Little Luana Miss set to tackle the heavyweights

She may be the small filly taking on some seasoned sprinters, but local trainer Trevor Andrews insists Luana Miss (Bivouac) is well capable of punching above her light weight as he gets set to unleash his stable star on Saturday’s Winterbottom Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m).

The experienced Ascot horseman has celebrated eight Group 1 wins since taking out his training licence more than three decades ago, but the lightly framed Luana Miss has the potential to eclipse the likes of Modem (Bletchley Park) – who in 2004 achieved the Railway Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) and Kingston Town Classic (Gr 1, 1800m) double – if she can continue on her current trajectory.

What's On

Andrews is firm in his belief that his $110,000 purchase won’t be out of her depth or overawed by the occasion as she prepares to face off against the state’s premier sprinter Jokers Grin (Maschino) and a whole host of eastern raiders, headed by Bjorn Baker’s dual Winterbottom Stakes hero Overpass (Vancouver).

That dynamic duo are understandably vying for race favouritism, given that they have compiled 19 wins between them. However, off the back of two blistering victories this prep – most recently in the Placid Ark Stakes (Listed, 1200m) – and with just 51.5 kilograms on her slender back on Saturday, Luana Miss is certainly no forlorn hope as she bids to become the first filly to win the Winterbottom in half a century.

“She’s not an overly big filly, but she’s got a huge motor,” Andrews told ANZ News. “I have horses in the stable that are nearly twice as big as she is, but they’ve only got half her acceleration.

“She had her final piece of work on the turf track at Ascot on Tuesday morning, she came through that really well and was as bright as a button this morning so we couldn’t be happier with her build-up.

“It was a fairly easy decision to run her in the race, because she hasn’t given us any reason not to. Her last run was super when she managed to get herself out of trouble with an amazing turn of foot.

“She came through it really well, so I couldn’t find any negatives with her. It’s obviously a big ask but she couldn’t be in any better form, she’ll head for a spell whatever happens on Saturday so hopefully she can sign off with another big performance.”

Perhaps the only setback came on Tuesday morning, when Luana Miss was assigned the outside gate in an initial field of 11 which was subsequently reduced to just nine when both Man Crush (Manhattan Rain) and Spacewalk (Exosphere) were scratched on Wednesday.

But if anything Andrews viewed the withdrawal of Man Crush as more of a hindrance than the wide alley, given that it deprived the race of one of its early pacemakers.

His concern now is that Overpass may get an uncontested lead and prove too hard to chase down, as has been the case in the previous two editions of the $1.5 million contest.

However, provided Luana Miss is within striking distance of the leading pack he fully expects the filly to scorch home under Shaun O’Donnell, the in-form rider who was aboard Jokers Grin for his last-start victory in the Colonel Reeves Stakes (Gr 3, 1100m).

“I wasn’t bothered at all by the barrier draw to be honest, because I would’ve preferred the outside gate to the inside,” said Andrews, who also saddles up impressive last-start winner Ninetymilestraight (Flying Artie) in the Sir Ernest Lee-Steere Classic (Listed, 1400m) on Saturday.

“She tends to sit off the pace in her runs anyway, so if Shaun can sit three-deep with a bit of cover I’ll be happy with that. It was disappointing that some of the speed came out of the race when Man Crush was taken out, because that would have suited us and also put a bit of pressure on Overpass. But we can’t do anything about that and I’m sure there will be speed on as there always is in any Group 1 sprint race, so Overpass certainly won’t get things all his own way.

“Our filly has to carry seven kilos less than him, so even though he’s a very good horse with a great record over here, that obviously gives us a bit of an advantage. You don’t get too many opportunities to run an in-form filly in a Group 1 race, she’s earned her way in with some impressive performances so we’re more than happy to take our chance.

“If we could get a Group 1 placing on her CV that will make her a valuable filly, and with even luck I’m confident she can run in the top three. If she were to do that then we’d give serious thought to bringing her over to the east in the autumn, because there are plenty of suitable options for her and I do think she’ll be an even better horse next prep with a bit more maturity. But we’ll get through Saturday’s race before making any future plans.”

Andrews had enjoyed previous success with the family, having trained Gangbuster (Blackfriars) – whose dam Oopsy Doopsy (General Nediym) was a half-sister to Luana Miss’s mum Little Bit Ditsy (Bel Esprit) – to victory in the 2017 Lex Piper Stakes (Listed, 1600m).

He was therefore always going to pay close attention to Lot 102 at last year’s Magic Millions Perth Yearling Sale, and his admiration for Darley’s emerging stallion made him doubly determined to leave the complex with the one and only Bivouac (Exceed And Excel) yearling up for auction.

“I really like the Bivouacs, she was from his first crop so even though they’re going very well now they were a bit of an unknown at the time, but I was happy enough to take a bit of a chance on the filly because she was such a lovely type,” Andrews told ANZ News.

“She was beautifully balanced and athletic, which is what a good horse should look like. Sometimes you see big yearlings at the sales who look imposing, but ultimately you’re there to buy a racehorse so you need them to be able to run fast and she certainly looked like a fast horse to my eye.

“She also had a good temperament, although there’s not much middle ground with her – she’s either really switched off or really switched on. But overall she’s a pleasure to deal with, and she’s giving her group of 20 owners a lot of fun.”

The same owners also raced dual stakes winner All The King’s Men (King’s Troop) and last year’s WATC Derby (Gr 2, 2400m) hero A Lot Of Good Men (A Lot), who cost a combined $87,500 at the sales and earned just shy of $1.35 million on the track.

Andrews has therefore proved he has an eye for a shrewd purchase, and he hopes to unwrap another bargain buy soon having partnered up with prominent owner Peter Morley of Belhus Racing to pay $50,000 for a Bivouac colt at this year’s Magic Millions Perth Yearling Sale.

The colt, who has been named Plumm In Luck, certainly comes from a good family with his half-sister Lekvarte (Reliable Man) having claimed multiple stakes races for Joe Pride before she was acquired by Coolmore for $750,000 at this year’s Inglis Chairman’s Sale.

“He’s due to come back into the stables next week,” Andrews told ANZ News.

“He’s showing a bit of promise so hopefully we can get him to the races soon. We’ve only got 25 in work, so we tend to focus on quality over quantity.

“Workers’ compensation is a big issue here and outside the carnival we’re not racing for huge prize-money, so training horses for a living can be a very expensive exercise. But when you’ve got a horse like Luana Miss in the stables, it certainly gives you plenty of hope and makes it easier to get out of bed in the mornings.”

Within The Law shares top Magic Millions Digital Sale

A pair of shares in Bjorn Baker and Darby Racing’s star three-year-old filly Within The Law (Lucky Vega) topped the Magic Millions Digital Sale which concluded on Wednesday. A Group 2 winner and twice Group 1 placed, the daughter of Lucky Vega (Lope De Vega) is being aimed at Autumn Carnival features by Baker after a strong spring campaign. The two shares, at 6.5 and five per cent, were both snapped up by Highway Farm, for $85,000 and $80,000 respectively. Some 80 bids were received on the Within The Law shares proving just how popular and well regarded the triple stakes winner is. “We received strong interest for the shares in Within the Law from across Australia as well as multiple clients from China and the United States who actively bid which is extremely encouraging,” Magic Millions head of digital Bryce Bevan said. “There were other great results such as Gioia River [$30,000], Hot Affair [$18,000], as well as the Bennett Racing shares. Overall, we are very pleased with the results, we will work to get more over the line in the coming days and this sale adds to the momentum we are building moving forward. We already have a couple of significant entries confirmed for our next sale [December 5-12] that will be announced in the coming days, with online entries opening publicly for that sale tomorrow." Mott commits to Libertad’s Winterbottom bid

Annabel and Rob Archibald have taken heart from jockey Jamie Mott’s decision to forego a feature Melbourne meeting to partner Libertad (Russian Revolution) in Saturday’s Winterbottom Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) at Ascot. Mott has opted to bypass Zipping Classic Day at Caulfield, with its seven black-type races, in favour of making the cross-country trip, marking his fifth ride on the entire. The pair combined to win the Victory Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) at Eagle Farm in May. "Jamie Mott is going to fly over and ride him. He rode him a couple of starts ago, and he won the Victory Stakes on him," Annabel Archibald said. "It gives you a bit of confidence.” Libertad has been building solidly this campaign. He finished a close fourth to Rothfire first-up in the Sydney Stakes (1200m), then produced a midfield run in the Rising Fast Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m). His latest outing saw him finish less than two lengths behind Giga Kick (Scissor Kick) when fourth in the Champions Sprint (Gr 1, 1200m) during Cup week. Archibald said the horse had enjoyed ample time to settle into Perth after travelling earlier this month alongside Railway Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) runner Depth Of Character (Deep Field). He has also come up with a favourable draw, landing barrier two, directly inside two-time Winterbottom winner and equal favourite Overpass (Vancouver). A multiple Group winner, Libertad already boasts victories in the Kindergarten Stakes (Gr 3, 1100m), San Domenico Stakes (Gr 3, 1100m) and the Victory Stakes, and Archibald hopes Saturday’s assignment is the one that adds a major. "He ran fourth in the Champions Sprint the other day. He has won two Group 3s and a Group 2 during his career. We're missing a Group 1 so this might be it," she said.

Winterbottom always the plan with Rey Magnerio

Cranbourne-based trainer Robbie Griffiths has revealed that Saturday's Winterbottom Stakes has always been the plan with Rey Magnerio (Magnus). The six-year-old gelding landed the Caulfield Sprint (Gr 2, 1000m) on his seasonal debut, before a last-start third in the Century Stakes (Listed, 1000m) at Flemington in the lead-up to this weekend's Group 1. “We were always keen to do this, third-up, hence the reason we had only the two 1000-metre races,” Griffiths told The Verdict podcast. “He hasn’t been overtaxed, knowing that he had to travel away for the first time. We are really pleased with how it’s all turned out. He has been there ten days and hasn’t missed a beat. He’s been super.” Griffiths had the option of sending Rey Magnerio to Perth last year, however he opted to go for The Meteorite (1200m) at Cranbourne on a tighter track – in which he finished second. “It was always the plan to go here, subject to flights and how things panned out,” he said. “We thought this track would suit him a lot better.” Griffiths has acquired the services of William Pike for the ride. “Every Saturday you watch the races there and there he is, crossing the line in front,” Griffiths said. “We were absolutely stoked when he accepted the ride on Rey, and hopefully that can continue.”

Price hopeful rain arrives for Hezashocka’s Zipping Classic bid

The Mick Price and Michael Kent Jnr stable will be keeping a close eye on the skies ahead of Saturday’s Zipping Classic (Gr 2, 2400m) at Caulfield, with rain arriving at acceptance time providing a welcome boost for the camp’s feature runner Hezashocka (Shocking). The stayer has a clear preference for soft ground, a point not lost on Price as he assessed conditions on Wednesday. "He hasn't won for a while and he's had something like 20 starts on good ground, for no result," Price said. "He needs to get his toe in. It's a $750,000 race and he did run in a $1 million race three starts ago, so I'll probably send him around because he's in good order." The track was rated in the good range when acceptances were declared on Wednesday morning, just as a heavy rain band swept across Melbourne. More showers are forecast through the week, but whether they meaningfully soften the Caulfield surface remains unclear. Should he perform well on Saturday, the Pakenham Cup (Listed, 2500m) on December 13 may come into play, with Price noting recent favourable track conditions. "It has been a wet track and racing like a heavy track, so that would suit him," Price said. "But by the time he gets to it, it might firm up a bit."

Kennewell to unveil two in Merson Cooper

Lloyd Kennewell will hand debuts to a pair of juveniles in Saturday's Merson Cooper Stakes (Listed, 1000m) and has hopes that both could be potential Magic Millions 2YO Classic (RL, 1200m) contenders. "I've always got the Gold Coast in the back of my mind," Kennewell told Racing.com. "We've had a lot of success up there over the years, albeit with the two-year olds, I think it's hard for the southerners to get up there and win that race. I've had runners in it in the last two years in both races and unfortunately failed in the big one but if we can get another one there, I'm happy to go back up there for sure." Eternal Warrior (Extreme Warrior) has taken in a jumpout at Cranbourne before running second behind Alibaba (Alabama Express) in an official barrier trial at Caulfield Heath. "He's in good order, he trialled really well," Kennewell said. "He was probably a little slow out compared to what I thought he would be, so I think you'll see on Saturday, if he can draw a barrier, he'll probably land a little bit closer. I thought his trial was good." Kennewell's other representative will be Forbidden Desire (Tassort), who ran fourth in the same barrier trial at Caulfield Heath on November 20. "She always looked a sharp, energetic filly at the sales and that's how she is," Kennewell said. "She flew the lids at the trials, led very comfortably and she's got brilliant gate speed, which is obviously one thing that you want for two-year olds. Luke Cartwright rode her and he'll retain the ride as well. We just wanted him to look after her and he probably shut her down a little bit too much late, I just would have liked to have seen her run through the line, but after the line she was still good and Luke was adamant she was good."

Vestas to wear blinkers at Caulfield

Dual Group 3 placegetter Vestas (Toronado) will have the addition of blinkers on Saturday when she contests the Doveton Stakes (Listed, 1100m) at Caulfield. The four-year-old's trainer Clinton McDonald is hoping the gear change can see the daughter of Toronado (High Chaparral) get back into the winner's enclosure, with her only success from eight starts to date coming on debut in a 1000-metre contest at Cranbourne. "The other day I didn't think she tried one yard," McDonald told Racing.com of the mare's last-start eighth in the How Now Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m). "She was disappointing and we've got to try something different with her. She's a temperamental mare, and a bit like Cinderella, she needs everything perfect and being a racehorse, you don't always get that. She's got to build our trust back, but her work on Tuesday morning was solid, and the proof will be in the pudding on race day. She's going to lose a lot more than she wins because of her racing pattern and that's because of the way you've got to ride her. She doesn't like being inside horses. She's not a stable favourite at the moment, I can assure you, but all we can do is try new things. We can't fault her condition, her action is good and she's eating well. She's a very good mare on her day. She's got a great turn of foot and she's a black-type mare. We've got to remember too that she's very lightly raced. She's a four-year-old mare who’s had eight starts, she's still got to learn how to race and maybe it's now time to put the blinkers and see if that makes a difference for her."

Doveton Stakes return for Marble Nine

Having racked up four wins and a Group 3 placing in nine starts during his last preparation, the Leon and Troy Corstens-trained Marble Nine (Kobayashi) will make his seasonal debut in the Doveton Stakes this weekend. The five-year-old gelding was sent for a spell after finishing third in the Aurie's Star Handicap (Gr 3, 1200m) at Flemington, a run that followed on from three straight wins – including in the Santa Ana Lane Sprint Series Final (Listed, 1200m). "We tipped him out and gave him a good break because he had been up for quite a long time," Troy Corstens told Racing.com. "I was very keen to avoid the spring, if we could and just pick up at the back end of it like we are at the moment and I want to leapfrog him right into the new year. I think he's come back really well. To be fair he's a five-year-old and he took a while to come to hand [earlier in his career]. I think he's really blossomed now and I think he's in for his best preparation. We're going to try to keep him in stakes races if we can. The guys who race him actually own the mum and we're going to try and make that pedigree as good as we can, so we'll be looking at stakes races. There's the Christmas Stakes, the Standish and then we'll see where we get to after that."

Snowden confident Xidaki has rediscovered his spark

Peter Snowden believes Xidaki (Zoustar) is back on track after a puzzling autumn–winter campaign left the trainer searching for answers. The gelding enjoyed a strong three-year-old season, claiming the Winx Guineas (Gr 3, 1600m) before placing in both the Silver Eagle (Gr 2, 1300m) and Festival Stakes (Gr 3, 1500m), and he was far from disgraced when midfield in The Ingham (Gr 1, 1600m). But his most recent preparation failed to resemble his usual standard. "Last prep wasn't him at all, so I only gave him a few runs and stopped," Snowden said. "I brought him back in, that was his first run the other day and that was much more like him." Xidaki resumed with an encouraging third on The Hunter undercard at Newcastle, tightening for room late and arguably unlucky not to finish closer. The four-year-old rises to 1500 metres for Saturday’s Festival Stakes at Rosehill, a race in which he finished runner-up last year, and Snowden expects him to show improvement from his low draw in barrier four. "His first-up run at Newcastle was great. He ran third and got blocked for a run with ten metres to go and he might have even run second," he said. "He hit the line very strongly over 1300 so the 1500 shouldn't be an issue. He's got a great barrier. No weight on his back. He's got a good rider (Rachel King). He will be competitive."

Kiwis seeking to recapture Jericho Cup

Shaune Ritchie and Colm Murray took out the 2023 edition of the Jericho Cup (4600m) at Warrnambool with Nassak Diamond (Roc De Cambes), and on Sunday they will be seeking to usurp their former runner in the marathon feature with Tempest Moon (Turn Me Loose). Ritchie is in Australia with the daughter of Turn Me Loose (Iffraaj), who like Nassak Diamond, carries the familiar silks of owner The Oaks Stud. The Cambridge trainer is excited to be back in Warrnambool and said the city gets in behind the race that honours past servicemen. “It’s a fantastic week here,” Ritchie said. “They have the light infantry go through town and when Nassak Diamond won, Colm, Rick [Williams, The Oaks Stud general manager] and I all got a kick out of it because they play the last post, there are 8,000 people on course and nobody says a word, it is eerie. They really show a lot of respect to their returned serviceman, as do we. It is a unique race being three miles and when Nassak Diamond won it two years ago I wasn’t sure if there was another lap to go or not. It is nice to come over here with a New Zealand-trained horse again and have another go.” The five-year-old mare has won just one of her 13 starts to date, but Ritchie believes she will lap up the marathon distance and has taken heart from her last two runs, where she was fourth at Taupo over 2600 metres before finishing runner-up to I’m A Dirty Rascal (Galileo) in the Road To The Jericho (3000m) at Riccarton. “She profiles as the right style of horse, she wanted to go another lap again after the winning post at Riccarton and at Taupo in her last couple of starts,” Ritchie said.

Pike picks Northerly ride

Western Australia's champion jockey William Pike has been picked to ride unbeaten three-year-old King Of Light (Earthlight) in the Northerly Stakes (Gr 1, 1800m) at Ascot on Saturday week. Pike had the choice between the Dan Morton-trained gelding - who he has ridden to all five wins - and last Saturday's Railway Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) scorer Watch Me Rock (Awesome Rock), and admitted the fact that the former will carry just 52.5 kilograms in the Northerly was a big factor. "This really was one of the hardest decisions of my career, but I have gone with the three-year-old King Of Light," Pike told Racing.com. "I just can't dismiss the weight factor and the three-year-old record in this race. My past successes have been on the three-year-olds, so I suppose I'm somewhat sticking with what works. I've chased every form analyst around, trying to split them; everyone was heavily in the favour of King Of Light, but I really think they're underselling Watch Me Rock. It was not an easy decision at all. I won't be surprised if it's the wrong one, nor will I be surprised if it's the right one." Pike has won the Northerly on two occasions, both with three-year-old fillies owned by Bob Peters, scoring aboard Perfect Reflection (More Than Ready) in 2015 and Arcadia Queen (Pierro) in 2018.

Kennedy-McDonald set to join father on licence

Ali Kennedy-McDonald is set to follow in the footsteps of father Clinton and her late grandfather Ross by becoming a racehorse trainer. Currently an assistant trainer at Clinton McDonald Racing, Kennedy-McDonald is in the process of applying for her trainer licence to then form a partnership with her father. "Hopefully, it's sooner rather than later. I just have some bookwork to get through," Kennedy-McDonald told SEN. "At the end of the day, it's a bit tough after you're working long hours at the stables. As soon as we get that ticked off, we will be ready to go. I started working for my dad 11 years ago. I went to Arrowfield and did a yearling prep, I went to Marcus Oldham and did their Equine Business Management course and worked for the MRC for a bit. So, I've done a bit of everything in the industry, but I've always come back to the stable because that's where I love to be. I love the horses, the lifestyle, everything about it … it's completely different to anything else." Kennedy-McDonald is currently in charge of her father's stable, with Clinton having recently suffered a fall down a set of stairs on Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) eve. "He went to Caulfield yesterday to watch some gallops and I think he may have overdone it a bit, in true Clinton fashion," Kennedy-McDonald said. "He's coming along well; he'll be alright soon enough. He was in a pretty bad way. He ended up in the ICU and then spent a few days in the Trauma Unit, so it was pretty bad."

Vale Autumn Angel

Australian Oaks (Gr 1, 2400m) winner Autumn Angel (The Autumn Sun) has died. A multiple stakes winner for trainers Peter Moody and Katherine Coleman, the five-year-old mare had sold to Yulong's Walnut Farm for $1.225 million in a boutique Inglis Digital Online Sale when offered by Dalziel Bloodstock after having suffered a career-ending tendon injury. Making just 11 starts on the track, the daughter of The Autumn Sun (Redoute’s Choice) won more than $1.18 million in prize-money with victories in the 2024 Australian Oaks, 2024 Kewney Stakes (Gr 2, 1600m) and 2023 Ethereal Stakes (Gr 3, 2000m). Originally purchased by Wylie Dalziel and Peter Moody for $230,000 at the 2022 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale when offered by Arrowfield Stud, she was out of the Group 3-winning Hussonet (Mr. Prospector) mare Angel Of Mercy.

Vale Levendi

Magnum Park stallion Levendi (Pierro) has died at the age of 11 after a bout of colic. The son of Pierro’s (Lonhro) former trainer Peter Gelagotis announced the news in a Facebook post on Wednesday. Purchased by Manny Gelagotis and James Bester for $140,000 at the 2016 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale, Levendi landed the Australian Derby (Gr 1, 2400m) in 2018 while also winning the Tulloch Stakes (Gr 2, 2000m) the same year and Carbine Club Stakes (Gr 3, 1600m) the year prior. "He was ranked in the world ratings in the top 20 in the world post his AJC Derby victory 2018 & was Australian Champion middle distance galloper after being only one of 9 horses in the history to win the Tulloch Stakes/AJC Derby Double & ran the fastest time in the past 25 years in the race of 2.28.73 defeating Ace High in a mighty battle down the Randwick straight," Gelagotis said in the post. "He was retired to stud at Magnum Park in Tasmania where he has sired winners however after Colic complications recently he hasn’t made it through which has hit everyone very hard. He was a champion and took the stable around the globe and had a world class ranking that gives his ownership group and the stable great pride. Horses like this are a miracle to find and we are all very blessed to have had a horse like Levendi in our lives. To all the people that played a role in his racing and breeding career in particular his ownership group , staff , riders & strappers we thank you for loving and caring for him throughout his life including the vets recently in Tasmania whom we know tried their hardest to help the horse survive. The highlight reels and memories are unforgettable and May his beautiful soul rest in peace - thanks for the memories LEVENDI. RIP CHAMPION."

King’s English bolts in for Te Akau

King's English (Credit: Race Images)

Regally bred colt King’s English (Snitzel) delivered on his early promise with a dominant maiden victory at Te Aroha on Tuesday, powering clear to score by 5.8 lengths in the Diprose Miller Maiden (1150m). Given 47 days between runs after finishing third in his first two appearances at Taupo, the three-year-old rewarded the patient approach of trainers Mark Walker and Sam Bergerson, who rated him a strong winning chance. Ridden by Craig Grylls, King’s English travelled outside the leader I’ll Be Home Soon (Charm Spirit) before putting the race away inside the 300 metres. “He was impressive,” Grylls said. “Sam [Bergerson] said to me beforehand, just put him in the race and he got away from the barriers really well and I was able to put him outside the leader. It was pretty easy. He travelled nicely and had a really good kick on him today. He definitely franked the form of his first two efforts and you’d think he’d be one that could go on with it, too. He’s a really well-bred colt, just a good mover and a nice horse in general.” Walker was thrilled to see the son of Snitzel (Redoute’s Choice) take the next step. “It was a really good win and good, positive, ride by Craig Grylls,” he said. “He’d been building nicely to the win and his dam, English, just continued to get better as a four and five-year-old, so we expect him to keep improving too. The boys at the Colt Barn have done a really good job with him and he’ll gain a lot of confidence from the win. He’s certainly not a kid’s pony to handle, by any means, and has shown really good galloping ability the way that he’s been able to break through and win by a big margin.”

La Crique primed to end Group 1 bridesmaid streak at Trentham

Twelve months on from the first of a remarkable run of Group 1 seconds, Te Awamutu mare La Crique (Vadamos) is poised to break the sequence in next week’s TAB Mufhasa Classic (Gr 1, 1600m) at Trentham. Her narrow defeat in last year’s edition marked the beginning of an almost surreal streak: five consecutive Group 1 runner-up finishes since last December. The latest came in September when she finished half a length behind Waitak in the Howden Insurance Mile (Gr 1, 1600m) at Te Rapa. Given time to freshen, the seven-year-old showcased her readiness with a sharp solo gallop between races at Te Aroha on Wednesday, clocking 1000m in 1:00.91 and a final 600m in 35.14. Earlier on the card, top mare Legarto ran 1:03.44 for 1100m, home in 32.55. “That was just right, not too much pressure and it should bring her on nicely,” Katrina Alexander, who trains in partnership with husband Simon, said. “The time she’s had to herself was good for her, she’s carrying good condition and I would go so far as to say that she’s finally matured.” Despite her string of seconds, which also includes Group 1 placings in the 2022 New Zealand Derby (2400m) and 2023 Otaki Maori WFA Classic (1600m), La Crique has compiled an imposing record of nine wins from 23 starts, highlighted by victories in the 2022 Arrowfield Stud Plate (Gr 1, 1600m) and this year’s Otaki Maori WFA Classic (1600m). Her earnings exceed $2 million. Masa Hashizume partnered her in Wednesday’s workout and will take the raceday ride for the first time at Trentham. “Masa has been coming down regularly to ride trackwork for us, which is something we really appreciate,” Alexander said. “He’s been very obliging and we’re pleased to see how well he’s getting on with the mare, so we’re looking forward to getting them together on raceday.”

Kelsos’ millionaire mares on track for further riches

Ken and Bev Kelsos’ millionaire duo of Legarto (Proisir) and Alabama Lass (Alabama Express) are well on target for further major assignments as the feature summer racing period looms. An easy trial win at Te Aroha on Wednesday has confirmed that Legarto is ready to resume her career in the Mufhasa Classic (Gr 1, 1600m) at Trentham on Saturday week. In Wednesday’s 1100-metre black-type trial ahead of the Te Aroha race meeting, Legarto set a leisurely pace from fellow Group 1 winner Captured By Love (Written Tycoon) and was under no pressure from rider Vinnie Colgan to score by 3.5 lengths. “That was good to see, more like her old self, and she was in no hurry to pull up,” Ken Kelso said. “She had a hood on for the first time today and I’m pretty sure it will stay on when she races. We have the option of the TAB Mile at Trentham or the Cal Isuzu a week later at Te Rapa, but at this stage she’ll be heading to Trentham. The obvious attraction is it’s a Group 1 and the trip away on top will be a better platform ahead of the Zabeel Classic, which is her Christmas target.” The Kelso stable’s other millionaire earner, Alabama Lass, has also received the green light for summer features after making good progress since her return from a two-race Melbourne spring campaign. Having won at Flemington on a hit-and-run mission in her final three-year-old appearance last autumn, Alabama Lass returned to Melbourne in September for a second in the Moir Stakes (Gr 1, 1000m), followed by a sub-par performance in the Manikato Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m). “That really had us scratching our heads, so once we got her home and back in work we decided to run a battery of tests to see if we could identify any sort of a problem,” Kelso said. “The vet report has come back all clear, her scopes and everything are good, so we can start making plans. It looks as though she’ll go into the Railway first-up, so now it’s a matter of working back from the Karaka Millions meeting in late January, probably with trial earlier in the month and maybe an exhibition gallop somewhere.”

JPN: Triple Tiara heroine and top-level-winning broodmare Gentildonna dies

Japanese champion and top-level-producing broodmare Gentildonna (Deep Impact) has died at the age of 16. The daughter of Deep Impact (Sunday Silence) and Group 1 winner Donna Blini (Bertolini) landed the Oka Sho (Gr 1, 1600m) (Japanese 1,000 Guineas), Yushun Himba (Gr 1, 2400m) (Japanese Oaks), Shuka Sho (Gr 1, 2000m) and Japan Cup (Gr 1, 2400m) at three, the last-named victory coming when defeating Orfevre (Stay Gold) in a thrilling finish. Gentildonna became just the fourth filly to win the Triple Tiara (fillies' Triple Crown) in her three-year-old campaign and was crowned Japanese Horse of the Year in 2012 and 2014. The Northern Racing-bred champion went on to add a further three Group or Grade 1 wins, including a second Japan Cup when she became the first horse to win back-to-back runnings of the race. She also won the Dubai Sheema Classic (Gr 1, 2400m) and Arima Kinen (Gr 1, 2500m) the following year. Gentildonna was granted a place in the JRA Hall of Fame in 2016 and went on to have a successful career at stud, producing Queen Elizabeth II Cup (Gr 1, 2200m) and Sankei Sho All Comers (Gr 2, 2200m) winner Geraldina (Maurice). She was retired from broodmare duties in July.

315 for Dubawi

Zaydann (3 c ex Zaykava by Siyouni) became the 315th individual stakes winner for Darley’s breed-shaping stallion Dubawi (Dubai Millennium) when scoring in Wednesday’s Prix Lyphard (Listed, 1900m) at Deauville. Ridden by Mickael Barzalona for trainer Francis Graffard, the three-year-old colt made it a hat-trick of recent wins as he defeated Zoom (No Nay Never) by a neck. There was a further length and a half back to Vertbois (Night Of Thunder) in third. Bred and raced by The Aga Khan Studs, Zaydann is a half-brother to winner Zayida (Frankel) being out of the Listed-winning Siyouni (Pivotal) mare Zaykava. Dubawi will stand the 2026 northern hemisphere breeding season at Dalham Hall Stud for an unchanged fee of £350,000 (approx. AU$710,840).

Vincent Ho and Hugh Bowman claim final two places in International Jockeys’ Championship

Vincent Ho and Hugh Bowman have clinched the final two places in the International Jockeys’ Championship (IJC) on December 10, edging out Jerry Chau and Luke Ferraris, respectively, with crucial victories at Happy Valley on Wednesday night.

In a cliffhanger finish, Ho slotted a double at the final qualifying meeting ahead of the selection deadline to snare the homegrown rider’s berth with 13 wins to 11 over Chau, while Bowman claimed the final position on countback with 15 wins – the same as Ferraris – but prevailed with 21 second placings to his young rival’s eight.

Ho and Bowman join a star-studded 12-rider lineup headed by Zac Purton, Mickael Barzalona, James McDonald, Christophe Lemaire, Joao Moreira, Umberto Rispoli, Hollie Doyle, Rachel King, William Buick and Ryan Moore, whose participation hinges on medical clearance following recovery from a leg injury.

Seven IJC winners will feature in this season’s line-up – defending champion Barzalona, Ho (2023) Purton (2017, 2020 & 2021), Bowman (2016), Moreira (2012), Lemaire (2009 – tied with Moore and Johnny Murtagh) and Moore (2009 – tied with Lemaire and Johnny Murtagh & 2010).

Ho, who has fought doggedly to rebuild his career after suffering serious injuries in a fall at Sha Tin in February, was especially grateful after securing his place in the elite four-race series.

“It means a lot and each winner I’m really grateful for the horse, owner and trainer for the trust,” he said. “After seven months [sidelined] and the comeback, there are a lot of uncertainties.

“I want to thank all of the medical teams, my sports psychologist, the people in Switzerland who helped me and, of course, the [Hong Kong Jockey] Club for their support.

“I do feel extremely grateful for this and this is what I want to do, especially this year’s line-up is really great with great jockeys and a lot of friends. The winning year [in 2023] was great but this one to be racing together with this group of jockeys is really meaningful.

“I want to ride the best I can and repay the support the owners and trainers and the Club have given me.”

Ho won the final two races on the card to reclaim the lead from Chau, who had moved ahead of Ho on countback after Cody Mo’s Meowth (Showtime) returned to form in the Class 4 Clyde Arc Handicap (1200m).

Trailing Chau with fewer second placings, Ho returned fire aboard The Boom Box (Spirit Of Boom) with victory in the Class 3 Glen Ogle Viaduct Handicap (1650m), before sealing the issue on Francis Lui-trained King Miles (Exceed And Excel) in the Class 3 Culloden Bridge Handicap (1200m).

Bowman endured a rollercoaster evening, twice finishing second in desperately close finishes, before triumphing on Allcash (Kentuckian) for Danny Shum in the Class 4 Kylesku Bridge Handicap (1650m) to overtake Ferraris.

Allcash (Credit: HKJC)

After being denied by a nose aboard Flow Water Flow (Proisir) by the Caspar Fownes-trained Somelovefromabove (Lonhro) in the Class 4 Glenfinnan Viaduct Handicap (1200m) under Matthew Chadwick, Bowman suffered the same fate aboard Denfield (Deep Field) behind Me Tsui’s Everstar (Epaulette), who lunged in the last stride to land the Class 4 Brig O’Doon Handicap (1200m).

Needing to win on his final ride of the evening to pass, Bowman produced a brilliant ride on Allcash, a dual Group 2 winner in Brazil where he won ten races when known as Quisar.

“It’s always a privilege to ride in the IJC and I came here tonight with some strong chances and we had a really good night,” Bowman said. “I’m really pleased with that.

“Allcash was strong, he trialled well recently and his better form is on the all-weather track – we were aware of that – but he’s got points in hand and he show that tonight.”

The IJC is the most lucrative jockey challenge in the world for the winning rider, who receives HK$600,000 (approx. AU$118,420). Second place earns HK$250,000 (approx. AU$49,340), while third collects HK$150,000 (approx. AU$29,600).

Fresh from Jockey Club Cup (Gr 2, 2000m) success with Romantic Warrior (Acclamation) last Sunday, Shum and James McDonald combined with Legend Star (Deep Field) to land the Class 5 Forth Road Bridge Handicap (1200m), before Yiu Cheung Victory (Shooting To Win) – a six-time winner in Macau – clinched the Class 5 Queensferry Bridge Handicap (1650m) for Dennis Yip and Brenton Avdulla.

McDonald clocked his fifth win in two meetings when Ocean Impact (Embellish) surged strongly late to score for Douglas Whyte in the Class 4 St Andrew’s Challenge Quaich Handicap (1800m).

Hong Kong racing continues at Sha Tin on Sunday with the Chevalier Cup Race Day featuring the Class 2 Chevalier Cup Handicap (1600m).
