday's Sandown Guineas (Gr 2, 1600m) at Caulfield. The Peter Moody and Katherine Coleman-trained filly backed up a win in The Vanity (Gr 3, 1400m) with an impressive 5.8 length success in the Sandown Guineas, leaving Moody with the option to go even higher in the autumn. “I am very mindful she has had a pretty sustained preparation and a very rushed preparation,” the trainer told Racing.com. “She went through that Brisbane winter and only had a very short break before she came down here for the spring. She is only going to get a very short break in the autumn, so I wouldn’t think it would be a deep autumn. She’s only had three runs for us, but she has got that good turn of foot, so we really don’t know what the ceiling is. Ultimately, she is very professional. She eats her head off and, touch wood, she is amazingly sound. So, I thought that if we could keep her in our own backyard, which is Melbourne, for the moment maybe a race like the Australian Guineas is a realistic target against the boys. I am mindful of yesterday, with all due respects, she won a Benchmark 70 race, we’ve got to be realistic there. But we’ve seen her mix it with Autumn Boy and if you go back and watch the replay, she did it pretty tough that day and I reckon she’s improved significantly off that.”

Jimmysstar’s brother booked for jump-out

In’kantosstar (Per Incanto), a brother to three-time Group 1 scorer Jimmysstar, is set to have his first jump-out at Cranbourne on Monday over 800 metres. The three-year-old colt is by Per Incanto (Street Cry) and out of the Listed-winning mare Anniesstar (Zed) and is also trained by Jimmysstar's handler Ciaron Maher, and was purchased for $260,000 at the 2024 Inglis Easter Yearling Sale by Group 1 Bloodstock. “Jimmy’s going out and he’s playing tag-team with his little brother In’kantosstar,” part-owner Ozzie Kheir told Racing.com. “We’re very much looking forward to seeing what he can do. It’s of course unlikely he could reach the heights of his brother, but he’s coming along nicely.”

Hateley faces extended break

Steph Hateley faces another stint on the sidelines, with the apprentice expected to be out of action until at least February. The 30-year-old suffered a jump-out fall in April and has been plagued with injuries. Hateley hasn’t ridden since fracturing her back at Kilmore in mid-September and now has a journey back in recovery. “I had surgery again on October 30, which also included repairing the ligaments and reconstruction on the joints in the wrist,” Hateley told Racing.com. “I’ve learnt my lesson though and I’m not going to push myself to be back as soon as possible, like I did last time when I was back riding in July. Of course, it’s frustrating to be out once again and not getting to build strong momentum as an apprentice. But at the core of it I’m just so grateful to get the chance to return to riding, eventually, which is what I love. Only this year we’ve seen some tragic injuries to jockeys way, way worse than mine, so I’m not getting upset over a few extra months out as I get a chance to get back to doing what I love, and I’d never take that for granted.”

Enright breaks drought in Waipukurau Cup

Enright (Credit: Jane Davidson)

A huge crowd flocked to Waipukurau on Sunday as the Central Hawke’s Bay course hosted its first race meeting in six years, and Tauranga visitor Enright (Power) emphatically broke a drought of his own in the Waipukurau Cup (2100m). The $35,000 country feature was a first win since October 2022 for Enright, who has now had 43 starts for four wins, 13 placings and $179,300 in prize-money. He is trained by Stuart Manning, who co-bred and part-owns the gelding along with Kaye Durrant. The eight-year-old ran out a 2.3 length winner over Danjuro (Saxon Warrior) under Erin Leighton. “It was a bloody awesome day,” said Leighton, who also picked up a second win on Sunday’s card aboard Pepeha (Darci Brahma). She has now won seven races this spring in a remarkable return following an injury-enforced absence of three years. “It was honestly one of the coolest days I’ve experienced on a New Zealand racetrack. It was an amazing day, and to win the Cup was icing on the cake and a real thrill. We had a terrible draw. We ended up caught three wide, but I managed to get a bit of cover. It started to get a bit scruffy inside me from the half-mile, they were bunching up and I was hearing a bit of shouting. That was when I decided to hook out, and he just trotted past them and went on to win easily. I thought it was a hugely impressive performance.”

When Stars Align makes winning return

Te Akau Racing collected a race-to-race double at Tauranga on Saturday, including a highly satisfying return to winning form by When Stars Align (Zoustar) in a Rating 65 contest over 1200 metres. A well-related son of Zoustar (Northern Meteor), he was bought by David Ellis for $400,000 as a yearling at Karaka in 2023 and showed bright promise in the early stages of his career. He was a debut winner at Trentham as a two-year-old, then contested the Karaka Millions 2YO (RL, 1200m) in only his second start. He returned at three to place behind Savaglee (Savabeel) at Taupo, followed by a third in the Barneswood Farm Stakes (Gr 3, 1400m) at Ashburton. But he pulled up lame when finishing at the tail of the field in the New Zealand 2,000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m), prompting Mark Walker and Sam Bergerson to send him for a spell and have him gelded. On Saturday, on the anniversary of that 2,000 Guineas disappointment, When Stars Align was right back at the peak of his powers. Sent straight to the lead by Corentin Berge, When Stars Align dominated the $40,000 sprint from and kicked away in the straight to win by 1.5 lengths over Bellarista (Belardo). “It’s great to see him back in the winner’s circle,” Walker said. “It’s not that he’s lacked ability, but it took a bit of time after he was gelded to return to form and the owners have been really patient with him. Winning his first run back as a four-year-old is a good sign and hopefully he will gain confidence from the win and he can go on to a higher level.”

Mary Shan back on track with Tauranga victory

Mary Shan (Credit: Race Images)

Classy mare Mary Shan (Almanzor) has black-type targets on her agenda after bouncing back to winning form in an open handicap over 1400 metres at Tauranga on Saturday. The daughter of Almanzor (Wootton Bassett) was close up in elite three-year-old competition two seasons ago, finishing second in the Soliloquy Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m) and Eight Carat Classic (Gr 2, 1600m), fourth in the Levin Classic (Gr 1, 1600m) and fifth in the New Zealand 1,000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m). She added another two black-type placings to her record in last season’s Aotearoa Classic (Listed, 1600m) and Matamata Cup (Listed, 1600m). Mary Shan kicked off her current season with a bold first-up victory at Wanganui on August 30, hinting that her five-year-old season might be her best yet. But she was brought undone by a testing track in her second-up assignment in the Taranaki Breeders’ Stakes (Gr 3, 1400m), beating only one runner home as the $3 favourite. Andrew Forsman was hoping to get Mary Shan back on track in Saturday’s race on a Soft 5 surface, and he got exactly what he was looking for as the mare defeated Gospodin (Proisir) by 1.5 lengths under Wiremu Pinn. “It was really good to see her bounce back,” Forsman said. “She got tripped up by a very heavy track at Hawera the start before. She won very nicely at Tauranga to get the campaign back on track, and hopefully it’ll give her a bit of a confidence boost. I don’t really have any firm plans in mind for her from here, but it’s all going to be about trying to add black-type to her pedigree page. There’s a few nice options coming up. She could potentially back up for the Auckland Thoroughbred Breeders’ Stakes at Pukekohe next Saturday, although there’s the prospect of some rain around, so we won’t rush into a decision on that.”

Asia

Third for Logotype

Pod Logo (4 c ex Skratta by King Kamehameha) became the third individual stakes winner for Lex Stud stallion Logotype (Lohengrin) when scoring in Sunday’s Fukushima Minyu Cup (Listed, 1700m). Trained by Masato Nishizono, the four-year-old colt defeated Dante Barows (Drefong) by a nose with just a neck further back to the third-placed Action Plan (Leontes). Out of the winning King Kamehameha (Kingmambo) mare Skratta, Pod Logo is a half-brother to winner Vinnarkrona (Satono Crown). Logotype stood the 2025 northern hemisphere breeding season at a fee of ¥500,000 (approx. AU$4,980).

JPN: Regaleira rules in Queen Elizabeth II Cup

Regaleira (4 f Suave Richard - Roca by Harbinger) added a third Group 1 to her CV when landing Sunday’s Queen Elizabeth II Cup (Gr 1, 2200m) at Kyoto in great style. Ridden by Keita Tosaki for Tetsuya Kimura, the four-year-old daughter of Suave Richard (Heart’s Cry) scored by a length and three-quarters over Paradis Reine (Kizuna). There was a further length back to the third-placed Lilac (Orfevre).

International

184 for Into Mischief

Shred The Gnar (3 f ex Aspen Light by Bernardini) provided Spendthrift Farm’s Into Mischief (Harlan’s Holiday) with his 184th individual stakes winner when she took out the Chilukki Stakes (Gr 3, 8f) at Churchill Downs on Saturday. The Brian Lynch-trained filly was winning for the third time in four starts as she beat One Magic Philly (Good Magic) by two and three-quarter lengths. Favourite Ragtime (Union Rags) was a further length away in third. A $610,000 purchase from the 2023 edition of The Saratoga Sale, Fasig-Tipton's select yearling sale, Shred The Gnar is out of the unraced Bernardini (A.P. Indy) mare Aspen Light, making her a sister to multiple stakes winner Owendale. Into Mischief will stand the upcoming northern hemisphere breeding season for a fee of US$250,000 (approx. AU$383,610).

US: Fionn bags Jockey Club Oaks

Fionn (3 f Twirling Candy - Gaelic Gold by Giant’s Causeway) notched her fifth stakes victory from ten starts when she got the better of her seven rivals to land the Jockey Club Oaks (Gr 3, 11f) at Aqueduct on Saturday. The Brad Cox-trained filly, whose previous wins included the Belmont Oaks (Gr 1, 9f) back in July, beat favourite Laurelin (Zarak) by a half-length with a gap of three lengths back to Don’t Jinx It (Kitten’s Joy) in third.

CAN: Nobals defends Kennedy Road title

Nobals (6 g Noble Mission - Pearly Blue by Empire Maker) repeated his exploits of 12 months earlier when successfully defending his title in Saturday’s Kennedy Road Stakes (Gr 2, 6f) at Woodbine. Trained by Larry Rivelli, the 2023 Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint (Gr 1, 5f) winner beat Lucky Score (Lookin At Lucky) by a half-length, with Awesome Bourbon (Not Bourbon) another neck away in third.
