Perth’s premier training partnership Grant and Alana Williams will roll out a strong hand in Saturday’s Railway Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) at Ascot as they look to extend their remarkable record in Western Australia’s flagship mile contest.

Grant Williams first won the race with Elite Belle (Canny Lad) in 2014, while the husband-and-wife team dominated between 2018 and 2021, producing four consecutive winners in Galaxy Star (Redoute’s Choice), Regal Power (Pierro), Inspirational Girl (Reliable Man) and Western Empire (Iffraaj).

What's On

Western Empire returns for this year’s edition and shapes as a major player after attacking the line late to finish fifth in the Lee Steere Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m) last start. The eight-year-old has drawn the inside gate, with Billy Egan heading west for the ride.

“I reckon we've probably got him going as good as we've ever had him going, to be honest, and I thought his first up run was great,” Grant Williams told ANZ News.

“It was a pretty hard track bias that day, so we definitely weren't going to go forward because we drew wide, so we had to ride him just one way and cop our medicine. But his sectionals and his run home time was fantastic. It was a perfect lead up, we are very happy with where he's at.”

Williams believes Western Empire is well treated under the handicap conditions.

“I think he's got in pretty good this year with the 58kg and the weight scales. There's only one horse on 53. Super Smink is on 56 - that's what she'd carry in a weight-for-age race against him. So I think he's got into it really good, and he wouldn't have carried 58 since he was a maiden, I wouldn't have thought.

“From barrier one we just have to ride for luck. Billy's a gun, so that's the only instructions I’ll be giving him.”

Stablemate Watch Me Rock (Awesome Rock) heads the market at $3.60 and brings an imposing record of ten wins from 18 starts, including a last-start victory in the Asian Beau Stakes (Gr 3, 1400m) on November 1.

The gelding, by Gold Front Thoroughbred Breeding and Racing stallion Awesome Rock (Fastnet Rock), will jump from barrier four under leading rider William Pike.

“I couldn't be happier with him,” Williams said. “I think he's peaking at the right time. The stables crew have done a great job getting him here. He's nice and healthy. He's got a great jockey, he's got a great barrier, and he's got winning form, so we're pretty happy with where he's at.

“He's a winner, his record says that, and I've got no negatives with him. I reckon he's on the way up. He'll win some nice races in his career and hopefully Saturday is the first.”

Four-year-old mare Storyville (Overshare) completes the primary trio, arriving off a determined victory in the R.J. Peters Stakes (Gr 3, 1500m) on November 15. She will start from barrier 14 (ten after emergencies), with Fred Kersley returning home to Western Australia to chase his first Group 1 win.

“It would have been great if she probably drew in a little bit closer, but in saying that out of the three runners, it's probably the one where I was happy with,” Williams said.

Storyville (Credit: Western Racepix)

“She's probably going to jump from barrier 10. She's going to get the room that she's needed. I reckon she's probably as good as we've ever had her. She drew barrier one last start, and it was against her to win from there because she had to quicken really fast off a slow tempo, and she still won. So she's pulled up good from that run. She looks fantastic. She'll need a little bit of luck, but she's definitely good enough.”

Storyville carries added sentimental value as a homebred raced by the Williams family.

“Alana bred her, I can't take the credit for that. That's her baby. She's actually doing okay at the breeding caper, so it would be a huge thing for her to at least be placed tomorrow. We've got her half-sister by Toronado going through the Easter sale, so that would be a huge tick.”

Emergencies Hemlockstone (Delghar) and Yonga Lass (Universal Ruler) round out the stable’s Railway acceptors.

Of Hemlockstone, Williams said: “He's probably looking for further at the moment, he'll head to a Perth Cup, or he'll head to the Northerly Stakes and the Ted Van Heemst going through.”

On Yonga Lass, he added: “We were always aimed up at this race. She ran second in the Kalgoorlie race and just didn't get enough points to get through. She's obviously the second emergency, but that's okay – she's probably just under these guys. If she had Willie Pike riding, he seems to be able to get the best out of her, she would have been a good chance, but she doesn't look like getting a run. I think she'll be a good chance in the [Carbine Club of W.A. Stakes].”

Asked to split his runners, Williams said: “I actually think it's hard to split Watch Me Rock and Western Empire, but geez, it's gonna take a good horse to beat Western Empire.”

The Williams stable currently leads both the Western Australian general and metropolitan trainers’ premierships, and with strong interstate support for the carnival, Williams believes the local industry is trending upwards.

“We've obviously got a few issues that we're trying to work through at the moment, but the racing itself is really good,” he said.

“It's as strong and as even as we've had it for a few years. The quality of three-year-olds coming through, which you can see in the Guineas, there's some superstars down the track there. We're in a pretty good spot. We just need to fix a few things on the outside of that.”

Morning Briefing

Australia

Statuario ready for Cranbourne Cup task

Co-trainers Emma-Lee and David Browne will be hoping Statuario (D’Argento) can make his presence felt in Saturday’s Cranbourne Cup (Listed, 1600m). The four-year-old gelding has produced some good performances this season, including finishing fourth behind subsequent Caulfield Cup (Gr 1, 2400m) and Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) winner Half Yours (St Jean) in the Naturalism Stakes (Gr 3, 2000m) in September and he enters the weekend’s Listed event following a second-placed finish in a Benchmark 90 (1400m) on November 6. "We took him to Cranbourne during the week as he does get quite above himself and we've found in the past taking him to those gallops always finishes him off quite nicely for the race ahead. He does very well in the paddock, so we're looking at this race on Saturday and then maybe the Ballarat Cup and then another little break. He didn't have much luck earlier in the spring when we were getting wide draws, but he still ran pretty well.”

Hedged hones in on The Meteorite

After finishing second on his last-start in the Village Stakes (Listed, 1100m) at Caulfield, the Gavin Bedggood-trained Hedged (Capitalist) will attempt to go one better in The Meteorite (1200m) at Cranbourne on Saturday. "It was always an option, as we have always known it was there," Bedggood said. "When he drew well last week and he came up favourite, we had to take our chance. We didn't get our chance, but in saying that I still think we run second, just a little closer, and he certainly hasn't raced poorly for us. He had no luck first-up, he was stiff second-up at Flemington, and probably should have run second, and I think last week he was beaten by the better horse."

Beer and Carpenter bidding to make instant impact

Co-trainers Mitchell Beer and George Carpenter are hoping to deliver the Kembla Grange locals a feature race win when they saddle speedy mare Sunrise (Charm Spirit) in The Warra (1000m). Formerly based at Albury, Beer relocated to the provincial track two years ago and in September this year, Carpenter became his official business partner. "Kembla has fast become home. It's terrific," Beer said. "We've got a pretty big day socially [on Saturday]. We have about 300 people in our marquee on-course, so as new as we are to Wollongong and the club, it feels like our big day pretty quickly.” Sunrise started her career in New Zealand and was identified by two of Beer's staff as a suitable acquisition. Paying $45,000 for her at the 2024 Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale, Sunrise has since posted three wins, including a 7.3-length romp over The Warra course and distance in March when she set a track record of 55.58 seconds for the 1000 metres. "We're a stable that loves getting hold of tried horses," Beer said. "Her form in New Zealand was good, and I thought if she could take good physical improvement, she would stack up OK. It would be nice to be taking her back through that sale in a couple of years as a stakes winner."

Wet weather a concern for Zealously

Peter Snowden says the forecast does concern him for Zealously’s (Harry Angel) bid to win The Warra given soft ground makes him vulnerable and heavy ground is his kryptonite. The four-year-old has been marking time since he ran a close third in the Caulfield Sprint (Gr 2, 1000m) on Everest day and regardless of whether he runs or not Snowden is confident he’s a sprinter of the future. “I think he will definitely make a good level. He’s already stakes placed and he’ll be there long term from now out,’’ the trainer told Racing NSW. “He can handle a bit of rain. The glitch in his armour is he runs third or fourth instead of winning on wet ground. He ran really well at Caulfield, he got it a bit wrong on the corner and he probably lost a length and was beaten a neck or so. They ran fast time but that was a learning curve for him and if we go back there again we know he’ll be okay. I thought he acquitted himself very well.” There is the option of the Starlight Stakes (Listed, 1100m) next week if he does not run at Kembla while the Razor Sharp Handicap (Listed, 1200m) next month is in Snowden’s plans as he’d like to test Zealously at 1200 metres.

Gringotts chasing Gong double

Ciaron Maher’s assistant Johann Gerard-Dubord said he is struggling to find a reason why Gringotts (Per Incanto) cannot defend his title in Saturday’s Gong (1600m) at Kembla Grange. The son of Per Incanto (Street Cry) secured back-to-back wins in the Big Dance (1600m) earlier in the month and all the signs point to the gelding defending another title this weekend. “He looks great, his work since the Big Dance has been good,’’ Gerard-Dubord told Racing NSW. “We know he likes the mile at Kembla, weight will be no issue, he’s drawn well, Nash [Rawiller] knows him well. It’s hard to find a negative. He goes on any ground, he’s very versatile. If the track was on speed like it was last year we could be more aggressive, or we have the option to ride quieter. In the Big Dance he had the right gate that allowed him to do no work in the run, he just sprinted home once he got the gap. Even though he had a lot of weight it was a soft win in the end and it took nothing out of him. You wouldn’t say he’s improved again but he’s going as well as he was going into it.”

Estadio Mestalla ready to strike in The Gong

Estadio Mestalla (Galileo Gold) will have to overcome a wide barrier if he is to win The Gong at Kembla Grange on Saturday. The Joe Pride-trained six-year-old will jump from barrier 17 with Adam Hyeronimus booked to take the ride. The gelding landed a Benchmark 100 (1500m) in August, he then took another Benchmark 1000 over 1100 metres in November and was last seen running sixth in The Hunter (1300m) last weekend. Hyeronimus said he couldn’t have expected a lot more from his run last week and will ride the gelding to how Pride feels will lead to the best result. “I’ll be guided by what Joe wants me to do and what he has in mind,’’ the rider told Racing NSW. “It’ll either be forward or back, I don’t see the use in trying to hope to get into a position midfield. He seems to be in a good frame of mind this preparation, he’s very willing to be there and be at the races so it makes my job easier. This has been a bit of a target for Joe with this horse but there are also other races coming up where he can be competitive.”

Our Gold Hope looking to seize the opportunity

As much as Luke Price wanted to have Our Gold Hope (Lope De Vega) running in Saturday’s feature at Kembla Grange he’d be more than happy to settle for the Group 1-placed mare to regain winning touch. It is important for Price and his father Robert to be represented in the Gong but it’s just as important to have their stable star run well on their showcase day. And he says the Evergreen Turf Handicap (1600m) provides that chance. “The mare hasn’t won in a long time but gee she finds the right race,’’ he told Racing NSW. “I hope she’s not one of those horses that always finds bad luck. It’s probably a blessing we didn’t get a run in the Gong. It’s up to her on her home track, back in trip and back to 1600 metres with winkers on to sharpen her up, to see what she can do.”

Paradoxium wins juvenile trial

The Bjorn Baker-trained Paradoxium, a son of Extreme Choice (Not A Single Doubt), who finished third in the Breeders’ Plate (Gr 3, 1000m) on his debut, landed one of the two juvenile trials at Randwick on Friday. The colt defeated Celtic Spy (Farnan) by 1.7 lengths with another 0.5 lengths back to Belvante (Farnan) in third. A $400,000 buy for his trainer, Jim Clarke and Ridgmont from the Silverdale Farm draft at the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale earlier this year, the colt is out of the dual winning stakes-placed mare Paredo (Better Than Ready), a half-sister to the stakes-placed winner Snipzu (Snippetson), who in turn produced stakes-placed pair The Drinks Cart (Unemcumbered) and Don Corleone (Extreme Choice), who finished second in Group 1 company and now stands at the McAlpine Family’s Eureka Stud in Queensland.

Gimcrack winner posts stylish trial at Randwick

Gimcrack Stakes (Gr 3, 1000m) winner Shiki (Too Darn Hot) landed the other two-year-old trial of the morning at Randwick. The Gai Waterhouse and Adrain Bott filly cruised home to beat Lumbini (Russian Revolution) by a length. Bought by Riverstone Lodge and Suman Hedge Bloodstock for $150,000 at the Inglis Australian Weanling Sale in 2024 from the Cornerstone Stud draft, the filly then fetched $420,000 when selling to her trainers and Kurrinda Bloodstock at the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale earlier this year. The filly’s Ole Kirk (Written Tycoon) half-sister will be offered by Riverstone Lodge at this year’s Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale. The youngster is catalogued as Lot 405.

Racing Reform seeking change in NSW

A new organisation dedicated to ensuring the sustainability of the NSW Thoroughbred industry has been established featuring a number of prominent participants.

The current review of the legislation that establishes Racing NSW represents a crucial juncture in the industry’s future, and the Racing Reform Group NSW features a steering committee that brings a vast amount of experience from across racing administration, ownership and breeding to best address this opportunity and challenge.

One of the group’s first objectives is to have the terms of reference for the government review of the Thoroughbred Racing Act, which is being conducted by former Health Minister Brad Hazzard, broadened. Under the current terms of reference, two critical areas have been excluded: the funding model of racing and the relationship between Racing NSW and the state government.

The Racing Reform Group has lodged a petition on the NSW Parliamentary website calling for these issues to be included. The group is also encouraging all participants in the industry to make a submission to the Hazzard Review.

“We really are in a crucial period for racing in NSW and it is important that those who care passionately about our industry have their voices heard,” said Brian Nutt, who is secretary of the group.

He added: “The Hazzard review is especially important in shaping what racing will look like in the years ahead, but at the moment it can’t look at two of the most critical areas. We’re calling on the Minister to change the scope of the inquiry so Mr Hazzard can examine all the major issues.

"The feedback I hear again and again is we must have these issues included, so we need those who care about horse racing to get online and support the petition.”

Others on the Steering Group include prominent owner Jason Abrahams, lawyer and owner David Walter, Helen Sinclair, who has decades of experience in race club management across the state, Yarraman Park’s Arthur Mitchell, former Australian Turf Club and Australian Jockey Club director Julia Ritchie and bloodstock agent Will Johnson.

The Racing Reform Group will be making a submission to the Hazzard review, but Abrahams said anyone with a passion about the industry’s future people should consider engaging with the process.

He said: “There isn’t long left, with submissions closing next Monday afternoon, but the process is easy. Either upload your own submission or Hill in a survey on the review site.

“If you want to see improvements in how racing is administered then it’s important to make your voice heard and share your opinions. We need some really strong recommendations that will identify positive changes for consideration by Minister Harris and this can only come about by providing insightful submissions to the review."

The Racing Reform Group has launched a site at reformnswracing.org which hosts details of the petition and how to get involved in the conversation about racing in the state.

Dates locked in for NZB National Online Yearling Sale

The dates for NZB’s National Online Yearling Sale have been confirmed for 2026, with the Sale set to be held on leading online auction platform Gavelhouse Plus. The catalogue will be available to view online from March 31, with bidding set to open on April 10 and closing from 6pm (NZT) on Tuesday April 14. A significant benefit of the digital catalogue is that all lots offered in the National Online Yearling Sale are eligible to be nominated for the lucrative Karaka Millions Series. Just nine short months after they make their virtual sale-ring debut, graduates of the online sale can compete for a share in the 2027 Karaka Millions 2YO (RL, 1200m), followed by the 2028 TAB Karaka Millions 3YO (RL, 1600m), as well as the NZB Mega Maiden Bonus Series with $1m in bonuses up for grabs across 40 maiden races each season. Graduates of the relatively new sale have already had multiple successes on the racetrack, with 146 runners claiming 133 wins on the track. This includes the unbeaten and recent New Zealand 1,000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) winner Well Written (Written Tycoon) and Eight Carat Classic (Gr 2, 1600m) winner Hitabell (Embellish), both trained by Stephen Marsh.

Marotiri Molly takes aim at Group 2

The Matt Dixon-trained Marotiri Molly (Per Incanto) will attempt to add a second Group race to her record when she tackles Saturday’s Auckland Thoroughbred Breeders’ Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m) at Pukekohe. “She’s good to go and she’s not an overly big mare and it’s been pretty tough on her carrying big weights, so I’m looking forward to getting her back to a set weight race,” Dixon said. The mare will be taking aim at the Pukekohe event for the second time after a luckless bid 12 months ago. “She was third to La Crique after missing the kick and ended up two lengths last and flew home,” Dixon said. Marotiri Molly heads north off the back of an open handicap win at Tauherenikau, the seventh victory of the seven-year-old’s 18-start career. “I got her unbroken as a late three-year-old and then she suffered from chronic shin soreness,” Dixon said. “She went sore about five or six times, she’s very fine boned and every time I put a bit of pressure on her she’d go shinny again and had a few growing pains along the way as well. She always showed a lot of speed and ability, but when the pressure went on her legs couldn’t cope, it was a long and frustrating process. It took a lot of time to get over all that before she was away.” Dixon has yet to confirm the mare’s program beyond Pukekohe, but another crack at a Group 1 title is high on the wish list.

Wallbank keen on Midnight Edition’s home track prospects

Not even a wide draw can dent Bruce Wallbank’s enthusiasm at the prospects of his talented sprinter Midnight Edition (Wrote) in the Haunui Farm Counties Bowl (1100m) at Pukekohe on Saturday. Midnight Edition came up with barrier 11 in the 16-horse field for his home-track feature, but that includes two balloted runners drawn inside him. “He’ll end up jumping from eight or nine with scratchings and if anything, the way he races the draw might benefit him,” Wallbank said. “When you look at his record and the weight they’ve given him, he deserves to be favourite – I can’t believe he’s got only half a kilo above the minimum.” The gelding had always shown ability, winning three of his 12 starts as a three-year-old as well as placing in the likes of the Auckland Guineas (Gr 2, 1400m), in which he was relegated after dead-heating with Yaldi (Ardrossan), and another smart sort in Checkmate (Mongolian Khan) finishing third. Midnight Edition’s four-year-old campaign began with an open 1200-metre win at Te Rapa in mid-September, and he finished second in his two subsequent starts, most recently beaten a neck in the Sweynesse Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) at Rotorua six weeks ago. “He’s had a break and he’s spot-on for Saturday,” Wallbank said. “He loves that track and it will take a good horse to beat him.”

Waldron excited about Southland prospects

Fresh off a victory over New Zealand Cup Week, Wingatui trainer Joseph Waldron is hoping to quickly add to that tally when he heads south to Ascot Park on Sunday with a couple of handy chances. Former northerner Sabrina Hall (Mongolian Khan) impressed when runner-up in her southern debut at her new home track earlier this month, and Waldron is confident she can go one better in the McGregor Concrete & Farmers Dipping (1400m) this weekend. Waldron has been impressed with Sabrina Hall and is looking forward to her stepping out for the first time in Southland this weekend. “She was really good fresh, especially without a trial or a jumpout,” he said. “She has made good improvement from that and I am looking forward to Sunday.” Sabrina Hall has drawn barrier 16, but that poses no concerns for Waldron.“She is a horse with really good ability,” he said. “From that kind of gate you just need to ride them like they are the best horse in the race, and that’s what we will be doing.” Waldron will also head to Ascot Park with well-travelled gelding Allibor (All Too Hard), who will contest the Nightcaps Contracting (2200m).

HK: Romantic Warrior set for long-awaited Hong Kong return in Jockey Club Cup

Hong Kong fans will finally get the chance to see global superstar Romantic Warrior (Acclamation) back on home soil on Sunday, almost a year after he last stepped out at Sha Tin. The winner of ten Group 1 races was last seen locally easing to victory in the 2024 edition of the Hong Kong Cup (Gr 1, 2000m) but returns in Sunday’s Jockey Club Cup (Gr 2, 2000m). Shortly after his last Hong Kong performance, Romantic Warrior began his historic Middle East sortie with a resounding victory in the Jebel Hatta (Gr 1, 1800m) at Meydan. The Danny Shum-trained gelding was narrowly beaten a neck by feted four-year-old Forever Young (Real Steel) in an enthralling edition of the Saudi Cup (Gr 1, 1800m) in Riyadh, before a second agonising defeat as he went down by a nose to Soul Rush (Rulership) in the Dubai Turf (Gr 1, 1800m) at Meydan. Romantic Warrior was afforded a hero’s welcome upon returning to Hong Kong, but during the mandatory quarantine period that followed, he was discovered to have suffered a season-ending injury. It has been a long road back to the track for racing’s record earner but Shum said his charge is in good shape to defend his BOCHK Jockey Club Cup crown. “He’s good – he’s happy and healthy,” he said. “He has had three trials and one turf gallop at Sha Tin Racecourse. All the reports from the jockeys are positive.”

JPN: Lane set to reunite with Docklands in Championship Mile

Two of Australia's best jockeys, Mark Zahra and Damian Lane, will be in action in the Mile Championship (Gr 1, 1600m) in Japan on Sunday. Zahra will renew his association with the OTI Racing-owned and Harry Eustace-trained Docklands (Massaat), who is the only international runner in the feature event at Kyoto. Zahra guided Docklands to his greatest success in the Queen Anne Stakes (Gr 1, 1m) at Royal Ascot in June. Since then, the entire has had three more starts and wasn't beaten far when he finished fourth in the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes (Gr 1, 1m) at Ascot at his latest run in October. Managing owner Terry Henderson told Racing.com that Docklands worked well on Thursday morning in his final gallop prior to the race and that a trip to Hong Kong for next month's international meeting could be on the cards. Lane will partner Lebensstil (Real Steel) in the Mile Championship, who is the last-start winner of the Mainichi Okan (Gr 2, 1800m). "He's moving well and he's taking the bit very nicely, which is when he runs well," said trainer Hiroyasu Tanaka. "He is definitely showing improvement after his last start."

IRE: Goffs November Foal Sale concludes

Lot 768: Sands Of Mali ex Almarada filly (Credit: Sophie Webber Photography)

A significantly improved clearance rate told the tale of heightened demand at this year’s Goffs November Foal Sale. The four-day event witnessed 861 youngsters come under the hammer, and an enthusiastic and diverse buying bench saw to it that 707 of those found a new home. In turn, the clearance rate went from 77 per cent 12 months ago, when 672 lots sold, to 82 per cent this time around. Those 707 transactions yielded turnover of €34,160,500 (approx. AU$61,110,570), a five per cent year-on-year gain. The average price was almost identical at €48,320 (approx. AU$86,440), although the median dipped by seven points to €26,000 (approx. AU$46,510), down from €28,000 in 2024. The final day of trade on Thursday was topped by a Sands Of Mali (Panis) filly who was secured by Finn Kent for €100,000 (approx. AU$178,890).
