‘He’s got a big couple of years coming up’ – Newgate throw confidence behind Russian Revolution after Libertad’s Winterbottom win

Saturday’s victory by Libertad (Russian Revolution) in the Winterbottom Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) brought a long-awaited second elite-level success for his sire after what, compared to his explosive start to stud life, had been a couple of quiet seasons.

But Newgate Farm are confident Russian Revolution’s (Snitzel) first top-tier win since Communist’s Randwick Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) in March, 2023 will also prove a harbinger of much greater success to come for the stallion.

What's On

A breathtaking winner of two 1100-metre Group 1s in The Galaxy and Oakleigh Plate, Russian Revolution hit the breeding world with a bang.

The son of Snitzel (Redoute’s Choice) won the first season sires’ title in 2021-22 sitting atop in all categories: earnings, winners, wins and stakes victors, with filly Russian Conquest his top money maker. He also finished sixth on the two-year-old sires’ table.

Russian Revolution followed in 2022-23 by taking the second season sires’ title, romping home in all departments, with Communist his lead performer thanks to that Guineas success.

The stallion had 68 winners - 13 more than second-best; 109 wins, with second-best on 83; while his seven stakes winners was a whole five more than his nearest rival. He also ranked seventh among three-year-old sires.

Since then, however, the follow-up from Russian Revolution hasn’t been strong.

Whereas he finished a meritorious 27th on the general sires’ table in 2022-23 with just two crops running, he’s since come 24th and 23rd, and now sits 17th in the current term - and that comes only after Libertad’s $822,000 Winterbottom injection shot him up from 24th spot.

Russian Revolution is still holding his own by winners, sitting ninth in Australia on that score with 67, just four below fifth place.

Yet the 12-year-old’s stakes winners have been creeping up only slowly since that dynamic beginning. While he had seven in his second season, his overall tally two-and-a-half years on is only 13, and Libertad on Saturday became his first for the current term. He’s also still been short of that demand-boosting, headline act of an offspring - though hope abounds Libertad could provide him with a lot more press in the autumn.

Still, while there’s no disguising that the market has gone soft on Russian Revolution - his fee was halved to $33,000 (inc GST) this spring and even then his numbers have been down - under the laws of undulation in the fickle stallion market, Newgate has reason to hope for an upswing.

The farm has high expectations for the sire’s current crop of two-year-olds, bred after his service fee almost doubled to $71,500 following his debutant sires’ title.

His two juvenile runners so far this season include Peter Snowden’s exciting colt Seeiaye, who emulated Russian Conquest by winning Newcastle’s two-year-old feature the Max Lees Classic (900m) on debut.

Reports are also strong about Waterhouse-Bott filly Lumbini, who ran second in her first barrier trial on November 21, splitting Gimcrack Stakes (Gr 3, 1000m) first and third placegetters Shiki (Too Darn Hot) and Masvingo (Zoustar).

Furthermore, Russian Revolution’s current crop of yearlings comes off the back of his highest service fee. After his second season sires’ title, it shot up to $88,000, and the quality mares followed accordingly - just as predictably as the standard had declined after his first season at stud.

Newgate is confident the market will duly see many quality yearlings when the sales season begins in the new year.

A total of 26 Russian Revolutions are catalogued for the Magic Millions Gold Coast sale, out of mares including Group 1 winner and debutant dam Glint Of Hope (Deep Impact), quadruple Group winner Thump (Red Ransom), and Za Zi Ba (All Too Hard), dam of Group 3-winning juvenile King Of Pop (Farnan) and a half-sister to Group 1 victor Rediener (Redoute’s Choice).

The catalogue also includes a full-sister to Russian Revolution’s all-time second ranking performer - sitting between Communist and Libertad - in Revolutionary Miss, a six-time Group winner who was twice Group 1-placed.

Newgate is also excited about the follow-up batch, Russian Revolution’s current foals, conceived off a $66,000 fee.

As much as they’ll be bracing for a quiet crop from this season, the Hunter Valley farm is confident the quality of Russian Revolution’s current two-year-olds, yearlings and foals - coupled with results such as Libertad’s Winterbottom - will lead to a rise in the stallion’s fortunes.

“That was a great reward for Libertad, who’s just been so consistent from age two to five,” Newgate’s director of bloodstock Bruce Slade told ANZ News. “And it’s a great reward for Russian Revolution. Another Group 1 winner - that’s a huge feather in his cap.

“He’s one of the leading sires of winners in Australia, so it’s nice to see that converting to nice races.

“He’s got a big couple of years coming up. We feel his best two crops are his two-year-olds and his yearlings at the moment. The market can expect the best crop out of the best mares he’s covered at the yearling sales this year, and these two crops are going to be the basis of a big revival for Russian Revolution, we believe, in the next 24 months.

“I think the Winterbottom is a sign of more success to come. Plus, it’s just nice to see his stock training on, which they have been.”

Slade said Russian Revolution - who also had Brisbane and Adelaide city winners on Saturday in Gorbachev and Mintulee - had had to endure “that yo-yo effect stallions get into”.

“They cover that really strong first book, then in years two, three and four the market wants to desert these horses a little bit. That goes for all stallions,” he said.

“Like any stallion, they get their best book in year one. Russian was a low risk, high profile horse and he was really well supported, and then the numbers and the quality of mares dropped away until he had that exceptional first season of runners.

“He’s a stallion who’s clearly impacted by mare quality. Send him a nice mare, and you’ll get a really nice result.

“That’s where our confidence comes from about his revival coming up, just with the quality of mare he’s covered for his current two-year-olds and yearlings.”

Slade said given the dip in Russian Revolution’s progress chart, coupled with the high quality mares he received at $88,000, buyers may be able to source bargains by the stallion next year.

“Right now, he’s probably the least commercial he has been. I think everyone would agree with that,” he said.

“He hasn’t had that fresh new horse to get the market excited. Recency bias does have an effect.

“But we’ve got him on the roster, we know the good stuff’s to come, and you’ll see that again with his two-year-olds this season, and his crop at the sales next year. That’s going to provide excellent value, given the quality of mares he got.

“He’s currently a top ten stallion by winners. Now, we’ve just got to get the quality mares coming back through. Based on his history, his stakes race performance will increase in the next few years as well.”

He’s got a big couple of years coming up. We feel his best two crops are his two-year-olds and his yearlings at the moment. While the drop to a $33,000 fee this year hasn’t worked wonders, a similar move with barnmate Capitalist (Written Tycoon) has had the desired effect.

Newgate dropped the Golden Slipper (Gr 1, 1200m) winner and dual Group 1 producer’s fee this year from $66,000 to $44,000 (inc GST) to, in managing director Henry Field’s words, “make him a no-brainer stallion for breeders in terms of value”.

Slade reported Capitalist has attracted a full book this spring, capped at 150 mares.

“That move has worked a treat,” he said. “Capitalist is going particularly well. He had a big day on Saturday again with winners everywhere.

“He’s really well placed in the market at that level. He’s a really good proven option. He gets a high percentage of metro class horses, and he gets a mare off to the right start, plus he’s got the Hong Kong market there too.”

Meanwhile, Libertad’s Winterbottom victory was an emotional one for his senior owners Trilogy Racing, being the first time their familiar colours had been carried to elite success since the entity’s founding in 2021.

“We’ve won plenty of Group 1s in partnerships, so we’ve seen what it takes. But this is humbling, though also validating about the concept of what we’re doing,” said Trilogy’s founder and senior owner Jason Stenning. “So it’s really exciting in a lot of ways.”

Stenning said the Group 1 breakthrough for the Annabel and Rob Archibald-trained five-year-old entire may have surprised some - given he was the third-longest priced runner of nine - but not his connections.

“This horse had a timeform rating of 110 at two years old. In our eyes he was always at that Group 1 level, but he’s always flown under the radar,” Stenning said.

“He was never in the media, he was never spruiked. He was usually at big odds, like when he won the Victory Stakes [at Eagle Farm in May] at $71, and again today in the Winterbottom at $21.

“And he was out for more than 40 weeks, from the back end of his three-year-old season. So he missed out on those Group 1 races that we believed he was going to be competitive in. But he’s come back, and he hasn’t had a soundness issue since.

“When he won the Victory stakes in May, that told us he was back and he was going to be competitive.

“Today, the ownership Group, Annabel and Rob and the team - everybody - we believed he could win it. No one else did, but when it’s your horse, you have that inside information, whereas from the outside, they’re not seeing that full picture.

“So yeah, we’re not shocked, but we are delighted.”

Stenning owns Trilogy with his wife Melanie and Sean and Kathy Dingwall. The four friends also own Victoria’s Blue Gum Farm stud, and Saturday’s crowning Group 1 success for Libertad came at an opportune time, given Blue Gum suffered the premature death of one of its three stallions - Inglis Classic graduate Sejardan (Sebring) - in early November.

“As everyone’s aware we had a huge loss in losing Sejardan only a few weeks ago, so we’re still coping and dealing with that,” Stenning said.

“One of the best rules is ‘No decisions on raceday’. But I think this win certainly qualifies Libertad to go to stud, but we’ll just let the dust settle, get together with Sean And Kathy, brainstorm it and see what we’re going to do next.”

Since the 2025 breeding season is all but finished, racing fans should be able to look forward to seeing Libertad resume from a spell in the autumn, where he’ll attempt to add to his five career wins and $1.7 million in prize-money. Races such as Randwick’s TJ Smith Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) - run at weight-for-age like the Winterbottom, would likely be among his targets.

Bred by the NSW Southern Highlands’ Rheinwood Pastoral along with Somerset Services, Libertad was first sold for $40,000 from Rheinwood’s draft at the 2022 Inglis Classic Yearling sale, purchased by renowned Victorian trader Tal Nolen.

The colt was then sold by Nolen later that year at the Inglis Ready To Race two-year-old sale, bought by trainer Annabel Neasham for $210,000.

Morning Briefing

Australia

First for Acrobat

Coolmore’s first-season stallion Acrobat (Fastnet Rock) registered his first winner on Sunday when short-priced favourite Acrodance (2 f ex Irresistible Miss by Choisir) scored stylishly over 1000 metres on debut at the Sunshine Coast. The fastest two-year-old to ever run 1000 metres at Randwick when taking out the Inglis Nursery (RL, 1000m) at his lone start, Acrobat has been strongly supported since retiring to stud, and the early faith looked well-placed as Acrodance swept home to win the maiden contest under Ryan Maloney. Trained by Paul Shailer, the filly was sent out a short-priced favourite off a dominant trial win and duly saluted by a widening 0.2 lengths over Maganista (Pierata). Bred by Nandowra Bloodstock Investment Trust and Costa Charalambous, Acrodance is the first foal out of Irresistible Miss (Choisir), herself a half-sister to stakes winner Pretty In Pink (Sebring) and the Group 2-placed Yoshinobu (Written Tycoon) from the family of Group 1 winners Fields Of Omagh (Rubiton) and The Mitigator (Master Of Design). The mare has returned to Acrobat in each of the past two seasons, producing a colt last year and a filly in August. Passed in shy of her $30,000 reserve at the Magic Millions National Yearling Sale when offered by Riverstone Lodge, Acrodance is raced by James Bester and Charas Bloodstock. Acrobat has covered more than 500 mares across his first three books at a fee of $13,750 (inc GST). He stands the 2025 season at $11,000 (inc GST).

Half-brother to Fireburn breaks maiden

Well-related Pierata (Pierro) colt Kilbrannan – a half-brother to Golden Slipper (Gr 1, 1200m) and ATC Sires’ Produce (Gr 1, 1400m) winner Fireburn (Rebel Dane) – shed his maiden at start five with a strong win over 1300 metres at Newcastle on Sunday. Trained by Gary Portelli for Laurel Oak Bloodstock and partners, the colt stepped out as one of the better-backed runners in a heavily reduced field of seven following multiple scratchings. Ridden quietly by Ashley Morgan, Kilbrannan let down like a colt with real upside in the straight, sweeping past his rivals to score by 1.2 lengths over Explicit (Snitzel), with The Confidante (So You Think) another 1.5 lengths back in third. A $460,000 Inglis Easter purchase from Goodwood Farm, Kilbrannan is the third winner from three to race out of So You Think (High Chaparral) mare Mull Over, also the dam of Group 2 winner Kintyre (Hallowed Crown). Since foaling Kilbrannan, Mull Over has missed to Rebel Dane (California Dane) before delivering a filly by that sire, and unfortunately slipped to Zoustar (Northern Meteor). Pierata is standing at Yulong for $55,000 (inc GST).

Farag lands back-to-back Jericho Cups

Farag (Credit: Racing Photos)

Aaron Purcell’s iron-willed stayer Farag (Sacred Falls) created Jericho Cup (4600m) history on Sunday, becoming just the second horse to win the marathon feature twice, and the first to do it in consecutive years. Ridden by Will Gordon, who himself notched a remarkable third Jericho Cup, the gelding was backed late from $3.50 into $2.70 and shouldered the crushing 70-kilogram topweight. He travelled sweetly behind the speed, conserving energy in a race run entirely on the course proper following safety concerns about the steeplechase section across Alfred and Tozers Road. Without the traditional change of direction, the tempo remained even and Farag peeled out before the turn and surged to the front, but unlike last year’s 20-length romp, challengers emerged. Ferago (Fiorente) swept from the clouds while Guido (Jakkalberry) kept grinding but Farag refused to wilt, lifting late to clinch the repeat triumph by 1.5 lengths. Gordon, in sparkling form this season, said the altered track configuration created uncertainty but paid full tribute to the winning stable. “It was a bit of a worry to be honest, I would have much rather been around the paddocks,” Gordon said. “All the credit’s got to go to Aaron and the team, they just primed him again perfectly. They know exactly what they’re doing, and he did the rest, he showed how dominant he was.” The decision to move the Cup came after a frightening incident in the Jericho Cup Consolation (3400m) won by Sabre Athena (Americain) when Matthew Mark (Fiorente) slipped on the right-hand turn out of the Tozers Road crossing. Jockey David Mulcahy was transported to hospital with a suspected concussion, while the horse escaped serious injury.

Waller and Kersley chase Northerly crown

Fred Kersley will get a rare chance to chase history in his own backyard when he partners Osipenko (Pierro) in Saturday’s Northerly Stakes (Gr 1, 1800m) at Ascot – a race renamed in honour of the champion trained by his grandfather, Fred Kersley Snr. Trainer Chris Waller confirmed Kersley’s booking on Sunday, replacing Tim Clark after Osipenko’s luckless seventh in the Railway Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m). “It was a good run in the Railway,” Waller told Racing.com. “He just got a wide draw, and he got caught wide, but he ran well. The 1800 metres will suit him better and weight-for-age will suit him better. Fred Kersley rides, which is great to have Fred aboard.” Osipenko arrives at the Northerly Stakes third-up after taking out the Little Dance (1600m) in Sydney and then closing off soundly in the Railway despite covering ground from a difficult gate. The WFA conditions and extra 200 metres are expected to be more favourable as the dual Group 1 placegetter attempts to recapture his peak form. Kersley heads into the mount in strong form, fresh off winning the AJ Scahill Stakes (Listed, 2100m) aboard Simply (Domesday). Osipenko opened at $21 in early Northerly markets, with unbeaten three-year-old King Of Light (Earthlight) installed as the $2.80 favourite fresh off his W.A. Guineas (Gr 2, 1600m) victory nine days ago.

Private Eye all set for The Supernova

Joe Pride has locked in a replacement rider for Private Eye (Al Maher) ahead of the $1 million The Supernova (1400m) at Pakenham, with Craig Williams to assume the reins from regular jockey Nash Rawiller for Pakenham Cup Day feature. Pride confirmed the switch on Saturday, with Rawiller remaining in Sydney to partner Gringotts (Per Incanto) in the $2 million The Ingham (1600m). “Nash is going to stay here [in Sydney] and ride Gringotts. Craig Williams is booked to ride,” Pride told Racing.com. Private Eye, racing in the Ladbrokes slot, is expected to start favourite after a superb Victorian spring that delivered victories in the PB Lawrence Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m) and Moonga Stakes (Gr 3, 1400m). The eight-year-old hasn’t raced since finishing fifth in the Russell Balding Stakes (1300m) and will be six weeks between runs. As per his usual routine, the gelding will have a quiet 800-metre tick-over trial at Kembla Grange on Tuesday. “We’ve done this with him so many times before,” Pride said. “He just has a nice day out at the trials, blows out a bit of nervous energy and it tops him off nicely. I couldn’t be happier with him…he’s a beautiful horse to work with, very compliant, he loves what he does, and they are the easy ones to train.” Private Eye will return to familiar surroundings when he travels south. “He’s won twice in Melbourne this year and he’s actually stayed at Pakenham both times. It is going to work out well for him,” Pride said. “You’d figure there’s going to be some competition there, but you’d be a brave man to say he won’t start favourite.”

Redemption shot for Bedggood in Ballarat Cup

Gavin Bedggood walked away from Caulfield a Group 3 winner on Saturday, but the Cranbourne trainer admitted the satisfaction was tinged with frustration after scratching stable star Kingswood (Roaring Lion) from the Eclipse Stakes (Gr 3, 1800m) earlier in the day. Casino Seventeen (Casino Prince) delivered Bedggood a $200,000 feature win but the trainer revealed he had been “sick all day” after withdrawing Kingswood on the belief the Soft 7 track would deteriorate – only for conditions to improve and the surface upgraded to Soft 6 after Race 1. “It was a Soft 7, they ran the first race and upgraded and we've had no rain,” Bedggood said. “If the owners were upset at me I wouldn't blame them either. It was going to be wet and it hasn't eventuated. That was my blue. I didn't want to give him a gut-buster with the idea of backing up next Saturday, so I thought we'd reserve him for that.” Kingswood, who was favourite for the Eclipse at the time of his scratching, will now head to Saturday’s $500,000 Ballarat Cup (Listed, 2000m), where he is set to line up alongside his stablemate. For Casino Seventeen, the Eclipse win marked his first success since joining Bedggood from Grant and Alana Williams in Perth. The durable eight-year-old produced his trademark inside run under Billy Egan to notch career win number 11. Remarkably, the gelding’s record now reads 55 starts for 11 wins, 11 seconds and 11 thirds. Both Casino Seventeen and Kingswood are expected to take their place in the Ballarat Cup as Bedggood chases consecutive feature-race weekends.

Oakleigh Plate in sight for Boston Rocks

Matthew Dale has circled the Oakleigh Plate (Gr 1, 1100m) after Boston Rocks (Hellbent) confirmed he belongs in elite sprinting company with another high-class Caulfield performance on Saturday. The Goulburn trainer watched remotely from Rosehill as his consistent gelding was edged out late by Aviatress (Smart Missile) in a blanket finish to the Doveton Stakes (Listed, 1100m) – a run Dale felt only strengthened the case for a Group 1 campaign. “I was rapt with his performance,” Dale told Racing.com. “He obviously was dominant last start on a good track and in Sydney he’s always been just a touch below on a wet track, so we went there guarded today, race nine on a wet track. He had to take the field up, he didn’t get any bunnies to chase, so his performance to have to go to the centre of the track and do it all himself and go down such a narrow margin but trying goes to show the sort of form he’s in. We might give him a little let-up now and we’ll most likely set him to be in the Oakleigh Plate either first-up or second-up.” The February 21 Oakleigh Plate, run over the same Caulfield 1100 metres, profiles ideally for the five-year-old. Crucially, Dale believes the handicap conditions could play in his favour. “He’s a perfect profile horse to land nicely down in the weights,” he said. “He handles Caulfield, handles a hot speed and over 1100 metres at Caulfield he deserves his crack at it. And today rubber stamped that for us.”

Headwall nearing return to track

Matthew Smith is already looking beyond the fading spring carnival, with stable star Headwall (Dream Ahead) set to ramp up his rehabilitation next month after the pastern injury that cruelled his entire campaign. The Warwick Farm trainer watched his $1 million Concorde Stakes (Gr 3, 1000m) winner soar into the spring with a first-up defeat of Lady Shenandoah (Snitzel), only to lose him immediately after – a blow Smith likened to an AFL club losing its marquee forward. "It's like when you've got 'Buddy' Franklin kicking goals and he does a knee, that's what it's like for us," Smith said. "You lose your best player on the team, your best earner, it's tricky. He is still spelling for another month then he'll come in and away we'll go.” Headwall’s absence ruled him out of the big-money eastern seaboard sprints, including the $20 million The Everest (Gr 1, 1200m) – a bitter pill given the six-year-old’s form spike earlier in the year, when he ran second in the Newmarket Handicap (Gr 1, 1200m), third in the T J Smith Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) and then runner-up again in the $5 million The Quokka (1200m). Smith is adamant there will be no shortcuts with the gelding’s comeback, but the depth of late-autumn options has him optimistic the stable’s ‘best player’ will still have time to make an impact. "It would probably be late autumn, he might head to The Quokka again," Smith said. "[We might] go back and try to get that on the board…but we will be happy just to get him back sound, get a couple of runs into him and see what happens. He's a gun if we can get him back."

Mahraba and Cilacap to jump out at Cranbourne

Fresh off a feature-race double at Caulfield, Grahame Begg is set to jump out last year’s Winterbottom Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) runner-up Maharba (Pride Of Dubai) and dual stakes winner Cilacap (Written Tycoon) over 800 metres at Cranbourne on Monday. “Both are jumping out tomorrow, so hopefully we don’t get any rain and they have them. They are both going well,” Begg told Racing.com. Cilacap hasn’t been sighted since the Easter Cup (Gr 3, 2000m) in April, where she chipped a knee that required surgery. Begg said the four-year-old, who claimed the Desirable Stakes (Listed, 1400m) and Alexandra Stakes (Gr 3, 1600m) during a sharp three-year-old campaign, has returned in excellent order. “She’s coming up really well,” he said. “We gave her a good break… the plan is to give her a couple of jumpouts and a trial… and then aim her up to Sydney for the autumn.” Meanwhile, Maharba is being readied for a summer sprint campaign after missing much of the year. “Maharba is coming along really well… he didn’t winter very well during his break, so we had to give him a bit longer… but he’s going to target races like possibly the Standish and the Australia Stakes later in January,” Begg said. The Standish Handicap (Gr 3, 1200m) at Flemington on January 10 is among the options for the four-year-old, who hasn’t raced since the William Reid Stakes (Gr 1, 1100m).

Zahra not changing tact despite title lead

Mark Zahra may be holding a commanding lead in the Melbourne jockeys’ premiership, but the star rider said it will have no influence whatsoever on how he structures his 2026 season. Zahra added another feature to his extraordinary spring tally with victory in the $400,000 Melbourne Classic (2000m) aboard Derby-bound three-year-old Different Gravy (Ghaiyyath) at Caulfield on Saturday, stretching his metropolitan total to 36 wins, well clear of sidelined Blake Shinn (23) and the chasing trio of Ethan Brown, Damian Lane and Craig Williams (all on 17). But the premiership, which Zahra has never chased with intent, will not keep him in the saddle through December. “I am not going to change anything,” Zahra told Racing.com. “Look, if I am far enough in front and I win it, then I win it. But, if I am going to ride in December now to try and win it, that will affect my autumn. I’m done after today. I am taking a month off. I am going to keep doing what I do best and have my breaks and then ride. If I can win it doing that, all good, and if I don’t, no problem.” While acknowledging the absence of Shinn adds intrigue to the standings, Zahra made it clear the title is not a priority. “It’s obviously nice to be in front and obviously Blake’s off the scene so there’s probably a chance, but it’s not something that I’ve got a lot of interest in.”

New Zealand

Second for Home Affairs

Coolmore stallion Home Affairs (I Am Invincible) chalked up his second individual winner on Sunday when Kinnaird (2 c ex Orinda by O’Reilly) scored on debut in a 1100-metre maiden at Otaki. Ridden by Craig Grylls for trainers Mark Walker and Sam Bergerson, the colt defeated Ka Ron (Hello Youmzain) narrowly by 0.1 lengths with a further length back to the third-placed Butler Cabin (Ardrossan). Bred by the Hong Kong Breeders Club Ltd, Kinnaird was purchased from the Highview draft at the 2025 New Zealand Bloodstock Yearling Sale by Te Akau’s David Ellis for NZ$340,000. He is a half-brother to ATC Derby (Gr 1, 2400m) winner Jon Snow (Iffraaj) and the Listed-winning, Group 3-placed Princess Rhaenys (Iffraaj) being out of the O’Reilly (Last Tycoon) mare Orinda, herself a half-sister to dual Group 3 winner Mr Ubiquitous (Tale Of The Cat). Home Affairs is standing for a fee of $82,500 (inc GST).

154 for Savabeel

Ammirati (left) (Credit: Race Images)

Waikato Stud stalwart Savabeel (Zabeel) was handed his 154th individual stakes winner on Sunday when the Stephen Marsh-trained Ammirati (3 c ex Happily by Pins) scored a narrow success in the Wellington Stakes (Gr 3, 1600m) at Otaki. Ridden by Matthew Cartwright, the three-year-old colt did well to hold on after favourite Road To Paris (Circus Maximus) veered dramatically before the finish when in front, dislodging rider Masa Hashizume and sending the eventual winner sideways. Tulsa King (Staphanos) finished strongly but was held by 0.1 lengths, with the same distance further back to Landman (Hello Youmzain) in third. “It’s a funny old game,” Marsh’s stable representative and bloodstock manager Dylan Johnson said. “It was a good performance from the horse. He was under a bit of pressure from the 600 metres, but he just kept finding and he was actually starting to pick the favourite up in that last little bit before everything happened. It’s an unusual way to win the race, but it’ll go in the book.” Offered by Waikato Stud, Ammirati was purchased for NZ$450,000 during Book 1 of the 2024 NZB Karaka Yearling Sale. He is out of the winning Pins (Snippets) mare Happily, who herself is a half-sister to the Marsh-trained Listed winner Exuberant (Savabeel). Savabeel is standing for a fee of NZ$100,000 (plus GST).

Azeezle all the way in Levin Stakes

Yulong has wasted little time in making a mark on New Zealand racing this spring, and those emerald green and white colours were carried to another feature-race win by Azeezle (Exceed And Excel) in Sunday’s Levin Stakes (1200m) at Otaki. The Australian import is one of a group of horses transferred into Ben and Ryan Foote’s Cambridge stable earlier this year. Azeezle made his New Zealand debut in Christchurch, running second to Platinum Attack (Santos) in the Pegasus Stakes (Listed, 1000m). That pair met again in the $80,000 Levin Stakes on Sunday, and this time the result was reversed, with Azeezle defeating his old rival by 0.2 lengths with a further half-length back to Dealt With (Ace High) in third. “The race panned out really well today,” Ryan Foote said. “Vinnie gave him a perfect ride. He was able to get a soft sectional and then kick away in the straight. These couple of runs have shown that he can be competitive in good sprint company. He was off the scene for a long time before that first-up run in the Pegasus, and we thought he’d taken plenty of natural improvement from that. It’s good to get a win on the board today, and a big thrill to get a winner in those Yulong colours.”

Peachy Keen lands Cromwell Cup

Peachy Keen (Reliable Man) capped a super-consistent spring campaign with a last-gasp victory in Sunday’s $50,000 Cromwell Cup (2030m). Trained in Timaru by Leonard and Lacy Stewart, Peachy Keen came into his five-year-old season with two wins and a placing to his name in an 18-start career. He had earned just over $33,000 and had a rating of 62. Now the Reliable Man (Dalakhani) gelding has had 25 starts for four wins, five seconds and $118,005 in prize-money. Peachy Keen began his season with three second placings – a 1400-metre Rating 75 at Oamaru, a 1580-metre Rating 65 at Riccarton, and a 2200-metre Rating 65 at Timaru. He won an 1800-metre Rating 75 at Riccarton with a stake of $40,000 on October 25, then returned to Christchurch for two appearances during the New Zealand Cup Carnival earlier this month – a second placing in a $65,000 Rating 75 over 2000 metres, beaten by a head by Sunset Boulevard (Eminent), and then a fourth in a 2600-metre Rating 82. That was the only time he has finished further back than second this season. Sunday brought a deserved return to the winner’s circle as he defeated Master Marko (Contributer) by 0.1 lengths under Gosen Jogoo. “He’s a gutsy little horse,” Leonard Stewart said. “When he’s in the finish, he really fights and gives his all. He’s had a very good spring, and we’re thrilled to get this win today for a fantastic syndicate of owners. Gos gave him a great ride. We’ll see where his rating is after this and talk through some future plans with the syndicate. Wherever we decide to go with him, we know that he’ll always fight and give us his best.”

JPN: Imperious Calandagan makes history in Japan Cup

Calandagan (Credit: Masakazu Takahashi)

European Horse of the Year Calandagan (4 g Gleneagles - Calayana by Sinndar) produced the perfect end to a remarkable season with a historic success in Sunday’s Japan Cup (Gr 1, 2400m), putting his head down on the line at the end of a furious duel with home favourite Masquerade Ball (Duramente).

Calandagan (IRE)

4yo: (27Jan21 b g)

Trainer: F-H Graffard

Owner: Aga Khan Studs SCEA

Sire: Gleneagles

Dam: Calayana

Dam's Sire: Sinndar

Breeder: Haras De Son Altesse L'Aga Khan Scea

Drama ensued from the start when Admire Terra (Rey De Oro) unseated Yuga Kawada and ran loose down the outside of the field, threatening to light up Calandagan for most of the back straight, but rider Mickael Barzalona fixed a target on the back of countryman Christophe Lemaire, then opted to go early when Masquerade Ball hit a flat spot.

Heavily backed in Japan’s market, Masquerade Ball came alive again in Lemaire’s hands inside the two-furlong pole and headed Calandagan, only for the sole international challenger to rally and win by a head while lowering Almond Eye’s (Lord Kanaloa) race-record time by 0.3 seconds. Dubai Sheema Classic (Gr 1, 1m 4f) winner Danon Decile (Epiphaneia) finished two and a half lengths further back in third place.

In becoming the first European winner of the race in 20 years, the son of Gleneagles (Galileo) vindicated the faith of his jockey Barzalona and the ambition of trainer Francis Graffard, as well as revealing the extent to which Princess Zahra Aga Khan had backed both in planning and executing such a bold campaign.

“He’s just a fantastic horse, but it was a hard thing to bring him to this race,” said Graffard.

“For him to break the race-record time is incredible, and the great thing is just the list of big races he’s won. It’s marvellous and it’s all down to a fantastic team at home and the support of the owner.

“I knew I was bringing the best horse in the world, but I was exposing him in a race that's almost impossible to win.

“I said to myself it wasn’t really fair on the horse to ask that of him, and I really felt that pressure today. We were asking him to do something quite incredible after he had already proved he was the best, so I felt an enormous weight.”

The highest rated horse in the world, Calandagan ends his season with four Group/Grade 1 victories, his Japanese triumph adding to other definitive wins in the Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud (Gr 1, 2400m), King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes (Gr 1, 1m 4f) and Champion Stakes (Gr 1, 1m 2f).

48 for Makfi

Haras de Bonneval sire Makfi (Dubawi) registered his 48th individual stakes winner on Sunday when A T Makfi (6 h ex Tenshinramman by Heart’s Cry) took out the Keihan Hai (Gr 3, 1200m) at Kyoto. Trained by Hidenori Take, the six-year-old entire defeated Lugal (Duramente) by a length, with another three-quarters of a length going back to Yoshino Easter (Rulership) in third. Bred by Okada Bokujo, A T Makfi is the third winner out of Heart’s Cry (Sunday Silence) mare Tenshinramman and sold for ¥16,500,000 at the 2020 Hokkaido Hiddaka BA July Yearling Selection Sale. On Sunday became the first stakes winner in six generations of his family.

16 for Victor Ludorum

Darley shuttler Victor Ludorum (Shamardal) chalked up his 16th individual winner on Saturday when Rozarion (2 c ex Roziyna by Sea The Stars) landed a two-year-old conditions race over 1400 metres at Limoges. The Mikel Delzangles-trained colt scored by five lengths over Fire Dragon (Zarak), with a distance back to the third-placed Kalli Malpic (First Eleven). Rozarion is the only foal to race from two out of the Sea The Stars (Cape Cross) mare Roziyna. Victor Ludorum is standing at Darley’s Kelvinside base for a fee of $11,000 (inc GST).

27 for Speightstown

In a big day at Del Mar for late WinStar Farm stallion Speightstown (Gone West), Salamis (3 c ex Antonoe by First Defence) became the sire’s 27th individual Grade 1 winner when taking out the Hollywood Derby (Gr 1, 9f) at Del Mar. Ridden by Umberto Rispoli for trainer Chad Brown, the three-year-old colt ran on well and led close to the line to beat Tom’s Magic (Justify) by a neck. Test Score (Lookin At Lucky) finished the same distance further back in third place. Bred and raced by Juddmonte, Salamis is a half-brother to Grade 2 winner Segesta (Ghostzapper) being out of the Grade 1-winning mare Antonoe (First Defence). Speightstown died last year.

150 for Speightstown

Before siring his 27th individual top-flight winner later on Saturday’s Del Mar card, WinStar’s late stallion Speightstown brought up his 150th individual stakes winner when the Michael McCarthy-trained Call Sign Seven (4 c ex Awesome Marchesa by Awesome Again) landed the Seabiscuit Handicap (Gr 2, 8.5f). Ridden by Ricardo Gonzalez, the four-year-old colt defeated Astronomer (Air Force Blue) by a half-length with a further head back to El Potente (Temple City) in third. Out of the winning Awesome Again (Deputy Minister) mare Awesome Marchesa, Call Sign Seven is a half-brother to three winners.

54 for Justify

Coolmore’s former shuttler Justify (Scat Daddy) sired his 54th individual stakes winner on Saturday when Just Aloof (2 f ex Aloof by Galileo) proved too strong for her ten rivals in the Jimmy Durante Stakes (Gr 3, 8f) at Del Mar. Ridden by Hector Berrios for trainer Chad Brown, the juvenile filly scored by two and a half lengths over Latte Luv (Constitution) with a further half-length back to both La Ville Lumiere (City Of Light) and Yours Sincerely (Cable Bay), who dead-heated for third. Out of the Group 3-winning Galileo (Sadler’s Wells) mare Aloof, Just Aloof is a half-sister to four winners. Justify will stand the 2026 northern hemisphere breeding season at Ashford Stud in Kentucky for a fee of US$200,000 (approx. AU$306,140).

50 for Gun Runner

Three Chimneys Farm stallion Gun Runner (Candy Ride) chalked up his half-century of individual stakes winners when Further Ado (2 c ex Sky Dreamer by Sky Mesa) landed the Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes (Gr 2, 8.5f) at Churchill Downs on Saturday. Ridden by Irad Ortiz Jr for trainer Brad Cox, the juvenile colt defeated Universe (Global Campaign) by a length and three-quarters. There was a further half-length back to Soldier N Diplomat (Army Mule) in third. Out of the Graded-placed mare Sky Dreamer (Sky Mesa), Further Ado is a half-brother to Grade 2 scorer Kimbear (Temple City). Gun Runner will stand the 2026 northern hemisphere breeding season for a fee of US$250,000 (approx. AU$382,670).

107 for Street Sense

Jonabell Farm stalwart Street Sense (Street Cry) sired his 107th individual stakes winner on Saturday when Bella Ballerina (2 f ex Pretty City Dancer by Tapit) made it two wins from as many starts in the Golden Rod Stakes (Gr 2, 8.5f) at Churchill Downs. Trained by Brendan Walsh and ridden by Tyler Gaffalione, the Godolphin homebred held on to defeat Atropa (Into Mischief) by a half-length, with Just Singing (Justify) the same distance further back in third. A sister to Kentucky Oaks (Gr 1, 9f) heroine and three-time Grade 1 scorer Pretty Mischievous, Bella Ballerina is the fourth foal out of Grade 1-winning Tapit (Pulpit) mare Pretty City Dancer, herself a half-sister to Grade 1 winner Lear’s Princess (Lear Fan) – that pair both out of the unraced mare Pretty City (Carson City). Street Sense will stand the 2026 northern hemisphere breeding season for US$40,000 (approx. AU$61,040).

UK: Havana Grey colt tops Saturday trade at Tatts December Foal Sale

Lot 1036: Havana Grey ex Thesme colt (Credit: Alisha Meeder)

A Havana Grey (Havana Gold) colt bred on the same cross as Group 1 star turned Arrowfield Stud shuttle sire Vandeek lit up the final session of the Tattersalls December Foal Sale on Saturday, selling for 170,000gns (approx. AU$361,010) to Hamish Macauley and Yeomanstown Stud – the highest price achieved on a Saturday since 2015 and the clear standout lot of Day 5. Offered as Lot 1036 by West Moor Stud for breeder Simon Chappell, the colt attracted a late surge of inspections before Macauley outlasted deep competition. "The best foal here today, he would have stood up well yesterday," Macauley said. "He has size and scope and will be re-offered next year. I think a lot of people appeared around the ring in the last 20 minutes before this guy went through! We had that sort of mark on him, and I think the market is unbelievably strong." Out of Listed performer Thesme (Exceed And Excel), the colt impressed all week according to consignor Kate Sigsworth. "He was bred on the same cross as Vandeek, and he has not put a foot wrong here all week," she said. "I'd like to give a shout out to the stallion owners, Ed Harper has been brilliant with Havana Grey – he made his name with ‘smaller’ breeders and he really does try and help British and smaller breeders." The strength at the top continued when Lot 1039, a colt by Cambridge Stud shuttler Chaldean (Frankel) out of the Listed-placed Yarrow (Sea The Stars) made 78,000gns (approx. AU$165,640) for Carrigeen North. The day’s third-highest price came from Lot 1002, a colt by Dragon Symbol (Cable Bay) brought 60,000gns (approx. AU$127,420).

Harry Bentley continues strong season aboard Hong Lok Golf

Returning to top form in emphatic fashion, Hong Lok Golf (Grunt) continued Harry Bentley’s bountiful string of lucrative wins this season with success in the HK$3.12 million (approx. AU$613,960) Class 2 Handicap (1600m) at Sha Tin on Sunday.

Hong Lok Golf enhanced an imposing record to seven wins from ten starts – all under Bentley – as Chris So’s consistent galloper took his earnings over HK$10 million (approx. AU$1.96 million) by defeating Soleil Fighter (Sea The Moon) and Steps Ahead (Written By) in 1m 34.02s.

Hong Lok Golf provided Bentley with his tenth victory this season – including five in Class 2 and the Premier Bowl Handicap (Gr 2, 1200m) on Tomodachi Kokoroe (Written Tycoon).

By Grunt (O’Reilly), the five-year-old was rated 96 before today’s triumph and will edge higher in the handicap after justifying Bentley’s pre-race confidence.

“His trial was really good the other day, so he was coming into this race with quite a bit of confidence. The race panned out from me from barrier one. The pace was good with a bit of an injection of speed around the bend, he travelled into it really well and he’s a game horse,” Bentley said. “Once the gap came, he picked up really well for me. Credit to the horse and the team as well.

“It’s been a good start to the season with some nice races and I hope to keep the ball rolling, but this horse has been a very good advocate for me. Hopefully we can get some more winners together.”

Eight-time Hong Kong champion jockey Zac Purton took riding honours aboard three talented gallopers – Majestic Valour (Toronado), who posted a clinical win in the Class 4 Handicap (1200m) for Pierre Ng, Ricky-Yiu trained Packing Glory (Harry Angel) in the Class 4 Handicap (1000m) and David Eustace’s Colourful King (Blue Point) in the Class 2 Handicap (1000m).

Zac Purton on Majestic Valour (Credit: HKJC)

“It was a really good effort [by Colourful King], it’s really hard to win from that side of the track,” Purton said, referring to barrier two up the straight course. “I thought there was no choice but to take him back and go across.

“The speed was always going to be there and it was just a matter of whether the race came and we had enough time to reel them in and he’s done it in really good fashion.”

Eustace notched a double with Dazzling Fit (Ribchester) in the Class 3 Handicap (1600m) under James McDonald. The Ribchester (Iffraaj) gelding dug deep as he tracked towards the Four-Year-Old Classic Series to deny Beauty Bolt (Night Of Thunder) by a short-head with the same margin to Withallmyfaith (Mongolian Khan).

Yiu, who sealed a brace in combination with Hollie Doyle and Victory Sky (U S Navy Flag) in the Class 3 Handicap (1200m, dirt), is confident Packing Glory can develop into a quality galloper: “The horse [Packing Glory] has got talent. He's a nice up-and-coming horse. He doesn't know what he's doing.

“Zac came back in and said it’s not easy to win first up with that draw [barrier two] and it obviously shows that he has some talent. If you want him to be one of the top horses over the spring, you’ve got to get 1200 [metres].”

Ng was similarly effusive about Toronado (High Chaparral) gelding Majestic Valour, who breezed to victory under a hold from Purton.

“He trialled really well. He trialled well in New Zealand, that’s why we got him, and we gave him four trials here and he did it easily,” Ng said. “He’s got the ability and good size, so hopefully he can improve.

“I told Zac just to be aware and to make sure that if he goes out, to go back in. He did it nicely today and hopefully he can do a lot more. We’re ticking along. We started off pretty slowly but it’s still early and we just have to time it right for the big races.”

Brent Crawford-trained Young Horizon (Star Witness) – owned by the HKJC Racing Club – finished powerfully under Karis Teetan to land the Class 5 Handicap (1400m) before Hong Kong International Sale graduate Day Day Victory (Deep Field) made it two wins in a row for Michael Chang after surging late to clinch the Class 4 Handicap (1200m, dirt) under Alexis Badel.

Audacious Pursuit (Ardrossan) broke through for his first victory in the Class 4 Handicap (1600m) for Caspar Fownes and Hugh Bowman in the equal closest finish of the day. Smart Fat Cat (Starspangledbanner) was second, beaten a short-head – with the same margin to Amazing Duck (Cluster) – before standby declared starter Matters Most (Advertise) gave Danny Shum and Ellis Wong a surprise win in the Class 3 Handicap (1200m).

Hong Kong racing continues at Happy Valley on Wednesday.
